Mendeleyev's Dream, by Paul Strathern

What is the world made of? The ancient Greeks speculated about earth, air, fire, and water; today we turn to the periodic table for more reliable information. The story of how we got from there to here is full of fascinating people, and in this elegant, entertaining book, Paul Strathern introduces us to ancient philosophers, medieval alchemists, and the earliest chemists-and to Dimitri Mendeleyev, the card-playing nineteenth-century Russian who claimed that the answers came to him in a dream.

"Chemistry has been a neglected area of science writing, and Mendeleyev, the king of chemistry, is a largely forgotten genius. [This book] goes a long way toward correcting this injustice." (Simon Singh, author of Fermat's Last Theorem, in the Sunday Telegraph)

Vivid writing on an apparently dull subject
By Gaunilon
This book provides a vivid history of chemistry, centered around a literary conceit: Mendeleyev's dream. It is an admirable effort in a field that sees few of any vitality.
The only distressing flaw is the advocacy of Nicolas of Cusa as having exposed the fraudulence of the Donantion of Constantine. Convention has it that it was Lorenzo Valla who did so; Strathern ought to have acknowledged this. Some scholars will insist that it was Valla, however, a history of chemistry is not the place for advocating unusual theories on other subjects.
Otherwise, a great read! Very plucky.

Loses a bit of credibility at the end.
By Jake S.
I thought this was a quite engaging book until I neared the end, and the author's science started to get a little sketchy. His description of why warm Coke is fizzier than cold Coke seems to be wrong, and in the final chapter about Mendeleyev, there are a couple of mistakes, such as confusing bismuth with boron, and a bizarre confusion between uranium and indium, which looks like it needs explaining. All in all a decent book let down by these oversights.

Too elementary
By Charles Miller
If you are looking for a genuine history of chemistry centered on the development of the periodic table--as the title and subtitle imply--then look elsewhere. This book provides a spotty history of science emphasizing the personalities involved, with greatest coverage of ancient and medieval figures. Overall, it was quite disappointing.

Gritty and steamy. -- Booklist

Very suspenseful. -- Literary Times

About the Author

J.D. Robb is the pseudonym for a number one New York Times bestselling author of more than 190 novels, including the futuristic suspense In Death series. There are more than 400 million copies of her books in print.

From AudioFile
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is back, this time to track down a murderer who has escaped from an insane asylum, and whom Eve was responsible for capturing three years earlier. His intended victim list is short and specific; he's targeting all those responsible for his capture, with Eve as the final prize. Susan Ericksen captures the characters nicely, including the Irish-accented Roarke, Eve's husband. She reads with brisk pacing, appropriate emotion, and enough passion to satisfy listeners who are fans of the series. For those new to the Eve Dallas books, it might be better to begin with an earlier work. S.S.R. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A reissue from a collection - worth reading if you missed it!
By Valerie Matteson
The story was first presented in the "Silent Night" anthology and immediately follows the full-size novel "Holiday in Death". We begin with Eve Dallas being called to investigate a body in Times Square of a judge found very early Christmas morning. The body was dumped after the judge had been brutally tortured and slowly hung to death. A note is left with the body but is not really needed as Eve recognizes the work of Dave Palmer who she helped capture and put away 3 years ago. Dave Palmer is a psycho and has left a list of those he intends to kill with Eve at the bottom of the list. It also includes the assistant prosecuting attorney, his defense lawyer and the police's own, Dr. Mira, friend of Eve's. Roarke offers his help and Eve accepts to give her aide, Peabody, more time to recover from an attack (see "Holiday in Death"). As Eve and Roarke and Captain Feeney and others including eventually Peabody follow up clues, interview Palmer's parents and so on, Dave Palmer is anything but idle as he starts going methodically through his list to capture, torture and kill the people he holds responsible for his incarceration. Eve's race against the clock is exciting.

Yes this is a very SHORT story but I found it to be very detailed and well written in spite of the limitations. A good link between regular In Death novels and enjoyable as a stand alone.

a reprint. a cheat. a disappointment
By Maria Campbell
This title was originally printed in the Silent Night anthology and is NOT NOT NOT new material from the author. If you own all the In Death books (like me) or have read all the In Death books, then realize that you've read this before.

If you have these books or have read these books before, it's just a publishing trick to separate you from your money. If you are new to the series, start with the first book.

