Great, cozy story
By SA
This is such a "cozy" book. It is a fictional story about Beatrix Potter after she bought her farm. There are a number of mysteries and we get to see/hear from different animals (both Beatrix Potter's pets and other people's). Really a nice gentle read that leaves you feeling happy. Great for bedtime reading!

The Tale of Hill Top Farm
By Kurt S. Ulrich
The Tale of Hill Top Farm is a wonderful book. I've read it twice and will reread it because it is like a delicious casserole on a wintery day __ real comfort food for the mind. I think that Susan Wittig Albert's books should appear on audio tape, or better still, video tape for children because she writes so grammatically and with a wonderful sense of style and vocabulary. Her work would be a great teacher of language skills. She uses her animals for life lessons, especially when she attaches the lessons to those of the inhabitants of the Sawreys. The description of the villages and of the architecture and the foods make me long for life in the early 1900s. In addition to all of the above good things, Albert does a splendid job of blending the facts with fiction of Beatrix Potter's life. Because of this book, I've bought all the rest in the series plus a good number of others about Beatrix Potter and the Lake District.

James has made a science of trying to find out: what turns women on, and why? For example, there is sweet, pretty, vivacious Victoria, who he's pined after for years and finally tricked into loving him. He doesn't understand why she would be with him, a bit of a bore with an embarrassingly stalled career, when she can be with his best friend, Stefan. Stefan is clearly the superior mate.

Anyone who knows the first thing about natural selection could see that Stefan and Victoria belong together. So being it's only a matter of time before they realize it themselves. James decides it's only fair to help them along.

Extremely thoughtful and funny book.
By B. Aaron
I bought this book on a whim at a local bookstore, and i must say, I am glad that sometimes i judge a book by it's cover. A pair of men's briefs, a bra, and some swimming trunks adorn a clothsline with the caption "Only the Sexy Survive." Most people think of the word sexy as some catchall phrase to be applied to physically attractive men and women, but this book delves deeper into the notion of the word sexy. The main character tries to foster a relationship with his girlfriend and his good friend from back home, because he thinks his girlfriend deserves someone with all the right characteristics of sexy. Through his oftentimes crazy attempts at rationalizing his attempt to connect his girlfriend with his friend, the novel educates as well as makes you laugh (quite often i found myself doubled over in laughter)as he discovers that sexy is in the eye of the beholder. A truly first-rate romantic comedy novel, I reccomend it to all people who enjoy well written books with the proper doses of wit, humor, bittersweet moments, and most of all, love.

Moving and funny
By Manofgoodtaste
This book ranges from hilarious physcial comedy - climbing down drain pipes, hiding in cupboards, to very insighful and moving scenes. I think it's realy about trying to overcome a sense of not being good enough to be loved. The journey that James takes in the novel is gripping on an emotional level, and I could not put the book down. If you've ever had doubts about how loveable you are this is for you. Read with a tissue in your hands - for the laughter and the tears.

Stalkers and Shooters: A History of Snipers, by Kevin Dockery

The first comprehensive oral history on the subject takes you into the world of the sniper. Fully illustrated with photos.

Since the Revolutionary War, long-range riflemen have held a place of reverence and awe in the public's imagination. Their stories are the stuff of legend. And their history is still being written-in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, and in civilian law enforcement. Here are their stories, their traditions, their techniques, and their tools.

Most importantly, readers will learn about sniping from the experts themselves: military snipers from all branches of the service, as well as civilian police and SWAT snipers. Capturing the suspense and action of the hunt, the words of these men will draw readers into the close-knit world of one of the most lethal weapons the world has ever seen.

Dockery misses the target with this one.
By T. Scales
Dockery, the author of a number of books on military subjects, phoned this one in. "Stalkers and Shooters" begins with several chapters that present a brief history of sniping. Readers of other books on sniping will recognize a number of the anecdotes Dockery uses. The discussion of current sniping focuses mainly on American snipers.

