Standing over six feet tall, with “eyes so blue you could swim in them,” Mike Flannigan is a well-respected sergeant in the Canadian Mounted Police—and a man of great courage, kindness, and humor. Together, he and his beloved Kathy manage to live a good, honest life in this harsh, unforgiving land—and find strength in a love as beautiful and compelling as the wilderness around them…

This book started my relentless reading hobby
By Peggy Vincent
I'm not the first woman who claims that this is the book that made her fall in love with reading. I came across it in my mother's bookshelf maybe 50 yrs ago, when I was about 11, and I don't believe anyone saw me for the next few days as I plowed my way through it.
Mrs. Mike is the love story of Katherine Mary, a young Irish girl from Boston, and Sergeant Mike of the Canadian Mounties, under whose supervision falls all of the great Canadian wilderness. Katherine Mary comes from a world of privilege and comfort. When she moves with her husband to the North Pole region, let's say it took a bit of adjustment. It's a romance, an adventure, a coming-of-age, a tragedy, and a history. Give it to your niece or daughter or granddaughter. Give it to your sister, your friend, your neighbor. I guarantee, they'll all love it.

A wonderful book for adolescence up to old age!
By A Customer
Like most other reviewers, I first read this book as a 13-year-old, 30 years ago. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Sgt. Mike Flannigan. Many years later, I was lucky enough to receive a first edition copy from my husband's family and it remains a treasure in my personal library. This book made a lifetime impression on me as a young girl to love and respect nature and native folklore, as well as to find a mate who is also my best friend! Highly recommended!

A different view the second, and third time around
By A Customer
Nearly 40 years ago, as a 15 year old girl, I took this book from my parent's bookcase on a cold, Sunday in March. I held out little hope because it was my mother's book, but I was bored and had run out of library books. From the opening page I was enthralled. I read all afternoon and into the evening. The love story of Kathy and Mike appealed to my young, romantic heart. But as I moved into the middle of the book, I missed the romance and found it less exciting. Their married life was not as romantic as their courtship. I read it again twenty years later and saw a different book, one about a maturing marriage and the problems it faced. It seemed much more relevant as a 35 year old mother. I read it again a couple years ago and saw even more in the story; it became a much richer novel each time I read it.
This book was a wise purchase by my mother in 1947 for it has continued to live, and grow. As a girl it was a love story, 40 years later it is the portrait of a marriage. I found a copy in a used book, just like my mother's. I will read it again.

An obscure museum's dead proprietor lies in a secret room surrounded by one of the world's most astonishing collections of Greek antiquities. Only a priceless Mycenaean death mask has been taken, along with the bones of a legendary hero thought to exist only in ancient myth. Looted by the Nazis, the treasures are still being sought by those whose dreams of glory remain undefeated.

The mask is an unparalleled discovery that will be a force for devastating retribution in the wrong hands. But by the time museum curator Deborah Miller learns the truth, it may be too late not only to save herself--but to reveal to the world the awesome secret she's uncovered.

From Publishers Weekly
Rich with historical and archeological detail, this well-constructed debut from Hartley celebrates the power of legend while delivering an engrossing mystery that skips nimbly between continents and cultures. At the heart of the story is Atlanta museum curator Deborah Miller, who's returning home after a successful exhibit when she receives a cryptic call telling her she needs to go back to the museum. Deborah does so only to find her friend, museum owner Richard Dixon, lying dead amid a cache of possibly priceless artifacts. Why was Richard hiding them? And, most importantly, what item from the stash was worth killing for? At first, Deborah believes the missing item to be a Mycenean death mask, but after exploratory trips to Greece and Russia and multiple attempts on her life, Deborah begins to suspect that the object in question is more powerful than a mere mask. Hartley has created an enduring heroine in Deborah, who's courageous, loyal and smart enough to learn from her mistakes. Although it's unclear whether there are more adventures in Deborah's future, this intricate and absorbing thriller augurs well for Hartley's career. (Apr.)

Not a bad book
By scot16897
I just finished this book, and I enjoyed it, but not as much as the other reviewers did, apparently. The overall plot was interesting, but the characters lacked development. While the main character, Deborah Miller, did have some history that was revealed, I never felt any sort of connection to the character. The detail invested in her background did not result in an investment in the character or a real concern for her when in peril.

Additionally, the book suffers the misfortune of being published just before a movie adaptation of a blockbuster book which also begins with the head of a museum being found dead inside the museum.

