Stories of the Bravest of the Brave!
By Mike O'Connor
In 2002 noted aviation author Barrett Tillman wrote ABOVE AND BEYOND: THE AVIATION MEDALS OF HONOR which related the heroic deeds of U.S. Air Force MoH recipients. HEROES, published in 2006, pays tribute to U.S. Army soldiers who were likewise awarded the Medal of Honor. As with the previous book, HEROES is a fascinating, well-written and inspiring memorial to some incredibly brave warriors.

The Medal of Honor story is fascinating not only for heroic deeds but also the somewhat tortured development of the Medal itself. The Medal of Honor dates from Civil War times. In separate chapters Tillman relates representative MoH actions from the Civil War, the Indian campaigns, the Spanish-American War and other 'wars of expansion,' World War I, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and recent conflicts in Somalia and Afghanistan. Over 2,300 men received the MoH; Tillman chronicles 100 of that total. He deliberately focuses on lesser-known recipients while briefly touching on Alvin York, Audie Murphy, etc.

Yet the backstory of the Medal is just as fascinating. Over the years the criteria for being awarded the Medal has evolved. Some early awards, such as those given to an entire Union Army regiment for extending their enlistment, were patently undeserved. Others, such as that given to Douglas MacArthur, were political in nature. Still others, such as those awarded to Teddy Roosevelt in 1898 and, 45 years later, to his son for his actions on D-Day, are questionable. Their actions objectively don't fulfill the 'Above and Beyond' criteria of the Medal. Rather both men's actions reflect Commanding Officers doing what they are paid to do.

Tillman does a marvelous job of weaving the combat narratives and beyond-the-scenes machinations into a smooth-flowing narrative. Reading HEROES leaves one with feelings of amazement, sometimes sadness and pride. HEROES is a must-read for all Americans.

*****
N.B. Hopefully volumes on U.S. Navy and Marine Corps recipients are in the works.

The Reality of War.
By Andy C. Tillman
Barrett Tillmans review of 600 some Medal of Honor recipients brings the reality of war home to even the most jaded reader.

This is war.

Not like you have seen on television, or any movie (not even Platoon). To read page after page of one paragraph descriptions of mortal combat is a very chilling experience. Mens lives reduced to a few words by the sheer number of MOH recipients. A common theme is revealed. Men fight for their fellow men. And they surrender their lives for them. The author documents that depending on war and theater, between 1/2 and 2/3 of recipeints who recieved the MOH did so postumously.

In Tillman's book, the MOH recipients are divided by theater of operation and war. Yet they are remarkably similar men.

The hand grenade plays an important part in this story. Many men were so close to the enemy that they exchanged not gun shots but grenades. A chilling book that will bring the reality of close quarters combat into your living room.

From Publishers Weekly
Narrator Terry Bregy adopts an appropriately boyish tone for his reading of Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt, a Newbery Honor Book in 1965. Bregy compels readers to hear young Jethro Creighton's account of how the horrifying events of the Civil War changed life on his family's Illinois farm, even so many miles from the front lines. From School Library Journal
Grades 4-8--This beautifully written novel offers valuable insights into the difficulties faced by families and communities caught up in the political, economic, and personal upheavals of war. The events of the Civil War unfold Across Five Aprils (Berkley Pub., 1986) in this moving story by Newbery Award winner, Irene Hunt. It is set in southern Illinois where Jethro Creighton, an intelligent, hardworking boy, is growing into manhood as his brothers and a beloved teacher leave to fight in the Union and Confederate armies. Hunt presents a balanced look at both sides of the conflict, and includes interesting information on lesser-known leaders and battles. Of course, Abraham Lincoln is a frequent topic of conversation, and Jethro even receives a letter from his fellow Illinoian. Narrator Tom Stechschulte captures the richness of the regional dialogue and blends it with a careful reading of the story's descriptive passages. Sound reproduction is good, and the hard plastic case can be processed easily for circulation. Across Five Aprils adds a valuable new perspective to audiobook collections that already have works such as Fleischman's Bull Run (HarperCollins, 1993), and Pinkney's Silent Thunder: A Civil War Story (Hyperion, 1999). Students studying the Civil War have much to gain from this recording because it goes beyond historical fiction to show the value of family love and loyalty.