Dockery includes sections of commentary from experienced police and military snipers. This is the portion of this work readers are likely to find most interesting. Unfortunately, the quality of this commentary is hit-or-miss. The better sections are informative and well-composed. Some of the others meander and could have used better editing, notably one in which the contributing sniper rambles on in a know-it-all way about, among other things, politics, journalism and grand strategy in Iraq. It doesn't fit in a book about sniping and some of the soldier's clear factual errors go uncorrected by the author.

Photographs of soldiers holding sniping rifles dot the pages. Many of the photos were taken in Iraq. They are of good quality, but not all are closely related to the nearby text.

There are more interesting and better-organized books on sniping available. Steer clear of this one.

Stalkers and Shooters
By Sam Adams
The book is slightly mis-titled. Early chapters are more about firearms-development and include fairly detailed descriptions of some battles in which a purposeful long-range rifle shot was effective in killing an enemy. It is a good book although a little uneven, but certainly worth the time. It is not, however, of the same format and detail as Martin Pegler's Out of Nowhere: A history of the Military Sniper. So the title may mislead some readers who then feel the book doesn't fulfill its apparent promise.

The text was obviously run through a spell checker but some mistakes got through, allowing a plural when the word should be singular, or not catching an error when a correctly spelled but syntactically incorrect word occurred through mistyping (or typesetting). There were also a few odd uses of the semi-colon and various other stylistic blunders. On the other hand, the author is clearly trying to be accurate and informative, and he makes satisfying distinctions that some authors would glide over.

I would have liked to see footnotes. There were many instances when, some fact being mentioned in the text, I wondered where the author learned it.

The book ends with some very interesting chapters (the best in the book) written by actual police and military snipers; and in these pages, as well as earlier in the book, the question arises of how the term 'sniper' should be used in our language. As used in the military and law enforcement, the term is a job title, so the methods used, skills needed, and the duties routinely assigned to those with the title -- mission planning, land navigation, camouflage, stalking (getting into position), concealment, reconnaissance, surveillance, reporting intel, understanding ballistics and optics, being a marksman, having a partner who is a spotter (observer), shooting only under legally sanctioned conditions -- have within these communities come to be seen as unavoidably included within the full meaning of the term. Outside of those communities, or those who look to them for language usage, a sniper is someone who, from concealment or a long distance (which is effectively concealment even if the sniper's position itself is not concealed), uses a rifle to purposefully shoot, with the intent to kill, a specific, targeted individual. It is not a job title. It refers to a particular type of shooter and manner of killing. Oswald was then a sniper, as was Charles Whitman (chapter 20 is an account of Whitman's shooting spree from the bell tower), when under strict law enforcement or military usage they were not.

Not exactly what I expected
By ubird
The author spends a lot of time discussing longbows, crossbows etc. which technically could have been used by "snipers" however the term is most frequently associated with firearms. There are many photographs of modern sniper rifles etc. but not an overabundance of details.

In his latest thriller, Higgins ( The Eagle Has Landed ) returns to familiar territory with nothing very new to offer. As D-day approaches in Europe, the Allied command learns of a German staff conference to be held in Brittany at the Chateau de Voincourt, where the Nazis will discuss their Atlantic Wall defense strategy. Foreknowledge of these plans could mean the difference between success and failure for the Allied invasion, and as luck would have it, the chateau happens to be the home of an undercover French Resistance agent, beautiful Anne-Marie Trevaunce, so there is every chance that the good guys will succeed in stealing them. When Anne-Marie is incapacitated, luck comes to the fore once again: she just happens to have an identical twin sister living in England who is persuaded to take her place. Fortuitous turns are the norm in this improbable story, as cardboard heroes pull off miraculous rescues, double agents lurk everywhere and villains in uniform serve on both sides of the conflict. The author's reputation for entertaining thrillers will not be enhanced by this effort.

A few too many twists but a solid thriller
By J. Carroll
Higgins has pretty much mastered this genre and has been known to "phone a few in, but COLD HARBOUR does a nice job within the confines of Higgins' rather straight forward style. Playing around with the typical conventions of cross channel warfare, identical twins(never a good idea), and a foray into LeCarre territory, a nice thriller emerges. The story does have its flaws with a rather obvious villain and a few too many twists to hold onto the realism that Higgins generally strives for but overall it works its way to its inevitable conclusion effectively. Other than the ridiculous cover on this paperback, as astutuely mentioned by another reviewer-a U-Boat which has nothing to do with this tales of an E-Boat and espionage, this one's a rather nice page turner and not bad for a quick thriller to fill in on the plane trip or at the beach.

