No pot holders here! Great little portfolio of projects.

A knit-book junkie, I recently picked up a copy of this little number for my collection. I enjoyed the really interesting mix of projects for beginning and intermediate knitters. I consider myself to be a seasoned knitter who can handle projects with varying difficulties, but I appreciated that the easier patterns weren't just pot-holders and long scarves. I confess that all of the projects didn't jump right out at me, but let's face it, what knitting book can claim that? Besides, there is something more to appreciate about Lily's book than first meets the eye: the incredible attention to detail that goes into every pattern.
I selected the men's raglan sweater to knit up -- chose a cool silk yarn. The pattern itself was easy enough, but what was completely impressive were the way the pieces fit together perfectly, right down to the matching seams. Of note, Lily added this fabulous decrease "tuck" at the shoulder that really made it look professional and downright cool. If you're from the Elizabeth Zimmerman school of knitting, this sort of pattern detail is lost on you (don't get me wrong, Lizzie's my idol). On the other hand, if your idea of a perfect evening is s flawless seam or a perfectly graduated arm, don't overlook this book.

Lots of Nice Designs @ A Great Price

This is a wonderful book aimed at young,fashion conscious knitters. There are 20 projects in the book. I am 40 & have been knitting since 1968 but found plenty of designs I'd like to make--the unisex garter-striped diagonal vest, the cardijacket and the evening cardijacket preeminent among them. I can't imagine wanting to knit shoes or a sports bra, but it's nice to have patterns available should I change my mind. She has designs for garments, socks, household items, stoles, and purses. The designs vary widely in skill required and there is something for everyone, including men. There is a short article about the knitters for whom Chin created the items,with accompanying photograph. And I hope the low price of the book sets a trend!

A workshop with Lily Chin at a bargain price.

This book is like taking a workshop class with Lily Chin, except the price is a bargain and you get to keep a set of detailed notes that Lily herself wrote for you!

As a busy mom, I don't have time to write reviews, but I had to write this one because I don't feel that the reviews written do this book justice.

Reading this book, you learn a lot about how to match a yarn to a project, what to consider during the design process, some special Lily Chin techniques that have worked for her, how to ustom shape a knitted item to your own shape, and many other useful tips and concepts for knitting.

Everytime I read this book over, I learn something new. I have read it several times, and even purchased a second copy just in case my first copy gets damaged or lost.

I would say that this book is similar to reading one of Elizabeth Zimmerman's books, where there is lots of talk about knitting and few fancy looking pictures or garments.

The book was not well marketed in that it seems to be a book aimed at hip knitters looking for hip designs -- in which case, they should have put more money into photography, models, graphics and layout to create a hip look. Instead, they tried to make the production of the book as affordable as possible, so the price would be affordable. But the end result is that the book and the garments don't look snazzy at all.

The patterns included in the book are all well designed basics that we could all use. I think that they would probably much more attractove looking if they were on models or mannekins. I have to say that I haven't had time to knit any of the patterns yet, but I want to do several.

THIS REALLY WORKS!

I have degenerative disc disease, horrific arthritis, and I have had 4 back surgeries. I followed the O diet plan and within 2 months I could walk upstairs without 2 hands on the railing taking one step at a time. I could actually walk up the stairs like a normal person and carry the laundry basket. I could put socks on in the morning when I got up. I don't limp funny anymore when I walk. I would wake up crying happy tears that I was not in pain anymore! This has been a miracle for me. I bought this book for my neurosurgeon who gave up on me. There was nothing more he could do. My next step was a pain clinic. I have no more pain. I feel like I'm 20 years old again! This book is for anyone who has a debilitating arthritis. Give it two months and watch your entire life change for the better. I've been spreading this book title like a new religion. Please get this even for a loved one who is suffering with arthritis.

