From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts, writing as J.D. Robb, comes a compelling new novel in the futuristic series…A birthday bash sets the scene for a frightening reunion with a killer from Eve Dallas’s past…

At exactly 7:30 p.m., Walter Pettibone arrived home to over a hundred friends and family shouting, “surprise!” It was his birthday. Although he had known about the planned event for weeks, the real surprise was yet to come. At 8:45 p.m., a woman with emerald eyes and red hair handed him a glass of champagne. One sip of birthday bubbly, and he was dead.

The woman’s name is Julie Dockport. No one at the party knew who she was. But Detective Eve Dallas remembers her all too well. Eve was personally responsible for her incarceration nearly ten years ago. And now, let out on good behavior, she still has nothing but bad intentions. From Publishers Weekly
Seasoned author Nora Roberts, writing as Robb, delivers another exhilarating entry in her popular futuristic cop series featuring Eve Dallas (Seduction in Death, etc.). Dallas, a New York police lieutenant, is a hard-bitten warrior cop who buries the pain and anger of her early childhood by excelling on the job. In her latest adventure, all the usual suspects are back: Eve's charismatic husband, Roarke; her plucky assistant, Peabody; and hipster techno-geek McNab. For this round, their objective is to take down a woman Eve arrested 10 years ago, a poisoner named Julianna Dunne. Julianna's out on parole, and now rich old men are dying sudden deaths. What's more, the ex-con wants to exact a little revenge on her one-time adversary. Eve's search for Dunne takes her all over the country, and eventually to Dallas, Tex., the city that gave her both her name and a legacy of violent nightmares. This is a satisfying, well-paced novel that offers readers a little of everything sex, death, family drama and well-orchestrated chase scenes. Although Robb's plot is tight and suspenseful, the real pleasure here comes from watching Eve struggle to maintain her distance from others, even as she finds herself tied ever more closely to her friends and family by the bonds of love. (Mar. 5)Forecast: It's a given that Roberts's books will grace the bestseller charts, but a stylish cover image depicting a ghostly, Manhattan subway entrance may attract new readers.

From Library Journal
The most recent chapter of Robb's popular series features Lt. Eve Dallas facing a recently released murderer back to get even. Early in her career, Eve testified against Julianna Dunn, and, during her incarceration, Julianna has been planning how to confuse, humiliate, and ultimately destroy her. This violent reunion begins with the poisoning of middle-aged, wealthy men in seemingly innocuous circumstances on Eve's New York City beat and soon looks like it will culminate with the killing of her husband, Roark. Disconcerting houseguests, a tense visit into Eve's childhood in the city of Dallas, and a comic scene searching for clues in the New York underworld add to the plot and give reader Susan Ericksen the opportunity to charm the listener thoroughly. Her reading is full of color: her accent, pitch, and pacing all add to the listening experience and make this one difficult tape to pause. Recommended for popular collections.

From Booklist
Robb's style is so edgy and raw that at times it's hard to believe that she is also best-selling romancer Nora Roberts. Shortly after wealthy older men with no known enemies start being poisoned, detective Eve Dallas determines that Julianna Dunne, a wily ex-con, is the perpetrator. The beautiful but chameleonlike murderess is using the killings to get to Eve, who had put her behind bars nearly a decade earlier. Eve's pursuit takes her back to her own traumatic roots, thus providing fans of the series with a more detailed description of her horrendous childhood. In addition, Eve mentors her protege, Peabody, with gritty advice: "And when you step down there, you remember you're one bad bitch cop, and you drink blood for breakfast." Fourteenth in the futuristic romantic suspense series, this novel takes place as the lusty marriage of Eve and her husband, the fabulously wealthy Rourke, approaches the one-year mark. One of the best in the series!
By P. Shropshire
This is definitely one of my favorite books in the series! The titular reunion happens when a convicted murderer that Eve had arrested, Julianna Dunne, is released from prison and returns to killing. Julianna has a deep-seated contempt for men in general and a twisted respect for Eve. She was convicted for killing two husbands for money, although she got away with killing the first husband because she claimed diminished capacity due to be sexually abused by her stepfather while she was a teenager in Texas.

Twisted respect for Eve, yes, but she still wants revenge for the years in prison. So she kills 3 targets - middle-aged, affluent, nice men - just because she can. Then Eve gets a hunch that she will soon target Roarke as final revenge. In the meantime, Eve is doing the routine work to track Dunne down, but stays a step behind.