Much better than Goddess by Mistake!
By Lyn
Carolina Francesca Santoro is a 43-year-old Italian-American woman who lives in Tulsa Oklahoma and owns a bakery called Pani Del Goddess. After Lina realizes that her business is in major debt and she might have to declare bankruptcy, she decides that she needs to expand her menu to make more money for her business. After looking through half a dozen old Italian cookbooks from a used book store, Lina opens a cookbook entitled The Italian Goddess Cookbook and finds a recipe for Italian pizza. The recipe involves chanting to the Goddess of the Harvest, Demeter. (One problem I had was that the author didn't use Demeter's and Persephone's Italian names, Ceres and Proserpine, but that's not really a big deal). By saying this chant and asking for help with her bakery, Lina got Demeter's attention, and the Goddess decides to switch Lina and Persephone. The dead souls of the Underworld are calling to Demeter because they want the comfort of a goddess, and Demeter believes that her daughter Persephone, Goddess of Spring, could light the darkness in the Underworld. However, Persephone is young and immature, and Demeter decides to send her to the mortal's world to experience life there, and manage Lina's bakery. In the meantime, Lina will switch places with Persephone to return Demeter's favor, and will visit the Underworld as the Goddess of Spring for six months.

Lina and Hades soon find that they are falling in love, but Lina's conscience can't rest because she promised Demeter that she won't let anyone know that she isn't really Persephone, but she longs to tell Hades. She is also worried that Hades only loves her for her body, which is really Persephone's. The other problem is that Lina has to leave Hades and the Underworld forever in 6 months.

While I liked P.C. Cast's first book, Goddess by Mistake, it seemed a little long-winded and dull at points. After reading this book, I see that Cast has polished her writing skills a lot since then. Goddess of Spring flows MUCH better, and I couldn't put it down!

I also think that Cast fares very well in writing about classical mythology. I loved her descriptions of the Gods and Goddesses, and the Underworld. She paints beautiful, vivid pictures of Hades' Palace, the Elysian Fields, and the dark Tartarus.

I loved how much mythology was woven into this book. The myth of Eurydice and Orpheus was incorporated very well into the story, as was the story of Dido and Aeneas. Cerberus, the dread steeds of Hades, and Charon were also mentioned, as well as the River of Styx, and the River of Forgetfulness, Lethe, which allows one's soul to be reborn in a mortal's body.

I also liked how the reader was able to get to know the real Persephone a bit, and got to see how well she fared in the modern, mortal world.

The romance in this book was much better than Goddess by Mistake, because it wasn't just about lust; it was about soul mates and how little one's outer appearance matters. It was so sweet and actually almost made me cry at one point.

The ending was also done very well, in my opinion. Very interesting, and it was actually how I thought it would end.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes romance or mythology!

Wonderful Adult Fairy Tale
By Elaine C McTyer
The Goddess Demeter feels that Persephone is to immature to handle the problems in the realm of the Dead.

Carolina Santoro needs help with her bakery. She finds an old book of receipes dedicated to the Goddess Demeter. Following a receipe she invokes Demeter.

Demeter suggests that she change bodies with Persephone so the the Goddess of Spring can save her bakery and she who is more mature, can fix the problems in Hades realm.

This is a wonderful adventure full of magic, humor, and romance. The playful mix of myth and reality is stunning. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more.

Cast's best Goddess book so far
By Moria Vulcanus
Maybe if I hadn't already read Cast's previous Goddess books I might have rated this higher. It definitely is the best of the three considering the quality of her writing, the plot, and the setting. The book doesn't get going until Lina changes places with Persephone, but at that point the simple story draws you in and moves quickly. Before that though, unfortunately, the writing is frequently awkward and tedious to slog through. It's as if Cast wasn't interested in that part of the story herself.

