Sweetheart, Indiana
By Huntress Reviews
It's not Gary, Indiana, but it is the long lost home sweet home of the Charles family. Now that she's been left the estate, it's the town Gillian Charles owns, or will if she lives there six months. Rolling with the punches, she agrees to the terms of the will, moving into the executor's, Sam Law, house while he housesits for his parents. It's love at first sight, for her and his dog; maybe for the two humans as well. It's already assumed that they are in love, can reality be far behind? However, there is a sinister foe lurking, waiting for their chance to end all of Gillian's hopes if she gets in the way.

** There's a bit of everything in this novel; sensuality, humor, and suspense, but with so much, the overall effect shortchanges each aspect. **

I absolutely loved it!
By Shirley Jump
Sweetheart, Indiana is a wonderful town and a wonderful book! The characters are rich and warm, the setting true and as comforting as your favorite blanket, and the story itself filled with everything a reader could want--some sass, some laugh-out-loud lines and a touch of suspense. Gillian is not your average socialite and I found myself warming to her from the first page. Sam Law is, in a word, delicious, and I can't wait for his brother's book! All around, a great read with depth and wit!

I read the whole thing. There are gaps in the storyline. Huge chunks of time pass and you have to figure this out. AND the lead woman character is PERFECT. Perfect looking, speaking, every action is perfect. She doesn't make any mistakes- she is not human! The guy is great- at least he shows some humanity. Save your money, save your time for better books. This was a dud.

Combat Corpsman: The Vietnam Memoir of a Navy Seals Medic, by Greg McPartlin

All his life, Greg McPartlin wanted to be a Marine corpsman, a medic skilled at saving lives. Three months of "bagging-and-tagging" bodies during Vietnam's Tet Offensive took the luster off being a Marine-but not off McPartlin's desire to serve his country.

After assisting in the sea-recovery of Apollo 11-the first ship to bring men to the moon-the twenty-year-old McPartlin was redeployed to Vietnam as an elite Navy SEAL. Barred as a medic by the Geneva Convention from the make-or-break training considered vital to service as a Navy SEAL, McPartlin had to show he had what it took.

In a war where soldiers partied with their buddies in Saigon one day and crawled through an enemy-infested jungle hell the next, McPartlin proved that he was not only an outstanding medic but a real Navy SEAL-the toughest of the tough.

Combat Corpsman is McPartlin's account of his year in what had been a Viet Cong stronghold until the SEALs took control. It's the first inside story of a Navy SEAL medic, a man who wanted to heal-not to kill-but did both to save lives.

U.S. Navy SEAL Medic
By Kay's Husband
This is a very readable and informing memoir by a past Marine and eventual Navy SEAL Corpsman, better known as "Doc" to all those broken in combat he mended.

The majority of the book tells of his service in Vietnam during the mid to late 1960's, with the west coast branch of SEALS. Most SEALS were only stationed in country for 6 months at a time, for as the author states, the constant intensity could dull their senses, and that could cost them their lives. The North Vietnamese put bounties on all these "green faced men" hoping to kill a SEAL whenever possible. The bounty was both a tribute of their respect for the SEALS but also a sign of their deep-seated fear of the SEALS.

I was leaving the Navy to come back for college at about the time Greg McPartlin was entering the Navy. So some of the topics he talks about are very familiar to me, but a reader does not need to be "prior service" to read and enjoy this book.

In a review written for The Military Book Club recently, I stated that this book is one of very few excellent books it's been my good fortune to encounter. His story and that of his fellow SEALS will give the reader an insider's view of the "above and beyond" nature of service all these men gave, and each of these individuals are true heroes in the best sense of the word. Though undoubtedly each would not find that a compliment with which they are comfortable. They, for example, would turn down a Purple Heart award, unless they were terribly wounded. No rear echelon types here; however that may be, all of these men are some of the finest to ever wear the uniform of the United States.

Only two items would have made this a stronger book: a good map of Vietnam showing the area Mr. McPartlin describes; and a few pictures of all the men in his group. But that not withstanding, this is a very readable and memorable book written by a combatant as seen through the eyes of a medic. A truly unique writing from one who not only took lives, but saved lives.

Semper Fi.