Read it as a teenager, then an adult ...
By John Wesley Hardin
If you asked me about this book before May of '08, I simply would have answered I read it for school 10 years ago in 8th grade, and don't remember a thing about it. This all changed last year. I had a flight overseas to catch. Before I left my home for the airport, I randomly grabbed this book off the bottom of the shelf, not really thinking, just needing something to read on the plane.

What a treasure I discovered! This book is beautifully written with undertones on how Jethro's thought process changes and develops as the war goes on. It's an incredible read, and really paints vivid pictures for the imaginative. During the course of my trip, I read and re-read this book several times, and learned something new every time. I wish I knew what happened to Bill and the rest of the family after the war.

This 3/5 rating is a bit skewered. Most of the 1 scores are from students who do not want to read it and are being forced to, so they're being spiteful. I challenge all of you younger guys and girls to either genuinely give it a chance, or put it away for 5-10 years, and discover it again. It's an amazing read if given a chance.

Nine-year-old Lauren Cooper and her volatile younger brother Winston look up to their brother Henry for comfort and guidance. But Henry's steadfastness starts to crack when he seems to inhabit the mind of another person-a gentle Japanese man who witnessed the destruction of Hiroshima.

As the Cooper children stumble into adulthood, Lauren suspects something about her brother's "illness" that everyone is overlooking. And if she can understand what's happening to him, perhaps everything else-her family, her faith, her future-will start to make sense as well.

Funny, moving, and wise, What Happened to Henry is a powerful tale of a family's struggle towards understanding-and their fight to make sense of the world in which they live.

From Booklist
Pywell's thought-provoking debut features a profoundly inventive plot revolving around a tightly knit family. Henry, Lauren, and Winston Cooper are 10, 7, and 5 in 1960, when their newborn sister dies of SIDS. Henry pulls his younger siblings through their grief while their mother is barely functioning and their father is lost in his work. But four years later, Henry begins to crack, becoming obsessed with a picture of a man near Hiroshima's firestorm. He not only feels the horror that the man, Asagao, feels, but he also begins spontaneously speaking Japanese, and spouting Japanese beliefs in the afterlife. Lauren and Winston struggle with Henry's odd behavior, while the siblings stay close through college and after as Asagao becomes a "shadow brother" to them all. Henry's need to communicate with Asagao in person escalates, leading to the poignant denouement. A powerful novel full of surprises, unbreakable sibling bonds, and insightful reflection on the power of love to overcome grief, by a promising new author. Deborah Donovan

The Care and Maintenance of Spirits After a War
By Amazon Customer
Sharon Pywell has accomplished the impossible; she has written a book about transcendence that is poignant and often hilarious, open to all wounds yet filled with hope. She erects finite boundaries in order to trample them: images from Japan seep into a New York household, past oozes into present, death into life, insanity into revelation, infidelity into pure devotion. She rejects easy answers in favor of paradox, synthesis and higher truth.

Pywell's main character often feels the pull of opposite impulses, such as her bitter rivalry with one brother, her blind love for the other. Pywell has done a masterful job at describing the attraction of metaphysical questions, combined with doubt about the answers. I am so grateful for Pywell's humorous portrayal of young Lauren Cooper puzzling over the edicts of her catechism teacher, Sister Leonarda.

Pywell's prose is fresh and vivid as the latest gossip, so steeped in ambiguous detail that it could be poetry, albeit very fun and readable poetry. Her characters are so true and so vulnerable that you wish you could hug them; they tug at your feelings like old songs. Women hide behind crusty attitudes, plays for attention and acts of service; men find safety behind slide rules, testosterone and care-giving, and yet all seek redemption through love.

Indeed, this is one of the most searching explorations of the nature and power of love that I have ever read. _What happened to Henry?_ is a must-read for anyone who suspects that love and salvation are related, as well as for anyone who longs for a new voice on the literary scene.

A compelling, beautifully crafted, life affirming novel! Simply superb!!
By Jana L.Perskie
Sharon Pywell's beautifully crafted debut novel, "What Happened To Henry," chronicles the lives of the three extraordinary Cooper siblings from early childhood through adulthood in 1960's post WWII USA. The book's recurrent theme is the powerful, haunting memory of the devastation at Hiroshima, in the aftermath of the atomic-bomb drop of 1945 that brought immediate or horrifically lingering death to more than 140,000 people. The A-bomb, which the Japanese called "pika-don," did not simply kill, maim and injure masses of people and destroy buildings. It obliterated all the living and the community of the living. It devastated society and wrecked havoc on the environment. This year, 2005, is the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima's and Nagasaki's annihilation. The subject is introduced into the narrative in a subtle manner, and gives one pause to reflect on the impact the atomic bomb had, not only on Japanese and US children, but on children everywhere, who grew up in the days of the Cold War, with threats of nuclear missile attacks as a backdrop to their lives.

