An amazing book by an amazing lady
By Amazon Customer
After reading prior negative feedback on this book, I was compelled to write this review. Are Sonja's powers real? Judge for yourself. I went to her seminar in Long Beach, California, concerned because my 9yr old red-tail boa had not eaten in almost 10 months. She was losing weight and two vets had no idea or solution to the problem, but both were approaching concern about malnutrition. I was lucky enough to be one of the people invited on the stage at Sonja's seminar to ask my question. Sonja's tuned in and after a moment simply said "Have you been doing major renovations in your house where you have moved her from her usual room to another room - because she said she doesn't like that at all? And have you changed the color of the floor - she said it used to be blue and really wants to have that back if possible?". Indeed, 10 months prior, we completely renovated our kitchen and moved our boa and her enclosure into the living room. The original tile in the kitchen was blue/grey and is now cream. Even though the kitchen was finished, we never thought to move her enclosure back into the kitchen. I asked Sonja "if we move her back immediately, will she start eating again". The answer was a simple "yes".
That night we arrived home, moved the enclosure back into the kitchen and fed our boa her usual jumbo rat. After refusing to eat every two weeks for 10 months, she ate it immediately.
For you skeptics out there, that's a tough one to explain away... Regardless, our problem was solved - a problem two vets were unable to solve.

Fascinating read- but not for everyone
By A Customer
Sonja Fitzpatrick's book is likely to be a fascinating read for people who: 1.) Are animal lovers. 2.) Enjoy wathching "The Pet Psychic" show on Animal Planet. 3.) Are at least somewhat open to the legitimacy of interspeces communication. If reading about paranormal phenomena causes you to become insulted, disturbed, offended, or hypertensive, this book is not for you.
I found this to be a book of interesting contrasts. There are mind-boggling tales of psychic surgery being done with the aid of colored laser lights and angel guides. There is also a lot of practical, no-nonsense, down-to-earth advice about being a responsible pet parent. If such advice were only followed, much animal and human suffering could be avoided.

Sonya is Real!
By Holly Wade
While some people enjoy trying to discredit Sonya Fitzpatrick's TV show and books, I can easily say I know she is for real and really enjoyed this book! I am purchasing it for the second time as a gift to a fellow pet lover and have no doubts about whether the recipient will enjoy and appreciate the book. Sonya's weekly show on The Animal Planet is testimony to the reality of her gift and reading this book is like talking to her directly about some of her most interesting cases. I just wish she could meet and speak with my cats! Don't listen to the naysayers, you will definitely enjoy this book!

From Publishers Weekly
The narrator of Francis's 26th mystery is Tony Beach, a young widower who fights his grief by keeping busy at his wine shop and by socializing. Eventually he teams up with private detective Gerard McGregor to find the hijackers of several trucks of spirits; the pair then take on a case involving the adulteration of whiskey and wine at a cafe. In rapid order the cafe's steward is brutally murdered, and Tony and Gerard just miss being killed. Tony's severest test occurs at the "stunning climax of what may be judged the best of Francis's bestsellers so far; it's a corker," PW commented.

One of Francis' best books
By David J. Gannon
Dick Francis reminds me of a master craftsman of say fine furniture. His quality and style are such that, though all his pieces are different, they nevertheless bear the mark of his unique style and craftsmanship. Once in a while you'll come across a piece that's so unique that at first you're not absolutely sure it's one of his but a very short inspection convinces you that, yes, as odd as this piece may be, it's his.
That's a long way of alluding to the fact that Francis' books tend to be highly formulaic. For the most part you know what you are getting before you even open the cover. The formula consists of a highly independent, iconoclastic, extremely self-reliant protagonist who, for reasons he doesn't fathom, has become the center of a storm that, before everything has played out, will involve him in intrigue, murder and at least one act of horrific violence aimed at him personally. There will be some sort of at least marginal if not central theme of horse racing and a specific theme to the book-precious gems, photography or, in the case of Proof, the wine business.
Proof is a bit of a departure form the formula. The horrific violence is right up front in the form of a ghastly automobile accident. Tony Beach, the protagonist of this accident is present to experience it though he emerges unscathed. The accident does, however, bring him into contact with a private investigator. Their shared experience leads them to get ot know one another and the investigator, realizing Tony has some skills he needs, drags him into one of his cases. Thus Tony is an involved party to, but not the focus of the intrigue of this novel.
Moreover, Tony is not your typical Francis protagonist. Recently widowed, Tony is trying to modulate grief within the context of his own insecurities of not having lived up to the rough outdoorsman-horse fancier image of his very renowned father.
The end result is a Francis novel minus the usual comfort level of the formula. While it can be a risk for an author to diverge from his comfort zone, Francis handles it here with aplomb. Francis is one of the greatest thriller novelists ever. The result is one of his best novels ever. That's not a bad combination!
This is a great read both for the Francis fan as well as the casual suspense-thriller reader.

