Amazon.com Review
Barry Paris loves Audrey Hepburn, and who can blame him? His exuberant profile of the movie star traces Hepburn's life from her childhood in the Netherlands (where she aided the Dutch resistence) through her Hollywood career (from her Oscar-winning performance in Roman Holiday to Steven Spielberg's Always). Paris, a veteran of Hollywood biography books, wants to free his readers of any false impressions that might sully the late star's reputation. The impression that Hepburn was a snob, he persuades us, was the result of an introverted character formed by her experiences during the war. This wartime experience both fed Hepburn's love of the spotlight and inspired a concern for the poor and powerless that compelled her to campaign for UNICEF from 1988 until her death in 1993. Some of the most fascinating material in this delightfully readable volume concerns the impact the ever-elegant Audrey Hepburn had on women's style and self-conception. If you don't already love her, Paris's book will at the least evoke admiration of her, if not enlist you in a movement for her beatification.

From Publishers Weekly
The life of beloved actress Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) is stylishly explored in this lively, at times even frothy, biography from Paris (Louise Brooks; Garbo). Paris goes a long way toward explaining Hepburn's gamine appeal with his account of her hardscrabble, often terrifying childhood during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. For the rest of her life, he shows, Hepburn had a former refugee's infectious love of the limelight and the good life but also a charmingly modest understanding that most people suffer more than movie stars do. Hepburn's personal and professional relationships with her leading men?William Holden, Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, Cary Grant?are presented in gossipy detail, as is her often difficult marriage with actor Mel Ferrer. There are also informative accounts of the making of her films, with special emphasis on the controversy surrounding the casting of Hepburn rather than Julie Andrews as Eliza in the film version of My Fair Lady. Paris presents some new material from Ferrer, and some very witty new remarks by composer Andre Previn about the struggle over whether to dub Hepburn's singing voice in My Fair Lady, but for the most part this biography is a pastiche of earlier articles, interviews and biographies. Even so, it's the very model of a celebrity biography?a little breathless, a little prurient, with just enough fiber in the way of psychological insight to make reading it a slightly more substantial experience than gobbling chocolates. Photos and filmography not seen by PW. BOMC selection; first serial rights to Vanity Fair.

From Library Journal
Paris, author of acclaimed books on Greta Garbo (Garbo, LJ 1/95) and Louise Brooks (Louise Brooks, Doubleday 1990), now recounts the life of everyone's favorite gamine. Audrey Hepburn had little acting experience or unique talent, but her enormous doe eyes and ladylike demeanor made her irresistible to moviegoers of the 1950s and 1960s. Born into an impoverished aristocratic Dutch family, Hepburn spent much of her early life hiding from the Nazis. Her father abandoned the family when Audrey was six, and she began acting as a means of support, quickly rising through the ranks to major stardom. Ultimately, although Paris offers a vivid and well-documented assessment of both her films and her private life, Hepburn's story isn't on a par with the treatment accorded it. She emerges as a nice, rather ordinary woman who just happened to have the right look at the right time. For public libraries.?Cynthia Ward Cooper, Carrollton Lib., Tex.

A reasonably good book about Audrey Hepburn
By Tanya S.
This is a reasonably good biography. I have found some facts other books
did not have about Audrey Hepburn.

I would not call it an exciting reading, because it has just too many facts, and less insights. But again, this is a typical biography book, which is well written.

Well written and worth the read
By CB
I grew up watching Audrey Hepburn so I was a little afraid to read her biographies. I was worried that they wouldn't do her justice I suppose. This book is a wonderful biography. Not too fawning but not harsh. Audrey shines through. Well worth reading.

