From Library Journal
Teacher Jim Ironheart, aptly named, is sent by forces unknown to save chosen people in life-threatening situations. By chance, a young but jaded reporter stumbles onto his missions, and joins him to investigate who is controlling him and why. Shared nightmares begin to point to an extraterrestrial influence, and the pair are forced to confront Ironheart's forgotten past for answers. Koontz ( The Bad Place , LJ 12/89), a master at maintaining mystery and suspense, weaves themes from earlier novels into this latest thriller. Even if the ending calls to mind DuMaurier and Hitchcock, Cold Fire contains all the ingredients--likable characters, nail-biting suspense, and above all, unlimited imagination--that will please Koontz's fans. For all popular collections. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selection; Mystery Guild featured alternate; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/1/90.

A dark tale by Koontz
By IntriguedReader
This is one of Koontz's older novels and easy for the reader to pull in to the overall plot. The characters are well-developed, some of the scenes are intense and dark, and the pace builds up steadily.

Shark River (A Doc Ford Novel), by Randy Wayne White

The past comes disconcertingly alive for Doc Ford, in a series that continues to grow in popularity and acclaim.

Randy Wayne White's Ten Thousand Islands was "one of the most satisfying thrillers in recent memory" wrote the Chicago Tribune, and the starred review in Publishers Weekly said, "Of all the writers [in] the Florida mayhem boom, only White can claim to have created a series hero to match Hemingway's memorable outdoorsmen and John D. MacDonald's much-missed Travis McGee." And now White has created his most electrifying novel yet.

On a working vacation to Guava Key, marine biologist Doc Ford notices two female joggers who follow the same route at the same time every day. He can't help thinking how easy it would be for a predator to become aware of them, too. As it turns out, he isn't the only one. There seem to be more and more predators these days.

Forced to step in, Ford finds himself involved in a story of intrigue and revenge that becomes more dangerous with every turn-and some of them hit pretty close to home. Add to that a Bahamian relative he never knew he had, a letter leading to a treasure that may or may not exist, and some past history that becomes very alarmingly present, and his life has suddenly become very complicated. Not to mention the prospect of his death. . . .

Filled with crackling power and atmosphere, and some of the best suspense characters in fiction, Shark River is a triumph of storytelling.

007 and a half in the turtle grass
By Professor D. L. Hoffman
I've read all of Randy Wayne's storys dealing with the escapades of Doc (Marion-Why Marion, RWW?) Ford since I got hooked on "Sanibel Flats". As a marine biologist, myself, and having spent countless days in the Keys and the Caribbean islands, I immediately felt an empathy with this randy biologist Although my own life is not quite as exciting to say the least. Having sorely missed the exploits of Travis McGee, I was very fortunate to find a more than adequate replacement in Doc Ford. "Shark River" does not have as many twists and turns and violent confrontations evidenced in such past Ford exploits as "Mangrove Coast", but it is more than satisfying for a dyed in the wool fan like me. The characters spring to life-especially Tomlinson and Doc's long lost "sister". And finally we are privy to learn about Doc's "dark side", that is, what covert activities kept him busy prior to his "retirement" collecting anemones, baby tarpon, and crabs off Sanibel Island. The story has its typical Doc Ford twists and satisfying surprise ending. As in other Doc Ford stories, I read it in one reading. Alas, I have to wait another year for "the next installment". Bravo Randy! Bravo Doc!

Doc Ford rocks on The River
By John R. Linnell
Randy Wade White knows his stuff....about the ecology of Florida, the workings of the CIA...the swamp that Columbia has become and the life of those who live on or near the water in "God's Little Waiting Room." We learn a lot more about Doc's background in the CIA in this book as a well connected Washington insider, whose daughter he has saved from a hostage taking, uses Doc as bait to rid them both of a ruthless Columbian drug dealer whose brother has been turned into a paraplegic by Doc. We learn more about Tomlinson also, the self absorbed mystic who spends most of the book trying to put lead in his pencil in several humorous situations. I used to think that Carl Hiaasen was the king of this type of Florida novel. I now suspect we may have a new claimant to the throne. This book has action, intrigue, sex, information about the ecology of Florida and numerous other entertaining aspects that will make you glad you picked up this book. If this is your first experience with RWW and Doc Ford, I predict it will not be your last.

