Catapulted from her home, her marriage and her children, artist Rebecca Simms has come to Pawleys Island to hide herself from herself. Little does she know that on this “arrogantly shabby” family playground, she’ll encounter three people who will change her life: a wise and irresistible octogenarian who will pry her secrets from her, a gallery owner who caters to interior decorators and heaven save us, tourists, and a retired attorney from Columbia who’s complacent in her fat and sassy life until Rebecca’s stormy advent.

With characteristic humor and a full cast of eccentric and wonderfully lovable characters, Dorothea Benton Frank brings us a refreshingly honest and funny novel about friendship, family, and finding happiness by becoming who you are meant to be...

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Frank's fifth Lowcountry Tale is a lively story about friendship and family, Southern-style. On the small South Carolina barrier island that gives the book its title, semiretired attorney Abigail Thurmond spends most of her days playing golf and gossiping with her best friend, the portly, lovably aristocratic Huey Valentine. But their comfortable lives of leisure are turned upside-down with the arrival of one diminutive Rebecca Sims. Becca's obvious artistic talent and poise make it easy for Huey to show her art and hire her to manage his art gallery, but when his 86-year-old mother unearths Becca's tragic past, Huey can't help sticking his aquiline nose in her business. Once an attentive wife and loving mother of two in Charleston, Becca became the victim of her abusive husband, who turned her children against her and then filed for divorce. Abigail and Huey must help their new friend, of course, and as they draw closer to one another through Becca's tribulations, Abigail is finally able to examine the ghosts that have haunted her for years, and Huey gets to reveal a (pretty unsurprising) secret of his own. Frank's absorbing narrative manages to feel both authentically Southern and universally empathetic.

Frank's fifth book in her Lowcountry series (following Shem Creek, 2004) focuses on the tight-knit community of Pawleys Island, an "arrogantly shabby" oasis off the coast of South Carolina. Shifting first-person narratives invite you into this charming southern isle that, behind its decorum, is the kind of place that you don't go unless you want your life shaken and stirred. Rebecca Simms naively seeks retreat there, but she soon realizes just how tangled and involved island life can be. Her new employer, his feisty mother, and their ex-lawyer friend all drag out Rebecca's painful past. Through these newfound friends' curiosity and genuine concern, Rebecca soon finds that she cannot hide from her recently shattered marriage. This compulsively readable novel tackles the weighty topics of marital infidelity and self-transformation, but its warm conversational tone will give it appeal to fans of both Fannie Flagg and Larry McMurtry's Terms of Endearment. A true southern comfort. Misha Stone

From Publishers Weekly
In Fusilli's fourth entry in this complex, character-driven crime series, Terry Orr, single parent and occasional private detective, is more analytical and less self-absorbed than he was in 2003's Tribeca Blues. Daniel Wu, the appealing friend of Orr's precocious teenage daughter, Bella, asks him to find the missing Allie Powell, a student at Manhattan's Fashion Institute of Technology. Orr, guilty about the lack of time spent with Bella and still haunted by the deaths four years earlier of his wife and son, agrees to look for Allie. What initially appears to be a simple search for a wayward teenager evolves into a byzantine trail of theft, violence, murder, blackmail and politics. Fusilli's themes echo those of his mentors, Raymond Chandler, Ross Macdonald and Robert B. Parker: wealth engenders dishonesty and corruption and, as with the latter two, neglected children. It's not hard to identify the culprits here, though their motives are only slowly revealed. Fusilli is a serious novelist who excels in creating a noirish view of Manhattan and strong characters whose relationships continue to evolve with each book.

From Bookmarks Magazine
The multi-talented Fusilli, a music critic for The Wall Street Journal and NPR, is just as gifted at creating his own work as he is at dissecting that of others. With Hard, Hard City, Fusilli brings back Terry Orr, last seen in 2003’s Tribeca Blues. Critics praise the nuance with which Fusilli imbues Orr—the character is layered like a human being, not a pulpy gumshoe—and the accuracy with which he captures New York City’s dark underbelly. A few blanch at the plot’s twists and turns, however, believing they skid into B-movie territory. Overall, most strongly recommend Fusilli’s novel to both mystery fans and those who usually eschew the genre. As The Washington Post notes, "If you have fallen into the habit of reading the same favorites over and over—Grisham, Grafton, Sandford, whatever—branch out a bit. Live dangerously!"

