From Publishers Weekly
Martin's second playful romance set in the world of professional hockey (following Body Check) scores again. After nearly being raped by a sports star, Theresa Falconetti doesn't date athletes-or, in truth, anyone at all. So when two suitors begin courting her, she's flummoxed rather than flattered. Smooth, sexually undemanding Reese Banister seems like a dream come true even though he's the nephew of the man determined to take over her financially shaky PR firm. In contrast, new client Michael Dante, whose family owns a popular Brooklyn restaurant, is her worst nightmare. He's a professional hockey player, he comes from the same Bensonhurst neighborhood as her lovable but irritating Italian family and he's always in her face. As Theresa tries to upgrade the image of Michael's restaurant, decide whether or not to sell out, deal with her father's cancer and cope with the lingering scars of sexual trauma, she must assess the men's true worth. The takeover plot line is sketchy, and Reese's courtship is so transparently shady no reader will be fooled. However, Martin depicts the worlds of both professional hockey and ethnic Brooklyn with deftness and smart detail. She has an unerring eye for humorous family dynamics, and her treatment of Theresa's psychological trauma, while accurate, never overwhelms the story's sweet buoyancy.

From Booklist
Michael Dante is a veteran professional hockey player who knows that his playing days are numbered, so, also co-owner of his family's restaurant, he decides to take that to the next level. This involves hiring a PR firm whose co-owner is the lovely Theresa Falconetti whom he's had his eye on since meeting her at his coach's wedding two years ago. He can't get her out of his mind and has high hopes. Theresa, though, has changed due to a traumatic event, and has sworn off players of all sports, especially hockey. In addition, she has made every effort to squelch her Italian American roots and has no desire to date Italian men. Her edicts knock Michael's plans right out of the box. Can Michael bring Theresa around? Witnessing their "courtship" is a pleasure in Martin's fun and witty story. But there's so much more. The depth of the characterizations and the unexpectedly moving passages make this an exceptional romance and a must-read for all fans of the genre. Maria Hatton

More than fair
By Sarah W
Fair Play is the wonderful follow up to Deirdre Martin's first book, Body Check. This book also has a hockey theme, but it goes way beyond the normal athlete romance novel.
Heroine Theresa Falconetti doesn't date Italians or athletes. Michael Dante, the winger for the New York Blades, the fictional hockey team, knew from the moment of meeting Theresa that she was THE ONE. But she has some baggage that makes it hard for her to trust any man, let alone another hockey player.
Theresa was nearly raped by a hockey player from the Blades and she has retreated from being a fun loving, romantic and silly woman to a woman who is serious all the time. She is trying to get her PR firm off the ground and finally agrees to take a job promoting Michael's restaurant. Theresa quickly comes to discover that she can rely on Michael, and she also finds that is extremely attracted to him, false front teeth and all. Unfortunately, Michael has competition in businessman Reese Banister, a jerk of the worse kind.
Martin's follow up to Body Check is filled with Italian zest, fun family camaderie, and a great romance between Theresa and Michael who is a great hero, both tender, macho, and sexy. He wants Theresa and is willing to go to any lengths to get her, but when the going gets tough, it's Theresa who turns to Michael. Theresa has a lot to overcome to trust Michael, but right from the beginning her strong personality, individual style, and amazing strength come through. If this book is any indication, Deirdre Martin definitely has the talent to take her writing career to the top.

I've Found a New Favorite Author

I first read Body Check by Deirdre Martin and loved it! It is the first in this "series" so I recommend reading that book first. It introduces the reader to the characters in this book.

Teresa Falconetti is an Italian girl from Brooklyn that just wants to be a big city girl with a big city life. She wants to be "better" than her Brooklyn roots and fall in love with a cultured, sophisticated guy...even if the perfect Italian from the same neighborhood is what she should have. Teresa has to struggle with her feelings for the "wrong" guy and find Mr. Right by dating a stuck-up rich guy.

As you read the story you know she's making a mistake and you want to slap her into seeing what is right in front of her face. It's so frustrating, yet you know that with each turning page something good is going to happen. It's a really good story with a great ending. I recommend this book to anyone needing a good love story with some wit, humor, and a little bit of sports mixed in.

