Devastating and Haunting!
By BookLover
Cannot get this story out of my head. The author is new to me and I'll most definitely read his other book and keep an eye out for new work.
He had a way of bringing this young woman to life through his writing style, almost as if he sensed how she was feeling (joy through her son and her rare friendships/at same time the dread and despair as a constant backdrop. This book read like a unique hybrid of true crime and a memoir (although I get a memoir is telling of one's own story) just using that for lack of a better word. Seemed more personal than a True Crime Biography.
This angel could have been ANYTHING with her intelligence and beauty had she not been absolutely destroyed by this monster.
Although the ending is no secret, I kept hoping there would be some miraculous last minute twist where she and her boy would be living happily ever after.
The author did a great job researching and giving her a voice, in my opinion. He appropriately gave detailed facts without exploiting the hell she was in during her life.

Chilling story. So many twist and turns it's hard to believe it's a true story. This book grabbed my interest from the start. I literally could not put it down

A beacon in the fight to end child abuse
By S. E. Rowland
I applaud Matt Birkbeck for writing A Beautiful Child. Coincidentally,I began working with neglected and abused children during the writing of this book. The writing is simple and straightforward but the actual plot is quite complex.

A Beautiful Child is a true story that leaves the reader wanting to do something about abuse or help in finding missing persons. It's the kind of book you put down after reading and find yourself staring out the window for a long time. You wonder why nobody ever said anything before it was too late. Sharon Marshall could be anyone's neighbor or high school buddy; she was the girl next door, a shining example of hope for a better world. Earning top grades, listed in Who's Who Among American High Schools, Sharon read Shakespeare for enjoyment and participated in ROTC. She was headed for Georgia Tech on a scholarship, with the goal of someday working for NASA. The sweet, blonde girl with the cheery disposition would never see that dream. Neither would her little son, Michael. There's more, much more.

This is a tale of baffling sadness and gross cruelty that spans generations. Warren Marshall, aka Franklin Floyd kidnapped a child, raised her as his daughter, then as his wife and mother of his child. His activities left hardened detectives appalled and searching for the answers to a mystery that remains yet unsolved.

Amazon.com Review
Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code caused a huge sensation when it came out in 2003. The book, a modern twist on the Holy Grail quest, has sold over 20 million copies in 42 languages. It claimed to reveal an extraordinary alternate history of the Western world, including the existence of Jesus Christ's surviving bloodline, which was protected for 2,000 years by a secret society called the Priory of Sion. The question is: How much of the novel is true? Not a lot, according to Sharan Newman, a medieval novelist and scholar. Her book, The Real History Behind the Da Vinci Code, investigates the historical figures, places, and events behind Brown's thriller. While The Da Vinci Code is a great yarn, she writes, it makes numerous factual distortions and was largely inspired by another book, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, that is far from credible.

The real Priory of Sion, Newman writes, was founded in the 1950s by a French far-right extremist named Pierre Plantard, who tried to pass himself off as a descendant of Dagobert II and, therefore, as the rightful king of France. Newman writes that French historians have discredited Plantard's claims as a hoax. In The Da Vinci Code, the Priory is said to have been led by an illustrious line of grand masters, including Leonardo Da Vinci. Newman writes that Leonardo, while certainly a genius, was famously erratic, undependable, and easily distracted--far too flaky, she suggests, to be chosen to lead any group, let alone one supposedly as secret and important as the Priory. Newman says The Da Vinci Code also makes basic mistakes about Parisian geography, the layout of the Louvre museum, and important facts of French and biblical history. So did Jesus have children? Newman says there is no evidence for that either. Overall, her book is a salient reminder that fiction is sometimes just that. --Alex Roslin

About the Author
Sharan Newman is a longtime member of the Medieval Academy, has served on the advisory board for the Medieval Association of the Pacific, and is a Ph.D. candidate at UC Santa Barbara. Newman's medieval French mysteries have garnered Macavity, Agatha, and Anthony Award nominations, and she has won the Herodotus Award for Best Historical History.

