"The best thriller writer going."
Atlantic Monthly
Daniel Roke didn't want to leave his Australian stud farm to help look into an English horse-doping scandal. But there he was in England, taking over invetsigative duties vacated by a racing journalist who had died in a suspicious auto accident. And soon enough, Daniel learned that men who would give drugs to horses would do much worse to human beings....

This is one of my two or three favorite Dick Francis' novels
By clifford
You have to have read a couple of Dick Francis' novels before you understand the author. In a way he stands alone, for as far as I can tell he has not overtly used other writers styles and no contemporary writer has used Francis as a primary influence. All of Francis' books follow a similar arc, from one to the next, you know exactly what you will get. But in a strange way, this is not bothersome, instead it is like revisiting an old familiar and comfortable place.

Francis' books are not in a series format. He only uses the same character for a second time once. In his first ten or so books, he uses a particular jockey to set his story around. And later he finds people of different professions that have racing interests to center stories around. This book, "For Kicks" is from the transitional phase, the late 60's, early 70's. It tells the story of Daniel Roke, a trainer from Australia who is hired to uncover a doping ring that is not being detected through traditional meathods. Its a pretty simple story, and like all of Francis' work it is refreshingly understated. With James Patterson and Patricia Cornwells mamoth body counts and terrorising serial killers, or end of the world scenarios ala Tom Clancy and too many others influencing todays reading lists, its amazing to see how much quiet tension builds up in Francis' stories.

I would highly recommend Francis to anyone. Its a fun world to live in for a while, where all of England revolves around the racing world... every other profesion comes second. I remember how much I loathed the idea of Francis before I first read him and I laugh now at my perception of what his books would be about. I mean, how can one author base a huge series of mysteries on racing horses? Dick Francis does so quite well.

A good quick read.
By Glenn McLeod
For Kicks by Dick Francis. Pocket Books 1965
Good quick read.
In this, one of Francis' earlier books, Daniel Roke, and Australian, is hired by the Earl of October to try and discover how someone is fixing races by drugging the winners with an untraceable drug.. To do this he masquerades as a stable boy and shifts from horse yard to horse yard until he discovers who is doing it and finally how it is being done. In doing so, Daniel places himself and Elinor, the young daughter of the Earl of October, at considerable risk. In a final confrontation with the bad guys Daniel overcomes his adversaries but is thrown in jail accused of murder to await the return of the Earl of October.
Like most of Francis' protagonists, Daniel is youngish, handsome, honest beyond measure and quite capable at a number of things useful to someone working with horses. A sub plot to the main story is the wrongful accusation of Daniel by the older Earl's daughter of sexual abuse and his growing involvement with the younger.
To the seasoned Francis reader, this book does not have too much depth but like all Francis mysteries, a joy to read.

Worth rereading
By Book lover -Philadelphia
I agree completely with the other reviewers. This is a terrific suspense novel that happens to give insight into British racing, the class system and each and every character. While I have read all the Dick Francis books, this is the one that I go back to and reread every year or so. Its quiet, understated tone still builds up to suspense and excitement.

His earlier books (like this one) are the best, as far as I am concerned, and the most recent one or two are not worth reading.

p.s. On a visit to England, I took great joy in going to Newmarket and watching the horses out for practice early in the morning. It felt as if I was in the middle of a Dick Francis book. My husband and daughter, also fans, felt the same.

A splendid British historical
By A Customer
Even though her parents were killed in the London bombings and her ex-husband absconded with most of her money Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton is determined to look after her tenants and the villagers of Sitting Marsh. As the lady of the Manor, she feels it is her duty to set an example to the people who look her for guidance during the perilous times of WW II.
When one of her new tenants, artist Basel Thorncraft, is murdered she is told that the local constables are not handling the case. There are rumors in the village of a German spy staying in the area waiting for a pick-up by his masters. Elizabeth thinks that the spy killed the artist but there are so many new faces in the village that she doesn't have a clue as to who the perpetrator is. She starts her own investigation, an action that has always put her in danger in previous homicide investigations.
PAINT BY MURDER is a splendid British historical cozy that gives the reader a feel of what life was like in the small English towns during W.W.II. The heroine is always torn between acting like a proper English lady and giving in to the impulses that always get her in dangerous situations. Kate Kingsbury's Manor House mysteries are simply delightful and her latest work is no exception.

