When award-winning chef James Haller and his closest friends toasted his sixtieth birthday, he thought that their dream of spending time together in a beautiful house in Europe would remain just a dream. But a year and a half later, they arrived at a charming 17th-century chateau in the Loire Valley that would be their home for the next month.

Haller swore not to cook, but the local abundance of fresh foods, herbs, and wines soon had him preparing all the group's meals-and loving it. They breakfasted on oven-fresh croissants slathered with French butter, strolled endless fields of glorious sunflowers, feasted at delightful cafes, made day trips to Tours for antiques-and relished the spectacular dishes that Haller created from the simplest ingredients. Best of all, they made many new friends-while sharing priceless moments with old ones...

Featuring dozens of delicious recipes, Vie de France is a delightful testament to the joy of good friends, good food, and reaching for your wildest, most wonderful dreams.

This is a thoroughly entertaining and interesting account of the author's month in France. He and his friends had a great time, just as I did when I read it. His comments and observations make me want to rent the same house sometime. I re-lived the year I lived in a different part of France.

From School Library Journal
YA-Another in the list of Brown's wilderness/mysticism/ethos/survival books. This one takes readers through some of the most profound experiences of the old Apache of the title, who imparted to his grandson the wisdom expressed in the author's earlier titles. Going much deeper than nostalgia for a lost way of life, this work exhorts readers to eschew materialism and waste, and return to a simpler but more satisfying relationship with the fragile Earth. Grandfather is filled with visions and mystical phenomena as it relates the old man's search for the universal and sublime truths that will enable humankind to find harmony with nature.

On a scale from 1 to 10 I rate this one...11!
By A Customer
"On a scale from 1 to 10 I rate this one... 11!" is what my gf said, after having read Grandfather; something that for me sums up how I myself would rate this book.
"Grandfather" is a collection of stories of Tom Brown Jr's mentor; a mentor who besides teaching him about tracking and survival, taught him foremost about Spirit, and the laws of Spirit. It is through these stories that the reader becomes aware that much of what Grandfather taught Tom Brown Jr was knowledge and wisdom that he himself had to work at for years to accummulate; something that makes his achievement only the more admirable.
Stories that clearly illustrate Grandfathers' passion for finding and honouring The Truth; not a social 'manmade truth' but the truth regarding the nature of Spirit; to Grandfather the definitive truth; the same one that the White Man lost contact with so long ago.
In his quest for knowledge Grandfather repeatedly puts his own life on the line, something that I found very impressive, never foolishly though, but always in a way that illustrates great sobriety on his part and the courage to do what he deems is necessary to come to the greater knowledge and wisdom that he so passionately seeks.
Knowledge and wisdom that leads him from from the southwest to the jungles of the amazon and all the way back and up to alaska. Gets him stranded in the mountains in a snowstorm in Canada, nearly killed in Death Valley, in the suburbs of Chicago and much and much more.
All this is very impressive to me; a man accomplishing all that on his own in a hostile environment, he was a native american living outside the reservation after all, without any backup, not many who could accomplish that. But what impresses me the most is that despite the violence with which the White Man approached the Native Americans, never did this stop him from always respecting whoever crossed his path, be they red or white or black; which illustrates how sacred life and the heart was to Grandfather. And it is this respect that Grandfather shows continuously, to man and earth and everything part of this earth, and how this enables him to build a bridge between himself and those who cross his path, that fills me with hope for the future....
So in the end this collection of stories gave me far more then expected: HOPE! Something that many are in need of these days.
My advice? Buy it, read it and then... try to live it!