You Won't Need Any More to Be a Dick Francis Fan!
By L. Martin
PROOF is a terrific story about wine merchant Tony Beach who seems to stumble into one tragic situation after another. He agrees to cater a party for the horseracing elite, and watches as hit men reek havoc on the party. Now he's caught in the middle of a terrifying mystery that begins with counterfeit wine and continues on to murder. He has to dig deep within to continue to have the courage to find out who and why this is happening.

Dick Francis is a great writer of mysteries that always revolve around horseracing life. Most of his stories are based in England and steeple chasing (not the type of horseracing we're used to here in the United States). They are interesting and educational if you know nothing about this sport. Francis does not write tales as intense as some of the American authors do, but they are definitely worth the time to read. My father got me hooked on Dick Francis and his tales of murder and mayhem, and this author will have his books read for many years. They are timeless!

Not Classic Dick Francis Work
By Amazon Customer
Dick Francis and his wife Mary wrote as a team, and as time went on that team appeared to include their son Felix, who took over the Dick Francis brand in the early 2000s, when his mother had died and father got too old to write. Up until the mid-90s most of the books were written in a very distinct style: a strong focus on the horse jumping world, beautiful spare prose, page turning plots, and detective-like main characters with similar methods of operation. However, in the 1980s, another style entered into some of the books and has continued since Felix took over the franchise. The plots take much longer to develop. The sentences are decidedly much longer. There is no rhythm to the prose whatsoever. And the horse-racing world, while there, recedes well into the distance. Proof is one of these second types of books. I can fall asleep at night after reading a page and a half, where with the earlier books, I would be awake until four in the morning unable to put the book down. I can't say it's a poorly written book, because it reads like any number of other authors I could name. But if you are looking for the classic Dick Francis page turning, spare prose, racing world driven book, pass this one by.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Edgar-winner Ellis takes some big chances in his fourth book (after 2004's Jury of One), and he pulls them off in grand style. The Chicago trial lawyer branches out from his previous legal thrillers into a minefield of world terrorism and misplaced family loyalties, writing not only in the present tense but working backward from the death of his lead character, author Allison Pagone, who ostensibly kills herself after getting tangled up in a terrorist plot through her lover, a lawyer whom she's suspected of murdering. Despite the inherent difficulties of his time device (each chapter runs forward in normal time), Ellis manages to create a large amount of suspense and curiosity about Pagone, mostly by having us see her involvement in plots and crimes through the eyes of a dedicated, level-headed FBI agent named Jane McCoy. There's enough high-level corruption to keep several investigative agencies busy, and some wonderfully mordant scenes of the underbellies of law and government in action. This is another impressive performance from a writer who expands his ambition and artistry from book to book

Tough Start but Nice Recovery
By Benjamin Thomas
This book is very hard to describe, much less evaluate. In essence, it is a legal thriller involving murder, terrorists, government intrigue, FBI operations, and courtroom drama. But Mr Ellis decided to tell the tale in a unique manner: backwards. He begins the book at the end of the story and every scene in the entire novel takes place one or two days before what you just read. Now, I am normally not a person who goes in for gimmics. Too often authors like to prove how smart they are by fooling the reader with a gimmic of some kind. However, I had high hopes for this one (I knew about the backwards thing before I ever began to read) because of the author's first published novel, "Line of Vision", which is one of the finest legal thrillers I've ever read.

I really struggled through the first third of this book. Most stories build up the plot and develop the characters in a logical progression, allowing the reader to absorb each new element one at a time. But here, since we are starting at the end, we have to see how all of the characters end up. We read about a suicide by a character but have no idea at the time who she is and why we should care. It's confusing to say the least. And to add to the confusion, the author frequently uses flashbacks of what the character is thinking...thoughts from their past...which we will read about in upcoming chapters...wow.

But then, suprisingly, it started to jell. But the time I was half way through the book, I knew who the main players were and what their motivations were. Now I wanted to know how events got to be the way they were. I'm sure that's how the author was approaching the whole book. The ending (beginning?) was quite good and went a long way in overcoming my initial objections to the "gimmic." I will admit to going back and re-reading the first 20-30 pages to see those events from the different perspective of knowing the whole story. That provided good closure for me. I would definitely classify this work as "smart" fiction, as the writing itself is well done, and obviously every aspect of the plot is well engineered. Overall, I am both happy to have read it and glad that it is behind me. I give the first half of the book 3 stars and the last half 5 stars...rounding out to 4.