While the story had the requisite amount of plot twists and intriguing historical ties, the two largest surprises were telegraphed and I suspected what would happen many chapters before the big reveals. The pacing of the book was somehow off, as well. The action scenes were present and were adequately described, but the thrill of the chases was absent.

All told, I did enjoy this book, and it had a number of original ideas, which is increasingly rare. The beginning was fascinating as a prelude to the modern plotline. I think this shows some real potential for author A.J. Hartley.

Quite boring
By Azure Isis
I found this book very boring. Mostly about a young woman and her relationship issues with her own self. Not until the last few chapters does this book have any excitement and/or suspense.

By Ken L
I liked the book, but if you've ever been to GA... to go from Athens to Atlanta by way of Red Top Mtn & Lake Allatoona, you would probably detour by way of Chattanooga, TN. This is STUPID. The writer & EDITORS should check their directions. I've "written Steven Coont's off my list of readables" for the same reason.

Fast track to learning tarot
By Amazon Customer
I was *very* skeptical about this book at first. But if you give it an honest and sincere try, it's amazing how fast and how much you can really learn. Using the Rider-Waite or Universal Waite deck, the book focuses on getting you to pay attention to the images and intuitively respond to them. It's that attention that quickly helps you understand the meanings of the cards without a lot of memorization. I wouldn't use it as my only tarot book, and I don't because it really is a basic introduction. But if you use this book first, you may find - as I did - that any other tarot book you refer to will be much more accessible and effective.

Best Tarot Book on the Market
By A. Kirst
I've been trying to read tarot cards for a year, and I was always confused by the various meanings in the books. Then, I read The 2 Hour Tarot Tutor. It changed my readings - for the better! It taught me to use my intuition (which I had always found to be very difficult before). I even predicted that a friend would move his things out of his girlfriend's house - the very night that he was moving! If I had looked up the card meanings in a book, the reading would have been totally different and less accurate. For anyone wanting to learn the tarot, this book is for you.

Legion of the Lost: The True Experience of An American in the French Foreign Legion, by Jaime Salazar

The son of underpaid Mexican immigrants, Jaime earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue. But at twenty-three, he was disillusioned with the corporate fast track. So he became an outcast American in a hard-bitten group of recruits-men on the run from their pasts, men without hope: He joined the French Foreign Legion.

From the Legion's notoriously brutal training to Salazar's fierce competitiveness, ultimate disillusionment and dramatic desertion, Legion of the Lost is a compelling, firsthand account of today's French Foreign Legion that will dispel myths while adding to the legend of the finest trained army of warriors the world has ever known.

From Booklist
This odd but not dull volume could be subtitled A Yuppie in the Foreign Legion. A yuppie is precisely what Salazar was, with a probable fast-track career before him, when he took advantage of being in Paris to join the legion. He survived the grinding, even brutal training, and for some while he also survived his comrades. They were the lost and the lonely from all over Europe, especially the less salubrious parts of it, and Salazar admits to having never been quite comfortable with them, for all the legion's tight camaraderie. He also suspects that they were never quite comfortable with him, nor too unhappy when he deserted to return to his business career, able to say that he had proved something about himself to himself and to write a useful sketch of the contemporary legion and the mercenary scene in general, for readers interested in either information or thrills. Legion of the Bored
By Illuminatus
Those wondering whether the world needs another book on the French Foreign Legion will have their suspicions amply confirmed by this generally innocuous work.

The subject appears interesting enough - an educated American with nothing to escape from except a good job and a promising career decides to chuck it all in search of adventure, romance and personal fulfillment in the Foreign Legion. The problem is that there is no adventure.

Mr. Salazar does offer a faithful, if spotty, description of the Legion's brutal, often sadistic, training regime but after he succeeds and receives the treasured képi blanc, nothing happens. Without any wars or even police actions, Mr. Salazar discovers that life in an elite mercenary force with nothing to do can be just as boring as doing nothing anywhere else. The closest he comes to real combat is when he threatens to disembowel with his bare hands an Arab who pulls a knife on him. This potentially interesting situation is terminated by a copain who distracts the would be assailant by asking for directions to the nearest MacDonalds. Hardly the stuff of legend. On another occasion, we are treated to the tiresome account of the difficulties encountered in painting murals for the Legion's Christmas crèche without quality brushes. Not exactly Beau Geste is it?