On the reservation, danger looms everywhere, rising out of fear and anger, deprivation and poverty. Fiery-haired Louise White Elk dreams of both belonging and escape, and of discovering love and freedom on her own terms. But she is a beautiful temptation for three men-each more dangerous than the next-who will do anything to possess her...

From Publishers Weekly
Earling follows the literary trail blazed by Louise Erdrich in her poignant if familiar debut novel, which explores life in the tiny town of Perma, Mont., through the adventures of the restless Louise White Elk as she struggles with a problematic passion for irresistible bad boy Baptiste Yellow Knife. The tempestuous duo's love-hate relationship is complicated by Charlie Kicking Woman, the local police officer who admires Louise from afar even as she breaks up his marriage. The other romantic subplots are less captivating - Louise's affair with the reservation's white real estate mogul, Harvey Stoner, is contrived and stilted, and Baptiste's attempts to arouse Louise's jealousy are even more forgettable. Narrated alternately by Louise, Baptiste and Charlie, the plot veers between hallucinatory, poetic descriptions of reservation life and tumultuous romantic encounters as Louise and Baptiste conduct their erotic duel, until the passions finally give way to murder. When Harvey decides to attack Baptiste, Louise and Charlie are left to make their own pivotal choices. Earling offers first-rate characterizations, and she does an equally fine job portraying tribal life in the Flatland Nation. The predictable and disorganized plot makes this book less memorable than it might have been, but there's little doubt that Earling has considerable potential.

From Library Journal
In this beautiful first novel, set on the Flathead Reservation of Montana in the 1940s, Earling traces the youth and young adulthood of Louise White Elk and the men who try to win her heart and soul. A red-headed, mixed-blood temptress, Louise always has a man or two, none of whom is any good for her. Throughout, a third-person narrative alternates with a first-person account by Charlie Kicking Woman, the police officer who tracked down Louise when she ran away repeatedly as a child but whose interest in the woman is less than professional. Louise is also entangled with Baptiste Yellow Knife, who adheres to the old ways and resists all contact with whites and authorities. The abject poverty is keenly felt, as is the pride that allows one to prevail and the resignation that keeps one from aspiring to more. This novel will stand proudly among its peers in Native American literature and should have strong appeal to fans of Louise Erdrich. Debbie Bogenschutz, Cincinnati State Technical & Community Coll.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* "When Louise White Elk was nine, Baptiste Yellow Knife blew a fine powder in her face and told her she would disappear." So begins a love story of uncommon depth and power, a love story that is as painful as it is transcendent, a love story in which the lovers, like Birkin and Ursula in Lawrence's Women in Love, are unwilling to diminish themselves in the act of joining together but are equally unable to turn away. Set in the years following World War II on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, Earling's superb first novel throws two indomitable characters together in a tightly circumscribed world and gives them free rein to bang into the furniture and each other. A fiery mix of tantalizing contradictions, Louise is a red-haired temptress who yearns to escape the reservation and to experience every kind of freedom on the menu, but she can't avoid her magnetic attraction to Yellow Knife, whose devotion to the old ways and whose shaman-like intensity threaten to shackle Louise even as they offer their own kind of liberation. As they spar with each other--and with Charlie Kicking Woman, a tribal police officer also under Louise's spell--the lovers face both threats and temptations from the white world outside the reservation. Coming-of-age novels set on reservations are a rich part of contemporary literature, of course, and Earling's effort fits securely into the tradition of Welch, Erdrich, and others, but it stands on its own just fine. The Lawrentian psychodrama that emerges from the Louise-Baptiste relationship gives the novel a richness that transcends the story's time and place but that, simultaneously, brings the larger theme of cultural clash into even sharper focus. Let's hope we hear much more from Earling, who is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation. Bill Ott