The toughest of the toughest
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
If Navy SEALs are considered the toughest combat troops in the US forces, then their corpsmen have to be the toughest of the toughest. Here is the story of a young man's search for significance and adventure played out in the crucible of Vietnam. Young men like Mr. McPartlin are America's greatest asset. That there are such men in an the modern age of cynicism and distrust is nothing short of amazing. As the legendary Col. John Boyd was fond of reminding us, "machines don't fight wars, people do, and they use their minds." Upon reading this book, one would add "the toughest use their heart."

In this book, Mr. McPartlin takes us to the heart of the warrior code. Along the way he applies that code not just to a passion for battle but a passion for the lives of his fellow warriors as well as the enemy combatants he finds in his care. Here is the epitomy of an American warrior hero. Mr. McPartlin represents the kind of American warrior we all wish we could be - courageous, tough, and yet without loss of compassion. The toughest of the tough are those willing to care in the face of hopeless and impossible situations. Once you start the journey with Mr. McPartlin, you will want to carry on to the end.

AN AWAKENING!
By EMT
This book found me. I was not exactly looking for a good book to curl up with. As a matter of fact, I was not looking for a book at all! I was shopping for my home when I found this book laying with some discounted cook books on display. My father was a combat medic in Vietnam at the same time the author was. I had lost my father 6 months prior to finding this book in 2009. Spooky, but true. Anyway, It peeked my curiosity and I bought the book. A TRULY AWESOME BOOK!!!! Those of you who are retired service men and women of the Vietnam war or have family members who have served in Vietnam who cannot talk openly about experiences of the war and who have suffered with PTSD for many years (as did my father who never openly spoke of his experience). This book gives a vivid depiction AND understanding of what it was like there. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

What could have been a good book ruined by a literary device
By D. Migliaccio
I'm a big reader of forensic studies of crime, but this one hits a new low in clunky formats. Lee (with co-author LaBriola) reviews a number of famous cases, including the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman, the JonBenet Ramsey case, the Lindbergh kidnappingm, the Sacco and Vanzetti trials and more. Lee and LaBriola's analysis of the cases themselves are intriguing, but why, oh why did they feel it necessary to encumber the book with the fictional character of one "Sam Constant?" This "dream" character materializes to draw Lee back in time to visit the older cases, or in the more recent ones, to deliver his opinion as the voice of the General Public. It's a terrible device, blundering and awkward, badly written, and in the end manages to make the authors look foolish and takes away from their veracity as scientists.

How Past Errors Continue Today
By Acute Observer
Famous Crimes Revisited: From Sacco-Vanzetti to O.J. Simpson

Dr. Henry Lee is Chief Emeritus of the Connecticut State Police Forensic Science Laboratory and has extensive credentials. He investigated over 6,000 major crime cases. Dr. Jerry Labriola is an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut Medical School and has practiced medicine for over 30 years. He is an experienced writer. "Sam Constant" is a fictional character who expresses the sentiments of the time. The `Prologue' explains the style of writing for this book, a way to journey to past events and comment on them using the latest scientific knowledge. The authors believe the same technical and judgmental errors continue to this day (p.xiv). External factors affect the legal process. This book has no index.

Section 1 deal with the Sacco-Vanzetti case, both were executed for a robbery-murder they most likely did not commit. There was a "highly unusual" trial for a lesser crime prior to a major crime (p.33). Vanzetti was delivering fish to his customers at the time of the crime (p.41). The head of the Massachusetts State Police believed they were innocent (p.43). Boston agents of the Department of Justice believed the crime was the work of professional gangsters (p.49). There were problems with eyewitness evidence (Chapter 5). There was tampering and suppression of evidence (p.64). Chapter 6 discusses the ballistic evidence, and the lack of a chain of custody. Both the shells and bullets could have been tampered with (pp.78-79). Vanzetti's revolver was not the guard's gun, he was framed (pp.90-91). The claim of "consciousness of guilt" seems to be a euphemism for prejudice (p.91). Sacco & Vanzetti lied about their activities to hide their anarchistic beliefs. Reporters thought the trial was not fairly and impartially conducted.

