From Booklist
Ian Woodward, one of the firefighter heroes of the 9/11 terrorist attack, has been crippled since that horrible day. Finally, at the urging of his brother-in-law, Noah Callahan, from On the Line [BKL Jl 04], Ian starts teaching at the Hidden Cove Fire Academy. But imprisoned as much by his self-pity as by his wheelchair, he broke actress Lisel Loring's heart. She returned to the Broadway stage only to suffer a breakdown. Back in Hidden Cove, she is being stalked by an obsessive fan. Lisel hires disgraced ex-cop Rick Ruscio to protect her. Rick's community-service job is at a preschool, where he meets teacher Faith McPherson, who, living up to her name, tries to restore his belief in himself. Self-acceptance and healing come hard to these men, even in a place as neighborly as Hidden Cove. The talented Shay offers another heartwarming tale of brave men and women. Shelley Mosley

This series is just getting better I could not put this one so it was Hello or should I say Good-night at 1:30 this morning! Ian Woodward was one of the firefighters that got hurt in 9/11 his spine was damaged so he is in a wheelchair. Last Summer he told the woman he loves that he did not love her Broadway star Lisel Loring loves Ian and has had a hard time accepting his rejection, she still hopes! Lisel is now being stalked by a crazed woman who will do anything to get close to Lisel ! Lisel has hired disgraced ex-policeman Rick Ruscio as her bodyguard will Rick be able to keep her safe? Rick must do community service at the local preschool, where he meets teacher Faith McPherson. Faith and her family accept Rick’s family into their lives, Faith is falling in love with Rick but he believes he is not good enough for her. Will Ian and Lisel get a happy ending, what about Rick and Faith? How close is the stalker to Lisel? I was gifted a copy for an honest review barwatts@telus.net

superb romantic suspense thriller
By A Customer
Firefighter Ian Woodward was a first responder to the Twin Towers tragedy. While many of his brothers and sisters died on 9/11, he lived but lost the use of his legs and had to learn activities for daily living. Two years later, the wheelchair bound Ian visited his sister in Hidden Cove, New York; he met and formed a friendship with actress Lisel Loring, but when she wanted to take it to a more loving level he withdrew feeling inadequate to be her lover.

A year after fleeing from Lisel, Ian wonders what he has to live for although he enjoys teaching at Hidden Cove Academy. Lisel returns to Hidden Cove, but an out of control fan stalks her. She has hired disgraced former police officer Rick Ruscio to protect her. Rick is doing community services at a preschool as part of his conviction. There he meets teacher Faith McPherson, whose lust for life consumes him although he feels inadequate to be worthy of her love. As the danger from the stalker mounts these stubborn dumb males do not yet comprehend the strength of the females who love them.

The Hidden Cove tales continue to provide superb romantic suspense thrillers while paying homage to firefighters. The current tale is terrific as Kathryn Shay employs multiple story lines tied together by Lisle and favorites from previous books return. Readers will cry for Ian, yet Ms. Shay does not paint a tearjerker or provoke pity tears for him. NOTHING MORE TO LOSE is a strong entry in one of the best running collections on the market today.

The best yet
By Christine Pearson
Once in awhile a book grabs you so much that you can't think of anything else. You want to finish it because it's so good, yet if you do the characters will be out of your life. This book is an amazing story for anyone who has been touched by the 9/11 tragedy and how life is too precious to waste. Ian and Lisel's story draws you in while the sub-plot with Rick and Faith makes you believe in both love and second chances. Characters from Shay's last books make an appearance and it's like bringing back family for a reunion. The book can stand on it's own, but read all three in order. This one, however, is the most amazing and heart-warming.

Seventh Heaven, by Alice Hoffman

Nora Silk doesn’t really fit in on Hemlock Street, where every house looks the same. She's divorced. She wears a charm bracelet and high heels and red toreador pants. And the way she raises her kids is a scandal. But as time passes, the neighbors start having second thoughts about Nora. The women’s apprehension evolves into admiration. The men’s lust evolves into awe. The children are drawn to her in ways they can't explain. And everyone on this little street in 1959 Long Island seems to sense the possibilities and perils of a different kind of future when they look at Nora Silk...This extraordinary novel by the author of The River King and Local Girls takes us back to a time when the exotic both terrified and intrigued us, and despite our most desperate attempts, our passions and secrets remained as stubbornly alive as the weeds in our well-trimmed lawns.