Best of the Series
By Louis M. Perdue
This, the fifth in the Manor House series of mysteries, is the best thus far. In this entry, the murder of one of Elizabeth's tenants is not the main focus. More time is spent on the dramas going on in her life as well as the lives of the other inhabitants of fictional Sitting Marsh. I enjoyed this book for that very reason - Kate Kingsbury tends to write better serial fiction than actual mysteries. Usually the mystery parts of her books are quite easy to figure out and I prefer reading about the progress in the various relationships. All in all, this is a quick and light read that makes for a pleasant Sunday afternoon.

Teamwork At Last
By Island River Scribe
This is the 5th book in the Manor House series, which takes place in WWII England circa 1942 – 1944. I would not consider this a standalone novel as so much character and societal development has taken place previously. And this story begins only a few months after the conclusion of the previous.

In the prior novel, “Dig Deep for Murder,” the Beckham cottage on the manor had been the focus of several incidents. Fred Beckham had died of a heart attack in the cottage and then his body was mutilated in order to cover up a crime of a different sort. Before the tale was finished, the villain had attacked Lady Elizabeth in the cottage and left her to die.

Now Lady Elizabeth has found another body in the Beckham cottage, the new tenant, an artist by the name of Basil Thorncroft. Thorncroft has been stabbed to death through the heart, with no clues as to the identity of the murderer. And, thus, the first of the three plot threads is established.

The second plot thread, while truly secondary to the other two, is the continuing story of Polly, Lady Elizabeth’s assistant, and her relationship with the American pilot, Sam Cutter. In the last novel, Sam, by way of his own anger, wrecked a Jeep, causing massive injuries to his face. The psychological damage is even more massive and that aspect is part of this novel.

The other major plot thread is the relationship between Lady Elizabeth and Major Earl Monroe, a friendship that is really so much more for each of them but as yet un-confessed to the other. Then circumstances surrounding the murder serve as catalyst for those un-confessed feelings to begin their path toward a public declaration.

In this regard, feelings that had just been barely touched on or alluded to erupt into full acknowledgment in both Elizabeth’s internal monologues and Earl’s dialog. And it is in Elizabeth’s internal monologues that Kingsbury’s research and insight into the culture of the British nobility and the culture of that era shines. Elizabeth examines her feelings for Earl, acknowledges to herself that she loves the man and still decides that she must choose what is right in the long run rather than the temporary high of succumbing to the wants of the present.

The scenes between Lady Elizabeth and Earl are charged with honest emotion and the author cuts to the quick in their depth of understanding. Kingsbury paints a heart-rending clash between what they feel for each other and what they should do about what they feel, which, in the culture of the time, is nothing since Earl is married. But their friendship survives and even deepens as their sense of honor and their guiding principles remain steady.

By the end of the novel, the murderer is revealed and caught by the teamwork of Elizabeth and Earl. We are caught up on the activities of Violet (the cook), Martin (the senile butler), Sadie (the maid) and Marlene (Polly’s sister). And we are introduced to Douglas McNally, whose presence and purpose in Sitting Marsh is definitely the prelude to at least one more novel, if not more.

From Publishers Weekly
Rarely have the crimes of a serial murderer captured the imagination and fears of the entire country as did the unsolved "Zodiac" killings in the Bay Area in the 1970s. Close to the investigators and long obsessed with the case, Graysmith reputedly knows more about the killer than anyone else. His popular 1986 Zodiac offered such a thorough account that even a lead investigator used it as a reference. In that book, , seasoned true-crime author Graysmith identified the most likely suspect though only under a pseudonym, Richard Starr, hoping the book would trigger a reader to come forward with incontrovertible evidence. The suspect died in 1992, and in this follow-up to Zodiac, Graysmith now identifies "Starr" by his real name, Arthur Leigh Allen, a terrifying sociopath and convicted pedophile whom police long considered the prime suspect. Culled from official records and new interviews conducted in recent years, the latest book excavates the still burgeoning 30-year history of investigations into the Zodiac murders six confirmed and dozens of others that the killer claimed to have committed, and who spawned a score of copycat killers, most recently a 15-year-old from Kobe, Japan. The Zodiac case is convoluted at its heart and though Graysmith's evidence against Allen plays solidly, the narrative often gives way to unexpected segues and jumps in time. To keep track of this case that has more facets than a diamond, readers will need a scorecard. Photos and other supporting material in the book were not seen by PW.

