As good as it gets

Rather than harm his wife and child, Dr. Grant Kenyon and his alter ego "Phillip" moved out of his home in New Jersey and trolled I-95 for females. Once Grant snatched the innocent young woman, Phillip would take over and surgically cut the brain out and eat it. He believes that eating fresh human brains will increase his awareness and achieve cosmic consciousness. Grant is modeling his behavior after Daryl Thomas Chockil "The New Jersey Ghoul" who dug up the bodies of dead children in 1990 and ate a part of their brain.
He was incarcerated in a hospital for the mentally insane but has gotten out a month before the skull-digger started killing his victims. The FBI immediately focus their attention on Daryl but medical examiner Dr. Jessica Coran thinks the real killer is setting up The New Jersey Ghoul to take the fall. She persuades her superiors to look for someone who keeps logging on to Daniel's website and after a ton of digging, they find a likely suspect but Jessica almost gets herself killed when she tries to take him in.
Robert W. Walker can always be counted on to create an exciting crime thriller with a villain that readers love to hate. Told from the point of view of the killer, the audience learns that the character suffers from multiple personality disorder but he is so evil, he illicits no sympathy. The novel is also told from the protagonist's point of view and readers sympathize with her feelings of impotence and frustration as she tries to convince her superiors to go after the right person, not the easiest one to blame.

I Agree with Harriet --Doesn't Get Any Better

Grave Instinct is a huge roller-coaster ride from start to finish. It begins at lightning speed and just gets faster from there. Those who can't follow Walker's complex sentences need to go back to school. His style is similar to Martin Cruz Smith -- Gorky Park. He's closer to Faulkner than to Hemmingway. So you don't find a lotta easy sentences and you can't go out for a snack until the scene is finished, but the payoff is amazing. My favorite author and I can't wait to jump into his Absolute Instinct and his new series City for Ransom.

What Happened???
By Can We Read?
I eagerly awaited the release of this in paper back having read all previous Instinct books! The previous books were so well researched, Jessica was smart, savy and knew her proceedure inside out. Nothing slipped past her and she outsmarted everyone!

This book she is like a rookie patrolman. It's like someone else wrote this book and just filled it with shock value murder scenes.

Oh Mr. Walker, this is such a disappointment!

I found this to be a very effective an balanced book/diet

First off, I have suffered with GERD (reflux disease) since I got a stomach ulcer 10 years ago. And I have been using Losec/Nexium steady for years. If I forgot to take it, I got terrible heartburns and such ... I just started the Makers Diet almost two weeks ago, and I stopped using Nexium after the first day, and after the first week I haven't even taken any antacids, like Tums or Garden of Life's Acid Defense. It's a miracle!

I also feel the need to comment on a couple of statements from former reviews.

One statement I find to be just not true:

"First off it is very centered on a protein, animal based diet. I thought there would be more influence on fruit, seeds and grains."

He focuses a lot on what we need from _both_ animal _and_ vegetarian sources. We need fibers, fats (fatty acids), enzymes, vitamins and proteins from both animal and vegetarian sources. This is pretty clear in his book.

Another statement: "It is a very rigid program for a lifetime."

I feel this also is misplaced. The Diet is built up of three two week stages, and the first two weeks is pretty rigid (getting us off our addictions to sugar, caffeine and such) and is designed to fix insulin, infection and inflammation problems. The two next weeks we can eat more stuff, and the last two weeks and the rest of our lives, he simply points out stuff that is not good for us. If we complete the diet to this stage, we will have a stronger immune system that can much better handle it when we don't find just healthy food, or if we have a good time eating cake and candy and stuff.

Another comment: "Cheating, forget it! He suggests if you absolutely must eat things that are off the list, do it within an hours time to avoid any ill effects."

What he says, is a comment to you fulfilling the stages of the diet, especially the first stage. If you really need to break the diet, it's better to eat the "wrong food" in a concetrated period to minimize the damage to the system.

And at last: "As far as items off the list, we aren't just talking cheetos and soda. We are talking cow's milk cheese (goats cheese and milk is a must), and whole grain bread. Sprouted bread is okay in limited portions. Forget about eating out at restaraunts."