The Coopers are a middle class family of devout Catholics who live in a the suburban community of Eleusis, NY. It is 1960. Lauren, the middle child, is having a problem getting through First Communion. She is the only nine year-old in the class. A "First Communion failure," this is the third time she repeats the curriculum but will hopefully receive the sacrament soon, along with her seven year-old classmates. She had been foiled on her initial attempt by multiple streptococcus infections. Her fate was sealed on her second shot by a bowl of salted peanuts she found lying on the kitchen table. Lauren had a momentary lapse of memory about fasting before receiving the host. Her older brother Henry witnessed her downfall, so she couldn't lie. Thus, she continues to study catechisms with the stern, feisty, ever practical Sister Leonarda, hoping to succeed and get it over with. Lauren really struggles with the logic and veracity behind transubstantiation, martyrdom and heaven, especially when the sister makes pronouncements like, "Those who believe that they can evade judgment are generally struck down by trucks or disease before they can receive the sacrament of Extreme Unction." Lauren has good reason to question these beliefs, as the reader will discover.

Winston, the youngest Cooper is seven and a little hellion...or perhaps "tyrant" would be a more apropos description. When his wishes, which become his commands, are not fulfilled, or when his feelings are hurt, he dismantles everything in sight, and is quite effective in his destruction skills, being mechanically and electrically inclined. Winston compulsively takes the protective coverings off wall sockets and rewires everything. He is always absconding with his father's tools, like the hacksaw he smuggled into his bedroom to saw his bed's headboard in half. Annie Cooper, the children's mother, is distraught by her son's behavior and can never quite understand what possesses him. Warren Cooper, the family's father, an engineer working in the Research and Development department of a large defense corporation, admonishes his son for using a hacksaw to cut wood. He is upset that his son picked the wrong tool for the job. Lauren bitterly complains to older brother, Henry, that Winston gets away with murder.

Twelve year-old Henry is the family's pillar of strength and stability. Lauren adores him and depends on him emotionally for his wisdom, strength of character and level-headedness. She has a recurring nightmare in which she watches a man in a cornfield shoot Henry. The dream always ends with Lauren holding his body in her arms, thinking, "...I don't know the way." Even the inscrutable Winston responds to his big brother. Other than being kind, insightful and creative, Henry is a normal pre-adolescent boy, who is into building model fighter airplanes from WWII. His collection hangs in his room in simulated fight patterns. He is a bit obsessed, however, with looking at the photographs in a library book entitled, "Disaster, Disaster, Disaster," which graphically documents the horrors of the Hiroshima bomb! The picture he is most fascinated by is of a Japanese man with his arms outstretched, running toward a terribly burned woman - toward the blazing inferno caused by the bomb, not away from it.

In 1958, when the Cooper kids were ten, seven and five respectively, a terrible tragedy hit the family hard. By December, 1962, everyone had seemingly recovered from the emotional aftermath of the event which left them bereft. The Cooper method of getting their lives back on track is invariably the same - never discuss the problem, and repress, repress, repress. The three sibling, who were so looking forward to Christmas, have their holiday marred when Henry receives a powerful electric shock from an overheated record turntable and is rushed to the hospital. He sleeps for three days and awakens, seemingly none the worse for wear. Lauren learns differently, however, shortly after he returns home.

Henry is experiencing a bizarre phenomenon - he has access to the thoughts of Suriya Asagao, a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. Asagao died of leukemia several months afterwards, in 1946. Henry feels as if he is inside the man's head. Asagao, in fact, is not a man, but a spirit who wanders in the Void, in the Kingdom of the Dead. He suffers from the unbearable pain of loss. He searches continually for his beloved wife, Ishiru, the women he runs toward in the disaster book photograph. Asagao is unable to release himself from limbo until he lets go of Ishiru's memory. Meanwhile, Henry begins to speak Japanese, his syntax takes on foreign inflections, he acquires new knowledge about Japanese culture and Buddhism without studying these subjects, and is able to describe, in great detail, life in prewar Hiroshima.

