fascinating -- but only if you're a true crossword addict

I wouldn't call this book particularly well written. There's some history, but the book doesn't provide a long, captivating narrative of the development of the puzzle, or a psychoanalysis of the folks who become addicted to their daily puzzle. Rather, the book is more or less a collection of comments and insight from many of the creators of currently-published crosswords -- how they got into puzzle creation, how they sold their first puzzle, how long it takes them to solve the Sunday NY Times puzzle, etc. The book is behind-the-scenes reality show on crossword puzzles. After reading it, you'll have a good sense of how puzzles are created, how they are edited, what makes a puzzle good, what makes a puzzle bad (or unpublishable), and how the daily crossword puzzle ends up as a final product in your morning newspaper. You'll learn about the preferences of different editors (now I finally know why my collections of NY Times crosswords edited by Will Shortz are SO MUCH MORE FUN TO SOLVE than the NY Times crosswords edited by Eugene Maleska). You'll learn about the evils of "crosswordese" (if you're reading this -- you know what I'm talking about -- words like etui). The book contains biographical shorts of the various crossworders who contributed -- they come from varied backgrounds, from Will Shortz, who majored in crossword puzzles in college (seriously) to dentists and physical therapists and lawyers who got sucked in by their hobby. The book also contains some very good puzzles and their solutions -- though I wouldn't recommend this book if your only interest in in solving puzzles. Overall, a great selection if you want to get to know the clever people and the detailed process that deliver crossword puzzles to the rest of us -- it may be of limited interest to anyone else.

Great Fun for the Casual Crossword Puzzle Fan!

Caution: This book contains coarse words that would never appear in The New York Times crossword puzzle.
Most people who occasionally do crossword puzzles are bound to have certain questions such as:
(1) How are the puzzles constructed?
(2) What do editors do with puzzles submitted to them?
(3) What were the famous puzzle editors like in person?
(4) What do the best puzzle solvers do to make faster progress?
(5) How to solvers prepare for contests?
(6) What reference books do constructors and the best solvers use?
(7) What are the most common short words used in puzzles?
(8) How should unusual clues be interpreted?
(9) How should I attack unusual puzzles?
Those who have wanted to know more about these and many other interesting questions will find many interesting answers from a variety of perspectives in this multifaceted book.
The book contains a fine combination of history, profiles, interviews, answers to common questions by many experts, and perspectives on a variety of crossword puzzles. In addition, you will be pleased to know that the book also provides a number of puzzles and answers to entertain you. For some of the famous puzzles, there are also comments about the puzzle by the constructor.
My favorite part was the section on how to construct puzzles, with many references to computer programs and on-line resources to help. I have always wanted to try my hand at a puzzle, and this shows me the basic elements. I'm sure it will be very difficult, but personally rewarding.
You will also find a good appendix on various resources, suggested readings, a glossary, a brief summary of factoids about words that appear frequently, and biographies and photographs of constructors and editors.
The tone of the book is very down to earth. You will learn about the mistakes, blind spots, and foibles of those involved with crossword puzzles, as well as their successes. It almost felt like reading a series of People magazine issues just on crossword puzzles.
This book will be a favorite gift over the next year or so for those who enjoy puzzles, but have not read very much about them.
After you finish puzzling your way through this book to greater understanding of how to enjoy crossword puzzles, I suggest that you think about how they could be changed to become even more fun? What's missing, from your point of view? What is there too much of?

To add to his troubles, Stone's ex-wife, Jennifer, is seeking his protection against a stalker/rapist. Overwhelmed, Stone asks current girlfriend, Boston PI Sunny Randall, to watch over Jennifer while he tries to solve the two murders. Over the years Parker has honed his writing into its own minimalist art form, conveying more meaning in one line than many authors do with pages of prose. Unfortunately, Sowers doesn't handle that prose as well as one might hope. At times his character voices run together, making it difficult to distinguish which character is talking in a scene. And, even though he has a fine speaking voice, he misses the clipped, cynical delivery that gives the Parker books their cool, dry wit.

