The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century, by Thomas P.M. Barnett

Since the end of the Cold War, America's national security establishment has been searching for a new operating theory to explain how this seemingly "chaotic" world actually works. Gone is the clash of blocs, but replaced by what?

Thomas Barnett has the answers. A senior military analyst with the U.S. Naval War College, he has given a constant stream of briefings over the past few years, and particularly since 9/11, to the highest of high-level civilian and military policymakers-and now he gives it to you. The Pentagon's New Map is a cutting-edge approach to globalization that combines security, economic, political, and cultural factors to do no less than predict and explain the nature of war and peace in the twenty-first century.

Building on the works of Friedman, Huntington, and Fukuyama, and then taking a leap beyond, Barnett crystallizes recent American military history and strategy, sets the parameters for where our forces will likely be headed in the future, outlines the unique role that America can and will play in establishing international stability-and provides much-needed hope at a crucial yet uncertain time in world history.

For anyone seeking to understand the Iraqs, Afghanistans, and Liberias of the present and future, the intimate new links between foreign policy and national security, and the operational realities of the world as it exists today, The Pentagon's New Map is a template, a Rosetta stone. Agree with it, disagree with it, argue with it-there is no book more essential for 2004 and beyond.

Amazon.com Review
This bold and important book strives to be a practical "strategy for a Second American Century." In this brilliantly argued work, Thomas Barnett calls globalization "this country’s gift to history" and explains why its wide dissemination is critical to the security of not only America but the entire world. As a senior military analyst for the U.S. Naval War College, Barnett is intimately familiar with the culture of the Pentagon and the State Department (both of which he believes are due for significant overhauls). He explains how the Pentagon, still in shock at the rapid dissolution of the once evil empire, spent the 1990s grasping for a long-term strategy to replace containment. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Barnett argues, revealed the gap between an outdated Cold War-era military and a radically different one needed to deal with emerging threats. He believes that America is the prime mover in developing a "future worth creating" not because of its unrivaled capacity to wage war, but due to its ability to ensure security around the world. Further, he believes that the U.S. has a moral responsibility to create a better world and the way he proposes to do that is by bringing all nations into the fold of globalization, or what he calls connectedness. Eradicating disconnectedness, therefore, is "the defining security task of our age." His stunning predictions of a U.S. annexation of much of Latin America and Canada within 50 years as well as an end to war in the foreseeable future guarantee that the book will be controversial. And that's good. The Pentagon's New Map deserves to be widely discussed. Ultimately, however, the most impressive aspects of the book is not its revolutionary ideas but its overwhelming optimism. Barnett wants the U.S. to pursue the dream of global peace with the same zeal that was applied to preventing global nuclear war with the former Soviet Union. High-level civilian policy makers and top military leaders are already familiar with his vision of the future—this book is a briefing for the rest of us and it cannot be ignored. --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly
Barnett, professor at the U.S. Naval War College, takes a global perspective that integrates political, economic and military elements in a model for the postâ€"September 11 world. Barnett argues that terrorism and globalization have combined to end the great-power model of war that has developed over 400 years, since the Thirty Years War. Instead, he divides the world along binary lines. An increasingly expanding "Functioning Core" of economically developed, politically stable states integrated into global systems is juxtaposed to a "Non-Integrating Gap," the most likely source of threats to U.S. and international security. The "gap" incorporates Andean South America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and much of southwest Asia. According to Barnett, these regions are dangerous because they are not yet integrated into globalism's "core." Until that process is complete, they will continue to lash out. Barnett calls for a division of the U.S. armed forces into two separate parts. One will be a quick-strike military, focused on suppressing hostile governments and nongovernment entities. The other will be administratively oriented and assume responsibility for facilitating the transition of "gap" systems into the "core." Barnett takes pains to deny that implementing the new policy will establish America either as a global policeman or an imperial power. Instead, he says the policy reflects that the U.S. is the source of, and model for, globalization. We cannot, he argues, abandon our creation without risking chaos. Barnett writes well, and one of the book's most compelling aspects is its description of the negotiating, infighting and backbiting required to get a hearing for unconventional ideas in the national security establishment. Unfortunately, marketing the concepts generates a certain tunnel vision. In particular, Barnett, like his intellectual models Thomas Friedman and Francis Fukuyama, tends to accept the universality of rational-actor models constructed on Western lines. There is little room in Barnett's structures for the apocalyptic religious enthusiasm that has been contemporary terrorism's driving wheel and that to date has been indifferent to economic and political factors. That makes his analytical structure incomplete and more useful as an intellectual exercise than as the guide to policy described in the book's promotional literature.