Illumination Night, by Alice Hoffman

Beginning on the night of the Grand Illumination, a festival of lanterns held each summer on Martha’s Vineyard, this novel is a modern chronicle of a marriage and a bittersweet exploration of an extraordinary passion. Illumination Night follows the lives of a young blond giant who is as beautiful as he is frightening; an old woman at the end of her life whose last mission is to save her granddaughter’s soul; a family torn apart by a wife’s fears and a husband’s unrealized desires—and the high school girl who comes to Martha’s Vineyard against her will, who steals husbands and cars, and who will bring everyone together in a web of yearning, sin, and ultimate redemption. Both riveting and reflective, this is a story of “parenthood and friendship, self-protection and generosity, dream and disillusionment” (Newsday) that brings to light the talent that has made Alice Hoffman an acclaimed bestselling author.

From Publishers Weekly
With an eye for household details and respect for daily events, Hoffman (Fortune's Daughter unleashes the mythic forcefulness of ordinary life in this polished story of love and loneliness set on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Simon is in his fourth year and small even for his age when he sees white-robed Elizabeth Renny, a neighbor in her 75th, tumble out her attic window "like a cloud." In her convalescence, Elizabeth is cared for by her rebellious teen-aged granddaughter Jody, sent from off-island. Jody sets her sights on Simon's father, Andre, who restores antique motorcycles, raising doubts and fears in Vonny, Simon's mother, Andre's wife. Elizabeth recovers; Jody pines and plots for the taciturn Andre; Simon doesn't grow; and Vonny's anxieties bloom into full-fledged agoraphobia. Seasons advance. Jody learns the limits of her desires and meets a freakishly tall eggman; a child dies, another grows; Elizabeth decides she'd rather live than die; and Vonny faces her fears. Illumination Night, an annual celebration on Martha's Vineyard when Victorian houses surrounding a park and bandstand are lit with hundreds of magical Japanese lanterns, provides apt title and image for this shimmering, radiant tale.

From the Publisher
Illumination Night is the first book I ever read by Alice Hoffman. Was I in for a surprise! It is a lovely, uniquely imaginative story of an elderly woman, a young couple and boy giant on Martha's Vineyard. Illumination Night refers to a 4th of July tradition on the island. Hoffman's characters are so vulnerable, and believable, and memorable that I immediately went and found all of Hoffman's books. There is always a magical element in all of Hoffman's books that prompts us to look at life and people in a whole new way.

Not really "illuminating"
By abi
I love Alice Hoffman's style of writing and her development of characters. Andre, Vonnie, Simon, Elizabeth, Eddy and Jody are all fascinating and I couldn't wait to read more about them. However, as the story went on and I was getting near the end, I realized that there was going to be no real conclusion, no tying up of loose ends, no satisfying "aha!" moments (except for Elizabeth)...and I assume that is Ms Hoffman's intention, but I was left with a very dissatisfied feeling. I'm sure there are all kinds of deep meanings to be deduced from the story (or perhaps not!). When I read a novel for relaxation I prefer a beginning, a middle and an end, and this book left too many ends hanging loose for my taste.

Perfect!..
By Margot Berard
I love Alice Hoffman stories, and this one is no exception! Her characters come to life as the story unfolds. What I really enjoy is that I can not guess what is going to happen, though I may try. She has a "dry" way of telling her tale, which some folks may get bored with.. please keep at it, we'll worth your time!

Intriguing
By diane strausser
I'm glad I read this book despite the presence of too many undeveloped themes. The characters were interesting as were the situations...but I found too many threads that did not get tied up.

The Quinn Legacy (Chesapeake Bay Saga), by Nora Roberts

For the first time, the final two novels of Nora Roberts's breathtaking Chesapeake Bay saga are together in one volume, bringing "a welcome crescendo to the story-symphony that is the family Quinn in all its boisterous, loving resonance" (BookPage).

Includes the novels

Inner Harbor

Phillip Quinn has done everything to make his life seem perfect. With his career on the fast track and a condo overlooking the Inner Harbor, his life on the street is firmly in the past. But one look at Seth and he's reminded of the boy he once was.

Chesapeake Blue

Now a grown man returning from Europe as a successful painter, Seth Quinn is settling down on Maryland's Eastern Shore, surrounded once again by Cam, Ethan, and Phil, their wives and children, all the blessed chaos of the extended Quinn clan. Finally, he's back in the little blue-and-white house where there's always a boat at the dock, a rocker on the porch, and a dog in the yard. Still, a lot has changed in St. Christopher since he's been gone-and the most intriguing change of all is the presence of Dru Whitcomb Banks.