From Booklist
Graysmith was employed at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1968, when the serial killer known as Zodiac began methodically brutalizing and murdering random victims across California. Zodiac, who was something of an egomaniac, communicated with authorities via the Chronicle. In addition to gloating over the inability of law enforcement to capture him, he would often describe how he intended to kill his next victim or would recount in chilling detail the last moments of someone he had savagely slain. At least 37 gruesome murders were attributed to him in the state of California; however, competing investigations (because the murders happened in several different counties) and other mishaps led to his consistent evasion of authorities. In this excellent study of the case, Graysmith provides never-before-published photos, a complete reproduction of the Zodiac letters, and a scary and disturbing account of pure evil. Libraries with a readership interested in true-crime tales will definitely want to stock up on this probable best-seller from the author of the widely read Zodiac (1986), which was his first book on the subject. Now readers can learn all that he has learned in investigating the case further, including the chief suspect. Kathleen Hughes

A Great Book!
By mcw
Zodiac Unmasked is an extraordinarily-detailed, highly entertaining book. I recommend it to any person with a strong interest in true crime. If you really want to get wrapped up in the excitement of this case, this is a very good place to start.

Graysmith does a great job of fleshing out prime Zodiac suspect Arthur Leigh Allen. Allen is just too bizarre and complicated to be a fictional character. He's big and scary, athletic and powerfully-strong. Though sometimes prone to outbursts or physical acts toward others (he was known to throw acquaintances to the ground, knee to the chest before they knew what happened) he often appeared gentle and well-mannered. He had an odd assortment of friends and acquaintances and many unusual interests and hobbies. After both his parents died, he still chose to live in a creepy basement rather than the main floor of the house he inherited.

Though extremely intelligent and talented, Allen never seemed to reach his potential and ultimately ended up working in menial jobs. A diabetic who refused to alter his lifestyle (he was fond of Coors Beer), he later developed serious complications which caused him to lose his mobility and his eyesight.

But even in the earlier stages of his disease, Allen would have experienced diminished mobility, vision loss and coordination which could explain Zodiac's sudden disappearance from the scene. His extremely unpleasant experience being locked up at Atascadero would also explain his refusal to ever reveal his identity as Zodiac. He would not want to risk prison, especially with his ill health. He would deny that he was Zodiac up until his death at 58 from diabetes-related heart disease.

I thoroughly disagree with those here who say this book is poorly-written. And I strongly take issue with the idea that Graysmith's theory that Allen is Zodiac has now been "proven" wrong by DNA evidence.

No one, not even the SFPD, has ever come forward with evidence "proving" anything. The questionable "DNA fingerprint" said to be developed by SFPD DNA lab personnel in 2002 (6 years after their earlier, inconclusive testing) does not exonerate Arthur Leigh Allen. And, other than this SFPD analysis, there is no "other evidence" that would allow this case to reach a conclusion. The careful wording, "seems to clear Zodiac suspect" and "may" are used in press reports. Nothing definite there. Arthur Leigh Allen remains a viable suspect.

SFPD's story for publication is that "genetic traces" were found due to "powerful new DNA technology" and that "trace amounts of saliva" were found under a stamp. I would feel a lot better about this information if someone without a vested interest in the outcome of this thing, (in other words, not SFPD) had done the testing and had done it prior to SFPD's handling of the evidence. Anyone who has worked in law enforcement as I have for years (having come from generations of law enforcement) is aware of the enormous egos many cops have, especially when involved in a high profile case like this. From what I have seen over the years, I would not be at all surprised if lab personnel were persuaded to make "findings," or to overstate the significance of actual findings, that would result in this case pointing in a direction more favorable to SFPD, making them the solvers and discrediting someone they clearly saw as a busybody nobody paperboy horning in on their territory.

