About the Author
Dick Francis (pictured with his son Felix Francis) was born in South Wales in 1920. He was a young rider of distinction winning awards and trophies at horse shows throughout the United Kingdom. At the outbreak of World War II he joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot, flying fighter and bomber aircraft including the Spitfire and Lancaster.

He became one of the most successful postwar steeplechase jockeys, winning more than 350 races and riding for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. After his retirement from the saddle in 1957, he published an autobiography, The Sport of Queens, before going on to write more than forty acclaimed books, including the New York Times bestsellers Even Money and Silks.

A three-time Edgar Award winner, he also received the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association’s Cartier Diamond Dagger, was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, and was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2000. He died in February 2010, at age eighty-nine, and remains among the greatest thriller writers of all time.

Murder on the sports page

Sportswriter James (Ty) Tyrone covers the racing scene for a British tabloid. A colleague drunkenly offers to give him 'a piece of advice' but before he can remember what it is falls out of a 7th floor window to his death. A tragic accident...or is it. As Ty begins to investigate he uncovers a far reaching conspiracy throughout the racing world. Before he can bring the criminals to justice Ty has to fight for his and his invalid wife's lives.

As always with a Francis novel the reader is taken into another aspect of the racing world (this time it is sports writing). The hero is stoic, bravely bearing up to his deep personal tragedy, (this time a beloved wife crippled by polio) who must endure many trials before he emerges triumphant in the end.

While Francis' work is formulistic it is also quite good. The mystery is cleverly done, the action exciting. The hero is flawed but sympathetic, his situation touching and when he defeats the bad guys the reader is left with a good feeling.

If you are already a fan of the series this one is another winner. If you are new to the series this is a good place to start.

Intelligent, memorable

I had been thinking: Do I really want to read about horse races? I only watch the Kentucky Derby and sometimes two more races, if there's hope for a Triple Crown.

My friend had been urging me to read Dick Francis, and recently recommended Forfeit, which finally I read.

In the book, Francis is always low-key and, as a former jockey, knows his stuff. Suspense is permanent, the plotting intelligent and flawless.

In Forfeit, we follow journalist James Tyrone, as he and his London newspaper colleagues investigate racetrack fraud. The highly profitable criminal organizations pressure racing writers to mislead England's legitimate bettors. The perpetrators are not hesitant to inflict serious bodily harm and worse.

Francis draws his characters carefully. We know them all, sometimes gaining our affection, identifying with their personal struggles. Tyrone cares for his mostly paralyzed wife Elizabeth, who could not survive without a breathing machine.

A major plot mover is a relationship between Tyrone and an attractive university professor, leading to extended complications and threats.

We also meet a stable owner who is dealing with his spacy wife and troublesome sons. We see the bad guys. We are introduced to the horses, especially a central one named Tiddely Pom.

We are in the British racing world. The writing is memorable.

My first Dick Francis novel, won't be the last

Forfeit, by Dick Francis, tells the story of sports writer James Tyrone beginning when a drunken colleague, Bert Checkov, warns him not to sell his column. Making vague allusions to blackmail and bribery, the man is so drunk that he's all but incoherent and then goes his own way. Chalking it up to the booze, Tyrone leaves his friend only to learn minutes later that the man has just fallen out of a window and died. A short while later, we learn that Checkov has been heavily touting a large number of horses that end up getting scratched from their races shortly before post time. This is the tip of the iceberg that leads Tyrone into conflict with bookmakers who will stop at nothing to continue a scheme that has already netted them a small fortune.

Tyrone is a remarkably strong character who deals with a home life that could only be called difficult, an editor who doesn't mind risking his life to get a story, and a gang of thugs that don't mind dishing out a beating or even murder to get what they want. He is not perfect, but he does have a good heart and readers can't help but root for him. Most of the characters are interesting and portrayed uniquely enough that they remain distinct and not just cardboard cutouts put in place to fill their assigned roles. The story builds momentum as it goes. In the beginning, I found it mildly interesting but as it progressed it became a real page-turner.

This is the first novel by Dick Francis that I have read but he has been one of the most respected mystery writers for many decades. His writing style is very clear and crisp, easy to read and understand. Some English novelists use language that can make it hard for Americans to follow but I didn't find that to be the case here. I am not particularly interested in horses or horse racing but I do like good stories with interesting characters and there was a healthy dose of that in Forfeit. After reading this book, I'll be ordering more Dick Francis novels soon.