In a parallel plot, Stone attends to the needs of his ex-wife, Jenn, who alleges she was raped and claims she is being stalked by her attacker. Unable to cope with the murders and the rape, Stone calls on private investigator Sunny Randall--a sometime lover--to help with Jenn. Obsessive, sometimes unhealthy love is a recurring theme in Parker's work. In his Spenser novels, the protagonist and his lover have come through the tough times intact. Stone and Jenn have a strong but deleterious bond and are in the midst of a trying emotional journey to an unknown destination. This is Parker's most complex, ambitious novel in years. Spenser is always the toughest, coolest guy in the room. Jesse Stone sometimes seems like the toughest, coolest guy in the room, but he knows he's not. Jesse Stone in Paradise

This is the last book I will ever purchase by Mr. Parker, after a lifetime of buying his hardcovers. The reason? His ridiculous and unreal mooning over a really unlikeable, unbelievable ex-wife which serves only to detract from the real character of Jesse Stone.

We like to think of Jesse Stone as a solver of problems: he is doing just that now in Paradise, MA...it is unreal to believe that, five books later he has come no further than the juvenile pining portrayed by Mr. Parker in this book. It seems to be getting worse, rather than better which only serves to make us feel Jesse is going backwards....and we do not want to believe that for a moment.

Hopefully, Mr. Parker will find a really good shrink and clear his head of this unproductive mess. Then, we can concentrate and the terrific plot and story lines he brings us and not be sidetracked by the dumbdown of an unbelievable side story. Too many pages on too little reality.

I enjoy the Jesse Stone character, so I enjoyed the book. This is light reading for me and just what I needed to relax and distract me from the world. Well worth the time to read. This would be a good one to see on the Jesse Stone TV series, too.

Who ARE these women?

Jenn and Sunny, I mean. I have never met a woman like either of them. (And I've been friends with females, and been one myself, for my entire life!) Jenn is a promiscuous, ambitious weathergirl/newscaster who will sleep with anyone to get ahead, but who has no interest in current affairs, her industry or the goings-on at her own station. Huh? (Towards the end of the book, Jenn reports having heard about the resolution of Jesse's case "on the news," an odd choice of words for a woman who theoretically spends hours each day in a news room.) Yet, like Susan in the Spenser books, every man, woman and child who meets her admires her and likes her. Okeedokee. Then we have Sunny. Bright, attractive and self-reliant, she remains in love with her ex-husband Richie, even though he has remarried and has a baby on the way (at least his wife was pregnant in a recent Sunny novel; no mention of it here). Why can't she move on? Does the Good Lord need to write IT'S OVER on her forehead? Even better, Parker has these two women, who are sharing the same man, spend enormous amounts of time together and even become fond of one another. The former is highly implausible, the latter rings completely false.

Also, who is paying Sunny for her time protecting Jenn? She's doing all this for Jesse? For sisterhood? For free?

The central mystery of the book -- the murder of a radio/TV personality -- captured my imagination. Especially because the killers believed the cops in Paradise, MA, are all yahoos and easy to fool. I enjoyed the scenes in the police station and when law enforcement is on the trail of the killers.

But the misogyny and complete lack of credibility with which Jenn and Sunny are treated is disturbing.

Ruby (Fax Me a Bagel), a plump-and-proud rabbi's widow and part-owner of a bagel shop in Eternal, TX, wins a free Caribbean cruise trip sponsored by her temple. Several disadvantages become apparent. First, it's a budget cruise put together by the temple's ubiquitous control freak. Second, the professor in charge of their study of Caribbean Jews collapses and dies just before boarding. Then, during a week of clouds and rain, someone attacks Ruby while she's taking pictures. The narrative proceeds with wild abandon, blatant cruise-bashing, and much humor, so this should provide the rest and relaxation the doctor ordered.

Good Idea For A Book Series, But Not Well Done

I really wanted to like this, but Ruby is getting less likeable with each book in this series. This is a problem since she is the narrator and main character. The story is improbable and the characters are silly. A fast, light read that will not stay with you as long as a hot pastrami sandwich, or even a bagel. Too bad. Maybe the next one (if there is one) will be better.