Amazon.com Review
Park ranger Anna Pigeon, the fortyish heroine of Barr's popular series, is back, tracking grizzlies through the unforgiving landscape of Glacier National Park as part of a scientific investigation that's outlined with more detail than anyone who's not totally fascinated by these awesome animals will care about. In fact, the description of what actually goes into the lures set to attract the bears so they can be tagged and counted is guaranteed to rumble the strongest stomach--but that's just the back story in this newest Pigeon adventure. When the mutilated body of the stepmother of one of the bear trackers turns up in a remote corner of the park, and it becomes clear that she met death at the hands of a human rather than the claws of a grizzly, Anna goes on the hunt for the killer.

Barr's strength is in depicting the natural surroundings in which her heroine finds inspiration, solace, and comfort, and she limns the gorgeous landscape of Glacier with consummate skill. But her plotting leaves much to be desired, and when she finally reveals the killer's identity, motivation, and especially his accomplice, the discriminating reader may be tempted to throw this book at the nearest teddy bear. The trick ending is too much to stomach, unless you're a grizzly who'll eat (almost) anything. Up to that point, however, there's much to appeal to Barr's fans: another beautifully drawn portrait of a piece of America's vanishing wilderness and a few hours in the company of an appealingly cranky heroine whose appreciation of it knows no bounds. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
The latest entry in this excellent series featuring National Park Service ranger Anna Pigeon is one of Barr's best. Anna has been assigned to work temporarily in Montana's Glacier National Park, where she seems more at home than in her recent forays to East Coast parks, and learns how to do DNA studies on wildlife by working with a biologist, Joan, on a study of grizzly bears. Anna, Joan and a young, inexperienced volunteer, Rory, are sent out into the park's wilderness areas to set lures for the grizzlies. They use a powerful and nasty-smelling concoction, mixed with cow's blood, that the grizzlies find irresistible. Once the bears rub up against the trees or barbed wire that have been coated with the lure, samples of their DNA can be collected from the hair and skin left behind. In their remote campsite one night, Anna and Joan amazingly survive a grizzly bear attack on their tents unscathed, only to find that Rory has gone missing. As park rangers and rescue teams hike the mountainous park looking for the missing teenager, they find instead the dead body of a woman whose face has been horribly mutilated. Rory is an obvious suspect, as is the bear who attacked the camp. Barr focuses on the wilderness park and its endangered population of grizzlies rather than on Anna's personal life and problems, and this makes for a tightly plotted, satisfying read. The author's masterful descriptions of the natural world immeasurably enhance an exciting, suspenseful story that is sure to flirt with bestseller lists. Mystery Guild main selection and Literary Guild alternate selection.

From Library Journal
Having guided readers on behind-the-scenes tours of New York City's Ellis and Liberty Islands (Liberty Falling) and Mississippi's Natchez Trace Parkway (Deep South), Barr returns to the West in her ninth mystery. On a training assignment to study grizzly bears in the Waterton-Glacier National Peace Park, near the Montana-Canada border, park ranger Anna Pigeon hikes into the mountains with researcher Joan Rand and an Earthwatch volunteer, Rory Van Slyke. But Anna's joy at returning to the wilderness quickly turns to terror when their camp is ravaged in the middle of the night by a grizzly. Rory disappears, and in the morning the faceless corpse of a female camper is discovered. Was the woman the victim of the same bear, or was there a more sinister human element involved? While Barr's love of nature and the outdoors shines through, her plot is rather formulaic and dull, lacking the intensity and excitement of her better novels (Blind Descent, A Superior Death). Still, her fans will want to read. [Mystery Guild main selection and Literary Guild alternate selection; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 10/1/00.]DWilda Williams, "Library Journal.