Not as complete, but a good read.
By Music Ma'am
This book is not your typical J.D. Robb offering. It lacks the usual detail Robb routinely offers while fleshing out her characters, but then, it was only intended as part of an anthology. Since I did not read the story when it was first published, I appreciated having it made available so I could fill in the blanks with information that was referenced in more recent publications. I enjoy all of Robb's characters so much that I feel like I know them personally. "Midnight in Death" is too short to give you that intimate look into the lives of Eve's friends and co-workers, and could disappoint fans who are looking for the regular fare, but it is a good read, nevertheless.

It's totally worth buying!

When you attend Hilary Duff's concert, you may see that many of Hilary Duff's fans are girls. Actually, some fans are guys that are older than her, like me! I brought this book and finished reading it during my one-month trip.

This book has many topics talking about Hilary Duff, Haylie Duff, and her co-stars, which will give you a life story including Hilary's life and career. There may be something that you don't know, if you are not a long-time Hilary Duff fan (2 years or less). For example, I found out that she actually dyes her blonde hair every three weeks.

There are many nice and never-be-seen pictures that catch my attention and keep looking [for a few minutes]!

This book is a must-have for everyone who likes Hilary Duff! Even though you are not a Hilary Duff fan, you should also read this book, at least scan the words and see all pictures! My mom and sister also like this book, when they see all the nice pictures.

Hilary Duff Rocks!
By A Customer
Hilary Duff is awesome! Ths book tells about her daily life, her music, her movies, her family, and more! It also includes plenty of interviews of her. And it also talks about her co-stars and best friends. It has some of her beaty tricks in it to. It also has pictures in it, that you can't see anywhere else, and she looks beautiful in them! I want to put the pics on my wall, but that would ruin the book! It's also a very long book, so I spend hours and hours reading it everyday! In the back it has a 'workography' that tells all of her movies and CD's shes been in, and how much money they earned, and it has some stuff about her upcoming movies to! If you are a Hilary Fan this book is a must!

In the world of mystery writing, Dick Francis stands head and shoulders above the rest. ("Ottawa Citizen")

From the Publisher
Dick Francis, a former jockey, brings his experience of racing and life around the racetrack to his mysteries. (And so far Francis is a three-time winner of the Edgar Award for writing the best mystery of the year.) This horse racing background is appealing to my market area of Southern California. Racing is a popular sport amongst Southlanders.

EPILOGUE

Don’t miss the second charming mystery in the Haunted Bookshop series.

The Ghost . . .

When Jack had been alive . . . the very blood in his veins pulsed to the beat of the city streets (when he’d had blood—and veins, that is).

Why couldn’t he have spent eternity in a place like that?

Instead he got eternity in cornpone alley.

Now the only excitement Jack ever had was scaring the crap out of small-town operators . . .

and Mrs. McClure

Her name was Penelope Thornton-McClure. And he had to admit she showed more moxie than a lot of grown men he’d pranked in the past fifty years.

Certainly, she was the first living entity he’d even considered shifting himself toward since he’d crossed over, which was hilarious because, if he’d read her thoughts right, she didn’t even believe in ghosts.

Well, he hadn’t believed in them either . . .

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents either
are the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously,
and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business
establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

Although real places and institutions are mentioned in this book, they are used in the service of fiction. No character in this book is based on any person, living or dead, and the world presented is completely fictitious.

“You mean there is a hell?” asked Lucy. “Some people might call it so,” said the captain. “There’s a dimension that some spirits have to wait in till they realize and admit the truth about themselves.”

PROLOGUE

My life is my own, and the opinions of others don’t interest me . . .

—Carroll John Daly, “Three Gun Terry,” Black Mask, May 1923 (cited as the first published appearance of a hard-boiled detective)

Quindicott, Rhode Island 1949

Cranberry. What kind of a cornball name was that for a street?

Jack Shepard hauled his powerful frame out of the black Packard and slammed the heavy door, sending a violent shudder through the mass of metal.

Five hours. He’d just spent five dusty hours behind the wheel of this boiler, hunched up like some luckless clipster trying to crack a bag man’s safe.

With easy fingers, Jack buttoned-closed his double-breasted jacket. The suit was gunmetal gray, rising in a V from his narrow waist to his acre of shoulders. Closing his eyes, he imagined a pretty set of hands working over the kinks and knots. Tonight, thought Jack. After the drive back to Manhattan’s crowded dirty noise, he’d find a willing pair in some suds club, like he always did.