From Booklist
It has been generally recognized that the end of the cold war and the emerging threat of international terrorism presented new challenges in planning American diplomatic and military strategy. What has often been lacking is a coherent, integrated vision that assesses the new threats to American interests and provides a comprehensive plan for coping with them. Barnett, a senior strategic researcher and professor at the U.S. Naval War College, presents his operating theory, which sees the principal threat to American security arising from dysfunctional or so-called failed states, which provide fertile ground for the recruitment and sustenance of terrorists. On the other hand, as such past adversaries as Russia and China are integrated into global economic and political systems, they are less threatening. To counter these threats, Barnett suggests some bold, even revolutionary, changes in our military structure and in the dispersion and utilization of our forces. Of course, both his analyses and remedies are open to debate, but Barnett's compelling assertions are worthy of strong consideration and are sure to provoke controversy. Jay Freeman

... people America has murdered in the name of some stupid set of values is justified
By Marvin Sannes
Barnett is one of those American Warriors who thinks the 50 million people America has murdered in the name of some stupid set of values is justified. Anyone who accepts this unending war of terror as anything but an American invasion, occupation, murder, and rape of 3rd world countries for resources is still watching the myths and cartoons of the TV. This idiot is good with The Empire!

Elegant Ideas in a very wordy volume
By Chris
The Pentagon's new map relies on the concept and importance of connectedness (aka globalization) as the key to world stability. Barnett defines two 'camps' in the world: 'core' nations who follow the rules of civilization, and 'gap'countries who are focused on disconnecting civilization for their own gain. He explains that connectedness is facilitated and preserved by free movement of people, energy, investments, and security (I would add ideas/information and technology to these 4 but one could argue that 'they're in there'). This elegant model has roots in history and with considered thinking does not appear overly simplistic as some reviewers have suggested. It is appealing to portray the world as so complex that nothing can be accomplished (Barnett alludes to this) but solutions that work are generally the simplest (Sir William of Occam).

One of the alarming messages from the book is the low quality of thinking and decision processes prevalent in the defense establishment. It is commendable that Barnett took the uncommon action of connecting to business/economics thinkers but if defense analysts are not routinely tapping into the private sector for information, tools and processes, they are in the dark relative to what is happening in the world. The descriptions of what passes for problem solving and decision making processes in the Pentagon sound third rate.

The only problem with this book is it is about 3-5 times longer that it needs to be, saying the same things over and over with slightly different nuances. The saving grace is Barnett is a good story teller and it is very readable. However, it can be a 'tough slog' to absorb all the tidbits in support of the major thesis. It would be easy to lower the rating to 4 stars just on the basis of writing style and verbosity. Barnett may be a good brief writer but he's a wordy guy. He would have a tougher time 'making it' in a cutting edge business because he wouldn't have enough time to get his message out.

Critical source for serious consideration of where we are
By Dennis E. Landry
Mr. Barnett's book is a critical source for serious individuals who feel the need to view current events in a larger context. This book creates the sense of context that the media and, frankly, our government should but does not provide.

There is consistent food for thought and serious analysis of where we are and how we got there in terms of global security issues and our capabilities to address them.

This is not a Democratic/Republican, left/right piece of work.

This book does create new understandings of the geopolitical challenges and opportunities we face as a nation and creates a significan focus on what we have to do and why we have to do it.