From Publishers Weekly
In the full flowering of her extraordinary talent, Hoffman has produced a wise, poignant and uplifting novel luminous with the sensitive evocation of ordinary lives. The setting is a Long Island, N.Y., housing development from 1959 to 1960, a place of conforming, happy families where husbands mow the lawns of the tract houses and wives meet for coffee, where "safety hung over the neighborhood like a net." The arrival of Nora Silk, a brassy divorcee with two young children, is the catalyst for disturbing changes and events, some of them violent. Plucky, impetuous, innocently seductive and a messy housekeeper, Nora is anathema to the subdivision wives, who ostracize her and whose children torment her eight-year-old clairvoyant son, Billy. But as Nora's presence disturbs the community, it is slowly revealed that behind the identical facades of the houses are secret lives of turmoil, restlessness and longing. As in all Hoffman novels, mundane existence is disrupted in surprising ways: families disintegrate, a teenager dies, a placid housewife disappears. And ultimately Nora, whose optimism about her dead-end life is unquenchable, becomes an instrument of healing. Hoffman has intuitive grasp of the thoughts and feelings that are masked by conventional behavior. Like some of her characters, she seems to have a spooky ability to read thoughts; how else to account for her unerring understanding of people of nearly every age and across a broad social spectrum? She has a gift for perceiving the cruelty of children and the wide gulf that yawns between the most loving, attentive parents and their offspring's unknown wishes and deeds. As usual, she tells more than a compulsively readable story. She does magic, she unsettles you and she leaves you feeling emotionally purged and satisfied. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections.

From Library Journal
In felicitously recording the lives of newcomers-on-the-block Nora Silk and her sons, baby James and young Billy, Hoffman proves once again that she can tell a charming story about suburbia that is, at once, mundane and oddly transcendent. Nora, a young, sexy divorcee, moves to the suburbs of New York City following her divorce (in 1959 a scandalous event). All alone, she manages work, her sons, and assorted domestic responsibilities with quirky flair, if not thoroughness (and occasional help from assorted magic spells inherited from her grandfather). Hoffman takes the reader back to that apparently innocent time and into a "nice" neighborhood, where the sunny replicated exteriors of the houses hide sometimes desperate lives within. Nora and her neighbors signal lifestyles of the future: a woman walks out on her family, another goes back to work; a boy is abused and strikes back; a father leaves home. Combining reality with magic, this novel surpasses At Risk (LJ 7/88). It should attract a wide readership. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 3/15/90.

Reading this book is like observing others' lives via a dream
By online shopper
Reading this book is like observing others' lives via a dream. I liked the setting (1959-60) and found it interesting how much life has changed since then. It was nostalgic in some ways, and horrifying in other ways because of the different societal norms. But it was a good book, well written, and it was hard to put it down even though it was past midnight and my eyes were bleary. I would highly recommend this book.

Original style, derivative plot; but very good summer reading.
By A. Ryan
Into the suburban paradise of Hemlock Street struts Nora Silk, newly divorces with two kids. She's the hot single mom that creates what can only be described as a quiet uproar among the conservative `50s families, most of whom have never met a divorcee let alone one who wears tight pants and dangly earrings. Nora naively assumes that she will make friends and be accepted with the other women on the block, but all they can see is her failures as a mother and the way their husbands have taken notice of her. Predictably, the adults and children alike react by judging and alienating Nora and her awkward son Billy.

The premise and feel of this book reminded me heavily of the movie version of The Witches of Eastwick. You have a community of straight-laced people who present every appearance of the fulfillment of the American Dream to the outside world, living blissfully uneventful lives as far as anyone can tell. Then some unconventional outsider comes in and stirs things up, introducing just a bit of the supernatural into their close-minded little world, and suddenly the carefully woven facades unravel all over the place as everybody tries to deal with the chaos. Alice Hoffman is hardly the first author to examine the theme of conformity vs. free spirit, but she did so with a nice attention to detail and a sympathetic eye to those judgmental characters who might have been portrayed as Bad Guys by a more simplistic mind.