Section 2 covers five famous flawed cases. Edmond Locard noted the existence of trace evidence (p.103). The footprints outside the Lindbergh home were not measured, photographed, or cast in plaster (p.113). There were no fingerprints anywhere in the nursery (p.114)! A year later some of the ransom money was traced to Bruno Hauptmann (he entered the country illegally and had a criminal record in Germany). Hauptmann's writing was similar to the writing on the ransom note, but document examiners for the Secret Service and Army say Hauptmann did not write the ransom notes (p.118). [This is not an exact science.] Dr. Lee has 24 questions about this case (pp.126-129). One question should be about the pajamas worn by the baby; whoever had them was the kidnapper. Dr. Sam Sheppard was convicted due to commercial rivalry and prejudice. Coroner Gerber was out to get "the Sheppard clan", whose suburban hospital competed with the Cleveland Hospital. Dr. Paul L. Kirk's 1954 examination of the murder scene (after the trial!) documented the facts [Paul Holmes' 1961 book].

The assassination of JFK was never solved, Oswald was neither convicted or even indicted. David Wrone's "The Zapruder Film" explains why Oswald was in the doorway when the first shot was fired, and two films from across the street show nobody at that 6th floor window. [George O'Toole's 1975 book "The Assassination Tapes" provided the evidence to reopen the investigation. The "magic bullet" was not recovered at the crime scene, but was found (or planted) at Parkland Hospital (p.152). Was Vincent Foster a suicide or murder victim? There are arguments for each theory (pp. 175-177). The Starr Report said suicide (p.165). Was JonBenet Ramsey killed by an intruder or insider? The arguments for each theory are on pages 177-178. It is still unsolved.

Section 3 discusses the O. J. Simpson trial. OJ went from a sports hero to a reviled villain in just a few weeks. Has this ever happened before? There was racial bias over the trial and verdict, the facts weren't important! Nicole Brown Simpson's 911 transcript is on pages 189-195. No one was assaulted or arrested but it made people believe OJ was guilty. [Was this tamer than some Jerry Springer shows?] The grand jury was cancelled because they refused to indict OJ for murder; then they used a preliminary hearing to indict OJ. Chapter 1 does not mention that Nicole's boyfriend was about the same size and age as Ron Goldman (mistaken identity?). Chapter 2 has discrepancies in the time line from other books. Fuhrman found a still wet glove at 6am (p.207). There were problems in falsification of a legal document, and mishandling and/or fabrication of evidence (p.211). The Fourth Amendment bans illegally obtained evidence. This safeguards people against government intrusions (pp.212-213). There were conflicts in the testimony of Vannatter and Fuhrman (p.217). The coroner said the time of death was after 11pm (p.219). Two different types of stab wounds were found. Where was the bloody clothing, shoes, and murder weapon (p.219)? Why was a bloody glove placed in the backyard?

Chapter 4 deals with the trial. Robert Shapiro assembled a "dream team" of experts for the defense (p.226). The defense said evidence that exonerated OJ had been disregarded (p.228). Evidence collection did not always follow protocol (p.229). There were problems in the evidence that suggested planting (p.230). The use of videotapes from this highly publicized case provided evidence on the procedures (p.231). Dr. Lee has 16 questions about the facts in this case (pp.238-239). [The answer to #16 may be that the Bronco was parked there after the limo drive exited.] Chapter 5 discusses the opposing viewpoints of the major evidence in this trial. There were many examples where the prosecution claims did not match what the defense experts observed (p.243). The 'Epilogue' explains how public opinion (manufactured by the media) affects a trial. There was suspicion of evidence suppression, tampering with evidence, perjury, and destruction or falsification of records (p.250). While science has advanced, fallible human beings can still make errors.

The 'Appendix' discusses the past, present, and future of forensic science. It provides an outline for the general reader. [The paragraph on "voice-prints" may be outdated.] The 'Bibliography' contains the names of books and articles on the seven cases in this book. [It does not list James Neff's "The Wrong Man", or "Killing Time" by Donald Freed and Raymond Briggs.]

Reunion in Death, by J. D. Robb

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts, writing as J.D. Robb, comes a compelling new novel in the futuristic series…A birthday bash sets the scene for a frightening reunion with a killer from Eve Dallas’s past…

At exactly 7:30 p.m., Walter Pettibone arrived home to over a hundred friends and family shouting, “surprise!” It was his birthday. Although he had known about the planned event for weeks, the real surprise was yet to come. At 8:45 p.m., a woman with emerald eyes and red hair handed him a glass of champagne. One sip of birthday bubbly, and he was dead.