Up to standard for this reliable and enjoyable series
By Cecily Dexter
I am a very big fan of Anna Pigeon, and I found this book to be better than the average for the series. Since I find the series as a whole to be far far better than most, this is great praise from me.
I always dread the mystery story review that gives away too much of the plot, so unfortunately I must speak in generalities. All I will say is that in this story the National Park is Glacier and that grizzly bears are involved. Since you learn this on page 1, this is not much of a plot-spoiler. Like the other books, this one benefits greatly from the author's extraordinary facility in describing the physical and the psychological aspects of the natural world from which Anna derives her strength. I also admire the author's unusual ability to let her character mature and change - Anna seems to be truly living her life in front of our eyes. From the self-pitying, alcoholic but stunningly competent ranger in the first book she has matured into a reflective, sober, observant, irreverant and stunningly competent (even more than usual) ranger in this book. Contrast Kinsey Milhone (I also like that series, by the way), who seems to be the same in every book. Another plus for this book is the characterizations of the supporting players - not many of them, but very well detailed. I very much enjoyed the description of everything to do with bears - seemingly based on solid research, and totally fascinating. Unlike the reviewers who speak of trick endings, I found the plotting of this book to be meticulously fair (and absolutely riveting), to the point where I actually managed to figure out the mystery before it was revealed, and I found it very satisfying. OK, maybe the final resolution (I wish I could describe it but you'd never forgive me) is a little strained, but it truly could not be otherwise.

Nevada Barr books are always excellent. We have been touring the national parks for the last 5 yrs. Amazing to go to places she has written about. Love the history and the twists and turns of the story. Time for her to do one on the smokies.

A Good Old Fashioned Mystery
By N. Sausser
Park ranger Anna Pigeon has been sent to Glacier National Park to be a part of the Bear DNA Project. The adventure begins when the researcher's camp is destroyed in the middle of the night by a bear. Elsewhere in the park a woman is found dead. Anna fires up her little gray cells to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. Following the clues in this mystery is like watching a drama behind a filmy curtain. You think you know what is going on, but you can't be sure until the curtain is finally removed. As always, Barr's talent for describing landscapes brings the reader right into the story's setting. Even if you've never been in a wilderness, you are bound to feel a connection here. A few errors in punctuation and sentence structure, mentioned by another reviewer, are troublesome at times. But these errors are easily forgiven because the story is just so very entertaining.

Their Last Words: A Tribute to Soldiers Who Lost Their Lives in Afghanistan and IraqFamilies and Friends Share Stories, Photos and Last Let

Over 1,000 American soldiers have died in Iraq since combat began in 2003. Their Last Words is a remarkable homage to the lives and deaths of some of the Americans who died in the war on terror. Family and friends share fond, revealing remembrances and photographs of the men and women who answered their nation's call - and made the ultimate sacrifice. But most memorable are the haunting last letters home in which the soldiers themselves tell not only of the hardships and loneliness of war, but of their pride and determination in serving their country, and of their undying devotion to those who'd given their lives its greatest joy and meaning - the loved ones they'd never see again.

George Sheldon, author of the Washington Post bestseller When the Smoke Cleared at Gettysburg, has created a remarkable testament preserving the final words of a generation of Americans who exemplify honor, duty, and love of country - and who have given their lives so that others might live in freedom.

A Tribute of Sorts.
By tvtv3
THEIR LAST WORDS is a collection of stories, letters, and emails constructed together as a tribute to some of the soldiers who have lost their lives fighting in Iraq. The lives of 14 different soldiers are told in this book. The soldiers profiled all lived a variety of lives: some were men, some were women, some were white, some black, some were young, some were about ready to retire, some were in support of the war in Iraq, some were opposed to it. However, each and everyone of them shared a love for their country and fought and served bravely because despite their differences, they knew that what they were fighting for was something bigger than themselves. Each section of the book includes at least one personal email or letter written by each soldier. Some of these were their last pieces of correspondence before being killed. I got choked up a couple times while reading this book and I feel it really captures the essence of what each of these individuals sacrificed to protect. Reading this helped make the war in Iraq more personal for me.

Many errors but a touching book
By Dirtboy's Girl
This book mirrors the one that HBO did on Last Letters Home. I have issues with him bringing Jessica Lynch up during the chapter about the 507th Soldier who was found dead a few days after the attack. He mentions her twice on the page and I feel that took away from the deceased Soldier's story. Also, the author should have had someone with military rank knowledge edit his book. The rank is Private First Class not Private, First Class which he writes all the time. Also there are several inconsistencies in dates which could drive a reader nuts. The last letter home was written 10 years before the Soldier died??? Or was written 6 days after the soldier died??? His editor needs to be fired!