From Publishers Weekly
A simple 7-step program to deal with an emotionally or physically abusive loved one (spouse, parent, sibling or child) seems too easy to be effective. But Gentry is not a lightweight pop author; he is editor in chief of the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, and has been working with victims of what he calls "toxic" anger ("anger that is experienced far too often, is far too intense and lasts far too long") for decades. Believable case studies illustrate how Gentry’s seven steps can work, and he accepts the irrationality of the love that makes people reluctant to leave such relationships (though if the other steps fail, he advises, it may be necessary to leave). Questionnaires and tables help readers evaluate their situation and answer such questions as "how angry is too angry?" He then offers sensible, tested steps, not to change the angry person, but to manage the anger and one’s response to it, such as getting a support network and controlling one’s own anger. Anyone in a toxic anger situation will benefit from Gentry’s calm, wise advice.

Pinpoints problems, offers few solutions
By Lauren M. Bloom
"When Someone You Love Is Angry" is tremendously enlightening and affirming for those who are just coming to grips with a loved one's excessive anger. If you've ever wondered if you were just "too sensitive" or whether you were somehow responsible for triggering someone's rage, verbal or even physical attacks, this book will give you a dispassionate benchmark from which to evaluate your situation. If you're looking for clear proof that you really aren't crazy, "When Someone You Love Is Angry" is an absolute gem.

Unfortunately, the book is less successful in offering strategies for managing rage in a relationship. It particularly falls short in offering solutions for adults who grew up in angry homes, acknowledging but never really addressing the challenges of dealing with an elderly parent's anger. Perhaps there are no obvious solutions for children of angry parents - not every problem can be fixed, after all - but "When Someone You Love Is Angry" would be even more helpful if it included more suggestions for dealing with rage.

assessing and dealing with anger in others
By Jennifer K. Paweleck-Bellingrodt, Psy.D.
this book is a great tool for assessing your own or someone else's anger and learning how to deal with the latter. it starts out defining toxic anger in terms of personal and interpersonal consequences via a couple of quizzes to help you get started. next, the book takes a look at what gentry calls "loving but angry" (LBA) relationships and tries to help the reader understand why certain people are so angry. there is also a section on assessing damages which forces the reader to look at the reality of the relationship he is in to decide what to do next.

the next chapters are spent looking at the seven steps for dealing with the anger and moving forward, reviewing various possibilities in terms of what that might look like and how to take the next steps. these steps include concepts such as soliciting support, ensuring that perceptions are accurate, setting limits and discontinuing enabling patterns, avoiding the rabbit hole of toxic anger oneself, strengthening one's coping skills in the face of stressors such as toxic anger or other abusive patterns and taking steps to move on if nothing else is working.

gentry calls it like it is and provides a great deal of information and answers in less than 200 pages. in a world full of multi-step self-help programs, it's not easy to stand out; but this book does. it's a concise manual for dealing with a loved one's anger and saving yourself from the negative effects. since these relationships can be overwhelming for those in them, the simple, step-by-step approach and guidelines given in this book are great.

Years ago, Lucas Davenport almost died at the hands of Clara Rinker, a pleasant, soft-spoken, low-key Southerner, and the best hitwoman in the business. Now retired and living in Mexico, she nearly dies herself when a sniper kills her boyfriend, the son of a local druglord, and while the boy's father vows vengeance, Rinker knows something he doesn't: The boy wasn't the target-she was-and now she is going to have to disappear to find the killer herself. The FBI and DEA draft Davenport to help track her down, and with his fiancie deep in wedding preparations, he's really just as happy to go-but he has no idea what he's getting into. For Rinker is as unpredictable as ever, and between her, her old bosses in the St. Louis mob, the Mexican druglord, and the combined, sometimes warring, forces of U.S. law enforcement, this is one case that will get more dangerous as it goes along. And when the crossfire comes, anyone standing in the middle won't stand a chance....

Filled with the rich characterization and exceptional drama that are his hallmarks, Mortal Prey proves that John Sandford just keeps getting better.

