The least dark of Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mystery novels to date, "Murder on Marble Row" nevertheless still was a compelling and absorbing read.
Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy of the New York Police is in a bind. Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt has hand-picked him to investigate the murder of wealthy businessman Gregory Van Dyke (Gregory was blown up when a bomb went off in his office); the Commissioner strongly suspects that anarchists are behind the murder, but Van Dyke was also a businessman who had his share of enemies and angry rivals, and the guilty party could lie within that group. And so Malloy, once again, ventures into the world of the rich and the powerful in New York City, thinking that this time, he won't have the able assistance of midwife, Sarah Brandt, because he has resolved to have as little to do with Sarah as possible because of the strong feelings he has for her. Except that the very first person he meets at the Van Dyke house turns out to be Sarah! Sarah, the daughter of the rich and socially prominent Deckers, grew up with the Van Dyke children, and knows that family intimately; and she's determined to help Malloy whether he likes it or not. Almost at once Sarah and Malloy clash when it comes to light that the eldest Van Dyke son, Creighton, has joined the anarchist party. Malloy thinks that Creighton had a hand in his father's death, but Sarah is equally sure that Creighton is innocent, and she manages to persuade Malloy to dig deeper. Together, Malloy and Sarah uncover every secret and scandal that the Van Dyke family have, and come face to face with a very devious and ruthless mind...
Unlike the previous Gaslight mysteries by Victoria Thompson, "Murder on Marble Row, doesn't delve very much into the seedier aspects of New York City during the Victorian period. This installment dwells more on doings of the upper classes, and the Van Dyke family in particular. However, the book was still an engrossing and riveting read, with quite a few plot twists and turns, and enough red herring suspects to keep things humming. Furthermore, I was rather pleased that Sarah's parents were better fleshed out, and that there are hints that the mystery of Sarah's husband's murder will be cleared up soon. All in all, a very good and satisfying 5 star read.

The best so far!

"Murder on Marble Row" has to be the best in Victoria Thompson's series. I have enjoyed each of these Gaslight Mysteries to varying degrees, but this one is flawless. The pacing is perfect; the complex relationship between Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt continues to intrigue; and, most important, the resolution to the mystery is nothing less than brilliant. As another reviewer said, it's frustrating to wait for what seems to be a long time between each book. On the other hand, Victoria Thompson makes the wait worth it. "Murder on Marble Row" is really showing her at the height of her talents, and I can't wait for the next installment. But I know I won't be disappointed.

Checking on their carrion, she discovers the body of fellow ranger Sheila Drury, apparently killed by a mountain lion. Believing the animal tracks and scratches are a set-up, the young woman conducts her own investigation, putting her life in peril as she encounters ardent hunters. Anna Pigeon is a great new addition to the cadre of female detectives, especially since her job as park ranger involves hiking through the spectacular scenery of the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas. Several dollops of ecology and conservation of resources mingle with the murder clues, making this an exciting, almost "good for you," book.

Nevada Barr is really the first mystery writer I've ever looked at, and "The Track of the Cat" is the first book I've read of hers. It's very good, and maybe a little old now since it was published in 1994. However, the time of publication does not matter in this case, for I loved the stark description of the national park where Anna Pigeon works. I enjoy her relationship with her psychologist sister who still lives in New York, and the unravelling mysteries surrounding the death of fellow ranger Sheila Drury and the disappearance of another male ranger. Unfortunately, the copy I had might have been missing some pages right near the end, so I don't know if I went through the entire story. Once again, read this and be enthralled with Nevada Barr's debut novel!

A good first novel with some first novel issues

This is the first book of the Anna Pigeon series and while it's a good beginning, it does suffer from some first-book issues.

The plot line is engaging and goes places I wasn't expecting. That's fairly unusual since I read an enormous amount of mysteries. The setting is wonderful and I felt completely immersed in it. Atmosphere is one of the most important aspects of a book to me and this book has it in spades. You feel hot just reading it. Her descriptions of the Guadalupes are fabulous. She creates some interesting characters with internal motivations that feel like real people.

There were aspects that I did not like so well. I felt like the author was trying too hard at times. There was more bad language than I prefer or than needed to be. It felt like she was just trying to be gritty for gritty's sake. It got a little distracting to me sometimes. The ending felt somewhat forced and out of character for Anna. While some characters were very well done, others were wooden and I didn't get a feel for who they were.

All in all, a good first book in a series that gets better as it goes. If you like your mysteries less cozy and more earthy, this series is a good one. As with most series, the first one just isn't the best of the bunch.

Fun idea: girl detective is a ranger trying to save a few mountain lions. Set in a national park! Not so many characters as often found in murder mysteries so possible to see the outcome. Subtle clues. Slow periods, too slow. Intense struggles, too. Easy, fun read.

Required Reading Impossible To Put Down!