Fibromyalgia sufferer is helped

I have been suffering from Fibromyalgia for over 15 years. Once I went on the ER4YT diet, my over-all health improved vastly... except I still suffered occasionally from Fibromyalgia. I bought this book, followed the diet & went on the 12 week arthritis protocol that he recommended. Not only did the pain subside during the 12 weeks, but also for the past year it has been much more manageable. The most difficult thing was finding the supplements in the dosages that Dr. D'Adamo recommended. Through the help of the internet I found all of them - most of them from Vitacost.com. It still amazes me that after a year of going on this protocol I am still doing so well. I am an O non-secretor.

Take this book wherever go! This is the one book that you will not be able to do without if you are serious about taking control of your pain associated with all forms of arthritis and fibromyalgia. An absolute must have for the serious "blood type" eater and for all those who are tired of being controlled by their pain!

White churns out another title in the Doc Ford series, this one alternating between compelling action sequences and pointless digressions. At the start of the novel, Marion Ford has settled into the life of a gentleman marine biologist on Florida's Gulf coast, leaving behind his past as an assassin and spy. All this is upended when a pyromaniacal carnival freak kidnaps Ford's son, Lake. The boy's mother, Central American beauty Pilar, tries to overcome their estrangement and turns to Ford for help in rescuing the boy. Seduced by his ex-lover just long enough to be caught in a compromising situation by his current girlfriend, Dewey, Ford is distracted by the sight of Dewey's car as she storms away: "She'd sold her 'Vette and bought a new two-seater Lexus. I can never remember the model. The roadster showed impressive stability as she spun it around in the parking lot." Soon after, Ford finds himself in real trouble-and spouts more extraneous commentary. On the way to saving his son, he reflects on the fauna of Florida and Central America, skin transplants, electroshock therapy, port security and the winter residence of choice for circus people. These might have made great ingredients for another whimsical Carl Hiaasen/Elmore Leonardesque madcap novel, but White's meandering prose isn't tight enough to tie them into a convincing whole.

*Starred Review* Now in its eleventh episode, White's Doc Ford series, starring Sanibel Island marine biologist and veteran special-ops agent Doc Ford, can always be counted on for an entertaining mix of character interplay and straight-ahead action adventure. This time the dial shifts a bit toward the character side of the scale, as Ford revisits various people and issues from his not-quite-past life as a covert operative. The catalyst for all this stock-taking is the kidnapping of the son Ford only recently learned he had and the resurfacing of Pilar, the boy's mother and the great love of Ford's life. The kidnapping plot, in which Ford, with the help of hippie pal Tomlinson, must rescue his son from a serious psycho who likes to burn people, keeps the suspense churning, but the real focus here--for longtime series followers, at least--is on what this latest crisis means to Ford's life with the people he cares about: his son, girlfriend Dewey, the troubled Pilar, and especially Tomlinson, who has his own dark past. As always in White's work, the various bodies of water that surround and intersect Florida take on the multidimensional qualities of fully developed characters, adding not only atmosphere but also context to Ford's ongoing struggle to achieve in his human relationships the sense of equilibrium he has found in the natural world. He's not there yet, but for the reader at least, that's good news: this story is a long way from over. Bill Ott

the power of blood kinship

In Randy Wayne White's latest installment in the Doc Ford series, Doc's son is kidnapped by a psychopathic pyromaniac - Ford must rescue his son before harm is done. As the story progresses, we learn a little more about the past of White's characters - Ford, Tomlinson, and Pilar, Ford's ex-lover and the mother of his son. Throughout the book the issue of "family" is visited and revisited, with all its various meanings and implications. A great theme to tie the sub-plots together, and a brilliant way of providing more depth and detail to the characters. White's descriptions of the coast of southwest Florida give the reader a "you are there" feel to it, while keeping the story moving at a fast pace.
The only issue I had with an otherwise fantastic book was the way in which points would be made but the reader was given resolution only after hints and allusions. While it was effective in keeping me riveted to the story, it was a bit frustrating as the issues were not directly related to the main plot line.
Nonetheless, a really enjoyable read, and the best Ford book since Ten Thousand Islands. Randy Wayne White is certainly evolving into a first-rate writer, as _Tampa Burn_ demonstrates. Highly recommended.