The woman’s name is Julie Dockport. No one at the party knew who she was. But Detective Eve Dallas remembers her all too well. Eve was personally responsible for her incarceration nearly ten years ago. And now, let out on good behavior, she still has nothing but bad intentions. It appears she wants to meet Dallas again—in a reunion neither will forget…

From Publishers Weekly
Seasoned author Nora Roberts, writing as Robb, delivers another exhilarating entry in her popular futuristic cop series featuring Eve Dallas (Seduction in Death, etc.). Dallas, a New York police lieutenant, is a hard-bitten warrior cop who buries the pain and anger of her early childhood by excelling on the job. In her latest adventure, all the usual suspects are back: Eve's charismatic husband, Roarke; her plucky assistant, Peabody; and hipster techno-geek McNab. For this round, their objective is to take down a woman Eve arrested 10 years ago, a poisoner named Julianna Dunne. Julianna's out on parole, and now rich old men are dying sudden deaths. What's more, the ex-con wants to exact a little revenge on her one-time adversary. Eve's search for Dunne takes her all over the country, and eventually to Dallas, Tex., the city that gave her both her name and a legacy of violent nightmares. This is a satisfying, well-paced novel that offers readers a little of everything sex, death, family drama and well-orchestrated chase scenes. Although Robb's plot is tight and suspenseful, the real pleasure here comes from watching Eve struggle to maintain her distance from others, even as she finds herself tied ever more closely to her friends and family by the bonds of love. (Mar. 5)Forecast: It's a given that Roberts's books will grace the bestseller charts, but a stylish cover image depicting a ghostly, Manhattan subway entrance may attract new readers.

From Library Journal
The most recent chapter of Robb's popular series features Lt. Eve Dallas facing a recently released murderer back to get even. Early in her career, Eve testified against Julianna Dunn, and, during her incarceration, Julianna has been planning how to confuse, humiliate, and ultimately destroy her. This violent reunion begins with the poisoning of middle-aged, wealthy men in seemingly innocuous circumstances on Eve's New York City beat and soon looks like it will culminate with the killing of her husband, Roark. Disconcerting houseguests, a tense visit into Eve's childhood in the city of Dallas, and a comic scene searching for clues in the New York underworld add to the plot and give reader Susan Ericksen the opportunity to charm the listener thoroughly. Her reading is full of color: her accent, pitch, and pacing all add to the listening experience and make this one difficult tape to pause. Recommended for popular collections.

From Booklist
Robb's style is so edgy and raw that at times it's hard to believe that she is also best-selling romancer Nora Roberts. Shortly after wealthy older men with no known enemies start being poisoned, detective Eve Dallas determines that Julianna Dunne, a wily ex-con, is the perpetrator. The beautiful but chameleonlike murderess is using the killings to get to Eve, who had put her behind bars nearly a decade earlier. Eve's pursuit takes her back to her own traumatic roots, thus providing fans of the series with a more detailed description of her horrendous childhood. In addition, Eve mentors her protege, Peabody, with gritty advice: "And when you step down there, you remember you're one bad bitch cop, and you drink blood for breakfast." Fourteenth in the futuristic romantic suspense series, this novel takes place as the lusty marriage of Eve and her husband, the fabulously wealthy Rourke, approaches the one-year mark. One of the best in the series!
By P. Shropshire
This is definitely one of my favorite books in the series! The titular reunion happens when a convicted murderer that Eve had arrested, Julianna Dunne, is released from prison and returns to killing. Julianna has a deep-seated contempt for men in general and a twisted respect for Eve. She was convicted for killing two husbands for money, although she got away with killing the first husband because she claimed diminished capacity due to be sexually abused by her stepfather while she was a teenager in Texas.

Twisted respect for Eve, yes, but she still wants revenge for the years in prison. So she kills 3 targets - middle-aged, affluent, nice men - just because she can. Then Eve gets a hunch that she will soon target Roarke as final revenge. In the meantime, Eve is doing the routine work to track Dunne down, but stays a step behind.

Eve, accompanied by Roarke, goes to Texas to interview the stepfather, who lives on a ranch outside Dallas. I absolutely loved Eve's encounter with Texas and rural America!!!