A must for your bookshelf!
By Kathleen A. White
KoKo would be knocking this book off the shelf, yowling, "Pay attention! You must have this!"
By no means does one find the typical list of simple, answer-apparent questions throughout this Quiz book. Dr. Headrick's academic background shines forth as he has designed a companion book which appeals to all levels of Cat Who... aficionados ~~ from the `light' readers to the most serious. With many different modalities of questions, ranging from easy, general questions to ones requiring close attention during reading, this companion book is great fun for all readers.
How well do you really know `The Women in Quill's Life'? The idiosyncrasies of KoKo and Yum Yum? What one would see if meandering through Pickax and Moose County? Through Junktown? Most importantly, the history of Qwill's life and all the continuing characters who changed his life's path?
You may consider yourself well-versed in your readings of The Cat Who ... books, but be prepared for surprises. After taking one quiz in this Quiz Book, you'll find yourself reading the next with much more attention and care.
The Cat Who Quiz Book is not designed to be a scholarly study of Lilian Jackson Braun's infamous series, but through Dr. Headrick's book, one does pay closer attention during readings. It's an absolute must to have on hand after reading a Cat Who ... book, challenging yourself to better your score than on the last one read. Also so makes one wish Dr. Headrick was the prof in your classroom, stimulating one's brain in the most entertaining way!
The Cat Who Quiz Book is definitely challenging, thought provoking and such great fun. A perfect `game' book for get togethers with fellow Cat Who ... readers or for a great solitary escape time. Yes, you may have to reread a Cat Who ... book to complete a quiz, but that's the best part. On your next read, be on the lookout for those salient factors .... the mystery continues as you see how well you do!
Highly recommended!!!!

I have been a fan of the Lilian Jackson Braun series for many years, and received this book as a gift a few weeks ago. I enjoyed the quizzes, as they were not of the typical quiz book variety. Each quiz appealed to the me as a reader of the series. My only regret is I did not buy this book for myself sooner. A great book to take on vacation...

Command refused to commit the forces required to achieve total victory in Afghanistan. Instead, they delegated responsibility for fighting the war's biggest battle-one that could have broken Al Qaeda and captured Osama bin Laden-to a hodge-podge of units thrown together at the last moment.

At dawn on March 2, 2002, America's first major battle of the 21st century began. Over 200 soldiers of the 101st Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions flew into Afghanistan's Shahikot valley-and into the mouth of a buzz saw. They were about to pay a bloody price for strategic, higher-level miscalculations that underestimated the enemy's strength and willingness to fight.

Now, award-winning journalist Sean Naylor, an eyewitness to the battle, details the failures of military intelligence and planning, and vividly portrays the astonishing heroism of these young, untested U.S. soldiers. Denied the extra infantry, artillery, and attack helicopters with which they trained to go to war, these troops nevertheless proved their worth in brutal combat and-along with the exceptional daring of a small team of U.S. commandos-prevented an American military disaster.

It includes in-person observations during the operation (Naylor was imbedded with the 101st Airborne Division troops who fought in the battle), and scores of after-the-fact interviews, many with sources who wouldn’t allow themselves to be identified. His two-year undertaking to bring those 17 days to life yields an extraordinarily detailed account of the fateful mission. While a few critics felt that some aspects of the book were unbalanced, all agreed that Naylor did a good job in portraying the drama, heroism, and blunders that defined Anaconda while raising broader issues of warfare and its ultimate purpose.

From Booklist
In March 2002, U.S. forces moved into the Shahikot Mountains, hoping to trap and eliminate a substantial number of Al Qaeda fighters. They were handicapped almost fatally by their own lack of numbers, substandard logistics support, the highest altitudes at which Americans had ever fought, and the frigid weather of the mountains. Victory eluded them, although considerable damage was done to the enemy; and disaster may have been averted by the actions of special operations teams drawn from Delta Force and Seal Team 6. These operatives put on a very convincing demonstration of how much of the future of warfare may lie in the hands of small bands of experts engaging the enemy by stealth, with heavy firepower on call, firepower that wasn't always available in Operation Anaconda. Prizewinning Army Times reporter Naylor has written the best full-scale history of Operation Anaconda to date. Roland Green

Best Insight into the current American wars
By QR6
Not a Good Day to Die is a must read for anyone who wants to understand what we should really be focusing on to change in our current military if we want to stay relevant in a future that will almost certainly be marked by uncertainty. I am a Reserve Officer who just returned from Iraq and I couldn't believe how many of the lessons I had highlighted in Naylor's book, were still relevant on the ground in Iraq. My son sent me a blog from an unknown author who I would love to thank because he sums up what I believe to be the seminal lesson from Not a Good Day to Die, and the key point we should focus on to improve our military in the future.

