Chapter 1

Sandy sat up in bed and looked at the clock. Quarter to eight. Damn! Last night she'd told Norman she might sleep all day just to catch up. No kids for once, no demands, no responsibilities. But the noise. What was it, a truck, a bus? It sounded so close. And then the empty sound after the engine cut off. She'd never get back to sleep now. She slipped into her robe, the one the children had given her for Mother's Day. "Daddy picked it out," Jen had said. "Do you like it?" "Oh yes, it's perfect," Sandy had answered, hating it. Imagine Norman choosing the same robe for her as she had sent to his mother and her own.

She traipsed across the room to the window, rubbing her eyes to keep them open, spitting her hair out of her face. She looked down into the wooded backyard. He was in front of the crab apple tree, hands on hips, as if waiting for her, dressed in a white bed sheet and a stars and stripes helmet, standing next to a motorcycle. What was this? A kid, playing Halloween? A neighborhood ghost? No...look...he threw off the bed sheet and stood before her, naked, his penis long and stiff. Sandy dropped to her knees, barely peeking out the window afraid, but fascinated, not just by the act itself, but by the style. So fast, so hard! Didn't it hurt, handling it that way? She'd always been so careful with Norman's, scared that she might damage it. Who was he? What was he doing in her yard? Nineteen, twenty, twenty-one, Sandy counted. He came on twenty-seven, leaving his stuff on her lawn, then jumped on his bike, kicked down with one foot, and started up the engine. But wait. It stalled. Would she have to call Triple A and if so how was she going to explain the problem? Hello, this is Mrs. Pressman there's a...you see...well...anyway and he's having trouble with his motorcycle... No. No need to worry. The engine caught and he took off, zooming down the street, wearing only the stars and stripes helmet.

She called Norman first, at the plant, and he asked, "Did it make ridges in the lawn?"

"What?"

"The motorcycle, did it make ridges in the lawn?"

"I don't know."

"Well, find out."

"Now?"

"Yes, I'll hold."

She put the phone down and ran outside.

"Yes, there are ridges," she told Norman. "Two of them."

"Okay. First thing, call Rufano, tell him to take care of it."

"Right. Rufano," she repeated, jotting it down. "Should he reseed or what?"

"I can't say. I'm not there, am I? Let him decide, he's the doctor."

"But it doesn't pay to put money into the lawn when we're moving, does it?"

"We haven't sold the house yet. it would be different if we'd already sold."

"Norm..."

"What?"

"I'm a little shaky."

"I'll call the police as soon as we hang tip."

"I'm not dressed."

"So get dressed."

"Are you coming home?"

"I can't, Sandy. I'm in the middle of a new solution."

"Oh."

"See you tonight."

"Right."

Sandy showered and dressed and waited for the police.

"Okay, Mrs. Pressman, let's have it again." She'd expected, at the very least, Columbo. Instead she got Hubanski, tall and thin, with a missing tooth and an itchy leg. He sat on the sofa and scratched the area above his black anklet sock. Plainfield, New Jersey's, finest.

"My husband told you the whole story, didn't he?"

"Uh huh."

He whipped his notebook out of his pocket and made squiggles with his ballpoint pen. "Doesn't seem to be working today."

"Try blowing in it," Sandy suggested. "Sometimes that helps."

Hubanski blew into the end of his ballpoint and tried again. "Nope, nothing."

"Just a minute." Sandy went into the kitchen and came back with a pen. "Try this one."

"Thanks," he said, printing his name.

Sandy sat down on the love seat opposite. him, tucking her legs under her.

"Okay, now I want to hear it from you, Mrs. Pressman. You say it was about quarter past eight?"

"No, quarter to."

"You're sure of that?"

"Yes, positive, because as soon as I woke up I looked at the clock."

"And the noise that woke you sounded like a motorcycle?"

"Well, I didn't know it was a motorcycle then. I just knew it was a noise, which is why I went over to the window in the first place."

"Now, we have to be very sure about this, Mrs. Pressman."