Most of the second part of the book is devoted to curiously similar tales of getting very drunk and bedding as many willing women as possible while on leave. Finally, the dull periods between these orgies becomes too much to handle (By now, the reader feels the same way) and he deserts, only to return, be imprisoned, escape and return again. (One wonders how he managed to get an engineering degree at Purdue.)

At the end of this odyssey, Mr. Salazar still feels incomplete (like the reader) and we are left with the impression that he might have done just as well to run away to join the circus.

Rooting for the Russians
By Chris Brown
Jaime Salazar is one of the most arrogant, annoying, and talentless writers I have ever read. Yes, we get it. You are brilliant because you have a Purdue undergraduate degree (wow, very impressive). Headhunters shower you with job offers and you could be making mountains of money in corporate America. Yet you are a enfant terrible that needs to challenge himself and have adventures. The Peace Corps is for "pussies" and for some reason you decide against joining the US Marines. You can see this guy's chip on his shoulder from the first couple of pages and it just gets worse if you decide the slog through this horrible book. The only thing that kept me reading was the hope that his Russian enemies beat him to a pulp and that is what finally makes him desert.

A Yuppie in the Legion of the Damned
By Marco Antonio Abarca
There is a genre of literature consisting of memoirs of men who have served in the French Foreign Legion. There are two autobiographies that stand out as the very best examples of the genre. On one end of the spectrum is Simon Murray's "Legionnaire", a heroic story of privileged Brit who ends up fighting in Algeria. At the other end of the spectrum is Christian Jennings' "Mouthful fo Rocks", a self loathing but very funny Brit who ends up by deserting from the Legion. Unfortunately for Jaime Salazar, he falls into the camp of the deserters.

Salazar begins his journey as a 25 year old mechanical engineer straight out of Perdue University. While driving around in his new 5 series BMW, he realizes the corporate rat race is not for him. He quits his job and heads to Europe for a little backpacking adventure. While in France, he gets the strange notion of becoming a gentleman/private in the French Foreign Legion. Thus, the American college boy and former Yuppie begins his year long adventure in the Legion.

All the classic Legion scenes and characters are found in this memoir. There is strenous basic training at the Farm, brutal and stupid NCO's, back breaking physical training and plenty of drinking stories. Everything you would expect to be covered in a Legion tale is spelled out in vivid detail.

Like many a recruit, Salazar entered the Legion hoping for a Simon Murray experience and instead found a brutal peacetime Legion that specialized in devouring its own recruits. In the course of a year, Salazar goes from being a would be Simon Murray hero to a Christian Jennings' deserter. Salazar is refreshingly honest about his many failures and small triumphs inside the Legion. He is at his best in describing the small details of how he tried to survive his many grueling experiences. Unfortuantely, he lacks the funny self loathing and insights that Christian Jennings' brought to his story of deserting the Legion. In a sense, he leaves the Legion as naive as when he entered.

For afficionados of the Legion memoir genre, this volume stands out because he is one of the few Americans who have recently written about his experience. I think this may be the only American memoir that we will see for quite sometime. In this post 9/11 world, any young American itching for adventure and a little trigger time, can find plenty of it in his own nation's army.

Although not a classic, Jaime Salazar does a credible job of telling his story of Legion life in the late 1990's. I would recommend it to all afficionados of the genre and for naive young men who like to day dream of one day joining the Legion of the Damned.

The Horoscope book that is always right!
By Letsdnce34
I have had multiple books for multiple years and I always come back to this one. It is always right on the money for horoscopes. Even if I forget to read my horoscope, I can look back over the last week & see how true they were. I have not found any other book to be even close to the accuracy. I even buy one for my family and read theirs each day too to see how it integrates with mine.

Super Horoscopes are awesome
By Linda L. Anderson
Super Horoscopes has been on my book shopping list for the last six years. From its presentation of the characteristics expressed by the different signs of the zodiac to its daily prognostications, it offers fairly detailed descriptions of how your day will go. Horoscopes offered by other publishers have not been as satisfying. When it clearly predicted that I would not receive my regular paycheck one day, and it happened, I was hooked!
I even sometimes purchase the volumes that include my children's signs so that I can know when they might need extra support.

Sojourner: An Insider's View of the Mars Pathfinder Mission, by Andrew Mishkin

Andrew Mishkin, a senior systems engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a leader of NASA's robotic program, brings us this insider's look at the Mars Pathfinder probe that electrified the world's imagination.