Great story populated by interesting characters

Doc Ford (the protagonist) is fun to read. Period. White does his homework and fills the pages with in-depth information about marine biology, politics, and the environment. While I may sometimes disagree with his interpretations, they are always intelligent and well-thought out. That makes reading his fiction more realistic...in spite of the absolutely insane characters. The ending of this novel is truly open...I went out and bought the next one immediately to see what happened.

It's interesting to watch the characters in this series develop over a period of time. I do agree with an earlier reviewer...read some of the earlier books first. In fact, I'd read them all. The knowledge of the characters makes it much better of a read.

White still has work to do developing these folks. However, it took a "few years" for Travis McGee to flesh out. We can wait a while for Doc.

Best sign of the year!

I read Mary's book as soon as it came out in January. I really wasn't thinking of writing a review because the book was such a treat, I didn't feel that she would need yet another sparkling review.

As I went on Amazon today to order another copy of Sign of the Dove for a friend, I came upon one of the most mean-spirited reviews that I've ever seen anywhere on Amazon. This review sounds a lot more like a personal vendetta than a fair and balanced book review. I would really like to know what book this person from Indiana was reading because it most certainly wasn't the delightful book that I read.

I give Maryrose Occhino's book five stars and recommend it highly. The wit, wisdom and charisma that you will find if you tune into Mary's daily, live call-in show on Sirius 114, or streaming live on [...] is exactly what you will find within the pages of her book.

When reading Mary's book, you will find that she is writing for the everyday person. Her writing style is friendly, upbeat and real. If you tune in to her radio program, you will hear listeners say how much they love her book and how they couldn't put it down once they started reading it. It is a great read and in it, you will learn ways to live a more joyful and positive life.

Awarness and Resolution!

MaryRose has exceeded my expectations with her new book "The Sign of the Dove" She has helped me become more aware of the validations I have been receiving for sometime now and also has helped resolve many unanswered issues in my life. It has been many years since I have sat down and began reading a book and could not put it down until I was finished. The years of experience and the amount of knowledge that she brought into her book is yet one more validation of her gift. I am a true believer that there is no such thing as co-incidence that we are all here to learn and teach during our physical life time. Thank you, MaryRose for a job well-done ~ your angels and guides should be very proud of the work you are doing and the amount of lives you have touch and truly made a difference. :)

Her book gives realistic, down to earth advice which makes one aware of their own inherent gifts and talents. This book is easy to read, uplifting and guaranteed to make you more aware of signs present in your life every day.

Ohhhh my happy heart and mind!!!! The Perfect Rake was ever so darn perfect!!!

From the sadness of the sheltered lives of the sisters to their new world freedom and seeing what could be to Prudence falling into the arms of Gideon to his want of Pru to heavy moments to the light comical moments, I was wrapped up in a historical romantic tale that I want to read again and again.

I smiled and laughed and I inhaled with fear and sorrow. I found joy when Gideon was beside himself as fool after fool didn’t see Prudence for her wholesome splendor. Her stunning soul. I loved his vibe, his words, and his actions. His heart was gold and his mind was all Prudence. He was such a show and tell kind of guy. His actions spoke wonders but his soft, romantic and accurate words matched.

“Plain! Is there something wrong with your eyes? She’s not the slightest bit plain! Those eyes, that smile, that hair-from the top to toe, Prudence Merridew is a rare little gem!”

I can’t even spit out the right words to implore you to read this. I read my highlights and book marks and I’m taking another fall. There is just something about their story, or historical romance that when I love it and can fall so hard it’s much more real than these modern new angst ridden, kiddie argumentative hero/heroine. Not to say I don’t love it, but it’s much the same over and over and these historicals seem to wipe the slate clean and gives me the yearning back for reading romances.