"I looked out the window and there he was," Sandy said. "It's very simple."

"He didn't ring the bell or anything, first?"

"Why would he have done that?"

"I'm only trying to set the record straight, Mrs. Pressman, because, you know, this isn't our everyday, ordinary kind of complaint. So just take your time and tell me again."

"He was wearing a sheet and he was looking up at me."

"Now, this here's the important part, Mrs. Pressman, and I want to be sure I've got it one hundred per cent right. You're telling me that this guy rides up on a motorcycle."

"Yes.

"And he's got a bed sheet over him."

"That's right."

"Like your ordinary everyday kind of bed sheet?"

"Yes, plain white, hospital variety."

"Okay, I get the picture. So let's take it from there, Mrs. Pressman. Now, you look down from your bedroom window and he looks up. Is that right so far?"

"Very good, you're doing fine."

"Look, Mrs. Pressman, you might not believe it, but this is no picnic for me either."

"Sorry.

"Okay, so he takes off the sheet."

"Right."

"And he's stark naked."

"Yes, except for his helmet...stars and stripes..."

"Yeah, I already got that. So, go on."

"Well, then he masturbated. And that's about it."

"You say about. Is there something else?"

"No, he got on his motorcycle and rode off. That's it."

"Naked?"

"Yes, I told you that."

"So where's the bed sheet, Mrs. Pressman?" He held up his hand, a hint of a smile showing on his face for the first time.

"I don't know."

"You didn't pick it up when you went out to inspect the lawn?"

"No."

"And you didn't see him pick it up either?"

"No, but he might have. Because I was pretty upset at the time, as you can imagine. I might have missed that."

"What I don't get, Mrs. Pressman, is how come you watched the whole thing. I mean, you could have called us right off. We might have been able to get over here in time."

"I was scared, I guess. I just don't know,"

"How about a make on the motorcycle?"

"It was chrome."

"Come on, Mrs. Pressman. You can do better than that. Was it this year's model, a 1970? Or would you say it was five to ten years old?"

"I don't know. They all look the same to me."

He clicked the pen closed, stood up, and handed it to Sandy.

"Keep it," she said, "I'm sure you'll need it."

"Thanks. Say listen, what about the dog? Your husband said you have a dog."

"We do, a miniature schnauzer, Banushka. But he slept through it."

"You're sure he was white?"

"Who?"

"The guy -- the exhibitionist."

"Oh, yes."

"Because a lot of these mixed races can look almost white."

"No, he was white. Like you."

He sighed. "Well, you haven't given me much to go on, Mrs. Pressman."

"I'm sorry."

"Look, if you remember anything else, no matter how small, give me a call, okay? And in the meantime I'll do my best."

"That's all anyone can ask for, sergeant..." Sandy paused. What the hell was his name?

"Hubanski. U-ban-ski. The H is silent."

"I'll remember that. Good-bye...and thank you."

As Hubanski was walking down the front steps Sandy called, "Oh, sergeant?"

He turned. "Yeah."

"I just remembered...he was left-handed."

"Hubanski didn't believe me," she told Norman that night over chicken piquant. She was really pissed about that.

"It is an incredible story, Sandy."

"You think I know that?"

"How come we're having chicken tonight? It's Monday, we always have chicken on Wednesdays."

"I didn't stop to think. I just defrosted the first thing I saw when I opened the freezer. Besides, with the kids away, what's the difference?"

"The difference is that I count on chicken on Wednesdays, the way I count on pot roast on Thursdays and some sort of chopped meat on Tuesdays. I had chicken salad for lunch."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"Did you get this recipe from your sister?"

"No, from Elegant but Easy."

"Not bad. You should have browned it first, though."

"It's a pain to brown chicken. That's why I made this one, you don't need to brown it first."

"It would look more appetizing if you did, next time."

"So close your eyes!"

"I'm just making a suggestion, San. No need to get so touchy about it,"

"Who's touchy?"

Norman took off his glasses and wiped them with his dinner napkin. "I think what you need is new interests, especially now, with the kids away for the whole summer."

