Gabriel & Merry.....

I enjoy most of Ms Potter's books, although this one I didn't care for as much as I'd hoped to.

Revenge really brings a person down, makes them miserable. I was glad Gabriel & Merry met, even under their circumstances, but there hearts were heavy for so long.

Romantic Tale of Double Intrigue That Falls Short of Ingenuity.

This is a tale of double intrigue set in Regency London.

Merry Anders aka Monique Fremont is a celebrated actress who is in London on a secret mission... to take down the powerful and corrupt men known as "The Group" - but mainly targeting the leader of the group Stanhope. Her reasons for a vendetta involve her mother who was once his lover. After impregnating her he attempted to kill her, abandons her and leaves her with no other choice but to pursue prostitution as a means to raise her daughter Merry/ Monique. Merry holds Stanhope, her father, responsible, and sets out to turn him and his men against each other through a plot of seduction.

Gabriel Manning is on a similar mission. When he was ten years old, his father commits suicide after he is framed in a financial plot of ruin. Before he dies, he names "The Group" responsible, and of course, especially Stanhope, and makes his ten year swear to take revenge and clear the family name. Gabriel and his mother are shunned after this scandal and flee to America to live with an uncle... leaving Gabriel to grow cold and alone, obsessed with a revenge plot. He returns to London as a young man to take down Stanhope though a somewhat intricate plot that involves turning the tables on the man in a similar situation that framed his father.

So, of course, the two cross paths and soon sparks fly. I had some serious issues with the novel though, that made it impossible to lose myself in it completely. First of all, Potter lays out everything above right away (so I'm not giving any spoilers away)... so the rest of the novel there's really nothing to learn about the characters. Second of all, I had a hard time with Merry/Monique's method of revenge involving her flirting with/ near seduction of her own father. (Ick.) Third, I found Merry/Monique's side of the story to be weak beyond that. We never find out what exactly the girl planned to do once she succeeded in seducing her father. It was Gabriel that had the trap planned... and she just fell into his plot. But what was her own plot? What was her plan if she hadn't met Gabriel?

There were also some consistency errors with the characters. For example, Gabriel tells Merry/Monique that he is pretending to court Stanhope's daughter (Pamela, who is also the heroine's sister) for show and that she has a lover already. Merry/Monique continues to be jealous about Pamela, as though she were never told their relationship was fake. THEN Pamela tells her (again) and it's like she hadn't already known and she is very surprised. But even still she continues after that to bait Gabriel about how he's pursuing this girl... even though TWICE she's been told it's a fake relationship.

Also, I couldn't stand the lying. The two characters lie to each other constantly. I didn't like the heroine because I couldn't tell when she was being real or fake. Though they were both liars the whole time, she was by far the worst.

On the good side of things, this book has very wonderful side characters. I simply adored the side plot of Danielle and Smythe. Unless I missed it, we never find out what Dani's story is... I was really intrigued by her.

For a better Potter historical - I recommend her Star Series or any of her Westerns.

A tad flat for my taste.

I hedged between three and four stars on this review. I'll explain why later.
Synopsis: Gabriel's father is ruined by a man named Stanhope when Gabriel is a young boy. Merry (or Monique) is a young girl when Stanhope ruins her mother and tries to kill them both--they flee to France where she becomes a celebrated actress with a fake persona of a woman who likes to be "protected" by patrons. (She's really not, and is pretty innocent.)
Fast forward. Gabriel has come into some money and a title and ventures to England from America to seek out revenge on Stanhope. Merry/Monique is on her way from France for the same reason.
Potter had a couple of great secondary characters in Dani, Merry/Monique's maid and Smythe, Gabriel's valet. (I enjoyed the two of them and would really like to see their story in another book.)
But to the main story. I was intrigued enough to finish the book--normally when I start to get a little bored, I drop the book and move on. I skipped through some pages while Merry /Monique and Gabriel were setting up their intrigue and getting Stanhope into their respective traps...I honestly think I skimmed up until page 200 or so before deciding to slow down and read.
That's where I fault the book. Picking up in the last third of the book, I wasn't lost. I could have done without the entire middle of the book, and the story would have been just fine. It seemed the author took a little bit too much time to get her characters together and in play on the book's premise. Once they got there and started admitting to themselves and their attendants how they felt, it made the book a bit smoother. I just wish it hadn't taken so long.
As for the characters--Gabriel was great. I thought he was fairly troubled and rightly so, but no so darned aloof and cold as some heros are. I liked him very much.
Merry/Monique--I'll be honest, she didn't stick in my head as much as some heroines. Maybe she lacked a little bit of a third dimension--she was a tad flat for my taste, but she still was readable and enjoyable. I forgave her shortcomings because she matched up well enough with Gabriel.
Overall, I'm not sure this would be my first pick, but it was good enough for me to look into more books by Ms. Potter.