"“This guy’s loaded,” she went on, slightly mollified by the roaring clack of a helicopter that buzzed the near field. “He’s got a thriving, successful business in Dallas. But he chooses to live out here. Voluntarily. There’s something really sick about that.”"

"She let out a little breath of relief when she spotted the ranch house. It was enormous, sprawling all over hell and back on one story. Portions of it were painted that same bright white and others looked to be fashioned from stones cobbled all together on a whim. There were sections built of glass, and she nearly shuddered at the idea of standing there looking out at field after field. And having what was in those fields looking in at her."

LOL!!!

Then Eve has Roarke take her into Dallas, to the location where she had been found as a half-starved, abused and broken 8-year old. She relives the events leading up to when she finally killed her father. And she has no nightmares after that, for the rest of the book.

There are some many good bits in this one. Peabody gets to solve her first case in her own. Peabody's parents come to visit and turn out to be quite the interesting couple!

Dr. Mira goes to visit Roarke after Eve confronts her memories. "How difficult for him, she thought, this man who looks like, thinks like, a warrior to stand without a lance to protect what he values most."

" I love her, too.”

He looked at her, that serene face, those eyes so filled with quiet understanding. “Yes, I see you do.”

"And you.”

He blinked once, slowly, as if translating some foreign tongue. With a soft laugh, she got to her feet. “The pair of you always seem so baffled and suspicious when offered free affection. You’re a good man, Roarke,” she said and kissed his cheek.

The usual banter between Eve and Peabody: "“Do you think adding ‘sir’ on the end of that is going to save you from my considerable wrath?”

"Maybe, but I’m more confident I can outrun you in your current state of health.” She held up two fingers. “How many do you see?”

“The two I’m going to rip off and stuff in your ears.”

"Oddly, it reassures me to hear that, Lieutenant.”

And a very unusual tender moment between them:

"No, sir.” Her voice was thick as she lifted those drenched eyes to Eve’s. And smiled. “She gave it to you, and that means she trusts you. She accepts. You’re family. And you put it there, right there on your desk, and that means you accept. It’s a real moment for me,” she added and dug out a handkerchief. “I love you, Dallas.”

"Oh jeez. If you try to kiss me, I’ll deck you.”

And Roarke, being Roarke:
(Eve) "How about if I just call you the Civilian Roarke? You know, like a title.”

"Perhaps if you punched it up just a bit. As in the Awesome and All-Powerful Civilian Roarke. Has a ring.”

And finally, when Eve FINALLY gets her woman: "Now I’m going to give you your civil right to remain silent.” So saying Eve punched her full in the face and knocked her cold.

In short, this book is awesome and if you haven't read it, you should do so immediately. After you read the first 13 of them, of course.

are the best, and the person narrating is fantastic
By Teresa L. Anthony
Nora Roberts could never let me down, JD Robb books, are the best, and the person narrating is fantastic, I love how she can do Roarkes Irish tone and insert it into the story, along with the versions from the other Characters. I highly recommend these books, I have taken them everywhere, they have helped me through some serious hospital stays, and long recuperation times at home. I love knowing that I can have these books in paperback, on my kindle, and on my Audible Ipod. Just started Purity In Death, and am very curious as to what it is.

A fun read!
By L. Quido
I buy each J.D. Robb paperback as soon as it comes out and find the futuristic stories about Eve Dallas, Robb's tough female cop to be truly engaging.
The villain of this tale is a woman Eve has faced before, and she is identified quickly, but is not so easy to catch! I really enjoyed the final confrontation between Julianna and Eve,
loved meeting Peabody's warm hearted parents, and found the bit about Eve visiting the wide open spaces of Texas very funny! A really terrific subplot involves Eve giving Peabody her own case, and teaching and delegating in a way that gives Peabody just the right amount of independence. Eve Dallas, repeating the pattern taught by her own mentor....
Not enough Mavis or Nadine in the novel, and Robb backs off of the Charles/Laura relationship, and a little bit off McNab/Peabody that were introduced in prior books. I think the books need more of their support.
This book completes the first year cycle of Eve's marriage to Roarke, as they celebrate their anniversary, and we can hope that Robb will not grow tired of her feisty lieutenant before their second anniversary.
Definitely worth buying!