Amazon.com Review
Lucas Davenport's boss is about to lose her job as chief of police, his fiancée is distracted with wedding plans, and his house-remodeling project is at a standstill. So when the FBI and DEA draft the Minneapolis cop to head off hit woman Clara Rinker's bloody murder spree, he's glad to oblige. The lady killer and the killer lady have tangled before in Sandford's Prey series, and their personal history seasons this fast-paced story of mayhem, murder, and revenge. After Rinker barely survives an assassination attempt that destroys her unborn baby and kills her lover, the son of a Mexican drug lord, she sets out to destroy the mobsters who ordered the hit, a journey that brings her into Davenport's sights again and also puts him back in action alongside a woman agent with whom he was once involved. But it's the grudging respect and even affection Sandford hints at between Rinker and Lucas that takes this crisp, confident thriller beyond the limitations of the genre and makes the characters flesh-and-blood human beings. A standout in a terrific series! --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
It's the little things about Lucas Davenport that make him such a kick to follow his ruminations about why a public bus smells like urine, his fear that a cell phone won't work in the bathroom "with all the tile." Davenport is, of course, a marvelous if unorthodox cop from Minneapolis, starring here in his 13th Prey offering, which finds creator Sandford operating at top efficiency and in high style. Clara Rinker, the hit woman extraordinaire who slipped out of Davenport's grasp in 1999's Certain Prey, is now back on the prowl, looking for revenge against old enemies from Kansas City who killed her fiance and shot her in the gut. The bullet spared her life, but not that of her baby. The FBI, knowing she's headed to Missouri, assembles a huge team of shirt-and-tie, laptop-carrying agents, but also taps Davenport to make the trip. Sure enough, Rinker starts knocking off old business partners in creative ways, making the tech-minded FBI look foolish. It's only Davenport and his feet-on-the-street savvy that finally rope Rinker into a furious pursuit and showdown. Sandford's eye for the tell-all character quirk remains finely tuned, as does his deadpan humor, rivaled by few in the crime-drama ranks. Longtime fans should take note that changes are ahead for Davenport. He's marrying his sweetie, Dr. Weather Karkinnen, and they're having a kid. He's also about to leave the city police force, following his boss, Rose Marie Roux, to a job with the state police.

From Library Journal
In Mortal Prey, Lucas Davenport is back again, dealing with building his dream house, planning a wedding with the expectant Dr. Weather Karkinnen, and leaving the city police force for a job with the state police. Then bodies start to stack up, and he's drafted by the FBI and the DEA to track down and stop revenge-obsessed hit woman Clara Rinker. The juxtaposition of the great cop with the great criminal creates a startling tale that is filled with rich characterization and exceptional drama. Richard Ferrone continues his excellent tradition of narrating Sandford's "Prey" series, bringing just the right clarity and action to enhance the listener's experience. Highly recommended. Denise A. Not with a Whimper but a Bang
By Marc Ruby™
Loyal Lucas Davenport fans will remember Clara Rinker, the stone killer from 'Certain Prey.' After making her escape, she fled to Cancún, where she established a new identity, found a lover and became pregnant. Clara, now Cassie McLain, was on her way to a normal existence for the first time in her life. Then a hired gun from the States makes an attempt on her life killing her boyfriend and wounding her enough to lose her child. Clara recovers with one thing one her mind - cold, cold revenge. Clara's going home, with some very evil plans.
When the FBI realize that McLain was Rinker and has returned to the States, they call in Davenport, who is, after all, the only cop to ever even come close to catching her. Lucas, who is spending his time annoying builders and supervising his fiancée Weather's pregnancy, reluctantly agrees. Actually, the truth is that Weather tells him to go away and stop bothering her. What follows is a classical chase thriller where Rinker manages to keep killing one step ahead of her pursuers. In several cases, she even manages to rub Lucas's face in it.
If you are a sucker for tricks and wild plot devices, you are going to love 'Mortal Prey.' Rinker is smart and crazy. Each killing is detailed and jarring, full of the kind of twists that keep this from being yet another long chase. And while Clara is certainly over the top, Sandford manages to make her a sympathetic character all on her own. I found myself cheering for her time after time. She is after the Mafia men who put out the hit on her and she intends to get each and every one. That she is also capable of killing anyone in her way seems to become a matter of indifference.
Lucas and the FBI agents as well, repeatedly get left holding the bag. Malone and Mallard return, along with a host of camp followers. Davenport, true to his nature, runs his own investigation with the help of some St. Louis retired officers, and manages to keep finding almost enough clues. Of course, it wouldn't be any fun if they caught her too early, and the little glitches and tricks that keep her out of reach are novel enough to keep the action moving without any sign of tedium.
Oddly enough, Sandford does such a good job of making Rinker likeable that he winds up making Davenport look a bit of a jerk. One is tempted to think he is suffering from a bad case of premarital jitters, and that may very well be the case. I can't consider it a major defect, because the book itself is extremely well written. Certainly, it is a welcome return to Sandford's best form.