One hundred twenty-two million miles away from her controllers, a sophisticated robot smaller than a microwave oven did what had never been done before-explored the rocky, red terrain of Mars. Then, six-wheeled Sojourner beamed spectacular pictures of her one-of-a-kind mission back to Earth. And millions of people were captivated.

Now, with the touch of an expert thriller writer, Sojourner operations team leader Andrew Mishkin tells the inside, human story of the Mars Pathfinder mission's feverish efforts to build a self-guided, offroading robot to explore the surface of the Red Planet. With witty, compelling anecdotes, he describes the clash of temperamental geniuses, the invention of a new work ethic, the turf wars, the chewing-gum solutions to high-tech problems, the controlled chaos behind the strangely beautiful creation of an artificial intelligence-and the exhilaration of inaugurating the next great age of space exploration

From Publishers Weekly
Millions of viewers watched in fascination in July 1997 as the Mars "rover" Sojourner (named after Sojourner Truth) maneuvered around the Red Planet's surface like an interplanetary dune buggy, sending back pictures of rocks and boulders that were given whimsical names by mission scientists (e.g., Yogi, Scooby-Doo). Mishkin, senior systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where the rover was developed, chronicles the years of trial and error to create a vehicle that would be the right size for the Pathfinder lander and could withstand the temperature extremes on the Martian surface while maneuvering around rocks without getting stuck or driving over the edge of an abyss. It takes 40 minutes for a signal to travel from Mars to Earth and back, so JPL scientists had to make the rover's navigational systems as self-sufficient as possible. The author details how software and hardware teams often clashed over the best ways to solve the problems they encountered during development. Mishkin himself discovered a potentially fatal error shortly before launch: a wrong parameter in the computer clock would have woken Sojourner in the middle of the night instead of in the morning, but the robot needed sunlight to function. Mishkin's detailed history undoubtedly will interest engineers and dedicated science techies, but readers looking for an account of Sojourner's accomplishments on Mars will be disappointed-the rover's 80 days of exploration are given one quick chapter. Nevertheless, Mishkin has written a valuable chronicle of one of NASA's only mission in the past decade to have captured the public's imagination. Photos not seen by PW.

Worth the read
By S. G Spires
Mishkin takes the reader on the bumpy, rock-strewn path of rover development at JPL and does so in readable terms. Forget acronyms or dry engineering terms here, it's a highly readable account of one of NASA's great achievements of the past decade. The book is full of anecdotes and good writing.
It also shows how the Mars program had too grand a scale with their intial rover program in the early 1990s. They scaled it back and came up with the smaller Pathfinder, or Sojourner (but what everybody just calls "the rover") that was very well executed in 1997.
Now, two more rovers are slated to land on Mars by Jan. 4, 2004. Read this book and the story of how long and interesting that voyage truly is will unfold.

Inaccuracy and disparaging remarks about key contributors
By David J. Atkinson
I was also present during the early days of robotics at JPL and witnessed some of the events described by Mishkin. I have worked with Andy Mishkin in the past and share his enthusiasm for our exploratiion of Mars. I must take issue, however, with his characterization of the contributions of Dr. David P. Miller and Dr. Rajiv Desai to the advent of micro-rovers at JPL. I am also saddened by his imperceptive and self-serving observations of their motives and personalities. I agree that the team of which Mishkin was a member were very worried about the micro-rover work being carried out by Miller, Desai, and others. This is because the combined technologies of behavior control and small rovers were demonstrably capable of automatically accomplishing tasks of scientific interest without the computational overhead, mass or system complexity of the "larger" robots being developed in Mishkin's organization. As such, they represented a threat to continued funding of Wilcox and others' work and leadership. Since that time, it appears there are unique mission requirements for both large-scale rovers and micro-rovers in a variety of mission scenarios. The team led by Dr. Miller and Dr. Desai was the only one at JPL (during the period 1987 to 1994) to successfully conceive, research, develop and demonstrate micro-rover systems using reactive behavioral control techniques, and was the first in the world to integrate and demonstrate such systems doing mission-relevant behaviors in a laboratory setting. Small robots in space have been a staple of many science fiction stories. They actually built the technology. Their accomplishments were documented in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, and continue to be highly praised by roboticists, space scientists and NASA. Dr. Miller was viewed by NASA HQ as the agency's expert on micro-rovers, and this was also true of senior managers at JPL. Drs. Miller and Desai were concerned first with the success of Mars exploration and not motivated AT ALL by a need to "take over" robotics being done in Mishkin's organization. They had no shortage of funding and the future looked very bright indeed. I know from personal observation that they tried very hard to work collaboratively with the other group, but were rebuffed and systematically excluded from important meetings, engineering discussions, and overall just treated unprofessionally. Nevertheless, they made heroic efforts to contribute. This came to a head in the major technology demonstration described by Mishkin, where the micro-rover unfortunately failed after just a portion of the demo. I don't know whether a failed piece of electronics was the problem, or software, or operations, or system engineering. I do know that Drs. Miller and Desai tried their very best in a hostile work environment where they were tasked to provide a highly technical, integrated product in absence of full collaboration with the rest of the engineering team. At least, Mishkin acknowledges that the demo, although limited, was enough to capture NASA's favorable attention and led directly to the formation of what would later become the Pathfinder mission. And I am pleased that he acknowledges that Dr. Miller was pivotal in convincing the NASA Mars Science Working Group and the OSSA Solar System Exploration Committee that a micro-rover oriented mission was possible and could return valuable science information. As a final note, Dr. Miller and Dr. Desai each left JPL soon after these event. They were never able to share personally in success of the Sojourner robot which their own work had inspired and enabled. I respect Andrew Mishkin and his many accomplishments at JPL. He just got this part of history wrong, which I attribute not to maliciousness but to the "group-think" of his parent organization and lack of personal knowledge of the actions taken by his managers.

