From Publishers Weekly
Aimed at a popular audience but with an impressive contributors' list is Witches' Brew, edited by Yvonne Jocks. The volume boasts bewitching tales from the likes of Erica Jong, Louise Erdrich and Kathryn Ptacek, along with pieces from such unusual sources as Cotton Mather, Ben Franklin and theosophist H.P. Blavatsky. Readers should know that August Derleth wrote "Witches' Hollow" based on a note by H.P. Lovecraft, contrary to the editorial claim that Derleth completed an unfinished Lovecraft tale.

Broad Overview of Pop and Classic Witch Literature
By Stephanie Rose Bird
Witches' Brew is a dense literary anthology broken into three chapters. The first chapter Something Wicked This Way Comes: The Wicked Witch takes it name aptly from a line in a spell from Shakespeare's Macbeth. I was pleased to find this piece as the opening work in "Witches' Brew" but disappointed that this beautiful piece is abbreviated.
Something Wicked This Way Comes also contains W.B. Yeats, "The Sorcerer." Jocks identifies Yeats as a Ceremonial Magician in addition to the revered Irish poet and playwright that most know him to be. Yeats was a member of the Theosophical Society, Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. H.P. Blavatsky cofounder of this order, is included with a piece titled "Can the Double Murder" Cotton Mather, a staunch supporter of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials work provides an account that will chill the bones of most witches. Mather's short piece "Bridget Bishop" concerns a witch trial that depends on "spectral" evidence. On the lighter side, Benjamin Franklin's (yes, that Benjamin Franklin)short story is a tongue in cheek critique of the "scientific" approach used in witch trials. Franklin's contribution written in 1730 is a short essay called "A Witch Trial at Mount Holly." Oscar Wilde's mother, Lady Wilde's piece "The Horned Woman" is a legend about Irish witches. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of Sherlock Holmes fame, is included with a dark look at magic in "The Leather Funnel."
Next, we find That's Witch with a "W": Witchcraft as Em-Power-ment. This chapter presents the powerful, omnipotent, witch and crone archetype. Beginning with a short poem by Emily Bronte, that uses nature as a metaphor for the spell that love casts. "Snatcher" by Dean Koontz is a compelling piece that makes a delightful read aloud piece on a dark and stormy night. This is a classic crone revenge story that includes a repulsive villain and a hideous monster. Doreen Valiente, one of the founders of the neopaganism movement is appropriately included in the anthology twice. Her poem "The Witch's Ballad," provides an insiders experience of a Sabbat. Erica Jong's "Figure of the Witch" truly embodies the theme of this chapter.
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme: The Nature Witch is the last and my favorite chapter. Sandwiched between Doreen Valiente's basic course in witch craft "The Witches' Creed" poem and Erica Jong's potent warning against witch bias and anti-Semitism "Smoke," are wonderful pieces by the likes of Brothers Grimm and Emily Dickinson. A touching tale suitable to read to children "The Christmas Witch" by Rosemary Edgehill explains the significance of Yuletide. Evelyn Vaughn, (the pen name of the editor) contributes a lengthy story "Winter Solstice" that focuses on the semi-annual battle for dominance between the Oak King and Holly King.
It is pleasing that Native American voices are also included. Anita Endrezze's mythic tale, "The Humming of Stars and Bees and Waves," is an eerie Yaqui tale of a crone's epiphany after a retreat in a cave. Louise Erdrich, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, offers a haunting shape-shifter poem "The Strange People." If more diverse voices were included the anthology would be stronger still, afterall, witch and magic are global.
Yvonne Jocks' anthology provides a broad overview of popular and classic witch literature, crossing continents, cultures and approximately 400 years.

Freat romantic fantasy
By A Customer
Five centuries ago the witch Sydney Wyrdd and Scottish clan chief Duncan fell in love, but both know the helplessness of a relationship as he must care for his people above his own needs. She flees into the future for his sake. Sydney helps Tempest the Ancient One regain her lost love. Feeling more than just gratitude, Tempest wants the same for Sydney. Tempest returns Sydney back in time to her beloved.
However, though heartbroken and haunted by Sydney, who vanished thirteen years ago Duncan is expected to marry Eileen of clan Carron. That is until Duncan and Sydney see one another as his future bride arrives at his keep. They realize that they still love one another, but the problems that caused her to leave still remain and are compounded by the alliance the honorable Duncan has made through his upcoming marriage with clan Carron.
REMEMBER THE MAGIC is an entertaining romantic fantasy that stars Sydney, a secondary player in previous tales, one who Donna Fletcher's fans have waited for to get her own chance at love. The interesting story line hooks the audience as it seems impossible for the star-crossed duo to find happiness. The support cast, especially the magical beings (like Beatrice and Tempest) and Duncan's sister Gwen, augment the plot. Though Eileen pales compared to Sydney and Gwen, fans will appreciate Ms. Fletcher's magical charm.