Casing the scene, Jack scanned the two- and three-story buildings that lined this lane—a kiddie version of the towering steel and glass where he usually ranged. “Town,” he muttered. That’s what two farmers had called it about ten miles back, out by the cow pasture and old mill, where he’d asked for directions. The “Welcome to Quindicott” sign came next. Farmland after, more of the monotonous rolling green he’d driven through on the way up. Then came the gradual density of houses. Trees and lawns and hedges trimmed by do-right guys. Barking dogs and chubby-cheeked kids. You had your “quaint” town square, your manicured lawn, and your white bandshell with red trim. The whole thing looked so doggone cheery, Jack expected to see a Norman Rockwell signature in the sidewalk.

The “townsfolk” in this homespun little picture looked cheery enough, too, soaking up the last hours of the orange sun’s late-summer juice. Young men in flannel. Old men with clay pipes. Farmers’ wives in gingham, and shop girls with bare legs.

These people were off the cob, all right, Jack thought, starting a casual stroll. Corny as they came. Some rocked on porches, some gabbed on benches, some ambled along the cobblestone lane—and all eyes were on him—

“Who are ya, fella?”

Curious eyes—

“Waddaya want?”

Small-town eyes—

“Ya don’t belong.”

Jack lit a butt from his deck of Luckies, then used a single finger to push back his fedora. You people want a look at my mug? Go on then, look.

Jack’s face wasn’t pretty, but no dame ever complained. His forehead was broad with thick sandy brows; his cheeks were sunken, and his nose like a boxer’s—slightly crooked with a broken-a-few-times bump. His jaw was iron, his chin flat and square—with a one-inch scar in the shape of a dagger slashing across it—and his eyes were sharper than a skiv. Freddie once told him they were the color of granite and just about as hard.

Maybe he was hard, thought Jack. But baby, this was one hick town. No painted dolls or groghounds here. No nickel rats, cheap grifters, or diamond-dripping dames looking to have their husbands set up. Just clean air, families with kids, potluck socials, and farm-fresh moo juice.

A town for settling down. That’s what this place was, thought Jack. A few of those bare-legged, unpainted country dolls passed him, gave him the shy version of the “what’s-your-name-big-fella?” once-over. Nice, thought Jack, eyeballing them right back. Shapely gams. Milky skin. Curves the way he liked them—bountiful. Jack took a long, slow drag from his Lucky and turned away. A man like him had to be careful in a place like this. Say the right thing to the wrong broad and he’d make her about a thousand times more miserable than he was.

With a slight limp, Jack continued his slow stroll—casual, easy, hands in pockets, the ache in his shin an unwanted souvenir from that underpaid job he’d done for Uncle Sam over in Germany. Jack ignored it. Continued to case the scene.

Ahead of him, a row of shops beckoned. Bakery, grocery, dress joint, beauty parlor. There it was: one twenty-two. A little more class than the other places. Probably did business with that fancy Newport set not far away. Wide plate-glass window. Words etched in: We Buy and Sell Books.

Yeah. But did they have the book he was looking for? The one they were looking for? The one they killed Freddie for?

The sun was sinking like a popped balloon now. The day was done, the lights nearly out, and just around the corner, a shadow stained the sidewalk, a city-suited figure, waiting.

Jack cursed low. Thought he’d shaken that tail.

He turned the brass handle, pushed. The shop’s bell tinkled like a bad girl’s giggle. A chill up his spine like a foot on his grave.

The shadow moved closer.

Jack’s hand rose, dipped into his suitcoat, caressed his rod’s handle, smooth from wear. He got a bad feeling, but Jack had gotten them before. And when he started a thing, he never turned back.

Besides, this job was for Freddie, and Jack promised his dead friend he’d ride this train out. All the way to the end of the line.

I stake my everlasting life on it.

When the shadow receded, Jack refocused his attention on the job at hand. Investigation and interrogation were things he’d polished as a private eye, but he’d learned as a cop—back before he’d joined up. In the service, he’d learned a lot more: About men and the things they’d do and say under pressure. About the enemy: how and why they’d lie, and, more importantly, what methods would pry the truth out of them.

The moment of truth came today.

For Jack it came sharp and hard and quick, landing at the back of his skull. But the blow didn’t kill him. The gunshots did. To the head, to the face, to the heart. Enough to make sure Jack Shepard’s everlasting promise to his friend began today . . . along with his everlasting life.

CHAPTER 1

The Big Ending

Murder doesn’t round out anybody’s life, except the murdered and sometimes the murderer’s.

