From Publishers Weekly
This fascinating investigation into what makes abusive men tick is alarming, but its candid handling of a difficult subject makes it a valuable resource for professionals and victims alike. Bancroft, the former codirector of Emerge, the nation's first program for abusive men, has specialized in domestic violence for 15 years, and his understanding of his subject and audience is apparent on every page. "One of the prevalent features of life with an angry or controlling partner is that he frequently tells you what you should think and tries to get you to doubt or devalue your own perceptions and beliefs," he writes. "I would not like to see your experience with this book re-create that unhealthy dynamic. So the top point to bear in mind as you read [this book] is to listen carefully to what I am saying, but always to think for yourself." He maintains this level of sensitivity and even empathy throughout discussions on the nature of abusive thinking, how abusive men manipulate their families and the legal system and whether or not they can ever be cured. Jargon-free analysis is frequently broken up by interesting first-person accounts and boxes that distill in-depth information into simple checklists. Bancroft's book promises to be a beacon of calm and sanity for many storm-tossed families.

From Library Journal
Bancroft, a former codirector of Emerge, the first U.S. program for abusive men, and a 15-year veteran of work with abusive men, reminds readers that each year in this country, two to four million women are assaulted by their partners and that at least one out of three American women will be a victim of violence by a husband or boyfriend at some point in her life. His valuable resource covers early warning signs, ten abusive personality types, the abusive mentality, problems with getting help from the legal system, and the long, complex process of change. After dispelling 17 myths about abusive personalities, he sheds light on the origin of the abuser's values and beliefs, which he finds to be a better explanation of abusive behavior than reference to psychological problems. Bancroft extends his approach to problematic gay and lesbian relationships as well, making the book that much more useful and empowering. This is essential reading for those in the helping professions and highly recommended for all libraries, especially those in communities with emergency shelter programs. Dale Farris, Groves, TX

Review
“Bancroft has opened a window into the thinking of abusive men, and his book helps open a door out of abusive relationships.”—Gavin de Becker, New York Times bestselling author of The Gift of Fear and Fear Less

“Most books about abuse in relationships focus on women—how they’re hurt, why they stay. As important as these questions are, they can also distract us from the heart of the problem. Bancroft boldly asks—and brilliantly answers—the most important questions of all: Why do so many men abuse women? What can be done about it? This book is desperately needed and long overdue.”—Jackson Katz, creator of the award-winning video Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity

what a great book!
By Sammy Madison
The question "why did the person who claimed to love me so much attempt to destroy me" has led me to read and think a lot about the contents of hundreds of books. This is one of the best I have read. Lundy Bancroft gives a very simple and sensible answer: entitlement and lack of respect. The abuser feels entitled to a fantasy woman, who will gratefully smooth the way for him, providing him with a financial support, a clean, comfortable house, good food, unconditional emotional support, and a perfect, attractive, sex partner willing to do anything to please him. To obtain this, all he has to do is attract and court a woman who he fantasizes is going to make this happen. Saying the words "I love you" and a year or so of good behavior is a pretty cheap price to obtain a perfect servant for life. When the woman, who has no idea of his agenda, fails to live up to his fantasy, he concludes that he has been ripped off, that she has lied to him and failed him, and then he proceeds to try to destroy her. He may shove her, hit her, scream at her, or try to make her feel worthless or even insane. This is called devaluation. Lundy Bancroft lists the warning signs of a potentially abusive suitor, and a lot of misery would be eliminated if dating women were given this list to memorize. As well as explaining what motivates abusers, the book also reveals a lot about the methodical tactics of abuse that I did not find in many other books, particularly mind-boggling yet common tactics such as gaslighting the victim and alienating the victim from her friends and family through lies and manipulation. Abuse is not just physical violence. The chapter on how the abuser gets others such as the police and court officials to help in his abuse is simply horrifying. I would highly recommend this book to teens and women dating, women who feel that their partner is emotionally or physically abusing them, and therapists, police, and court personnel.

The most practical book about abuse on the market
By Mom of 3
I have read about 7 books about abuse, and this one is the best. The book is comprehensive, and is excellent at illustrating the uniqueness and personality traits of abusers and the wide range of tactics that they employ. This focus on abuse was helpful to me, because in other books I read that attempted to categorize abusive men, I had a hard time categorizing my psychologically abusive ex-husband, who didn't seem to fit neatly into any category that the author listed - which really frustrated me and planted seeds of doubt about my knowledge of abuse. This book made clear that abusive men don't necessarily neatly fit into categories, but draw from different categories and that each specializes in an area(s) of control particular to his own individual personality. This book does not go into great depth about why abusers do what they do - there are other authors who do explore that in great depth (Patricia Evans comes to mind). Mr. Bancroft's book is extremely practical. It does a great job of explaining how the legal system treats abusers, and what abused women need to be on the alert for, which is exremely useful, as most women end up leaving their abusers and having to deal with him legally. The book does a great job at making it clear that even experts in the field of psychology often don't understand abusers - that only the abused and people who specialize in working with abusers truly know how manipulative abusers are. And Mr. Bancroft does this without being arrogant -he talks about how he even he fell prey to their tactics in the early years of running his program. I think that the reviewers who have canned this book are likely abusive - they saw themselves in this book and are in denial. There are many books about abuse that use examples of abuse that are pretty minimal, borderline, trivial, real gray zones that we could all see ourselves slip into - and this book isn't one of those. The reason that so many reviewers say this book is male-bashing and point out that women abuse too, is because women abuse differently than do men. The kinds of abuse in this book are the kinds of abusive tactics that men employ. IF you want to read about the kinds of abusive tactics that women employ, read Dr. Laura's books.