Frustrating read

I found this book very frustrating due to it starting at the end and going backwards to the beginning. It took me a while to get into and only started appreciating this order towards the end of the book.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in Egypt in 1821, Chase's romp of a romance possesses a fine sense of time and place. Solving the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphics has been Daphne Pembroke's lifelong passion, one she has kept secret from everyone except her brother, Miles, who fronts as the hieroglyphics expert of the family. (Daphne's disapproving late husband believed that "intellectual endeavors put too great a strain on the inferior female brain.") When robbers steal a papyrus from her Cairo home that may lead to a vast fortune and kidnap Miles as well, Daphne knows the crooks have taken her brother so he can decipher the hieroglyphics. To find Miles before his captors realize he's clueless, she needs muscle in the form of hunky Rupert Carsington (a secondary character from Miss Wonderful, the previous book in the series), whom she springs from a local jail. Tracking the kidnappers takes Daphne, Rupert and their entourage down the Nile, where they face sandstorms, snakes and other perils. Comic relief comes in the form of a mongoose named Marigold. Though the book offers a fascinating glimpse into the workings of ancient Egypt, Rupert and Daphne's relationship, and the trials and errors thereof, remain the heart of the story.

From Booklist
Egypt in 1821 is not a safe place for foreigners. So when her brother, Miles, disappears, Daphne Pembroke immediately goes to the British Consulate for help. What Daphne gets is Rupert Carsington. At first Daphne is quite vexed with the idea of being saddled with this cheerful blockhead, but she soon realizes that since she is clever, all she really needs is a big, strong man who will follow orders. As Daphne and Rupert set out in search of Miles, and a missing papyrus that may hold the key to a pharaoh's long-lost tomb, Daphne begins to suspect that she may have underestimated not only Rupert's intelligence but also her own susceptibility to his devilish charms. A bookish, sharp-tongued heroine with a passion for hieroglyphics discovers an all-together different kind of passion in this supremely satisfying and thoroughly romantic tale. Chase's subtly nuanced characters and deftly plotted story come together brilliantly, and her polished writing is imbued with a wicked wit. John Charles

I NEVER give five stars. This book, however, deserves that courtesy.
By lwd
Because such a rating is an aberration for me, I feel compelled to explain my reasoning.

First star - The hero has a healthy ego. He's not brooding, wounded, possessive or insecure. Instead, he is lusty (read this as constantly horny as hell) brave, has a keen sense of compassion and honesty, a wonderful sense of humor and the only fear he shows is for others. His respect, admiration and attraction for the heroine was a pleasure to read, and a wonderful twist. (Subtract this star if you need an alpha male who can only find his salvation through the love of a good woman).

Second star - The heroine is intelligent, steadfast, and vulnerable. Like most young women of her era, she was taught that normal sexual desires were wrong, intelligence in females was unnatural, and passion toward virtually anything considered a masculine endeavor was unattractive. Despite her background, she grows with the challenges she faces, overcomes her vulnerability, and she becomes who she was meant to be. (Subtract this star if you want a heroine who seems to be out of character for her generation, or turns into a blithering idiot once she falls in love)

Third star - Storyline. Yup, this novel has an actual plot, a beginning, a middle and an end. All the threads are neatly woven, you are not left hanging with a need to read the next installment. While other stories are available to read within the family of the hero (Lord Perfect, Miss Wonderful), this book is a stand-a-lone. (Subtract this star if you enjoy waiting months or years to find out how a story ends)

Fourth star - The romance is wonderful. The sex is as it should be. Fun, sensual, enthralling and it does not dominate the story. It is never unsettling, it never feels wrong. Descriptions of a kiss are just as vivid as the actual act, and written with such incredible -nice- passion, that it tingles the heart, not just the libido. Although the scenes were actually hot, there was an innocence to them that is normally missing in romance novels. You can honestly like these people, and want them to have the joy they physically find in each other. (Subtract this star if you are only reading this genre for sexual content, or prefer bodice ripping and pseudo rape to genuine romance)

Fifth star - Overall satisfaction. The story contains true adventure, really nasty villains, quick wit, heroic actions by both hero and heroine, character growth without the people behaving outside their own personalities, beautifully written landscapes, good secondary characters, true love, a good finish. This is a book you would enjoy reading a second and third time, a book you would happily recommend to a friend, and a book you would not feel embarrassed about if read by your husband or significant other. (Subtract this star if you believe romance novels are not -real- literature, and you believe The Da Vinci Code is. Yes, I will admit that I too would prefer a book cover that does not scream Romance Novel to fellow passengers on a plane, but genre snobbishness was beaten into me as a child, and I'm trying to overcome it. Besides, I really didn't like the Da Vinci Code.)