A brief discussion about the decisionmaking structure of U.S. land forces. The most remarkable examination of this topic is Sean Naylor's recent book on Operation Anaconda, an American effort in 2002 to trap and destroy a force of hundreds of al Qaeda warriors in a valley in Afghanistan. Naylor's book, Not a Good Day to Die, is far too detailed to come close to summarizing here. But two themes reappear throughout Naylor's narrative.

First, the American military has grown higher headquarters like weeds in rich soil. Meetings over Operation Anaconda, a single operation planned for three days and thought to be aimed against 200 enemy, involved absurd numbers of competing organizations -- and, therefore, competing operational styles and agendas. Here's a typical laundry list for a single meeting: "Representatives from K-Bar, the CIA, Task Force 11, CFLCC, the Coalition and Joint Civil-Military Operations Task Force, and Task Force Rakkasan had been invited." And this list is hardly a complete reflection of all the different headquarters involved in Anaconda. As Naylor summarizes: "For a battle that would involve perhaps 2,000 allied troops -- less than a brigade's worth -- in combat, CENTCOM had cobbled together a force that drew elements from eight countries, two U.S. Army divisions, two Special Forces groups, a hodgepodge of aviation units, and a variety of clandestine organizations." Each piece of that stew had its own leadership, with its own agenda and intent. A critical American military effort had become wildly and pointlessly complicated. Four-star generals reviewed plans down to the platoon level.

Second, the coordination of those many different elements and agendas meant that painfully negotiated plans became locked into place simply because they were painfully negotiated. After members of a Delta Force team pulled off the seemingly impossible feat of walking up the side of a mountain in the Afghan winter to get a firsthand look at the valley, operation leaders received reports that there were somewhere around 1000 enemy, not the 200 the American plans had called for -- and then they learned further that the enemy was not in the valley, where the plans put them, but were instead on the high ground around it. Leaders of the battle decided to go ahead with the plan as written, reluctant to throw out weeks of hard-fought staff work on the word of Lt. Col. Peter Blaber's Delta operators. The plans trumped reality, because the plans had come with political and institutional costs.

Finally, one of the ways that Army officers managed the problem of ignoring the Delta Force intelligence showing 1000 enemy on the high ground was to regard the special operators who delivered that intelligence as out-of-control and untrustworthy. Leaders ridiculed the Delta team reports, and "mocked the independent role that Blaber had carved out by calling him 'Peter the Great' and 'Colonel Kurtz.'" The enforcement of institutional orthodoxy allowed leaders to ignore realistic bad news. Today's U.S. Army in a nutshell, right there.

There's much more to Naylor's book, which is so far one of the very few critical pieces of insight into the current American wars. (The battle, by the way, went poorly.)

To summarize, then -- sorry about that -- a too-hierarchical, too-orthodox U.S. Army, and U.S. military in general, leans heavily on lumbering equipment, high technology, and major ground offensives against an enemy that relies on tactics that are often not even conventionally military in nature; we mass artillery against threatening letters and infrastructure sabotage. In equipment, doctrine, tactics, and leadership structure, we're organized for the wrong enemy, in ways that can't be easily or quickly changed.

Superb
By A reader
Mr. Naylor is a reporter with Army Times who has covered the military for many years. He displays an insider's understanding as to how military organizations plan and fight. This book is unique in the degree to which the author was able to get the participants to be interviewed; there are a great many details here you won't find anywhere else. He does a great job on the account of Anaconda, a large raid into a mountain stronghold in southeast Afghanistan, conducted in early 2002.

The author covers the planning for Anaconda, the infighting among different organizations, and the significant impact the Secretary of Defense's office had as the numbers of conventional forces were limited due to political considerations. Special operators, generals, infantrymen, apache gunship pilots, all have their voices heard. What happens when plans fall apart and soldiers have to pick up the pieces? It's all in here.

This is the best account of the Army post 9/11 that has been written, and it is highly unlikely you'll find one better anytime soon. A must read. If you have any interest in the military or national security, pick this up.