Was he doubting her story too? "I have plenty to do. There's the new house and besides that, I'm in going to read. I'm going to do the classics. I told you that."

"But you need to get out of the house more, to mingle," Norman said.

"I don't need to be around people all the time."

"You lack self-confidence."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I'm trying to tell you, trying to help you, if only you'll let me."

"Do you want more rice?"

"Yes, thank you. I think The Club is the answer, San."

"Oh, please, Norm, don't start that again."

"I thought we agreed that as soon as the kids left you'd give it another try."

"Look, I told you when you joined that it wasn't my thing...that I didn't want any part of it. So don't expect...don't ask me to..." She got up to clear away the dishes.

"Look at your sister," Norman said.

"You look at her."

"Four years older than you."

"Three and a half, but who's counting?"

"She loves The Club, practically lives there."

"She was always the family athlete."

"Tan and firm, in terrific shape."

"I failed gym in eighth grade, did you know that?" She put a plate of cookies on the table and set two cups of cold water, with tea bags, in the new microwave oven.

"You're not in the eighth grade any more, Sandy." He took a bite of one of the cookies. "Pepperidge Farm?"

"No, Keeblers." The microwave pinged and Sandy carried the teacups to the table. "Myra got straight A's in gym, all the way through school. She won letters. She was a goddamned cheerleader!"

"You ought to learn to do more with the microwave than just heat water."

"I don't like gadgets."

"Because you lack self-confidence."

"What does self-confidence have to do with the microwave?"

"What do gadgets have to do with it?"

"I tried The Club, Norm. I took two golf lessons and two tennis lessons and I was awful. I just don't have the aptitude, the coordination."

"Don't give me that shit, Sandy. You could be as good as most of the girls if you'd make the effort." He crunched another cookie. "Why don't you have your hair done...buy yourself something new to wear...you used to look terrific yourself."

"Jesus, you sound like my mother now."

"So she's noticed too?"

"I've been sick, Norm!"

"That was months ago. That's no excuse for now."

Sandy went to the sink and turned the water on full blast.

"I guess I'll walk Banushka," Norman said.

"You do that!"

"Oh, San, for God's sake." He tried to put his arms around her but she brushed him away. "You're so damned touchy these days," he said, "I can't even talk to you any more."

Any more? Sandy thought. But she didn't say it.

As soon as she heard the back door close she picked up a plate and flung it across the kitchen. It smashed into tiny pieces. She felt better.

I've been wanting to read Wifey for years and finally got around to it. Just like all of her other books I read growing up, I was once again impressed with Judy Blume's unique way of keeping the reader captivated. Great, great book!

People magazine reporter Birkbeck offers little insight in this muddied look at Robert Durst, the eccentric New York real estate heir suspected in the 1982 disappearance of his troubled wife, the former Kathie McCormack. Although investigators had circumstantial evidence against him, including statements about long-term physical and mental abuse, Durst was never indicted. In 1999, after receiving new information, the New York State Police opened a new investigation into the case. Durst proved elusive until he was arrested in Galveston, Tex., for murdering his neighbor. After making bail, he disappeared, and police determined he'd impersonated a deaf-mute woman in order to rent apartments there and in New Orleans before finally being apprehended in Pennsylvania for shoplifting. Durst goes on trial in Texas in September, but the investigation into Kathie's disappearance remains stalled. Birkbeck is attuned to the subtle conflicts among the Durst family, Kathie's family and the police and district attorney's office, which scuttled the original inquiry. But Birkbeck's breathless prose ("Kathie was clearly on a downward spiral, a 747 that had lost its engines") almost buries these moments of clarity. He relies on unnecessary digression (such as Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro's troubles); tinny recreated dialogue; and nasty portrayals. He paints the NYPD detectives as boors, the Dursts as coldhearted robber barons and Kathie's supporters as trashy hangers-on. This voyeuristic true-crime may "dish the dirt" on Durst, but it makes for prurient reading.