I don't this you really get the essence of what Ruben is communicating. He says that we of course will not always find the optimal food and stuff. But if you take the 40 day diet, our overall health will definitively improve. For the rest of your life you should try to avoid the unhealthy stuff, like mentioned in the bible (pork, shellfish, sugar, commercial milk products with antibiotics, hormones and stuff). And we should try to get most products organic/natural, without the poison and rich in nutrients.

Does that mean we can never eat anything else? Of course not. But still it _is_ good to try to avoid the bad stuff ...

As for those accusing Ruben of just trying to make money on the Bible. Please read the book first! He's not saying you need all the Garden of Life products for the rest of your life. He says we need dietary supplements, and those should better be whole food nutrients, not just the chemical stuff (which is not good for us). And for a while, to build up our immune system, HSO's would be very beneficial/helpful.

The book is also pretty clear that both prayer and excersise is an important factor to get well. An important decision you might have to take, is: Do I eat just for pleasure, or do I eat to feed my body the right fuel? To fuel it right will cost you both money and effort, but I think it's going to be worth it.

This is an excellent book, and some of its advice has many parallels with books such as Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Nourishing Traditions, Traditional Foods Are Your Best Medicine, Know Your Fats, and even some concepts from The Zone. What's especially surprising is that it is even supported by the writings of St. Hildegard of Bingen, who wrote 800 years ago.

For those who have less then positive impressions about the book, I ask you to patiently consider:

1) The best source of Vitamin D is the sun, yes, but very few americans spend enough time in the sun due to school and occupations, many wear makeup with sunscreen etc, or live at latitudes or in pollution, all which will prevent a body from manufacturing vitamin D. The Arthritis magazine published about two years ago that most americans are deficient in Vit D, and this may be a cause of Rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, we should try to supplement our diets with NATURAL vitamin D, which can only be found in butter and other animal products. If you are on a cholesteral reducing medication, your body might not be able to manufacture any vitamin D protein. (Wise Traditions, Fall 2006, p 21.) If you are not sure, your doctor can test your vit D levels. It may be an eye-opener.

2) it is a misconception that betacarotene is vitamin A - it is PRO-vitamin A, and requires a conversion to be made into actual Vitamin A. Many people genetically make this conversion very poorly, therefore it is necessary to suppliment. Man made sources of Vitamin A are very toxic, while natural sources such as cod liver oil, are not. Vitamin A can only be found in animal products.

3) regarding processed foods and longevity versus ethnic foods and their quality of life, I suggest reading the comprehensive Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Dr. Weston A. Price. He spent decades traveling the globe and studying the diets of native populations and comparing their longetivity and quality of life statitics. His work is being perpetuated by the Weston A. Price Foundation in Washington, D.C. Dr. Price regularly found people on completely native diets who lived 80 - 120 years PRODUCTIVELY. When these tribes adapted any of the refined food ( white flour, white sugar, etc) illness and deformities almost instantaneously appeared. If these people reverted to their native diets all illness disappeared. Please note that most of these populations studied had next to no cavities although they had never seen a toothbrush. As soon as refined products joined their diets, tooth decay became RAMPANT.

4) the cost of supplements - it is an unfortunate truth that corporate farming has raped the soil of its nutrients. We can thank corporate greed for having to buy the supplements that would otherwise already be in our food supplies. I suggest instead of blaming Dr. Rubin, place the blame where it squarely lies with corporate greed. In the meantime, support your local small farmers markets where emphasis on nutrition is returning, and consume the supplements that you can afford. Under current conditions, can you imagine how much food you would have to eat in order to meet the nutrition these same vegetables had sixty years ago? Its no wonder so many people have cravings, since nutritional needs are not being met.

Enjoy this book and the others mentioned above for the improved health you will have if you can even follow their guidelines 75%. Be realistic and take small steps, if need be!

Also essential to the book are their two children: in "Chicken Livers," Harriet drops in on her feisty daughter, Matina, a fashion model turned medical student; their son, Eric, stars in the powerhouse finale, "Will and Discipline," in which he simultaneously begins and ends his dance career in a dramatic performance. Kobin's masterful control is most noteworthy, followed closely by her ability to unearth subtle but powerful revelations from her conceits and characters. Few writers wring as much emotionally and spiritually from life's ordinary moments, and this is a book that will touch even the most jaded readers. a great concept - short stories woven together for a 'novel'

My husband and I both loved this book, and we're very particular. The concept of the book was special - each story would stand on its own, yet together they wove an intricate story of complex characters [ more complex than one can get with just a short story]. The charaters come to life quickly, they are engaging - you want to know more and like some more than others. I particularly liked each of the children for different reasons - the son because one rarely hears about the life of a male heterosexual dancer; and the daughter because, well you'll have to see for yourself. I highly recommend the book to any sophistocated reader.