Don't buy for me, hot pastrami

The bibliophile's eternal question -- to buy or not to buy (or borrow from the library), I would say the answer here is: borrow. Worth reading. A fun read. But that's it.
Ruby, the former rabbi's wife, embarks on a cruise with the congregants from hell and their current rabbi who has the leadership ability of Jello. The entire cruise quickly turns hellish when Ruby stumbles onto some nefarious goings-on. The book's downside: The congregants are unbelievable to the point of being insulting caricatures. The plot has a tendency to stray and meander. But, it's worth sticking with because it does leave you (and Ruby literally) dying to know the truth. Plus, Ruby has a delightfully quick, sarcastic wit and manages to deliver some wicked observations and comments which made me "kvell" (because if I'd been in her place, I wouldn't have thought of that perfect line until 16 hours later ... of course she does have the luxury of being a character in a book, but nonetheless it's always refreshing to spend time with someone who won't suffer fools gladly and that's Ruby.) So, definitely a fun read, you'll be treated to some delicious and hilarious lines and a plot that does turn interesting around p. 100. A more worthwhile "borrow" than "buy." This likely isn't a book you'll need or want to read again. But, I don't think you'll regret the time you spent reading it.

maybe if I'd read the previous books in the series....

I found most of the characters in "Don't Cry For Me Hot Pastrami" to be one-dimensional (or worse, no dimensional, just a flat out stereotype) but maybe if I'd read the previous books in the series I'd know better who was who and what made them tick. Maybe. Ruby's narration style is abrupt and leaves a lot of what motivates her to the imagination, and the other characters are even less clear. The description of the cruise the Temple Rita group is on is unbelievable to the point that it's not really funny, people on a cruise with the food described would be performing a mutiny of epic proportions! This is all too bad, because the mystery plot is pretty good. Fortunately, the writing itself is decent, no dumb grammar or usage mistakes, just too much improbability in the setting and rather weak support on the characterization front.

This history of American helicopters in combat manages to be both readable and comprehensive. Comprehensive because it provides not only narratives of operations but also technical data on the machines used in those operations, from Burma in 1944, where early Sikorskis flew, to contemporary Afghanistan, in which late Sikorskis have figured. Readable because it is a series of narratives by actual helicopter operators charged with, for instance, rescuing British wounded and American liaison pilots in Burma, and moving Special Operations troops in Afghanistan. In between are accounts, always accompanied by illustrations of all the hardware, of medevacs in Korea, the seminal consequences of air mobility in Vietnam, and the successive generations of deadly gunships, ending with the Apaches and SuperCobras now serving in southwest Asia. Robert Dorr writes the true history of the amazing helicopter and the people who flew them. His painstaking interviews and the facts gathered make this a must reading for anyone who has a friend or family member who flew choppers. Mr. Dorr has made a valuable contribution to the memory of real heros and their daily struggles between keepng the ship flying and completing the mission. Thanks, Bob, for using your skills for the benefit of so many.

From Eggbeaters to Choppers

Author Bob Dorr has a passion for military aircraft, and that passion is evident in his most recent book, "Chopper." The book, as promised in its subtitle, takes the reader from the earliest relatively primitive "eggbeaters" in Burma during World War II, through Korea, Vietnam, and up to today's advanced helicopters now active in Iraq. As usual, Bob has impeccably researched his subject, not only by pursuit of the existing written word, but through extensive interviews and actual flights in some of the ships.

There are two sets of heroes in this work. First of all are the helicopters which have proved themselves invaluable on the battle field, as observation platforms, as medical evacuation workhorses, as troop transports, as gun platforms. The author places useful sidebars providing technical information about each of the helicopters he discusses. Some helicopters were truly heroic birds - keeping in the air no matter how much incoming ordinance they received. But it is the other set of heroes that make this book fascinating to the general reader. These are the human heroes, the pilots and crews of helicopters fighting in many theaters. Bob Dorr conducted seventy seven interviews with these incredible men, and accurately records their accounts of helicopter missions. All retain the actual words of the aviators. Some accounts are thoughtful, almost philosophical; accounts by more recent aviators are less so, some sounding a little like teenagers discussing their newest video game. But all demonstrate the skill and valor of men fighting in the nation's uniform. Some missions are described alternately by several actors, each from a different view point. The author helps the reader keep up with these transitions by useful "Who's Who" sidebars.