Yes, I was reminded of The Mummy. I was also reminded of Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters (another favorite novel). All had a brave hero, a spunky and intelligent heroine, Egypt of the past and wonderful adventure. All three are fresh, all three have their own stamp of originality, and all three are HIGHLY recommended.

She's the Brain, He's the Muscle--Impossible as it Seems, They're Perfect for Each Other
By April
Daphne Pembroke has the brains in her family, only her husband discouraged her studies and most people wouldn't believe she could actually be the scholar of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs that she is... so she is happy to let her brother pretend to be the scholar. A widow, now free to accompany her brother to Egypt, she is in her element until her brother is kidnapped. The only man free at the Consulate who may be able to help her find her brother is Rupert Carsington, the fourth son of the Earl of Hargate, a constant scapegrace who had just been thrown in jail with a riot threatening between foreigners and the local authorities. Daphne, steeling herself to do whatever she needs to do, heads to the jail to grease the palms that will let him out.

Rupert is an unusual hero. He's handsome and strong and brave and aristocratic--nothing unusual in that! But he's on the guileless, reckless, heedless side and is perhaps a bit lazy and too easy-going to bother to live up to his background and education. In short, he has no problem with appearing to be a total blockhead (although he's not), who is simple in his desires (beautiful women, preferably naked and in his arms), but with a heart of gold. He also sees much to admire in Daphne's Big Brain, as well as in her lovely body. Daphne, on the other hand, has never felt normal or womanly, but simple and very manly Rupert is definitely normal enough to assure her, and he is more than strong and reliable enough to fulfill anyone's idea of a hero, even if she's the acknowledged Brain in the relationship. Seeing these two unlikely people get together is a whole lot of fun.

Witty, Intelligent, Engrossing
By M. L. Kramer
Loved it! Loved it!
What a wonderful book! The plot and romance here is totally believable! Rupert, the wayward son of an English nobleman, is a wonderfully witty, wonderfully stong, self-deprecating male, surely no "dumb loat" as he likes to call himself! Daphne, evolves from being the repressed, secluded widow of an emotionally weak, autocratic Englishman, into a woman aware of her own strength of character and self worth, both intellectually and emotionally. Both characters evolve and come into their own, as a natural development of the story, not as a contrivance! Rupert respects and loves Daphne's intelligence, insight, and as a person. Daphne respects and loves Rupert's ability to love life, to live in the moment, he draws her out and brings a perpective to her life she has never experienced before. Daphne is not a whiner and Rupert is not an arrogant man, both are endearing characters. I loved the storyline, the character development, the richness and easy flow of the prose and the author's respect for the reader's intelligence! Nothing is obvious, and nothing is left to chance, each character is richly portrayed and essential to the story, even down to the captivating mongoose! The story twists and turns carrying the reader along on an expected journey, set during the exploration and exploitation of Egypt's historical artifacts of the early 1800's. This book by Chase is, IMHO, is a keeper!

If you already own a prior version, save your money!
By Capricorn QT
I bought this book back in '02 and it was so extremely accurate, that I couldn't wait to find an updated version for '06 & '07. Boy was that a waste of money. The books are EXACTLY the same! I was reading the '06 version and it sounded very familiar so I whipped out my old faithful and sure enough - exactly the same wording!

The least the author could have done was give us a new book per year if she's going to be releasing and making money off of it. It was definitely a waste of money and if you already own one of the books, it's pretty much the same every year.

Careless with Shakespeare and with Movies
By Macready Lawes
When writing about Shakespeare in the Movies, it's helpful to know something about *both* topics. Brode, a prolific commentator on film, is remarkably unconcerned about Shakespeare's life, his works, their theatrical traditions, and even their cinematic traditions -- all of which have inspired and informed the films about which he here endeavors to write. The results are so irresponsible that the original publisher has tried to distance itself as far as possible from this travesty. An earlier edition of the book prompted the following assessments from Amazon.com reviewers:

"This book is so bad, Amazon needs to come up with a NO STAR option. There are a stunning number of factual errors. Literally dozens, maybe into three digits. The author's grasp of the material is always superficial. I can't imagine a worse book on this subject. I know this sounds like hyperbole. It is not."

"Read the review in the Spring 2000 issue of *The Shakespeare Newsletter* before purchasing this book. The review begins, 'Briefly, this is so dreadfully bad a book that it, quite literally, ought to be withdrawn from publication'(18); the review amply substantiates this judgment in several thousand words quoting and describing the egregious errors in this book."