A Family Affair
By Terry A. Benedict-Devine
I read the second installment on the new printouts that Nora has published (4 Quinn novels - 2 in each book) and I have to say Phillip and Seth's story were every bit as good, if not better, than the first half - The Quinn Brothers - Cameron and Ethan. The first novel, "Inner Harbor" takes us through the continuing saga of three lost boys taken in by Ray and Stella Quinn. This is Phillip's story and it centers around Sybill Griffin (Seth's aunt) however, no one knows that on the onset. Sybill has come to St. Chris to check on her sister's (Gloria De Lauter) son, Seth and see if he is being properly taken care of (according to Gloria, he's been kidnapped by the Quinns)! Gloria has a long history of storytelling and Sybill decides it is in the boy's best interest to see for herself. Through it all, she meets up with the Quinns and starts to develop a relationship w/Phillip. Once Phillip finds out who she is, he is annoyed, to say the least, and determined to sever all ties, however, he is drawn to this lady and her to him and that is where the romance comes in along with the struggle to hold onto Seth. Gloria is determined to make trouble for the Quinns and the question is, how long will it take Sybill to come to terms with the fact that her sister is truly a woman with very serious problems, both mentally and physically. The second novel in the book, "Chesapeake Blue," tells Seth's story. The story begins 18 years later with Seth just coming back to St. Chris from Italy, a world-renowned artist. Seth meets the new girl in town, Druscilla (Dru) Whitcomb Banks, the product of a very well-to-do family, escaping her own prior life for the peace and quiet of a coastal small town and a chance to make it on her own with her flower shop. The romance is centered on Dru and Seth now but the conflict still lies with the unresolved matter of Seth's mother, Gloria who is determined, at any cost, to squeeze every penny out of the Quinns and her son to "get her fair share." "The Quinn Legacy" is a wonderful culmination to the story of the 4 brothers, Cam, Ethan, Phillip and Seth and the development of their families. The description of St. Christopher and the local shops and people is an added treat.

3 stars and 2.5 stars for books 3 and 4 in the Chesapeake Bay series. Enjoyable teasing and conversations among family members.
By Jane
THE SERIES:
The Chesapeake Bay series includes four books which tell a continuing story about a family. Ray and Stella Quinn adopt three troubled boys who came from abusive homes. In the first three books the boys are about 30 years old. They left home, have good jobs and are single. Stella died several years earlier. In the beginning of the first book Ray took in another boy, 10-year-old Seth, who was abused by his mother Gloria. Gloria offered to give legal guardianship to Ray in return for a large sum of money. Before anything was official, Ray died in a car accident. Shortly before he died, he asked his three sons to move back home to take care of Seth. All three men promised they would. They decide to start a boat building business. In the first three books each of the three men meets and falls in love with a woman. The fourth book tells the story of Seth, who is grown, returns home and falls in love. The best parts of the first three books are watching the developing relationships among Seth and the three men and seeing Seth blossom. Each book has a minor amount of fantasy due to some conversations with a ghost. The four books, main characters, and my ratings are:
Sea Swept (Cameron and Anna) 4 stars
Rising Tides (Ethan and Grace) 3 stars
Inner Harbor (Phillip and Sybill) 3 stars
Chesapeake Blue (Seth and Dru) 2.5 stars

3 stars for INNER HARBOR (Book 3).

Story Brief:
Phillip's mother was a stripper and prostitute. Phillip survived by stealing, using drugs and sometimes selling himself. At age 13, he was shot in gang crossfire and nearly died. Ray and Stella discovered him in the hospital and took him home. Due to their love and environment, he changed and thrived. He is now a successful advertising executive in Baltimore. He dresses well, drinks fine wines and eats healthy. During his three-day weekends, he handles administrative details, legal issues and paperwork for the brothers' boat building business, as well as some of the sweaty carpentry work.

Dr. Sybill Griffin has made a career out of the study of urban life and has published two books. She has degrees in anthropology, sociology and psychology. She comes to Chesapeake Bay to observe and study small town life for her next book. However, the reader soon learns that she chose Chesapeake Bay because of Seth. She purposely meets the brothers and finds that Phillip is attracted to her. She begins a relationship with him in order to be closer to and learn about Seth. Gloria (Seth's mother) returns to the area. Gloria has a bigger role in this book than in the previous two books.

