The long-awaited songbook of poems and lyrics, penned by one of the most acclaimed music artists of her time, Alicia Keys, is finally here for her throngs of fans. When she burst onto the scene, Alicia's years of intensive classical piano study and musical schooling paid off with over 12 million copies of her two albums sold, a huge international fan base, and an arena tour with female musical contemporaries, Beyoncé and Missy Elliot. Her talent has been rewarded with nine Grammy Awards (including Best New Artist), four American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, a Billboard Award, and two Soul Train Awards.
Though Alicia has been very vocal through her career, there were always "delicate thoughts" that she never before imagined she'd share with anyone else-until now. Alicia Keys opens the journals and notebooks that she has kept throughout her life, documenting her growth as a person, a woman, and an artist, and reveals her heart to her fans in return for all the love they have shown to her and her music.

From Publishers Weekly
No doubt Keys has a fascinating story to tell—raised by a single mother, she's a classically trained, New York born-and-bred neo-soulster with two multiplatinum albums and five Grammys to her name—but she merely hints at it in this gathering of poems and lyrics. With their themes of loneliness, confusion, wonder and desire, most of Keys's free-verse poems could be the cris de coeur of any American 20-something: "Sometimes I feel/ like I don't belong anywhere/ And it's going to take so long/ for me to get somewhere/ Sometimes I feel so heavy-hearted/ but I can't explain/ cause I'm so guarded." But other poems hint at her world travels, her budding sense of social justice and her concerns about stardom ("When gone is the glory/ When gone is the shine/ Is gone the whole/ Of your fortune and pride?"). Nearly half of the book consists of lyrics from her two albums, Songs in A Minor and The Diary of Alicia Keys; while they make a nice complement to the poems, the words feel a bit flat without the blaxploitation beat of "Heartburn," say, or the impassioned vocal delivery of "Fallin.' " For the Keys completist, however, this will be a compelling book of rock ephemera.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Keys has sold millions of copies of her CDs and has won multiple Grammy Awards. Here, she shares the lyrics from these discs, as well as a collection of poems from her journals and notebooks. After several of the poems, she offers readers glimpses of her mindset and inspiration for her writings. Sadly, these poems read like what they are–journal entries from a young woman–and they don't have great insight or clever wordplay. (There's no "moon/June" here, but there is "cry/die" and "cry/goodbye" and "cry/fly.") Even her song lyrics, so powerful when accompanied with lush piano arrangements, come across as banal when unadorned with instrumentation. However, both their creator and their subject matter will give these simple selections immense appeal with a teen audience. The writer talks about insecurities, personal growth, loneliness, and love–good, bad, long-distance, and unrequited. These topics are the stuff of creative writing projects. Like Ashanti's Foolish/Unfoolish (Hyperion, 2002), Keys's poems will attract her fans and perhaps encourage them to explore poetry.–Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

Chase Von, The Last Panthers Review of Tears For Water
By Chase von
As some one who writes poetry and also song lyrics and more, I was awaiting the arrival of this book pretty anxiously. I also really enjoyed it! Being a fan of Alecia Keys, I have to applaud her for having the heart to share this other side of herself with the world.
And unlike some of the other reviewers here, I took into account that in the inside of the book jacket, it states that this is a collection of thoughts she had written down that she previously didn't want to share with anyone, to include her closest confidants. I think some of this read like thoughts, some of it read like song lyrics, and some of it read like poetry. As for it being adolescent, I did see that in parts but what I took away from it is how she has had to deal with her life in the beginning of her career and how it is currently. (And we all have to remember when she hit the big time she was still quite young). Who can say aside from her, how much of that made up the contents of this book?
One of the pieces I liked most was "No Room For Religion", it as well as several other pieces show that she has a deep concern for what is really transpiring in the world. That is also reflected in "Cosmopolitan Woman" and various other places in this book as well. The other thing that pours through is her loneliness and her isolation and her inability to trust people because of what ever thier true intentions might actually be.
I see a woman who is still becoming, a child that has had to deal with an adult world and a gifted soul who has had to very often, be her own best friend. I think people looking for fantastic poetry itself, might be disappointed to lay facts on the line, but people who have admired her, and who call themselves fans, will truly appreciate hearing her voice when she isn't singing...
The one we all have...
The one that is really who we are...
And few are brave enough to drop on the world at large...
When the raving fans leave and the curtains are drawn, and the spot lights have been turned down...
The one that mesmerized you with her world acclaimed skills still has to look in the mirror and realize, she might be famous, but she is still human, with the needs we all have as human beings...
She's shared that, and I applaud her for letting her fans, most of which are young, know that she too has her doubts, fears and insecurities to deal with as well... But she isn't letting that stop her...
Continue to bless all who are willing to recieve Golden Child
Sincerely,
Chase Von

An Intimate Look
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Many have enjoyed the lyrical stylings of R&B songbird Alicia Keys, making her a Diamond Disc recording artist. Reaching such an accomplishment in the music industry, an artist has earned the love and attention of a large fan base. In return, Alicia has given those fans an intimate look at her innermost thoughts and feelings through her poetry in TEARS FOR WATER.
The intimate collection displays her feelings of loneliness and confusion on her road to stardom, and her feelings against social injustice, something that she has witnessed firsthand and read about in history books. She also writes of her world travels, places that her voice has taken her and the beauty she has discovered while there. After certain selections Alicia has notes giving her motivation for the written piece, which I found engaging.
I enjoyed the collection because it gave me a closer, more endearing look at the person and not just the artist. I was disappointed in the collection because it did not hold as much depth as her musical lyrics, which is what made me a fan in the first place. I expected her poetry to touch me as her songs have, but they fell short. I felt that she only scratched the surface of what she is really capable of producing, which is why I will continue to support her endeavors.

My Sister, My Sister!
By Mark A. Hitchcock
My Sister, My Sister!
You called me out by name.
You drew me in with your sweet refrain.
I realized not only was I asleep
I was in a coma and in very deep.
Your words from Heaven pierced my soul!
Your tears for water made me whole.
Truth that lay so dormant in me,
You brought to the surface so I could see.
My life was a big counterfeit mistake.
`til you whispered for me to awake.
Your tears for water are not in vain.
Your joys, your sorrow, your deepest pains.
The human heart can only hold
A portion of God, everything else is overflow.
Your songs, your poems are all from grace
To show the world His tender face.
Oh sweet smells before Gods throne
Come from your heart, His holy home!
With much, much, love, affection, & gratitude
The brother of your heart.