A story of triumph and sadness, of hope and despair
By E. B.
This touching, disturbing novel by Ms. Earling, a member of the Salish and Kootenai tribes of the Flathead reservation, is a poignant look at the life of the Native American of the 1940s. This was when Indian children were taken from their homes and families to attend schools where it appeared the primary interest was knocking the Indian out of them, even if, and it often did, take brute force and terrible humiliation. The heroine of this story, Louise White Elk was subjected to this forced education. Every chance she got she ran back home, only to be found and returned to one school or another. Finally to escape, she marries a man who loves her, but who carries the bitter and angry scars of this forced assimulation into the white culture, a culture he would die before accepting. He might be forced to bend but he will not break.
Louise is loved (desired) by three men. She is beaten and used, but she too possesses a will that cannot be broken this side of death.
I'm a native of western Montana and very familiar with the places Ms. Earling writes about, but for me it's not the place, but the story and this is some story. Eunice Boeve, author of Ride a Shadowed Trail

This is her first novel? Amazing!
By Amazon Customer
I read through a few of the reviews and was a bit surprised with the comment that Louise's relationship with Harvey was contrived among other things. I was completely absorbed in this novel and felt that it was an artfully told story, I would give it a 6 if possible. I grew up in that area, going to high school in Missoula. My parents live on the Flathead Reservation and my sister went to high school in St. Ignatius. When other high schoolers were taking French and Spanish, she was learning Salish. I am a very white skinned, blue eyed, freckled decendant of Northern Europeans. My father is a true, genuine cowboy and cattle rancher. This book pulled me in not only because of the amazing way Earling captured the sights and smells of my home, but because of the undercurrent of feeling between the peoples living on the reservation, whites, Indians and those who didn't belong to either group because they belonged to both. At first when I put the book down I felt unsatisfied. I wanted to know what happened to Hemaucus Three Dresses. I think Earling's point in leaving that a loose end was that she was just an Indian and therefore disposable and that probably no one would ever invest the time and energy into finding out what happened to her. If it was a white man who killed her, well, she was just a dirty Indian. If it was an Indian, well, just chalk it up to internal Indian justice. I wanted Louise to make better choices. I believe her choices were rooted in hunger, survival and a self-loathing fostered by the nuns of Mission. It is completely plausible that she ends up spending so much time with Harvey the white land developer because in him there is a little hope of change. There is no love on either side of this "romance" and I think that is why a reviewer felt it contrived. He was using her for his pleasure. She was using him for an occasional hot meal, a chance to briefly feel special and the tiniest sliver of a possibility that he might take her away from the reservation. Mostly she was resigned to the fact that nothing would improve for her. The two Indian men in the story, Charlie Kicking Woman and Baptiste Yellow Knife are struggling with the same demons in profoundly different ways. In the end they come to the same resolution I think. Charlie is a policeman, second class citizen among the other officers, someone trying to behave like a white man and be better than the other Indians. It is a lonely, hated place to be. Baptiste chooses to return to the old Indian ways, starting with refusing to speak English at school, resulting in being locked in a store-room by the nuns and mysteriously escaping. He drinks because he is told he can't. He becomes mean and scary, even to other Indians. Louise is a bit of a surprise and unpredictable. She seems resigned to a hard life but when it counts she's a fighter, and she fights HARD.

As far as the metaphores, I was constantly amazed at her ability to take incongruous words and put them together to create a picture that was completely understandable. She had me tasting colors and smelling songs. Amazing. She often used the opposite of what she was describing to illustrate the point. For example: Baptiste's mother's house becomes lighter and lighter the way a tarp gets darker as it gets wet. Completely opposite but what a visual that really expresses a gradual lightening.