This book hit the nail on the head...
By Susan C
During my marriage of 20+ years, I devoured uncountable marriage self-help books. Strangely, I couldn't figure out why NONE of these books seemed to cover the issues that I was having with my husband. Then I ordered this book and realized why. I didn't see these patterns as abuse since I had been raised around it and lived with it for so many years, I just thought they were typical problems people experience in marriage. I acknowledge that marriage takes a lot of work but after reading this book, I realized that 98% of it applied to my life experiences directly and hit the nail right on the head, over and over.
If fact, as I was reading this book, I would get mad and slam it down, because the abuse was as plain as day and yet, I couldn't see it. This book spelled it out for me and things couldn't have been any clearer.

During the month that I was reading this book, my husband was really on his toes, being a good boy. I didn't hide the fact that I was reading it. In fact, I would recommend things to him from the book for him to try to improve on areas of our relationship. But even though he was being on his best behavior, I KNEW it was a front and that things would go back the way they were. So 1 year ago this month, I left him and haven't look back since. I never realized a person can be SO happy and fulfilled, even while going through a divorce (I am like all smiles in the courthouse ~ amazing!).
Then I gave him the book and told him to find himself in it, and if he couldn't, then to realize that he's been living in denial all these years and needs professional help. Of course, he hasn't read it AND he won't get professional help. But I am on my way to a healthy and fulfilled life, without being abused any more.

This book made THE MAJOR difference over every book I had ever read. I was in shock at how true almost every single paragraph was to my life. Thank you SO MUCH for making this book! If you are even reading about this book, then deep inside you know in your heart that there is an issue that needs to be solved in your life. I encourage you to buy this book right away and let your eyes be opened. I was crying not because I was unhappy or abused, I was crying at how exactly truthful this book was to my life when NO OTHER BOOK relationship book even came close. I was crying at how could this intelligent, successful woman I am be so blind to what was going on in my life. Please get this book.

From the author of the zany debut, American Idle, comes a hilarious novel about learning how to be yourself-even if it kills you.

Kirby Green didn't get to be a Vice President of Marketing by being nice. But when she fires her entire staff within a few weeks (they all deserved it, really), her new boss is hardly impressed. Wanting to prove his point, he issues a bet: If Kirby can get someone-anyone-to call her nice, she can take that long-awaited dream vacation to Italy with her best friend, Jules. If she can't, she can kiss the Coliseum goodbye. Oh, and her job too.

Now Kirby has exactly thirty days to bully someone into saying she's nice-and to show her boss who's boss. If she doesn't fall hard for him first...

Funny, witty--a must read!
By S. L. Maderos
Can I say how much I loved this book? I LOVED THIS BOOK!! I am a big fan of stories that carry over from one book to the next, and in NGFF we get to hear all about Kirby Green, Jules Verne's best friend whom we first met in "American Idle" (another fabulous book!!).

Kirby is a tough girl. She has to be, considering that she works for a company that sells lingerie and sex toys, with a little whips and chains thrown in for a good measure! No shrinking violet, our Kirby, but it's exactly that devil-may-care," eat-sh**-and-die "attitude that gets her in hot water with her new boss when he calls her on the carpet for firing her entire marketing staff within the first couple of months of attaining the vice presidency position at W&L. It doesn't help that said boss is gorgeous, in a Hugh Jackman sort of way, so when he offers to make her a bet, Kirby is taken off guard and agrees. It doesn't seem too difficult, really. All he wants her to do is find ONE person to call her "nice"--ANY person--within the next four weeks and she can go on her trip to Italy, which she has been planning for months now, without any problem. If not, she has to stay and work on the new product line which is coming out at the end of the month. Of course Kirby balks so he ups the ante--he DOUBLE DOG DARES her. AND he raises the stakes to include her JOB. If Kirby can't find one person to call her "nice" in a month, not only will she lose her vacation, she will lose her job also! The problem is that her boss doesn't seemed to be very concerned about losing the bet, which makes Kirby start to doubt herself. Is she really THAT awful? Plus it doesn't help that her boss is pretty hot and she's having rather unprofessional thoughts about him, which is a strict "no-no" in her own code of ethics. Maybe she should let him fire her if she can get him instead! What's a girl to do?!