Wow - fantastic!
By Carole T
I feel as if I know Lucas Davenport personally. Sandford has an exceptional ability to write an exciting novel with fully developed characters. Can't say I've ever looked forward to the next book in the series as much as I enjoy seeing what happens next to Lucas and the other strong male and female characters I've come to care about.

Clara Rinker is back!
By L. Quido
In this, his 13th book in the Lucas Davenport series, Sandford can't resist getting Lucas out of town, despite his impending nuptials, new baby, and new house (or should I say palace?) in Minneapolis. Sandford can surround Lucas with the mundane, but never for long....it's on to St. Louis (where he does a credible job of giving the reader the "feel" of the city), by way of Cancun, Mexico. Lucas' globetrotting arises when the FBI includes him in the hunt for Clara Rinker. She's surfaced again
(Sandford introduced her in "Certain Prey", where she definitely got the better of Davenport) and the FBI wants her out of circulation.
Who better to help them than Davenport? Although he's seeking revenge for a near-mortal blow that Rinker, the most effective hitwoman in the business, dealt him, Davenport has an instinct for what Clara would do, and that instinct helps keep the FBI close on her heels. The FBI team is unaware that Davenport has made himself a member of a close circle of ex-cops in St. Louis, men who are bored with the retirement life, whose knowledge of the city helps give Davenport the clues the team needs to corner Rinker and end her local killing spree of crime bosses who sought to kill her and ended her engagement and pregnancy. Loftus and Andreno, two of the local ex-cops, are great characters, and one would think that Sandford will bring them back.
This is Sandford's best work in awhile, and he's successful at alternating the point of view of his tale between Lucas and Rinker herself. Rinker becomes multi-dimensional in the telling of the tale from her perspective. The book is a nonstop thrillride of near-misses in getting to Rinker, and Davenport finishes it off with not one, but two, big surprises in the ending.
Sandford returns to masterful form, and you will not be able to put "Mortal Prey" down!

Amazon.com Review
Betrayed by her new husband, lovely Scottish bride Iolanthe MacLeod dies by the sword in the fall of 1382 in a landlocked keep on the English moors, far from the sea she loves. Doomed to haunt the castle, little does she know that it will be nearly seven hundred years before the man of her dreams will come to rescue her. When Thomas MacLeod MacKinnon appears in 2001, Iolanthe isn't quite prepared to deal with her feelings for this modern man. And Thomas, although he grows accustomed to seeing and talking to ghosts in the castle, is stunned to realize that he's fallen in love with one of them.

Beautiful and desirable though Iolanthe is, he can't hold a spirit in his arms. Thomas has to find a way to go back in time and prevent her death--and he knows just how to accomplish the feat. Now if only saving the young Scotswoman's life proves to be as easy--and if he can rescue her, he'll be faced with having to convince Iolanthe that she loves him in another time and place. No medieval knight in shining armor ever had a quest quite this tough.