The Murder Mystery That Never Ends!

Matt Birkbeck's writing style is not your usual 'whodoneit'. He writes with passion and grace, putting you right in the driver's seat on every page. I became aware of the Kathie Durst case through the ABC special "Vanished" and Cynthia McFadden's excellent reporting. I was one of the people who transcribed the interviews at the time and became totally caught up in the story. I would have never dreamed a few years later that the central character in the case, Bobby Durst, would end up going on trial in Texas for a totally different murder, and then found innocent! As I write this, he is now out of jail and living in a highrise apartment a free man. No one could make this up!

The book offered me valuable information that I had not heard before. Until tonight, after reading it in one sitting, I did not know Kathie Durst's best friend Gilberte, had a secret life of her own. I remember being reduced to floods of tears during her interview on the ABC special, and wishing I had a friend who cared that much about me. After reading this book, I now feel thankful I don't have such friends. Read the book and you'll understand what I mean.

Each person connected with the case (Police, family, friends, etc) are well-defined and sympathetic. It would be so easy to point fingers and say: If the Police had handled this case right from the onset, someone would have been arrested and tried for her disappearance and/or murder. But you can't point fingers. Based on the information at the time of Kathie's disappearance, the Police were under the false impression she had returned to Manhattan and had been seen alive after she left her home with Bobby that night. Then there is Susan Berman, his close friend. There are books out on her life and murder well worth reading. She's a whole other story. Another sad child of wealth.

This is one of those incredibly sad stories of pretty girl marries rich boy and does not live happily ever after. You think; If they had only kept the little store upstate everything would have worked out. Who is to blame? A young boy who is traumatized seeing his mother kill herself? A rich family who enables him in everything he does, even though they know he needs help? It reminds me of the Ira Einhorn murder case where he kills his pretty, bright girlfriend and almost gets away with it for years and years. He, too, is enabled by a member of a wealthy family who sends him money to live in Europe, knowing full well he killed her.

The book was written before the trial in Texas and before he was found innocent, so if you are not familiar with the case to-date, you're left hanging. Somehow I have a feeling we have not heard the last of Robert Durst. He will either live out the rest of his life in seclusion or will jump off a roof somewhere like his mother did. This story is not going to have a happy ending. It's an excellent read. Mr. Birkbeck is quite a writer.

Masterful Writing About An Intriguing Case

This is NOT just another true crime book. Matt Birkbeck can really tell a story and his writing style is excellent. He skillfully portrays a cast of real life characters who are affected by Robert Durst, a super wealthy, eccentric and evil man. Kathie Durst, his pretty wife went missing in 1981. Her body was never found. Ironically, she was planning to divorce her husband when she vanished. Some 20 years later, a raggedy-looking Durst was picked up for shoplifting in Pennsylvania, and detained mainly because a shrewd cop followed his intuition about the strange man. It turned out that Durst was wanted for the grisly murder of an elderly man in another state.
But what else did Robert Durst do, and whatever happened to his wife? We may never know.
Meet some great detectives, a cool private investigator, and Kathie's friends. Like 'em or not, you'll be turning the pages to find out what happens next.
This is a current case so take the time to read it. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
There are so many plots and sub-plots to the story it's almost Shakespearean.