Meanwhile, Kirby's secretary, Brianna, is having her own problems. While Kirby is a bitch on wheels, Bree is still on training wheels! She is so nice that she would rather marry her over-bearing fiance than break up with him, because she doesn't want to hurt his feelings! What she really wants to do is be a professional opera singer, but everyone else in her life thinks she is silly and that it is just a passing fancey. However, when Bree's opera instructor manages to get her an audition for a position in the local opera company, Bree must choose what she really wants for herself. When she learns about the bet, Bree jumps to Kirby's defense, much to Kirby's surprise, and offers to help her learn to be "nice" if Kirby will help her learn how to stand up for herself. Together they set out to prove that "nice" doesn't have to mean "weak" and discover that they are a lot more alike than they would have ever guessed.

Alesia has a wonderful way with a story. She knows how to have her characters reach out to the reader, grab them by the hand and drag them head first into the story and keep them there, breathless with laughter, until the very end. I loved Kirby in "American Idle" and I was thrilled to get to read more about her in NGFF. This book had me laughing out loud (much to the consternation of my children and husband!) and I never had a slow moment thoughout. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sassy, well-written story. Alesia rocks!

An interesting and enjoyable read from two points of view
By ChickLitGirl
Are you too nice for your own good? Or... are you a type of person that would never be labeled as "nice" in a million years? Even if you are neither of these, you will most likely enjoy Alesia Holliday's latest novel "Nice Girls Finish First".

This book is told from two points of view. Firstly, there is Kirby, VP of marketing for a sex toy manufacturer. She is a type of woman that has never been mistaken for being nice. As a matter of fact, after recently firing most of her department, her boss Banning Stuart has issued an ultimatum: Kirby either gets someone to declare that she is nice, or she will not be able to go on the Italian vacation she has planned. Not only that, but she will lose her job. Kirby steps up to the challenge, albeit a bit reluctantly. After all, you don't get ahead in life by being nice, right?

Then there is Brianna, Kirby's assistant. She is Kirby's opposite: just too nice for her own good. She is currently engaged to a sweet guy named Lyle, and trying to make it as an Opera singer. Putting up with Kirby's terrible handwriting and tempers isn't easy, but she is determined to do her job well. When Brianna finds about Kirby's challenge, she decides to help her out.

With the quirky characters and sometimes laugh-out-loud madcap moments that Holliday is known for, Nice Girls Finish First is a completely enjoyable read. It's intriguing to be able to see both sides of the coin: a girl who is too nice and a girl who is too mean. There is also a romantic side plot to both girls' stories that I loved.

The plot was a tiny bit far-fetched - after all, an office bet that hinges on a person being called nice doesn't happen much in real life, but Alesia Holliday does a wonderful job of keeping it realistic despite the circumstances. I really couldn't find anything about this novel I didn't enjoy.

Overall, I highly recommend this novel for some good, solid, romantic summer reading. Fans of this author's other book will also enjoy this novel, although it's not quite as zany or hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing what this author comes up with next!

Nice Girls Finish First
By AK
Two women, Kirby Green and her secretary, Brianna, are about to each embark on a journey of self discovery. Brianna desires to be an opera singer, but she's radically underweight for the best roles and her fiance' does not support her dream. His dream is to marry June Cleaver. Between his doubts and her teacher's disapproval, Brianna faces the fact that she must examine what she wants in life, figure out what it is, and go for it, with or without support. Her journey towards her dream will be filled with revelations, though she's not sure what to do with all of them. On the other hand, Kirby is facing the challenge of being nice. Told she can not have her vacation, that she will lose her job unless someone tells her she is nice, Kirby desperately tries to become a person that would be told that. Even before the dare, she'd been on that road, now she has to extend that same quest to her professional life as well as personal. What she learns will startle her.

**** Although alternating first person POV's can be difficult to adjust to, Ms. Holliday handles them deftly. Readers can not help but be drawn into the two women's struggles, and cheer them on. This is a writer who will make you smile whenever you see that she has a new book released. ****

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Bailey O'Neil and Clay Wainwright are sworn enemies. As a district attorney in New York City, Clay sent Bailey, who is dedicated to helping teens get out of gangs, to jail for harboring a criminal. Now Clay is a conservative New York senator, and he has blocked funding for Bailey's organization. When Clay and Bailey find themselves on the same gang-violence task force, they call a truce, then discover that in spite of their differences, there is some chemistry between them. But Bailey's family and friends hate Clay. And Clay's conservative law-enforcement friends despise Bailey's methods, and his mother has someone far more suitable in mind for a daughter-in-law. Once again, Shay shines in this starkly realistic story of gang members and people involved in prevention and intervention programs. She pulls no punches when describing brutal events, and secondary characters, including Clay's environmentalist son, Bailey's overprotective brothers, and Taz, a member of the notorious Good Girls gang, are especially well developed. This powerful story will stay with readers long after they finish the book. Shelley Mosley

Intensely emotional
By D. K. Stokes
Kathryn Shay's books are on my must-buy list for a reason: nobody does intense emotions better.