Started off slow but finished strong
By Gordon Ewasiuk
The book is broken into four sections: the leadup to the operation, the first contact, the ranger battle, then conclusion. The first section is about 180 pages and is a bit of snoozer. The author explains, what appears to be, every single aspect behind every decision made prior to Anaconda. He goes into excruciating detail about the "office politics" between the various military groups. At one point, it starts sounded like a soap opera as various loyalities and internal factions are explained. It was bad enough for me to skim a few pages. It feels like the author had to fill some pages and pad the book.

One thing that stuck out was how LONG the prep work for the operation took. The book starts off "in the first weeks of January." The operation kicked off on 2 March. That seems like a long time to this untrained observer.

I did like hearing about the local Delta operator and how he planned and ran the three recce teams. He was bold and daring.

Things start picking up during the second section, "Reaction to Contact." As the first troopers hit the ground, the author reeled me in with vivid details of landscape, battles, and the troopers. The insider report of the friendly-fire incidents boiled my blood. When the author talks about the Afghan trucks driving across the mountainside in the dark and WITHOUT lights, I was shocked. Descriptions of the landscape are detailed. At one point, I lost track of all the different units moving around.

The third section is the climax. It deals with the battle on Takur Ghar. That was the payoff. Once I reached that section, I couldn't put the book down. When the SEAL commander sent the first helo to an LZ on TOP of the mountain, I was stunned. The author communicates the troopers frustration with the poor communication clearly -- I actually got mad when the General Trebon took command of the battle on Takur Ghar. There are some details about that battle that didn't make it into the newspaper accounts I read. For that alone, it is worth the read. Gritty, gripping, and packed with suspense.

The author does great work explaining how the battle on the mountain unfolded and the actions of all the troopers. Reading how the SEALs dragged their wounded comrades down a mountain or how the second QRF had to scale a mountain with a 70 degree slope while wearing 100lbs of gear...wow. The Ranger commander should have gotten a couple of medals for his bravery.

The pictures in the book were brilliant. There are a couple from Takur Ghar that, when viewed after reading the corresponding section, are just stunning.

All in all, it was a good read, despite the first section.

Healer Lark Collinson hates the street dueling that is a way of life among the noble families on Celta--it was just such a skirmish that killed her Healer husband and left her a grieving widow. All it takes is one brief touch for Holm to know that Lark is his HeartMate, though wooing her will be his greatest challenge. For not only does she despise everything he represents, but the long-standing feud between their families has exploded into even greater violence. Their destiny has been revealed...but at what cost to their own hearts?

Owens' third romance set on the plant Celta, originally settled by Wiccans, brings together a healer and a warrior. Healer Lark Collinson, widowed when her husband got in the way of dueling great families, wants to move away from her father, the head of the Hawthorn family. He is set on dueling with the Hollys, who are known for their fighting prowess, and even though she hates violence, Lark is drawn to Holm Holly, the heir and an accomplished fighter. Holm, who did not discover that he had a HeartMate during the three rites of Passage he endured, finds that he has matured enough through the challenges he has faced to be worthy of his HeartMate, Lark, who is unaware that she has a HeartMate in this lifetime. Playful pet kittens add a little fun to this sexy story. Readers of Owens' earlier Celta titles, Heart Mate (2001) and Heart Thief [BKL Je 1 & 15 03], will enjoy revisiting this fantasy-like world filled with paranormal talents. Diana Tixier Herald

Heart Duel maintains the high standard
By A Customer
HEART DUAL, the third book in Ms. Owens Heart series, is definite keeper, from the beginning I was entranced with this book. I'd been waiting for Holm's story and I wasn't disappointed. I truly enjoyed her kittenfams, who are portrayed so vividly I half expect my cats to start talking in my head. What I found most appealing about HEARTDUEL is the inclusion of human frailties and foibles that I personally related to. Holm's character, which was introduced in Heart Mate as the arrogant and confident heir to a Great House shows us a softer more vulnerable side that reminded me of the insecurities we all hide. Most 1st born children will relate to Holm's struggle with the "perfect child" syndrome, I know I certainly did. Lark's efforts to maintain a civil relationship with her father while keeping her independence brought back vivid memories of my struggles as a young woman to establish myself. The love that these two manage to find against the odds of their feuding family made me feel warm. The surprise twist toward the end had me in tears and then cheering Ms. Owens for her choice of resolving the Romeo and Juliet type story she had crafted. Obviously HEARTDUAL spoke to me on a very personal level as both Holm and Lark struggled with emotional difficulties I too have battled with. The book will always have a place in my heart.