My Heart Stood Still is a tale that's absorbing, adventurous, and downright delightful. Kurland deftly juggles a cast of ghostly secondary characters with wonderful humor and a dry wit that makes for hilarious moments without losing the warmth and emotion of a compelling love story. All in all, an excellent novel. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Booklist
After an Englishman murders her in his castle in 1382, Iolanthe MacLeod gives up her dreams of a man coming to rescue her and spends the next 600 years haunting the place where she was killed. However, when American businessman Thomas McKinnon arrives to see the castle he has purchased in 2001, Iolanthe recognizes him as the man of her dreams. At first all Thomas wants to do is restore his crumbling old castle, but he soon finds himself falling in love with a ghost. Now all he has to do is find a way for Iolanthe to become a permanent part of his world. Written with poetic grace and a wickedly subtle sense of humor, Kurland's latest paranormal is the essence of pure romance. Sweet, poignant, and truly magical, this is a rare treat: a romance with characters readers will come to care about and a love story they will cherish. John Charles

Engaging ghostly love story
By A Customer
In 1382 on the Border, her half-brother and their father tell her to go with the Englishman because she has been bartered to forge an ally for the clan. They insist he will treat her right, but instead all he wants is the secrets of her father's keep. Since she knows nothing, the Englishman murders Iolanthe MacLeod even as she lies thinking will nobody remember her name. As she dies Iolanthe believes that one day her love will come to free her.

In 2001 Maine, Thomas MacLeod McKinnon feels he can do anything. His college degree at twenty, his Manhattan multimillion-dollar business, and his feats at mountain climbing prove he is right. He now owns a dilapidated Scottish castle, which he has decided to renovate. However, when he arrives at his new abode, Thomas surprisingly meets the ghost of Iolanthe. The Yank and the medieval Scottish spirit fall in love, but though he may be the man she waited for all these centuries, their chances for a relationship together seems impossible.

Lynn Kurland is attaining quite a reputation for her paranormal/time travel romances. Her newest entry, MY HEART STOOD STILL, is an engaging ghostly love story that her audience will devour. The tale is warm as Thomas struggles to find a way to be with his soul mate, who shares his desperate feelings. Ms. Kurland provides another powerful notch to her high standing among sub-genre readers with this entertaining novel that showcases her abilities to provide fans with quite a story.

To love a ghost!
By Phillip Schoppy
This is the first book by Kurland that I have read and it was indeed a good story that kept me interested for the most part. The romance between Thomas McKinnon and Iolanthe MacLeod is a good old fashioned love story with a twist--Iolanthe is a 600 hundred year old ghost!
The story begins quick and alot of characters (some ghosts)are introduced in the opening chapters and add substance to the story. Thomas has the ability to see spirits that other people cannot and he strikes up friendships with many of them. The setting is England/Scotland and after reading this tale I have a strange desire to learn Gaelic!
However, there are some bad points in the tale. For one stories that were being developed in the beginning were left hanging in the end and many questions went unanswered (I hate loose ends!). The story also seems to speed up near the end and some good ideas were never fully developed. Since this is part of a larger story by Kurland, I am thinking that maybe these questions were answered in previous books or will be answered in future ones. I do highly recommend this novel and I will probably read more Kurland in the future.

Sooo Beautiful...
By Kindle Customer
I loved this book. It proves that you can write a wonderful romance without steamy sex scenes. The hero has an unusual gift which allows him to see ghosts, which is how he sees the heroine. This gift can also lead to amusing situations.
I won't ruin it for others, but the secondary characters are great. They bring a lot of humor to the story. I also loved how Kurland tied these characters in with those from "Dance Through Time." I can't wait to read more of her books.

A refreshingly honest spiritual exploration from the New York Times bestselling author of the Anna Pigeon novels.

Actor, adventuress, seeker of truth, and author of the New York Times bestselling Anna Pigeon mystery series, Nevada Barr beckons readers to share her spiritual search for meaning in life.