In Someone to Believe In, Bailey O'Neil and Senator Clay Wainwright have a real conflict. They've been public enemies for over a decade--ever since he sent her to prison for a year. She's known as The Street Angel for her work with kids in gangs. He's also concerned with youth gangs, but believes Bailey's going about it the wrong way, that she should leave things to the authorities, and that she shows a blatant disregard for her own safety.

The conflict doesn't go away just because these two fall in love. On the contrary, it makes their differences more important and painful. They make it in the end, of course--it is a romance, after all--but it's definitely not an easy journey.

The good:

The writing. Nobody does emotionally charged romance better than Kathryn Shay. The emotions of all the characters are right there on the page, and they're understandable.

The topic. Ms. Shay has done her research, making the problem of youth gangs real, and the differing opinions of how to deal with them clear.

The characters. Even the secondary characters--Bailey's son, brothers, co-workers, and Clay's son, and his political rival--are three-dimensional with clear motives and goals.

The bad:

I really had to agree with Clay: Bailey took too many stupid chances with her safety, particularly since she had a young son depending on her. It made me less able to connect with her as a character.

The final conflict went on a bit too long, and made me impatient.

The verdict:

This isn't a sweet, happy love story. It's painful and emotional, and you'll stay up way too late reading it to find out how Clay and Bailey manage to earn their happy-ever-after. But it's worth it.

More soapbox than romance
By J. Mullally
This is a worthy book with a strong hero and heroine but the trouble was there was TOO much politics in it, and bickering. The story could have been condensed into a smaller time frame with a lot fewer pages.

I also found every single Irish cliche in the book really irritating after a while. Bailey is good hearted but foolish, Clay has his issues, they sparkle together but don't really scorch the pages because of all their bickering about the best ways to deal with gang violence, domestic abuse, and so on.

The author has really done her homework, I have to give her that, but it does not make for a sexy read. Also, with all of Bailey's brothers and family entanglements, I felt as though I was coming in at the end of a really loooong series of books, and yet when I looked at the ends for the author's other books, none of them seemed to be linked to this one. So it is good to have secondary supporting characters, but not to the point where it really detracts from the romance between the hero and heroine. It was hard to get involved with either character because their points of view were so extreme.

Finally, the ending was complete tell, not show, and very trite, and left me feeling fairly cheated after having read for sooo many pages.

Couldn't put this book down!
By Amazon Customer
This isn't my first book by Mrs. Shay and definitely won't be my last. Shay gets better with each book released. The story moves along extremely well and the characters seem to come alive right before your eyes.

Senator Clay Wainwright and Street Angel Bailey O'Neil (name given due to her reaching out and helping gangsters get out of their gangs and off the streets of death) are bitter adversaries in the press. Have been for over 10 years. He sent her to prison, and she persecutes him almost on a daily basis now that she's released and he's up for another term as senator.

The story starts out with Bailey's trial 11 years earlier, while Clay is still district attorney. We see the support Bailey has from the citizens of New York, even from the Judge and the Jury. Clay doesn't quite get why many support a woman who harbors young criminals and allows them to hide out from the law.

Only serving a one-year prison term, a much wiser and stronger Bailey is still up to her old tricks, with Clay, now a popular Senator up in Washington, still fighting against her unorthodox ways. Where he is much more conservative and upholds the law religiously, Bailey isn't against helping kids get out of gangs any way she can and still stay within legal grounds because someone close to her suffered because there was no one else to turn to for help.

Now with Congress dishing out over $400 million dollars to social agencies and women shelters, etc, Bailey wants to expand her shelter for gangsters ESCAPE and build a much bigger program GUARDIAN to house, educate, and protect those kids willing to leave their gangs behind. She needs this funding from Congress but there's a one-man roadblock preventing this: Clay Wainwright. He feels she breaks the law and that this money should go to kids who aren't thugs and abused women and schools that need it.

We see that Bailey doesn't break the law, in fact puts her very life on the line to help a young woman escape a dangerous life. Tazmania, the young woman, is a great secondary character who pulls you into her life and makes you understand how hard it is to leave her homies. Taz reminds Bailey so much of her sister who died from being in a gang and the bond that develops between these two are very touching.

Bailey's relationship with her parents and four brothers is also beautifully woven in and will make you want Aiden and Paddy to have their very own book. We also learn that even families with a lot of love make mistakes and can overcome them.

Clay also has problems with those close to him, but not having that same support from his family that Bailey has. He has a young son, Jon, who sides with his rival for his seat in Congress; an on-again-and-off-again relationship with Jane (a snooty, spoiled, rich society dame); an ex-wife who resents him for not having enough time for their marriage; parents forcing a relationship upon him he doesn't want; on top of growing feelings for the Street Angel and a governor wanting him and Bailey to drop their fued and team up on a new anti-crime task force.

What we get is Clay and Bailey fighting each other in the media but heating the sheets (or the stairs, elevators, and the walls) up with love making). Talk about a hot book filled with great dialogue and love scenes.

This book is a must. I cried, laughed, and stayed up very late into the night and morning reading this book. I didn't want it to end.