Reviewer's Opinion:
This was ok, but I couldn't get into the characters. They were good as supporting characters in the Seth story and for the series, but the story about their relationship wasn't as good as I'd hoped. They each were wounded in the past in different ways. Now they are smooth and polished. I didn't see how they grew to love each other. They were sort of thrown together, and then they have sex because they are physically attracted to each other. The value of this book is learning about Gloria and seeing some of her actions. It finishes some of the unresolved issues from the first two books. So it's worthwhile in that way.

Data:
Story length: 238 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: 3. Total number of sex scene pages: 7. Setting: current day Chesapeake Bay area and Baltimore, Maryland. Copyright: 1999. Genre: contemporary romance with fantasy.

2.5 stars for CHESAPEAKE BLUE (Book 4).

Story Brief with Mild Spoilers:
Seth is now about 28. Gloria began contacting him when he was a teen, threatening to hurt his family. He secretly has been paying her money to stay away. He spent several years in Europe to get away from her. But when he became a famous painter, she followed him to Europe. Since he couldn't avoid her and since he missed his family, he moves back to Chesapeake Bay.

Dru is the only child of a wealthy family in Washington D.C. Her fiancé cheated on her, and she moved to Chesapeake Bay to open a flower shop. She bought a house and loves living alone, with no domestic help. She likes the small town environment. Seth sees her and immediately falls for her. He wants to paint her. She is reluctant. He rents the space above her flower shop for his art studio.

Reviewer's Opinion:
The primary weakness was the two main characters were not interesting enough. There was not enough relationship development. I also felt it was too quick for Seth to ask her to marry him. The best parts of the book were the camaraderie, teasing, and conversations among the Quinn family members. That was entertaining and well done.

The major conflict in this story was regarding Gloria, Seth's horrible mother. The Gloria problem was resolved in Book 3. So I was unhappy to see that the author had to weaken Seth's character in order to reactivate Gloria's bad guy role. I did not enjoy seeing Seth wimp out and pay her blackmail money over fourteen years without telling his family. They stood up to her and scared her off before. They would have done it again. I wasn't happy with this plot. I enjoyed the first book the most.

Data:
Story length: 240 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: 3. Total number of sex scene pages: 7. Setting: current day Chesapeake Bay area and Washington D.C.. Copyright: 2002. Genre: contemporary romance with fantasy.

another wonderfully satisfying installment
By tregatt
Once again Anne Gracie delivers! This third installment, "The Perfect Stranger," in the Merridew sisters series was a deeply satisfying read, proving to be as absorbing and as compelling as the other two books in the series ("The Perfect Rake" & "The Perfect Waltz"). However, readers used to swifter paced and more complex fare should be forewarned: while "The Perfect Stranger" truly was a wonderful read, and while the storyline was refreshingly different from the other two books in the series, the plot for "The Perfect Stranger" was rather straightforward one, with few frills and fancies.

Faith Merridew thought that she had found her soul-mate and love of her life when she met talented violinist, Felix Vladimir Rimavska and so eloped with the man to France in spite of her very proper upbringing. Unfortunately for Faith. she discovers too late that Felix had played her false, as he was already married and had actually courted and run off with her in order to win a bet. Her pride and good name in tatters, Faith leaves the cad and tries to return to England and her family. But it is a rather dangerous thing for a young, beautiful woman to travel alone with no escort and little money, and Faith soon finds herself destitute and in very dire straits indeed. And that's when Faith's luck suddenly changes for the better. Rescued from a gang of louts by Nicholas Blacklock (a veteran of the Peninsula Wars), Nicholas offers to rescue Faith's reputation by marrying her. Nicholas assures Faith that it will be a marriage of convenience, and has plans to send her back to England to live with his mother. But Faith has no intention of going quietly back to England. She senses that Nicholas is on a grave mission, and she's determined to prove her worth to him by sticking it out at his side. And already halfway in love with him, she's determined to win his love and approval as well....