This story follows the same outline of events and includes basically the same characters as Cast's previous two Goddess books with only a change of settings and names. There's the ritual, the surprisingly easy changing of worlds and bodies with very little homesickness by the main character. There's the guy she instantly finds true love with, the woman she instantly makes best friends with and who is also her servant. There are the many scenes where she explores her new clothes, her new bathroom. She has fabulous sex. It's all the same as before - just done a little better. This may be partly partly why I seem less impressed by the book than other reviewers here. I hope Cast has worn the formula out by now and will try something new in the future. Also, please, stop with the endless bad puns. One thing new this time is a particularly creepy scene where Lina is bathing while Hades is off in the bushes watching and pleasuring himself. That's not romantic and it could have been left out.

I also can not understand why Cast made such a point of making Lina an Italian who owns an Italian bakery, uses Italian curses, and who finds an old Italian cookbook with the ritual that gets everything going. Why do this if the Gods and myths used for the story were all Greek? Why not just make Lina Greek? Why have an Italian cookbook with an invocation to Demeter instead of Ceres? Probably a lot of readers won't care about this but for me, it was incredibly distracting and sloppy. All these negatives do take a toll on an otherwise fun, quick read and leaving a slightly bad aftertaste, which is why I rate the book as I did.

I cannot believe what a difference this book has made in my life. i want to believe it, but...
By David's Mom
...i've had some issues with it personally. this theory was introduced to me by a health care provider, and my profile as a blood type a seemed to fit me well. during a recent pregnancy, i was plagued with terrible allergies, and my options were limited in terms of medications. i clung to this book and followed it as best i could. for the first few days my allergies improved, so i tried following it to a tee. suddenly, the allergies came back, and i knew that i was eating something that was making them worse. i gave up and returned to a regular diet. after my pregnancy i was tested for allergies, and in addition to my environmental allergies, i am allergic to soy and peanuts, two of the foods that were "highly beneficial" to me. in addition, i had sensitivities to a plethora of other foods on my "blood type a" food list. i may be unique in experiencing this, so i don't want to throw anyone off if this works for you, i just want to let you know about my experience. good luck to you!

Woodstock was over. The Beatles had just broken up. Sesame Street was new. And people in Cambridge, Massachusetts were getting in touch with their feelings. It was 1970, the year Vanessa Brick was picked as a Super Duper Speller for the Cambridge Harmony School. In this novel from a brilliant new voice in fiction, a now-grown Vanessa looks back on a time that was less innocent than it seemed…

I remember how it was to be eight. I remember the playground rhymes, the fierce cliques, and the girls we called “The Fu**ers.” That year was the year my mother adopted an unprecedented number of cats and dated an ardent nudist. I finally found out the truth about my father and his anti-vegetarianism; and my only close friend became a person I didn’t know. It was also the first time I was conscious of myself as a person with secrets; as a freethinking human being with something to say. Something not everyone wanted to hear.

The year I was eight I became the most notorious child in the history of the Cambridge Harmony PTA…

From Publishers Weekly
This funny, touching first novel captures the domestic anarchy of the 1970s through the eyes of brainy eight-year-old Vanessa Brick, a student at an alternative Cambridge, Mass., elementary school. Vanessa's well-meaning but frazzled mother, Debbie, is divorced and raising Vanessa with the help of divorced neighbor Katty, who decides she's a lesbian, and boy-crazy teenage babysitter Landis. The free-loving, ashram-going grownups in this book insist on treating their children like adults, though no one seems to have a very clear idea what adulthood means anymore. Vanessa's best friend, Anu Bhaduri, is her true support, but Anu becomes traumatized and withdrawn after she's mooned by a flasher terrorizing the neighborhood, leaving Vanessa to muddle through playground politics on her own. Vanessa is chosen to write a play incorporating classroom spelling words (which include "syphilis" and "gestate"), but when she names all her characters with euphemisms for buttocks and uses the word "receptacle" to discuss the proper function of the anus ("You put things in a Receptacle... but things come out of your bottom.... It is not a good idea to put anything in"), she sparks a schoolwide controversy over just what kind of limits and examples adults should be setting for children. With dead-on dialogue, Jenkins deftly satirizes the narcissism of the 1970s while maintaining compassion for those caught in the maelstrom-especially the likably vulnerable Debbie and the winning Vanessa. A charming debut that will have readers of Vanessa's generation chuckling with recognition.