Thirty Years of Sausage...Fifty Years of Ham, by Donna Meade Dean, Jimmy Dean

Jimmy Dean and his wife Donna chronicle his amazing rise-from backroad music gigs to playing The Grand Ole Opry to headlining Carnegie Hall and the London Palladium to the coast-to-coast smash of his own TV show to his Grammy Award-winning spot on the country charts to his investment in the Jimmy Dean Meat Company, which evolved into a phenomenal business success and American tradition.

This is also a candid and affectionate portrait of the legends who crossed Jimmy's path, including Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Roy Rogers, Jack Benny, George Burns, Roy Clark, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jimmy Durante, Jim Henson, John F. Kennedy, Sean Connery, and even George Bush.

The Deans also share the incredible story of the multi-million-dollar business venture that made him a household name-and the "deal from hell" with the Sara Lee company that become one of the most challenging periods of Jimmy's life.

Brimming with good will, folksy humor, nuggets of wisdom, and down-home philosophy, this is a story of a life well-lived that will charm, enthrall, and surprise Jimmy Dean's legion of fans.

From Publishers Weekly
This mainly pleasant memoir covers the author's life from hardscrabble West Texas childhood through success as a country and western entertainer to fulfillment as a sausage mogul voted "the number one meat spokesperson of all time." Dean has a "jillion" anecdotes about touring with the band, playing rodeos and state fairs, his recurring gig on The Daniel Boone Show, hosting and guesting a slew of 1960s variety shows and encountering a galaxy of fellow celebrities, from the hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Patsy Cline to Elvis himself, on whose advice he unwisely took some "energy" pills during a fatiguing stint in Vegas. Decorated with folksy aphorisms (one carousing associate was "so high he could go duck hunting with a rake") and sentimental lyrics from his trademark "recitation" ballads, his reminiscences are happy-go-lucky and detached, with a minimum of rancor against agents ("a necessary evil") and network suits ("they had bent me and changed me"). The book comes alive when Dean gives up the songs for the sausage, which brought him riches but also precipitated a wrenching break with his business-partner brother and led to a disillusioning betrayal by the "liars, turncoats, cutthroats" at the Sara Lee Corporation after they bought his company. Who knew that pork processing could be even crueler than showbiz? Photos.

A walk down memory lane
By Douglas Mcdonough
Quite a story from quite a guy. Wonderful walk down memory lane in a no-holds barred account of his life in West Texas and beyond. Jimmy Dean has too long been overlooked as one of the early Country Music pioneers and once its biggest star. And, he makes some pretty good sausage.

Thirty Years of Sausage, Fifty Years of Ham
By cherie robinson
I enjoyed reading the book very much. I did not really know much about Jimmy's early carear, nor when he got into the meat business. His story was very interesting and informative and did read like he was in the room talking about his experiences, in person. I always liked him and felt that he was an honest person, and the story backed up my opinion.

Cross Lassie with E.T., add a touch of The Wolfen and a dash of The Godfather, and you get a sense of some of the ingredients in this supernatural thriller, which should move Koontz ( Strangers a notch closer to Stephen King's high-rent district. When Travis Cornell, Koontz's appealing hero, encounters a stray dog while hiking, he quickly realizes that the animal is most unusual and that something terrifying is stalking them both. The encounter with the dog is the beginning of a tightly woven plot involving genetic manipulation that has created two extraordinary animals; one is the dog, named Einstein, the other is a murderous hybrid called "The Outsider." Hunted down by both the government and a professional killer who has learned the secret of the animals, Travis, Einstein and Nora Devon, a lonely woman befriended by man and canine, attempt to escape their pursuers all the while knowing that a confrontation with The Outsider is inevitable. Though the climax packs a little less wallop than it deserves, this is the sort of thoroughly frightening and entertaining tale that has its readers listening for noises in the night. 100,000 first printing; 100,000 ad/promo; Liteary Guild main selection.