If I were to fault the book in any way, it is to note the absence of a Table of Contents. The publisher was unhelpful by deleting the Table that the author had submitted with his manuscript.

I recommend this book not only to those with specific interest in helicopters, but also to the general reader who will be interested in, and educated by, the first person accounts of the adventure, adrenalin and dangers of military aviation.

Belongs on the shelf of everyone interested in military aviation history

Dorr's "Chopper" belongs on the shelf of everyone interested in military aviation history and the men who were part of it. Dorr interviewed more than 75 pilots and crewmen and these individuals come to life as their remarkable stories are told in this very readable book.

"Chopper" is laid out chronologically. It starts behind enemy lines in Burma in 1944, when a young American pilot named Harman and a mechanic named Phelan flew a Sikorsky "R-4" helicopter on what was apparently the first ever U.S. military helicopter rescue. From here on out, the role played by "whirlybirds" in almost every major U.S. military operation is examined, including: air rescue missions during the Korean War, troop airlift operations in Vietnam, heliborne assaults in Afghanistan and helicopter attacks in Iraq.

I liked "Chopper" because it lets each pilot, mechanic, and crewman tell his story in his own words, and this makes for a readable, entertaining, and often exciting journey through history. All the services get their due as well---Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine helicopter pilots and aircrew are all part of Dorr's narrative.

From what I can tell, "Chopper" also is a true "first" in the history of book publishing: the first book to compile first-person accounts of helicopter pilots and crews who flew military rescue and combat missions; the first book to tell the comprehensive story of military helicopter operations from World War II to the current war on terror; and the first book to combine these personal histories with technical data on each helicopter flown or crewed.

General readers, amateur historians, and professional researches will find this book well worth the money.

The North Koreans are back! I really enjoyed how this plot weaved in and out. I also enjoyed the plot with Mahanani and his gambling debts. Really thought for a while he would end up like another team member did in another book - dead! Then near the end Murdock looks up injuries and decides Lam has had the most. He says he is going to talk to him to decide if he will be replaced as point man/tracker but it never materializes yet in the next book he seems to be pulled from the position at least for a while. Also don't understand why Jaybird is Murdock's favorite. He has broken the law (multiple times arrested) once in Israel while they are on a mission. Murdock acts like he is upset and then pats him on the back and laughs with him. I don't think the real seals would show that tolerance over and over. Understand the stress that comes with this career but as a retired Police Officer I would have been unemployed after this many infractions not patted on the back. May sound like I didn't like the book but really enjoyed the way the way it was written.

A fantastic fast moving SEAL Team seven adventure. A good read.

If you are a fan of the U.S. Navy SEALS, as I have always been, and are looking for a page turning novel, you will love this book. It is well-written and the story flows beautifully. This is the first book I have ever read in this SEAL TEAM SEVEN series by Keith Douglas, but it wont be my last. The writer clearly understands how to weave a naval military story and you feel like you are there with the SEAL team. This tale is about the North Koreans attacking various parts of the United States through their covert location on an oil-rig platform.

The book even has a 17 page glossary at the end of the book so you can understand U.S. NAVY SEAL terms as you read the book. In conclusion, if you like military, expecially Navy SEAL novels, you will love this book. As a former regular U.S. Navy veteran, (Not a SEAL unfortunately) I highly recommend this book.

As a work of fiction I really enjoy his Seal series

I served in the British Armed Forces for a total of 23 years, and was involved in armed combat on many occasions serving with the SAS amongst others. Perhaps Keith Douglas should have done a little more research, there isn't a soldier or sailor in the world who could maintain the fighting standards of his Seals. Should any country have servicemen of their supposed ability and courage they could rule the universe without any difficulty. As a work of fiction I really enjoy his Seal series, a pity that he does not make them a little more realistic?

Three Delights!