Pure Magical Enchantment
By M. Rondeau
There are times when you can pick up a book and find yourself totally enchanted by the first couple of pages you read, but then it loses something. Let me say this then, that will not happen here as you continue find to your great delight that the enchantment doesn't end and this one will keep you glued throughout the book. With this wonderful story you will find yourself caught up and thoroughly enchanted not only by the magical prose of this author but the very essence of a love that defies time.
Sydney Wyrrd is a seven hundred old witch (who looks to be about 30 something). She fled the Scottish Highlands five hundred years ago, leaving behind her beloved Duncan whom she believed would be in danger if she stayed. Now two of her very good friends, powerful witches themselves, have offered her a chance to travel back through time to see if Duncan's love for her was everlasting. Though since leaving, she has lived five hundred years, she is returned to the Highlands to a time, thirteen years after she'd left.
Duncan, has come to the woods, every day for thirteen years, still dreaming of and remembering Sydney. He sees her, as he's seen her every day for the past thirteen years, yet does not believe she is real --- that she is only a vision, a remembrance of a love he cannot forget. As they both struggle to overcome the anger and distrust of what he felt was her betrayal of his love for her, the same warlock who engineered the deceptions that hastened her earlier departure would feel compelled to try to destroy them again.
All I can add to this is that I have never enjoyed a fantasy tale so much as I have this one. The sensual love scenes were amazing, the love story itself so very moving, and the secondary characters fascinating. Beatrice, Sydney's sidekick fairy, whose wings were off kilter and head wreath that would not stay in place was a total delight who always brought a smile to my face and the rest of the characters, I am sure had their own stories and I am on a quest to locate them. This is a book to cherish - pure magical enchantment and one that should not be missed.

The Magic of Remember the Magic is ExtremelyTame!
By Nancy Compton
The story is everything fluffy, warm, fuzzy and unexciting. If you are a devoted fan of Donna Fletcher, you'll probably love this book. Those of us who have never read her works and was anticipating dramatic escapades, it was surprisingly bland and continually flat. I noted the storyline was heavy into messages against prejudice and preaching how one should look at life. I didn't find the messages overwhelming to the point of reader overload; the book just wasn't what I was expecting from reading the back cover. To give Remember the Magic its due, it did keep my interest. It was a pleasant tale and I enjoyed it, but I doubt I will look for more books by this author as I like my books with a more rousing storyline.

It appears Remember The Magic is a somewhat sequel to Wedding Spell. Just because Remember The Magic wasn't for me, it doesn't mean it wasn't a good book and should pass up.

Book is very similar to the movie. It does reveal small details/scenes that weren't in the movie. If you like James Bond or Audio Books in general, I recommend this product to you.

Die Another Day Review
By Ripley Clone 8
Die Another Day was a great Bond novel. It fell exactly into place of the movie and the deleted scenes that are not shown in the film are no doubt explained in Benson's Die Another Day novel. The pages flew with colors and action. Great book and an awesome read for Brosnan's last outing as James Bond. We'll miss ya Pierce!

Extremely disappointing.
By AReader
After a long string of highly successful Bond novels, this is Benson's last one. Having just read it, I can see why.

In addition to Benson's masterful Bond novels, I have always enjoyed his novelizations of the movies, as they have given the character extra depth, and turned sometimes lightweight movie scenes into deeply absorbing writing. His Bond feels far more real than the movies, while retaining the excitement, action and fun.

Admittedly, he had a pretty dumb screenplay to work with here (invisible cars, anyone?), but he hasn't even tried to write a book. This feels more like a notebook of scene directions than a story, and simply tells you everything Bond does without adding anything, i.e. "Bond ran across the corridor. He kicked open the door. He ran down the stairs. He shot his gun"... there are paragraphs of this stuff. No attempt to make it into a novel.

I think he just put the movie on TV, scribbled down everything he saw onscreen, handed in this literal description, took his paycheck and ran.

A sad ending to a great career writing Bond novels. Don't bother with this one.

Amazon.com Review
"To see and taste and smell all this wonderful food was so heartening to me, I felt I had arrived in heaven," says James Haller in Vie de France. He's referring to the marketplace in the Loire Valley town of Savennieres, but his response encapsulates his "food encounter" during a month-long vacation he and friends took to the small community, where they rented a charming 17th-century house. The diarylike book details the trip and, in daily menus, the food Haller cooked--delightful country dishes like Sausage and Red Wine Ragout, Sorrel and Spinach Salad, and Green Plum Custard Tart. Though not presented in recipe form, the meals nonetheless receive sufficient description to whet appetites and encourage cooking.