—Nick Charles to Nora Charles in The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett, 1933

Quindicott, Rhode Island Today

“We killed him!”

I was beside myself. In a frantic state of hand-wringing and head-shaking, I paced the length of the bookshop’s aisle from Christie to Grafton and back again.

“Calm down, dear,” said my aunt, her slight frame tipping the Shaker rocker back and forth with about as much anxiety as a retiree on a Palm Beach sundeck.

“How can I calm down?” I asked. “We killed a best-selling author on the first night of his book tour!”

“Well, the milk’s gone and spilled now. No use crying over it. If you need help calming down, why don’t you have a belt?”

I was not surprised by this rather unladylike suggestion from my aunt. Sadie may have been seventy-two, and barely four feet eleven, but for an aging bantamweight she had a big mouth and a good right hook. The Quindicott Business Owners’ Association never forgot the day she’d spotted a shoplifter at ten yards (putting a Hammett first edition down his pants). She’d taken him out with one sharp Patricia Cornwell to the head.

Potential is there
By Holly
I absolutely love Cleo Coyle's Coffeehouse Mystery series. When I realized this was written by the same team, I was immediately interested since the coffeehouse mysteries can't be published fast enough to keep me happy. I was prepared to love it and be just as enthused about this book as the others.

What I ended up reading was a very light, very fluffy book without much substance. All the elements where there for something I would enjoy: set in a bookstore in a quaint Rhode Island town, lots of townsfolks to add color, a woman who has made a major life change by moving from New York and all the upheaval that goes with that and a ghost that inhabits the bookshop to keep the pot stirred. The mystery and the motive behind it are actually strengths of the book. While enjoyable, the story did not live up to my expectations. My reaction when I finished it was a feeling of disappointment and wondering if that's all there was. The potential is here for the future and I will definintely read the next in the series since I am optimistic that it will be better (again, the Coffeehouse Mysteries are outstanding). There wasn't anything really bad in this book, but the strong sense of place found in most cozies wasn't there and the characters were fairly two-dimensional. Both complaints that can be easily addressed in the next installment.

Not a terrible book, but not satisfying either -- I'll keep my fingers crossed as I plunge into the next one!

Another solid cozy mystery from Berkley
By Queen's Jester
I'm not as fond of the heroine of the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries as I am bookstore owner Tricia Miles of the Booktown Mystery series (also from Berkley).

Having said that, I must say that author Alice Kimberly crafts a compelling mystery. And while I may not yet fully appreciate the heroine of this work, I strongly suspect that I will come to appreciate her character more as I continue to read other books in this series.

I enjoy the ghost, Jack Shepard. I quickly tired of the overuse of the words "doll" and "gam" in his vocabulary. I can only hope that the more time Jack spends with Penelope, the less need for the gangster-style words.

I have to agree with other reviewers who note that there are a number of paragraphs of information that do little more than create a condescending tone. I find it almost comical when authors / editors try to disquise this tone by delivering the information as dialogue. What I question is why editors don't see past this disquise and put a stop to it.

I rarely appreciate an Epilogue, however, the one included in this work is so well crafted the majority of it reads like a prose poem.

I recommend this series to any mystery lover who enjoys a well-crafted quick read.

Bookshop haunting
By S. Feicht
What a fun read! Widow Penelope McClure co-owns a bookshop in Rhode Island with her elderly Aunt. Over fifty years ago a hard-boiled detective, Jack Shepard was murdered in the bookshop and has been haunting the premises ever since. When Timothy Brennen, author of the Jack Shield mysteries based on our resident ghost, dies in the midst of his talk, Pen is one of the murder suspects.

Pen must cope with a ghost who speaks only to her, her husband's suicide, wealthy in-laws who want her seven-year-old son, and a business that is teetering on financial disaster. The plot is tight, supporting characters wacky, and the literary mentions make this a satfisfying read. If you are a fan of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, try this one. And in December the second in The Haunted Bookshop Mysteries will be published.

Amazon.com Review
Twenty-nine year old Alexander Kinloch is an unusual chap. With a fervor for the bagpipes and a talent for painting "the passions of golf ... the conflict within the self," he's not what you'd expect as the fourth son of a Scottish earl. When his ailing stepfather seeks Alexander's help in reviving his bankrupt brewery, Alexander begrudgingly leaves his secluded highland cabin and enters a "race" to save his family's honor. The King Alfred Gold Cup, a two mile steeplechase that exemplifies the pride of the brewery, is his challenge, and his assignment is to secure the cup trophy, a valuable medieval chalice. As he emerges from his life as a near recluse, Alexander begins to understand the benefits and the costs of becoming a hero.