Sojourner a home run
By Neil S. Rieck
I just finished Andrew Mishkin's booked titled "Sojourner" and I couldn't put it down. Mishkin, a Senior Systems Engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), helped to design, build and operate humanity's first operational MARS rover. The book starts back in the 1960's with a General Motors built rover which was meant for, but not flown on, the Lunar Surveyor missions of that decade. He explains how this machine became the basis for several JPL skunk-works created machines including the one that finally did the job in 1997. The book contains just enough technical information (both hardware and software) to be interesting but not so much as to lose the non-technical reader. There are two added chapters which cover the missions in 2001 and 2004.

View our feature on J.D. Robb’s Eve Dallas series.

Eve Dallas is one tough cop. It should take more than a seemingly ordinary middle-aged lady to make her fall apart. But when that lady is Trudy Lombard, all bets are off. Just seeing Trudy at the station plunges Eve back to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized young girl—and trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits smiling in front of her.

Trudy claims she came all the way to New York just to see how Eve is doing. But Eve’s fiercely protective husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise—and a blackmail attempt by Trudy proves his suspicion correct. Eve and Roarke just want the woman out of their lives. But someone else wants her dead. And when her murder comes to pass, Eve and Roarke will follow a circuitous and dangerous path to find out who turned the victimizer into a victim.

From Publishers Weekly
After clashing with clones and killers in last year's Origin in Death, New York City police lieutenant Eve Dallas ("Her eyes were the color of good, aged whiskey and were long like the rest of her. And like the rest of her, they were all cop") settles back into a more conventional mystery. In December 2059, a mysterious woman shows up in Eve's office claiming to be her "mama." It's Trudy Lombard, the cruel foster mom who took nine-year-old Eve in after Eve killed her abusive father. Trudy made Eve take cold baths and locked her in closets, among other torments, and now Trudy wants Eve to pay $2 million to keep her past a secret. Readers of the series will know how Roarke, Eve's rich, deadly husband, handles the situation; he tosses Trudy out on her ear. When Trudy is found murdered the next day, it's up to Eve to catch the killer and prove that neither she nor Roarke was behind the bludgeoning. All the action takes place over Christmas, and Eve, being Eve, complains about the foolishness of the holiday, but Roarke et al. continue to slowly teach Eve the virtues of love, family and friendship. This is number 22 in a series that still manages to feel fresh. (Jan.)