As a jockey, Dick Francis was unbeatable when he got into his stride. The same is true of his crime writing Daily Mirror Dick Francis's fiction has a secret ingredient - his inimitable knack of grabbing the reader's attention on page one and holding it tight until the very end Sunday Telegraph

From the Inside Flap
Rob Finn was a bit of a misfit: a struggling young jockey in a family of accomplished musicians, a man in love with a beautiful woman who wouldn't have him -- he suddenly looked like a rider who had lost his nerve. Could it be, though, that the horses were unusually sluggish, and that there was something more sinister attempting to sabotage him...?
"The best thriller writer going."
ATLANTIC MONTHLY

About the Author
Dick Francis (pictured with his son Felix Francis) was born in South Wales in 1920. He was a young rider of distinction winning awards and trophies at horse shows throughout the United Kingdom. At the outbreak of World War II he joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot, flying fighter and bomber aircraft including the Spitfire and Lancaster.

He became one of the most successful postwar steeplechase jockeys, winning more than 350 races and riding for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. After his retirement from the saddle in 1957, he published an autobiography, The Sport of Queens, before going on to write more than forty acclaimed books, including the New York Times bestsellers Even Money and Silks.

A three-time Edgar Award winner, he also received the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association’s Cartier Diamond Dagger, was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, and was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2000. He died in February 2010, at age eighty-nine, and remains among the greatest thriller writers of all time.

Rob Finn - one of my favorite Francis protagonists!
By H. Bala
Dick Francis has written so many bestselling mysteries, it's mindboggling. He excels in crafting enormously engaging, civilized whodunits, which go down smooth as cognac. Mr. Francis has a habit of introducing elements from the racing world into his novels (for those not in the know, Francis used to be a jockey). Yes, it's true that his heroes all come from the same mold and the stories do contain certain formulaic elements, but I think Francis's magic lies in the humanity and empathic nature with which he cloaks his protagonists. His heroes are all too human, all too flawed, and uniformly unassuming and Britishly reserved. Yet, without exception, they all have unexpected pluck, hidden strength, and the inner fortitude to do the right thing. In four decades, Mr. Francis has written some of my favorite mysteries: Forfeit, Rat Race, Reflex, Hot Money, The Edge, The Danger, Decider, and To the Hilt. And then there's Nerve.

Nerve holds a special place in my heart. I first stumbled across Dick Francis's mystery books years ago when I was a kid thumbing thru a Reader's Digest book. That book contained a condensed version of Nerve, which I went thru in a flash. As soon as I could, I went to the public library and borrowed the full-length version and tore thru that one, too. Since then, I've read everything that Dick Francis has ever written and I've enjoyed every one tremendously (even his anthology Field of Thirteen), but, thru the years, I've come back again and again to Nerve and its charismatic hero Rob Finn. It's just such a darn good story.

Nerve, published in 1964, was, at the time, only Francis's second novel. Yet, even back then, he had what it took to tell a captivating, suspenseful story. The quick plot breakdown of Nerve: Rob Finn has started to make a name for himself as a jockey when he is kidnapped, tortured, and left for dead. Torn up and bleeding, he manages to escape and get help. He then coldly plans his revenge on the bloke what did him wrong. Sounds like a simple plot, but Francis uses his narrative skills to lure the reader into following Rob Finn as he attempts to get back at his disturbed tormentor. It's gripping stuff. Francis's detailed breakdowns of Finn's pain-filled efforts to get back to racing form so soon after he was tortured will make you cringe, as you wholeheartedly pull for the fella. Our hero is very human, vulnerable, and very relatable. Yet, Francis is talented enough as a writer that, by the end of the book, you'll feel some sympathy towards the dastardly villain. And, as an added bonus, Francis throws in one of those unrequited love subplots, as Finn, who has been eternally in love with his beautiful, talented cousin, Joanna, bittersweetly continues to carry his torch. Joanna, alas, does not reciprocate.