From Booklist
Contrary to its title, a warm heart beats beneath the wintry surface of the fourth Terry Orr mystery, as one more layer of Orr's hard-boiled exterior melts away in the glowing presence of his precocious daughter, Bella, and her pals; his lover, Julie; his friend Diddio, with the failing Tea Shop; and various other exemplars of the good people of New York. Meanwhile, some scumbags from New Jersey will stop at nothing to recover what was stolen from the safe of a godly man left transfixed on the ironwork three stories below his apartment. Caught in the middle is Allie, a slight teen on the run from callous, warring parents and badly in need of a friend. Orr takes his lumps, exacts revenge, and pops a lot of pain killers, while his roving eye details the big city's frozen bustle, and his mind's eye flashes unbidden on the troubling past. Fans of Michael Connelly and Richard Barre will enjoy this solid, reflective PI yarn, but series newcomers are advised to start with Closing Time (2001) to avoid spoilers. David Wright

Orr's world continues in "Hard, Hard City"
By Kevin Tipple
Terry Orr tries to live in the present but the past is never more than a seconds thought away. Not that he doesn't have plenty of reason to live in the here and now thanks to his young teenage daughter, Gabriella whom he calls lovingly Bella, her friends, and other things of interest. But, he still feels the loss of his wife Marina and their young son and while he mourns their loss he also never will really know what his wife Marina truly felt and thought.

He used to write and hasn't in a very long time. He used to work as a detective until after his last case when Bella hid his private investigator license in an attempt to protect him from himself. It has been over a month and he really hasn't done much of anything. That is until a friend of hers, Daniel, asks Terry Orr for his help.

Daniel, describing a situation of a friend of a friend deal asks his help in locating a young student by the name of Allie Powell. Allie took classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and hasn't been seen in days. His powerful parents don't seen to know or even care where he is. The Uncle who lives up on the Upper East Side wasn't much help either to Daniel's friend when she went looking for him. Daniel doesn't like the situation at all and thinks it needs to be made clear to the family of the missing student that Allie has friends.

Orr agrees to talk to the Uncle and things quickly get out of hand. Accosted and roughed up repeatedly, Orr works a case that quite clearly no one in the boy's family want him involved with. Beyond the rather strange Uncle and his issues, the parents have an agenda of their own and the welfare of their son seems to be a minor secondary concern. They share their lack of concern over the boy's safety with another group who is looking for him for unknown reasons and don't seem to care who gets hurt in the process. Through it all Orr tries to deal with a current mystery as well as the pain and unresolved questions of his own past.

This fourth novel of the series is a well written and features an interesting multi facetted main character as well as a slew of interesting secondary characters. Relationships matter deeply in the work as does the past. The result is a highly engaging read that could be read as a stand-alone but would definitely be better enjoyed if read in the sequence of the series. The pace of the tale is slow, broken by violent sequences of action at times, and at other times, by digressions regarding past events and motivations. As the story moves forward the real world falls away and the reader becomes enmeshed into this enjoyable and highly entertaining novel.

PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR'S PRIVATE PAIN PERSISTS
By crafty lefthander
What happens to a man who finds out his governing obsession for personal justice turns out to misdirected, and he learns that the loss of two loved ones was caused by personal betrayal? Does he gradually return to a normal life? Or does he still feel too jaundiced, too withered, too inadequate, to defeat his inner demons?

For five years, Terry Orr sought to find a mentally ill musical prodigy, believing he was the killer who cost Orr his wife and son, only to learn that his wife, an Italian-born artist, was the impetus for the fatal occurrence, betraying Orr on two levels. In this fourth, and so far, last, of Jim Fusilli's mystery novels featuring the writer-turned-private investigator, Orr searches for a missing teenager at the request of one of his daughter's high school friends. The young boy who has disappeared is a sensitive, scared child with a talent for fashion design, burdened by a white collar criminal for a father, and a deceitful and devious mother. An envelope is missing from a safe, as well as a small amount of money. Somebody wants to recover what was taken from the safe, and desperately. And it isn't about the chump change. There may be something in the envelope too, that might wreck the budding political career of Orr's friend who is thinking of running for Congress.