Potter displays her usual competent style, providing a backdrop of foreboding as the reader waits for the hero to remember who he is, for the English to find out that he is a Scot, and for Kimbra to stay strong. 2.5 stars. Typical Scottish historical. Not different enough to stand out from the rest. Not enough emotional appeal.

STORY BRIEF:
Lachlan is one of the nobles fighting alongside the Scottish King James. They are just over the border in England fighting King Henry's army. Most of the Scots are killed. Lachlan is wounded. After the battle, the reivers (thieving communities living near the border) go through the dead soldiers to take valuables. Kimbra is a widow trying to support her daughter. One of her duties as part of the community is to take valuables from the soldiers. While there, she discovers Lachlan, and she wants to help him. She covers him with leaves to hide him and returns later with a horse to take him to her cottage. She nurses him back to health, they start to fall in love. Lachlan has amnesia and doesn't know who he is. She coaches him on how to speak and what to say so her community will think he is English. The English king wants all Scots killed. When the Charleton (the leader of the local Charleton clan) learns about Lachlan, he insists that Lachlan stay at his residence/compound in a locked room, until more is known about him. Cedric is the Charleton's evil nephew. Cedric causes conflicts throughout the story. He wants to marry Kimbra and get rid of Lachlan.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This was ok as a typical historical romance, but I wasn't pulled in enough emotionally, either by the events or the characters. Throughout the story there was not much of a romantic relationship happening. Most of the time Kimbra and Lachlan were afraid and at risk. They both could be killed if someone learned the truth about what was going on. There was nothing wrong with the story. I just wanted something a little different or that had an interesting effect on me. One event bothered me. Someone discovered Lachlan was a Scot and reported it to the local leader. The author did not explain how this person learned Lachlan was a Scot. It felt like the author couldn't think of anything interesting so she just skipped it and moved on to the next conflict.

Splendid Romance - Sensual

Setting --- Flodden Field, September 1513 --- Lachlan Maclean never wanted to be a soldier. Guilt ridden and blaming himself for his father's death when he refused to kill an enemy, he sought to restore his honor by taking the place of his brother Rory and standing at the side of King James to battle the English. Fighting valiantly and severely wounded Lachlan was cut down, pinned beneath his horse.

As the widow of an English reiver after his untimely death, Kimbra Charleton supported herself and daughter by joining with her husbands thieving family in scavenging the dead of their valuables. Instructed to kill any Scots still breathing, Kimbra hesitated after noting the fine Scots plaid and jeweled brooch of the injured soldier. Assuming him to be a noble and ripe for ransoming, she planned to restore him to health and ransom him for herself and daughter. When after some days he awoke with no memories of who he was Kimbra was disappointed. Though he presented a danger to both her and her daughter should the Charleton discover him to be a Scot, feelings Kimbra had never felt before and her determination to not let him die compelled her to keep him alive.

Little by little, Lachlan's returning memories were of violence and great sorrow, unfortunately, NOT of who he was. It seemed to be an impossible situation, but the passion both felt just might be the medicine that would heal both their broken lives as Lachlan laid claim to Kimbra's heart.

--- This is an absolutely stunning read, rich in historical details, fast-paced and riveting in suspense as both Lachlan and Kimbra skirted danger as the smoldering attraction between sworn enemies ignited. It's an emotional tale that will leave you with a lump in your throat and a tear or two in your eyes. fine early sixteenth century romance

In 1513 guilt-ridden Lachlan Maclean never wanted to become a soldier, but does because he holds himself culpable for the death of his father when he failed to kill an enemy; redemption is what he is willing to die for. He hopes to restore honor lost by replacing his brother at the side of King James in the upcoming battle with the English at Flodden Field. During the skirmish Lachlan fought like a man possessed, but ultimately was wounded and buried underneath his steed.