This book was on the list of required readings for a criminal justice course I took but it was actually fun to read compared to some of the dull and clinical readings we have to do. I began reading this book on the way home from the campus bookstore, and could hardly put it down until I finished it. This writer deals with some very technical and heavy-going forensic material on serial killers, their psychology, history and investigative techniques. But he explains things in a very understandable way without talking down to you and gives real case examples for his stuff with identifiable details (which forensic texts often do not.) The references in this book are worth its cover price alone. I am so tired of reading "true crime" accounts with no idea where the authors get their information. This writer tells you the source of almost every major fact or controversial claim in his book. You can go and look it up yourself if you don't believe him or want to know more. And there is material here that no other books on Serial Killers deal with. Great book. Smart and hip. A Fast Food Nation or Black Hawk Down of serial killer books. Well researched and brilliantly written. Going beyond books on serial killers, this is one of the better books outright that I have read this year. Just a pleasure to read.

History, present, and future of serial killers

A lot of reviews focused on the history covered by this book, but what I found most compelling was in fact the second half, which discussed the "formation" of a serial killer.

In the first half, the author goes back a few centuries to uncover gruesome truths of serial killers across Europe. With every chapter, he steps forward in time, narrating the lives and biographies of famous and not-so-famous killers, from Jack the Ripper to the Boston Strangler. Every page delivers a shock, as the lives and practices of the killers are revealed.

If you manage to survive through the photos in the center without passing out at the gore, you'll find the second half even more gripping. It explains how a serial killer develops, how his behavior differs from others in childhood, how he strikes his first victim, and the pattern that dictates his life from there on. There is plenty on the many types of killers and their various approaches to murder.

A fair portion near the end of the book is dedicated to criminal profiling and crime scene investigation. The book closes with a chilling chapter on how to survive if you find yourself at the mercy of a serial killer.

A very engaging read if you have the heart for the gruesome details!

I cannot say much more about this book than the other review, however, I can HIGHLY recommend it. It was by far one of the best books I have ever read pertaining to serial killers and everything inbetween. The author adds a slight comical touch to his writing which makes it a definite hook book, and gives a broadrange of topics covered to peak anyones interest. I have read many books on serial killers and profiling and this tops them all.

not worth the wait

I was anxiously awaiting Miranda and Daniel's story. I thought he was really intriguing in the previous book he had appeared in. But, Truly a Wife was a disappointment. Not enough interaction between Miranda and Daniel and WAY TOO MUCH of the spy stuff. The spy angle is okay, but a little goes a long way. There was page after page of it, when I felt the author should be having some interaction between the lead couple. This story felt rushed. Daniel is out of commission for most of the book and it just seems that all of a sudden, he realizes he loves her. The interplay between Griff and Alyssa in the book leading up to this was superior. Truly a Wife could have been a really good book (because of Daniel and Miranda) if a little more time and editing had been spent on it.

great, with only one disappointment

For a couple that has been sparring through the other three books, you would think that there would be more word-play and action between the two. However, it goes too quickly that they fall in for each other. Their noble intentions keep being the stumbling block for both, however, which makes it amusing and light.

Unlike Jarrod & Sarah's book (Hardly a Husband) which happens at the same time, there is considerable play of the Free Fellows and their missions against France. The mystery behind who shot Daniel in the very beginning of the novel plays throughout and we get our answers in a most satisfactory way.

Pick up all of the books for a quick beach weekend read.

In 1813, though he hates sailing Daniel is at sea near the French side of the Channel working as an undercover smuggler when shots are fired. Daniel is hit; on English soil he is sewed up, given whiskey to hide the pain and travels by coach to attend his mother's annual ball. Daniel's aide delivers the information they gathered to his partners the Free Fellows League. At the gala, his wound opens up. He dances a waltz with Miranda, who is extremely tall and strong so is able to help him make it to the coach. To protect her from scandal, the intoxicated Daniel convinces Miranda, who loves him, to marry him. They do via his connections before she takes him to property she owns.

Miranda tends Daniel's wounds but when he recovers he forgot their marriage. They make love before he leaves to meet with his League friends. Miranda is heartbroken, but refuses to mention their marriage. She leaves him with the papers so that he can choose to acknowledge their nuptials or not. Daniel who fears his love for Miranda ponders how brave his beloved giantess is while wondering who in the Home Office betrayed him on his last mission.

Miranda is an intriguing courageous heroine who freshens up the latest Free Fellows League Regency romance as women, not just Miranda, once again prove more than capable doers. The story line is exciting and is character driven, a trademark of this series (see BARELY A BRIDE, MERELY THE GROOM, and HARDLY A HUSBAND). Fans of the series and the sub-genre will appreciate the love story between the magnificent Miranda and the daring (except for his feelings for her) Daniel.