Great romance

Really bad Grandfather! The girls should have run off to London a lot sooner!

Prudence was trying to make the best of a very bad situation, but one of the girls had to marry. She was betrothed to a childhood friend who went to India to seek his fortune.

Gideon was great, he could make her laugh! Otterbuggy was a cad! Or worse. Too bad he did what he did!

Can't wait to see what happens to the rest of the sisters!

Prudence Merridew has four younger sisters, all terribly beautiful. Although she is considered plain, she loves her sisters and would do anything to protect them from their tyrannical grandfather. When opportunity presents itself, Prudence, using forgery and wit, whisks her sisters away to their their Great-Uncle in London. Unfortunately, Great-Uncle Oswald insists Prudence secure a husband before her younger sisters. That Prudence already has a fiance, albeit without her grandfather's approval, is a secret Great-uncle Oswald cannot learn.

Gideon, Lord Carradice, a dashing rake, is amused and intrigued by the spirited young woman that has mistaken him for his cousin, the Duke. Deciding to play along with Prudence and her fictitious story of a secret engagement, Gideon enjoys the farce that ensues, along with the stolen embraces. Finding Prudence enchanting, Gideon's rakish nature struggles with unexpected new feelings. Can he win her heart away from her absent fiance, Phillip Otterbury?

Gideon is not only handsome and sensual, he's very amusing. His perception of Prudence brings a smile to my face. I adore his single-minded infatuation. Smart, witty, and fast thinking, Prudence's stubborn will and loyalty make her a heroine worthy of such a splendid rake!

I am really looking forward to the rest of this series! I must say that while there were times in the story that I wanted to smack Prudence because of her loyalty to the undeserving Phillip, I found the book very satisfying. Ms. Gracie has a talent for adding humor into an already delightful romance. If you are a fan of historical romance, you will enjoy The Perfect Rake.

It's very sad that these sites(none that I would use or visit) would mislead their visitors.

I bought the 2009 version, because I liked having the 2008 version. Just for a forecast of each day, you may feel like $9.99 is a bit more than you care to fork over, especially if the main draw of astrology for you is its 'entertainment' value. However, I really appreciate this sort of thing. It's fun to read a description each day, and to let it pull your attention to a different aspect of life each day. As an added bonus, when I can't decide between two things (say, going to the park on Saturday or Sunday), I find in this handy book, somewhat of a verbal coin toss. What's more, it's convenient to have this in paper form, ready to go in the morning, no clicking, browsing, startup sounds, etc.

Of the 246 pages, 113 are dedicated to the book's purpose of daily horoscopes.

The other 133 pages explain what a cusp is/whether you are one, rising signs, how and why people use astrology today, what exactly a horoscope is (I find a lot of people quick to dismiss astrology don't even understand what astrology, horoscopes, and the zodiac really are) and how they are made, the history of astrology, what astrology says about the 21st century, what each sun sign is like (good and bad), the significance of each planet in astrological terms (what they house, and what sign they rule), what the moon in each sign means, when the moon will appear in each sign this year, how to use this info. as a guide for fishing, health, daily affairs, and planting, a character analysis of Aries, and a yearly forecast of 2009.

I find these sorts of things to be constructive and worth my time, so I would recommend purchasing this book. However, if you are a cynic, rigidly pragmatic (and hey, maybe you have your reasons), or in general, not fond of embracing possibility in all of its concentrations, this book is not for you.

The team must stop nuclear weapons from being sent off. Lots of action in different places plus the return of lady nuclear specalist Kat Garnet. A great story with a wonderful subplot as it shows the inner turmoil a SEAL must feel when confronted with what he does.

