Second "Prey" thriller delivers solid police action and tension-filled story

I enjoyed "Rules of Prey", the first entry in Mr. Sandford's long-running "Prey" series, so I happily picked up this follow-up title. This was very good, too: lots of tension, good banter between the cops, a challenging case, and some interesting fringe stuff involving Lucas Davenport's newest lady love and his other domestic challenges.

As far as cop thrillers go, there's nothing particularly earth shattering or ground breaking here, but I think that's the point: Mr. Sandford knows what a good cop thriller should be and delivers it, not worrying about throwing in gimmicky plot contrivances to set it apart from other thrillers. The entertainment comes from solid craftmanship, Sandford's eye for detail, a dozen or so engaging characters, and a good thriller story.

I also liked the shades of grey that complicate the proceedings in several areas. For example, one can't really blame the criminal antagonists here for wanting to accomplish their goals, which is to draw attention to the injustices against American Indians and exact revenge for one particular injustice. But things quickly spiral out of control when the antagonists use new violence to respond to old violence. And things are further complicated because one of the antagonists really likes doing violence, with "the cause" only being a convenient excuse to undertake it.

Like the new edition of "Rules of Prey" that I recently read, this new edition of "Shadow Prey" features a brief but illuminating new introduction by the author, where he discusses the challenges of coming up with a good follow up to a successful debut thriller.

Getting tired

These are becoming a bit formulaic. The character development is not so hot. The treatment of the main character is as a cardboard cut out, so much that one can predict a lot of what he will do and say. The plot screams right along, the bad guy is bad, it's a nice breazy, quick read. Get the paper back.

The only thing I can say about any Prey novel is the same thing I say about anything John Sandford writes........it's awesome!!!!!
He is the best author that I have read in a long time and I read a lot of books.
I am never disappointed with his writing and I love Lucas. Wish he was real.

Great Book of the ICON, that is "Rowdy" Roddy Piper

If you're a true wrestling fan, ths is a must have. Piper talks about:
*his days on the street, literally homeless
*being stabbed numerous times
*Alot of great funny road stories. REALLY amusing stuff!!
*Wrestling on the indys in Portland, Charolette, and L.A., and overseas
*Talks abot his bad experience with Ole Anderson and Jim Barnett, a promoter while working in Atlanta.
*Being "ribbed" (practical joke) on his first WWF appearance in New York City and returning 10 years thereafter.
*Piper also talks about how he met his wife and talks about his family.
*His dog-collar matches that are still remembered with Greg Valentine.
*Talks about his dislikes and a real shoot with Mr. T. and where Mr. T messed up at WM2.
*The creation of Piper's Pit (and he gets in detail of how the infamous coconcut incident with Jimmy Sunka appeared).
*His WrestleMania 3 farewell match against Adrian Adonis.
*Being stabbed in the back by some of "the boys" (wrestlers).

--When I purchased this book, it seemed as if it was not enough pages to cover the legendary status of a man who's been on top for so many years. However, he was completely honest and he was very accurate w./in detail of the life he led and what made him a superstar. He also talks about the tricks of putting on a memorable interview an segments (especially with Hulk Hogan). Its only [a price], so don't be cheap.. you won't regret it. Also has black n white and color pics in the book of his family and his wrestling years. GREAT READ and a 10++++. Hot Rod, you are a true icon in the sport. Thank you!

Excellent and honest

There are so many awful books coming out which cater to Vince McMahon and dance around the truth and Roddy Piper does not go that route. He is honest about everything in his career. He doesn't hold back. This is an incredible read that really takes you into the ongoings of every major part of Roddy's career.
He tells it like it is. You really learn all about Piper's life, his career and all the controversy of drug abuse in the wrestling business that Vince McMahon likes to censor from his books. This isn't Jerry Lawler or Hogan's puff piece. This is one of the best wrestling autobiographies to put in your library. It is definitely one of the best books I have ever read and I recommend it to all real wrestling fans, not the casual fans.