The novel poignantly portrays the siblings banding together to protect Henry and Asagao, (who becomes like an invisible adopted brother to them), from being discovered. They know from prior experience that when they answer psychiatrists' questions truthfully, Henry is taken away to spend time in an institution and medicated until he can no longer think clearly. The reader follows the three Coopers through college, marriage and children in this extraordinary and most unusual tale.

Ms. Pywell's prose is extremely lyrical. This is truly a beautifully written novel. The author ably pulls off Henry and Asagao communing in the spirit world to such an extent that their relationship becomes more realistic than any diagnosis of pathological illness. The characters of the three siblings are exceptionally well drawn, and the emotional ties that bind them together are complex and moving. "Whatever Happened To Henry" is an absolutely compelling, life affirming book about family ties, love, faith, the enduring quality of history - and about a repertory dance company and beautiful Japanese religious ceremonies, both Buddhist and Shinto. There is also lots of humor here and I found myself laughing out loud. I also cried through a few pages.

Fellow avid readers, this should be at the top of your TBR list. A definite must read. You will thank me for the recommendation! ENJOY!

a lovely book
By JS
This book is a beautifully written account of a family and the Japanese spirit that inhabits one of the children. While it might sound far-fetched, the presence of Asagao is perfectly natural and is essential. What Happened to Henry is a special combination of great writing, strong characters, and good dialogue. I was sorry to see it end and I look forward to Pywell's next novel.

I'm sorry, but.....
By G. Svoboda
I don't enjoy bashing any author, because I know how much work is involved in writing a novel.
That said, I was a big, big fan of Lawrence Sanders' Archy McNally series. Sadly, Mr. Lardo misses the mark in his continuation series.
How? In many, many ways.
While an originating author is free to make up his own rules as he goes along. In my opinion, a continuation author is morally bound to keep the basics the same.
He cannot take a policeman/friend, (Al Rogoff) and turn him from a well-spoken policeman into a cop who sprinkles his sentences with "ain't" and totally butchers the English language.
He should know that the Pelican's Simon Pettigrew always would address Archy as "Mr. McNally," and never as "Archy." (If you're going to carry on a man's work, do some research if you haven't cared enough previously to read the first author's books.)
Connie was good enough for Lawrence Sanders, but apparently not for Mr. Lardo.
Maybe I'm nitpicking but Mr. Lardo's A.M. just isn't as interesting as Mr. Sander's A.M. His dialogue isn't as clever. Continuation series books are, in the final analysis, clones of the original books. Mr. Lardo falls short, far short, in this area. None of the characters ring true.
His plots actually are fairly good, but not good enough to make up for his shortcomings. It's only because of my high regard for the Archy McNally series that I read Mr. Lardo's books. Since it's been around six years since the last A.M. books, I'm guessing that others feel as I do. RIP, Archy McNally.

A Good Read!
By Armchair Interviews
Vincent Lardo continues to write "in the style of" Lawrence Sanders who create the Archy McNally series. Archy McNally is a Palm Beach private investigator who works out of his wealthy father's law offices.

Archy and the Palm Beach A list are invited to the opening of La Maze. Newcomers to the Palm Beach scene, Matthew Hayes, former carnival cannon ball, and his wife Marlena Marvel, are throwing a party to get in with the "right crowd." Hayes has recreated an English maze at his mansion and the party goers pair off to find their way to the center. But the contest begins only after Marlena recreates her famous impression of Venus DeMilo. But alas, most of the contestants grew increasingly frustrated and not only couldn't find the maze center, they couldn't get out.

Following the maze game, fabulous buffet tables awaited the guests. But the hostess couldn't be found. And then the search was on again -- and didn't end until she was found dead, at the center of the maze.

How could she get there past all the contestants? Who killed her? When? Why? Matthew hired Archy on the spot to find answers. But as he digs in, there are only more questions. Then the most promising suspects, those with the best apparent motives, begin to die, and good leads turn to dead ends.

The characters are believable and include those you'll love to love -- and those you'll love to hate. One caution, if you really care, be prepared to take notes and create diagrams to try to keep up with who is sleeping with who -- and who slept with who, but isn't any more.

Armchair Interviews says: Readers who like fast-paced easy reads will enjoy McNally's Bluff. There are plenty of clues, but many of the suspicions the reader will share with Archy will turn out to be unfounded and red herrings.