You'll be greatly moved by Bailey's love of these troubled young teens and her fear of committing to Clay, as well as her love for her brothers and young son Rory; Then there's Clay risking his image as a senator, learning what it means to be a father, and willing to protect Bailey at any cost, including death.

You'll also enjoy the political and personal side to Bailey and Clay's relationship. Watching them go from bitter enemies to protective lovers was awesome. The fact that they both had the same goals, but went at it with different approaches was greatly told by Katheyn Shay.

Also the secondary characters keep things very interesting! They are just as well written as the main characters.

Mrs. Shay thank you for an incredible read. Please hurry with the next book :)

In August 1914, a British aviator patrolling the skies above Mons, in Belgium, spotted the advance of von Kluck's German army toward the British Expeditionary Force. Interviewed for TV five decades later, the pilot recalled the reaction of senior officers when he reported the news . . . they didn't believe him. Pilots soon took cameras with them to give proof of their sightings to skeptical general officers whose vision was limited to the view from the ground.

Before long, both sides were flying reconnaissance missions, and hostile aviators were firing pistols at one another. Then machine guns. And soon after that, aircraft were designed as aerial killers -- the first fighters. They were delicate, unstable constructs of wood and wire, usually underpowered by inefficient engines. But they could fly. And the learning curve was steep back then. One day, someone asked, "If you can hang one engine on an airframe, why not two, or even more? If you can see to shoot, you can see to drop a weapon, can't you?" Thus began the age of the bomber.

It was the Germans at Verdun, in the bitter weather of February 1916, who first made actual the concept we now call airpower -- the systematic application of tactical aircraft to control a battlefield (the definition will change and develop). The objective was to seal off the battlefield from French aviation, denying the enemy the ranging eyes needed to see behind the German trench lines; and as it turned out, the plan didn't work terribly well. Still, others saw what the Germans tried, and recognized that it could be made to work. By the end of the war, aircraft were attacking infantry on the ground. And for the first time soldiers knew what field mice had long understood: The target of an aerial predator feels as much psychological burden as physical danger.

Between the wars, a handful of visionary officers in Britain, Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia, and the United States grappled with the theory of airpower . . . and with its practical applications in the next, inevitable war. The most famous of these, the Italian Guilo Douhet, proposed the first great "philosophy" of airpower: Bomber and attack aircraft can reach far into the enemy's rear to attack the factories that make the weapons and the railroads and roads and bridges that transport them to the fighting front. It was Douhet's view that airpower alone -- without armies or navies -- could bring victory in war. In other words, if you smash enough factories, railroads, roads, and bridges, you'll bring your enemy to the point where he will lie down and wave the white flag.

Douhet was too optimistic. An air force is remarkable not only for what it can do, but for what it cannot. The unchanging truth of warfare is that only infantry can conquer an enemy -- infantry is people, and only people can occupy and hold ground. Tanks can roll across ground. Artillery can punish and neutralize ground. And airpower -- which is at heart longer-range artillery -- can punish and neutralize over long distances. But only people can take up residency there.

Yet airpower can have a powerful effect, and this fact was not lost on the German General Staff. In May 1940, when another German attack violated French soil at a place called Sedan, French soldiers excused their rapid departure from the battlefield by saying, "But mon lieutenant, bombs were falling."

The second global conflict announced the importance of airpower in terms that no one could ignore. Now, huge fleets of aircraft attacked everything they could reach -- and that reach was ever growing, for aviation science advanced rapidly. Engineering talent tends to follow the excitement of discovery and possibility. Engineers who had once devoted their skills to developing steam engines for ships or railroad locomotives found more exciting work. The great breakthroughs in engine power came first, and those drove improvements in airframe design.

By the beginning of the Second World War, Daimler-Benz and Rolls-Royce had both developed water-cooled in-line engines exceeding a thousand horsepower. In America, Allison did the same, and Pratt & Whitney began production of their monster, two-thousand-horsepower R-2800 radial engine in East Hartford, Connecticut. More efficiently cooled, simpler, and capable of absorbing catastrophic battle damage, the Double-Wasp and its close relatives would power a variety of successful tactical aircraft (F-6F Hellcat, F-4U Corsair, TBF/TBM Avenger, P-47 Thunderbolt, etc.), plus numerous types of bombers and transport aircraft.

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, called "the Jug" by its pilots for its brutal and decidedly ungraceful lines, was originally designed by Alexander Cartvelli as a high-altitude interceptor, and it would distinguish itself as an escort fighter for the bomber fleets of the 8th Air Force over Germany. But the Thunderbolt carried a total of eight heavy .50-caliber machine guns, and could also carry bombs and rockets. Its rugged construction and immense armament rapidly led pilots to experiment with other forms of hunting. Soon Jug drivers were flying low on missions they sometimes called Rodeos, for their wild and woolly character: If it moved, it was fair game. Such missions inspired the German Army to coin a new word, Jabo-short for Jagdbomber, literally "hunting bomber," spoken with alarm and respect.