intrepid eight-year-old explores newfound consciousness
By Bruce J. Wasser
It is no easy feat the describe and define the onset of self-awareness in a child's life; the task is more difficult when the child's consciousness forms itself in the heady, self-aborbed early 1970s. Emily Jenkins' winning debut novel, "Mister Posterior and the Genuis Child" creates a memorable eight-year-old protagonist in Vanessa, who most endure growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a home where her single mother,Debbie, tries to navigate the currents of consciousness-raising, alternative education and sexual satisfaction. Vanessa's voice rings true; her complex personality invites empathy and her myriad school and home experiences delight, horrify and illuminate. "Posterior" features an impressive, fast-paced narrative which enhances Jenkins' sharply-etched characters and invests their foibles with sympathy instead of disdain.
Vanessa is a sensitive, precocious child who is acutely aware of her marginal status at a progressive, counter-culture, purportedly child-centered school. Chafing at her suddenly obvious differences, Vanessa alternates between rejecting her distinctiveness and embracing it. Upon discovering her status as a scholarship student -- a poor kid from a poor, single-parent family -- and ingesting a classmate's comments on her being different, Vanessa remarks that "it felt like confirmation of something I had known all along."
Her mother, whom Vanessa resolutely calls Debbie, struggles with her own baggage. "The only child of two blisteringly spotless people," Debbie rebels through diet and her own steadfast belief in her daughter's right to be. Debbie repudiates her parents' "veneer of shiny white happiness" as she flails away at her solitary life. Dating a seemingly endless array of losers, Debbie unwittingly increases the velocity of Vanessa's maturation by hiring a babysitter, whose adolescent fixation on boys augments a budding curiosity in Vanessa.
This desire to know, to question leads Vanessa into conflict with quasi-permissive (but secretly manipulative and lazy) teachers whose premise of allowing children to prgress at their own pace runs afoul of their unwillingness to instruct and guide. A member of the "Super Spellers," Vanessa includes explicit sexual vocabulary in a hilarious script she was voluntarily coerced into writing. The episode reveals not only her vivid imagination but also the utter blindness of school authorities to authentic childhood creativity.
Vanessa adamantly refuses to perceive herself as a victim, and this core resiliency carries her through the central crisis of the novel: an exhibitionist whose bare bottom alarms her mother, babysitter and neighborhood but merely amuses her. Vanessa's unflinching belief in herself -- a self defined by imagination, play and discovery -- serves as a model of behavior, not just for children, but for adults as well.
"Mister Posterior and the Genuis Child" is vibrant and engaging. Its author, Emily Jenkins, invests her protagonist with an informed childhood sensibility, one open to hurt and fear, but even more receptive to the wondrous, messy possibilities of life.

The world keeps turning -
By A Customer
The world keeps turning through the eyes of this 8 year old whose vision is both quirky and intensely aware. The humor catches us by surprise, the moments of truth are sometimes painful, and there's an undercurrent of willingness to live life fully that buoys up all of it. Emily Jenkins has brought to life characters who are oddly familiar yet have plenty to teach us, naming them with Dickensian accuracy and bouncing them off each other in ways that remind us sometimes of a circus and sometimes of a ballet. Her refined ability to capture the moments that matter and weave them into a story with meaning mark a first novel that will keep you reading.

Steller First Novel!
By puce
I was lucky enough to take a class taught by Emily Jenkins, while at college. Back then, I thought she was a great teacher and talented writer and now a few years later, I see that I was absolutely not mistaken. This book was funny, clever, so creative and poignant, I can't imagine anyone not finding it completely engrossing and worth finishing in a day and a half(as I did.) I am definitely very much looking forward to Emily's next novel!!

Thought the character was into eating too much, really didn't get the recipes, just the history, not too much of a plot.