Each chapter offers a truth or an answer forged through experience and deep reflection, and a nugget of insight certain to encourage thought and discussion among readers, who may, in turn, find their own spiritual language.

From Publishers Weekly
"A life ago," Barr writes, "I was depressed, broke, homeless, unemployed and divorced." One evening she wandered into an Episcopal church, primarily because it was unlocked. Desperation, not interest in religion, had brought her there, but warmly accepting parishioners kept her, and soon she wanted to be confirmed. "I went to the priest and asked him if it would be okay considering I didn't accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior, didn't believe the Bible was divinely inspired and wasn't entirely sure about the whole God thing. Fortunately Father Andrew had been tending his flock long enough to recognize a lost lamb when one came bleating into his office and put no obstacles in my way." It was a turning point for Barr, who here describes the resulting changes in her life and thinking over the last six years. Readers of Barr's bestselling mystery series featuring park ranger Anna Pigeon might have hoped for a whole book full of enlightenment about Anna's creator. However, apart from the introduction and occasional anecdotes throughout, her first nonfiction work is more a collection of personal essays than spiritual memoir. In more than 40 short chapters, she looks at topics as varied as forgiveness, girlfriends, being ordinary, Halloween and of course hats, usually saying more about how she thinks life should be lived than about how she actually lives hers. Nevertheless, Barr's sassy style, self-deprecating sense of humor and trenchant observations make for a good-and, yes, enlightening-read.

From Booklist
There is something about having survived a serious bout of clinical depression that causes a person to look inward in an effort to find meaning. For popular mystery writer Nevada Barr, author of the Anna Pigeon series, depression set off a chain of events that led her to embrace religion and spirituality. In these short essays, she charts the course of her spiritual evolution, how she sought to understand the many aspects of spiritual life, from forgiveness ("a sigh of relief on which the memory of evil is breathed out ") to pain ("it is a duty to relieve our own pain") to commitment ("not a contract with the world but with the self"). Barr's account of her transformation from nonbeliever to committed churchgoer--but one who maintains a healthy sense of doubt even as she prays and attends Bible studies--is moving but never saccharine. Her conclusion that one can believe in God (or any other higher being) and still live a life based on logic should appeal to other skeptics. Managing to be inspirational as well as practical, Barr finds in spirituality a way to get beyond self-centeredness: "It was a number of years of crashing and burning in the personal arena before I made the discovery that I was not God." Great book by a serious, honest thinker.
By John Harrison
This is not so much a book as a series of related essays about life and the other imponderables related to living. But, what a group of essays it is. This is not a book for the Bible thumpers, Barr is not so sure that she believes in God so much as she is now comfortable with the idea of God. And, she gets to this point, revelation by revelation, hat by hat, not of God but of her. You do not really understand her fiction unless you read this book. It adds such depth to her characters.
I enjoyed the book, and I profited from reading it. What more can you say about any book, any work of art? Buy it. Read it yourself and enjoy the presence of an interesting woman.

Last Man Down: A Firefighter's Story of Survival and Escape from the World Trade Center, by Richard Picciotto, Daniel Paisner

On September 11, 2001, FDNY Battalion Chief Richard "Pitch" Picciotto answered the call heard around the world. In minutes he was at Ground Zero of the worst terrorist attack on American soil, as the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center began to burn—and then to buckle. A veteran of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, Picciotto was eerily familiar with the inside of the North Tower. And it was there that he concentrated his rescue efforts. It was in its smoky stairwells where he heard and felt the South Tower collapse. Where he made the call for firemen and rescue workers to evacuate, while he stayed behind with a skeleton team of men to help evacuate a group of disabled and infirm civilians. And it was in the rubble of the North Tower where Picciotto found himself buried—for more than four hours after the building's collapse.

This is the harrowing true story of a true American hero, a man who thought nothing of himself—and gave nearly everything for others during one of New York City's—and the country's—darkest hours.