True DNA testing is an extraordinary crime-solving tool, but the human factor always has to be considered. There is no longer a pressing need to determine who Zodiac is or was, as he's not actively killing. This is now mostly about the public's curiosity, but also a battle of the egos. Sad to say, many people, cops included, don't play fair. Many SF cops supported Graysmith's work, but others, and most likely SF upper echelon law enforcement, didn't care for this situation at all for P.R. reasons.

As for people who feel Graysmith was unqualified, I say this: you have to be rather specially-talented to work as a political cartoonist for a paper like the Chronicle. It requires artistic ability, political savvy and, yes, an intelligence that may qualify him to actually be smart enough to figure a few things out. Homicide detectives, on the other hand, are rarely master detectives. A promotion to Homicide is a sought-after political perk mostly reserved for those well-connected in law enforcement. It is not awarded to the best and brightest. Homicide cops are usually cops of ordinary ability with some political clout. From the time I was a kid, I have heard over and over, "He got promoted to detective and he's on his way down to headquarters to pick up a bag of brains."

I'm not saying cops are worse than anyone else. I'm just saying they're ordinary people, and ordinary people cheat, manipulate and alter the truth all the time to further a conclusion they're more happy with.

Arthur Leigh Allen still looks good for these crimes, and until someone other than SFPD comes up with something provable and not subject to dispute, I will continue to consider this fascinating, incredibly-complicated, highly-intelligent man to be the prime suspect in the Zodiac murders. I would strongly encourage people who want to read this book to just do it and ignore the negative criticisms here. Like another writer here, I am really wondering if those who criticized the book actually read it. I would also recommend the movie, though it doesn't go into detail about Allen, it is well-done and well worth the six bucks.

Flabby but Fascinating
By Roger Lathbury
_Zodiac Unmasked_ would have been twice the book at half the length. Graysmith could have eliminated repetition, told the story in fewer chapters (the breaks seem arbitrary, and there are too many of them), eliminated supererogatory data about copycat crimes, and finally developed a few insufficiently explored topics: why did murdering lose its allure for Allen? What was the psychological nexus between the Zodiac's fixations on cryptography and science and killing?

Perhaps this is to ask for a profundity beyond the author's capabilities. Graysmith exhibits no sense of irony or moral outrage--striking deficiencies in a such a book as this.

In his defense and at his own level, however, he does answer some objections other reviewers have raised about apparently conflicting DNA evidence and varying witness identifications. Unlike Patricia Cornwall's explanation of the Jack the Ripper case, Graysmith's solution seems plausible. If the prose is flaccid, at least it is not sensationalized. There should be less of it, though.

Good follow-up to the movie "Zodiac"...
By William E. Adams
I am amazed at the hostility against this book demonstrated by several reviewers. I found Graysmith's case against Leigh Allen to be persuasive. I bought this one right after seeing the new "Zodiac" film, which I also liked. With that background, or a background from having read Graysmith's "Zodiac" book from many years ago, "Unmasked" is a worthy read. I would not advise anyone without familiarity of the case to pick this up first, however. It is a complicated story that stretches from 1966 to the 1990's and beyond, and has a cast of scores of cops and suspects and victims and their family members. If you liked the movie, you probably don't need to read "Zodiac." Try "Unmasked" instead. How some readers can think that Arthur Leigh Allen is NOT the most likely killer is beyond me, but mysteries and conspiracies attract us precisely because we all think we can do better than the cops and reporters in coming up with a solution.

An Action Novel That Asks Spiritual Questions
By Alan L. Chase
Last year, I wrote that I had just been introduced to the writings of Jack Higgins, and had enjoyed reading his work, "Without Mercy." I have just gone back to the Higgins buffet line for a second helping, this time reading "The Wrath of God." Higgins writes in the action genre with a sparse style that reminds me a bit of Hemingway. It has the feel of a spaghetti Western that would be filmed with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.