Kobin - A Great Discovery

I was totally delighted to discover Joann Kobin's book, Woman Made of Sand. Finally, a book written by an intelligent, mature woman for mature readers. (and people of all ages!) Kobin tells a story of complex family life with insight and wisdom. She has an ability to capture the exquisite pleasures and pains of subtle moments in the everyday lives of any nuclear family. I relished each page of these interwoven stories, and was reluctant to leave the characters when I finished the book. So glad that Woman Made of Sand is now available in paperback so that more people can share the discovery of Kobin's literary talent.

It's good to see private eye Spenser back in Boston, after his ludicrous imitation of a frontier lawman in Robert B. Parker's Potshot. But he's getting nowhere investigating the gunshot murder of banker Nathan Smith in Widow's Walk. The cops figure Smith's ingenuous but unfaithful young wife, Mary, pulled the trigger. She denies it. Spenser, hired by former prosecutor Rita Fiore to help build Mary Smith the best defense her money can buy, isn't sure either way, and the more time he spends on this case (dense with business and sexual deceptions), the more perplexed he becomes.

Of course, our poetry-spouting hero finally catches a break by linking Smith's demise to a convoluted real-estate scam. The rest of the novel offers plenty of Parker's characteristically witty dialogue, the slayings of several informants that you know from the get-go are toast, and ample opportunities for Spenser and his robustly menacing sidekick, Hawk, to intimidate lesser thugs. Unfortunately, the author isn't as attentive to the needs of other series regulars, including Spenser inamorata Susan Silverman, whose restrained jealousy toward lawyer Fiore ("Rita is sexually rapacious and perfectly amoral about it. I'm merely acknowledging that") and self-flagellation over a gay client's suicide somehow add no new depth to her character.

Parker has a propulsive prose style and can still concoct engrossing stories; his 2001 standalone Western, Gunman's Rhapsody, is a fine example. Widow's Walk doesn't quite meet that standard. Though entertaining, it's an unsatisfying chapter in a series that's become too predictable. --J. Kingston Pierce

Last year Parker published three strong novels including the excellent Spenser mystery Potshot. So he's entitled to a miss and a pass and gets one with this forgettable Spenser entry. Attorney Rita Fiore, who's worked with the Boston PI before, hires Spenser to find out if her new client, Mary Smith, whom Spenser's cop pal Quirk describes as "dumber than my dick," indeed shot to death her husband, banker and Mayflower descendant Nathan Smith, as the evidence indicates. Spenser's search for the truth takes him into one of the most confusing (for the PI and the reader) cases of his long career; unusual for Parker, pages are needed at book's end to explain who did what and why. Sidekick Hawk pitches in to protect Spenser, and gunsel Vinnie Morris lends a hand, too, as several folks Spenser talks to wind up dead, and as the PI is trailed, then attacked, by thugs headquartered at a crooked land development company with ties to the dead man's bank. Susan, Spenser's beloved, offers some advice as well, but the ritual appearances by Spenser's crew, human and animal (Pearl the Wonder Dog, ancient and slow, waddles in here and there), while earning a nod of gratitude from series fans, do little to advance or deepen the proceedings. The novel stirs to life only fitfully, most notably in the confrontational exchanges between a female lawyer implicated in the crimes and her powerful attorney father; here, Parker taps into truth about familial loyalties. The writing is as clean as fresh ice, and from the opening sentence (" `I think she's probably guilty,' Rita Fiore said to me"), it's clear that readers are in the hands of a vet who knows what he's doing; but what Parker is doing here is, alas, not very interesting. Who Killed Nathan Smith?