Awesome series, but this is only the first two books
By erinthedreamer
When I saw the title "The Quinn Brothers" I thought it would include all four of the books so I was amazed at the price. When I purchased it I was sad to see it was only the first two. Oh well still a great price even for just two books, I just thought I would let others know in case they thought the same as I.

**EDIT**

It looks like they now advertise that this is just the first two.

The Quinn Brothers
By Kindle Customer
This is a great 2 in 1 book I like how it shows the family dynamic in each of the 2 books. Sea Swept shows how even a wild boy like Cameron still is there when his family needs him. Though he acts all rough and tough inside is the heart of a marshmallow. Carmeron thinks he is the tough guy and nothing can get to him until he meets Anna and everything changes for him. In Rising Tides you meet Ethan always the family man with a heart of gold if only he can get Grace to see him that way. He knows what he wants and it is her but with her past hurts she is scared to let him in not only her life and heart but her daughters too.

Wonderful Beginning of a Heartwarming Series
By Terry A. Benedict-Devine
This series (a total of four novels) reflects the story of the Quinn Brothers and the setting is the beautiful harbor of Maryland's coastal Chesapeake Bay - Cameron, Ethan, and Phillip (Seth came later after Stella had died). Not blood brothers, but broken, sad and damaged boys all adopted at different times by Ray Quinn and his wife, Stella. The first novel, Sea Swept, tells Cam's story and takes us through his journey with the social worker, Anna Spinelli, assigned to the case of Seth DeLauter, the boy Cam's father took in off the streets before he died in an auto accident. The family focus of the men and the plot that develops through each of their personalities is amazing. They all work together to hold onto Seth (and abide by their father's dying wish) even though there is mystery and question as to his heritage relating to their father. They restructure their lives and begin their boat building business - "Boats by Quinn" - and through it all discover that the bond they have with each other that was started by Ray Quinn, is only stronger as time goes on. This is a fantastic story and each novel tells the story of another brother. Rising Tides takes us through Ethan's life and tortured past and his struggle to continue on, help bond and accept Seth in his life and try to dismiss the ghosts of his past in order to make a future. Grace Monroe and her daughter Aubrey are the keys to unlock his struggle, however, he has a very difficult time accepting them into his life. Grace is a very strong and lovable character and the reader is just pulled right into the whole family so much that you feel a very big part of their closeness. Go out and begin reading - you will not be disappointed!

My favorite of Lynn's short stories
By Katie Mc P
First, to those who might be confused, this book is the same short story that Lynn Kurland wrote for the anthology called Tapestry. That book has four short stories by four different authors... Here we get to have Lynn's story as a stand-alone book. But this is why it is so short compared to her regular novels.

That said... this is one of my favorite of Lynn's books, despite the shortness of the story. Lynn shared on her bulletin board once that Jason de Piaget of Artane (Robin's youngest son) was one of her favorite characters, and I have to agree. If you've read From This Moment On and This Is All I Ask already, then you already know (and probably love) Jason. Here you get to read his own love story. And believe me... you'll love him even more in this story for his mix of tenderness and gruffness, and his ability to see past Lianna's outer scars and fall desperately in love with her.

PS... for those of you who are Kendrick fans, you'll get to see quite a bit more of him in this book as well. He and Jason's brotherly relationship seems much along the same lines as Robin and Nick's (from If I Had You)... lots of love hidden behind tons of teasing and thrashing. It's fun to read. :-)

Another Lynn Kurland Delight
By Hope Chastain
The Lady Lianna, orphaned and bearing the scars of smallpox, is convinced no one will ever love her. If she is to wed, it will be someone of the King 's choosing, and her feelings won't enter the equation. And then along come a couple of DePiaget brothers, and change everything...

To Kiss in the Shadows
By Muriel Kanarek
I love all Lynn Kurland Artane family books! My only
complaint is that this was only a novella, not a novel.
I have read them all in paperback. I am now reading
them in e-book format. I hope she decides to write more about this family.

Unlike other books, I see the hand of a teacher here, starting from the beginning and guiding you through it, all the while encouraging you and making the book readable, light and even pleasant on the very serious subject of the stock market. This is my personal opinion.

Very Good summarized
By Jorge Aleman
Liked reading it. She is very good to cover all the general points of the Stock market and trading in a shorts book.
Has a lot of precise details also, like web pages locations, and explanations of what's good and what's not.