There is much to recommend about "The Perfect Stranger" -- like how the author allows for Faith's self assurance to grow with each succeeding chapter, and how she showcases the love blossoms between the Faith and Nicholas (even though Nicholas refuses to admit his feelings for his wife for much of the book). In "The Perfect Stranger," Annie Gracie has written a novel about how two emotionally scarred people find each other and so discover a love they had quite given up on ever finding. And this makes for some rather poignant and satisfying reading. However, while the book could be characterised as an "adventure" romance novel, not very much happens adventure-wise -- there are no spies or murderers, etc for Nicholas to hunt or the group to run away from, nor are Nicholas and his friends on a revenge mission either. So that in spite of its on-the-road motif, "The Perfect Stranger" is essentially a quiet romance novel about the blossoming love. All in all, "The Perfect Stranger" was a very satisfying, romantic and moving love story, well worth the cover price, and its 5 star rating.

Hmmmmm - not as good as the first 2 stories in the series
By Susan Smith
I'm not sure what to write about The Perfect Stranger and am a little at a loss about how to give it a fair star rating. I've decided on 3 stars, having initially given it 2. This is a road, cabin and "big secret" story. These are three things that almost inevitably annoy me in romantic fiction - admittedly a matter of personal taste. And, I have to say I thought Anne Gracie was running out of steam in this, the third instalment of stories about the Merridew sisters. Frankly, the fact that Faith Merridew had eloped and had a bigamous marriage and then was wandering alone on the beaches of northern France was a little to far-fetched for me - particularly as the previous books were not so unrealistic.

However, finally (for the first half of the book annoyed me - I nearly put it aside unfinished) the second half of the story started to pick up pace with the introduction of a gypsy (or perhaps Basque) character and her mysterious grandmother. At first I got even more annoyed because the story took on some rather fey and "magical" elements - something else that usually is a turn-off for me.

It was the last couple of chapters that lifted this book from 2 to 3 stars. The credulous but extremely emotional solution to the hero's problems (at last revealed) were movingly portrayed and even brought a tear to my eye.

I hope that if Anne Gracie is continuing the Merridew saga that she gets re-energised; otherwise, I think it is best left alone and she moves on to something else. As always, she writes extremely well but I did not think this story was up to the standards of the first two in the series.

A Great Romance that keeps you turning the pages!!
By BB
I've been waiting for this third installment of the Merridew sister's saga and it did not disappoint. It's nice to have read the two previous books but it stands alone very well.We meet Faith Merridew on a French beach. She's being persued by a scruffy mini mob of lustful pigs thinking she's a skittish prostitute. She runs right into the arms of our hero Nicholas Blacklock, a waterloo veteran who's suffering mental and physical remnants of war. He protects her and introduces her to his companions. A rough Scot and his faithful retainer. They're on a mysterious journey back to the battlefields where all was lost.

This is essentially a marriage of convience/ road romance with a fresh twist. I appreciated that we were spared all the usual London Season hoop-la. Interesting secondary characters and great sexual tension makes this an outstanding read.

A Low Country Pleasure
By A Customer
Hello-she's baaaaaaaack- that low country lovin, livin, writin, Dorothea Benton Frank.
As with her previous 2 releases, ISLE OF PALMS, is also set in the author's beloved birthplace region and is a tribute to everything from it's salty marshes to it's eccentric inhabitants.
IOP is the author's best book yet.Frank provides equal parts drama, southern heritage and razor sharp one liners(reminiscent of Jersey girl, Evanovich).
The character of Anna Lutz Abbot is richly layered and supported by an ensemble cast that is flawed, but, loving and loyal.Anna's narrative is truly southern as well as sassy!
After reading all 3 of Frank's books, I have added a much needed, soul feeding, low country visit to my 'things to do before I die list.'
The 2 days spent reading this book was a long over due treat and well worth the wait since PLANTATION. My only regret is I didn't have my feet and backside firmly planted in the sandy beaches of South Carolina while reading it!

One of the worst books I've ever read.
By Paula Jane
The characters are underdeveloped and steriotypical. The plot is thin and improbable. The dialogue is weak. There are logical inconsistancies. The author tells us nothing about the Isle of Palms to explain the attraction the main character has for the island. The writer changes voices from the protagonist randomly and to no purpose. I wouldn't have finished the book had it not been the selection for book club this month. I haven't read anything this bad since the fiction section in Cosmopolitan decades ago. Don't waste your time on this trash.