Comprehensive and concise guide, a good starting point
By T. Tan
I like "The Real History Behind the Da Vinci Code" for two reasons. One, the author Sharan Newman does not appear to have a personal agenda spurred by either religious-based outrage or insecurities, as is the case with most other authors in their `Debunking the Da Vinci Code' tirades. Two, it is one of the more comprehensive books that address most of the issues of controversy in Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code". In scope, it goes beyond the usual Jesus-Mary (Magdelene)-bloodline-Da Vinci that has become a cliché with those other authors. For Christian lobbyists, lobbyist groups and believers that were suckered into their band wagons, that's all "The Da Vinci Code" is about. But it is more than that.

Newman has the right attitude towards "The Da Vinci Code". It is fiction, and she treats it as such. She does not go out of the way, as those other authors have done (because they have treated it as a factual work), to attack the book and its author. True, Dan Brown encouraged the controversy by purporting "The Da Vinci Code" as fact, but she keeps the focus on the subjects in the book and not on the author. In short, she does not get personal but academic. For each subject, she references the details in "The Da Vinci Code" where it appears, after which she presents the actual background and brief history (before Dan Brown re-shaped it for "The Da Vinci Code") in its true context.

The book is a good read. She gives every subject its own stand-alone chapter (Priory of Scion, Templars, Mary Magdelene, Da Vinci, Opus Dei, etc.). Each is a set of basic information but as brief as you would expect in an overview. I will not debate the author's authority on the topics she addressed. (FYI, the author's background is in medieval literature and history.) True, she does not go in-depth enough, and maybe she is not thorough enough in her efforts. But she compensates with a bibliography list at the end of every chapter, citing more than several sources so that you the reader can look up for more information.

But don't rely only on "The Real History Behind the Da Vinci Code" book to address everything that's in "The Da Vinci Code". There are others out there that are like Newman's but offer a different perspective. But I recommend staying away from books that limit its scope only to Jesus, Mary Magdelene, bloodline and Da Vinci. Those reveal more about their authors' inner state: uptightness, personal outrage and impaired mindset blinded by personal convictions. Newman's book is better than that. A definite good starting point.

A Superb DVC Companion, For Fans and Foes Alike
By Mark Shannon
I read "The Da Vinci Code" eagerly, just after its release. I was disappointed, however, when the book turned out to be little more than astute repackaging of the intriguing but generally bogus material from "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." My disappointment turned to dismay when I realized how many people--including critics I assume are paid to know better--were accepting Brown's claims to historical accuracy and legitimate research. Newman is not trying to comment on Brown's work so much as she is carefully, and one might even say lovingly, presenting a more accurate picture of the fascinating historical issues Brown touches on. She rightly points out that presenting pseudo-history as fact is nothing new. Geoffrey of Monmouth, for example, claimed his proto-Arthurian material was historical truth. So, with a keen sense of humor and a real talent for distillation, Newman gives us a collection of readable and reliable factoids. At the end of each short section she also includes excellent recommendations for further reading.

Newman's book is a superb companion piece that should serve as both a relief to secular critics of "The Da Vinci Code" and as a source of additional, engaging information for Brown's legions of fans.

Well organized and entertaining historical study
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
For the organization by topic alone, this book is a very good study for anyone who has been interested in the Da Vinci code history. The author of _Real History_ organizes the work into sections on various details of history to which the Da Vinci Code refers. Each topic is covered in sufficient detail to give the reader a sense of what is known and what is not known about the past. Bringing it all out into the light helps the reader make a more educated approach to the topics and allows them to make their own decisions about what to believe. Mrs. Newman is an accomplished author of historical fiction as well and her talent for making history entertaining is not lost here. A very good ready reference or as an historical primer, this book will find use in your library.

Loch Ness Madess
By sautry
This book ia a far fetched story of 3 scientists who investigate the Loch Ness Monster and end up discovering a hole in tme. The book advertises about a threat the military has never seen before. Well the only thing never seen is the military!! No where to be found in this book. Well unlesss you count the United Nations. Don't waste your time with this book. If you want an entertaining story dealing wih worm holes/holes in time, read Star Trek.