Grafton became interested in this case, of an unidentified white female whose decomposed body was discovered near a California quarry. While Grafton was writing the novel, Jane Doe's body was exhumed and a forensic artist did the facial reconstruction, in the hopes that seeing the victim's image might trigger someone's memory. Kinsey is pulled into working on the case when her old friend Con Dolan asks for her help as a favor, to help Stacey Oliphant, an aging, ailing policeman, fulfill his dream of solving the mystery of Jane Doe's murder. There's not much to go on, as the case has been cold for years, yet the trio-Kinsey, Dolan and Stacey-persevere; slowly, leads begin to turn up. Kaye gives a fine performance. While she's well accustomed to reading Kinsey (she's been the audiobook reader for the entire series) and performs that part with gusto here, she also deftly handles the craggy old voices of Dolan and Stacey (although at times it's hard to distinguish between them). By turns sassy, professional and heartbreaking, her portrayal of Grafton's beloved heroine will delight fans.

Q is for Quarry - A Kinsey Millhone Novel

This was the best book in Sue Grafton's alphabet murder mystery series yet. It was based on a real life unsolved homicide that occurred in Santa Barbara County in August 1969. It included illustrations of how the young woman may have looked created by a retired medical illustrator. Even thought the plot was fictional, Sue included many details of this case. Sue hopes that someone will recognize the young woman and come forward with information about her. Fantastic!

A woman and two older men

This novel is like a slow baseball game with two announcers, one giving the play-by-play and the other giving color commentary - in this case long descriptions of passing scenery, people, restaurant menus, etc. This is the 17th novel about private investigator Kinsey Millhone in the fictional city of Santa Teresa, California (set geographically in the location of the real life Santa Barbara). In this case, she teams up with Lieutenant Con Dolan, on medical disability from the Santa Teresa Police Department, and retired Dectective Stacey Oliphant of the Santa Teresa County Sheriff's Office.
The time setting is early in 1987. Kinsey is helping out on an 18-year old unsolved murder case. Con and Stacey had been the men who discovered the body, and they are interested in closing out the case. A new look at the case reveals new evidence. The play-by-play is interesting, but the color commentary seems a bit excessive and makes the story drag. Along the way, Kinsey discovers additional information about her mother's family. A major part of the story is the rehabilitation of Con and Stacey.
The novel has some motion picture potential, where the side commentary could be covered visually. As an added feature, look in the back of the book for the forensic reconstruction of an unidentified murder victim that the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office would like help in identifying.

Two motherless daughters

This is an ambitious book, more satisfying and daring than "P." Kinsey, orphaned at an early age herself, is investigating the long-ago death of a runaway, the kind of girl society allows to fall through the cracks. (Was she with her birth mother? Did she run away? Does anyone who knew her care?) Kinsey was smart enough and lucky enough to build a series of surrogate families -- beginning with her neighbor Henry and now including the two elderly cops. This support system gives her a strength the young murder victim didn't have. There are other women in this story, one is a girl whose home life was also very difficult who dreamt of better, more stable future with the boy next door, another loves too well but not too wisely, a third is an adoring sister who knows more about her brother than she says. Against this backdrop, Kinsey is dealing with her own unresolved feelings about her mother, grandmother, aunts and cousins. The comparison of the lives of these women add texture and substance to the story that is unusual with books of this genre. The only reason I subtracted a star is the mystery itself. I figured out the killer's identity long before Kinsey did -- and I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I wish she put as much work on plot as she did on character.

The Faces of Murder Are Varied and Complex

The above quotation, which J.D. Robb utilizes to introduce this novella, effectively captures the essence of the murders which form the basis of this story. INTERLUDE IN DEATH was originally released in an anthology titled OUT OF THIS WORLD, a collection of futuristic stories by four well known women authors. It can be understood as a standalone story, but its brevity does not allow the amount of character development or background information that is available in the full length novels. Thus, my rating reflects those factors and I believe will be shared by listeners familiar with the series' main characters, who undoubtedly will find this more enjoyable than those unfamiliar with the ... IN DEATH series. This story takes place during the spring of 2059, it was published chronologically after BETRAYAL IN DEATH, the twelfth full-length novel in the series.