From Wrestling to Sport entertainment

Piper's book make for a fast read and educating insight into the wrestling world. It helps seeing the emergence of WWF through the wrestler's eyes rather than through the promoter's as was mostly the case in Shaun Assael's book.
Some affirmations by Piper sounded presumptuous but I will leave to the Meltzers of this world the task of critizing the accuracy of the book since I don't have the knowledge to do so.
I enjoyed reading it for that frank and honest look at the world of wrestling and at the changes that happened with the rise of WWF. It is also nice to learn about all the other wrestlers through Piper's account of his interaction with them.
Chapter 12 is particularly interesting since Piper takes head-on what he calls "the sickness": the overwhelming bearing on the life of wrestlers that wrestling has, mainly because of the promoters manipulations and the lifestyle according to him.
It is definatly worth reading.

Very good, but not excellent ...

"Portrait in death" is the 18th book in J.D. Robb's futuristic "In death" series. If you haven't read the previous books in the series, please start by the first one, "Naked in death", and continue reading them in order. If you do that, I promise you that you will enjoy the series much more.

Now, and regarding this book, did I like it? The answer is simple, yes. Do I think I did the right thing purchasing it? Again, yes, because it is entertaining and certainly a keeper. The plot was good, and Eve and Roarke are, as always, a wonderful couple. There is a good whoddunnit, and we discover a mystery that has to do with Roarke's family, a secret that shakes Roarke so much that he closes up to Eve and puts their relationship in danger.

Despite all that, I do not think that this book was outstanding when compared to the other books in the series. Anyway, for those who are fans of J.D.Robb , "Portrait in death" will be a welcome addition to your library. It brings quite a strange role reversal: in this opportunity is Eve who takes care of Roarke while he tries to come to terms with some revelations regarding his past (more specifically his mother). There is also a good crime story, about a killer who chooses his victims due to their beauty, follows them and murders them, never forgetting to photograph them just after he slays them, believing that by doing that he will own their beauty and innocence forever.

So, if you have already read some of J.D. Robb's books I recommend you to buy "Portrait in death" too, because you are highly likely to enjoy it. I know I did :)

As usual J.D. Robb has done a superb job. Eve Dallas, NYPD, is ever bit the cop woman. She is rough, but gentle quite a contradiction.Only J.D. Robb could pull that act off. Learning to balance the life of a cop who stands in for the dead and the life as a wife to the wealthy, steely, but oh so good-looking Roarke is quite a juggling act. There again, only with J. D.Robb could this be done. The book,"Portrait In Death" holds the reader spell bound and wanting more. J. D. not only holds her audience captive and spell bound but alwo delievers a story that is well researched. I have the entire Death series and this book is just as fantastic as the first. Eve and Roarke have come along way!These characters along with all the others in the book are so real and alive. When you finish the book it is with sadness that you must leave these characters that have indeed become your family and friends. As an avid reader and a teacher, my hat is off th you, J.D. Robb. Please hurry with more death series books. I can't wait to get back to my friends!

I couldn't put it down!

Successful novelist Reilly Alexander has tried to move on and forget the past, but he's now back in Diablo Springs, Arizona, his hometown and the scene of all his troubles. Although he never planned on returning home, he is intrigued by the psychic claims of an eccentric woman and finds himself strangely drawn back to this place. Many believe Diablo Springs is haunted by its original settlers, but for Reilly the ghosts are much closer to home.

Having left her hometown seventeen years ago, Gracie Beck is also unexpectedly called back to Diablo Springs after her daughter is in a mysterious car accident and her grandmother dies on the same night. She finds her daughter safe, and although she'd love to leave and never look back, her grandmother's hotel, now her responsibility, is full of paying guests. One of those guests turns out to be Reilly, a former high school crush which ended horribly wrong. Although there is bad blood between them, Reilly and Gracie are still attracted. Even if they can resolve the issues of their past, there are bigger troubles ahead. There is something sinister happening in this small town! Will the sins of the past haunt them forever? Can they break the curse of Diablo Springs and begin again?

Combining contemporary and historical settings, Whispers is a well crafted paranormal romance. Ms. Grady knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat, scared out of your pants, and yet still wanting more! I found both Gracie and Reilly to be interesting people, but wished to learn more of their story. With numerous characters and interwoven plots, their romance was sometimes lost in the shuffle. I had a hard time accepting Gracie's forgiveness of Reilly, and their intimacy felt rushed. However, these are all minor issues and didn't ultimately get in the way of my enjoyment. As with her previous book Echos, Ms. Grady got my heart pounding and my mind engaged. Ms. Grady truly has a way with words and knows how to build suspense. Whispers drew me in and I couldn't put the story down.