A caveat here, if I'm allowed to make one. While this can be read as a stand alone novel, it would be wise to read the Orr books in sequential order because these are not just crime novels, they are gripping sagas of a man over a five year period, and the reader will be more fully satisfied if that route is taken.

In investigating the whereabouts of the missing boy, Orr finds himself in a New Jersey suburb where law enforcement is under the thumb of the father. There is an inordinate amount of violence within the story. A kindly and religious man who befriended the youngster is thought to have the goods, and meets an agonizing fate. Orr himself is run off the road once, beaten another time, and winds up in the hospital twice. An ex-con, the one who first injured Orr, somehow survives a shooting and a plunge to the ground, and comes after Orr again.

Orr finds the boy and shelters him with a solid citizen, but is not satisfied with just that. There are a lot of bad actors here, and he seeks justice, determined in the same way as he was when he was seeking to avenge his own tragedy.

All the while, you can see that Terry Orr still agonizes inside himself. He has a girlfriend of sorts, Julie, smart, pretty and family-oriented, but he does not know how to react to her. She tells him she loves him. He stays mute. He can't hold her while she is sleeping. He refuses to meet her family. His daughter Bella becomes close to her, he shrugs it off. Orr does not use Julie as a plaything, he's not cold or cruel, he's just stuck in neutral. Maybe the lady expects too much, for it's only a few months since Orr found out the truth about his wife and son, and it is devastating, and would be to anyone. But she is almost saintlike in her patience.

As with all the Orr books, there is no happy ending. Unfortunately for those of us who have enjoyed the series immensely, Fusilli has not written another novel featuring the character in a decade. Perhaps because the reasons for the death of Orr's wife and baby were revealed, Fusilli could not, or decided not, to move the character forward, concerned he would become repetitious. Then again, the books might not have moved off the shelves fast enough. The genre is so crowded with authors, from the great to the hack, that it sometimes takes a new writer time to find real success. Fusilli's website does not even refer to the Orr books, and he is undoubtedly the best mystery writer not to have a biography on Wikipedia. But, if book sales were based on merit rather than on publicity machines, Hard Hard City, as well as Closing Time, A Well-Kept Secret and Tribeca Blues would have been snapped up the way soda pop sells on a hot day. Fusilli has now written three other novels. Let's hope he is no longer a well-kept secret.

Dark and Unsettling mystery
By carl brookins
Terry Orr has lost his wife and infant son in a terrible accident. It has thrown his life into seething turmoil that even the best efforts of his precocious daughter Bella, appear to have little positive effect. The genesis of the story comes from Bella, who is one of the more sensitive teenagers you'll encounter in life or in fiction. She asks her father to locate a classmate who has abruptly disappeared.

While slowly working his way through his own internal monsters, Orr roams New York and its satellites in a wide-ranging effort to find a missing Allie Powell, a noticeably talented student at the Fashion Institute. The search brings Orr into contact with a whole host of minor characters, some of who are monsters. Some of them appear and disappear in abrupt and unsettling manner. With almost no exceptions, these minor but important characters are quirky, unusual, memorable, and vital to the story. They propel the action forward, offer rhythmic counterpoints, and when Orr probes far enough to discover all manner of corruption and official malfeasance, some of them turn lethal. Orr then finds himself a target for murder.

In many dark detective novels, the protagonist is mired in such muck and corruption that everyone he or she encounters is guilty of many illegal and morally repugnant acts, and while that's true of any number of the characters in this novel, there are leavening aspects in the sub-plots which not only add balance to the life of this novel and of the characters, but change the rhythms and the light in such a way that every so often we nod and smile and think that the author has got it just right.

Author Fusilli's ear for dialogue, particularly among the teen-agers who have their own agenda and thus their own sub-plot quite apart from their concern for the missing Allie, is quite remarkable. His writing style lends itself to the changes in conversational styles among the characters and his eye for the small detail which brings us smack into the scene is excellent.

In the last analysis, this is a novel about two quite different sets of family relationships and the damage and the nurturing which affect attitudes and outcomes in profound and wonderful ways. Enjoyable, thoughtful and intense, HARD, HARD CITY is a novel to be savored.