Vintage J.D. Robb
By Deborah Wiley
J.D. Robb continues her excellent series with yet another great installment. In this book, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is forced to confront painful memories from her past when one of her foster mothers, Trudy Lombard, surfaces at the police station to talk to Eve. Trudy had left emotional scars on Eve and memories of cold baths, being locked in the dark, and scrubbing the kitchen with a toothbrush overwhelm her. Eve leaves the police station instead of wrapping up an investigation, which is so out of character that Peabody contacts Eve's husband, Roarke. When Roarke arrives home, he finds Eve huddled under the hot shower. This is the last weak moment for Eve as she pulls herself together to face her emotions at seeing Trudy again. Meanwhile, Roarke is furious and fully expects Trudy to visit him as well as he suspects blackmail is behind Trudy's return. Sure enough, Trudy attempts to extort $2 million dollars from Roarke at his office; the resulting scene is very powerful and displays Roarke's full capabilities. Eve wants to confront Trudy herself and Eve and Roarke go to Trudy's hotel to tell her they will not be subjected to blackmail. However, Trudy is dead and the rest of the novel focuses on Eve's investigation into Trudy's death. Eve also has to cope with her own indifference to Trudy's death as she generally feels a sense of compassion for the victims. This was a highly enjoyable read and a great addition to the series. Highly recommended!

A slower paced yet more in depth novel.
By Valerie Matteson
"Origin of Death" with the Icove case becomes the catalyst for the action in this new novel. Eve and Roarke had a lot of television "vid" coverage locally and nationally because of that case involving genetics and murder. It is now a Friday, a few days before Christmas and Eve has caught a scene where a party Santa has jumped out a high rise and landed on a pedestrian killing him as well. Eve makes her partner Peabody the "primary" on the case and she does well on scene.

When Lt. Dallas walks back into her office at Central she finds a middle aged lady that she doesn't at first recognize - she buried the memory of this woman - Trudy Lombard, former foster mother who was anything BUT a nurturing type. Darkness and cold baths flash Eve back and cause her to throw Trudy out as Trudy makes sly insinuations. Eve forewarns Roarke at home and sure enough the next day, Trudy goes to him to try to blackmail him for two million dollars for her to keep quiet about Eve's past. Of course, Roarke will have no part of that and puts the "fear of God" into Trudy who rushes away - still plotting and planning.

Eve and Roarke spend some time together Saturday preparing for a Christmas party that night for over 200 hundred people. Eve even gets into the swing of things helping supervising the decorating of the ballroom and finding she can handle a more "domestic" type of task.

Eve and Roarke decide on Sunday to go visit Trudy at her hotel and explain that they will not give in to her blackmail and so that Eve can confront her with confidence. They find Trudy's son Bobby's wife banging on the hotel door. They have a maid open it and Trudy is found dead!! While Eve and Roarke are not suspects as they were surrounded by people at their party, a host of other possible suspects including other former foster children are soon added to the list. Eve has sentimental feelings for Trudy's son Bobby as he used to sneak her food but she does not let that get in the way of her investigation.

As Eve deals with her memories and finding Trudy's killer, she and Roarke also share happy times at Christmas and she grows closer to Dr. Mira and her family as well. A wonderful story and actually a welcome break from the previously more gory "Origin in Death".

Pause for a break

Memory in Death is the latest in the in Death series written by J.D. Robb, aka Nora Roberts. This latest novel is set at Christmas, just a couple of weeks after the conclusion of the Icove case of Origin in Death, and the two novels are very strongly connected. For, the concomitant publicity wrought by the resolution of the Icove case is the primary cause for the action of the new novel.

In brief, Trudy Lombard who was once Eve Dallas's foster mother, an abusive and sadistic woman, catches the news about the Icove case which features the primary Eve Dallas, married to the fabulously wealthy Roarke. Resolved to be repaid for having housed Dallas for a few months, Lombard comes to New York City with intent to blackmail Dallas and Roarke so she will be silent about Dallas's traumatic childhood. Though Dallas is badly shaken and spun into the black well of her traumatic childhood memories, she rejects Lombard, as does Roarke whom the woman later approaches. The action of the novel commences when Dallas and Roarke set out to Lombard's hotel to face her down together and discover her murdered with her body showing signs of a severe beating.

Fans of J.D. Robb are doomed to disappointment if they come to Memory in Death expecting the tension and bloody trails that are the hallmark of previous novels or even the philosophical musings that are the subtext of Origin in Death. Instead, Memory in Death mirrors the slowing down of business activity-even cop business-that occurs as Christmas nears; thus, it pays homage to the Christmas season in spite of its unorthodox opening with the death of a party Santa.

Though restraining the central characters to the investigation of one murder, Robb retains the sense of the diurnal occurrence of murder by having other investigative officers report in to Dallas on the progress of their cases. This is something that she has seldom done even though readers sometimes hear about the case-load of a regular like Baxter. Thus, Robb slows down the pace, reduces the frantic urgency, and so sets the stage for what Christmas is about: loved ones, family, and friends.