After reading Robert B. Parker's latest Spenser incarnation, WIDOW'S WALK, I don't think I can answer that question. I suspect that anyone else reviewing this book will come to the same conclusion if they re-read the last 75 pages of the book. As such and given the incredibly high marks given by most reviewers of this book, I fear my review will be quite unpopular.
Spenser is hired by the leggy redhead attorney, Rita Fiore (a returning character) to find out who killed Nathan Smith. Smith, a blue blood banker with an impeccable reputation in Boston, was killed in his bed allegedly while his much younger wife, Mary, was watching television in another part of their three-story home. Without the appearance of a break-in or security breach, all circumstantial evidence points to Mary as suicide has been ruled out given the absence of the gun at the crime scene. When Spenser begins questioning Mary, he immediately finds that she lacks the intellectual capacity to string together basic sentences much less understand how or why her husband has been killed. Spenser's not so certain that Mary is deficient in mental faculty department or is putting on a grandiose act.
As Spenser begins his investigation, he immediately picks up a tail. After interviewing the Smiths' stockbroker, Spenser is accosted by the two tailing thugs. In true Spenser fashion, he provides his would-be attackers with the beating they so richly deserve. Shortly thereafter, people directly and peripherally attached to this case begin dying in savage order. Parker takes the reader through the typical investigatory scheme and provides a climax that left this reader scratching his head.
I've read all of Parker's Spenser novels and typically wait anxiously for the next offering. However, with this particular novel, I'm wondering what Bob was thinking. He maintains his easy-to-read chapters and storyline cadence of previous Spenser offerings but in this reviewer's opinion, that's about it. Several things were missing here: 1) a heavy dose of Spenser witticisms {Parker typically has me laughing out loud with Spenser's one-liners; not so here}, 2) an incredible lack of Hawk and his captivating mannerisms {if one is a true fan of Spenser, you know what I mean), 3) lack of character development of the resident villain (I don't know what to say here; Parker has an uncanny knack of providing the reader the psyche of the book's villain; not so in WIDOW'S WALK), and 4) WHO KILLED NATHAN SMITH?! As to my last comment here, the individual(s) responsible for the death of Nathan Smith is never disclosed.
All in all, a very disappointing Spenser for me however, as a true fan, I'll be there for the next offering.

Nobody Cares

In a scene in Robert Parker's "Widow's Walk," Spenser is explaining his newest case to Susan Silverman while she makes egg salad. When I found myself thinking about why Susan would decide to use Miracle Whip instead of mayonaise, and paying no attention to whether Spenser's ditsy blonde client killed her husband, I realized that something had gone seriously wrong here. Even Parker is more interested in the egg salad than he should be. He doesn't seem to care about the people he created, nor about what happens to them.
I can understand it, poor guy. Imagine trying to keep caring when you're writing the twenty-ninth book of a series. But, although it is easy to understand, it is not at all easy to keep ploughing through the result.
"Widow's Walk" is a badly written book, and even Spenser himself -- who's greatest appeal for me is his rock-solid resolve to help wherever he can -- can't help on this one. He says, more than half-way through the book, that he has no idea what is going on with his case. And neither do we.
The novels we never forget share one thing in common. They make us care a very great deal about what happens to their characters. Pick up "The Count of Monte Cristo" and you'll see that Dumas accomplished it in what may be a record, in the first paragraphs of the first page. Dickins does it. Tolstoy does it. Flaubert does it. And Parker does it. Paul Giacomin as he grew into himself, under Spenser's inimitable guidance, is a beautifully wrought and memorable character.
Spenser lends his strength, his wit, his savvy and his great heart to his clients because he cares what happens to them. And so do we. But not in "Widow's Walk."
Forget this one happened, Parker, and please do it for us again.

A standard Spenser novel -- and that ain't bad

There are no big surprises in "Widow's Walk" and no great social questions to be explored. It is very much a standard Spenser novel, where the stalwart and flippant Boston PI takes on the bad guys. The case is simple: investigate the murder of a wealthy banker to help his much younger blonde wife beat the homicide charge. She can't be as dumb as she seems. Or maybe she really is. Spenser and Hawk and Susan are their usual selves. Not an earthshaking novel, but a good fast read that kept me turning the pages as more and more bodies piled up. Hey, "Widow's Walk" isn't going to win the Pulitzer Prize, but I'll be waiting happily for next year's Spenser novel...

THE ROAD OF ADVENTURE is by Robin D. Owens. Ms. Owens has set her own standards and rules for her stories. This is quite evident and infused in this tale. This story sings of a brilliant imagination and amazing freshness.

Ms. Owens creates a storyline and dialogue with a language, which she can only invoke. What a beautiful soul Shauna is to behold, but she too, is lacking something. While Jake can be a jerk at times, in his heart lurks a determined and loving man. Can they both learn together? Ms. Owens definitely has an affinity for animals, which this reviewer loved! This story is a true testament to Ms. Owens' literary talents, magnificent!