The third is the best so far!
By Monica186
A mistake many writers in the fantasy/romance genre make is to spend so much time describing place and circumstance that they forget that it is best left to the characters to tell the story. Time after time I have been disappointed by stories with one-dimensional characters who seem overwhelmed by their gadgets or by the mysterious powers surrounding them.
Robin D. Owens knows this and has done just the opposite. Her characters tell the story through their thoughts and words. The world of Celta seems familiar and not at all contrived as the reader is drawn into the story by appealing and multi-faceted characters.
When books are written as a series, many writers seem to be compelled to reiterate everything that happened in previous books during the first several pages. As a method for setting the tone for the rest of the book, this leaves a lot to be desired. It certainly doesn't draw the reader into the story. More likely, it puts the reader off if they haven't read the previous entries, or it bores those who have. Ms. Owens reintroduces characters from her previous books, but does so gradually and naturally, never interrupting the flow of the story.
Heart Duel is a wonderful story which, I believe, surpasses both HeartMate and Heart Thief. Lark is a healer, strong yet caring and gentle. Holm is a warrior with vulnerabilities and hidden pain. Neither of them are weak and each makes the other stronger. The story was told through them, as any great story is character driven. In this book the reader is given insights into the structure of the Families - not only Families of power, but Families of love.
I truly enjoyed this book. My only disappointment is that we don't get a chance to see Lark and Holm triumph together in their new life. I hope more of their story is told in future installments. Such multi-dimensional, multi-faceted characters will surely not be forgotten.

Robin and Her FamKitty shine brilliant in another Celta tale
By Deborah MacGillivray
I first became aware of Robin D. Owens in a writers chat. It was just after she had gained recognition for her first book HEARTMATE. Word of mouth was so good, my curiosity was tweaked. So, naturally, I dashed off to order a copy and read it. Rarely is a first book so full of heart, so brilliantly conceived. Generally, if it is, it falls into the Harper Lee Syndrome of being so perfect the writer cannot achieve that level ever again. So when I was asked to review Robin’s second book, I frankly feared being let down. Instead, I was blown away. She did not achieve that same wonderful magick of HEARTMATE…she surpassed it! HEART THIEF was just that, a complex tale of an outcast, a thief and the Judge whom falls in love with him. The KittyFams were such a draw. I love cats, and Robin gives the KittyFams such life and personalities to her telepathic kitties, not cutesy, but oh so heartwarming. Having so enjoyed her first two works, I was eagerly, but once more cautiously looking forward to the next in the Hearts of Celta series.
HEART DUEL, just does not measure up to the first two, it shines with such amazing emotion.
This time we are treated to two KittyFams, Meserv and Phyll, tom brothers, gifts from T’ash to his friend, Holm Holly (prominent character in the first two books as the heir to House of Holly) and Lark Collinson, a healer from the Houses of Heather and Hawthrone. A wee touch of Romeo and Juliet is the undercurrent to HEART DUEL as the Houses of Holly and Hawthorne are ancient enemies. Lark heals the arrogant, but gorgeous Holm Holly, a man she grew up with, and watched from a far. He was the handsome, brash warrior, she quiet women with a Flair for healing. Both have undergone the three passages and neither saw their Heartmate that set their Flairs free, so both assumed there would not be one for them. Lark married a commoner, also a healer, but he died three years before the tale opens. So it is shocking to Holm to recognize as she heals his wound, that Lark is his Heartmate. Winning her will not be easy. Neither family will welcome their bonding, especially as the long animosity is edging toward open war between the two families. But Holm will let nothing stop him from forming the Heartbond, not even Lark herself.
However, his resolve is tested when his mother is stabbed by a Hawthorne youth, the blade carrying a poison that nearly kills her. As the feud escalates, so does Holm’s determination to win his Heartmate. Only Lark sees the situation as hopeless. Thus, Holm must fashion his Heartgift to win her love.
People who love HEARTMATE and HEART THIEF…will be thrilled with this next entry in the Celta series. Long may Robin D. Owen’s thrill us with her very special talent.