I don't know how Dick Francis does it. I'm not into horses or horse racing. Yet, his books never get old for me, and the horse racing elements actually become interesting stuff. I really, really believe Dick Francis's gift, when it gets boiled to its essence, is how well he's able to make the reader relate to his lead character. Every one of 'em is immensely rootable. Before I read Nerve, I mostly read fantasy and sci-fi novels. Nerve introduced me to the world of mystery novels. So, for that reason and also because it's a crackling good tale, Nerve will always be one of my favorites.

Also, glad to hear that Dick Francis has a new book (Under Orders, starring Sid Halley) coming out in a few weeks. I cannot wait.

Yet again, another masterful book by Francis.
By clifford
This is one of Francis' very first books. Written in the early 1960's and set in England, 'Nerve' concerns the exploits of a young and aspiring top steeple-chase jockey. If you haven't read Francis before, you are in for a very nice and enjoyable low-key thriller. Its hard to point to another author and say that Dick Francis is like him or her, because his work is so unlike other writers. Every one of Francis' books has pretty much the same plot outline, but in a strange way, this is not at all bothersome. One reads a Francis book to enjoy the characters and the inordinant amount of plot laden tension that is somehow packed into such a mild mannered little book.

Every time I pick up one of Francis' books I think of the Jean Cocteau movie from the early 50's I think called Orphius. Its based on the old greek myth where some guy goes to hade's (the ancient greek underworld) to rescue his wife who was stolen from him by a god. He gains her freedom on the condition that he not look at her on the way back until they are out of Hade's. Only at the very last step, he does turn around and she is turned into a pillar of salt or something like that... Anyways, in Cocteaus version of the myth, he has the main characters cast as poets, and they drive around the French country side being flocked by admiring fans and lovely young women. The poets there are the rock stars of that fictional society. Well, Francis creates a world very similar to that with his horse racing books, where the entire country of England revolves around the going ons of different aspects of racing.

One interesting aspect of this book, discussed by other readers in this review forum, is that of the human condition known as 'Nerve.' Rob Finn is made to look as though he has lost it over the opening chapters of the book and the mystery revolves around why this was done and exactly who is behind it.

I would highly reccomend this story to anyone... Its a short novel that has with held the test of time though it is entering its fifth decade since publication. It's not the greatest mystery ever written if only because Francis never really took a risk as an author. But this is also one of Francis' very best efforts and will entertain you in a mild mannered way.

The Best of Dick Francis Mysteries
By APRICOT
I bet this is the best of Dick Francis mysteries. But I haven't been able to write a review for a long time. Because I can't describe why this book is so fascinating without destroying the mystery. This is a rather astonishing, extraordinary story, and I'd like you to read it without any preliminary knowledge if possible.
If you are not interested in horse-racing at all, don't worry. I am not interested in horse-racing either, but I can enjoy Francis novels heartily.

An auditor as a hero, accountants everywhere will cheer
By R. Kelly Wagner
Dick Francis has a winning formula: he writes books about a young man of around 30, in a career most people might think is boring, but which turns out to be exciting. His hero is usually taken for granted and under-appreciated by his family, and under-employed, but in the course of the book proves he is far smarter, cleverer, and more observant than anyone supposed. Usually, there's a highly intelligent middle-aged career woman who recognizes his worth and helps him along. It's a formula, but the details that Francis provides makes it work every time.
In this case, our hero is an accountant, an auditor. Many people would start to snore at the thought that auditing could be an exciting job; as a former auditor myself, who has since traded it in for the relative calm of a desk job, I was pleased to see him show how varied and interesting the job can be. Auditors have to know a great deal about a variety of industries, do a lot of travelling, and have highly analytical minds used to investigating small details and discrepancies that most people would not notice. (There might be a bit of bias on my part, of course.) All this means that an auditor winds up making a good investigator of mysteries, as well.
Along with the details of Roland's regular job, and the details of horse-racing that are in every book, we also happen to find out a great deal about yacht-building. Such details are all through Francis's books; he seems to know about every possible job, and must collect details as much as most people collect lint. I always enjoy learning these details!
In this particular book, we have some ambiguous people who turn out not to be bad guys, the person captaining the yacht that Roland first is stored on when kidnapped. Then, the bad guy turns out to be a total surprise, someone we don't suspect at all till the end is revealed. Nonetheless, once the details are pointed out, one goes "Of course!"

