It might not have occurred to anyone to clamor for longtime CBS reporter Schieffer's memoir, but now that it's in print, it makes for a highly engaging read. He's seen it all and has much wisdom about journalism and governance to impart. The book spans virtually every important domestic story of the past 40-odd years; among his captivating subjects are the 1962 integration of the University of Alabama, JFK's assassination, Vietnam, Nixon-era peace protests and Watergate. The book's emphasis changes subtly from events to personalities when Schieffer takes over Face the Nation. As the subtitle suggests, Schieffer wisely forgoes rehashing familiar tales like Watergate or the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal in favor of revealing the background action that went unreported at the time. He structures the book as a collection of anecdotes, and, unsurprisingly for such a seasoned pro, Schieffer has a sharp eye for intriguing details and an instinct for maintaining the proper focus on his subjects rather than on himself. When he does get personal, he admirably questions his occasional missteps in balancing family and career. The telling is so unfussy, modest and straightforward that it rarely prompts speculation about the juicy bits that he couldn't write in a book. A Good Review of Past Decades to the Present

Newsman Bob Schieffer takes the reader for a review of his very interesting life as a journalist from the period of the Kennedy assassination through the 9-11 tragedy. Much of the book is political history of past presidents and what took place during their administrations. Whether you lived through this entire period of time or not I think you will find this book to be engaging reading. Schieffer brings you behind the scenes and discusses the personality traits of various persons we have come to be familiar with over the years involving the television media. The book is slightly over 400 pages long, but it makes for easy reading even for those who are not especially interested in American politics from the newscasters point of view.

This is the best of the "oh yeah I remember that" books

This is a terrific book. It is not an important book, but it is full of terrific "oh yeah's" for anyone over 40 years old. This is because Schieffer's memoirs will jog your memory.
Oh yeah, I remember when President Ford dumped his VP, Rockefeller, and put Bob Dole on the ticket. Oh yeah, I remember when Ford pardoned Nixon. Oh yeah, I remember when Tower's nomination to the Cabinet got derailed, a young congressman... what was his name? Oh yeah, it was Dick Cheney who eventually became Secretary of Defense.
Much of Schiffer's career is the result of good and bad timing. And his book deals with this in a direct and self effacing way. Dan Rather was ahead of him at the White House, on the weekend news. Walter Chronkite and Leslie Stahl preceeded him in the "Face the Nation" slot. He is candid about his first, incorrect reaction to the Watergate breakin reports. His stories about the competitiveness of tv reporters and anchors have a refreshing honesty to them.
But this is no kiss and tell book. When he relates a story about another reporter with a drinking problem, he does not disclose the name, or circumstances. He has the grace and dignity to leave out details that would have us all guessing who it might be. Schiffer is not a gossip, and I applaud him for that.
The timing of the publication of this book could have been better. It was published in hard cover just the the US and the UK were preparing for war with Iraq. But, I suspect that Schiffer will take it in stride. Perhaps, the soft cover will come out at a better time.
Schiffer's book is easy and delightful reading for anyone who has followed the last 25 or 30 years of national news. It won't change your life or the way you see things. It won't give you great original insight into the issues of these days. It will however provide hours of pure enjoyment as you read it. I highly recommend This Just In.

Reassuring and engaging, just like the author

From the first page to the last, I could hear the warm, Texas cadence of Bob Schieffer's voice. While I have lived through most of the history, much of what he said was new to me. I found the history of White House politics and the press very enlightening. And his stint as a reporter in Viet Nam, gave me a clearer picture of just what the young men of my generation had to deal with.
Bob Schieffer demonstrates in the book that reporters are just as vulnerable to the foibles of life as we are. While his career was most prominent in his life, the needs of his family, in the end won out.
He takes us into the broadcast booth with him where we find people who worked for four days in 9/11, producers who sat under his desk feeding him page after page of the Starr report and where on election night 2000, the networks themselves set the stage for the most bizarre night ever on TV.
We are with him in Dallas, Viet Nam and on the courthouse steps of a sleepy 1960 Fort Worth. Throughout the entire book Schieffer, in his modest, warm and humorous way takes us on a forty year journey through an America that has reinvented itself over and over, only to come full circle on a viewing platform at Ground Zero.