Anita Blake, Animator, is up to her neck with killer zombies

"The Laughing Corpse" is the second in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton, although the focus is much more on her job as an Animator than as the person the vampires call The Executioner. Once again the title is taken the name of a St. Louis hangout for those who like to visit the dark side, in this case a comedy club (helpful hint: zombies do not like to be the butt of jokes). This time around Anita is in way over her head with a whole bunch of serious problems. A lord of the underworld wants to pay her big time bucks to raise someone who has been dead for a couple of hundred years and does not like it that Anita has refused because the only way to do so required a human sacrifice. Her friend Catharine is getting married and wants Anita to be a bridesmaid, which involves wearing a pink gown that has to be altered to cover all of her scars. The voodoo priestess for the entire Midwest has learned how to put a person's soul back in their dead body, which stops the zombies from decaying, and Anita refuses to help her raise more zombies for profit. Meanwhile, Jean-Claude, the Master Vampire of St. Louis who has already put two of his marks upon our heroine, demands Anita start acting like his human servant. But the case Anita is trying to focus regards a savage zombie that is going around murdering families in their home, making her problems with three powerful people who refuse to take "No" for an answer rather inconsequential. Like it says on the coffee mug her boss would not let her have at the office, "It's a dirty job and I get to do it."
I was surprised to decide at the end of "The Laughing Corpse" that it was not only an improvement over the first book in the series, but one of the best horror stories I have ever read (and I read a lot of horror novels). There is a lot going on her, but Hamilton weaves the various cases, most of which would have sustained an entire novel, into a coherent narrative. I really was surprised when everything came together in the end. Hamilton has a much surer sense of her character this time around and I have every reason to believe that future novels in the series will be at least as good as this way. These books deserve their reputation and popularity if the rest are any where near as good as "The Laughing Corpse."
Big Time Warning: this is a gruesome book. Younger readers of "The Laughing Corpse" are going to be upset by several of the scenes, especially when Anita investigates the bloody crime scenes and the climatic encounter. I read these sections in the light of day and they were still disturbing. Those who come to this series because of their love for Buffy the Vampire Slayer need to be told that this is a much darker world where the violence is brutally horrific and not beautifully choreographed. These books are much more intense. If they made this into a film it would give "The Exorcist" a run for its money. Remember, you were given fair warning.

Can't get enough of Anita Blake!

THE LAUGHING CORPSE is the second novel in the Anita Blake series. The action is nonstop. The humor is sharp as a wooden stake. The vampires are (...). The romance is as hot as a date in Hell. And Anita is the girl of my dreams. My next date with her is in CIRCUS OF THE DAMNED. Can't wait!

Ever wonder what the United States would be like with vampires and shapshifters? Where vampires are treated as living people and a person could be tried for murder when they staked the undead. Where the disease known as lycanthropy can make a regular person howl viciouly at the full moon and crave warm human flesh. And a woman known as an animator makes a living off of raising the dead...as in zombies. If you've ever wondered if the supernatural could be natural then I would encourage you to read this book and the other books of the Anita Blake series. Especially those who love blood, guts, gore, and a heroine who's tough enough to take on the whole supernatural world that Laurell K. Hamilton has created.

Action like the pulp magazines of yesteryear

I have never been disappointed in a Max Allan Collins novel. The Iowan is a capable writer who also has several mystery and adventure series under his belt. This venture simply adds to his reputation.
His novelizations resonate well with the source films and yet are enough different to warrant handing over a few bucks. You get more than a sorry re-hash of the movie; you get a great story teller who backgrounds you and spins a yarn as complex and compelling as anything on the screen.
The pace in book version *The Scorpion King* is wildly frenetic. Action is fast and furious, and enemies fall by the hundreds. Yet it's a fun ride. Mathayus is more fully developed as a character, albeit an action character. Mr. Collins gives Mathayus enough brains and brawn to get into, and out of, trouble. Plus Mr. Collins pays gentle homage to the first of the fictional warrior kings, Conan the Barbarian.
What a sequel! Conan the Barbarian meets The Scorpion King. . .
Highly recommended.

Super Good/Great!

This book was great. Everything to make me want to see the movie. Adventure, Action, Comedy, A little bit of romance--yes, it was a great book. Completely orginal story. Frankly, I thought it would [be bad]. I thought how stupid, The Scorpion King? The only reason I was sightly intrested in it was because The Rock starred in it and it was kind of a Mummy Movie. Let me say, if the movie is anything like the book, it could possibly be the best movie in the Mummy series. This book is worth your time, you cannot be dissapointed, if you like the Mummy stuff.

This book isn't bad, it follows the movie pretty well. But it doesn't give huge insights into anything, which is what I'd hoped for.
Young men will probably enjoy it well enough. For others that aren't complete die hard fans, skip this and read the Mummy books by the same author instead.