Eve Dallas is upset - her commanding officer has placed her in a situation that involves three things that she detests; attending social events, public speaking and off-planet travel. He has scheduled her to make a presentation at a seminar during an interplanetary police conference being held at Roarke's spectacular new Olympia resort. Of course, Roarke is delighted, as he views it as a chance to vacation with her and show off the resort, a trip which she undoubtedly would have refused to make if not for the fact that it was an official request which she could not refuse. When they arrive, Roarke has been energized by the space travel while Eve is exhausted by the tension of the trip and her fantasy of the rocket crashing into a stray meteor and her being burned to a crisp by a fire fed by the rocket fuel. Perhaps the only consolation for Eve is that Lt. Peabody, Feeney and Dr. Mira are all at the welcoming reception. Of course, the reader immediately recognizes that the presence of these familiar characters means that this conference will be anything but a restful interlude for Eve and Roarke, and instead will undoubtedly morph into an INTERLUDE IN DEATH.

Eve immediately meets the legendary Commander Douglas R. Skinner, his wife Belle and his adjutant Bryson Hayes. Skinner was wounded during the urban wars and attained the rank of full Commander by the age of 44. He requests a private meeting with Eve at which he makes known his intense dislike of Roarke and insults her with his comments regarding her lack of judgment and the effect it would have on her career. Eve and Roarke are both amazed at his vehemence and his desire to discredit Eve and destroy Roarke, who of course vows to discover the source of Skinner's hatred in order to protect both Eve and her career given the nature of Skinner's reputation and connections.

Soon, a murder occurs and the evidence points to Roarke or someone in his employ. Eve's desire to pursue the investigation is complicated by the fact that the resort is outside her jurisdiction; she soon learns that the police chief of the resort (hired by Roarke) is a strong willed woman with an agenda of her own, Darcia Angelo. Before long (remember this is only a novella), another murder occurs; then Roarke and Eve are almost killed. Eve gradually uncovers the complicated reaons behind Skinner's obsessive behavior, but not in time to keep she and her team safe from a determined killer intent on revenge.

This is an enjoyable fast moving story, although its limited length means there is less character development and a more straightforward plot than in Robb's novels. Nevertheless, the climactic final scenes are as tense and fast moving as in all the full- length stories. In addition, there are two special treats for readers of the series. First, both Roarke and Eve learn previously unknown and interesting details concerning their fathers. (As series readers know, their ability to overcome the terror of their childhoods has strengthened the bond between them.) In fact, as Dr. Mira sagely summarizes one of the lessons for Eve of this episode is "blood doesn't always tell". Second, the conclusion of this story reveals a much more sentimental side to Eve than the reader usually sees. Her complex reactions to the situation are pitch perfect but quite unusual. In conclusion, as Darcia states so aptly, the violence and subsequent investigation were a "hell of a way [for Eve] to stay out of a workshop"; of course, Eve simply hopes that her next vacation will be on her beloved streets of NY.

As usual, Susan Erickson does a superb job as narrator of the story. As a fan of the series who has been gradually attempting to complete the volumes which I have not read, I surprisingly find that I have come to prefer the audio version to the print version. I would therefore suggest that this unabridged CD version is also an easy way for other readers to discover whether they share my enthusiasm for Erickson's narration. The shorter length (only three CDs which total approximately three hours) makes the price very affordable and means a much shorter time commitment than the approximately ten hours of the unabridged novels. In addition, the Brilliance Audio format of very short tracks (average under one minute each but no breaks noticeable to the listener) is incredibly convenient if at times you need to listen in short segments or might be interrupted unexpectedly. Finally, I strongly suggest that new readers interested in the series read (or listen to) at least the first two books in the series (NAKED IN DEATH and GLORY IN DEATH) before sampling the later stories in the series. While I do not believe those are the best entries, they are very good and if not read first the later stories (including this one) contain some potential spoilers regarding Eve's and Roarke's childhoods.