Wildly imaginative, and wildly implausible!!
By A Customer
Roland Britten, amateur jockey and professional accountant, wakes up groggily, finds himself bound and tied, aboard what he later finds out to be a ocean going racing yacht in the Med. His last memory was winning, agains the odds, the Cheltenham Gold Cup after which he was kidnapped. This is his first of two abductions, and he has to find out why. Seemingly unimportant anecdotes about accountancy turn out to be critical. The tale sprints along, twisting and turning as it goes. It is a thumping good read, however possibly the least plausible of all DF's books, with some scenes absolutely outside the readers credibility - but this is Dick Francis, do we care???

Accountant to the rescue
By William J. Tennison
Dick Francis brings in a different kind of hero, an accountant!
The story is very enjoyable. This novel differs from some of his others in that the hero actually has a sex life.
While, I would highly recommend this book, Francis does throw out a number of easy clues to figure out the true villian in the story.

Great read. Engaging characters and interesting story.
By Born to Read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and dashed right out to buy the other two in the series. I highly recommend reading them in order. The books are sophisticated cozies, if you must. The characters are introduced well in the first book and the author makes you care about them---dead and alive. It's not too over the top with sex (per another reader) or ghosts. If you like a little supernatural flavor in your mysteries, you will enjoy these. If you just like cozies, I think you will still like this series. If you like Charmed on TV, you'll like this series and be able to visualize what the author is articulating so very well. I hope she keeps writing and writing and writing. A great series.

A Working Single Mom Running a Successful Business, Solving Murders, and Battling Ghoulies
By D. Malone
As if a main character named Emerald O'Brien isn't intriguing enough. Emerald O'Brien is a working single mom who's getting used to raising her two children without much support from their father (her ex-husband). She owns her own tea shop where she also provides warm meals and tarot readings. She also sees dead people, but she's okay with that. Until one night a woman appears to tell her that she'd been murdered by her husband. The next morning, Emerald reads that a local romance novelist died of natural causes. Emerald enlists the help of her children, her best friends, and a new (and of course single man) friend. They battle live murderers, paranormal ghoulies, and a busy Christmas shopping season in an entertaining and sometimes downright scary read. Think twice before reading this one in bed! A fun read. I'm looking forward to more Chintz & China Mysteries!

Disappointing.
By Claire
I'm a big fan of paranormal romances, but this one fell flat. The main character, Emerald O'Brien, a single mother who owns a tea room and can see ghosts, SOUNDS interesting, but isn't. Her character is just too much single-Mom dealing with kids with growing pains, and not enough mystery-solving psychic. The other characters aren't well-developed or fully-formed, and I couldn't develop any real interest -- or belief -- in any of them. The Plot didn't hold my interest either. I think the author tried to do too many things in one story and, as a result, didn't do any of them very well.