From Publishers Weekly
Barr lands another successful entry in the solid series featuring Anna Pigeon, the down-to-earth National Park Service ranger last seen in A Superior Death (1994). The daily problems at Mesa Verde National Park are mostly straightforward, although Ted Greeley, the contractor installing a water line, tends to irritate folks (especially the park archeologist, incensed about Greeley's indifference to buried Anasazi artifacts), and Patsy Silva, a park secretary, is getting "weird" messages from her ex-husband, who has joined Greeley's crew. The summer takes on darker hues when ranger Stacy Meyers panics so badly during the evacuation of an asthmatic child that he is useless. Soon afterward, Stacy vanishes; his corpse is found tucked away in the park in a scene of death that is "pathologically neat." Anna is assigned to assist Frederick Stanton, the deceptively "vague and bumbling" FBI agent sent in on the case; as they match wits with an unknown adversary, their working relationship takes on warmer tones than at their last meeting. Despite being troubled by memories of her late husband and her increasing fondness for alcohol, Anna (usually) displays that common sense and appreciation for nature that makes her such good company. Literary Guild and Mystery Guild selections.

From Booklist
Anna Pigeon, a park ranger at Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park, is a woman on the mend. She's a widow, she's battling alcohol dependence, and she's recently changed jobs. Despite her pain, she reaches tentatively toward Stacey Meyer, a ranger trainee who has also endured his share of middle-aged pain. Shortly after he mishandles a crisis that results in a child's death, Stacey himself is found dead. Suicide? Anna thinks it unlikely. Murder? Possibly, but who and why? When the husband of another park employee is killed in a suspicious car wreck, the case takes on broader implications. Through it all, Anna struggles with her middle-aged angst, her alcoholism, and her loneliness, drawing support from long-distance calls to her sister, who serves the functions of both a Dr. Watson and a voice on the other end of a crisis hot-line. This third entry in the acclaimed series is as much a personal journey of self-discovery as it is a mystery. Anna is a flawed but admirable woman struggling daily to determine her values and her value in a harsh world. An outstanding novel. Wes Lukowsky

Beware a breath of fresh air...
By Victoria Tarrani
Anna Pigeon, is now at home in Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park, but murder also invades the Anasazi ruins. Why do some of the tourists die while viewing the caves? This becomes a significant question when a child dies; the previous deaths were attributed to natural circumstance. The value of medical training for a park ranger is detailed in giving aid to these unfortunate visitors.
Death continues to visit this land where the question of "what happened to the Anasazi" is as ingrained to archaeologists in the real world as it is in the world of Anna Pigeon. It is clear that Nevada Barr has studied the ancient Native American history and searched for answers to this question. Is not a journey into history, but an adventure into murder and money.
Nevada Barr excels in creating believable characters, situations and solutions.

Smells can make you fall in love. Parasites can make you crazy. Faith is in the genes. There are fires burning inside your cells and lies flaming in your thymus...Intensely personal and brilliantly scientific, Faith, Madness, and Spontaneous Human Combustion reveals the startling ways in which science--especially immunology and pathology-shapes our destinies, and how something as intimate as our own identities can be connected to the intricate workings of the machines known as our bodies.

From Publishers Weekly
Combining science and personal anecdote is no easy task, and Callahan's ambitious look at the relationship between immunology and selfhood falls somewhat short of the mark. Callahan a poet, essayist and Colorado State University professor of immunology aims to show how the immune system literally and metaphorically forms the basis for our identity. Weaving together bits of memoir, case studies of unusual incidents like human combustion and virally transmitted insanity, and basic explanations of immunology, Callahan shows how the immune system's main function to distinguish between self and nonself, to defend the body from invaders not only determines the boundaries of the basic biological "self" but can metaphorically be applied to our psychological selves as well. Discussing the concept of immunological memory, for instance, Callahan writes, "Enveloped viruses... are so named because they carry with them an `envelope' of lipids and proteins taken from the host cell.... Each time we give the flu to our wives or our cold sores to our husbands, we also give them a little bit of ourselves." These metaphors unfortunately tend to be simplistic and pat. Those reading the book for straightforward scientific information or Oliver Sacks-style medical curiosities will probably be frustrated by the impressionistic prose and meandering narrative. While there are fascinating facts here, as well as some genuinely engaging recollections from Callahan's life, these are interspersed with self-indulgent whimsy. An unusual attempt at genre crossing, the book would have been better off as a traditional memoir without the popular science conceit. (Jan.)Forecast: Callahan is being marketed as a successor to Oliver Sacks, but he lacks Sacks's gift for engaging narrative. Not a comfortable fit in any category and unlikely to be a crossover hit.