An ex-chef/restaurateur, Haller, in his early 60s, was looking for the next thing to do, and the house and his diary-keeping provided a necessary break that eventually led to a full-time writing commitment, of which this book is a result. His journey from fearfulness about the outcome of a spur-of-the-moment plan to relaxation and revelation in the French countryside is gratifying. Readers follow the process, joining Haller and company as they discover town butchers where meat is cut to order, supermarkets with multiple cheese aisles, local chateaux, and more while experiencing some of the predictable crosscultural contretemps. Though narratively thin, and lacking the exploration of self and others necessary to paint a penetrating picture, the book manages nonetheless to convey the culinary life and spirit of flower-saturated Savennieres. --Arthur Boehm

A Master Chef's story of his celebration of life
By zzrose
I learned how to cook from Chef Haller back in the 1970s just after both of our businesses opened in Portsmouth, NH. Haller writes exactly the way he talks. Reading his stories about his time in France with his friends makes you feel like you are right there with him. Oh, sure, some have commented about how dry it is to read about every walk he takes and every carrot he peels. But I think those folks missed the point. As do those who thought it might be a cook book. It's a book about Chef Haller reflecting back on his life of creativity with a group of friends. It has no plot or any other point than his expression of his celebration of life. Thanks, Buddy. I'm glad that I got to see parts of that as both customer, friend, and inept student. And I hope your story inspires others to take time out to reflect back on their lives - regardless of their struggles - and to celebrate.

Food, wine and balance in life...
By BKK Blonde
This delightful book brings you to a place many of us want to be- in a lovely house nestled in a charming village, amongst good friends and family, sharing wonderful food and wine. In the US, food, wine and conversation are too often just brief pauses in the real business of life- work and getting ahead. James Haller's narrative reminds you the French have an alternative, a more balanced pace and focus where work is a necessary interlude between great meals and the cameraderie of friends. The experience in the Loire Valley rejuvenated a life-weary chef and the book reinvigorated me- it got me back in the kitchen to cook creatively for friends and reminded me that I had let work once again overshadow my real business of life.

uplifting biographical story
By A Customer
In 1996 having celebrated his sixtieth birthday in Maine, renowned chef James Haller, wary of the kitchen, decides to R & R in the French Loire Valley. He and friends rent a seventeenth century home in Savonnieres. Six people including James would stay the entire month that they have leased the property for while other friends will come by for shorter duration.

The house combined the best of history with much of modern day convenience. The company was companionable both those staying in the house and the locals whose fresh foods at the markets provided James an invigorating regeneration and though he planned not to cook one meal the motivated chef was soon doing all the cooking.

Though the recipes are what readers might expect from the author-chef, the key to this uplifting biographical month is how important friendship is to the human condition. France furbishes the atmosphere that rejuvenated a tired James. VIE DE FRANCE: SHARING FOOD, FRIENDSHIP, AND A KITCHEN IN THE LOIRE VALLEY is an inspirational toast to the stimulation of camaraderie that is a human need in order to live precious life to the fullest.

Amazon.com Review
What mystery fan hasn't heard by now that Robert B. Parker created his Sunny Randall series expressly for good friend Helen Hunt, with an eye toward the actress playing the petite blonde investigator on the silver screen? Although the series has been touted as a radical departure for Parker (a woman in the lead, by gum!), so strongly do Boston PI Sunny and her cohorts resemble Boston PI Spenser and his pals that the movie's casting director might prefer a blond-wigged Robert Urich. But Parker's quick quips, droll wit, and staccato dialogue are all on display in the latest Randall novel, Perish Twice, so in spite of the reworked characters, there's still plenty to enjoy.

When radical feminist Mary Lou Goddard hires Sunny to protect her from a stalker, Sunny accepts the case with some reluctance. After all, Goddard detests Rosie, Sunny's bull terrier, canine vacuum, and stakeout companion ("Rosie was in the passenger seat, staring out the side window, alert for the appearance of a strange dog at whom she could gargle ferociously."). It doesn't take Sunny long to track down and confront Lawrence Reeves, a particularly pestilential human being. But pestilence is no excuse for murder, so when Reeves and Gretchen Crane, one of Goddard's colleagues, are both found dead, Sunny dives into the murky waters of Boston's prostitution industry, where Reeves was a client and Gretchen was trying to unionize the workers. Politics and sexuality can be a nasty tangle, and the unraveling threads lead straight to mobster Tony Marcus's door. Tony may appreciate Sunny's sharp wit, but business is business: interference can--and does--lead to a bullet with her name on it. And as if all of this weren't enough, Sunny's sister and her best friend are in the throes of nasty divorces. Luckily, the leap from PI to marital counselor is well within Sunny's abilities.