Widow Kimbra Charleton supports herself and her daughter by scavenging for the values of the war dead along side her late husband's odious family. Her in-laws demand she kill any Scot who remains alive. She finds Lachlan still breathing but wearing a costly plaid and a valuable jeweled brooch so she assumes he is of noble birth. Unable to kill him, Kimbra rationalizes that she will nurture him before ransoming him. However, as he heals, he suffers amnesia, unable to remember his name. Worse she finds that instead of dumping him or informing her in-laws that she houses a Scot so they kill him, she wants her patient like no one ever before not even her late husband.

BELOVED STRANGER, the sequel to the superb BELOVED IMPOSTER, is a fine early sixteenth century romance. The tale stars a beleaguered ethical hero seeking to redeem his honor though amnesia makes him wonder if he has done evil things and a fabulous lioness willing to do anything for her cub except turn in her patient to certain death as she clearly sees he is an honorable soul. The action packed story line moves forward at a fast pace, but it is the lead pairing that drive a fine return to the MacLean clan

Nice summary of the careers of two major WWII generals

I bought this book at an airport bookstore, and really enjoyed it. For those that don't have the time to read full biographies of Patton and Rommell, this is the book for you. If you've already read separate biographies of the two, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book.

Fast food history

No maps. No photos or illustrations of any kind. No footnotes. No bibliography. I was very disappointed in this book. When it came out I eagerly sought it because I am a huge Rommel fan, and always wanted to know more about Patton. As I have read everything on Rommel, I can address that issue best, but I assume the same goes for the Patton "research."

First, there is nothing new in this book. All Showalter did was paraphrase Rommel's own books! And Rommel was a better writer!

Second, as an historian myself, no notes of any kind make a non-fiction book suspect. It makes it worthless as a research source. How much is opinion? With all the German archives now accessible since the Fall of the Berlin Wall, there is wonderful new material that should be the basis for any current books.

I cannot recommend this book. I do recommend readers seek out Rommel's own 2 books, and Patton's as well, for the real insight into these two men. Historians too often think they know more about the people they never met than those people themselves. And I find too many current histories are churned out as need to publish "fast food." Another good Rommel book is Discovering the Rommel Murder by Charles F. Marshal.

The Jasmine Moon Murder (Tea Shop Mystery #5)

I have read nearly all of the "Tea Shop Mysteries" and have yet to find the series "predictable". Each new title offers the skills of Theodosia Browning, sleuth/tea shop owner extrordinary and her staff. In addition to a plot that keeps readers guessing until the end, Ms. Childs also takes the opportunity to imerse us in the ambience of historic downtown Charleston and its various historic churches, as well as other landmarks,festivals, and social life.

I very much enjoyed this book, and am already looking forward to Ms Child's next effort in this series.

Tea-Died and Overdone

Laura Childs has certainly found a niche with her Tea Shop Mystery series. For fans of both mystery and tea alike can find something to enjoy in these fast-paced easy reads. Yet Childs and her amateur sleuth don't seem to be making many improvements as the series continues down its predictable path.

"The Jasmine Moon Murder", the fifth in the series, finds the amateur detective Theodosia Browning dealing with a murder that hits very close to home - the uncle of her boyfriend, Jory Davis. When Jory's uncle collapses at a local fundraising event, Theodosia finds a synringe on the ground nearby and knows that his death was not accidental. And although Theo promises the now familiar detective Burt Tidwell that she will keep her distance from the crime, she can't help but investigate when Jory asks her for help. And just like always, Theodosia's sleuthing winds up with her getting a little too close to the truth and making herself a target for the killer at large.

The Tea Shop Mystery series is a unique series, and it seems a shame that the recipes and information about tea are almost more entertaining than the mystery at hand. Childs will certainly never win any awards for writing, as she refuses to believe that her audience is as intelligent as she believes her own creation to be. Her writing is strewn with repeated descriptions mere pages apart and similes that land as softly as an atom bomb, (not to mention that this particular edition had an awful lot of typos in it). All in all, taking the bad with the good, these mysteries are a pleasant and thirst-inducing escape from reality.

delightful tea and murder mystery.

Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop in the historic downtown district of Charlotte, South Carolina, agrees to cater the "Ghost Crawl" society tour of the Jasmine cemetery sponsored by Charleston's Medical Triad. The host is Dr. Jasper Davis, the uncle of Theodosia's boyfriend Jory. Uncle Jasper and his team developed the Novalaser, a less invasive way of performing angioplasty. All of a sudden Dr. Davis keels over and is dead; Theodosia finds a syringe near the body.

Jory asks his girlfriend to investigate his uncle's death since she has a history of solving homicides. She plunges into the investigation with plenty of enthusiasm and everyone who knows her believe she is on the trail of the killer. When she is out horseback riding, someone tries to shoot her and shortly thereafter somebody throws a rock through her window warning her to stop her inquiries. Theodosia becomes even more determined to find the killer since she doesn't let her fear interfere with keeping her promise to Jory.

The latest Tea Shop Mystery is a delectable and delicious amateur sleuth mystery with mouth watering recipes that are worth the price of the book. The description of tea and the meals that The Indigo Tea Shop serves will make readers salivate. The heroine out does herself in this homicide investigation because she is investigating homicides without empirical evidence. Laura Childs serves up a delightful tea and murder mystery.

Clancy combines three stories in this remarkable narrative. He shows how the U.S. Army recovered from the debacle of Vietnam, how a young officer named Fred Franks was able to return from losing a leg in Cambodia and become an integral part of this resurrection, and how all this prepared Franks to lead one corps of the reborn army to victory over the Iraqi Republican Guard during Operation Desert Storm. Clancy presents this tale in a clear and well-organized manner that frequently allows Franks to tell his own story. The description of the 100 hours of Desert Storm, with all of its excitement, confusion, and unpredictability, is Clancy at his best. The reading by Boyd Gaines and Ken Jenkins is excellent. Gaines reads the narrative in a clear and well-paced voice that is pleasing and engaging. Jenkins reads General Franks's dialog with great feeling and disciplined intensity. Great book. A must for students and researchers.

I have researched the Gulf War for several years and found this book to be one of the best to give an inside look into the corps command level. Clancy and Frank's book shows the campaign through the eyes of the VII Corps commander, which was in charge of the main effort during the Iraqi campaign. It contains facts and details that are unavailable elsewhere (at least not in non military sources). This book, together with Schwartzkopf's "It Doesn't Take a Hero", Atkinson's "Crusade" and Gordon's "The Generals'War", is a must for every Gulf War researcher.

Into the Storm, written by bestselling author Tom Clancy and retired Army general Fred Franks, is the first book of a continuing series of non-fiction military history/memoirs highlighting modern-day commanders and their experiences in war and peace.
Subtitled "On the Ground in Iraq," Into the Storm examines the post-Vietnam War rebuilding of the United States Army from a demoralized mix of draftees and "lifers" to the smaller but professional fighting force that defeated Saddam Hussein's vaunted Iraqi legions in Kuwait during Gulf War I. Clancy and Gen. Franks examine the evolution of the Army's weapons and tactics from the mid-1960s to the 1990s and the change of focus from Cold War confrontation with the Soviet Union to the face-off with new enemies in distant battlefields far from the Central European plains.
The book is also Frank's personal account of his service as an Army officer, starting as a young cavalry lieutenant stationed in the Fulda Gap in the early 1960s, his tour of duty in Southeast Asia -- where Franks lost a leg during the May 1970 invasion of Cambodia -- and his subsequent rise to general's stars and the command of the "heavy" VII Corps which was Desert Storm's armored "fist" during the now-famous 100-Hour ground war.
Along the way, we learn about Fred Franks the man, a bright, intelligent and quiet man who loves his wife and family, yet is determined to stay as a serving officer despite the loss of his leg. He comes across as a gentleman-warrior and genuine hero, yet he seems to be in awe of the young soldiers who fought and died under his command in two wars.
The book's narrative switches from Clancy's third-person analysis to Frank's first-person autobiographical account several times, which gives readers the best of both worlds. And although there is quite a bit of military jargon in the text, the authors explain and define the acronyms and terms for the reader. Also helpful are the many maps and graphics by Laura Alpher and many photographs from the authors' personal collections.