I absolutely loved the book. I highly recomend it. (By the way, the magazine reviewer was wrong, there are 4 men interested in Louise. Two are Indian, two are white: Baptiste, Charlie, Harvey and Jules the cowboy). They each see something in her that draws them.

Marine Air, by Robert F. Dorr

The first fully illustrated oral history of the United States Marine Corps Air Force-the "Flying Leathernecks."

The U.S. Marines generally inspire thoughts of a peerless ground force that has always bravely answered America's call to arms. But the Marines also have an air arm with a tradition every bit as proud and legendary as the ground infantry they support. Now, military historian Robert F. Dorr presents the first fully--llustrated oral history of the Marine Air Wingand gives the "Flying Leathernecks" the recognition they deserve.

When America entered World War I in 1917, the Marine Air Wing had only thirty-five aviators. During World War II, it expanded to sixty-one squadrons--twenty with at least one flying ace--and over 10,000 pilots. Led by men like their top ace, Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, Marine planes ruled the air in the Pacific.

Marine Air is a long-overdue, illustrated history-from WWI to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Filled with the Flying Leathernecks' own words and packed with photographs of the "the few, the proud" of the skies, this is the story of their unwavering commitment to protecting their comrades on the ground-and to defending the country they have never let down-no matter what the odds.

Review
Some of the best stories of aerial combat [told] by the actual pilots. Think of Marines and you'll think of the ground forces - but their air arm is also legendary, and military historian Robert F. Dorr provides here the first illustrated oral history of the Marine Air Wing, which began in 1917 and became a major force during the Second World War. Any military collection will find it a 'must' addition, and many a public library holding will find it a popular lend. --Charleston Post and Courier

As a former Marine and combat vet, I owe my life to a couple of Marine pilots out there. This is an incredible and highly entertaining read for those interested in aerial combat...or Marine Corps history. These accounts put you right in the cockpit. Robert Dorr has done a good job. Very informative and well written. Well done. Semper Fi to my flying brothers out there and thanks for giving me an oppotunity to praise you in this manner. --By J. D. walker

Noted aviation historian Robert Dorr chronicles the air and air-to-ground combats of a variety of Marine aviators in this book from Berkley Caliber. Based in large part on interviews with over 70 pilots and aircrew, Dorr's book covers the whole sweep of Marine aviation from Grumman Wildcats to McDonnell F/A-18 Hornets. In the fifty years of air combat covered by Dorr, the Marines flew a variety of aircraft in harm's way - Wildcats, Corsairs, Skyraiders, helos, Skyknights, A-4s, F-4s, Intruders, you name it. Whatever your interest in Marine aviation, there's something for everyone in this book -dogfights, air-to-mud, rescue missions in early helos, etc. A few familiar names and tales crop up - John Bolt, John Cummings, etc. - but, by and large, the first-hand accounts are new and very interesting. The text is well-illustrated with over 100 black and white photographs. All in all, a good introduction to flying Leathernecks in action. --By Michael OConnor

About the Author
Robert F. Dorr is a military historian and aviation expert and the author of over a dozen books on military fighter planes, bombers, and aerial combat. He is the author of the Alpha Bravo Delta Guide to the U.S. Army. He lives and works in Oakton, Virginia, a suburb of Fairfax.