In "The Wrath of God," Higgins creates bleak and arid landscapes - externally, located in a parched Mexican backwater - and internally, located in the desiccated souls of his characters. The characters come to life as memorably flawed human beings. The protagonist - but hardly a hero - is Emmett Keogh, an embittered former IRA assassin who can no longer remember how many people he has called or why he killed them. Circumstances throw him in conflict and in partnership with Van Horne and Janos. Van Horne is a defrocked priest turned back robber, and Janos is an ex-patriot Hungarian doing business rapaciously in post-Civil War Mexico of the 1920's.

Though an action novel through and through, with a film of film noir to it, "The Wrath of God," consistently poses spiritual questions: "Can the reprobate find forgiveness?" Is it incongruous for an avowed atheist to hunger for a spiritual connection?" "Can a deadened and benumbed soul be brought back to life?"

Higgins has a long list of novels to his credit. I expect to continue sampling them for the foreseeable future.

Exciting adventure story from Jack Higgins
By T O'Brien
The Wrath of God is an enjoyable story from Jack Higgins that is well worth a read. In 1920s Mexico, three men are brought together under different circumstances and blackmailed into completing a mission for a Mexican army officer. The three men are Keogh, a former IRA assasin, Van Horne, a priest who also robs banks, and Janos, an overweight businessman who stops at nothing to better himself. The mission they receive is to capture a man, dead or alive, Tomas de la Plata, who has gone renegade and is reigning terror on a small part of northern Mexico. I really enjoyed this book. All the characters are fairly well-developed and you get to know them and their motivations by the end. Not Higgins' best book, but his fans will definitely enjoy this western action.

If you like the book, try and find a copy of the movie that was based on Higgins' novel. It stars Robert Mitchum, Frank Langella, Victor Buono, Ken Hutchison, and Rita Hayworth in her last movie. The movie differs from the book in certain parts, but just like the novel, it is highly enjoyable, and full of great characters and plenty of action. Check out The Wrath of God!

Fund your Future: Winning Strategies for Managing your Mutual Funds and, by Julie Stav, Lisa Rojany Buccieri

Financial planner and broker Julie Stav first took the American and Spanish markets by storm with the bestseller and PBS Series Get Your Share. She spoke specifically to women, showing them how to strike it rich in the stock market. Now she speaks to everyone-men and women, young and old, new and seasoned investor alike-sharing her wisdom on how to make long-term financial dreams come true.

One of the keys to achieving successful financial goals is in mutual funds and 401(k)s. And while most people do participate in such investment plans, they may not be participating profitably. In this smart, sensible and down-to-earth guide, Julie Stav shows investors and prospective investors how to get the most out of their mutual funds and 401(k) plans. She explains how to set financial goals-whether they are to retire with financial dignity, send the kids to college, or purchase a new home-and achieve them.

But most of all, Julie Stav's fun, conversational, and easy-to-understand approach takes the fear out of investing and puts the roadmap to riches within reach.

Introduction Have you ever thought about your financial goals and how much money you would need to accomplish your dreams? What are those dreams, anyway? Is it to send your children to college, to buy a house, to help your parents financially, to be able to stop working for a living?

Are you putting away enough money for the future? How is your 401(k) performing? How do you choose among the investment choices you are given? Is it better to buy individual stocks or mutual funds? Or should you invest in an IRA or in a two-year CD? And by the way, what the heck is an IRA or a mutual fund, anyway? Confusing? You bet!

I used to think about my financial future and get so overwhelmed that I would end up fantasizing that I won the lottery. With the jackpot in mind, I would let my mind drift, and I would list the many ways that I would spend the money: a new house, a trip around the world, a shoe collection that would make Imelda Marcos jealous. I'd bargain with my fairy godmother, promising to donate half my winnings to her favorite charity if she would just be so kind as to give me that lottery. Then, when the inevitable happened and some other (clearly less worthy) soul got the winning ticket, I would be back to where I started, wondering how in the heck I was going to manage to fund my future. Can you relate?

What's the difference between people with no money worries and you? What's the difference between you and people who can afford to send their kids to college, pay for their lavish weddings, and still live out their own retirement dreams? Okay, maybe some of them inherited millions from Great-Grandpa Moneypenny, but the majority were probably once like you. They worked hard for their money, too, putting in all the hours, attending all the meetings, dealing with all the crazy demands, and working all those weekends. And they also probably walked around with that nagging little voice in their head questioning the stability of their financial future.