The most redeeming aspect of Seventh Heaven (which I gather is sort of a trademark of Hoffman novels) is the element of magic that seems to infuse the natural world which surrounds and crosses through the artificial human culture. At times the magical is almost an undercurrent, barely expressed; at others, it is revealed as a surreal encounter. At its best, Hoffman's use of observation in place of descriptive similies is poignant enough on its own merit. The author knows how and when to peel back layers from her characters' minds; she elevates these surprises to insights, then a spell of sorts. There is a flavor of genius in this writing.

However, it is hard to forgive the flaws of this book. The concept of the Fifties as a false utopian ideal of our middle class imaginations is well-worn by now -too obvious to be worthy of the talents of this writer. Then, the magical connection between Mr. Olivera's sudden demise before the start of the story and the curse on his house thereafter is never explained. Nora Silk, despite being introduced as the main character, remains the biggest mystery. Her character cries out for more development. More frustratingly, we glimpse hints about Nora's mystical talents that we never get to explore (without giving too much away, some major plot points hinge on this). Sometimes Hoffman is too subtle for her own good.

Seventh Heaven was a nice, light page-turner. It introduced me to Alice Hoffman, and I will probably follow up by reading one or two more of her works sooner or later. You could say it has done its job competently.

A pleasure
By AnneM
Very different than any of the other Hoffman books I've read so far. I would not have recognized her writing in this at all, whereas her other books I do. Not the mystical, somewhat twisted, themes I also enjoy. This was a pleasure to read about regular lives that all ended up perfectly.

fun holiday puzzler
By A Customer
Christmas is right around the corner and crossword puzzle construction guru Belle Graham and her husband Private Investigator Roscoe Polycrates are getting into the holiday spirit. Roscoe is a little concerned that three dangerous men broke out of a Boston Prison and might be heading for his hometown Newcastle. Roscoe and his two policemen friends are dressed in Santa suits collecting children's gifts from merchants who used the stores as drop off points.

Roscoe and Company are pulled over by the police because they think the Santas are the escaped convicts. The real criminals are in a gun shop getting supplies as they make a run for freedom. Meanwhile Roscoe and Belle and their two canines believe their master is buying two love birds for his wife and their antics to dissuade him are hilarious. At a neighborhood Christmas party, gifts are being exchanged from a grab bag when the third escaped convict (the other two already in custody) breaks in and is brought down by one of the canines. Christmas in Newcastle is a success.

Just like the animals in the Mrs. Murphy books by Rita Mae Brown, the animals in Newcastle are able to communicate with one another which make for amusing scenes. Belle and Roscoe are as much in love as ever and both construct puzzles as a means of communicating what Christmas gifts they bought for one another. Nero Blanc has given the perfect Christmas gift for crossword fanatics, the canine caper crew lovers

and mystery fans.

The premise was good, a protagonist who designs crossword puzzles
By Techno geek
This was OK, just OK. The story could have used some more character development and a bit more backstory for the main characters. The premise was good, a protagonist who designs crossword puzzles, but overall the story was a bit unfocused and needed more development.

On What Grounds (Coffeehouse Mysteries, No. 1), by Cleo Coyle

Book #1 in New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle's Coffeehouse Mystery series..."The perfect cup of coffee is a mystifying thing. To many of my customers, the entire process seems like some sort of alchemy they dare not try at home...."