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME is a dream come true anthology to read and review! All three stories threaded together to create wonderful memories for this reader. The characters and storylines are vivid and memorable. They could not have found three better authors to pair-up to make this outstanding anthology! This is a first 5 hearts review for an anthology this reviewer has ever given. It is a flawless book! Do not hesitate to buy this at your local bookstore and/or online store. A wonderfully remarkable paranormal compilation called... WHAT DREAMS MAY CAME.

three fabulous fantasy romances

"Knightly Dreams" by Sherrilyn Kenyon. After catching her boyfriend Rob Carpenter in a position with his secretary that would make them the centerfold lovers of the Karma Sutra, Taryn Edwards swears off love. That is until Esther the bookstore owner introduces her to an old fashioned knight in shining armor, Sparhawk the Brave. That is literature so how come he is by her side and she is in love.

"Shattered Dreams" by Rebecca York. Near Monterrey, California Miranda Grove feels alone while her once teenage lover Caleb Marcuso sculptures her in stone to replace the flesh and blood he still desires even though several years have passed since their families separated them. Yet they share a psychic connection perhaps because their love never stopped flowing, but will that prove enough to bring them together before as she knows only he can save her from an evil trying to kill her?

"Road of Adventure" by Robin D. Owens. Jake thought Boris the cat is the ugliest creature he ever saw. When the feline talked to Jake he almost soiled his underwear. Boris is back from the beyond to fix an error he inadvertently caused during one of his lives. Jake and Shauna were supposed to be lovers forever, but somehow failed in spite of their destiny. The ghostly cat plans to give them a second chance together in love on the "Road of Adventure".

These are three fabulous fantasy romances that enable the audience to escape into a world where the reading is fun, fine, and fantastic.

charming tales from 3 top flight paranormal writers

"Road of Adventure" by Robin D. Owens, is not one of her Celta tales, but it does have a charming irrepressible Cat - BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRISSSSSS. Boris is a ghost cat, more specifically an angel cat, even though Jake thinks he is the ugliest creature he's ever laid eyes upon. Borrrrrrriiiissssssssss belongs to Shauna, a gentle soul, loves growing things and animals, why she thinks Boris is beautiful! Boris cannot get his real angel wings - mine mine mine mine mine mine mine - until he brings Jake and Shauna together. Boris very desperately wants his wings and his golden halo, but sniffs at Jake as the possible mate for Shauna. HIS Shauna is much too good for the macho cop. They were destined to find their fates together, but something happened, and each took a wrong turn and died. Now with their guide Borrrisssssssssss, they are sent back, Jack to do it again and hopefully get it right. It's a delightful tale with Boris stealing the show, but isn't that natural??? Worthy buying for Owens tale alone.

Rebecca York has been a long time fav of mine with her consistent work for Harlequin and now her werewolf series. Again, she comes through with a delightful tale called "Shattered Dreams". Miranda often thinks of her teenage love Caleb. Once he sculpted her in stone. Despite time and separation, Caleb still wants Miranda. Their bond that defies all calls him to save the women he once loved before from an evil wanting to claim her life.

Sherrilyn Kenyon gives us a charming tale, though the weakest of the three, about "Knightly Dreams". As with all Kenyon tales read for the charm of the story not for the historical accuracy. When she catches her boyfriend with his secretary doing the Wild Thang, Tayrn is ready to put males on the endangered species list. Then a bookstore owner shows her a real knight in shining armour. It really stretches the imagination a tad. He is in a book, and suddenly he is there and she adores him. Face it, if that's all it took, J.D. Robb's Roarke would be giving me a massage right now!

Kathryn Reynolds swept a lock of fiery red hair away from her forehead and rocked back in her chair.

Rolling the tension out of her shoulders, she stared critically at the computer screen. Two days ago she’d been happy with the brochure she was designing for Sunrise Realty.

Now...

Now she had the nagging feeling there was something wrong. Was the text readable enough against the background of rising suns? Should she use a bolder font?

She had just clicked on the color chart when she heard footsteps on the front porch of the white Victorian she’d inherited from Grandma O’Shea.