Moderately entertaining but bad ending
By A Customer
Started off pretty good with a lot of suspense and kept me wanting to read it, but during the last quarter it just dies. The ending is one of the worst I've ever read, but the fact that during the last quarter of the book you can TELL it's going to be a bad ending just ruins it.
Seems like the author just got tired of writing and cut it short by a hundred pages or so as there's never any military or saving of the world like the books description says.
The first 3 quarters of the book were good, and it had an interesting concept but I have to give it a 2 because of the sudden ending that left me feeling disapointed.

Phew. This book stinks.
By A Customer
This book was simply terrible. Like others have said, it starts out promisingly, but ends with almost no plot or character resolution whatsoever. Do the young scientist and the editor fall in love? Is the world taken over by hordes of Loch Ness monsters from the past? You'll never know (and, frankly, you really won't care).

Shakespeare, Arkansas, is home to endless back roads, historic buildings, colorful residents--and the occasional murder. It is also home to Lily Bard, the local karate expert/cleaning woman with a particular knack for finding skeletons in closets.

But when the local woman of ill repute is found murdered, being familiar with her dirty laundry could make Lily the next Shakespearean to die.

From Publishers Weekly
"There's nothing more revealing about people than the mess they leave for someone else," says Lily Bard, who has the perfect job for an amateur sleuth—she's a cleaning lady in the small, close-knit town of Shakespeare, Ark. A detached and wary observer of others, Lily reluctantly finds herself investigating the murder of one of her employers, Deedra Dean, in her latest engaging outing (after 1998's Shakespeare's Christmas). It's Lily's misfortune to discover Deedra's violated body in her car on a deserted road, the apparent victim of a tryst gone sour. For Lily, who already knows more than she wants about the promiscuous young woman's habits, the details don't add up. Since many of her other clients are related to Deedra, Lily endures their catty, sometimes malicious gossip, but when she helps Deedra's mother clean out the dead woman's apartment, she quietly disposes of Deedra's collection of compromising photos and videos. The nature of the crime forces Lily to deal with her own scars, legacies of the brutal abduction and rape in Memphis that sent her scrambling for the tranquil environs of Shakespeare. A wise, self-counseled soul, as well as a skilled karate student and fitness buff, Lily is just foolhardy enough to charge into a burning house to save a frail, mean old man. Indeed, Lily has such an engaging voice, full of pain and redemption, that the collecting of clues and the unfolding of the crime take a back seat to her personal story. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Lily Bard studies the minutiae of the people whose houses she cleans in Shakespeare, Arkansas. A horrific episode in her own past keeps her wary and private, so she is even more than normally chastened by finding the body of Deedra Dean, naked and violated, in a car in the woods. Deedra was free with herself, and nearly every male in Shakespeare had taken from her, but it's too easy to focus on her taste for male companionship in seeking her murderer, especially when rumors of videotapes and sex toys surface. Lily, meanwhile, is trying to resolve not only Deedra's death but also its resonance in her own psyche and her need, barely acknowledged but deep as water, for Jack, the man in her life. Lily is a terrific character with dark shadings and stark fears, but learning strength and cleaving to it. A supporting cast of quirky characters fully rendered in quick strokes will hold readers as surely as the complex resolution in this cozy on the bleeding edge of noir. GraceAnne A. DeCandido

Welcome Back to Shakespeare...
By Silmarwen
For someone who doesn't like to get involved in other people's affairs, Lily Bard seems to have a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In book #4 of Charlaine Harris' superb Lily Bard mystery series, Lily discovers lifelong Shakespeare resident Deedra Dean murdered inside a car parked in a woodsy area outside of town. Lily quickly becomes a suspect when it is discovered that Deedra died of a severe blow to the chest - a blow that could only have been delivered by a martial arts expert. The sheriff becomes even more suspicious regarding her involvement when Deedra's mother asks Lily to help her clean Deedra's apartment, but Lily is determined not to get involved this time and fully intends to leave the case in Sheriff Marta Schuster's capable hands. However, Deedra's notoriously promiscuous lifestyle provides an extensive list of suspects, but very few clues. Much as Lily disliked Deedra in life, she feels that she has no choice but to resume the role of amateur detective and join the investigation.
Once again, a fabulous book from the superb author, Charlaine Harris. With every book Lily Bard and the other characters who reside in Shakespeare become more fleshed out and more entertaining. Lily is really starting to develop into a real person again after being violently assaulted years before and it is fun to see her change. I thought that the mystery plot this time was wonderful and had a nice little surprise twist at the end. For anyone who enjoys mysteries, I cannot recommend this series enough!

