personal dialogue with God( yet?) so universal

It is a series of dialogues with God ( within the background of Bible) by a women on every aspect that is affecting as a mother, wife, career woman; except few, every one find it easy to read through and will derive some meaning; a perfect book for gift; It is not moralistic; humanistic. One should not categorise it as woman oriented since the other is a woman; Should we say David's psalms for men only? or Job's cry for men onyl; The book belong to this category in its theme. Even in Bible,we come across the woman at Jacob's well who may be the first to carry the Good news to her village; For some interested to look for similar themes in Hindusim, I can draw attention to Kunti's prayers; Meera's Bhajans; Gopika's geetham ( Bhagavatam). There are exactly same in the focus, but they are conversation with God. Even in India, a modern women will find easier to identify with the Majorie Holmes rather than characters in Hindu puranas; So Who AM I, God? is a good gift for any boby ( male or female). She seeks support from God to deal with the question of fatal attraction. She seeks guidance from God to deal with depression,divorce... She seeks support for quitting smoking. So....

Ageless & timeless as our cry for guidance from our Creator

Who Am I God, by Marjorie Holmes was given to me in 1970 after the birth of my first child. It has guided me, comforted and given words to my deepest feeling. It covers the universal joys and challanges of life including the death of a child. The Bible and this book consoled me after our daughter died in 1993. It is ageless and timeless, whispering the words we speak in the silence of our hearts to our Creator. I am purchasing a copy for my daughter who is a young mother.

Dirk Pitt is winding down.

Yes, my hero is winding down. Probably making way for that newer team of "Blue Gold". Somehow Dirk didn't seem to have his heart in the adventure this time. The search for Norse colonists on the Hudson seemed a bit contrived and only a sideline. And Al was hardly heard from at all! He was more like the ever present bodyguard - the guy that hovers, but never speaks.It sounds as if I hated the book, but I actually enjoyed it tremendously. There were numerous changes that I did like - along with the subtle hint that there was a good chance that we haven't seen the last of Dirk and Co. I was very happy to see the relationship with the congresswoman played down. I never liked her, and I hope in light of the ending - which was simply fabulous - I hope she disappears altogether. (Big hint,Mr Cussler!) The one, most unfortunate, circumstance, was the use of the World Trade Center as a target. People must remember that it was written many months before the recent attack, and was, in fact, published prior to the event. But it sure did bring chills when I read it only a few days after. But as redeeming factors, the expanded role of Mr Cussler himself and the aforementioned ending, was worth it. It was surprising,touching,unconventional for our hero,and one of the best endings Mr Cussler has ever devised. I cannot wait for the followup!

Valhalla rose to the challenge!

Another Clive Cussler success! Plenty of action, a little romance, and a lot of adventure! This one would have to rate along side Inca Gold, and Floodtide as my favorite Cussler novels. As per his successful formula, Dirk Pitt again gets himself into trouble by helping to save a damsel in distress, and he gets more than his money's worth, and so do we. I particularly enjoyed the aerial battle scene above New York City. He obviously wrote the novel pre-9/11.
My only negative comment, is that you get the feeling he retired his major character(Dirk Pitt/Personna of Cussler himself) with this novel. Too bad, cause a lot of older guys, like myself really warmed up to Dirk, and Al, and loved reading of them getting themselves into, and out of perils. I look forward to reading his next novel Fire Ice, but will miss Dirk, and Al.

Good, not the best Cussler. Ideas are getting old.

I've been reading Cussler since Raise The Titanic. He's gone from fresh and original, to tarnished and long winded. When Cussler copied Hitchcock's walk-ons with little cameos of himself as a character in the books it was cute. The first time. The second time it was lane. Now it's just annoying, especially since it's no longer a cameo, but a minor character. If you read the book, you know the ending. WHY the briefcase? What was the point? It was really lame. Cussler is aging Dirk Pitt, and that's fine. But after he reminisced about his long lost, drowned in the underwater lab, girlfriend, you saw the final few pages coming a mile away. Predictable. Will I keep reading Cussler? Sure - even his bad books are better than many writer's good efforts.