Erin Grady proves she's the real thing

I have been looking forward to reading "Whispers" since the day I turned the last page of "Echoes". After reading "Echoes" I wondered if Erin Grady was as gifted a writer as she appeared to be. Now the reviews are in. Grady has proven that she's the real thing and her readers are the true winners.

I finished "Whispers" in just two nights. It was worth my sleep deprivation to finish this extraordinardy blend of historical fiction, paranormal romance, and modern suspense. Despite my aversion to the paranormal I found myself believing every beautifully written word of this tale. I was drawn the town of Diablo Springs and to the characters, past and present, that populated the skillfully interwoven stories of Ella and Gracie, Sawyer and Reilly, Athena and Chloe.

My only regret is that I now have to wait for Grady's next book.

A Haunting tale of generational curses

Wow, this was my first taste of Ms Grady, but definitly not my last. Whispers - A haunting tale of generational curses. Erin Grady presents her story in a unique way of telling the past tense in first person, and the present tense in third person. She weaves together a tale of lost love, steamy romance, and generational conflicts all with a supernatural twist. I love how she brought all her characters to life by her descriptive prose and modern analogies. I look forward to reading more by this author.

In 1970, 20-year-old Howard Stamp is convicted of brutally killing his 57-year-old grandmother with a carving knife; three years later, he commits suicide in prison. In 2002, London anthropologist Jonathan Hughes includes the Stamp case in his book, Disordered Minds, which examines infamous miscarriages of justice. The mentally slow Stamp may have been coerced into confessing to the murder. George (Georgina) Gardener, an elderly councilor living in Stamp's hometown of Bournemouth, has come to believe in Stamp's innocence herself and asks Jonathan for help in clearing the young man's name. The two get off to a rocky start, but they form an uneasy alliance that gradually grows into a deep friendship. Watching this relationship develop is one of the novel's more entertaining aspects. Walters uses to good effect the multiple viewpoints of her numerous characters, as well as flashbacks, letters, newspaper articles and e-mails to reveal the truth behind the decades-old murder. However, as in life, there are no easy answers, and although the ending may disappoint some, it caps perfectly all that has come before it.

About the Author
Minette Walters is the Edgar Award-winning author of six previous novels of intrigue, most recently The Breaker. Worth reading, weak last 3rd

As has been said, this isn't Walter's best book or top third. But it's worth reading for the interplay between Jon and George, who could be further pursued as characters in the future. But the last third of the book leaves much dropped or weakly resolved and lacking in drama. So read it for the characters and the change in writing styles. It's not boring, just a disheartening ending.

Sure doesn't compare to Elizabeth George..

"C+" Effort From an "A" Student

Walters is a passionate storyteller, and she always infuses her plots with complex social and family conflicts in an engaging manner. The characters in all her novels are quite interesting, and they each have a ring of truth and vulnerability that makes them appealing to us readers.

The reasons people might not call this their favorite MW book:

--Plot is too convoluted. There are so many characters telling so many different versions of these events! After a while, you get a little frustrated trying to keep it all organized in your mind (although you have to admire Walters for being able to keep it all straight herself).

--Weak ending. Although the pertinent questions in the novel are answered, they trickle in at the last few pages in as weak a manner as possible. There's no satisfying comeuppance for any of the guilty parties.

--Suspects' garrulousness. All the people who were present for the tragic events in 1970 Bournemouth feel compelled to answer our nosy protagonists' questions and accusations. If Roy, Priscilla, or any of the others had been sensible, they would have just said "Huh--I'd like to help, but I'm busy right now."

--Foolish political diatribe. For no reason whatsoever, Walters has one of her characters (George--was that ironic, Minny?) spew silly anti-Bush/Blair emesis on a few pages. It has nothing to do with the plot, and it just makes her seem like a foaming, impractical, and close-minded liberal.

She's Minette Walters, and she's great. Her books have psychological credibility and almost always grip you with an unshakable chill of foreboding until you reach the last page. This one wasn't one of her best, but I'm still keeping my eye out for her next release, The Tinder Box.