The British author's 27th novel boasts the combination of subject matter and prose style that have made him an international bestseller: thoroughbred horses and heroes, heart palpitations, speed and comedy. Heading the large, colorful cast, narrator Torquil (Tor) Kelsey is an undercover agent for the British Jockey Club. The members have been balked in their efforts to convict wily Julius Apollo Filmer of murder and other crimes that tarnish the sport of kings. With hopes of gaining evidence against Filmer, Tor joins the rich crowd going from England to Canada for "The Great Transcontinental Mystery Race Train." Pretending he's a waiter, Tor keeps an eye on Filmer as the train rockets across the Northwest. There is no limit to the thrills along the way, and no way of predicting the stunning denouement. 200,000 first printing; $150,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild main selection.

Dick Francis, a former jockey, brings his experience of racing and life around the racetrack to his mysteries. (And so far Francis is a three-time winner of the Edgar Award for writing the best mystery of the year.) This horse racing background is appealing to my market area of Southern California. Racing is a popular sport amongst Southlanders.

A fantastic book
By ROGER
The story covers many great themes; from train travel; through scenic highlights; horse racing and a great romance. It is to be regretted that the untimely death of Dick Francis means that there will never be a sequel book so I will never know if the young couple get to "live happily ever-after"
I strongly recommend you to read this book.

Hunting Eric Rudolph, by Henry Schuster, Charles Stone

Accused of detonating bombs at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, two abortion clinics, and a gay nightclub, Eric Rudolph went on the run. He shot bears and ate salamanders for more than five years, but finally was captured in June 2003 and now sits in a Birmingham jail.

Hunting Eric Rudolph covers the problems that hampered the investigation into the Centennial Park bombing, including a wrongful accusation, and discusses where and how Eric Rudolph obtained bomb components. Going into detail as to who the FBI suspected of helping him during his time on the run, the story covers the secret surveillance methods used to track him in the woods and mountains, and also takes an in-depth look at life inside the Rudolph family--including rarely seen photographs.

This is a suspenseful account of the five-year hunt for the man behind the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Park bombing. Eric Rudolph is now also facing federal charges for bombings of a gay nightclub and two abortion clinics in Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala. Descriptive anecdotes of Rudolph and his family help Schuster, a CNN senior producer, and Stone, former head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Anti-Terrorist Force, illustrate how a man on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List with a million-dollar reward on his head managed to elude the FBI for years by hiding out in the mountains of North Carolina. Exposed by his mother to the radical racist and anti-Semitic Christian Identity movement, Rudolph became a white supremacist opposed to the government, gays and abortion, who may have been helped by sympathetic neighbors during his years as a fugitive. The authors avoid turning their subject into a romantic outlaw by fully describing those who were killed and maimed by the explosions he allegedly set. Schuster and Stone also point to errors committed by the FBI, such as their initial pursuit of an innocent man (Richard Jewell) and their preventing a local sheriff from picking up Rudolph early. 16 pages of b&w photos.

The book delivers as promised
By Jon Gordon
The title of the book, Hunting Eric Rudolph: An Insider's Account of the Five-Year Search for the Olympic Bombing Suspect, is an accurate description of what the book covers. While the book is an utterly absorbing and well told story, Henry Schuster and Charles Stone have substantially limited their account to just the bombings that Rudolph perpetrated, as well as to the government's pursuit of him during the time that he was a fugitive. If you are interested in just that aspect of the story, this is definitely the book for you. The story is absolutely dramatic and totally riveting.

However, if you are interested in the fiasco that engulfed Richard Jewell, or the legal proceedings that eventually produced Rudolph's plea agreement, the authors only peripherally discuss those issues, which they should have, as those elements were really ancillary to Rudolph's crimes and ultimate capture. Indeed, just the injustice done to Jewell should be the subject of a book. But Hunting Eric Rudolph, in and of itself, is well worth reading.

On a personal note, through reading the book, I discovered a number of things that I had previously not known. For example, on the day that the Centennial Park bombing occurred, I was attending classes at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia and after having watched the morning news, I went to the school's cafeteria and found that basically everybody had gone. The majority of the center's student population had been deployed to Atlanta for the remainder of the Olympics.