This is not just a matter of bad scholarship: the same laziness in regard to Shakespeare himself is also evident in Brode's pedestrian readings of some compelling experiments in adapting Shakespeare's plays for the screen.

The Worst Book Ever Written on Shakespeare
By Kevin Crawford
It's well known in academic circles that after Oxford University Press published this in Europe (which must have gotten a few people fired) they refused to release it here. It's full of major errors, and is riddled with "gentle Will," "sweet Will," "immortal Bard" rhetoric that is utter nonsense. The book is blatantly homophobic, sexist, and fetishizes Shakespeare to an embarassing extent; I used it in a "Shakespeare on Film" seminar with university undergrads for a daily exercise in comic relief. Complete rubbish.

In a word (or two) - All Encompassing
By Chris Emily
Brode once again nails it! Anyone even remotely interested in Willy Shake should add this study to their collection. Written in the informative and highly entertaining manner common to his work, Douglas Brode provides a detailed road map through the works of Willy Shake as they have been applied to the silver screen. Another hit!

From Booklist
Albert's mystery series featuring China Bayles sets the stage for this celebration of the role of herbs in everyday life. Fans of China Bayles will revel in the way this diary fleshes out their heroine and offers in detail explicit connections between the novels' characters and the real leaves, flowers, and seeds that constitute Albert's well-imagined fictional botanic environment. Albert engagingly shows off her astounding knowledge of herbal lore that extends from the Middle Ages to the present. For example, she explains how beer used to be flavored with rosemary or anise until the introduction of hops in the seventeenth century. She gives instructions for creating a tussie-mussie, an herbal nosegay for fending off unpleasant odors. Further recipes for similar bouquets and for comestibles pepper the text as well. Each day's entry also includes one or more book titles for further exploration of the entry's subject. Mark Knoblauch

AUGUST 31

Yesterday was the Feast Day of St. Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners, florists, and herbalists.

If your garden is doing particularly well this year, you can thank St. Fiacre, the patron saint of gardens. If it isn’t—well, perhaps you could ask this helpful saint to lend a hand.

The Tale of St. Fiacre

Fiacre lived in the seventh century. He was raised in an Irish monastery, where he learned to use healing herbs. He wanted to be a hermit, but his skill and knowledge brought people to him, so he went to France in search of solitude, taking up residence in a cave near a spring. He needed a garden (who doesn’t?) so he asked a nearby bishop, St. Faro of Meaux, for land. The bishop gave him as much garden space as he could plow in a day. The next morning, it is said, Fiacre chose his spot and began to walk around it, dragging his spade behind him. Magically, wherever his spade touched, trees toppled, bushes were uprooted, the soil was turned over, and the rocks were plucked out. The local folk, frightened, called it sorcery, but the bishop declared Fiacre’s garden a miracle. (Personally, I suspect that the bishop had some gardening work of his own that needed to be done.) Fiacre’s garden, always in bloom and always beautifully tended, became a place of pilgrimage. His healing herbs were eagerly sought, and his culinary herbs were used to flavor food that was offered to the poor.

To invite blessings to your garden you might purchase a small statue of this gardener’s saint and put it in a quiet corner, where you can enjoy the meditative silence Fiacre sought in his own garden. Surround it with such healing herbs as sage, thyme, mint, fennel, dill, and St. John’s wort, herbs that Fiacre would have known and used.

The growing of the first few herbs is the discovery of a whole new world of garden pleasure and human meaning, but it is when a gardener has tried a few, liked them and been liked by them and would go on that the full adventure begins. –Henry Beston, Herbs and the Earth

Feast of herbal facts.
By QueenMummy
I bought this book before Christmas, for me, and wasn't at all disappointed in it. I have always loved the idea of a book one can turn to as the days pass. This one has fascinating facts about herbs and lovely illustrations to boot. I enjoy looking through it as I relax and find the information engrossing.

Not Just for China Bayles' Fans!!
By Mimbelina
So many reviews of this book focus on its tie to Albert's fictional sleuth and herb shop owner, China Bayles, and forget to mention the wealth of information with which Susan saturates each entry. If you've ever wanted to acquire more than a cook's basic knowledge of the herbs we use to season and spice our foods, this book is the perfect resource. From the zodiac associations of herbs to their scientific uses, proven remedies to questionable uses prominent in old wives' tales, recipes from all over the globe and short blurbs about interesting places to visit and see these herbs in their natural habitats: the abundance of information packed into each daily reading is tantalizing, just like the herbs they describe. A wonderful companion book to the China Bayles' series, but so very much more as well! Highly recommended for all herb-lovers, gardeners and cooks.