From Publishers Weekly
No doubt Keys has a fascinating story to tell—raised by a single mother, she's a classically trained, New York born-and-bred neo-soulster with two multiplatinum albums and five Grammys to her name—but she merely hints at it in this gathering of poems and lyrics. With their themes of loneliness, confusion, wonder and desire, most of Keys's free-verse poems could be the cris de coeur of any American 20-something: "Sometimes I feel/ like I don't belong anywhere/ And it's going to take so long/ for me to get somewhere/ Sometimes I feel so heavy-hearted/ but I can't explain/ cause I'm so guarded." But other poems hint at her world travels, her budding sense of social justice and her concerns about stardom ("When gone is the glory/ When gone is the shine/ Is gone the whole/ Of your fortune and pride?"). Nearly half of the book consists of lyrics from her two albums, Songs in A Minor and The Diary of Alicia Keys; while they make a nice complement to the poems, the words feel a bit flat without the blaxploitation beat of "Heartburn," say, or the impassioned vocal delivery of "Fallin.' " For the Keys completist, however, this will be a compelling book of rock ephemera.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Keys has sold millions of copies of her CDs and has won multiple Grammy Awards. Here, she shares the lyrics from these discs, as well as a collection of poems from her journals and notebooks. After several of the poems, she offers readers glimpses of her mindset and inspiration for her writings. Sadly, these poems read like what they are–journal entries from a young woman–and they don't have great insight or clever wordplay. (There's no "moon/June" here, but there is "cry/die" and "cry/goodbye" and "cry/fly.") Even her song lyrics, so powerful when accompanied with lush piano arrangements, come across as banal when unadorned with instrumentation. However, both their creator and their subject matter will give these simple selections immense appeal with a teen audience. The writer talks about insecurities, personal growth, loneliness, and love–good, bad, long-distance, and unrequited. These topics are the stuff of creative writing projects. Like Ashanti's Foolish/Unfoolish (Hyperion, 2002), Keys's poems will attract her fans and perhaps encourage them to explore poetry.–Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

Chase Von, The Last Panthers Review of Tears For Water
By Chase von
As some one who writes poetry and also song lyrics and more, I was awaiting the arrival of this book pretty anxiously. I also really enjoyed it! Being a fan of Alecia Keys, I have to applaud her for having the heart to share this other side of herself with the world.

And unlike some of the other reviewers here, I took into account that in the inside of the book jacket, it states that this is a collection of thoughts she had written down that she previously didn't want to share with anyone, to include her closest confidants. I think some of this read like thoughts, some of it read like song lyrics, and some of it read like poetry. As for it being adolescent, I did see that in parts but what I took away from it is how she has had to deal with her life in the beginning of her career and how it is currently. (And we all have to remember when she hit the big time she was still quite young). Who can say aside from her, how much of that made up the contents of this book?

One of the pieces I liked most was "No Room For Religion", it as well as several other pieces show that she has a deep concern for what is really transpiring in the world. That is also reflected in "Cosmopolitan Woman" and various other places in this book as well. The other thing that pours through is her loneliness and her isolation and her inability to trust people because of what ever thier true intentions might actually be.

I see a woman who is still becoming, a child that has had to deal with an adult world and a gifted soul who has had to very often, be her own best friend. I think people looking for fantastic poetry itself, might be disappointed to lay facts on the line, but people who have admired her, and who call themselves fans, will truly appreciate hearing her voice when she isn't singing...

The one we all have...

The one that is really who we are...

And few are brave enough to drop on the world at large...

When the raving fans leave and the curtains are drawn, and the spot lights have been turned down...

