From Publishers Weekly
Law and OrderSan Francisco personal injury lawyer Stephen M. Murphy has talked with dozens of JDs-turned-authors over the years, and in Their Word Is Law: Bestselling Lawyer-Novelists Talk About Their Craft, he gathers their pearls of wisdom into an anthology of interviews. Novelists, both famous and not reflect on their craft in engaging terms, and Murphy is a fine cross-examiner: the bestselling David Baldacci discusses breaking into fiction and laughingly deems himself a "twelve-year overnight success," while prolific author and "Living Landmark" Louis Auchincloss rather snobbishly disdains the notion of reading books by "lawyer-hyphen-authors." A foreword by Steve Martini (the author of Jury and other novels also contributes an interview) highly praising Murphy should boost sales.

From Booklist
A handful of writers have indelibly marked the booming genre of the legal thriller. San Francisco attorney Murphy, a self-proclaimed superfan of the genre, began interviewing lawyer-authors in 1988 for a local bar association publication. Fascinated by these writers' dual professional roles, he wondered which came first for them, law or writing. He assumed that the law prompted putting pen to paper, but his first interviewee, Scott Turow, whom he considers the father of the current legal-thriller movement, was a writer first. Not every subject's story was the same, of course, and in interviewing 31 writers, Murphy discovered a range of paths to getting published. Louis Auchincloss considers the fact that he is a lawyer to be entirely separate from his writing (and, in fact, he scorns the legal-thriller genre). Some interviews are a few years old, so the subjects aren't talking about their latest hits, but that doesn't make the conversations any less fascinating. Brief biographies, sometimes an excerpt, and bibliographies accompany the talks. Mary Frances Wilkens

Legal/Author Stars Before They Were Stars!
By Leeann M. Abbott
I am a HUGE Legal Fiction fan and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Stephen Murphy took a personal curiosity/hobby and published it for the public to enjoy. The interviews with several of the authors were at the beginning of their careers, before they were MEGA-STARS which I find fascinating, because you get to see an insight in to the real person and how they work before fame changed them. The questions were insightful and exactly what I wanted to know about many of the characters these authors made famous. Many of the questions I have never heard asked before in any of the interviews these authors have given since then. Martini had it correct, if you are a legal author fan you will love this book!

woefully out of date
By L. Francos
This book was published in 2002, yet some of the interviews date back to the late 80's. About 75% took place in 1995 or earlier! All Grisham can talk about is The Firm because the interview took place in 1991.

I was also disappointed by the content. I'm a fan of many of these authors because I enjoy reading about the law. These interviews seemed to be almost purely promotional pieces for whatever work the authors had published at the time and referred very little to their legal experiences.

It makes you want to read and write
By J. Kertesz
I loved this book. It explained me (the writer) what motivates writers. Intervieuwing thirty one of them, from legal profession abandoned for writing or doing the two of it parallel, Murphy's book had only one problem with me: I do want now to read almost all author's books.
I just hope someone did it with other kind of writing too.
It will take time, but I'll have to see myself, how they wrote their books. It is a fascinating book and opening the appetite, as well to me reader, as giving hints to me writer.