The real difference between them and you is only this: They set financial goals and committed themselves to an investment course that would enable them to reach those goals. Bottom line: They took control of their financial future. And you can, too. You don't need to hire some expensive, big-shot financial planner. The truth is, there is no one who has as much vested in the outcome of your financial planning as you do. So it makes sense that you should be in control of your money. Who else knows what is important to you, how much money you need, and how much risk you're willing to take to reach your goals?

If you're like a lot of people who blindly follow the recommendations of a financial advisor or flashy money guru without taking the time to learn the basics and keep abreast of your investment choices, at some point or another, you're bound to find yourself up the proverbial creek, paddling madly to get a grasp on your finances. But as long as you have taken the time to learn where you want to go with your money, you should have no trouble funding your future and living out your dreams. It's simply a matter of evaluating your personal circumstances, figuring out your goals, assessing your investment temperament, and choosing the right investment options.

After that scary-sounding list of to-dos, some of you might be getting a little intimidated right about now. Numbers were never your "thing," and the thought of burying yourself in a sea of numbers or investment terms feels as exciting as a visit to the dentist. Why can't these experts just speak English? Why can't they lighten up with all those secret agent spy codes-401(k), 403(b), W-4, IRA? Why does it have to be so confusing?

I used to be intimidated by financial and stock market lingo, too. Fancy terms and big numbers made my head spin. Following the unwritten rule that "girls are good with words, boys are good with numbers," I took pride in my flowery essays while my brother got As in algebra. Well, guess what? Money is green; it's neither blue nor pink.

When I really buckled down and tackled the stock market and mutual funds, I realized that we really don't have much use for all those fancy terms and numbers anyway. A calculator, a magnifying glass (why they make those numbers so small is probably part of the plot to intimidate us), and a solid determination to turn gibberish into serious cash is all we need to begin to see our money multiply, even while we sleep. Talk about being financially powerful! In my first book, Get Your Share, I tried to educate and motivate anyone who wished to participate in the stock market but who didn't know where to begin. We started with the very basic principles of what a stock is and why and how a company issues shares in order to raise money to expand its business. Through humor, analogies, and just plain talk, we studied the state of the market in general to determine the most advantageous moment to invest in a stock. We looked for a hot sector, a hot industry, and the hottest companies within that industry that potentially have what it takes to be the biggest and most profitable companies of tomorrow.

We were like race car drivers: We knew where we wanted to go and made sure we had high-performance individual stocks to get us there. We looked under the hood to confirm that our car had the horsepower to outperform the tough competition. We made sure all systems were go, and when the time was right, we stepped on the gas at full throttle, fueled by the anticipation of success and the thrill of the race. Sure, there was some risk involved, but that was part of the excitement-and the potential gains made it all worth it.

But some of us don't want to be race car drivers, especially when the track suddenly veers off a cliff. It's a lot of work to stay on the road. You must always be ready for the unexpected. Decisions need to be made quickly, and if you make a mistake, you can get hurt-as anyone who spun out of control in the high-tech crash of 2000 will recall. High performance comes with high maintenance.

Car racing is not for the faint of heart and neither is playing the stock market. It takes discipline and hard work to choose the best stock, buy at the right time, and know when to cut losses or cash in profits.

Many investors enjoy the daily work and get a rush watching their stocks perform. And the stock market is not just for the affluent or high-powered money brokers. Nor do you need a degree in economics. In Get Your Share, I showed readers that we all can benefit from the stock market-even so far as to invest on-line with no minimum outlay. With as little as twenty dollars, we can open a brokerage account and begin trading, applying the same sound principles the bigwigs in fancy offices and designer suits use with billions of dollars. Or we can form investment clubs, where fun and finance mix as well as chocolate and peanut butter.

But I know that many of you still feel left out in the cold. You wish you could have access to the potential gains that individual stock ownership can provide, but careers, family commitments, busy lifestyles, aversion to risk, or perhaps just lack of interest have kept you from getting involved in the stock market. You want to go places, but you don't want the high-speed race.