I love a quick read
By Cremekat
I began to read this series because I really enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire series and so I thought this would be another good series to read. It is. These Books are quick to read and if you are a fan of the stackhouse books you will meet Lily Bard as a character in "Dead as a Doornail". It's just a small part but it's nice to be reminded of her character.
Lily Bard is as different from Sookie as you could find, but there are similarities to there basic characters.
I took all five of the books in this series as something light to read on the plane to and from California and for the week I was there. It was a great series to read and I left them for my daughter in law to read as she picked up the first book when I had finished it. Both her and my son enjoyed the books. They are great to read in airports, Dr. appointments, and times when you need that little something to keep you entertained while you are hurry up and waiting.

Beautiful - Lilly Bard at her best
By Joanie Fales
Beautiful - Lilly Bard at her best! Good for Lily and Jack, Poor Jack, he will keep seeing Lily do dangerous things, because she couldn't live with herself if she did't. And the villinous pseudo niece-heiress is beautifully drawn!

From Booklist
Due to his history of expensive romantic entanglements, Alistair Carsington now has six months to find either a useful occupation or a wealthy heiress to wed. To prove he is not an idle fop only concerned with sartorial pleasures, Alistair agrees to help his old friend, Lord Gordmor, by traveling to the wilds of Derbyshire to convince Gordmor's neighbors to support the nobleman's proposal to build a canal. Upon arriving, Alistair, a famous war hero and eligible bachelor, finds everyone couldn't be nicer, everyone except for respectable, practical, spinsterish Mirabel Oldridge. The last thing Mirabel wants is for her tranquil little corner of England to be destroyed by a noisy, nasty canal, and she is prepared to use every weapon at her disposal--including her disheveled coiffure and unstylish wardrobe--to stop Alistair. RITA Award-winning Chase presents a splendidly written tale of two people trying desperately not to fall in love. Chase's beguiling blend of deliciously complex characters, potent sexual chemistry, and sparkling wit give this superb romance a richness and depth readers will treasure. John Charles

Oh, frabjous day!
By 3-5 book a week habit
At last!!! I've been reduced to re-reading my complete collection of Loretta Chase's witty, passionate and beautifully written books for years ... there's literally no one quite like her!

She has Mary Jo Putney's passion and willingness to look unflinchingly at tough emotional issues; she has the vivid and endearing characters of Georgette Heyer; the sheer sexiness and emotional impact of Mary Balogh and Gaelen Foley ... but no one, NO ONE can match her sly, sharp and absolutely irresistible sense of humor.

If you're in the market for an intelligent, sexy and emotionally fulfilling historical, I have GREAT news for you! All of her books are being re-issued, including my absolute favorite, Sandalwood Princess, over the next year. If you've just discovered Loretta Chase, prepare yourself for an absolute feast of insights, giggles, snickers, sighs and smiles.

That said, this book is quite different from the last several which she wrote, including Lord of Scoundrels, which has made the top 5 of every "Greatest Romance Ever Written" list I've seen ... the characters themselves remind me more of her earlier work, but with the more complex plot and depth of the more recent work.

In this story, our hero Alistair is the third son of an Earl, a celebrated hero of Waterloo, a dandy, and a man who loves women hugely and impulsively. Mirabel is far too busy managing a vast country estate for her fuzzy-headed father to care much about her appearance, but she certainly *does* care about the fact that the fabulously handsome, beautifully turned out Alistair is threatening everything she's worked for all her life ... and she's not going to let him get away with it!

Sound like a familiar plot? Well, maybe, but I won't tell you more, except to say that what you see is not what you get! Naturally you'll fall in love with them both, and with all the secondary characters (well, not ALL of them ... some are absolute villains!), while learning from them about solving the challenges of the heart, mind and community.

Oh, YOU know what I'm trying to say. Run, do not walk, to your Amazon.com cart and BUY THIS BOOK!