From Booklist
Each of the dozen essays in this far-ranging collection could be expanded into a book. With one degree in protein chemistry and another in pathology, Callahan is an imaginative scientist, remarkably able to see connections between seemingly unrelated things and events. Uniting the intriguing life journey he traces is the theme encapsulated in his early observation, "We are individuals because we have immune systems." Each immune system works slightly differently from any other, which makes for individual uniqueness in body and emotions. Callahan explores historical and recent variations among individuals and cultures in life, disease, and death. "Watermarks" investigates the uses of water in humans and animals, for instance, while "The Flame Within" is virtually a detective story about the best-documented instance of human spontaneous combustion, which occurred in Florida in 1951. Analogizing to striking effect, Callahan conveys both science and sympathy. It is hard to think of a type of reader who wouldn't be intrigued by this fascinating book. William Beatty

Stimulating, educational & almost mystical, EXCELLENT
By Amazon Customer
Callahan is that genre of author I like to describe as "scientifically based mystic." Scientist in that, true to his craft, he primarily uses the scientific method to probe the answers to life in the biological sense. Mystic in that he recognizes that science can provide many wonderful answers and statistics, but seldom the "meta" answers man has yearned for since we can remember.

"Who am I?" and "What is my place in the universe?" are questions seldom answered satisfactorily by science, and more comfortably by religion. Using his considerable experience and knowledge in the science of immunology, Callahan tackles these questions in a much different way then most scientists would, yet without an appeal to religiosity. Always with a healthy respect for the unknown, unseen and unknowable, Callahan deftly explores the hidden relationships between ourselvs, our parents and every other living thing comprising life.

He'll make you think in ways you possibly haven't thought before, and even tug at your heartstrings while recounting intensly personal stories experienced by us all. Highly recommended.

The Lies we tell
By Ron Iverson
I measure a book by my own reaction to it. When I have finished the last page, if the thoughts within the work compel me to look at the world around me--or within me--in a new and different way, it is a good book. Rare are authors who are capable of opening new doors upon this experience we call life. Gerry Callahan is one such author.
Using the immune system as a basis for analogy, he describes the fascinating tasks the human body's immune system must perform in distinguishing "self" from "not self" in order to keep our bodies from being consumed by the microbial world. But this is not a dry text about immunology. It is a personal and philosophical story about the beauty and elegance of life. It is a story about lymphocytes and mitochondria, but it is far more a story about Gerry L. Callahan, his perceptions, his joy, his pain, his truths, and his lies. Equally, it is about all members of the human species.
"It isn't nature that abhors a vacuum, it's humans. We humans don't believe in the limits of human knowledge, even temporary limits. We don't accept the spaces between what we know and what is. So we lie. We lie to fill in those spaces and smooth the fabric of reality. Otherwise this universe, this life, would be unmanageable, overpowering, and terrifying. We lie to make it manageable-all of us."
This book is about Gerry L Callahan filling in the spaces to smooth the fabric of reality. For me, it opened another door.

Somebody finally found a balance
By Red Hood
I call "Faith, Madness..." scientific poetry. It is a work of humanity, written in earnest, baring its flaws and uncertainty to reveal a possible truth about WHY and maybe more importantly HOW we are what we are. Callahan weaves snippets of insightful, passionate prose with personal ancedote to illustrate his theory that our immune systems help to define our individuality. I have been touched by this book. Not only does it speak to my thirst for scientific understanding but it lightly stroked my sense of spirituality. Science books like this don't come around very often.