Well, let me put your mind at ease. In Fund Your Future, I will show you how you can arrive, refreshed and relaxed, at your financial destination by letting others do the driving for you in a car built for comfort, endurance, and fuel efficiency. I will show you how to profit by investing in the stock market through the use of mutual funds. Mutual funds constitute a powerful basket of money collected from regular people like us and invested by the mutual fund company, which then buys and sells individual stocks on our behalf. With mutual funds, we get to be the passengers. Mutual fund managers do what we don't want to do. They watch our money on a daily basis and make the necessary adjustments to our accounts to stay on course. We just need to know how to pick the mutual fund that is going our way, taking the route we want to take, and going at the speed we want to go.

And speaking of choices, many employers offer 401(k) plans. A 401(k) is a company-sponsored, pretax retirement plan. Lots of us have access to incredible returns through mutual funds in the retirement programs our employers offer, and yet we don't have a clue as to how to profit from them. In this book, I am going to teach you how to work that money hard by making the right choices within your 401(k) plan as well.

But before we fasten our seat belts, we have to take a look at your starting point. We have to evaluate your current financial position in order to chart the best course. After all, there are several lanes on the road to success. Then we need to make sure we know what your destination is, so we can set specific financial goals. Whether you are planning for retirement, looking to buy a new home, seeking to resolve credit card debt, or starting a college fund for your kids, we need to determine how much money you are going to need. Once we know where you are going, using your time frame and tolerance for risk as the starting point, I will help you make the best investment choices. If you don't know a stock from a bond and get baffled when you try to balance your checkbook, don't worry. What I'm about to teach you is not complicated. And it is never too late to learn.

I used to be like many of you. I thought I could largely ignore my financial situation until tomorrow, or next weekend, or whenever I could manage to sit down and figure it all out. But then I drove into a pothole. The pothole came in the form of a divorce that left me a single mom. Money was tight. I felt completely responsible for my young son's future, and I didn't want to rely on someone else's resources for our financial well-being. For the first time in my life, I began to balance my checkbook. Every penny counted.

One day, my sister-in-law told me about a book about money, written by a woman who explained investments in a way everyone could understand. Out of sheer necessit...

get your share: the everyday woman's guide to stocks
By maricela garibay
I too am a hispanic woman. I was quite intimidated by stocks and expecially that scary stock page in the newspaper. I could not believe it. I am a college graduate and a bank employee and here I am completely baffled by investments. I work in a bank. But I caught the last 15 minutes of her PBS special and was captivated as to how simply she explained it without being condisending. I needed someone to explain how to take control of my own finances and all of those dummy books were not as helpful as I had hoped. I truly felt like a dummy!! I especially liked the road lane analogy. Because now I know in what lane and what speed to go. Even though I am 27 and the recommended/investing age starts at 25. I am confident that my retirement will be smoother than most of today's retirees. I thank you very much Julie, you improved my life by allowing me to understand it more clearly. Thanks again. If you are ever in Chicago, look me up. I owe you a cup of Starbucks mochaccino or something!!

BEST FINANCIAL PLANNING BOOK OUT THERE!
By A Customer
Wow! Julie Stav is really a financial writer for our times. She speaks in clear language and provides a special (and easy!) system for you to figure out how to plan for retirement, save for a college fund, or even just get the most out of your 401(k). My favorite part was the exercise she had us go through to find "hidden assets" that I didn't even know I had! I would recommend this to anyone who is numbers shy but who knows that it is time to take their financial future into their own hands!

I finished the book, but it's not a great book
By M. C. Crammer
My mother lived in England during World War II (married a GI), and I'm a history major, so I know a far amount about this period, but I don't think the author does. It sounds like she threw in a few tidbits and thought that was enough, but I thought she got a fair amount wrong. As to the mystery itself, it was obvious to me about half way through the book what was going on -- so obvious that I thought it had to be a red herring. It wasn't.
Still -- this was a pleasant enough book to read, and it held my interest reasonably well. It has a certain charm. I'm told that the other series by this author is better -- I hope so -- I just ordered some books in that series (before I'd read this book). This was simply not the kind of work you'd expect from someone who has published so much -- I wonder if it is an early work that got published after later work was successfully published.