Appealing Mystery

In this installment in the Mrs. Jeffries mystery series, Smythe's friend, Blimpey Groggins asks Inspector Gerald Witherspoon's household staff, to investigate a murder. His friend, Tommy Odell, has been found guilty of killing a woman and is scheduled to hang for the crime in a few weeks, but Blimpey is convinced that Tommy is innocent. The staff agrees to help, but they realize it's going to be difficult to find clues in a case that is considered already solved. To complicate things further, it wasn't Witherspoon's case; it belonged to Inspector Nivens, Witherspoon's nemesis. Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the staff have their work cut out for them if they wish to save an innocent man from hanging.

Emily Brightwell has done it once again. Even after writing over 20 Mrs. Jeffries books, she manages to keep the series from going stale. Having the staff investigate a murder that is considered already solved was a great plot device and worked well. It also ups the animosity between Witherspoon and Nivens and opens up lots of possibilities for plot developments in future books in the series. What makes this series so good is how the characters continue to develop in each book and especially Inspector Witherspoon in this book. Some fans of the series will be disappointed that there's no Luty and Hatchet in this entry, but there is plenty of Ruth Cannonberry in exchange. It was also nice to see more of Blimpey and Brightwell adds a neat twist at the end of the book to make his character even more likable. The mystery is nicely plotted and while I thought I knew who the murderer was, I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong.

Unfortunate distractions

Glad this book was written and I looked forward to reading it once I bought a copy. I have to say, though, that I was surprised that something authored by a journalist with twenty-five years experience could turn out a book so poorly written.

The historical facts seem to be all there, but they are presented with cheesy and sometimes irrelevant anecdotes that distract rather than add to the narrative. One example is the story, (joke), about the San Diego man who was drowned by someone in order to get his apartment. Numerous examples of amateurish writing included referring to one Marine assigned to safeguard the large 5-gallon gas can, (as opposed to the small 5-gallon gas can?), or telling about the two unoccupied rafts that broke away and raced towards shore; that left a curious visual, as unpowered boats could not have raced anywhere. "Drifted" would have been a better term to use, as the motors would not have been running while the rafts were being loaded.

The author did give me an out before I got too far into the book, though, by mentioning that one of the Raiders, Lt. Oscar Peatross, who he considered to be the "premier historian" of the Makin raid, had written what was recognized as the most accurate and thorough account of the Makin raid: "Bless 'Em All : the Raider Marines of World War II." I was lucky enough to find a copy of Peatross' book in my local library system and thought about dropping this one before the other came in. I do like to read multiple accounts of history, though, so decided to read the rest, distractions and all, in the hopes the writing would improve.

As a Marine, I do appreciate the author's dedication to documenting this moment in our history, but do wish he would have had better quality control support in his attempt at it.

Factual histories reveal how messy reality is...

Evans Fordyce Carlson was a loose cannon. The Raider concept was "emerging doctrine" (MilSpeak for "make up stuff as the situation develops"). Carlson's legacy is the modern Marine Corps fire team--a humble honor that Carlson would probably appreciate. As for the official record, "maverick" is an understatement.

George W. Smith begins "Carlson's Raid" with the events of Sunday, December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. The author also gives a brief biography of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, a key player in the Raider story. James Roosevelt, FDR's son and Carlson's battalion executive officer, and of course the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, were the reason that Carlson wound up with one of the two Raider battalions. The Marine Corps was bitterly opposed to forming any "special force" because the official dogma was that every Marine was special. (Note: in 2005 the United States Marine Corps finally recanted this long-held doctrine and established a presence in the Special Operations Command--SOCOM. "Carlson's Raid" was published prior to this event and only time will tell how this radical change will affect the Corps.)

The bulk of the book is about the Makin raid from preparation to aftermath. One chapter is devoted to Carlson's Raiders' Long Patrol and another is devoted to the disbanding of the Raiders. I like bibliographies and indexes because they allow me to go to other sources and quickly find things.

I came to the conclusion that the Makin Raid was a defeat for Headquarters Marine Corps because even after being organized and equipped specifically for raiding and undergoing extensive (for the time) training the raid was all but a disaster. This was an HQMC defeat because it proved that "ordinary Marine line companies" were NOT capable of conducting Makin Island type operations. The Raider companies themselves needed refinement in training and better equipment. Radios and outboard motors were not up to the task of keeping raid elements in touch with the mother ship or each other, and of crashing through the surf line. No wonder Raider units were "squandered" as line infantry on Guadalcanal and then disbanded! The Para-Marines were never used as parachute infantry, either.