YA A book that incorporates elements of both the horror tale and the action thriller, and the result is an intriguing and enjoyable novel. Watchers is a retelling of the Frankenstein theme with a twist: two creatures, quite different from each other, roam the land. Two animals who are unlike any other animals as a result of DNA research escape from a top-secret laboratory. One is divinely inspiring, engendering love and caring. The other is a hellish nightmare that leaves unspeakable slaughter in its wake. The two creatures and a supporting cast of charactersa government agent, a hired killer, a decent recluse, and a lonely womanare inevitably brought together in a climactic and satisfying showdown. While the plot developments occasionally seem a bit forcedthis is one book that could actually have profited by some extra lengththe shortcomings are minor. Watchers is a satisfying example of good storytelling. Karl Penny, Houston Public Library

From Library Journal
When the Russians sabotage a genetic research project in California, two mutated creatures escape from the lab. One is a golden retriever with high enough intelligence to think and communicate with humans; the other is the Outsider, a vicious monster created from a baboon and bred to kill. Both the man who befriends and adopts the dog and his new bride find themselves stalked by government agents anxious to find the dog, a particularly repulsive Mafia hit man intent on stealing him, and the Outsider, with whom the dog is linked telepathically. Koontz ( Strangers ) is truly a master at creating suspense, and his opening and closing scenes are full of delicious tension. Only in the middle does the chase seem a bit long. But Koontz is in top form with an exciting premise, likable heroes, and the most endearing nonhuman since E.T. For all popular fiction collections. Eric W. Johnson, Univ. of Bridgeport Lib., Ct.

The Best You Can Get
By Donald Brickeen
This is the first novel I ever read written by Koontz, and to this day I must confess that it is still my favorite. Indeed, it may very well be my favorite book of all time.
The strength of the story, of course, lies with "Einstein", and his interaction with the other characters in the story. I'm not a dog lover by any stretch of the imagination, but I fell for this dog deeply. Koontz does a brilliant job of describing Einstein's feelings (read the book and this statment will make more sense, I assure you), so as you begin to view the dog as a human. It happens so gradually through the novel that you don't even realize it till it's too late.
The main theme of this book is LOYALTY. Not just with Einstein and the other characters, but more so with the humans he comes into contact with. I'm not sure if Koontz is a dog lover or not, but he sure made one out of me!
I have read this book more times than I care to mention, and each time I am still filled with the same emotions at the same incerpts on the same pages...This novel is indeed THAT powerful. Regardless of whether you enjoy pets or not, do yourself a favor, and read this novel.

Starts out great, but as character development progresses, the story loses credibility.
By Kathleen Boyd
This books starts out great! The characters and plot are very interesting; however, the story while believable at first, ends up being pretty far-fetched, especially with some of the "dialog" from one particular character. The story would have been better if the author didn't go overboard in the development of one particular character. While the book is entertaining at first, I lost interest three-quarters of the way through it and had difficulty finishing it because the story became so unbelievable. This was the first Dean Koontz book I've read and may be my last, especially since he claims that it is his best work so far.

Spoiler alert! This book has made it to my top 10 most favorite books of all times.

Spoiler alert! This book has made it to my top 10 most favorite books of all times. A genetically engineered golden retriever with the intelligence of a human being, who communicates with alphabet blocks or computer keyboard, what more do you need in a story? Oh, perhaps the fact that, this little pooch also acted as the matchmaker for the two main characters in this book. It broke my heart that he almost died with distemper and almost killed by the outsider at the end; but the story did have a happy ending.

Murder on Mulberry Bend: A Gaslight Mystery, by Victoria Thompson

Sarah Brandt, a midwife in turn-of-the-century New York City, has seen more than her share of joy and sorrow, birth and death. Now she will see for the first time how the squalor of the streets can breed madness and murder…

The Prodigal Son Mission on Mulberry Bend stands as a refuge for girls who otherwise would have to live by selling the only thing they have of value—themselves. The work being done there so impresses Sarah that she volunteers to help out however she can—with clothes, with medical assistance, with the organization of a benefit dinner. And when one of the girls is found dead and refused burial because of her former life, Sarah’s passion for justice is aroused.