Another good Chase story

Love Loretta chase, this was a good story, but not her best. Had read good reviews on this series. Lord of scoundrels is my favorite so far, but will read next in this series regardless.

so so
By flamingopink
Much too much discussion of the blasted canal! The characters were charming enough, thier quirkiness endearing, and Ms Chase is very descriptive and detailed. However the canal storyline was so over written i found myself skipping some parts to get on with the actual relationship between the hero and heroine. Definitely not as good as "Lord Scoundrel".

They were legends based on myths—myths of fantasy, power, and black magic. The tales of their tours were the most outrageous in the already excess-laden annals of modern music. The era of Led Zeppelin personified sex, drugs, and rock & roll.

Based on interviews with the band's musicians, friends, employees, and lovers, Hammer of the Gods tells the shocking story of Led Zeppelin's successes and excesses in the 70s—when Zeppelin reigned as the industry's biggest act.

Exclusive sources. Documents. Interviews. Photos. Revelations about a band—and an industry—at its shameless peak. Read it all, and see why Hammer of the Gods is a classic of rock journalism in its own right.

"'The biggest surprise success of the year... the Led Zep tale, drenched in sex, drugs and psychic abuse, demonstrated the validity of all the old adages about talent, power and corruption. Stephen Davis's grimy homage to imperial excesss and demonic influence had fans slavering for more' Rolling Stone"

From the Inside Flap
Led Zeppelin was the hottest, hardest, horniest, most hedonistic group in rock history. Their parties defined 60s and 70s excess, their concerts were long, loud and thrilling. Based on interviews and behind-the-scenes stories, here is the truth behind the genius of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and the late John Bonham.

About the Author
Stephen Davis’s many acclaimed books include the Rolling Stones history Old Gods Almost Dead as well as the New York Times bestsellers Walk This Way (with Aerosmith), Fleetwood (with Mick Fleetwood), and the Led Zeppelin history Hammer of the Gods.

Dark comedy
By A Customer
This is the first unauthorized Led Zeppelin biography to emerge in the wake of the band's demise. The road-fever antics of the band and it's crew are told here with aplomb: Richard Cole driving his Harley down the corridor of the Hyatt House in LA, Jimmy Page courting a 14 year old groupie, John Bonham's insatiable appetite for booze and carnage, hotel destruction and wild orgies are all well documented. These stories are pretty funny, if sensational and embellished for comedic effect.
But from the mid '70s onwards, a dark cloud followed the band. From Robert Plant's near fatal car accident in 1975 and his son's death in 1977, Page's descent into heroin addiction in 1976, and ultimately Bonham's fatal vodka binge in September, 1980, the Zeppelin saga certainly has a tragic side.
This book is fairly uneven in that Davis documents Zeppelin's timeline fairly meticulously until 1975, and then he seems to be rushing to get to the end. He also fails to acknowledge that Zeppelin became an erratic live act from 1977 onward due to the deteriorating health of Page and Bonham. Davis would have you believe that in spite of the excessive substance abuse, Zeppelin remained in top form, and there is plenty of recorded evidence to refute that. Having Richard Cole as a primary source tends to undercut the credibility of the book as well. That said, it is obvious that Davis certainly respects Zeppelin's musical accomplishments, and ultimately that is the point. Zeppelin may have overindulged, but the music is what the band will be remembered for.

Good Zep Read - even despite inaccuracies
By G. YEO
Stephen Davis isn't a Zep expert, but this book was spot on in its release at a time when Zep didn't exist anymore back in the mid-80s. I remembered reading it and going wow! This is Led Zeppelin! It is a fun read, but take it with a pinch of salt...much of it is attributed to Richard Cole. The book has never been endorsed by the band, but it's the stuff of what legends are made of. Even Plant admitted in a Musician interview that he didn't much remember what went on in the seventies...if even a portion of what's written here is true - then it makes sense why!
This book did much to promote the legend and legacy of Zep - warts and all...

Book
By D. M. Kabat
"Hammer of the Gods" is very informative as to the organizing and musical abilities of the group members. It gets a little bogged down describing the tours and damage done by various members of the entourage. I think more emphasis could have been made on the creative influences, although these are mentioned in some detail. An interesting read.