While there's no doubt that rabid Parker fans will snap up anything the author turns out (and with reason), Perish Twice may be more appealing to new readers, for whom Sunny's charm will carry none of the uneasy echoes of private investigators past. --Kelly Flynn

From Publishers Weekly
Boston PI Sunny Randle, given her second outing here, is to Parker's veteran PI Spenser as Pepsi is to Coke: a bit lighter and sweeter, but still the real deal. And in the literary equivalent of a blind taste test, you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart; this second Sunny novel, even more than her first (Family Honor), is a Spenser book wearing a skirt. About now, the author's fans might be yearning for a change of pace of the sort Parker has offered in his stand-alones and his Jesse Stone series; still, what's here is quite good. The novel revolves around assorted couples' dysfunctional liaisons. In one significant subplot, Sunny's obnoxious and spoiled sister, Elizabeth, hires Sunny to trail her husband, whom she suspects of having an affair; when Sunny catches the lothario, Elizabeth leaves him and begins to sleep around. In another, Sunny's old therapist pal, Julie, is having troubles with her beloved and is also starting to date. And in the novel's main plotline, a lesbian activist who hires Sunny to protect her from a stalker also turns out to be stuck in a web of infidelityAand murder. Two killingsAa man Sunny pinpoints as the stalker, and a woman who works for the activistAeventually bring Sunny into the orbit of scary black gangster Tony Marcus, who runs prostitution in Boston. The scenes involving Sunny, Marcus and Marcus's underlings crackle with tension and sometimes violence; the rest of the novel presents a wholly absorbing puzzle of confused motives and whodunits that Sunny picks at as doggedly as any PI going. With its smooth blend of mystery, action and psychological probings, this is yet another first-rate, though not innovative, offering from a reliable old master. 15-city author tour. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Mary Lou Goddard is the CEO of Great Strides, a feminist organization dedicated to the advancement of women in all areas of life. She is being stalked; her office was vandalized and threatening messages left on her answering machine. She hires former cop and Boston private investigator Sunny Randall to track down her tormentor. It's not long before Sunny has confronted Lawrence B. Reeves. Soon thereafter, Reeves is found dead; the cops call it suicide, but Sunny says murder. When an employee of Goddard's is also killed, Sunny knows something is up. The case leads to Boston's prostitution industry, which brings Sunny to the attention of mobster Tony Marcus, a familiar bad guy from Parker's Spenser novels. Meanwhile, Sunny tries to guide her dysfunctional sister and her best friend, Julie--who has a master's in social work--through their divorces. The crime angle is vintage Parker: heart-racing action, stilleto-sharp dialogue, menacing tough guys, a very likable narrator/protagonist, and a moving romance. But Sunny as streetwise therapist, guiding her sister and best pal through the pitfalls of male-female relationships, quickly becomes tedious. There's plenty to enjoy here but plenty to skim past, too. Expect increased demand when the film version of Parker's previous Sunny Randall novel (Family Honor ), starring Helen Hunt, appears later this year. Wes Lukowsky

Sunny's second outing has a lot of echoes
By Patricia Beninato
Robert Parker's newest character, Boston P.I. Sunny Randall, returns in "Perish Twice," but this time she's juggling the role of relationship counselor along with her usual sleuthing duties. Her snooty sister learns of her husband's mistress and plunges into bouts of self-pity mixed with revenge; her best friend, bored with her marriage, has an affair, and a lesbian feminist becomes increasingly unhelpful when it's revealed that her stalker might know her more intimately than she's willing to admit. Through it all, Sunny struggles with her own relationship with her ex-husband Richie and comes closer to danger with each new twist of her case.
It's still too early to tell where Parker will take the character of Sunny. At this point, she still seems like the female equivalent of Parker's most famous character, Spenser, albeit a bit more ladylike. The book itself is fairly typical, uninspired Parker--the plot is reminiscent of an early Spenser novel, "Looking For Rachel Wallace." Sunny's relationship with Richie echoes a similar situation with Parker's other character Jesse Stone. Parker fans will experience a lot of deja vu with "Perish Twice," but it's still a fairly enjoyable read.

Variations on a Theme
By Charles R. Slater
No, the title I've chosen does not refer to Robert Parker creating a sort of female Spenser in Sunny Randall. Rather this, Sunny's second case, is itself more a series of studies of the varied and tortured physical relations women get into. There's the radical feminist who's a lesbian with a heterosexual itch to scratch; the former prostitute who drifted from respectable married life to lesbian promiscuity; the unhappy wife who deserts her husband and children to find herself; and the overly dependent wife who discovers her husband is cheating and strikes out on her own, a role for which she is singularly unqualified. Then there's Sunny herself, enjoying a perfectly good relationship with the man she's divorced. Somewhere along the way, three people get murdered because of the dirty little complications in the first two relationships above. That the last two confused women are Sunny's best friend and sister adds to the intrigue. But it also adds to the confusion as Sunny hops from emotional problem to emotional problem while trying to solve a well disguised mystery, knowing solving it could also be fatal. It works, well sort of, only because of Parker's genius with sparse prose and clipped, incisive dialogue. And because the heroine is so damn likeable. Still, it's not fully satisyfing and, as he did in Hugger Mugger, Mr. Parker's ending is also unsatisfyingly unresolved. Parhaps as he grows older, Mr. Parker is trying to tell us that the black and white of the young Spenser's world hardly exists. If that's the message, it doesn't quite work. Sort of like this novel.