Entertaining romantic mystery set in WW2 England
By Silver Springer
This is the fourth installment of Kate Kingsbury's Manor House series set in World War II England. Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh is a 31 year old divorcee who lives in the family manor house in the quiet village of Sitting Marsh. She is scraping by since her former husband gambled her money away but life must go on and appearances must be kept up.
As part of the war effort, she has given some of her land over to victory gardens for the villagers. During weeding of one of the neglected plots, a body is unearthed. Since the victim is one of her tenants, Lady Elizabeth is bound to find out what happened since the incompetent retired constables seem to have no interest in doing so. Along the way she enlists the help of Earl, an American Air Force officer billeted in one wing of the Mansion, who provides the romantic interest. Thrown in for good measure are side plots of solving petty thievery of food, and an accident and love interest involving Elizabeth's 16 year old assistant. What I enjoyed the most, was seeing life in an English village during wartime, where people go about their daily lives despite rationing, blackouts and loved ones off to war.
This book is an example of an old-fashioned English "cozy" mystery where the mystery is solved without undue bloodshed in a civilized way. An easy read and entertaining story.

Super fun...

Love this zany aristocrats and her busy ways to solve village mysteries. The setting of WWII has been an interesting change of genre.

Better than Da Vinci and more appropriate for the times
By Tyler S. Ferguson
Knowing that you have to read in order to write, I haven't read a Dale Brown book in awhile and reading Wings of Fire, I forgot how much I enjoy his work. Mr. Brown's writing is superb and his knowledge of military hardware and political history is endless. His command of military structure and world events that he weaves into his narration has no equal. Wings of Fire is the kind of novel that takes you into the thick of things in Egypt and Libya. Step aside Tom Clancy for no one does this type of adventure better than Dale Brown.

I find that I have to go out and get his next book to see if he brings the beautiful president of Egypt back into his story. The two things I like best about the book are the action and the settings. Mr. Brown has the uncanny ability to shape and weave a character into a plot that seamlessly holds your interest as you turn page after page. I usually find his books too short, even though the publisher would usually have him cut the pages.

Mr. Brown has written a book that is hard to put down. He also weaves current events such as the rise of Islam and the Islamic Brotherhood into his stories that help give us a better perspective on world issues.

I find books like this far more refreshing than the Da Vinci Code with its secrets and made up plots. A great read.

As usual - it's a wild, wild ride.....
By John R. Linnell
I have read all of Dale Brown's fourteen novels and, with one exception, if you buy in to his premise that has developed over time, of a private US company modifying B-52 aircraft and developing others into a frightening air armada and then flying them against other countries without US approval, then you are going to enjoy this one as well.
From The Flight of the Old Dog to Wings on Fire has been a long and hazardous trip for Gen. Patrick McClanahan (USAF Ret.)and many others that served with him throughout the various campaigns.
In this book, Skymasters has been retained by some unnamed oil producers to "protect their interests" from the quite mad King of Lybia ( a successor to Quadaffi. All the King and his henchmen want to do is steal a few billion dollars and get out of Dodge. However when he starts by murdering the President of Egypt, he sets in motion a series of events that do not work out quite as he had hoped. The non-Arabic wife of the murdered president takes her husbands murder personally and embarks on her own plans for revenge. These get wrapped up with McClanahan and his Nightstalkers whose mission to Lybia has become somewhat undone and he finds himself rescued by Egyption forces after their ship is sunk by Lybia. However, not all of the forces are rescued and some fall into the hands of the Lybians, including McClanahan's wife, Wendy. McClanahan wants his wife and men back which Brown blends with the desires of the murdered President's widow and the rest is a typical air war pot boiler that is enjoyable to read, but a bit difficult to swallow in places.
If this is your first Brown book, you may find this hard going in places as a fair number of assumptions are made by the author that the reader knows more about his characters than the book reveals. That said, if it is not your first Brown book and you enjoyed the others, you will like this one as well. A sequel is clearly set up in the conclusion and the possibilities it raises are very interesting indeed. Buckle your seat belts.......