Dippy formulaic romance
By Amazon Customer
This book started out great - I was laughing out loud in some parts. But about a third of the way through it, it quickly disintegrated into a 3rd rate romance. The characters went from being alive to being flat and uninteresting, the writing became - for lack of a better word - lame, and I thought I'd been dropped into the midst of a middle schoolers fantasy. I trudged along, hoping things would improve but they never did.......I seriously could not finish it. The book seems to have been written by 2 completely different people!!!! Don't waste your money.

Shades of Black: Crime and Mystery Stories by African-American AuthorsFrom Berkley Hardcover

A dazzling collection of crime and mystery stories, Shades of Black is a landmark achievement. Bringing together today's brightest talent from the field-from Walter Mosley, "one of America's best mystery writers" (New York Times), to the late Hugh Holton, whose "gift for retaining suspense is golden" (Chicago Sun-Times)-it is the first anthology of African-American mystery writers. Shades of Black is not only a tribute to the art of storytelling-it's a fascinating foray into the rich and widely varied African-American experience.

Includes stories by:

Frankie Y. Bailey • Jacqueline Turner Banks • Chris Benson • Eleanor Taylor Bland and Anthony Bland • Patricia E. Canterbury • Christopher Chambers • Tracy Clark • Evelyn Coleman • Grace F. From Publishers Weekly
Talking about African-American mystery writers, editor Bland says, "In my opinion, the most significant contribution we have made, collectively, to mystery fiction is the development of the extended family; the permanence of spouses and significant others, most of whom don't die in the first three chapters or by the end of the novel; children who are complex, wanted, and loved; and even pets." And while some of the 22 stories in this excellent anthology are as hard as nails and as noir as a night in Thompsonville (such as Gary Phillips's "Beginner's Luck," which stars Chainey, his no-nonsense former Las Vegas stripper, and Walter Mosley's short, pungent "Bombardier"), most of them do have a strong sense of family. Bland's own "Murder on the Southwest Chief," written with her 15-year-old son, Anthony, has her suburban Chicago cop Marti MacAlister using her sons' journals to solve a crime. Frankie Y. Bailey's "Since You Went Away" is another corking railroad yarn, featuring Lizzie Stuart's grandfather, a Pullman porter, in a tale of jealousy and sexual repression in 1946. The feeling of extended family includes a tribute to the late Hugh Holton, a Chicago police captain and prolific mystery writer, by historian Lerone Bennett Jr., even though Holton's own entry, "The Werewolf File," is a dark and rather bloody tale. Some of the other contributors' names may be new to casual mystery readers, but part of the pleasure of this wide-ranging volume is welcoming them to the family.

From Booklist
For a collection touted as "the first anthology of African-American mystery writers," one would have hoped for tougher editorial oversight. It's mystifying why Bland (who includes a decidedly bland Marti MacAlister mystery written with her 15-year-old son) would feature the elliptical Walter Mosley story "Bombardier," for instance, rather than any number of more noteworthy Mosley efforts. Readers also might be puzzled to find what appears to be an open-ended snippet of a novel--with no further explanation--from the talented Grace F. Edwards as well as a few stories clearly not ready for print. Thankfully, there's enough top-notch stuff here to recommend this groundbreaking collection anyway. Gems include Chris Benson's "Double Dealing," a crackling tale of an undercover reporter's investigation into the inner-city drug trade; a grisly supernatural mystery from the late Hugh Holton; Tracy P. Clark's whimsically fun PI character study, "For Services Rendered"; and a compelling tale of murder at a women's shelter by Dicey Scroggins Jackson. Frank Sennett

Entertaining
By A Customer
This delightful twenty-two short story collection is written by African-Americans though some of the writers are not household names yet. The stories are all solid with no losers, but only a handful attain the great label such as Walter Mosley's thought provoking take on the use of the race card. In fact the better known authors like Mr. Mosley, the late Hugh Holton, Frankie Y Bailey, and Gar Anthony Haywood provide the best tales. Much of the remaining stories are well written, but seems a bit formulaic yet fans will enjoy the contributions while getting a glimpse of the future. Look forward to see how far African-Americans have come (especially this group of authors) in a decade when one compares editor Eleanor Taylor Bland today to what she was writing ten years ago. It is interesting to see who was writing then and how many more have joined the rapidly growing community. SHADES OF BLACK: CRIMES AND MYSTERIES STORIES BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN WRITERS contains reliable tales that entertain the audience.