In a sense, the novel is a Christmas home-coming for the regulars, almost all of whom are present at the party, and who are like family to Eve Dallas and Roarke. The party itself, like Dallas's later conversation with Peabody when she calls from Scotland, is given too short shrift, and this undercuts in some slight way to holiday celebration.

One of the benefits of the slow pace of Memory in Death is that it allows for the development of relationships, such as that between Dallas and Charlotte Mira. The Miras are shown, through Charlotte's conversation with Eve, to be a warts and all less than perfect couple. The result is that Dallas, who struggles periodically with roles and the interpersonal aspect of marriage, is reassured that perfection is unlikely. Mira continues to teach Dallas about marriage, family, and friendship.

If Feeney is Dallas's surrogate father, Charlotte Mira is her surrogate mother and friend who cares enough to plead for them to remain friends. Dallas's lack of ease with personal relationships outside of her marriage and the work situation, even her hardness, is highlighted by Mira's plea. In the mushy grounds of disagreement, love, anger, and exchange that is friendship, Dallas is often lost. Happily for her sake, Charlotte Mira helps her find her way back. Dallas's discomfort is also shown in the abrupt way she dismisses Peabody who calls from her Scotland visit with McNab's relatives. Moreover, some of the sticks-in-the-craw dirt comes out in a fight between Eve and Roarke which makes them an even more realistic couple because Dallas vents her envy that Roarke's family situation turned out so well for him. The dust up between the two and its resolution reminds that envy and anger can bubble up against even those we love.

At the heart of the novel is the rich irony that Trudy Lombard, who, in life, had psychologically abused her female foster charges, in death is the subject of an equally psychological murder investigation. Call it a consequence of the Christmas slow down or what you will, it is undeniable that Memory in Death is not action-driven but more focused on the detailing of the deductive reasoning process that is so crucial to the resolution of criminal cases.

The characters of Bobby Lombard and his wife Zana make the novel work on several different levels. For one, Bobby is the vehicle through whom Dallas realizes that not all of her childhood memories are horrific. Though Bobby Lombard did nothing openly to stem his mother's abuse of her foster girls, he compensated by sneaking Eve food when Trudy punished her by withholding food. In looking backwards, Dallas's experience with the neighbor's boy's airskate foreshadows the tough-minded woman who is unafraid of taking physical shots in the performance of her duties. In remembering him, Eve recalls that what prompted her flight from Trudy Lombard's house was her failure to stand up for the boy, who had been kind to her, when Trudy Lombard falsely accused him of vandalism. For another, Bobby is also cause of Dallas's realizing that true love is not blind to the faults of the beloved. The ability to see the strengths and weaknesses, even the pettiness of the beloved is critical to the formation of a strong bond between a couple. Through Zana come some of the detours that add some measure of suspense, even drama, to this slow paced novel. The philosophical issue at the core of the novel is raised through the Lombard family; through them Robb forces her readers to question whether it is ever possible to say that one knows a person. Certainly, Bobby knows neither his mother nor his wife. This then raises the concomitant issue, if we cannot and do not know whom we love, then can we really love them?

Though there are head feints to prevent the resolution of the crime, none is strong enough to counteract what Dallas's gut tells her about the identity of the murderer. Nevertheless, she cannot go on gut alone but must still build the case so that it leads to a sustainable arrest, must still has to follow the evidentiary trail and employ deductive reasoning to close the case.

Through Dallas's insistence on standing for Trudy Lombard who abused the young Eve Dallas, Robb reveals the strength of character of both the protagonist and her husband Roarke. Even though Dallas despises Trudy and has no real enthusiasm for the case, she still pursues the investigation to its conclusion. This integrity in the face of provocation-the memories of abuse which would argue against Dallas pursuing Lombard's killer or rejoicing in her death-is reflected in Roarke who, though he would kill those who have harmed/would harm his wife, will not engage in action that would destroy Dallas and their relationship. This, integrity of character, then, points to their suitability for one another.

Nevertheless, in the end, Dallas is almost despairing, which mood Robb builds through a judicious depiction of character, use of language and context. Other in Death novels have ended on a cheerier note; this one forces it. In the end, though, Robb has the wisdom to let her readers breathe, to relax a little after the high strung tension and ethical horror she depicts in Origin in Death.

Great reading. Make sure and buy it.