As the news developed, after it had been reported that the bomber had made an anonymous telephone call warning of the device, but before Jewell had been named as a suspect, there was speculation that the bomber had not actually intended to hurt anyone, but had simply wanted to scare people instead. Through reading the book, I discovered just how far off that was. Schuster and Stone graphically described Rudolph's intensions, not only in Atlanta, but in Birmingham as well. The portion of the story describing Rudolph's deliberate targeting of Police Officer Robert Sanderson, who was working security at an abortion clinic, dispelled any myth as to what his intensions actually were. The book is a fantastic read and should serve as a warning as to what a fanatical lone wolf is capable of.

Great account of Rudolph with few slow spots
By mysterious matt
This account of Eric Rudolph was very interesting. I found the book a little more interesting than the average reader probably will because he was born in my hometown, I lived in B'ham and I was also vacationing in Murphy in the summer of 98 when the fbi had helicopters and officers searching the entire nantahala area. The only complaint I have about the book (and it's minimal) is that I thought that they spent too much time on details about his family in the middle of the book and it kind of slowed down the pace. Having said that, the pace is still as good as any fiction novel/mystery novel i've ever read. If you enjoy a fast paced, puzzle solving-type story, this book is right up your alley.

Extremely entertaining...
By Jeremy R. Young
Hunting Eric Rudolph is an awesome read. The authors deliver the story of Rudolph's entire life, often with an insightful and somtimes humorous backdrop. It goes in depth to explain the reasons for Rudolph's perplexing psyche and the culture in which it was cultivated.

The real value of the book however is the context in which it is delivered. Schuster explains why this story was not only significant in our past, but what we can extract from it to prevent similar types of domestic terrorism in our future. Thoroughly researched and masterfully presented, this was definitely a book that I could not put down.

The Great Investment: Balancing. Faith, Family and Finance to Build a Rich Spiritual Life, by T. D. Jakes

Bishop T. D. Jakes, preacher, author, motivator, and entrepreneur, is one of the most respected and influential voices in the country today. Now, in The Great Investment, Bishop Jakes gives readers the blueprint for balanced successful living. He explains how the triad of faith, family and finance is the cornerstone of a life of moral success—success based on God’s plan.

Faith is the foundation of all that we want to achieve. Bishop Jakes explores the impact faith can have in healing and restoring quality of life to those whose history has caused them setbacks.

Family is the anchor, keeping us grounded, supporting us, and allowing us to stay focused. A healthy family sustains us while giving meaning to our endeavors.

Finally, and no less crucial, Finance is the often misunderstood factor in the equation for success. Bishop Jakes removes the veil from this frequently neglected topic, and shows that, not only is it not profane to focus on this area, it is essential.

Bishop T. D. Jakes’s goal is to empower every woman and man. With this new book he provides the tools for us to chart a course for success and accomplish everything that God has promised. This is truly a book of our time.

Amazon.com Review
Bishop T.D. Jakes invites readers to "pack three bags" for the journey of life: finances, family, and faith. On this three-legged stool rests his formula for success and the basis for the book The Great Investment. His concepts are simple, yet solid. On family: "Accept your mate's differences." "Compromise." "Teamwork." "Be grateful." On finances: "Get a receipt." "Learn to distinguish between your needs and your wants." "Don't waste your hard-earned money on the lottery or games of chance; invest it instead." On faith: "Divine guidance is an invaluable resource. Without it, you are like a sailor at sea unable to find his way because he has no compass on his ship."

Jakes is a familiar figure to many, hosting a weekly television program on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and Black Entertainment Television. The New York Times recently named him one of the nation's most influential ministers, and many of his books, including Woman, Thou Art Loosed and The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord, have found a wide readership.

In The Great Investment, Jakes challenges Christians to hang on to their Christian ideals, yet still build a bridge to those who live less-than-ideal lives. He endeavors to make faith and biblical wisdom accessible and relevant to those both inside and outside the church who are seeking practical help for stabilizing their lives. A lofty goal, and with his large audience, one that will hopefully succeed. --Cindy Crosby