To use the publisher's words, this is a "paranormal collection of three sexy, original stories of men who are totally off-limits", a bit misleading as only the third one can be described as paranormal; the first story is set in the past and the second in the present, with no paranormal elements.

In "Barabrian", Lady Elen of Godeuart's home is besieged by Vikings, but her ingeniousness saves it. Ivar Hrolf is incensed by her defensive maneuver (it maimed some Vikings...), the next night he steals into her home and kidnaps her to make her his bed slave. I tell no more of this story, you go read it. Worth it!

As for "Nemesis", well, it is worth it also! Diane Sullivan, after 11 years of unsuccessfully trying to be an actress, has decided to move on to something else with her small daughter. To start this new life on the right foot however, she needs money, so she signs up as a waitress on a cruise ship, for one cruise... which pays so well because she has to be naked for the whole trip. But it's ok: as long as she doesn't have to sleep with anyone she doesn't want to, she's all right. All right that is, until Garek Ennis boards the ship, the Garek Ennis who tormented her in high school, the Garek Ennis she had such a big crush on despite his being so nasty. As for Garek's reaction when he sees her... no, I shall tell no more of it either. Go read it too!

"Naughty Nancy" was my favorite story of this book, mainly because of Vorik F'al Vader, eighteen-years-old and a Khan-Gori newly full-grown, so eager for his first yenni hunt!(yenni=luscious and stupid female animal whose food is male seed...) Although the beginning of the story is awkward and the seventh dimension could use a bit more description, the shape-changing predator who find Nancy there is just too cute/funny!

I first came accross JB in the "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down" and "Palying Easy To Get" anthologies; I bought them for Sherrilyn Kenyon, but it's J. Black stories which ended up being my favorites. Despite sketchy worlds and holey plots, I really ENJOY her writing: her heroines are strong, resourceful and thoughtful; as for her heroes... I want one! They're tender, strong **darn it, is there any way to write this without sounding soppy and cliché?!?** and cute, an excellent counterpart to the heroines. (Better yet, we don't feel they're wasted on them!)

An Average Showing

Three short stories make up the content of this rather average read by one of today's hottest romance authors.

In the story "Barbarian" Lady Elen of Godeuart has been taken captive by Ivar. At one time these two were betrothed but Elen is not aware of this and when Ivar makes a claim to her she thinks he is out of his mind. But what happens when Elen starts to feel something for her Viking master?

In the story "Nemesis" Diane needs to rethink her plans regarding her decision to take a cruise on the Rhine as waitress in the buff especially when her high school nemesis boards the ship. Now Diane needs to deal with Garek Ennis and the feelings he makes her feel.

In the story "Naught Nancy" Nancy Lombardo dresses up as Xena for a Halloween party but this is not just any kind of party. She is about to be swept off her feet by a witch and their destination is a planet that is not earth. And their mutual attraction is out of this world.

Sadly these three stories are only average and not what most readers expect from Ms. Black. There is very little romance and the execution of these stories leaves them stiff and instead of sizzling heat...the heat here fizzles. Ms. Black is capable of much better fare and if you are new to this talented author I encourage you to pick up some of her pervious titles.

He falls in love with a most unlikely mate, an anthropologist named Cassie Barrett, while on location in Tanzania. Alex sweeps modest Cassie off her sneaker-clad feet and they marry, but Mr. Sex Symbol turns out to be a wife beater. Cassie endures his rage and violence even after one particularly brutal beating causes her to miscarry, but when Alex goes after her during her second pregnancy, she runs away. There is, however, one complication--a blow to the head has brought on amnesia, and Cassie doesn't know who she is. Picoult manages to use this melodramatic flourish to fine effect as she ushers in the novel's hero, Will Flying Horse, a Sioux who rescues Cassie by bringing her to the South Dakota reservation he so eagerly escaped. Beneath the glitzy trappings, this is a riveting, unfailingly intelligent, and undeniably literary psychological drama. Donna Seaman

Simplistic and Disappointing

A complex issue (marital physical abuse) was reduced to simplistic cliches in Picture Perfect. This book was disappointing on many different levels and finishing it was a chore. The writing was uninspired, the characters were not developed and the various "love at first sight" aspects were not believable. Most offensive, though, was how the book glamorized the idea that it's a gift of love to allow yourself to be brutally beaten to help ease your spouse's emotional pain. This theme was then reinforced with Cassie's friend Will's dance designed to take on Cassie's pain himself. With its over-simplification I found the book to be distasteful and insulting to those who are living with the reality and complexity of abuse.