Reluctantly, Sergeant Frank Malloy agrees to look into the death, if only to keep Sarah from endangering herself by pursuing the matter. But Sarah cannot be kept out of the investigation—and just as Malloy feared, her attempts to find the cause of the unfortunate girl’s death in the circumstances of her life put her in deadly danger—from an unexpected source…

Who killed the girl from the mission and why
By Dawn Dowdle
The time is the turn-of-the-century. Sarah Brandt, a New York midwife, accompanies her friend Richard Dennis to The Prodigal Son Mission. He wants to find out more about the work his late wife Helen did there. Sarah donates clothing to the mission.
Sergeant Frank Malloy is called to the scene of a dead woman in City Hall Park. He recognizes the hat as Sarah's and is convinced she is dead. He is quite relieved to find it was not her and agrees to investigate the death. Sarah is able to identify the woman as Emilia, a girl she met at the mission.
Sarah is so impressed with the work of the mission that she decides to volunteer her time and agrees to help host a dinner at her parents' house to raise money for the mission. She is also looking into Emilia's death. Frank has forbidden her to do this, but it doesn't seem to stop her.
Emilia's family is no help. Sarah begins to get an uneasy feeling at the mission. Could one of the girls killed Emilia out of jealousy? Could someone in Emilia's former life have caused her death? The Catholic church refuses to bury her due to her past. So many questions but as Sarah gets closer to the truth, she is put into danger just as Frank feared.
There are very few mysteries set back in history that I enjoy reading. This series is one. The characters and settings are so real and the lack of conveniences only enhances the story.
I really enjoy the relationship between Frank and Sarah, although I hope in the future that they get together. The tension does add to the story. Her neighbor Mrs. Ellsworth is a great character as well. She really adds character to the story.
I am always amazed by the immense poverty. This book brings a lot of that forward as the mission is a dangerous area of town as is Emilia's parents' apartment. Frank constantly travels through dangerous parts of town looking for Danny to get information.
I highly recommend this book and series.

Dear God, I'm Addicted...

Another stunner from Victoria Thompson! Ever since I first picked up "Murder on Astor Place", I haven't been able to get quite my fair share of this series! If you love gothic mysteries with character depth and a heady atmosphere, I think you soon will share my fate as well...
The fifth in the Gaslight Series, this one involves the unusual murder of a former prostitute who at the time of her death was residing in the Prodigal Son Mission (I do agree with Frank, the name is rather hypocritical), a combination of Protestant finishing school and settlement house on Mulberry Bend, located in the slums of Little Italy and nearby the police headquarters. An acquaintance of our heroine, midwife and sometime-detective Sarah Brandt, her murder doesn't sit well with our Sarah, and thus she feels compelled to bring the killer to justice, even if it means dragging her grumbling Detective Sergeant friend, Frank Malloy, along for the ride. And so, our two investigators trek through the tragic and unsavory districts of Old New York, only to discover their murderer to be closer than they had ever thought. Little side-note: if you've read Anne Perry's "The Cater Street Hangman", it may not come as quite a shocker...
Even as intriguing as the mystery itself, okay, perhaps a tiny bit more, is the ever-developing personal trauma of our characters. Be delighted with the progress of Malloy's son, Brian, and watch the internal battles for Sarah between said Malloy and her new friend, Richard Dennis. And for all those wondering about Sarah's late husband's death, there too you'll find heartbreak! Also, I must warn you, the end is extremely maddening, and I'll be on the most painful assortment of pins and needles until the next in the series. Not saying that that takes away any bit from thoroughly enjoying this lovely little tryst!
P.S. - The next in the series, "Murder on Marble Row", is dated for release next June, and will also be coming out in Hardcover. And to the extreme delight of this particular audience, the author has been promised to many more books to come in the series! So need not worry about that wretched event when the Gaslights might be cut short in their youth, and much congrats to Ms. Thompson!

A murder, a romance, and a clue
By Rocco Dormarunno
19th Century New York City, with its desperate poverty, dazzling excesses, corrupt administrations, and flood of immigrants has long been fertile ground for crime fiction. Like Caleb Carr and Jack Finney, Victoria Thompson is one of the few writers to successfully utilize and represent this world without imposing our 21st Century values on it.
Murder on Mulberry Bend, specifically, best captures this fascinating cityscape. The unlikely team of midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy is a pleasure to watch interact. The tensions between them--romantic and professional--really come to a crisis point here. The murder mystery element of the book is what we've come to expect from Ms. Thompson: twisting, suspenseful, and completely satisfying. But this story gives us an added bonus: we get a very compelling hint as to who may have murdered Sarah's beloved husband, Tom. Read it and enjoy!