A Mystery Lover's Dream
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Are you bored, with nothing on your bookshelf that will stimulate your mind and activate your imagination? If the answer is yes, then SHADES OF BLACK could be the book for you. This anthology features over 20 stories by various African-American writers of the Mystery genre.

I am an avid reader and mystery is one of my favorite genres so I'm always on the lookout for something to get my mysterious juices flowing and SHADES OF BLACK did this for me. Usually when someone speaks of a good suspenseful novel, Walter Mosley and maybe two or three other authors immediately come to mind. With this anthology, I was exposed to a wealth of African-American mystery writers who are prominent in the literary scene today. My favorite contribution to this collection was "The Werewolf File" by Hugh Holton. This story involved a murderous and vengeful werewolf and three very colorful detectives. The attention to detail and the author's writing was so vivid I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

SHADES OF BLACK is a great example of the talented mystery writers who are on the literary scene today and their works are a welcomed change from predictable stories with very little mental challenge. This anthology has me anxious to check out the works of the authors who were not familiar to me.

Like a literary Jackie Robinson!
By Jennifer H
It is about time an anthology of black writers came out. It has been shameful these authors have lived in the shadows of mainstream mystery and suspense authors, be the white authors "huge names" or amateurs (like me!) writing Cozies. My father used read Himes in the 1950s, but I did not know this until my mother and I obtained this anthology. Himes was a contemporary of Chandler and Hammett, and just as good! Kudos to women Bland, Woods, Edwards. I am always impressed with gum-shoe writer Phillips' work, and Mosely is stellar as always. Notable also was thrill/suspense man Chambers, who was shocking yet very, very interesting. Frankly, nobody in this bundle of stores disappoints me, and avid readers should note that these stories aren't about "ghettoes" or rap music or sex. They are about great mystery writing, and I think we're all enriched by them.

From Publishers Weekly
In Bretton's fine follow-up to Shore Lights, firefighter and bar owner Aidan O'Malley and radio-show host Maddy (DiFalco) Bainbridge prepare for their upcoming nuptials in Paradise Point, N.J. Their pre-wedding jitters are magnified when PBS films a documentary on Jersey Shore towns and focuses on the O'Malley and DiFalco families, who settled Paradise Point and are now being joined in marriage. Maddy and Aidan are salt-of-the-earth characters, grounded in the realism of past disappointments and tragedy. Aidan raised his teenage daughter, Kelly, on his own, his young wife having died when Kelly was an infant. Maddy in turn lost her previous love when he broke off their relationship after she became pregnant with their young daughter, Hannah. The well-observed interactions between friends and family add depth. Claire, part owner of O'Malley's bar and widow of Aidan's philandering brother, Billy, must come to terms with her deceased husband's infidelity, especially when she remembers Billy's affair with Gina, Maddy's colorful cousin, who has secrets of her own. Kelly, however, may be keeping the biggest secret of all, and it could tear Maddy and Aidan apart. Alternately poignant and humorous, this contemporary romance gracefully illuminates life's highs and lows.

From Booklist
Maddy Bainbridge is finally marrying Aidan O'Malley, culminating the courtship featured in Shore Lights (2003). Too many relatives are involved in the wedding preparations, and everyone's looking forward to the upcoming nuptials--everyone, that is, except Claire O'Malley, the widow of Aidan's brother, Billy. Claire has a deep, dark secret and hidden fears, both of which have paralyzed her ability to feel the joy of the occasion. However, secrets and fears are hard to keep to oneself when a crew from PBS is taping a documentary about one's family and town. This novel is filled with an almost bewildering number of aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews, but Bretton skillfully intertwines their stories with threads of emotions ranging from gentle humor to palpable angst. Chances Are can stand alone, but it makes more sense if Shore Lights is read first. Shelley Mosley

Happily ever after

Great story line and having family in New Jersey it was like being home and walking the boardwalk. Living in the west you forget how close multi-generational families can be unless of course you live in a very small town where everyone is family and knows your business. Probably the same thing without the bloodlines. LOL.

Ms Bretton developed her characters with such care that you can hear the accents and see the hand gestures.

Unfortunately I couldn't get into this book. At times I felt confused cause I didn't know who they were talking about, maybe its just me but I felt they were talking about one character to only found out it was another. I just couldn't get into it. Perhaps it is just me.