Heather! Thank God. She hadn’t realized until that moment how worried she was. But her sigh of relief evaporated with the sound of the doorbell. Heather wouldn’t ring the bell. Unless she’d lost her key––and forgotten about the one she’d hidden under a rock in the bushes. Which, actually, she wouldn’t put past her friend and downstairs tenant. Heather had a lot of excellent qualities, but she was also a bit of a flake.

Speaking of which––

The bell sounded a second time, and a male voice called out, “Anybody home?” Kathryn looked down at the long, bare legs protruding from beneath her Redskins tee shirt. Damn! She’d done it again––gotten up and started working, then lost track of the time.

Now it was afternoon, and she wasn’t exactly dressed for company. Sprinting into the bedroom, she grabbed the pair of knit shorts she’d left on the chair, pulling them on as she crossed the worn Oriental rug.

After unlocking the door to her apartment, she hurried barefoot down the stairs to the sound of pounding on the front door, then looked through the beveled glass window.

A dark-haired man in a blue uniform stood on the porch, and her mouth went dry.

It was him!

No. She canceled the spurt of panic. It wasn’t him. He was too young. Too heavy. It wasn’t the guy with the white van she’d seen off and on around the neighborhood for the past week––acting busy. He’d given her a creepy feeling, and she’d asked a couple of neighbors if they knew what he was doing. Nobody had been sure. She hadn’t seen him for a few days; and, for a moment, she’d thought...But it wasn’t him.

Slipping the door on the chain, she opened it and asked, “Can I help you?”

“Heather DeYoung?”

“She’s not home right now.”

The man looked annoyed. “She’s supposed to be here between three and six.”

“I’m sorry. Can I help you?” she asked again.

“Mr. Fisher asked me to bring over these carpet samples she wanted to see.”

Heather had complained about the carpet in the bedroom, and Kathryn had said she’d go in with her on replacing it. But obviously she couldn’t make the selection by herself.

“I’m sorry, you’ll have to come back when she gets home.”

He jutted out his jaw. “And when will that be?”

“I don’t know.”

“Yeah, well, I’m late for an installation job because of her, so tell her to get back to Mr. Fisher.”

“I’ll give her the message.”

He picked up a vinyl case he’d set down and stamped back across the porch, leaving Kathryn standing in the vestibule that led to both apartments. Turning to her right, she stared at her friend’s door.

When had she last seen Heather? Saturday night? She wasn’t sure, because she’d been working on a couple of jobs, and she hadn’t been paying attention. It wasn’t unusual for Heather to take off for the weekend. And it wasn’t even unusual for her to extend a minivacation into the next week––since she worked as a substitute teacher and could turn down assignments if she wanted. But usually she was back by Monday afternoon. Now it was Tuesday. And she still wasn’t home.

Kathryn pressed her hand against the wall, running her fingers over the raised strips in the wallpaper, staring at Heather’s door. She owned the apartment. She could go in if she wanted and look around, but her own sense of privacy was very strong. So she wasn’t going to invade Heather’s space just because she was feeling jumpy.

And what would she be looking for if she did go inside? A body? Signs of a struggle?

She grimaced, knowing she was letting her imagination run away with her now.

Slowly she climbed back up the stairs, stepped into her apartment, and locked the door––looking around at the cozy space where her graphic design business shared her living quarters. After Gran had died, she could have moved down to the first floor. But she liked being up here, liked the extra light and the view of the garden––and not having anyone walking around above her. She loved the high ceilings and the old wooden floors and the carefully crafted woodwork that made her home so different from the tract housing developers were slapping up these days. More than that, she was comfortable here. Maybe too comfortable. Sometimes she knew she had a tendency to close herself off like a hermit crab ducking into its shell.

Which was why her friendship with Heather DeYoung, who rented the apartment downstairs, had been so good for her.

The woman could be maddening. Exasperating. A total flake. And at the same time a really good friend. In the year and a half that Heather had lived downstairs, they’d gotten into the habit of hanging out together––taking power walks in the afternoons, going on shopping expeditions. Talked long into the evening about movies and books and the guys in their lives. Shared their problems.

So did her friend have a problem now? Something she hadn’t felt comfortable bringing up? Like that little episode last year?

She crossed to the window, ducked under The Spider Plant That Took over the World, and stared down at the bright pink and red azaleas in full bloom, then flicked her gaze back to the empty space in the driveway where her tenant’s burgundy Honda was usually parked.