But the P-47 was more than that. Other countries had aircraft with similar missions. The Russian Il-2 was a dedicated low-level attack bird with an evil reputation among those whom it hunted, but it required a fighter escort. The Thunderbolt was something else. It could hold its own in a swarm of enemy and friendly fighters -- now called a "furball" -- and go low to make life miserable for the people on the ground. And that -- though hardly recognized at the time -- was a revolution of sorts. Using a single aircraft for more than one mission was so logical that the Jug's ability to do more than one mission well seems to have been overlooked. Alexander Cartvelli accidentally invented the multi-role aircraft. Today, the name of the game is multi-role aircraft.

So just what can airpower do? It can make life thoroughly miserable for an enemy -- especially if you can hit exactly what you want to hit. Toward this goal, America continues to lead the world. "If you can see it, you can hit it," goes the saying. Following this usually comes, "If you can hit it, you can kill it." That way of thinking shaped American air doctrine. Dive bombing and close air support were first systematized by the United States Marine Corps in Nicaragua during their early interventions there. In the late 1930s, the Army Air Corps (later the Army Air Force) adopted the ultra-secret Norden bombsight to bring systematic accuracy to high-altitude bombing. In World War Two, the AAF experimented successfully with the "Razon" and "Mazon" TV-guided bombs. And the Germans conducted similar experiments, sinking an Italian battleship with their radio command guided Fritz-X bombs.

Such weapons have been improved over the years. Most of us can remember watching "the luckiest guy in Iraq" on CNN. During the Gulf War, his car was perhaps two hundred yards from the impact point of a two-thousand-pound guided bomb on an Iraqi bridge. Bridges are always worth destroying. So are factories, aircraft on the ground, radio and TV towers, and microwave relays. So too, especially, are the places which generate signals and commands . . . because commanders are there, and killing commanders is ever the quickest way of disrupting an army. Or a whole nation. Using precision-guided munitions can be likened to sniping with bombs. All warfare is cruel and ugly, but such munitions are less cruel and ugly than the alternatives.

With the recent advent of precision-guided munitions to attack the command centers of the enemy nation with great selectivity and deadly accuracy, the promise of airpower is finally being realized. But this fulfillment is not always what people wish it to be. You want a "surgical strike," find yourself a good surgeon. Surgical strikes do not happen in war. Yet the phrase continues to be approvingly employed in speeches by those (usually by elected or appointed politicians) who don't know what the hell they are talking about. To state things simply, surgeons use small and very sharp knives, held with delicacy by highly trained hands, to invade and repair a diseased body. Tactical and strategic aircraft drop metal objects filled with high explosives to destroy targets. The technology is much improved over what it once was, but it will never be surgically precise. Yes, the qualitative improvement over the past fifty years is astounding, but no, it isn't magical. All the same, you would be wise not to make yourself the object of the deadly attention of American warplanes.

The newest revolution-also American in origin-is stealth. When researching Red Storm Rising, I traveled to what was then the headquarters of the Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base in the Virginia Tidewater. There, a serious and laconic lieutenant colonel from Texas looked me straight in the eye and announced, "Son, you may safely assume that an invisible aircraft is tactically useful."

"Well, gee, sir," I replied, "I kinda figured that out for myself."

Seemingly a violation of the laws of physics, stealth is really a mere perversion of them. The technology began with a theoretical paper written around 1962 by a Russian radar engineer on the diffraction properties of microwave radiation. About ten years later an engineer at Lockheed read the paper and thought, "We can make an invisible airplane."

Less than ten years after that, such an airplane was flying over a highly instrumented test range and driving radar technicians to despair. Meanwhile men in blue suits slowly discarded their disbelief, saw the future, and pronounced it good. Very good. Several years later over Baghdad on the night of January 17th, 1991, F-117A Black Jets of the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing proved beyond question that stealth really works.

The stealth revolution is simple to express: An aircraft can now go literally anywhere (depending only on its fuel capacity) and deliver bombs with a very high probability of killing the target (about 85 to 90% for a single weapon, about 98% for two), and in the process it will give no more warning than the flash and noise of the detonation. Meaning: The national command authorities (an American euphemism for the president, premier, or dictator) of any country are now vulnerable to direct attack. And for those who believe that the USAF was not trying to kill Saddam Hussein, be advised that maybe his death was not the objective. Maybe we were just trying to turn off the radio (i.e. command-and-control system) he was holding. A narrow legal point, but even the Pentagon has lawyers. However one might wish to put it, we were trying, and Hussein was a lucky man indeed to avoid the skillful attempts to flip off that particular switch. Whoever next offends the United States of America might wish to consider that. Because we'll try harder next time, and all you have to know is where that offending radio transmitter is.

As in Submarine and Armored Cav, I'll be taking you on a guided tour of one of America's premier fighting units and its equipment. In this case, the unit is the 366th Wing based out of Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. As organized today, the 366th is the Air Force's equivalent of the Army's 82nd Airborne or 101st Air Assault Division -- a rapid-deployment force that can be sent to any trouble spot in the world on a moment's notice. The 366th's job is to delay an aggressor until the main force of USAF assets arrive in-theater, ready to go on the offensive. But before we visit these daring men and women in their amazing flying machines, let's take a look at the technologies that enable an aircraft to move, see, and fight.