From Publishers Weekly
This uneven effort by the indomitable Jakes (The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord) inadvertently contains two discrete booksAone on family, and one on personal finance. The sections on family are the best; Jakes compares the ideal Christian family (two parents, one of whom is a stay-at-home mom, and both of whom were virgins when they wed) with the more diverse reality of contemporary America. He quite effectively addresses nontraditional configurations such as blended, one-parent, and grandmother-headed families in a supportive and nonjudgmental tone. Jakes speaks specifically to African-American families like his own, who were left "emancipated but incapacitated" after generations of slavery. The finance portion of the book reflects Jakes's desire to avoid preaching the health-and-wealth gospel while simultaneously telling readers that God wants them to be financially comfortable. Jesus, says Jakes, desires Christians to have the kind of worldly influence that only wealth can bring. Much of Jakes's financial advice is typical of other Christian money gurus such as Larry Burkett and Mary Hunt, though without their detailed plans for debt-free living and profitable investing. Jakes stands out with his memorable biblical examples of prudent money management and his clear stance that Christian tithing should be from gross, not net, income. While there are flashes of genius in both the finance and family sections, the whole would be improved by a more narrow focus on just one of its parts. (Nov.) Forecast: This title does not have the female audience appeal that helped to sell more than a million copies of Woman, Thou Art Loosed!, but Jakes's name and well-established television ministry will ensure reasonable success for this volume. Booksellers might consider stocking it under both religion and personal finance.

From Library Journal
We need faith to guide us, argues best-selling spiritual author Jakes, and family to ground us, but we also need to prosper so that we can spread God's word.

Insightful, Scriptural, Practical ! ! !
By Dr. W. G. Covington, Jr.
T. D. Jakes describes life as a journey in which some people pack more than is necessary for the most productive trip. He wisely advises carry three bags, faith, family, and finances. I think it is no accident that he arranges them in that order either. Faith is needed for this life and preparation for the next. Family is something you can take with you, provided they share the faith and finances encompasses effective stewardship principles that reveal what you have to show for your existence.
Although each of these subjects is familiar, Bishop Jakes sheds new insight in each of the three arenas. He builds to a climax in his teaching on Romans 8:28-30. It is worth the price of the book just to read what he says in the few pages devoted to that topic alone! He will build your faith because he speaks from the perspective of a credible source, i.e., it's lived it.
This book is comprehensive in that he covers both Old and New Testament teachings on the topics. He includes personal experiences. Bishop Jakes is even confident enough to be vulnerable in places, not one who claims in a phoney way to have all the answers. His advice is practical, doable, workable. I highly recommend this book.

Touched My Heart
By Mara Kim
I actually saw this book in a retail store and it sparked my attention. Within 2 days, I read the entire book. I felt like God was speaking to me with each word. The finance area was an interest to me because I have Christian friends who think that they have to be poor. That's not what God wants. I no longer feel guilty for wanting more. In fact, I'm excited because if I do get more, I will be able to help others more. I am in a situation where I do give as much as I can; however, I wish I could do more. I'm going to re-read it and begin to apply it to my life. I have already recommended it to others to read.
In the area of Family. I realized that I need to be a participant in solving family issues.
In the area of Faith, this book has only increased it even more.
Please take the time to read this book. You won't be sorry. The author knows what it is like to be rich and to be poor so he is able to relay the information to others in a way that makes sense.
Thank You, T.D. Jakes... It was the first time that I have read your book and I am looking forward in reading your other books.

From Publishers Weekly
Agatha Award winner Fowler offers two parallel plots to dramatize the alternating light-and-dark theme of her 10th beguiling mystery to feature Benni Harper, the San Celina, Calif., amateur sleuth and folk art museum curator. The first is set in 1978, when she's married to rancher Jack Harper; the second in 1995, when she's married to police chief Gabe Ortiz, whom she almost lost to Gabe's old lover Del Hernandez in her previous outing, Steps to the Altar (2002). In the "present" of 1995, when mystery writer and one-time San Selina resident Emma Baldwin loans a crazy quilt for display at the folk art museum, Benni is excited, though the quilt brings back mixed feelings about Jack. Then, shortly after arriving in town on a hush-hush case, PI Luke Webster, a former LAPD pal of Gabe's, gets stabbed to death. Frightening attacks on Benni's truck, creepy phone calls and hate mail follow. Benni must draw on all her crime-solving skills to find the pattern in the clues presented in this ingenious mystery. The overabundance of incidental detail may put off some, but most readers will relish the author's appealing picture of ranch life and small-town affairs, of barbecues and fiestas, of jocular locals and warm family and friends.
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The Benni Harper mysteries all have quilt patterns for their titles, and quilts figure prominently. Benni's latest opens with her grandmother Dove's marriage in the San Celina, California, church where Benni's own first marriage took place. The tale slips between the present (1995 here) and 1978, when Benni was a young married college student writing a paper on her favorite author, a local writer of Nancy Drew-type stories for girls. There's loss aplenty in Benni's circle, where everyone seems to have lost a spouse or a child, but there's tenderness, too, and an honest religious faith that pervades but does not smother the dailiness of life. Benni's new second husband is the Latino police chief. An old friend of his comes to town and is killed; Benni's author also returns to San Celina and is threatened; someone is stalking Benni herself. The many plotlines converge in a warmhearted spiral that includes the difficulties of marriage, the complexities of a large multiethnic circle of overlapping friends and relations, and old, buried secrets. Wonderful book
By ktgnewjersey
I really enjoyed this book. I liked it much better than Steps to the Altar. The thing that makes this book so enjoyable to read is the author's ability to make the reader feel like they are part of all the character's lives - not just Benni and her husband. I espcecially liked finding out more about the character of Jack.
The only negative is that there are way too many typos in the text of the paperback version. Ms. Fowler's writing deserves a better presentation.