“Dammit, Heather,” she muttered. “Where are you? Atlantic City, cleaning up at the slot machines? Why don’t you take a minute to give me a call and let me know you’re okay?”

Like magic, the phone rang, and she blinked––then sprinted back to the desk and snatched up the receiver.

“Hello?”

There was no answer.

“Hello?”

The silence stretched, and she carefully replaced the receiver in the cradle as she looked at the caller I.D.

It said “Unavailable.” So it was probably just one of those automated telemarketing calls. Not Heather trying to check in. Or calling to say her car had broken down because she’d forgotten to change the oil.

Like she’d forgotten to charge the battery on her cell phone. Which was probably why there was no answer when Kathryn had called that number.

She grimaced. Maybe it was time to check in with Heather’s boyfriend, Gary Swinton. He was a strange guy. Secretive. Always acting superior, like he knew something Kathryn didn’t. Privately she called him The Swine, and she’d told Heather she could do better; but Gary was still in and out of her bed on a semiregular basis.

After looking up his number in her Rolodex and dialing, she counted five rings before an answering machine picked up.

“Hey, this is Gary. I really want to talk to you. So leave a message.”

Yeah, sure, she thought. Probably she was the last person he wanted to talk to, because she’d made her feelings about him pretty clear.

She almost hung up. Then she took a breath and said in an upbeat voice, “Hi. This is Kathryn Reynolds. I’m trying to reach Heather. She needs to set up an appointment to look at the bedroom carpet samples. If she’s with you, could you ask her to give me a call?” She finished by leaving her number, all the time picturing Gary sitting by the machine, listening to her talk.

She considered driving down to his place. But he lived in D.C., in Adams Morgan––not a neighborhood she liked to walk through alone at night. And it would be dark by the time she got there.

With a sigh, she picked up the magic wand sitting on the desk. Too bad she couldn’t wave it, say “abracadabra,” and command her tenant to appear. Unfortunately, the wand was just a hollow plastic tube about a foot long, one of the toys she liked to play with while she was thinking. It was filled with shiny stars and moons floating in a viscous blue liquid. Turning it on end, she watched the heavenly bodies shoot upward in a swirl of blue, but they didn’t give her...

bang-on paranormal tale by talented writer

I think I have read everything Rebecca York wrote for the Harlequin Intrigues line - and continue to do so - and she's never failed to keep me turning page after page. However, with her Moon series for Berkley, she crafts stunning tales of werewolves with a skill that provides goosebumps!

Graphics designer Kathryn Reynold's neighbour vanishes, but she is beginning to see this is a sinister patterns for others has gone missing, too. An old lady, then a child, later a teenage boy. What could their disappearances have in common? However, when she meets detective Jack Thornton, she has other things on her mind as well, because the attraction to him is nearly overwhelming.

And the attraction is the same on Jack's part. He thought he was responding to a routine call of a missing person, so he never expected to run into the wall of emotions evoked by Kathryn. The dreams they begin sharing are so intense, they nearly shatter his control. But as the dreams intensify, he comes to sense another presence, one who is manipulating both Kathryn and him. As the cat and mouse game whre a killer is upping the odds, Jack fears Kathryn might be the next victim.

It's tense, dark and brooding and right on target!!

Second in the Moon series for York and is a must for paranormal fans.

York's second book......page turning success

After reading The Killing Moon I realized that the second book was about Jack Thornton. I was kind of hesitant about reading it, but it really wasn't as bad as I would've thought. In fact it was better! Is it better than the first one?....hard to say. I would say that they are about equal. I give this book 4 stars because York put something more into the plot to make it a quick page turner. You would at first think that a character like Jack wouldn't be as exiting as the male character from the first book, but he is just as good. I just became a fan of R. York. I can't wait to read the third one.

A house to die for.