Excellent!

This was a great book about women, pregnancy, raising children, yoga, and friendship. There are even some secrets that are revealed as the story unfolds. This book is such a nice change from the everyday chick lit. Each chapter begins with a very insightful yoga quote that inspires. The quotes are also tied into what will happen in the upcoming chapter. Enjoy!

I am one of those people who does initially decide on whether I will pick up a book based, in part, by its cover. About 2 years ago, I looked at this book and put it down - I decided NOT to read it because the cover looked awful and too mystical for me - I thought the book was going to be too weird for my taste.

Well, last week, it was on sale at our chain store for $4.99 and I decided to give it another try.

Well, I LOVED it. I guess there is a lesson here about judging a book by its cover -

The Yoga Mamas is about Susan, Gigi, Laura, Margaret and Isla. They are all pregnant and they all meet at a weekly yoga class. All but Laura are rich, but in a nice change of pace, while this book does talk about wealth quite a lot, the characters are not snobby about it and Laura feels instant kinship with them.

As their pregnancies progress so does their friendship. They get into all kinds of whacky situations and as the story develops you get to learn more about each woman's personality as well as their lives and their respective yoga husbands.

There is a little bit of everything in this book - affairs, love and romance, fighting, money being spent and, of course, births - many births. What I also like about this book is that although there are quite a few personalities, this story is mainly told from the point of view of only one of the woman - Laura's.

There is even a neat little twist at the end - making these women not only funny, but amateur sleuths at the same time.

The friendships are real, there are not catty friends here and each woman is smart and special in their own right.

Great, great chick lit - despite its horrid cover.

Clever and Insightful

I picked up The Yoga Mamas because the theme seemed relevant and it looked like fun summer reading - but I soon found that there is alot more to this book beneath the surface. The story is laced with so many insights about New York life, social class, playground politics, husband-wife dynamics, and more. The writing is crisp, funny and smart, and the characters are cleverly crafted.

I was immediately drawn into the dilemmas of these extraordinary Yoga Mamas - Susan, the socialite with the mysteriously absent husband; Gigi, the social climber from Queens; Isla, the Spanish supermodel constantly at war with her Italian boyfriend; Margaret, the single high-powered lawyer; and Laura, the narrator-freelancer who is surprised to find that she has something in common with these privileged women. The story traces the social pressures, the well-kept secrets and the bizarre everyday encounters that could only happen in Manhattan - but are somehow instantly recognizable.

Author Katherine Stewart clearly has affection for her characters and a humorous way of making them seem both wacky and lovable. I have to admit that more than once I painfully recognized myself (or my friends) in how they dealt with the demands of new motherhood. Especially poignant was Laura's extreme frustration with her absent-minded husband - the book describes in comic relief how he decides to take up learning Latin, just when the dishes and diapers are piling up.

The book is very hard to put down - I read it in two days. But its exploration of new motherhood, female competition and unexpected friendship stuck with me long after I'd closed the back cover.

Op-Center Fans AVOID THIS BOOK!

I am a fan of the Op-Center books and have read all but two of them. I love the action and suspense and the characters are great. This book had potential, but was ruined when Paul Hood was removed from Op-Center. He has been the central character throughout the series and to remove him is absolutely absurd. It would have been different if he retired or quit on his own, but he was fired and a general took his place. Throughout the book I hoped that Hood would regain his job, or that the tyrant general would get fired. At the end I was thoroughly dissapointed to find that Bob Herbert, another main character, was fired. I felt as though the enemy had won for the first time in this series. I have never written an online review before, but I felt that it was necessary in this case so that Op-Center fans could avoid this horrible book.

It bombed

If you are a fan of the Op-Center series you will be very dissapointed. It is a slow moving story line and our favorite characters of the past are now written with little or no personality. Story lines must advance but the series is being killed.

plot?

The whole story has a patchwork feel, the characters are flat and the storyline reaches too much. even as a sequel, some better character development and back story would have helped. Very disappointing

Ex-jockey turned PI Sid Halley bravely faces demons & ghosts

Francis addicts will cheer on "friend" Sid Halley as he faces old ghosts (first wife), old demons (as in WHIP HAND), and new demons (his friend & that of a little girl's fatal disease). The best part of any Dick Francis book are his characters. You always LIKE them. The action keeps you turning the pages, but the characters have you on their side cheering for them. COME TO GRIEF is no different. There are mixed feelings at the end of every Dick Francis book: good, the character is OK; and nuts, now the character is gone away because the book is finished. It has been nice to welcome back Sid Halley for the third time.