From Library Journal
"I have seen the future of the horror genre, and his name is Clive Barker," Stephen King has written. Fortunately, this first novel (Barker has published short story collections) more than bears the weight of King's praise. Barker is a better writer than King, and his characters are just as interesting. Set in modern Britain, the story thrusts a flawed "innocent"parolee Marty Straussinto an epic conflict between wealthy Joseph Whitehead and Mamoulian the Cardplayer, a centuries-old creature with whom Whitehead had struck a bargain to obtain his wealth and power. Whitehead reneges, and the resulting struggle is played out primarily on his fortress-like estate. Barker's excellent writing makes the graphic, grotesque imagery endemic to current horror fiction very effective. Highly recommended anywhere horror fiction is popular. A.J. Slaps the reader with an unclean hand
By Chris W.
One thing is always true about Clive Barker's novels: He will disturb you.
"The Damnation Game" was my first experience with Barker, and is the first I've decided to read again. The surreal horrors conjured within these pages leaves me breathless. This novel delivers all the terror and stomach-turning prose that made Clive famous. The usual glurge from Stephen King about Barker being "the future of horror" adorns the cover, and King is right on the mark. However, be warned that Barker is NOT the future Stephen King; Barker is too unique to be sold as a contemporary author.
This novel features four key characters, and a wide assortment of supporting cast members. We have Mamoulian, also known as the Last European, the central antagonist of this tale. Also enter Joseph Whitehead, the thief, whom we come to know as the wealthy gambler / businessman who acquired his fortune through his MISfortune of dealing with a devil, aka Mamoulian. Martin Strauss, a convict who is living out his parole status on the Whitehead estate, is the newly acquired bodyguard of Whitehead. He is the lead in this tale, and the most likeable character out of a cast of unlikables. Carys, Whitehead's daughter, also lives on the estate, supplied with a never ending stock of heroin to keep her "happy" in Whitehead's home.
Mamoulian and Whitehead are old friends... or at least there is honor among these two thieves. Mamoulian is an ages-old gambler, and with a deal of the cards has ensnared Whitehead's soul. Whitehead has been enormously successful over the years since his deal with Mamoulian, but now it is time to settle old debts. Strauss is there for Whitehead's protection, but Strauss is revealed to be a gambler in his own right...
Barker makes readers squirm. There is a point in horror where most authors would stop, letting the reader's imagination decide how graphic the terror might be. Barker does not stop. His descriptions of grotesqueries and revolting behavior are unmatched, even among the "new school" of gross-out horror writers. Clive is poetic in his dismembering of mind and body. Clive is capable of making the most innocent aside comment seem like it moves mountains of flesh. The hideous deeds of Mamoulian and his unnatural employee Breer leap off the page and slap the reader with an unclean hand. Barker knows fear and loathing better than most.
"The Damnation Game" is very creepy to say the least. Many scenes are calculated for maximum emotional impact upon the reader, even those scenes which don't evoke any horror per se. Most people are brought up to refrain from speaking about certain things (taboos), yet Barker kicks that door aside so brutally and consistently that I can't help but be amazed.
This novel is a bit flawed, but the "flaws" play a significant part in the enjoyable experience of this book. Barker, I am convinced, does not share the same realities as the rest of humanity. Barker seems to effortlessly rip away the fabric of reality (most notably in "The Great and Secret Show"), and can throw the reader into a spiral of the bizarre. In "The Damnation Game", Barker uses his slithering imagination to explain the origins of Mamoulian and his supernatural skill for human suffering, but his explanations miss the mark; we do not get a clear picture of what the ancient Mamoulian really is. Terror of the unknown is a long-accepted practice among horror novelists, but since Barker attempted an explanation, the "terror of the unknown" factor gets thrown out the window. What we are left with is an unsatisfactory origin of Mamoulian, forcing me to reduce my overall rating of this book. Barker's anti-reality tendencies come home to roost; since he seems unable to perceive reality as most do, internal cohesion within his stories sometimes suffers. That is the case here.
Even without the origins of Mamoulian, I am left awestruck at the manner in which Barker verbally terrorized me. Some people have called Clive poetic in his debauchery; I am inclined to agree with them. This book is not for the faint of heart, but rewards your vigilance should you choose to continue your journey into darkness