One of the Better Ones
By A Customer
This is one of the better books in this Tom Clancy series, especially if you are interested in the subject. One interesting observation is that in Tom's interview of Chuck Horner, General Horner doesn't come off as well as he does in "Every Man a Tiger", especially in comparison to the parallel John Warden interview. Colonel Warden is a visionary who wrote a groundbreaking book on air operations and knew enough military history to consider writing a book about the Alexander the Great and his relevance today.

The bestselling true story of a young NYPD detective's life-or-death undercover odyssey that led to the biggest mob takedown in New York City history.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1992, New York City detective Cowan was investigating a truck bombing at a Brooklyn garbage transfer station when the "mobbed-up" thugs responsible for the crime showed up to further intimidate Sal Benedetto, the facility's owner. Thinking fast, Benedetto introduced Cowan as his "Cousin Danny," thereby averting disaster-and allowing Cowen entry into a landmark investigation in which he went undercover as Danny Benedetto to expose the Mafia's billion-dollar monopoly of the city waste removal business. By the time the grand jury indictments were handed down, Cowan had spent years on the case, helped put away dozens of mobsters and incurred lasting emotional trauma from the strain of leading a double life. Recalling it here in vivid, riveting detail, Cowan (aided by journalist Century) reconstructs a time when he was deeper undercover in the garbage "cartel" than any city cop had ever been, with the close calls to prove it. Whether he's boosting a wiseguy's car to plant a bug, navigating confrontations with goons wielding two-by-fours and baseball bats or suffering through a Mafia Christmas party with a malfunctioning radio transmitter burning into his leg, Cowan's exploits play on the page like scenes from a well-mounted mob movie. The Hollywood producer with the rights to his story won't have to spend a penny juicing it up: this is a well-told, gripping tale of a heroic investigation.

The very BEST book of its kind in years
By A Customer
Takedown: The Fall of the Last Mafia Empire is by far the best Mob-related book I've read in years. For once we have the perspective of a true good-guy insider, not a bunch of turncoat felons or distant relationss to Mafiosi who heard some stories second and third hand. Detective Cowan's undercover journey was very suspenseful, and this book is definitely a page-turner. Here's an Irish-American cop who did it all, became a believable Italian -American business executive and got up close, wearing wires for YEARS as he met with made guys and capos in the Gambino and Genovese families. Definitely recommended, even if you are not a "Mob buff."

Kudos to Sal and Danny Bendetto
By M. Swanson
A great book. A nice crisp and fast read that will have you turning the pages in anticipation of what comes next. Detective Rick Cowan infiltrated the New York garbage mafia as a problem fixer for an independent garbage hauler. Five years later his investigation resulted in indictments across the board, which have put an end to mafia involvement in the New York garbage industry and has saved New York customers and businesses millions upon millions of dollars.
The book is more than an entertaining read. It provides you a real life glimpse into how the mafia infiltrates and consolidates and industry. Cowan and Century provide background history in the novel that tell the origins of the garbage empire. I don't know of any other book that gives you such a detailed nuts and bolts picture of day to day mob operations - mafia bosses meeting on a daily bases and hatching out deals and shakedowns over Italian pasteries. It is all done by word of mouth and handshakes. As they give orders to their brutal underlings they literally get fat off of the hog.
I doubt that this is the "Fall of the Last Mafia" empire as the book cover says. I'd like to know what other businesses the mafia have "owned" in New York and how they have adjusted to Cowan's Takedown.
After finishing the book I wondered if it was worth it to Detective Cowan - spending five years of his life immersed in an undercover operation that risked his life and disrupted his family life. I think he hints at an answer with his discussion with his father at the end of the book, but there is still some ambiguity. Like a lot of things in life there is probably no yes or no answer.
Buy this book and read it. Like another reviewer said it gives a much better picture of how the mafia operates than the "exposes" written by Mafia goons and second to third generation accounts that pack the "true crime" sections of the book stores.

Awesome!
By Keith D. Powell
Cowan's book is a riveting account of an undercover NYPD's officer infiltration of one of New York's most powerful Mafia families.
Much like a similiar work "Donnie Brasco", Cowan keeps the reader in perpetual suspense as the detective narrowly escapes detection from the Mob and exposure from his own colleagues.
He also provides a detailed and penetrating view of the Byzantine mechanics and day to day grind of the mob controlled "garbage business"
This book is one of the most successful at describing what life is actually like for low and mid level mafiasio.