Eve, accompanied by Roarke, goes to Texas to interview the stepfather, who lives on a ranch outside Dallas. I absolutely loved Eve's encounter with Texas and rural America!!!

"“This guy’s loaded,” she went on, slightly mollified by the roaring clack of a helicopter that buzzed the near field. “He’s got a thriving, successful business in Dallas. But he chooses to live out here. Voluntarily. There’s something really sick about that.”"

"She let out a little breath of relief when she spotted the ranch house. It was enormous, sprawling all over hell and back on one story. Portions of it were painted that same bright white and others looked to be fashioned from stones cobbled all together on a whim. There were sections built of glass, and she nearly shuddered at the idea of standing there looking out at field after field. And having what was in those fields looking in at her."

LOL!!!

Then Eve has Roarke take her into Dallas, to the location where she had been found as a half-starved, abused and broken 8-year old. She relives the events leading up to when she finally killed her father. And she has no nightmares after that, for the rest of the book.

There are some many good bits in this one. Peabody gets to solve her first case in her own. Peabody's parents come to visit and turn out to be quite the interesting couple!

Dr. Mira goes to visit Roarke after Eve confronts her memories. "How difficult for him, she thought, this man who looks like, thinks like, a warrior to stand without a lance to protect what he values most."

" I love her, too.”

He looked at her, that serene face, those eyes so filled with quiet understanding. “Yes, I see you do.”

"And you.”

He blinked once, slowly, as if translating some foreign tongue. With a soft laugh, she got to her feet. “The pair of you always seem so baffled and suspicious when offered free affection. You’re a good man, Roarke,” she said and kissed his cheek.

The usual banter between Eve and Peabody: "“Do you think adding ‘sir’ on the end of that is going to save you from my considerable wrath?”

"Maybe, but I’m more confident I can outrun you in your current state of health.” She held up two fingers. “How many do you see?”

“The two I’m going to rip off and stuff in your ears.”

"Oddly, it reassures me to hear that, Lieutenant.”

And a very unusual tender moment between them:

"No, sir.” Her voice was thick as she lifted those drenched eyes to Eve’s. And smiled. “She gave it to you, and that means she trusts you. She accepts. You’re family. And you put it there, right there on your desk, and that means you accept. It’s a real moment for me,” she added and dug out a handkerchief. “I love you, Dallas.”

"Oh jeez. If you try to kiss me, I’ll deck you.”

And Roarke, being Roarke:
(Eve) "How about if I just call you the Civilian Roarke? You know, like a title.”

"Perhaps if you punched it up just a bit. As in the Awesome and All-Powerful Civilian Roarke. Has a ring.”

And finally, when Eve FINALLY gets her woman: "Now I’m going to give you your civil right to remain silent.” So saying Eve punched her full in the face and knocked her cold.

In short, this book is awesome and if you haven't read it, you should do so immediately. After you read the first 13 of them, of course.

are the best, and the person narrating is fantastic

Nora Roberts could never let me down, JD Robb books, are the best, and the person narrating is fantastic, I love how she can do Roarkes Irish tone and insert it into the story, along with the versions from the other Characters. I highly recommend these books, I have taken them everywhere, they have helped me through some serious hospital stays, and long recuperation times at home. I love knowing that I can have these books in paperback, on my kindle, and on my Audible Ipod. Just started Purity In Death, and am very curious as to what it is.

A fun read!
By L. Quido
I buy each J.D. Robb paperback as soon as it comes out and find the futuristic stories about Eve Dallas, Robb's tough female cop to be truly engaging.
The villain of this tale is a woman Eve has faced before, and she is identified quickly, but is not so easy to catch! I really enjoyed the final confrontation between Julianna and Eve,
loved meeting Peabody's warm hearted parents, and found the bit about Eve visiting the wide open spaces of Texas very funny! A really terrific subplot involves Eve giving Peabody her own case, and teaching and delegating in a way that gives Peabody just the right amount of independence. Eve Dallas, repeating the pattern taught by her own mentor....
Not enough Mavis or Nadine in the novel, and Robb backs off of the Charles/Laura relationship, and a little bit off McNab/Peabody that were introduced in prior books. I think the books need more of their support.
This book completes the first year cycle of Eve's marriage to Roarke, as they celebrate their anniversary, and we can hope that Robb will not grow tired of her feisty lieutenant before their second anniversary.
Definitely worth buying!