Veteran journalist Hallman expands his Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of Sam Lightner, a boy born with a rare, disfiguring growth on his face, into a heart-breaking saga of the emotional, physical and psychological battles Sam and his family have fought since his birth in 1985. The growth, a "tangle of lymphatic capillary cells" beneath the skin of Sam's face, necessitates two surgeries before Sam is even a week old; when the boy nearly dies after a 1989 operation, his parents decide that surgery to remove the mass is out of the question until Sam himself demands it. Hallman, a reporter at the Portland Oregonian who first met Sam in 1999, tenderly chronicles Sam's childhood and early adolescence: his difficulties fitting in at school, his inability to participate in activities with other children, his yearning to lead a more normal life. In 2000, Sam undergoes surgery in Boston. Initially it seems successful, but back in Portland, Sam slips into a coma. His pediatric neurosurgeon and his parents are the only ones who believe he will live; eventually Sam proves them right. Hallman's writing is crisp and affecting, though also sometimes overly dramatic and simplistic. Beyond 5 stars

I absolutely adored this book. The story of Sam is amazing, compelling, and most of all, humbling. Since reading it four years ago, I have found myself looking more for the good things of life instead of finding tiny, unimportant details to criticize. In that, I can truly say this book was life-changing for me. Sam, wherever you are, I hope that you are well and happy. You are a role model for us all with your courage and point of view!

Look on the inside please!

Sam Lightner was born with a horribly deforming vascular tumor on the left side of his face that was so disfiguring and otherworldly that an adult at a Halloween party complimented for his marvelous costume. This is the kind of situation that Sam has lived with since he was an infant - the stares, the laughter, the shock, the misunderstandings. If any story teaches the lesson of appreciating a person's heart rather than his appearance, it is this one.
Sam was born with a large vascular tumor on the left side of his place that progressively compromised not only his appearance but also his basic vital functions including breathing and eating. It took a few courageous physicians to treat his condition. Drs. Marler and Mulleken at Boston Children's and Dr. Wehby in Portland are a few of the doctors that enabled Sam to have a fighting chance. What makes this book such a compelling read is not only the heroics of Sam's physicians but the courage of Sam and his family. Hallman delivers Sam's struggle to fit in with such an emotional impact that I had to quit reading the book in parts to take a breather. Sam's family is portrayed as truly remarkable, and their handling of Sam's problems is a lesson to be learned by all.
Unfortunately, the book leaves us hanging (not the author's fault) because Sam's story is not finished. He most likely will undergo further plastic surgery to shape his face, and he may undergo additional operations if his tumor returns.
Hopefully, this book can teach us a little about how to give respect to those like Sam who need support rather than the stares we often give them.

Great story about an amazing kid.

I read the original newspaper series about Sam, and when I heard there was a book being published, I couldn't wait to read it. I was not disappointed. This more in depth and up-to-date look at Sam's life, his struggles, and his strength is an awsome testimony to the strength of the human spirit and of the importance of a close and supportive family.
The things Sam has faced in his short life make any difficulties you and I face seem very trivial. He is a true life hero, as are the amazing doctors who have helped him alaong the way. If this story does not touch you in a deep and meaningful way, I don't know what will.
Tom Hallman has done an excellent job of putting the reader in Sam's life where we can experience a little of what he faces every day. Yet, he keeps the book moving so we don't get too bogged down in the details. This is positively a book you will want to, and can, read cover to cover in a short period of time.

Bancroft draws on 16 years of counseling men who abuse women and as a custody evaluator and child-abuse investigator to offer sound advice to women who are abused by their partners and are concerned about the impact on their children. Without judging women in abusive situations, Bancroft emphasizes that they are in the best position to help their children heal after witnessing abuse. She begins by describing how children view abuse from verbal put-downs of their mother to physical abuse and how their conflict and confusion manifest in a range of symptoms from sleeping and eating disorders to underperformance in school. She ends each chapter with action guidelines for women called "What Can I Do?" Bancroft analyzes the pros and cons of deciding whether to stay with or leave an abusive partner and offers coping strategies that include teaching children to be open about their feelings and devising a "safety plan" of escape if necessary. A wonderful resource for moms.

An easy to read book with a wealth of valuable information. It is an excellent book for parents who have been involved with controlling partners or anyone who works with families. The book gives a detailed description of how batterers affect the children with whom they live. Bancroft's book offers parents user friendly ideas for helping their children heal after being exposed to a partner who physically or emotionally batters. Bancroft offers an options based model that recognizes the parent knows the batterer the best and she is the best person to support her children.

This is an excellent book. It's informative, but very sensitive. I would highly recommend it to any moms out there that are being abused in any way, shape or form. Especially if you don't feel your kids are being affected by you being abused. Because guess what?! They are!