Defining What It Means to Be a Healthy Woman Today
By Donald Mitchell
Perish Twice is the second in Robert Parker's new series about his female private detective, Ms. Sunny Randall. No one who reads the story will miss the similarities to Spenser. Through the parallels, you can begin to see more clearly Mr. Parker's thesis about what being a good, honest person should be about. What constitutes a proper life for women and men is remarkably similar. As in the Spenser books, most people don't get it. His interpretation of the proper feminist version of goodness and a healthy mind becomes more obvious in Perish Twice than in any other book by Mr. Parker. This transparency is helped by his setting up so many alternative models of women who are either phony, hypocritical, or miserable (or perhaps a little of each). As with the previous Sunny Randall book, Family Honor, this one makes Sunny a little too dependent on her hoodlum ex-in-laws to be totally palatable.
The story has four major plot lines. The primary one revolves around a bodyguard job that Sunny does for a high profile feminist, Ms. Mary Lou Goddard. Someone is threatening Ms. Goddard. Sunny soon spots a stalker and tracks him down. The path from there takes many twists. The second one involves Sunny's sister Elizabeth who wants to know if her husband is cheating on her. Sunny quickly finds out that he is, and Sunny plays chaperone and analyst for her emotionally floundering and confused sister. The third relates to her friend, Julie, who suddenly walks away from her marriage. The fourth continues Sunny's relationship with her ex-husband, Richie. Each plot line crosses the others from time to time, providing for a rewarding set of developments.
The mystery in the book has two very interesting features. First, it develops surprising depth after what appears to be a very simple beginning and initial plot. Second, Mr. Parker leaves the ending at a place where many stories don't end. As a result, you will have many thoughts about what the story means that you would not otherwise have. That's a fine bit of writing. So you have at least two nice surprises to look forward to enjoying.
After you finish this book, you should think about why connecting to other people is so difficult and painful. Another useful question might be why we don't draw more love and support from our connections to one another. What's missing?
Put honoring your values ahead of pursuing your needs, if you want to enjoy self-respect.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Coel surpasses her own high standard in her 10th whodunit (after 2003's Killing Raven) to feature Arapaho lawyer Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley. An exhibit of Edward S. Curtis's early 20th-century Plains Indians photographs has attracted a lot of visitors to the museum of St. Francis Mission on the Wind River Reservation. When someone shoots to death a descendant of a tribal chief shown in one of the Curtis pictures and the museum's new curator disappears, there could be a connection to a murder committed in 1907 on the rez. Meanwhile, Father John's assistant is preparing the mission for a visit from Wyoming senator Jaime Evans, who may soon be announcing his presidential candidacy and who proves to have a family link to the tell-tale Curtis photo. Handsome attorney Adam Lone Eagle steps from the shadows and resumes his pursuit of Vicky, who is still trying to come to terms with her fatal attraction to Father John. Stir in a crazed ex-CIA operative, and you have a hint of what awaits you in this action-filled page-turner. Coel draws readers into early Arapaho life as smoothly as she brings them into the sinister goings-on at present-day Wind River, masterfully blending authentic history with an ingenious plot.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–The killing in 1907 of a tribal leader's daughter serves as the background for murders that take place on the present-day Arapaho Reservation. The earlier crime, the recent murder of the wife of the tribal council leader, and the disappearance of the newly appointed curator of the tribal museum all draw a common link from a picture in the museum's exhibit of Edward S. Curtis's early-20th-century photographs of Plains Indians. In this 10th title to feature Father John O'Malley and Arapaho lawyer Vicky Holden, the two investigators work independently at first, but they eventually run into one another. While they are intent on finding the killer, their underlying unrequited love for one another intensifies the emotional atmosphere of the tale. In an action-driven ending, they pull together to solve all the parts of the plot's puzzle except their own troubled love. Idiosyncrasies, personal preferences, and physical attributes of characters seamlessly interweave people and plot in this stand-alone novel.–Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Booklist
The Wind River Reservation novels (this is the tenth) are one of the best Native American mystery series, a genre that boasts the thoughtful atmospherics of Tony Hillerman, David Thurlo and Aimee Thurlo, and Kirk Mitchell. Coel performs a very successful graft of history (based, as an author's note explains, on the photographs of American Indians taken by Edward S. Curtis from the 1890s through the 1920s) onto a contemporary murder. The quiet center of this absorbing mystery is series hero Father John O'Malley, a Verdi-loving Jesuit priest, still astounded by his relocation from the East to the reservation. The murder of the wife of a local power, T. J. Painted Horse, and the disappearance of the new curator of the museum housing the Curtis exhibit draw in both O'Malley and his longtime partner in crime solving, Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden. The plotting is sometimes a bit erratic, but the history-based crimes will hold readers. Connie Fletcher

Delightful, fast read!
By Stormy
Photographer Edward S.Curtis arrives at the White River Reservation hoping to capture the life of the Arapaho Indians before it disappears altogether. While creating this 1907 documentary, Bashful Woman, daughter of Chief Sharp Nose is murdered during the filming. Her husband, Carson Evans testifies that he saw the wariors,

Thunder and two of his friends aim and fire at Bashful Woman. With the weight of his report, the three Indians were tried, convicted and hung.