A Sophisticated Thriller

Dick Francis wrote only three books about Sid Halley, a former jockey turned investigator, and in each book, Sid and his views about his crippling injury change just a little.

In COME TO GRIEF, Francis tells us right up front who the villain is, a "least likely" suspect indeed. Ellis Quint is a former champion amateur jockey, a friend and rival to Sid in his halcyon days, and a man who has gone on to outstanding success as a TV commentator and talk show host. So why would such a man stoop to crippling ponies and racehorses by chopping off their feet?

It's a mesmerizing picture: Sid reluctantly investigating and Ellis going to the brink, both men sharing a nature that loves and craves risk. Francis points this up in the character of Jonathan, a bored almost-delinquent, who got into trouble with his friends for stealing a car. Jonathan at this point could go either way: full fledged criminal or hot-shot investigator.

As in all Dick Francis, there's such forward momentum to the plot that the book is hard to put down. Even though we know "who done it" it's not apparent that the criminal will ever be found guilty. I peg this as one of Francis's best.

Not what they seem

Sid Halley, former champion jockey, looks small, harmless and naive. He's so inconspicuous that you may not even notice he has a prosthetic hand.

But in fact, Sid is a brilliant private investigator skilled at espionage, lock picking, computer hacking and judo - a man of action who never shows fear.

His good friend Ellis Quint, another ex-jockey, has retired from racing to become a TV chat show celebrity. He's utterly charming and inspires happiness everywhere he goes. Everybody loves him.

But in fact Ellis is secretly indulging in sick acts of cruelty to animals. No one would believe it of him. Sid Halley is nearly destroyed trying to expose the truth.

Dick Francis heroes almost always get badly battered in a fight or two. But Sid Halley's tribulations go far beyond that. Though totally without self-pity, he`s never gotten reconciled to the loss of his hand. In this book, Sid must also bear the burden of betraying a friend.

I find the Sid Halley books challenging because life is so very hard on the handicapped investigator. I don't want my heroes to suffer this much! But Dick Francis felt he had reached a higher level with these books. They delve into the nightmares that won't go away - without, however, losing the essential optimism that epitomizes Dick Francis.

Lily Bard owns a tiny house, next door to a small apartment building, in the tiny town of Shakespeare. She cleans houses, offices, and apartments for a living, has made no friends in her four years in Shakespeare, and spends her leisure time in fitness and karate classes run by Marshall Sedaka. Late one night, on a lonely walk, Lily sees a hooded figure pushing her loaded garbage wagon to a park across the street. Its burden turns out to be the body of Pardon Albee, nosy landlord of the apartment house. Lily anonymously calls Police Chief Claude Friedrich to report it, but her fiercely hidden past, now known to Friedrich, raises his suspicions. And so Lily feels driven to look for Albee's killer among his tenants and the townspeople--Marshall's estranged wife Thea; tenants Deedra Dean and Tom O'Hagan; and nasty drunk Norvel Whitbread, the church janitor, are only some of Shakespeare's citizens with things to hide. It takes Lily a while to come up with the right answers, even as her massive psychological sores begin to heal. The gripping tension of the opening chapters evaporates quickly; there's also an overload of sex sessions and karate lore. The Shakespeare series are among the best genre novels I have ever read. Truly a class above.

I have one piece of advice to anybody interested in Shakespeare's Landlord: buy it, borrow it, whatever, just read it as soon as possible. Put it at the top of your pile. You'll be glad you did.

Lily Bard is one of the most compelling and, frankly, admirable heroines I have ever come across. She's got a very dark past, and from the very first page it's clear how much sheer will it has taken for her to make a new life for herself. Lily is independent, blunt, ass-kicking, solitary, and smart as hell.

The Shakespeare books are mysteries, and they're good ones, but the reason to read them is to watch Lily Bard's character grow and change. Charlaine Harris has a tremendous ability to infuse the most quotidien events with incredible depth, a true master of the 'show don't tell' school of writing. Her characters are both ordinary and monumental, and she writes about the South in a way that (really!) bears comparison to Faulkner and Toni Morrison.