Ten years ago, Clare Cosi left an unhappy marriage along with a job she loved: managing the historic Village Blend coffeehouse in New York's Greenwich Village. For a decade, she was happy raising her daughter in the quiet suburbs of New Jersey; but now that Joy is grown and gone, life has gotten way too quiet for Clare. With a little cajoling from Madame, the Blend's flamboyant, elderly owner, Clare agrees to return to her old job, and right from the start she gets one heck of a jolt. On her first morning back as Village Blend manager, Clare unlocks the front door to find her beautiful, young assistant manager unconscious in the back of the store, coffee grounds strewn everywhere. As Anabelle is rushed to the hospital, police arrive to investigate, but Detective Mike Quinn finds no sign of forced entry or foul play, and he deems it an accident. Clare disagrees; and after Quinn leaves, there are a few questions she just can't get out of her mind, like why was the trash bin in the wrong place? If this wasn't an accident, are her other baristas in danger? And are all NYPD detectives this attractive?

Just what I was looking for....
By Lizz A. Belle
I am an avid mystery reader, but it has to have a side bar, like J.Q.'s cats in "The Cat Who Series..." or Joanna Carl's chocolate series. I was incredibly pleased to find a new series about my favorite beverage in the world: coffee. I agree with some of the other reviewers, the coffee trivia could be a little heavy at times, and for any of us coffee conniseurs, we know what goes into a Hazelnut latte(which happens to be my drink of choice), a double espresso, etc. I did like Coyle's metaphors in the story, about the milk being a while tsunami for example. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series and am pleased to see three more have joined this one. I will become an avid reader of her books, although I do agree this book left me with a serious hankering for some good coffee.

not liking the protagonist...at all
By moria2
This is a hard one to write. On What Grounds is the book in the Coffehouse Mystery Series. The story was good as was the writing. I liked the supporting characters and even the heavy info on coffee was interesting if a bit over the top. Unfortunately, I just did no like the main character, Clare Cosi. She is over done, over reactive, and a bit shallow. All in all, Clare is a very unlikable character. I liked the disreputable ex-husband and meddling ex-mother-in-law, so much better than the main character.

Been There, Done That, by Carol Snow

Plenty of thirtysomething women would be thrilled to look like a teenager. But journalist Kathy Hopkins wishes she could be taken a little more seriously-or, at the very least, order a glass of wine without producing ID. Now her youthful appearance is forcing her into an undercover assignment she could do without: posing as a freshman at a small liberal arts college where, rumor has it, a secret prostitution ring is flourishing.

It could mean a career-making exposé. But right now, pretending to be eighteen means dealing with a Clay Aiken--obsessed roommate, late-night parties that test her aging body--and most embarrassing of all, a massive crush on a guy who's just turned legal. Suddenly, Kathy's got the chance to do it all over again, hopefully better this time. Fortunately she's a quick learner.

From Publishers Weekly
When Kathy Hopkins' ex-boyfriend Tim calls, she never figured he would suggest an undercover assignment for both his political journal and her new employer, Salad magazine. Kathy's new job as the Boston-based magazine's education editor needs a jump-start, and Tim's proposition proves tantalizing, even if it is a bit embarrassing: Kathy moves into a dorm room at Mercer College, exploiting her youthful face to pose as a freshman and uncover a student prostitution ring. But what begins as a predictable chick lit novel takes a fresh turn when Kathy, surrounded by self-conscious 18-year-olds, comes to terms with being single and 32. Her youthful classmates remind her of what being 18 was like (not all bliss), and help her realize she has outgrown Tim, whom she fell for in college. And while the investigation seems to go nowhere, Kathy gets action in the bed of a 22-year-old R.A. Snow's humorous, wise debut serves up romance with a bit of social commentary on the state of singledom and the benefits of maturity in a youth- and romance-obsessed society.

Great Book
By Courtney Rabideau
Kathy Hopkins is a 32 year old journalist who looks far younger than she is. When her exboyfriend heres about a prostitution ring at a nearby collage he thinks that Kathy would be the perfect person to investigate.

As Katie O'Conner Kathy infeltrates the Collage getting to know the mindset of the people in her dorm , including her Clay Aiken opsesed roomate, and the various other people living in the dorm, while trying to investigate. Unfortunitly she does not really come up with much informatiion until it is too late.

Beyond this she has to deal with her feelings for her 21 year old R.A. as well as trying to keep her undercover gig underraps from her pregnant best friend.