I Love Earlene Fowler
By Linda C. Davis
I don't even like horses, or dude ranches or mexican food but I love Earlene Fowler's books. In the spunky Benni Harper we have a female character who is also a very moral individual. She's no stick in the mud but she has standards. Gabe, Benni's love interest, sizzles off the pages...he's ornery and controlling but so is Benni. REad everything Fowler has written. You'll have a great read and a great ride.

Great Series
By A Customer
This is a terrific series and the latest installment didn't disappoint. Sunny is a very likeable heroine and her adventures make for good reading.
However, there are so many errors in this book -- spelling, grammar, punctuation -- that it gets to be distracting about halfway through. I hope the author and her publisher find a new editor before the next installment comes out.

Fun and different!
By A Customer
People don't often write puzzle/closed-room mysteries any more, but Birmingham ventures into that style with the opening murder -- if the person standing with a gun next to the dead body isn't the killer, who is?
As a former Atlanta resident, I recognized the setting and noticed that the author was true to life.
This is an enjoyable, surprising read.

From Publishers Weekly
Det. Lucas Davenport has battled some real demons over the past 15 Prey novels and drifted in and out of lust and love with a host of women. But now he's happily married to the lovely Weather; has a nine-month-old son, Sam; and takes care of his 12-year-old ward, Letty West. Sure, he's got a measure of the old angst, but he's growing accustomed to the good life, spending quality time alone on the couch drinking beer and watching TV golf. His new job is running the Office of Regional Research at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension where he looks into various crimes and "fixes shit" for the governor. So when a dead Russian shows up on the docks in Duluth, Lucas is assigned to shepherd the lady investigator, Nadya Kalin, being sent by the Russian government. From the very first pages, the reader knows it's teenager Carl Walther who has killed the Russian. What makes the book intriguing is the manner in which the sagacious Davenport goes about uncovering the rest of the co-conspirators-a gang of Minnesota-based Communist spies headed by Carl's grandpa, 92-year-old ex-KGB colonel Burt Walther. That Sandford makes this unlikely plot believable is a mark of his mastery of the technical aspects of the mystery form and a testament to his overall writing skills. Readers will be pleased with this relaxed version of the moody Minneapolis investigator. In past novels, the womanizing Davenport would have romanced the good-looking Russian lady, but the new Davenport is content to play the part of friend and protector and go back to his cozy family with an unstained and remarkably contented soul.

From Booklist
A Russian sailor is the victim of a professional assassination on the docks of Duluth. Wary of international implications, the governor of Minnesota asks Lucas Davenport, the chief investigator for the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, to investigate. Major Nadezhda Kalin, a representative of Russian law enforcement, assists Davenport. The murder may be linked to the remnants of a dormant Soviet Union network established between the world wars but forgotten by the motherland. The descendants of the original network members have all melded into the American mainstream. Davenport and Kalin pursue the case through the rural mining towns of northern Minnesota even as they become the targets of the shadowy assassin. The sixteenth Prey novel is less harrowing and not as dark as many of its predecessors. It's also more humorous--even the suicide of a key character is accompanied by a sly, graveyard one-liner--with deft Davenport observations on the curious behavior of the opposite sex in general and on Russian women in particular. Similarities to previous Prey thrillers: high entertainment value; deftly rendered characterizations; and clever, believable dialogue. Expect another best-seller and stock up accordingly. Review
“Eerily suspenseful.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Vintage Sandford—a tough, intriguing story wrapped around an equally tough and intriguing cop.”—Chicago Tribune