This is the best book available about the effects of domestic abuse on children! It's a valuable tool for self-help or counselors. I am a Clinical Social Worker and Certified Domestic Violence Professional, and I recommend this book to most of my clients who are facing issues of divorce, custody, and coping with their children's emotional needs in the aftermath of an abusive relationship. I also use this author's other book "Why Does He Do That?" regularly in working with domestic violence victims and survivors.

Best of the series so far

This one got to me. A family is murdered but their daughter survives because she disobeyed and got out of bed to go to the kitchen for a snack. I cried as I read the sections with Nixie. Watching Eve deal with a nine-year-old was fun but heart-wrenching. I did think it would end differently but
'twas not to be. Oh, Eve does get the bad guy. Probably the best of the series so far.

Scott maintains a consulting firm, Fierce Conversations, which provides leadership programs on creating positive change through powerful communication. The conversations she refers to may be the very ones that you have been avoiding in your relationships at work or at home. They involve bringing those brutally honest and sometimes painful subjects to the surface with your coworkers, your spouse, and especially yourself. The case studies from her consulting practice are very instructive. Typically, personal conflicts may be so destructive as to sabotage the day-to-day operations of a company and affect performance, morale, and income. In her meetings with coworkers, Scott attacks the issues head-on, getting everyone to speak up about the things that he or she has been thinking but dares not say. The result is a clearing of the air, a breaking of tension. Sometimes people are "made available to industry," her euphemism for being fired. How to get to the heart of the matter through conversation

Susan Scott has written an outstanding book on how to use everyday conversation to cut through the politics of work relationships and start talking about what we are all "pretending not to know". I was consistently impacted while reading it, not so much that the material is brand new, but that it is presented in such a way that the opportunities and misses of my own interactions were obvious.

One of the topics discussed is called "Mineral Rights", a type of conversation designed to get deep, past the surface and into the truth of what is going on. The approach accomplishes four purposes: Interrogate reality, provoke learning, tackle tough challenges, and enrich relationships. It has been my experience that this rarely happens in corporate America, and is rarer still where I work now. The book uses examples from various companies that have identified their core values and been honest enough with themselves and others to start acting on them. The many questions posed throughout the book, and the sections at the end of each chapter are a great way to start interrogating reality in your workplace. The answers usually are "in the room" if we can really get honest and start looking for them.

In addition to some great business council, much of the book focuses on how we get honest with ourselves. Often we are the problem, and our own inability to truly understand where our own issues lie, is an essential journey to better facilitate the kind of change we want in our business or relationships. Another great approach used is the "Decision Tree" to help build empowerment in others. Communicate clearly what decisions can be made and what must be communicated to others. (Page 252). Her insights into how silence is an effective communication tool, both internally and in interactions with others, were right on.

While this was all excellent, and perhaps the most well written summary of engaging communication approaches, what was the most powerful for me were the sections on our "emotional wake". We all leave an emotional wake behind us as we engage in conversations with people. The question is, what kind of wake do we want to leave? How do we want people to feel? This served as a great wake up call for me while reading.

Overall, this book is so full of great wisdom and insights I couldn't begin to do it justice here. From the opening examples to the very useful questions in the back and the study guides throughout, I believe this to be one of the best books on business and personal communication I have read. It is both deep and practical, both academically sound and real world tested, and is written in such a way that it felt like a conversation itself. Highly recommended!

a practical, real world tool

Susan Scott was a corporate coach who realized that people are hungry for authentic communications. She takes the concept of authenticity and mixes it in with good leadership practice to produce a book that is filled with practical advice in one's professional and personal conversations.
I am generally put off by simple "formula" approaches to dealing with tough issues, but Scott mixes the importance of reflection and courage along with a simple structure. As a corporate consultant who was using this book as a resource, I was prepared to write it off as too "pop" or simplistic, and instead found solid reference to the importance of showing onesself, understanding the value in recognizing that each party to a conversation brings their own set of "truths," and grounding our conversations in a solid understanding of who we are and where we want to go. Furthermore, she makes a point of using listening as a key strategy for leaders -- one that is often talked about, but rarely reinforced as ably as it is here.
Some of Scott's examples are stilted and overly simplistic,she holds herself up as a model of perfection a little too often, and she ocassionally lapses into self-help verbiage that is annoying, and a distraction from a solid product. Nevertheless, for those of us who need to persuade others about the importance of authentic one-on-one communication, or for those of us who forget the magic of intense one-on-one communication with those we care about, this is worth reading and acting upon.