Three From Galilee: The Young Man from Nazareth, by Marjorie Holmes

Marjorie Holmes, the award-winning author of such classic bestsellers as I've Got to Talk to Somebody, God, was renowned for making the Bible come to life in books that brought hope and inspiration to millions. The first novel in this trilogy-her acclaimed, hugely successful Two from Galilee-told the great love story of Mary and Joseph as never before.

Now, in Three from Galilee, Holmes's fictionalized retelling of the life of Jesus covers a period overlooked by the Gospels-the "lost years" between age 12, when Jesus debated the elders in the temple, to the age of 30, when he actually began his ministry. With great reverence, she dares to wonder what Jesus did during those years, if he was like other young men of his time, and whether he experienced God's greatest gift to humanity-love. Using her remarkable talents, Holmes brings Jesus, his parents, brothers, sisters, and friends to life in a story that is dramatic, deeply moving, and unforgettable.

From Library Journal
Following Two from Galilee (Revell, 1972), popular inspirational writer and novelist Holmes continues her novelistic retelling of the life of Jesus, attempting to portray his experiences as a youth both human and divine. But in a novel whose plot is already largely determined, Holmes has provided little depth in the character or spirituality of Jesus, who often appears sentimental and indecisive. The issue of Jesus' messianic consciousness, which has puzzled theologians for generations, appears here as a 20th-century identity crisis incongruously inserted in a first-century setting. Speculative writing about the early life of Jesus is fraught with difficulties, and this novel does not overcome them. The intended audience will have decidedly mixed reactions. Holmes is at work on a concluding volume entitled The Messiah . Cynthia Widmer, Williamstown, Mass.

From the Publisher
From Marjorie Holmes, one of the most beloved authors of our times, comes the stunning story you have been asking for, the inspiring sequel to her national bestseller, Two From Galilee...Three From Galilee.

Rooted in her broad knowledge of the Bible and of history, Marjorie's wonderful new novel explores the "lost years" of Jesus' young manhood-a period not even mentioned in the Bible. Where did he go and what did he do between the age of twelve, when we last see him debating the elders in the temple, and the age of thirty, when he began his ministry? What were those years like for Mary? Was her son as human as his brothers? Was it possible that he, too, could fall in love? With great reverence, Marjorie Holmes employs her remarkable talent for vividly recreating characters and background to bring Jesus, his parents, brothers, sisters, and friends to sparkling life. Three From Galilee is a dramatic, deeply moving, and unforgettable story.

About the Author
Marjorie Holmes was born in Iowa, where she graduated from Cornell College in 1931. She moved to the Washington area, where she wrote columns for the Washington Star and Woman's Day magazine, and also taught university-level writing courses. Holmes is best known for her fictional trilogy Two from Galilee (1982), Three from Galilee (1985), and The Messiah (1987). She wrote 32 books, many of them bestsellers, including the classic, I've Got to Talk to Somebody, God. Holmes was awarded the Freedom Medal. She died in 2002.

Interesting and inspiring!
By Donna K.
While this was a very well-written and inspiring book, I didn't like it as much as I enjoyed Two from Galilee. I felt that the author took too many liberties, deviating from the Bible and religious teachings about Jesus's life. (One example that bothered me that before He began his ministry, the author has Him fall in love and intend to marry a local woman. I felt disrespectful thinking about Jesus as a sexual/romantic being). As I read along, I had to constantly remind myself that this is a work of fiction and is not meant to be Biblically accurate, yet I didn't have these issues with the prequel to this book. Still, it was a worthwhile and reflective book to read, because it helps us to focus on the humanity of Jesus, and adds to the development of our personal relationship with Him.

Three From Galilee: A good story well told
By Cenlydia
This is a wonderful book by Marjorie Holmes. It is the second book in a trilogy with the other books being "Two From Galilee" and "Messiah." The author does NOT state that this IS what happened, only that given the history of the time it is how it COULD have happened. She is respectful of the Bible and the ties this fictionalized story has to the Christian faith and this is honored and communicated thoughout all three works. It is an excellent work and I have not only reread it myself, but purchased it for friends. It will have a permanent place on my bookshelf. My only disappointment was being informed that this book (and the rest of the series) has gone out of print.