OUTSTANDING BOOK WITH ONLY A FEW FAULTS. ONE, IT'S SOMEWHAT LIMITED IN SCOPE AND TWO, IT TENDS TO JUMP AROUND. THAT SAID, JUST READING THE SECTION ON THE A-6 INTRUDER WAS WORTH THE PRICE. THE SKYRENE WHO WALKS YOU THROUGH WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO FLY THAT GREAT PLANE IS OUTSTANDING. THE BOOK BASICALLY GOES FROM WW II TO THE FIRST GULF WAR AND HAS SOME GOOD AND NEW INFORMATION FOR MOST OF US. FOR EXAMPLE, I WAS UNAWARE THAT MARINE CORSAIR UNITS WERE ALMOST SENT TO EUROPE IN WW II TO ATTACK THE GERMAN SUBMARINE PENS AT BREST AND THE V-1 AND BUZZBOMB SITES. I WAS AWARE GENERAL MARSHALL DID NOT WANT MARINES IN EUROPE AND SAID AS LONG AS HE WAS IN CHARGE "THEY'LL BE NO MARINES IN EUROPE". I ALWAYS ASSUMED IT WAS JUST TYPICAL ARMY FEAR OF THE MARINES OUTSHINING THEM AS THEY ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL, I WAS UNAWARE OF THE SPECIFICS OF THE AIR UNITS. ANYWAY, AS AN OLD GRUNT WHO, ALONG WITH MANY, OWES HIS LIFE SEVERAL TIMES TO MARINE CLOSE AIR SUPPORT PILOTS, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THOSE GUYS WERE INCREDIBLE AND AT MY VERY BEST I COULD NEVER HAVE DONE WHAT THEY DID. SEMPER FI GUYS AND GOD BLESS!

From Publishers Weekly
The latest tersely titled thriller by Koontz ( Strangers ; Lightning , etc.) displays the author's abilities at full throttle. A horror story with science fiction underpinnings, it concerns a brilliant, insane inventor, Theodore Shaddack, who uses the sleepy California town of Moonlight Cove as an outsize lab for a bizarre experiment that ultimately turns the community into a charnel house. He has devised a solution of microchips which, when injected into the (usually unwilling) subject, endows them with immense mental powers over their own bodies, leaving them, however, emotionally lobotomized. As a result, almost all the "New People" regress to animal form, to experience again primal sensationsand in animal form, they kill. The story is told from the points of view of four people who perceive that something horrible is happening in Moonlight Cove, and that if they do not act fast, it will happen to them. It is also related from the point of view of Sheriff Loman Watkins, himself a "New Person," but who retains enough moral sense to be disturbed by what is happening around him and in him. Despite some paper-thin characterizations and a predilection for the maudlin, Koontz's sense of pace and the dramatic are sure, and there are a number of memorable moments. This one should hit the bestseller list at a run. 200,000 first printing, $150,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild selection.

From Library Journal
Four people are the last hope of Moonlight Cove, because one by one the rest of the citizens are changinginto boogymen, werewolves, mythical creatures, or something entirely new. They are the New People, willing victims of a seductive experiment in chemically induced evolution. They can transform their bodies at will and eliminate unproductive emotions, like grief and compassion. In fact, the only instinct left to the New People is self-preservation, and their only emotion is fear. And they want the rest of humanity to join them. Popular author Koontz ( Watchers , Lighting ) has again delivered a gripping horror thriller with well-drawn characters and plenty of suspense. Literary Guild selection. A.M.B. Amantia, Population Crisis Committee Lib., Washington, D.C.

Review
"In his own masterful way, Koontz slowly unveils the escalating horror...breathtaking."

It goes like this: The breakers crash the snowy surf
By capt367272
It goes like this: The breakers crash the snowy surf, the Cyprus trees curl over the gently rolling hills that lead into the Valley which is bordered by the scant forest covered in the pearly fog as the scary creatures ululate their cries through the tiny coastal village. Did I mention that the moon is pearly also and that the evil creatures like to ululate? So much useless description, very little attention to characters. I found myself skipping paragraphs. Then I decided to skip the whole thing. But if you like your scary creatures to ululate under the pearly moon as they scamper through the pearly fog, this is the book for you.

I read a book on suspense which recommended a few authors: Cornell Woolrich, Robert Bloch and James Cain. Plus this guy. I loved the first three. Skip this, go buy books by the other authors.

Riveting, fully developed characters, and a chilling tale of man's relationship with machines, make this book one of the better sci fi books Koontz has done. I'm only a novice of his works but still have yet to read one that rivals Watchers