From Publishers Weekly
The "hilt" of Francis's delightful 35th thriller refers to the jewel-encrusted, solid gold handle of the ceremonial sword of Scotland's would-be king, Bonnie Prince Charlie. A descendant of the Scottish earl to whom the prince gave the hilt, narrator Alexander Kinloch lives in an unelectrified bothy in the Scottish mountains, supporting himself through his paintings. Al's keen visual sense allows him to draw the faces of the four thugs who beat him and tear apart his home in the opening chapter. "Where is it?" they demand, establishing the leitmotif of concealed objects that Francis weaves through the plot. Hard on the beating, Al must rush to London to comfort his mother in the aftermath of her husband's heart attack. Al learns that his stepfather's brewery is about to collapse because the finance director has absconded with millions of pounds. In desperation, the business affairs of the brewery are turned over to Al, though he pines for solitude, his easel and the mountains. A Francis novel wouldn't be complete without thoroughbred racing; in fact, Al's estranged wife is a race trainer, and one of the many things Al has to hide is Golden Malt, his stepfather's steeplechaser, slated to run in the King Alfred Gold Cup?unless Al's spiteful stepsister can steal the horse first. The diverse plot threads tie up neatly, but not before Al achieves an understated emotional breakthrough with his wife and with his undemonstrative mother, endures gruesome torture with hardly a murmur and wins his stepsister's trust. Likable characters abound: a PI who's a master of disguise; the earl, "Himself," who trusts Al to hide the ancestral hilt; a solvency practioner whose flowered dresses and soft hair help persuade bankers to give the brewery a second chance. Earlier this year, the Mystery Writers of America honored Francis as a Grand Master; this novel again shows why. BOMC featured alternate; author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA. Alexander, a reclusive young painter living in the Scottish Highlands, returns to London to oversee his stepfather's business when the older man has a heart attack. Both the chief financial officer and the firm's money have disappeared. Many twists occur before the conclusion of the story. Many teens will identify with Al as he doesn't quite fit in with the rest of his elite family. They will laugh at his assistant, a delightful private eye whose personality and unique methods of operation are efficient and entertaining. The plot moves quickly and there is abundant white space per page. Explanations of Scottish history are provided within the narrative. Although horses and a race are involved, their role is not as important as in other novels by this author.?Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

One of my favorite Dick Francis novels
By Bookwyrm
I love Dick Francis, and this is one of my favorites. Before he started writing with his son (sorry but things went downhill at that point, Francis wrote numerous top-notch mysteries that wove together human nature, mystery, horses, and a subject, whether history, banking, cameras, wine, weather, etc. This mystery follows Alexander Kinloch, a solitary artist, from his bothy in the Highlands to London, where he sorts out his ailing stepfather's brewery and racehorses. But hidden behind everything is the deeper mystery - the Hilt. Alexander deals with bullying step-sisters and sadistic hit men following the orders of someone who's closer than he thinks.

One thing I love about Dick Francis, in addition to his excellent, nuanced writing and multiple meaning titles, is how he starts his books with a few lines that just suck you in. To the hilt is no different: "I don't think my stepfather much minded dying. That he almost took me with him wasn't really his fault." Then, in true Francis style, the mystery just gets deeper and the story whips faster, all the while showing us glimpses of human strengths and frailties and courage under fire, and the brilliance of the author who wove the tapestry they inhabit.

One of His best
By Customer
Dick Francis was a gifted writer and To the Hilt proves it. This is one of his best even though most of the action takes place off the racecourse. The main character, Alex, is not a jockey, but an artist and connected to an artstocratic family through his father. The "hilt" refers to a priceless family heirloom and the efforts to keep it safe from thieves and the Scottish Trust. Alex is also trying to save his step-father's brewery company from bankruptcy. Alex's strong, quiet moral code is featured in all the Dick Francis main characters and a highlight in each. I recommend any of the early Dick Francis books. Those written with his son, Felix, lack the nuances and wit found in the early books.

I loved all of Dick Francis's books. New ones written by others are not quite as good. Wish you had more of the old books. Was looking for "Dead Cert" but couldn't find it.

He aplicado sus enseñanzas y he conseguido resultados extraordinarios en mi vida. Jairo Orozco, motivador, escritor y conferencista venezolano. Miami, Florida.