Intriguing, contemporary themes are interwoven in this book. The characters are well developed and believable, and the book has been well researched in the fields of anthropology and Native American cultures.

Goddess of Light

P.C. Cast Goddess Summoning series seems to be based on simple story lines and uncomplicated characters. This book follows that lead. Normally, I would not judge so harshly since the book was pretty much what I expected after reading Goddess of Spring and Goddess of the Sea but Cast did one thing that I cannot stand, name dropping. The book read like an advertisement, especially at the beginning thought she did lay off the name brands towards the end.

Pamela was not a leading lady I cared for. First, she was sort of a snob, since it her character that mentally noticed all the name brands. She also seemed very judgmental toward her client and men in general. She did tone down as the romance progressed, but I don't think she did anything to earn Apollo.

Apollo was a nice leading man but I can't figure out why he has one conversation with Pamela and knows that she is his soul mate. The man has lived for eons and has never found one person more interesting than Pamela? Seriously?

Artemis came off exactly how the author wrote her. Self assured, selfish, self absorbed. She was an excellent supporting character.

Bacchus read as disgusting. The visual imagery was shuddering. As an antagonistic for the book he was superb. Cast wrote him as a hateful, abusive character and he was just that. The reasons why he was targeting Apollo and Pamela are shaky, though jealousy has always been more than enough motivator; it just seemed to come up in the story suddenly and without explanation.

A true romance!

I loved this book.

Recovering from a smoothering, emotionally abusive marriage, interior designer Pamela Grey goes to Las Vegas to meet with a new client and, while wishing for true romance after too many glasses of wine, she accidentally invokes the reluctant aid of the Goddess Artemis.

The God Apollo, after witnessing the true love between Hades, God of the Underworld, and a mortal woman (from 'Goddess of Spring'), has decided there is something missing in his life. On a visit to the 'Kingdom of Las Vegas', his twin sister Artemis is entangled in a mortal's wish for romance and he realizes this might be the answer to his quest for something 'more'.

They come together both hoping to find a 'real' person, a soul mate who can fulfil the secret desire for love inside of each of them.

'Goddess of Light' highlights a woman's struggle to overcome her fear of being deceived again by love and a man's need to be completed by love. Add to this the fun and frolic of Las Vegas, Artemis's conflict between her selfish nature and love for her brother, E.D. Faust's (Pamela's client) strange combination of eccentricities and wisdom, Pamela's gay assistant's caustic humour and Dionysus's resentment at having 'his' realm of Las Vegas invaded by the other deities and the story becomes a fast-paced romantic tale of laughter and love entwined with wonder and danger.

The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I would have preferred something closer to the 'Goddess of Spring's ending although I have to admit Apollo's sacrifice was in line with what he said he wanted all along.

This is book three of PC. cast Goddess series. Im still in favor of Book 2 out of all 3 however this book is still an excellent read. I even cried with this one.

Worst of the Clancy Written Jack Ryan Series - Disappointed

I am a huge Clancy fan and am in the middle of reading all the books he wrote over again and this has to be his worst. Unfortunately I didn't realize this was a prequel of sorts so I re-read them sort of in the wrong order. I was waiting for the typical "heart pounding out of my chest" part and never found it. Sure, there is about 3 pages that's piqued my interest towards the end, but the rest was just dialog and creating of characters whom I really didn't care about. I can see there was supposed to be at least one or two books after this one, but obviously he never got around to writing them. I agree with a previous reviewer - many parts of this did not seem like Clancy at all and that was sad and disappointing. I'll continue with The Bear and The Dragon and then the Rainbow Six books but not likely to read the co-authored books. It's just not in the Clancy style and this one didn't seem to be either.