Amazon.com Review
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett returns in this third adventure in C.J. Box's tough, tender, and engrossing series, which just keeps getting better. When a forest service supervisor is murdered right after a manic shooting spree that slaughtered a herd of elk, a mysterious stranger who trains falcons and carries an unusual weapon is arrested for the slaying. Then a special investigative team headed by a devious, vindictive woman arrives in Saddlestring, bent on a bloody confrontation with a group of government-hating survivalists camped out on federal land. Among then is Jeannie Keeley, who abandoned her daughter April three years earlier. Since then, April has become like a daughter to Joe and his wife Marybeth, and a sister to their own children. Now April is right in the middle of what promises to be the last stand for the ragged band of refugees from the firestorms of Waco, Ruby Ridge, and the Montana Freemen, and only Nate the falconer, who owes Joe his life for finding the real killer of the supervisor and freeing him from jail, may be able to save her before the Bighorn Mountains are covered in blood. A tense, taut thriller marked by lyrical renderings of the harsh, beautiful landscape, Winterkill's subtext, as in Box's previous novels, is the conflict between individual rights and freedoms and governmental power that continues to smolder in the towns and valleys of the American west. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett runs into trouble again in Box's third fast-paced novel (after Open Season and Savage Run), which focuses on the conflict between parental custody and foster care, as well as the growth of "independent nation" cults. As usual, Pickett, though fallible, is the voice of reason and honesty amid a cacophony of greed and evil. During a horrendous blizzard, he finds the body of Lamar Gardiner, "the District Supervisor for the Twelve Sleep National Forest," pinned by arrows to a tree, near seven illegally shot elk. Sheriff "Bud" Barnum suspects a band of misfits, the Sovereign Citizens, which is camping in the forest, among them Jeannie Keeley, the birth mother of the Picketts' foster daughter, April. Pickett suspects locals killed the combative Gardiner. Soon, the little town of Saddlestring is swarming with press, as well as U.S. Forest Service bureaucrats, including the psychotic Melinda Strickland, and two vicious FBI agents. When Pickett learns of a plan to raid the encampment, he resolves to warn the Sovereigns, especially since Jeannie has April there. Box's description of the harsh yet splendid Wyoming landscape is vivid and memorable, his handling of complex social issues evenhanded and unsentimental. But most of his characters tend to be either two-dimensional villains or saints, and in each book the life of a member of Pickett's family is threatened. Box needs to develop more believable characters to realize his potential as an outstanding new talent.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Box makes it a resounding three for three with this worthy successor to last year's celebrated Savage Run, which followed his acclaimed debut, Open Season (2001). The story begins with another galvanizing set piece--a Box specialty--as Joe Pickett, game warden of Wyoming's Twelve Sleep County, is caught in a mountain blizzard with a dead body beside him in his pick-up truck. The body belongs to a much-hated federal bureaucrat, who may have been killed by a group of survivalists calling themselves the Sovereigns. Pickett isn't sure he buys the connection, but when a couple of bloodthirsty FBI agents arrive in town determined to use the incident as an excuse to attack the Sovereigns, a la Waco, Joe knows he's landed in an all-too-familiar position--caught in the middle between two sets of bad guys, one of whom works for the government. Matters turn personal when Joe's foster daughter is kidnapped by her troubled mother, now living in the Sovereign camp. Box handles this controversial material superbly, showing vividly how government rigidity causes human tragedy in the name of patriotism. Pickett remains an utterly sympathetic, Gary Cooperish hero, but as the series develops, he has begun to darken noticeably. Box's version of Mr. Smith lives in Wyoming, but Washington keeps coming to him, clear-cutting individual human lives with its ever more virulent strain of bureaucracy. Pickett is still our voice for decency in the wilderness, but he's getting steadily angrier. A superb mystery series with an urgent message for troubled times. Bill Ott

Give and take
By Nate Grey
One of the true pleasures that writer enjoys is both the introduction and development of new characters as well as the removal of those you have come to enjoy. Box gets to do both in Winterkill. Without giving away details, Pickett suffers a loss in this story. One you feel right along with him. Box nearly wrote out Joe's wife in his debut novel so it should not be too hard to believe that characters may pass freely from future stories. Some, however, shall be more poignant than others. This loss tears at your heart.

We also have the pleasure of the introduction of a mysterious former Special Forces operative. Wrongly accused of a vicious murder; Joe, reluctantly at first, gets drawn into the case in an effort to exonerate the loner. As has been the norm for these first three novels the search for the truth puts Joe at odds with the local police and his own bureaucracy.

Pickett has no special talent, no special insight into his foes or their crimes. He is an everyman, seemingly no different than any of us reading his adventures. That is the charm, you can easily picture yourself in his place, sharing in his discoveries and disappointments. Luckily there are many more stories yet to come.

for heavens sake Joe, get outta there
By Tom
I really enjoy the Joe Pickett series. Winterkill is a GREAT example of how Joe can just be a regular guy, just trying to do his job and an entire series of events happen to him in a matter of minutes. I am always wondering how the heck he is going to get out of each challenge. At one point I laughed out loud at something that happened only to learn moments later he was even in a worse mess than I thought possible. He is a wonderful character and as others would say, "a good guy!"

Wow! I was on the edge of my seat!
By Rachel S. Jerdin
These books offer a lot of information on what ever issue is being used for a storyline. It is much easier to absorb the information when it is attached to such a good story. So now I get that time passes and the characters age and learn. Since it is a community, people continue in the next story like a year or so later. I don't want to share much and ruin the story for you, but you are going to love it!