Fast forward to the present. Denise, an ancestor of Chief Sharp Nose and wife of Councilman T.J. Painted Horse is murdered. As the spouse of the victim, T.J. is the FBI's prime candidate until he is bludgened to death. On the same night, the curator of the Arapaho Museum turns up missing and her apartment ransacked and destroyed. Long time friend and lawyer, Vickie Holden is retained to insure that T.J. rights are not violated as the evidence mounts against him while Father O'Malley is trying to locate and protect the last remaining witness while preparing for the arrival of Wyoming Senator Evans, who is preparing to announce his party's presidential nomination. Senator Evans, a decendant of Carson Evans, will stop at nothing to erase the proof of what happened a century ago.

Through flash-backs and descriptions, Ms.Coel transports us back in time and to the present flawlessly while providing a look at the culture of the Arapaho never loosing site of both mysteries. There is even a some flying sparks as Vickie and Adam decide to open a law firm together and between Father O'Malley and Vickie, although neither one of them act upon it. Cleverly, Ms. Coel shows the humanistic, inner turmoil of Father O'Malley by allowing him to have feelings towards a beautiful woman.

Another Winning Entry by Coel
By Tina Myers
I've read several of Coel's Native American-themed mysteries featuring Arapahoe attorney Vicky Holden and Jesuit Priest John O'Malley. If you live in the West, or just like the West, these books are a must, as Coel, a Coloradoan by choice, does much to evoke the weather, colors and feel of the high plains. All of the mysteries are set in Wyoming's Wind River area, including the large Indian reservation there. In this outing, two mysteries, one present-day, and one set at the turn of the 20th century, come together, and before all is said and done, 6 Indians are murdered, three in the name of a twisted and prejudicial justice. Old photos that have recently come to light may hold the images of Bashful Woman's true murderer's identity. Unfortunately whomever owns those glass plate images today is in danger of also being killed, hired by a mercenary of one of Wyoming's most influential ranchers/politicians, who also happens to be running for president. Despite much bloodshed, the two mysteries are nicely melded together, and the very likeable characters of Father John and Vicky are the glue that makes it all stick; their deep and abiding passion for each other, forbidden by the church that Father John finds himself questioning more and more, serves as a good foil to another romantic character, attorney Adam Lone Eagle, who has serious designs on Vicky, but whether or not his intentions are personal or professional is left up in the air. Coel tells an interesting story, set in an interesting part of the country that is remote enough that not many people really know about it, and yet mysterious for that very remoteness. Highly Recommended.

Awesome!
By Sheila
I love ALL of Nora Roberts books! There's always an adventure, humor, romance, suspense and fun! My sister owns & has read every book Nora has written a I've read a lot of them. The Trilogies are my favorites. When Nora has one coming out that we both want to read, as in the Dark Witch that's due out soon, I buy the 'actual' book so she can buy the one for her Kindle and neither of us has to wait for the other to finish before we can read it. We read it at the same time and share in the fun. We do the same with every one of her JD Robb books too. I would recommend ANY of Nora's books to anyone who enjoys reading adventures, laughing and commiserating with the characters and trying to solve the mysteries along the way. Always a great read and always great fun!

Outstanding Book
By Kindle Customer
This is such a great book, that I look forward to going back and reading these stories again like some that I already have, and I am impatient to read the rest of Nora Roberts' stories right now. Hot, Hot, Hot, love scenes, a well written, creative and intriguing story about family plus inventive, vivid characters, all on top of seriously wonderful love and romance. Each story is about one key person, usual in a family, or close group of friends, they are linked through intricate, messy links and it's almost like a movie you get the privilege of witnessing about these people's powerful, emotional, and often times painful journey towards falling in love. Roberts is one of my most favorite author's, and she doesn't disappoint in this series. Her unique style and classy, yet moving love scenes, paint a beautiful picture that leaves a person longing for something similar for themselves. All of that is combined into this fantastic series and make this book a "must-have"!!!! I didn't want to set it down....seriously!! Lol I was nodding off over my book on several different occasions. Worth the price and more to have a Nora Roberts book in your library collection!!!!!!

Friendship with God: An Uncommon Dialogue, by Neale Donald Walsch

The first book in a new series by the multimillion-copy bestselling author of Conversations with God.

Neale Donald Walsch has changed the way millions of Americans think about God. His Conversations with God series, book 1, book 2, and book 3, have all been New York Times bestsellers- book 1 for over two years.