Least impressive of the series

It is gratifying (and, to me, somewhat surprising) that virtually all the reviewers here have made the same points, because they are very much on target. This is the most disappointing of the Clancy series. I'm not saying "worst" only because Clancy is technically good enough so that anything he writes himself (but not the excreble stuff written by others for which he sells his name) is at least readable.
But Red Rabbit will be a major, major let down for Clancy's legions of fans. Whether or not you liked the somewhat racist and hyper-sexual "Bear and Dragon", you'll find that in this book Jack Ryan is quite different than anyone you've seen before. He is whining, foul-mouthed, not particularly security conscious (400 pages are devoted to covering up an ultra-top-secret defection, and then Ryan blithely gossips about it to a bunch of junior CIA guys??), and endlessly repetitive. Because this novel had to fit in between Patriot Games and Red October, and yet hadn't been referenced in any of the other books, the result is a relatively unimportant (in the Clancy universe) episode, which has the effect of marking time in the lives of the usual characters.
Much as I love the series (even with Clancy's politics-on-his-sleeve, plug-his-friends, black-and-white jingoism) I'm afraid that something went far astray here. Maybe he has run out of steam with Jack, or he's written himself into a corner, or he just did this for the money. But the result is something that should be avoided by all new readers and most casual readers. The die hard fans will, of course, need to read this one for completeness' sake, but anyone else will unquestionably wonder what all the fuss is about.
In the future, I think that most of Clancy's fans would hope that he either comes up with some plausible future stuff after Bear and Dragon, or gives us some more Rainbow adventures, or perhaps gives us some Mr. Clark black operations in the years between Remorse and October. He might even, if necessary, jettison the whole lot and write about something else entirely. But I'm really afraid that one more sleeper like this one has the potential to completely ruin the franchise.

Not up to the usual Clancy standards

At his best, Tom Clancy has written impossible-to-put down novels like 'Cardinal of the Kremlin', 'Clear and Present Danger', and 'Sum of All Fears'. These books showcased Clancy's ability to juggle multiple, often disparate plot threads, before bringing them together in an edge-of-your-seat denouement. Unfortunately for Clancy fans, 'Red Rabbit' represents a nadir in Clancy's career.
Taking its plot from the loopy right-wing notion that the KGB conspired in the attempted assassination of the Pope in the early '80s, is the novel's major flaw. Since we already know how that turned out, much of the suspense that is a hallmark of Clancy's writing is absent. The story is told in four closely related plot threads: the Politburo's scheming, the defection of a KGB insider, the assistance of the Foleys in the defection, and Jack Ryan's behind the scenes analysis of the situation.
Previous Clancy novels have built suspense and anticipation on Burns's principle of the best laid plans going astray. A tiny flaw in the plans of the Good Guys or the Bad Guys leads to major consequences. In 'Red Rabbit', this suspense never materializes. What should have been an exciting, final hundred pages describing the exfiltration of the KGB agent is instead a straightforward read in which everything goes according to plan. Apart from the agent, none of the principle characters are ever in danger; it's a bit like playing a video game in "god mode."
Compounding this is a repetitiveness in Clancy's prose that quickly becomes annoying. We are told innumerable times that Jack's wife's job is "cutting eyeballs." Mary Pat's cover as a ditzy blonde is explained again and again. The bizarreness of the Hungarian language is discussed ad nauseum. The overall effect is that Clancy sketched out a plot, and had a team of ghost writers flesh out the details. Clearly a heavy-handed editor was needed to reign in this project. Alas, doing so would probably have cut a 618 page novel down to a concise, nonrepetitive 300-page effort that would be too atypical of the standard Clancy tome.
Despite its repetitiveness, and a needless digression into the horrors of socialized medicine, it's still a good read. Clancy at his worst still exceeds lesser espionage writers. His descriptions of spy "tradecraft" are excellent, expanding on many of the descriptions of the superior 'Cardinal of the Kremlin'. Hard-core Clancy fans are sure to enjoy it, but for those new to Clancy's writing, one of his earlier novels would be a better choice.