A Disappointment

Sadly, this book was not up to the standard I would expect from Minette Walters. From the title, and from Walters' reputation and previous books, one would anticipate a chilling psychological study. But the psychological elements of the murder are bog-standard for any contemporary mystery--none of the "revelations" were remotely surprising.

Walters also goes to a great deal of trouble, early in the book, to establish that one of her main characters, Dr. Jonathan Hughes, has deep emotional problems. Hughes' background and personality are developed at length over the first 150 pages or so, and then the whole issue basically vanishes. Hughes' long-rooted problems apparently receive a miracle cure when he befriends a vibrant older woman. It's a cliche worthy of bad television.

Then there's the prose. The novel suffers from both flatness and "info-dump." Walters drowns us, early on, in vague sociological generalities that are never given life by the book's plot or characters. She makes the novice writer's mistake of telling instead of showing. The novel's tone is lifeless, and the way the plot develops (endless recountings of a few days' events) doesn't help. There's also a certain element of preachiness about racism, poverty, and the Iraq war, which was enough to get on my nerves even though I largely agree with Walters' politics.

I didn't find the ending as dissatisfying as some other reviwers. It's pretty clear whodunnit; the question is whether they'll get away with it.

Disordered Minds could have been a good novel. The elements are mostly there, but it needed a stern editor and a few rewrites. Perhaps it was simply rushed to publication before it was ready.

Always a predictable entity, like all such books

This book is "better" than the Omarr books if you prefer boldfaced sum-up words over every day's blurb (such as "dangerous," "challenging," or "breezy."). Another thing this book has that the Omarr's don't are slightly longer daily predictions, and a list of lucky numbers for various days each month. As with all such books there are some editorial errors;Chief among them, a reliance on the same phrases(word-for-word) several time each year.

Not what I was looking for.

Didn't like this book and will see if I can return it. A large portion was explaining the characteristics all of the signs. Not what I expected. Already know that stuff. I was looking for monthly & yearly overviews. This seemed to have the daily views but not what I personally wanted.

An Amazing Western Mystery

Ed Gorman wrote no fewer than 10 western novels for Berkley between 1999 and 2006. The earlier titles tended to be branded with a single word—LAWLESS, VENDETTA, RELENTLESS, LYNCHED—and like all of Mr Gorman’s westerns, each is as much a mystery as a western. I recently read his novel LYNCHED, which was originally published by Berkley in 2003 and recently released as an ebook by Rough Edges Press.

Ben Tully is a quiet working class marshal in a small, unnamed, frontier town. The new century is approaching, and the world is changing. The business of law is moving from the end of a gun to a more scientific approach. Fingerprints are a big deal in the trade magazines (even if the courts don’t approve), as is reading a crime scene for evidence. But the future is far away when Tully finds his town dark and quiet, his office a shambles—the night deputy beaten and unconscious—and a man swaying, dead, at the end of a rope behind the jail.

The town has a secret. Everyone knows who hanged the man, and why. The woman he killed was Marshal Tully’s sweet young wife. The evidence was clear—he was covered with blood, and in his pockets were a few items from Tully’s house. Open and shut, but Tully doesn’t trust the mob verdict, and when the dead man’s sister came to town crying his innocence she found an unlikely ally.

LYNCHED is a melancholy crime novel wrapped and delivered as a western. The prose is lean and smooth; something close to hardboiled, but not quite. It is sharp with working class pain and a palpable angst—

“There was a cold amusement—an arrogance—in the man’s voice that Tully didn’t like. A superiority. Tully wasn’t educated, rich, or fashionable. He wasn’t particularly intelligent, virtuous, or cunning. When people talked down to him, the way this man did, he secretly felt he deserved it.”

It is cast with a litany of scoundrels and saints, and it is often difficult to tell one from the other. There is a wandering con man, cum actor, a self-absorbed, and somewhat delusional, boarding house mother, a beautiful and shy young woman, a saloon and casino keeper, and Tully. And the town, and everyone has their own agenda. The mystery is sharp and plotted with a sure hand. There is more than one red herring, and I didn’t guess the ending until the final pages.

LYNCHED is a winner. It is entertaining, and, in its small and quiet moments, thought provoking.