I think that "Carlson's Raid" is great history because it shows how fouled up war fighting can be. Smith leaves me with more questions than answers, which is a good thing. There are gaps in the record on the Makin Island operation. George W. Smith put a lot of information into "Carlson's Raid" because military operations do not happen in a clinical, isolated setting. FDR's "interference" in "military operations" and the Hollywood connection (the movie "Gung Ho!") all cloud the issue of success and failure. In military operations the difference between defeat and victory is often merely a matter of opinion.

Advent of the commando concept in the U.S.M.C.

In the first half of World War II, things looked very bleak for the allies. The German and Japanese military were presumed to be invincible, by the more pessimistic observers. Germany had over-run Europe and North Africa, and almost defeated the Soviet Union in October of 1941. The Japanese had over-run much of East Asia and half of the Pacific Ocean. The Axis Powers were planning to link-up in India, and to most of the world, it seemed that this was innevitable.

In Britain, a nation crippled by its losses in the disaster at Dunkirk, Winston Churchill refused to wait for the prospective German invasion of his nation. Believing that any manner of offensive action would be better than doing nothing at all, Churchill authorized the formation of elite raiding units, the Commandos. This was the birth of modern military special-operations.

The Commando-concept found much resistance from the typically closed-minds of intellectually-mediocre, inner-circle, military careerists who always seem to dominate armed-forces bureaucracy. Unfortunately, the U.S. Marine Corps had its share of such uninspired conformists. However, not everyone was opposed to such "radical" ideas.

Franklin Roosevelt, inspired by the commando successes reported by Churchill, gave his endorsement to the formation of American commando units. Roosevelt's son James was a Marine Corps officer, and was among the first eager advocates. James Roosevelt would serve as XO under his friend, Evans Carlson, in the 2nd Raider Battalion. This should not have been such a contentious issue for the U.S.M.C. After all, the Marines historically had always been a raiding-force, by their vary nature as ship-borne infantry. As the Army formed the Ranger units, the U.S.M.C. formed its own commando group, the Raiders.

Here is the story of Evans Carlson, James Roosevelt, the Marine Corps Raiders, and the raid on Makin Island.

Conducted as a diversion for the larger Marine landings on Guadalcanal, the Makin raid was an operation of questionable value in some respects. The raid did result in the capture of useful intelligence documents, and valuable experience was gained. Sadly, as is common in such daring under-takings, things did not go as well in the conduct and extraction phases as theycould have. There are always unforseen hazards, despite how thorough the planning and the rehearsals may be. The Makin raid almost became an absolute disaster, but the Raiders prevailed.

Earlier histories of the Raiders have alluded to the controversial nature of Lt.Col. Carlson and his eccentric politics, without going into much detail. Finally, we have a bit more of the story. There were suspicions by some, that Carlson was a communist, as he had temporarilly accompanied the Chinese communist forces in China prior to World War II. This is where he learned about guerilla-warfare, and the value of a raiding force. Carlson was openly a socialist, but also a Christian, and certainly no communist. Although I can not identify with his socialist idealism, I can sympathize with his sincere belief in democracy and egalitarianism.

Carlson communicated openly with all his personnel, group discussions were held that included all ranks. He believed it was hypocrytical for military personnel serving a democratic nation, to be subjected to dictatorial and un-democratic leadership. He despised blind obediance, and endorsed the concept that democracy requires thinking human beings, not puppets. As a veteran, I believe this is a basic fact that still needs to be addressed in our military. Being an American means being free. A volunteer serving in the armed forces should never forget that fact. Naturally, there are circumstances that demand strict adherance to orders, but common-sense people are aware of this. The Raiders did too. Like all of us, Carlson may have been overly idealistic and naiive in some of his views (socialism), but in the grand scheme, he was a true visionary. In short, he was a free-thinking non-conformist, and I believe his heart was in the right place.

Carlson would be pleased to know that his influence on the Marine Corps was not forgotten, and not in vain. His "Gung Ho" philosophy of team-work and egalitarianism amongst Marines is still there, more prominent in some units than in others, but more prominent in the Marines than in any other service.