“Skillfully blends dark humor and the macabre in scenes worthy of a Coen brothers’ movie…pure delight.”—Orlando Sentinel

“Deft, action-packed, and slyly funny. Just when you thought the silky smooth Sandford couldn’t possibly get better, he does.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“The plot unfolds sharply, holding you relentlessly until its superb denouement. Sandford’s writing is as spare and direct as a Minnesota winter landscape, and his characters crackle with life…[Davenport] is the pounding heart of the novel.”—The Associated Press

THIS PREY IS WELL HIDDEN
By William Lotz
This is a very unusual novel.

It starts with a drunken female tramp named Trey, in Duluth, Minnesota, who is shot at by a young man. The shot missed, and she ran. He followed her, shot at her again, but the gun was out of ammo.

She pulled out a switchblade knife, and went after him, and slashed his arm.

He backed away, saying that he would come back and get her, then walked away, into the darkness, and disappeared.

The novel ends, with Lucas Davenport and Lt. Colonel Nadya Kalin, of the Russian Intelligence Service, catching an undercover ring of Russian spies, that was obtaining American secrets for transmission, through the Russian Embassy, to Russia.

Despite a few detrimental aspects, such as extended descriptions of meaningless activities and events, this is still an exciting novel to read.

Another winner from John Sanford.
By johnfcon
Lucas Davenport is one of the best series characters in this day and age. Even though I have most of this series in hardback, I find it rewarding to keep a Kindle in my pocket, and have probably bought most of what's on the library shelves. This series is timeless, from dial up phones and manual typewriters to smartphones and computers, it's the story that counts, and Sandford always delivers.

Cold War Retro
By Charles Sherry
Hidden Prey is another jewel in the long list of John Sandford thrillers. This one brings us back to hidden cells of communists living and working among us. Remnants of the Cold War that never were recalled or turned off with undying loyalty to Mother Russia. Mysterious murders get Lucas involved and the twists and turns will keep you turning the pages well beyond bed time.

Get Down to Business Fast!
By A Customer
I purchased this small companion book along with the big hardcover "Eat Right for Your Bloood Type." My 77-year-old uncle had convinced me that my family history (all blood type A+) indicated that I would benefit from following the eating plan. His comments and his experience were very persuasive.
If you accept the validity of Dr. D'Adamo's approach, there's no need to open the big book right away. With this small companion book, one can get down to business. By focusing on highly beneficial foods and avoiding the "poison" foods, it's easy to change your food selections and preparation style.
You can take the book into supermarkets, specialty foods stores and restaurants as a handy guide. You can bring it with you on vacation, business trips and dinner parties. You will quickly get a sense for the highly beneficial foods that you most enjoy. The book also makes it easy to experiment!
In many ways, using this book makes it fun to eat. It's easy to go meatless quickly. Yes ... one can even enjoy tofu (it's not bad ... really!). There are lots of great alternatives for protein that allow you variety and flexibility.
It's still a good idea to read the big book. But you can change your life right away with this small companion! I truly can feel a difference in my health after just two weeks.

great reference book
By M. Jackson
I found this book extremely helpful in making great food choices. Though I was skeptical at first, I lost 6 pounds in eating according to the plan in the first 2 weeks. When I follow the diet, I have more energy, feel healthier, and lose weight. I highly recommend this dieting tool.

Proof that we know ourselves best.
By Renata Kushnir
My whole life I've been battling with my mother over the foods that I eat. She always made me eat meat and when i told her that I feel sick after red meat she would tell me I'm silly. A couple of years ago I stopped eating oranges and tangerines because I broke out from them and once again my mother laughed at me. She criticized me for not eating a lot of foods. I picked up a copy of the A type food and beverage list and it turns out I was right all along to reject those foods because they are poisonous to me! I fell in love with this diet because what i feel for myself and what the doctor (author) says, is the same thing! (of course giving up cheese and olives will be hard) I can trully relate to this diet.