The essence of Neale Donald Walsch's message lies at the heart of faith- the sacred place in every person, where he stands alone with his God. Walsch urges each of us to forge our own unique relationship with God, a God who is everywhere and speaks to us in all we do. It is up to us to stop and listen. It is up to us to respond...to begin the conversation. And a conversation is the first step, just as in any relationship, in establishing trust, in building friendship, in creating communion.

In Friendship with God, Neale Donald Walsch shares the next part of his journey, and leads us to deepen and strengthen our own bonds with God. He honors our heart's desire: a closer connection, richer and fuller. A friendship with God.

Amazon.com Review
Neale Donald Walsch grew up fearing God, especially after his mother, a neighborhood mystic, was caught reading cards for a friend. His mother was "trafficking with the devil," according to Walsch's deeply religious aunt, and as a result, "God will send her straight to hell."

That was the start of a relationship born of "fearship," as Walsch calls it. In Friendship with God, Walsh speaks to the struggles he's had learning to see God as a true friend rather than a punishing judge. Like his immensely popular Conversations with God series, Friendship with God is written mostly in dialogue format, modeling how anyone can converse with God. What makes the book especially accessible is Walsh's humble voice that gently addresses most people's confusion and doubts. For example, Walsh talks about feeling squeamish that God knows the shameful secrets of his life. In response, God points out that Walsh has shared his dark secrets with friends and lovers. So why not share these truths with God, who has never judged or punished him, and never will? These types of tender and reassuring conversations give readers the courage to begin their own private dialogues with the divine. --Gail Hudson

God and Neale do it again
By D J
I know there are many skeptics who don't believe God is speaking to us through Neale. As both Neale and God say in the first 3 books, if you don't believe it then that's ok, but at least read with an open mind, apply the principles to your life and experience a greater spiritual awareness. That is what I have done and it has had a profound impact on my life. Friendship with God is without a doubt Neale's finest work so far. It pulls together for the reader, many of the concepts explained in the CWG trilogy at a level that makes them practical to every day life. Additionally, it is very helpful (in my humble opinion), the hear about Neale's life, how he has evolved to where he is today, and how the "divine coincidences" played such a key role in getting him there. I believe if all of us take the time to think about similar coincidences in our lives that at least got us to the point of picking up the book and reading it, we will not be able to deny there is a true reason as to why we find ourselves here at this time. That in my view is what has helped me apply much of the teaching in this book to my life. If you read other books ie. Manifest your Destiny by Wayne Dyer, Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav and others it is clear (at least it is to me) that we are being taught a different way to "view" God in our lives. This view of a truly loving and nonjudgmental God differs greatly from many of the teachings the christian churches. I for one find this view very refreshing and can accept this as the real view for me. Again, I believe this book and others is simply showing us the way. And I thank Neale for taking what I believe was a risk to bring these teachings to us.

God talking or not-- why bother ask?
By A Customer
It is strange to see people still tripping over the idea of whether it is really God writing these books or not.
In my perspective it is a meaningless distinction. By the series own definition God is All That Is- everything which exists, both seen and unseen and neither. By this logic, it is God talking whether Neale is getting answers from a bird at his window, making it up himself, is chatting with his next door neighbour, or the messages are really coming from a source which would be equivalent to God for us.
The bottom line is that *any* source of information, however he received it, could be said to be God. So in the context of the books themselves, it is a non-issue.
Truly though, can the question be answered in any meaningful way? I don't think so because it just boils down to one person's opinion vs another's with no way of ever proving it objectively one way or the other. The question will have no satisfying answer, so why bother ask it?
For me the question is not "Is this God speaking?" but "How high is the quality of the information?" and "Is this useful?"
Personally I have found these books to be tremendously helpful in my life and I feel that if it is taken to heart it has the potential to not only transform ones life but enhance the lives of everyone on the planet beyond what most people can imagine. So for me the answer is "Yes, it is definitely useful."
A more subjective opinion is the quality of the info and how high its source is. My personal criteria for how "high" a source is how loving it is, how useful, how consistent, wise, open, honest, how much it resonates with my inner knowing, and how much sense it makes (there may be more but that's all I can think of at the moment).
From my reading of all the books in this series and other metaphysical/spiritual literature, this is in the top 3 for me- one of the 3 highest external sources of wisdom I've encountered anywhere.
Lets quit with the God-issue already =) Its been beaten to death. If you think the material isn't useful or doesn't come from a high source then say why. Be specific. This would be far more helpful to people deciding whether or not to buy the book than just saying "It is/ain't God."
Now, as for this book- I loved it.
For me it was the "missing link" from the other books- the one weak link I found with the previous books was that as they weren't practical enough. I just didn't know how to apply some of the broader concepts to my life.
Unlike the other books which focused on questions of the nature of life and the universe, Friendship with God primarily focuses on cultivating a personal spiritual path.
Some of highlights of the book: It (finally) goes into the 5 attitudes mentioned in the first book (joyful, loving, accepting, blessing, and grateful), explores further the "triangular code" from the second book (awareness, honesty, responsibility), 7 steps for a friendship with God, meditation, 3 "love-enders" (neediness, expectation, and jealousy), guidelines for living (living deliberately, harmoniously, beneficially), and an important discussion of the attitude of superiority (that "our path/god/way is better than yours").
I loved hearing more about Neale's life and his encounters with other "giants" in the field. I found his tone and attitude to be wonderfully refreshing- humble, genuine, honest, vulnerable, transparent. I truly admire this in him and he serves as a model for me in my own movement towards personal authenticity and visibility in dealing with others.
The book feels more personal than the others- it touches home more for me, and it came into my life exactly when I needed it to.
Other recommendations: If you like this material you might also like "Living with Joy" by Sanaya Roman and "Emmanuel's Book" by Pat Rodegast. These are the other 2 of the 3 highest sources I mentioned earlier. While they are not as well known as the CWG series I feel that they equal it in quality. They are among my all time favorite (and most influential) books.
The audio cassettes for CWG are also wonderfully done. Very lively, entertaining, and passionate. If listening to tapes are your cup of tea, be sure to check out volume 2 of the third book (there are 3 tape volumes per book)- the way they did Neale and Nancy's marriage ceremony is one of the most touching and beautiful things I've ever heard.