In "Murder Plays House," by Ayelet Waldman, lawyer and part-time sleuth Juliet Applebaum is bursting at the seams. Literally. She has gained fifty pounds during her third pregnancy and she and her husband, Peter, need a bigger house for their growing family. The problem is that a desirable house in L. A. is not easy to get unless the buyers are filthy rich, which Juliet and her husband most certainly are not.
While house hunting with her realtor friend one day, Juliet stumbles upon a dead body in the bathtub. The owner of the house, who is the victim's brother, retains Juliet to help investigate the case. Along with her partner, Al, Juliet starts digging into the life of the deceased, an out-of-work actress named Alicia Felix.
Juliet interviews Alicia's former co-workers, ex-boyfriend, and anyone else with a possible connection to the crime. At the same time, the mother-to-be is trying to cope with her out-of-control appetite and ungainly shape, while also tending to the needs of her husband and young children.
"Murder Plays House" has its moments. Juliet is witty and sassy, and Waldman's wry humor and satirical treatment of the shallow L. A. culture are right on target. The author has a go at the trendy fashions, the insane desire to be thin at all costs, and the desperation of marginally talented actors to make it in show biz.
Waldman has trouble, however, balancing her lighthearted humor with the book's tragic elements, most of which are introduced in the second half of the novel. The carefree tone of the book's opening gives way to a somewhat somber and preachy ending. Although the plots of the "Mommy-Track Mysteries" are only passable, I keep reading them because of my fondness for Waldman's irresistible and down-to-earth heroine, Juliet Applebaum.

She was a public defender but after giving birth to two children, Juliet Appleton quit to become a full time mother. When she became bored, she and her friend Al opened up their own private investigate business that still doesn't pay their salaries. When Juliet discovers that she is pregnant for a third time, she realizes it time to move into a house with lots of rooms. Her husband Peter, a horror screenwriter, agrees with her. Juliet finds the perfect house for her family.
After inspecting the home and loving every inch of it, Juliet looks in the guest house where she finds Alicia Felix, the owner's sister, dead in the bathtub, her body knifed countless times. When she talks to Felix about buying the home he tells her he is grieving for his sister and is not ready to move. Juliet agrees to represent Felix and his lover Farzad in their dealings with the police; she and Farzad agree that she will be given special consideration to buy the house if she finds the killer. It's not easy being eight months pregnant and conducting a homicide investigation but Juliet tries anyway.
Ayelet Waldman's mommy Track mysteries get progressively feistier and wittier mainly due to the situations the protagonist finds herself in. Juliet is outrageous as she investigates and sometimes with her two children accompanying her interviews a suspect who might yield information that will lead to the killer. MURDER PLAYS HOUSE is a well thought out mystery that uses a social problem as the basis for the killing. Readers will adore Juliet and her two (no make that three) munchkins.

a fun read

Heavily pregnant Juliet Applebaum needs to find a new home for a her expanding family and fast! Not only are their current digs not going to be big enough to accommodate three children and two adults, but the people who have bought the lot next to the place they're renting have started an extensive remodeling work, and husband, Peter, a horror screen play writer (who works at the night and sleeps during the day) is getting no sleep at all and his work is suffering. Finding a nice and affordable house in LA is no easy feat; fortunately Juliet has an ace up her sleeve: her good friend Kat is a real estate agent -- albeit a heavily pregnant and quite reluctant real estate agent. Morosely, Kat agrees to go house hunting with Juliet. And when Kat shows her the magnificently restored house that Kat's cousin (Farzad) and his gay lover (fashion designer, Felix) are planning to sell, Juliet immediately falls in love with the house. Unfortunately the house also comes with the dead body of the Felix's sister, Alice. Once again Juliet finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation. But this time, solving the murder ahead of the police may actually net Juliet her dream house. Now all Juliet has to do is successfully discover who murdered Alice and why, as well juggling childcare, and making sure she doesn't give birth in the middle of her investigation...
If you're looking for a mystery novel that is full of snappy dialogue and that takes a humourous look at the life of a young(ish) mother in LA, you're bound to enjoy "Murder Plays House." Juliet is an engaging and taking character, and her attempts to be the perfect mother and understanding spouse, while trying to juggle a career as a private detective and her own needs, were truly funny and entertaining to read. However, mystery-wise, things were a bit of a let down. For example the mystery subplot was not all that well developed, and actually unfolded in a rather uneven manner, at the expense of the "mommy-track" subplot. Leads and suspects pittered out very quickly, so that when Juliet finally solved the case, it felt as if luck more than deduction was key to resolving everything. Though I will admit that because of the snappy dialogue and Juliet's engaging accounting on what it was like to be an average mom amongst the LA rich, "Murder Plays House" turned out to be a lively read. Also well done was the commentary on the lengths that some will go to in order to remain as young looking and as thin as possible. So that while the mystery angle left a bit to be desired, the storyline and narrative style made "Murder Plays House" an enjoyable yet sobering read.