One of Clive's best....
By A Customer
To say that this book is good would be a terrible understatement to not only Clive Barker, but also to the Horror genre in the world today. The Damnation Game combines all the elements of a great story: Horror (Vile, Stomach-turning details), Passion, Disturbing visions, Fantasy, and most important, Imagination. I've been a Clive Barker fan for a little over a year, reading The Books of Blood, Sacrament, Galilee, The Great and Secret Show, and The Inhuman Condition, and with the exception of The Books of Blood, I think that this is one of his greatest books to date. Barker's imagery and details were so concrete..so real that I would shiver and sometimes have to stop reading for a minute or two so I could try to banish that certain vision or image from my thoughts. But, all along, the story was interesting, and very compelling to read. This book will have you at the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next, and who these people really are...and you won't be disappointed.

Clive Barker explores the idea that there are things worse than death
By Lawrance Bernabo
Like many people I checked out Clive Barker because Stephen King had said "I have seen the future of the horror genre, and its is named Clive Barker." That was a good enough recommendation for me, and I picked up "The Damnation Game," which was Barker's first novel. Part One of the novel, "Terra Incognita," takes place in the ruined city of Warsaw during World War II where a thief dares to challenge Mamoulian the Cardplayer, the dark champion of life's darkest and most game. Apparently the game went well for the nameless thief, for when we jump to the "present" in Part Two, "Asylum," we meet millionaire Joseph Whitehead, one of the richest men in Europe, who is now locked up in the fortress he has built himself. Paroled from prison, Marty Strauss becomes Whitehead's bodyguard. Down on his luck for so long that he thinks things are finally breaking his way, but Marty has no idea what he has signed on for with this job. The final key member of the cast is Carys Whitehead, a heroin addict who cares about nothing but staying high and letting daddy foot the bill.

We understand that Whitehead is going to have to pay the piper for his wealth and power, and he has every reason to be terrified of what is going to happen to him when Mamoulian settles all accounts on behalf of his employer. Of course now we can see some foreshadowing of "Hellraiser" in the idea of playing a deadly game, but it would be a mistake to think we are talking about pro-Cenobites in "The Damnation Game." Besides, Marty has more going for him than simply the luck of being the narrative's hero, and that becomes part of the book's final equation. However, ultimately the plot of "The Damnation Game" is simply the framework for Barker to explore the darkest parts of his imagination and whip up memorable little vignettes to keep you up half the night. Your ability to stomach these scenes is going to be key to how much you appreciate this novel ("enjoy" would most definitely be the wrong word in this instance). Fortunately I read fast enough that I did not have a chance to wallow in the really dark parts, but when things get ugly in this book they get really ugly.

Beyond that there are a couple of distancing factors at work in Barker's writing, both of which are made clear in comparison to the works of Stephen King. First, Barker is a better writer in terms of the elegance of his prose, so there he dresses up his horror in much prettier language. Second, King's genius is that he puts his horrors in the every day world in which we live, while Barker has such a fertile imagination that he ended up writing novels that qualify more as fantasy than as horror. Actually, I can add a third point of contrast in that in that with King it is the idea of the story and with Barker it is more the execution of the tale, so to speak. That is why it is so much easier to describe a King novel (e.g., little girl can start fires and the government wants her as a super weapon, possessed car kills people) than a Barker novel (pick a book, any book). In the end I round up on this one because it made such a big impact on me and because it got me hooked on Barker. Given what follows there are few who would consider "The Damnation Game" to be a first-rate Barker novel, but the first descent into the lower depths of hell tends to stick with you. This one certainly did.

I enjoyed the book
By bc
I enjoyed the book. It had a good plot. I do agree with other reviewers and critics that Mr. Cussler's female characters were poorly developed in this adventure story. I have read most of Mr. Cussler's books and I believe he does much better with male and female character development now.

Done with Cussler
By Amazon Customer
Cussler's Dirk Pitt is right out of "Mad Men" in the silly macho, woman objectifying way he behaves. Is Pitt 15 years old? It's like reading a comic book to read one of Cusslar's books. Very amateurish, shallow writing. I'm done with Cussler.