Disturbing, thought-provoking, & very inspiring
By A Customer
It is interesting to me in reading all of these reviews that many of the people writing them are doing exactly what "religions" and "demonimations" do in the name of "truth"--condeming and judging one another. The people who hate the books are "narrow-minded" fundamentalists, and the people who love them are godless "New-Agers." Surely the "contention" between people in these reviews must be disturbing to Neale, considering the fact that one of the basic premises of his books is the fact that there is no one true path but many ways to God, whether we choose to embrace fear in reaching God, or we choose freedom and love. I personally relate to everything everyone has written in these reviews, having been at each place at different points in my life. Ten years ago, as a fundamentalist Christian, having never studied anything except the Bible and the teachings of one or two mainline demoninations, I would have been completely unable to "receive" what Neale had to offer and would have, myself, condemed him as being an "Apostle" of Satan. In the fundamentalist churches, I was warned and taught to fear and hate the "Charismatics" who are too attuned to the "spirit" and are definitely receiving their information from Satan. Eventually, I embraced the Charismatic Church, where I was taught to be deathly afraid of Shirley MacClaine and any of her "New Age" mumbo jumbo, unless, of course, I wanted to end up in the fiery pits alongside her. However, having a searching heart and a desire for truth all my life and also a rather rebellious spirit, I sneaked a peek at her "forbidden" novels and found her to be fascinating and a woman with a sincere and honest desire to discover true meaning in life. This led to an earnest study of all world religons, and I realized what a "little" world I had lived in before and what a "fear" I had of opening my mind and letting go of my "self-hatred" and my "need" to be punished by an angry God. Bottom line--there is some truth and some error in every religion. I think the "Conversations" and "Friendship" books are wonderful, but I don't accept every word as being straight from God's mouth. Neale freely admits that he is a "filter" the same as were the writers of the Bible and the Talmud and every other Holy Book in history. The secret is in doing exactly what Neale has written about in these books--going to God and letting Him reveal His truth to you. God will not deny anyone who has a true desire to know, but that desire has to come with a willingness to admit that maybe you don't possess all the "truth" coming in and a willingness to "hear" truth that may not agree with what you have been taught all your life. God cannot reveal anything to someone who already has his mind made up!

Always exciting!
By Jo R. Gilbert
Higgins and I were born the same year so he can do little wrong. He was one of those authors I discovered while flying across one ocean or another that I continued to track once on land. Exciting, adventure tales always. His Nick Miller character was wroth several books; he has not moved on with him. Too bad!

Reprint of a Sergeant Nick Miller novel
By Fred Camfield
This is a 2005 reprint of a 1968 novel in the Sergeant Nick Miller series. The setting is a large city in northern England, but it is not clear, in this particular novel, which city. Perhaps the author expected readers to have read the earlier novels in the series. The story is a complex plot about a serial killer.

The story, like many others by Jack Higgins, takes place in a very short period of time - less than a week. A number of young women of the evening have been killed by an unknown assailant called The Rainlover in the press. Another murder occurs, but it does not quite fit the pattern.

The plot is complex, and a suspect emerges early in the story, but all is not quite as it seems with the last murder. An escaped criminal (a cat burgler) enters into the story to complicate matters. The final climax has the usual makings of a Jack Higgins novel as everything ends in a final battle.

I would note that I bought the novel for some light reading, and stayed up late to finish it. It is brain candy rather than great literature, but most certainly does not deserve the one star rating of the previous reviewer. If he is a Jack Higgins fan, I am not sure what he was expecting, particularly if he has read previous novels in this series.