The one that mesmerized you with her world acclaimed skills still has to look in the mirror and realize, she might be famous, but she is still human, with the needs we all have as human beings...

She's shared that, and I applaud her for letting her fans, most of which are young, know that she too has her doubts, fears and insecurities to deal with as well... But she isn't letting that stop her...

Continue to bless all who are willing to recieve Golden Child
Sincerely,
Chase Von

An Intimate Look
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Many have enjoyed the lyrical stylings of R&B songbird Alicia Keys, making her a Diamond Disc recording artist. Reaching such an accomplishment in the music industry, an artist has earned the love and attention of a large fan base. In return, Alicia has given those fans an intimate look at her innermost thoughts and feelings through her poetry in TEARS FOR WATER.

The intimate collection displays her feelings of loneliness and confusion on her road to stardom, and her feelings against social injustice, something that she has witnessed firsthand and read about in history books. She also writes of her world travels, places that her voice has taken her and the beauty she has discovered while there. After certain selections Alicia has notes giving her motivation for the written piece, which I found engaging.

I enjoyed the collection because it gave me a closer, more endearing look at the person and not just the artist. I was disappointed in the collection because it did not hold as much depth as her musical lyrics, which is what made me a fan in the first place. I expected her poetry to touch me as her songs have, but they fell short. I felt that she only scratched the surface of what she is really capable of producing, which is why I will continue to support her endeavors.

My Sister, My Sister!
By Mark A. Hitchcock
My Sister, My Sister!

You called me out by name.
You drew me in with your sweet refrain.

I realized not only was I asleep
I was in a coma and in very deep.

Your words from Heaven pierced my soul!
Your tears for water made me whole.

Truth that lay so dormant in me,
You brought to the surface so I could see.

My life was a big counterfeit mistake.
`til you whispered for me to awake.

Your tears for water are not in vain.
Your joys, your sorrow, your deepest pains.

The human heart can only hold
A portion of God, everything else is overflow.

Your songs, your poems are all from grace
To show the world His tender face.

Oh sweet smells before Gods throne
Come from your heart, His holy home!

With much, much, love, affection, & gratitude
The brother of your heart.
--Mark Hitchcock

From the Inside Flap
"The best thriller writer going."
ATLANTIC MONTHLY
Randall Draw couldn't say no to a Prince, could he? So he was headed to Russia -- the Prince's brother-in-law had his heart set on riding in the Olympics, and it seemed a jealous Russian woman had her heart set on killing him if he did.
Leaving behind his well-bred horses and high-born girlfriend, Randall went to Moscow, little expecting that the sabotage and murder he'd find would pale in comparison to the unspeakable terror that followed....

One of the most unassuming fiction heroes that I've found.
By Shirley Schwartz
Randall Drew is not the sort of person that comes to mind when you imagine someone who sets out to almost single-handidly stop a terrorist plot. He's quiet, unassuming, bespectacled and prone to chesty illnesses. He's also an event rider (steeplechaser) who has attained some notoriety in England until he was forced to stop racing with the introduction of a sight-restriction rule. Since Randall can't see at all without his glasses, the British Racing Society says that he can't race anymore. Randall is selected though by royalty to pursue an inquiry behind "the iron curtain". This secret exposes him to all sorts of danger in communist Russia. This book handles the Cold War situation quite well. I have read a number of Dick Francis books, and I think this one was one of the best I've read. Tony Britton does a wonderful job of reading the book and that helped set the stage for the espionage and danger.

Interesting relic of the cold war
By Martha E. Nelson
I do like Dick Francis novels, and I do admit, as many other reviewers have said, that there is a certain predictability to the plots of many of them. What I find myself looking for, in mancy cases, is the philosophy beyond the plot. In this case, the plot is about an attempt to sabotage the Moscow Olympics. The plot holds together well, but what I enjoyed about this book is that it is a glimpse of the end of cold war Russia (of course from a British perspective) and it is an attempt to think about the personal decisions that humans make which shape of our lives and about personal freedom.
I think Francis does a good job with these rather weighty themes, within the framework of the mystery/thriller genre that he has perfected over time.