The Shakespeare series in particular picks up on a lot of very delicate issues and tackles them head on: questions of race, class, and gender end up tangled in the crimes Lily has to solve. For women, in particular, thinking about how Lily has changed in response to her own past can be a real eye-opener.

O, my offense is rank, it smells to heaven...-Shakespeare, Hamlet

For four years Lily Bard has lived and worked in the small town of Shakespeare, Arkansas. While she cleans the houses and businesses of the town folk she learns some of their secrets, but she's known and respected for being closed mouthed. Even though Lily is a known and recognized member of the community, she isn't really close to anyone; she keeps to herself. Lily has a past she'd like to keep there.

When the leading Shakespeare busybody and landlord turns up murdered, suddenly the people that she has worked for are all under suspicion. When the local police chief starts sniffing around Lily's door, she decides she needs to try to locate the murderer.

With only 214 pages, I was a little skeptical about how this mystery would get pulled off. I ended up being pleasantly impressed. Charlaine Harris creates a detailed setting and introduces a town full of colorful people. Having grown up in a small town; it was easy to recognize some of the characters and relate to the life and town she describes so well.

The mystery is solid and the set up compelling. The story is detail rich and there are multiple layers and twists and turns that keep the reader enthralled. Ms. Harris has created yet another wonderful heroine in Lily, whose past is ugly and the emotions that the telling of it evokes are genuine, frightening and a little heart breaking. Enjoy!

A dark cozy, if that's a genre

I've read other series of Charlaine Harris' work and found them enjoyable. This one is very good too. The town of Shakespeare where Lily Bard (main character) lives is quaint and provides enough quirky characters to keep the plot going for at least the four books I've read. I plan on ordering the 5th that completes the series. This series was started in 1996, so some of the references (like her "first" cell phone) might seem dated, but I prefer to think of them as "historical."

Don't Miss This One

A short cut home on an abandoned road led to a big surprise for a Forest Service employee when he found a wrecked car in the road with three dead women inside. Doc Osborne got a call from Chief Law Farris to help her out by finding Ray Pratt, his neighbor local fishing guide, and get to the scene of the accident. Lew needed Doc to help identify the victims and have Ray begin taking pictures of the scene.

Much to Doc's surprise when he arrived at the scene he recognized Peg Gamin, a local resident, with a rather shady reputation as one of the victims. He also realized the deaths were from gun shot wounds and not caused by the wreck. Peg had been Ray's friend for years and he was shattered at the news and determined to find the killer.

It is soon discovered that Peg not only was an heiress but also had a son. The three women were connected with their once a week Karaoke outings as well as the fact that they had all been patients of a plastic surgeon. Peg was in the process of filing suit against the surgeon malpractice.

This is the seventh in the Loon Lake series and Victoria Houston brings back many of the characters from previous books as well as a couple of new ones. Even if you don't like to fish you might wish you did after reading a Loon Lake mystery.

Northwoods life-dear to my heart

The mystery created by Victoria Houston, in this instance in "Dead Boogie", is set in some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Contrast that with the "looney" characters in the story and we get a taste of life in the woods of the Upper Great Lakes. I live in the north woods and my friends and I feel we have met everyone of these characters. Victoria is the only author able to capture the essence of this area in her books, and with a good mystery to boot. I am afraid that I am another woman who is attracted to Ray Pratt and was glad to see the many sides of him in "Dead Boogie".

I took the bait

If you've read any of Victoria Houston's previous mysteries in the Loon Lake series, you know what to expect, but if you're a first-time reader of Ms. Houston's novels, you are going to be pleased. I heard Ms. Houston on an NPR show and liked her immediately--her Midwestern sensibility, her sense of humor, the way she talked about writing. So I purchased this book, and I found it a terrific, engaging, and completely enjoyable reading experience.

The characters are likeable, slightly quirky, and believable. The story features a triple murder, and couple of other grisly deaths along the way, but the author loves her main characters so much, and writes so wonderfully about the locale, that the reader is almost more interested in the interactions of the cast of mostly amateur crime fighters who move from clue to clue to solve the crime. The book is well-paced and contains humor and local color--and some nicely written descriptions of fishing experiences--and the mystery unravels page by page.

Ms. Houston is a skillful writer. This book is a keeper. And I recommend it to anyone who likes the Midwest, the outdoors, character-driven fiction, and a good story.