Excellent soap opera mystery

I found this book at a used book store and had it on my shelf for a few months. I recently finished it and immediately started the second one. I really enjoyed this book since I have watched soap operas off and on since I was kid when my mom would watch Another World when I came home from school. I must admit that I did figure out who the killer was but it didn't in any way distract me from the story and I liked how the story was resolved. I really hope that the author decides to continue this story after book 4 even though it has been over 2 years since that one was published. I highly suggest this fun mystery to anyone who enjoys a down to earth main character who is learning to date again after becoming a very young widow and who happens to write soap operas for a living.

Two words...Read It!

Morgan Tyler is the head writer for a "Daytime Drama" and finds herself in the middle of a murder. The guy that "gets his" is one that no one sheds a tear over, not even Morgan. At the reading of his will, though, he states in very clear terms that he and Morgan were engaged to be married! This throws her into a real mess and then when another murder occurs, Morgan tries to solve it and ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Morgan is a character that you will like immediately and the way she handles the problems that come her way makes me think she would be a great tennis player!

Good Historical Mystery

In this mystery, set in the small town of Sitting Marsh in England during World War II, residents are not happy when a munitions factory is built near the town. So unhappy, in fact, that Douglas McNally, manager of the plant, shows Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton some threatening letters he has received. When McNally and a cleaning woman are found dead after a fire at the factory, the Fire Marshall rules the fire an accident, which satisfies the police, but Elizabeth isn't convinced, especially when she hears the victims bodies were found inside a locked office. She decides to investigate the deaths herself, but unless she's careful, things might get too hot for her!

This is another delightful cozy mystery in Kate Kingsbury's Manor House series. The mystery itself is slight, there aren't that many suspects and it's pretty obvious who the murderer is. But I read the mysteries more for the characters and what is going on in their lives. Elizabeth is a good strong heroine, although a little too full of her "position" in the village at times. Fans of the series will be glad to hear that Earl is back, but you'll have to read the book to find out how and why! Violet and Martin, are a bit of a cliché as the faithful household retainers, but Kingsbury writes them in such a way that you care for them and actually hold your breath when Martin walks down the stairs, hoping he'll make it. And Martin is involved in some of the most humorous moments in the book, making a reader wonder if he is as dotty as he sometimes seems to be. Housemaids Sadie and Polly show what life was like for young girls in war torn England.

This is a good book for fans of cozy, humorous mysteries.

A fun to read amateur sleuth historical mystery

During World War II in England, the villagers have seen too much change in too short a time to want any further disruptions in their way of life. Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton of the Manor House subtly soothes ruffled feathers of the locals, tired by food rationing, the invasion of the Americans quartered in British homes, and the curfews. Even Elizabeth the great cannot get the residents to accept the new munitions factory run by Douglas McNally.

At the opening ceremony, Elizabeth has the honor of cutting the ribbon, but is taken aback when Douglas informs her that he is receiving death threats in the mail. Shortly thereafter, a fire breaks out at the factory killing Douglas and a charwoman. Following a rather quick inquiry, the fire marshal declares an accident occurred, but Elizabeth wonders in light of the letters whether murder happened. She learns that the victims were locked inside an office unable to get out. Totally connived that murder took place, Elizabeth intends to prove that and uncover the identity of the culprit.

FIRE WHEN READY is a fun to read amateur sleuth historical mystery that pays attention to period detail so that the readers can taste the real frustrations, fears, sacrifices, and hardships of villagers in England during the Great War. The heroine is a plucky strong willed character who watches over her villagers like a mother hen; thus investigating arson and murder in Elizabeth's mind is part of protecting her "children". Kate Kingsbury treats her readers with a charming tale that will send her satisfied audience seeking previous novels in this fine series.

I liked this much better than Berried Alive. I was happy to see Earl return but it was a pretty good conclusion that he would..

I think Ms Kingsbury did very well with this series set in the WW11 with the Landed Gentry and all it's quirks.