Fierce as in True

If we have ever needed a book like this, now is the time. Just think what could have happened at Enron, WorldCom, etc. if people had been willing to talk to each other about what was really going on? This is both a "think about this" and a "here's how to use it" book that can give people the courage and tools to tell others what they are seeing and believing. Don't be put off by the title, Fierce does not mean you get to beat everyone up - it really is an invitation to, as the author says - interrogate reality. Susan Scott does an effective job in weaving her three big ideas about conversations through the book. The ideas are simple yet powerful and can change the way we talk both to ourselves and to others. She captured me right away with the first concept; that our lives (and work) succeed or fail one conversation at a time, including those conversations we don't have. The book is an easy read. The concepts are clearly presented both in theory and with amusing stories and, best of all, there are practical tips on how to use the information. I enjoyed reading it and putting the principles into action. I'll be giving copies to friends and colleagues. This is one of those books that belongs both at home and the office.

Net Force: The Next Generation?

As a somewhat core fan of the 2 Net Force series (the regular novels and the younger Net Force Explorer series) I was more waiting to see what the latest installment would bring for the future's Net/world defense team. After reading the latest I was a little disappointed by the story but still hopeful that with all the new additions to the team future volumes will definitely keep up the good work.
The title refers to the fact that several prominent characters from past Net Force books make their last appearances as members of the Net Force, including Alex Michaels, the Commander in the first seven books. He hands down the title (hence "Changing of the Guard") to Thomas Thorn, while the field unit is handed from General Howard to Abe Kent, a former Marine.
Not too soon after the changeovers does Net Force find itself involved in a case where a disc containing the names of former Russian spies falls into its hands. The disc leads to an attempted kidnapping of one of Net Force's top computer agents, Jay Gridley. We learn that the attempt was perpetrated by a hitman assigned by a multibillionaire who is afraid the disc's information will reveal him to be a former spy himself and will stop at nothing to make sure that the info never sees the light of day. But when the kidnapping gets bungled and Gridley ends up in a coma, Net Force has to stop the attacker and find out what is hidden on the disc.
The story is a seeming partial re-treading of a previous Net Force story that also sent Gridley into a coma, but this time it isn't as engrossing as before. As for the new Net Forcers (Thorn and Kent), they get a rough first start in the mission field but hopefully their next adventure will definitely give them time to flesh themselves out to the reader.
Overall, this was an alright chapter in the Net Force legacy, but not all that satisfying to those who have been with it since book 1.

Not the best in the series, but still good...

During the trip home from Orlando, I was able to finish up Tom Clancy's Net Force: Changing Of The Guard. This is part of his paperback series that bear his name but is written by others. The setting is about 10 years in the future, and the action revolves around a government office called Net Force. This group uses computer technology and the Internet to track down criminal activity. In this installment, the NF group has obtained an encrypted disk with the names of all the Russian spies throughout the world. The breakdown of the code is going slow, but a certain sleeper spy in the US is willing to do anything to keep the government from learning of his involvement. When the top NF codebreaker is nearly killed in a kidnapping attempt, there is an all-out attempt to find the killer and the person who might have hired him.
Generally speaking, it's a good read. It will make more sense if you've followed the series, as there are references to past people and events that you won't know about otherwise. It doesn't kill the book if you haven't done the reading, but it helps. I personally like near-future techno-thriller novels, so this one works for me. It's not as action-packed as others in the series, but it is still a pleasant diversion.

Quality control needs improvement

It is an interesting story but there are some errors that will distract the reader from the fiction that the author is creating. I can't believe that Clancy does not know the difference between the Baltics and the Balkans (see page 121). I hope it is a big oversight or a super-sized typo. Or could it be that Clancy is going to have the Serbs and the Croats who live in the Balkans go looking for oil in the Baltics where the Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians live? Is he creating a new fictional ethnic conflict for a future book? Or is it lack of geographic knowledge? Also, when Eduard is escaping from the mansion, at times I visualize him on a bicycle, and at other times on a motorbike. Do I have a reading problem, or is there a writing problem here? Note, this is not to criticize the book as a whole, but just to criticize specific instances of lack of quality control that caused me to deduct one star.