From Publishers Weekly
When the north tower of the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11, Picciotto, an FDNY battalion commander, was inside it, on a stairwell between the sixth and seventh floors, along with a handful of rescue personnel and one "civilian." This outspoken account tells of that indelible day, and it will shake and inspire readers to the core. The book starts by listing the 343 firefighters who died from the attacks, setting an appropriately grave tone to what follows, which begins as the author heads to work at Engine Co. 76 and Ladder Co. 22 on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Then comes a call on the intercom, and soon he is racing down to the World Trade Center. Arriving, he dodges falling bodies, runs inside and upstairs with a battalion not his own. Early in the book, this straightforward accounting is intercut with flash-forwards to 9:59 a.m., when Picciotto, on the 35th floor of the north tower, experiences the collapse of the south tower not visually, but aurally and in his body ("the building was shaking like an earthquake... but it was the rumble that struck me still with fear. The sheer volume of it. The way it coursed right through me... like a thousand runaway trains speeding toward me"). Picciotto, writing with Paisner (coauthor of autobios by Montel Williams and George Pataki, among others), pulls no punches, naming those who hindered his work and those who helped, taking numerous swipes at what he sees as a fire department bureaucracy whose money pinching puts firefighters at risk. This mouthiness can grate, but it certainly gives the flavor of a man and a department whose heroism became clear to all that day. It's Picciotto and his comrades' courage and willingness to sacrifice that every reader will remember, and honor, upon closing this gritty, heartfelt remembrance of a day of infamy and profound humanity.

From Booklist
This gripping, first-person account of a 9-11 survivor provides a firefighter's view of the World Trade Center catastrophe. An invaluable eyewitness to history as well as a professional just doing his job, Battalion Commander Richard Picciotto was inside the North Tower when it collapsed. Determined to be the last man down, Picciotto coordinated the rescue effort of several dozen incapacitated civilians. Stranded on the landing between the sixth and seventh floors when the building came tumbling down around and on top of him, Chief "Pitch," a small band of fellow firefighters, and one grandmotherly civilian improbably survived the collapse in a small vacuum created by the placement of the twisted debris. Collaborator Paisner, a best-selling biographer, allows Pitch to tell his harrowing story in his own no-nonsense voice. Picciotto bluntly castigates the departmental administrators responsible for the cost-cutting and ultimately life-threatening measures that left the leadership ranks depleted and the men on the line seriously underequipped. Certain to be a best-seller, this inspirational account serves as a tribute to all the firefighters and rescue personnel who unquestioningly put their lives on the line that day. Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Picciotto's account is one survivor's remarkable story... Its strength is its tone: conversational, free of literary pretense... The book is both grim and inspiring." —USA Today

A story about the WTC collapse as seen from its 7th floor.
By Stephen Goldenberg
I had seen Chief Picciotto and heard parts of his amazing story on TV last September but nothing takes the place of reading the details of his 9-11, in his own words.
His description of being in a stairwell on the 35th floor of the North tower when the South tower started to collapse will bring tears to your eyes. The recounting of his controversial decision to evacuate the rescue workers that were still climbing up the stairs of the North tower was compelling and probably saved the lives of hundreds of fire fighters. Reading his description of the collapse of the North tower while he was still on its 7th floor is almost as indescribable as the sounds he was hearing. And then his description of trying to figure out if he was dead or alive ("maybe this is what it feels like to be dead") are just some of the highlights that come to mind. But after all is said and done, it's the "diary" of his entire day, in story form, from the senior FDNY officer in the upper floors of the North tower, that puts you in the tower, with he and his men, in one of the most horrible, unimaginable situations the civilized world has ever experienced.
What made the story even more real for me is that the book covers about 12 hours of Picciotto's day and took me about 12 hours to read, making it appear as a "real time" account of this piece of 9-11 history.

Humbling awakening
By Stephen Collins
Stark reality of the incredible events of Sep 11 and the courage + tribulations of those whose daily actions we take for granted.
A highly personal account - warts and all.
Maybe individual memory differs from others - so what?
Here is a leader from the front, doing what he knows best + helping us understand a little more of this great and awful tragedy.