Let's hope there is something else as interesting coming from her pen. ?

Tangle of Lies is the perfect title for this book, because that's what Liz Connor's life turns into: a tangle of lies.

It all starts when her father calls her up, frantic because her mother is missing. Turns out her mother has been arrested for a murder committed in the course of an armored car robbery by an anti-war protest group... 30 years ago.

The revelation of her mother's past and identity is just the tip of the iceberg, however. Thefts, a threatened abduction of her niece, and a house fire make it clear that whatever happened 30 years ago isn't over. And two men show up: ex-cop Caleb Adams who tells her he's writing a book about the robbery, and attorney Michael Gallagher, who says he was sent by her mother's cousin to help in any way he can. But everyone has a different agenda, and there's no way to know who to trust.

The unraveling of the tangle of lies is fascinating--trying to determine whether the threats are related to the robbery, or to an inheritance her mother is entitled to now that she's surfaced, what really happened 30 years ago, and who's behind it all.

Liz and Caleb are both on emotional roller-coasters, coming from opposite directions to forge a relationship despite the forces conspiring to keep them apart.

I tend to be wary of books that include a concealed identity plot, because so often it ends up the same, but that wasn't the case with Tangle of Lies. There were perfectly good reasons for both Caleb and Liz's mother to conceal their identities, and the reactions to the revelations were realistic and understandable.

I've been recommending this one.

fantastic suspense thriller

In Santa Fe, high school Principal Steve Connor comes home knowing something is not right with his wife. Steve's daughter Liz agrees with her father something is off kilter. Liz calls family friend DA Robert Adams who tells her to come alone to his office. There Liz meets FBI agents who inform her that her mother has been arrested for the murder of two armored car guards during a hold up thirty-four years ago; her real name is Sarah Jane Maynard. The Feds want her three associates. Liz believes they captured the wrong person, but her father does not seem s shocked.

In nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains, former Boston cop Garrett Caleb Adams learns of the arrest of one of those who killed his father thirty four years ago so he arrives at FBI Headquarters in Albuquerque. He offers his services to Liz saying he is writing a book on the armored car robbery. Incidents occur to Sarah's family and cohorts die, but she insists she is guilty and does not want to see anyone again. Liz asks Cal to help them. They fall in love, but he knows that once she learns the truth, their relationship will end.

This fast-paced investigative story line hooks the audience once readers get over the shock that kindhearted motherly Sarah Jane and her cohorts killed two armored car guards including Cal's dad. The cast makes the tale believable as the strong lead couple struggle to learn the whole truth while a solid support in Boston, Chicago, Kansas City as well as New Mexico enhance the tale. Though many will believe that the "survivors" get off too softly, fans will agree that Patricia Potter provides a fantastic suspense thriller.

Another great Potter mystery

Liz Connor's world is turned upside down when she receives a call from her father that her mother has vanished. Soon, they discover that her mother has lived a lie, and is wanted in connection with an armored car robbery 34 years earlier. When her mother decides to not fight extradition and plead guilty, Liz is enraged and wants answers.

Caleb Adams also has an interest in the arrest of Betty Connor. She used to be Sarah Jane Maynard, a peace protester who got mixed up with the wrong crowd and is linked to the death of his father - one of the armored guards. He relocated to New Mexico after his wife and son were murdered in a car bomb when he was a Boston police detective, but has never given up on finding the four people wanted in connection with his father's murder.

When he offers to help Liz uncover the mystery, he does not count on falling for her. And once they get deeper into the relationship, he knows that the longer he keeps his past from her, the more it will destroy whatever relationship they might have.

Lurking in the background is Tony Woodall, the unknown ringleader of the group who has been searching for their ill-gotten gains all these years, and finally has the chance to get it back, even if he has to kill again. He scares Sarah Jane (Betty) into silence by targeting her family.

Author Potter offers another nail biting suspense that will keep you at the edge of your seat. The only drawback I found was the number of characters and the aliases they used - could be difficult at times to tell who they were.