Catches you from the first page!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look for books that catch me from the first page and this is one of two that I have found in the last 6 weeks. The other is LOVER AWAKENED by J R Ward. HEART QUEST is the story of Black Ilex Winterberry and Trif Clover. They were minor characters in the other Celta novels. I love Celta and these stories are some of my best keepers. I noticed a reviewer wished she wrote faster and I have been guilty of wishing the same thing, however some of my favorite authors are so busy writing more books and more series, they have stopped being the enjoyable reads I expect from them. So I guess I would rather wait and get quality over quantity.

Ilex Winterberry is a Guardsman. He has been assigned to the Noble houses of Celta. Now he is looking for a murderer who specializes in Nobles with unstable Flair psi. He is 45 and he thinks he is to old for his Heartmate. He knows that Trif Clover is his Heartmate, but she is only 20. He also has a touch of precognition and has known for yrs he will die early. So he doesn't want to bond with her and have her die when he dies. Ilex is a virle handsome man and Trif is a beautiful young lady. Where there is a Heartmate there is also attraction.

Trif has been looking for her Heartmate. She has made a heartkey charm which should help her. Working in her family's furniture shop is not what she wants to do with her life. She is an amazing musician and plays her own compositions on the flute, and several other instruments. But she is not so confident that she will approach Passiflora Holm who is the premire composer on Celta. Trif also has unstable Flair psi. She hopes that when she finds her Heartmate her Flair will become stable.

The murderers are taking the hearts from their victims and consuming them to assimilate their flair. Ilex is close on their heels and as Samhain approaches he worries for the safety of Trif. Trif and Ilex are brought togather by some interfereing friends.

I love it. Any time I can journey to Celta and spend time with some old and new friends, it is a pleasure. While I enjoy stories about the Nobility, any Heartmate story is good.

Loved this book

Yet another excellent book in the Heart series by Robin D. Owens.

This was a wonderful story of love not expected and then found. Trif Clover is a young woman who decides she's going to go out on a Heart Quest with a key to find her Heart mate. Little does she know that her Heart mate is right under her nose but very reluctant to woo her. See he thinks he's too old for her (twice her age) and he doesn't think he'll live long enough (has a premonition he's dying soon) but he's got to protect her because there's a bad guy going out and killing those who have unstable Flair like Trif's. When Trif finds out Guardsman Ilex Winterberry is her Heart Mate, well, let's say she's not taking no for an answer and does some wooing of her own, saves Ilex's life and he finally accepts her as his Heart mate.

If you've read the other books, you'll like this one as well.

Heart Quest if full of romantic tension, murder, and mystery. Readers will particularly enjoy how Robin Owens has woven fascinating secondary characters into Ilex and Trif's story. Right to the end, you'll wonder who lives, who dies, and who has been right all along - Trif or Ilex. A truly enjoyable read, a solid winner that will have you eagerly awaiting the next book in the Celta HeartMate series. It's always a pleasure to return to the magical inhabitants of Druida City and find out who will be next to discover their HeartMate.

Great story

Hope doesn't know if she likes Sebastian or not, but when she is with him the rest of the world fades away!

He has two younger sisters, about the same age as Grace. And he is planning to court Lady Elinor, although he can't take his eyes off of Hope!

Plans change; all works out!

Sweet story, but writing is at times a little cumbersome.

I had a little trouble with this author's writing style, but I enjoyed the basic storyline and liked all of the main characters. The story's hero is Sebastian Reyne, a self-made man who has to fend for himself after being orphaned at the age of fourteen. Destitute, young Sebastian must work long hours at a local factory. He pays for his two young sisters to be watched by a neighbor, who then disappears with them. Ten years pass before Sebastian, now a wealthy manufacturer, finally locates his sisters and rescues them from a London orphanage. The sisters - now twelve and fourteen - have extreme difficulty adjusting to Sebastian and their new life, so he decides to look for a wife who can act as a mother to them. He sets his sights on Lady Elenore Whitelaw. She is a self-disciplined and serious-minded spinster who overseas a home for girls and Sebastian feels that she will therefore be ideally suited to handle his sisters. While at society dance in order to pursue Lady Elenore, he meets the lovely debutante Hope Merridew. Sebastian is instantly smitten (as is she), but he rigidly resists Hope because he mistakenly believes that she does not have the background or disposition to make a strong mother for his troublesome sisters. However, circumstances continuously throw together Sebastian and Hope, and he is forced to reevaluate his preconceived notions about her.

I felt Ms. Gracie's prose did not always flow smoothly and the love scenes were sometimes awkwardly worded. That said, Sebastian is an admirable hero with a compelling background and I found his sisters' tale quite absorbing. Also, the author injects some nice humor into the story through Sebastian's friend Giles Bemerton. In fact, the secondary romance between carefree Giles and the tightly wound Lady Elinore, is the highlight of the novel.

This was so sweet and full of emotion. I laughed, cried, and sighed at the story. The characters are fun loving and you want to learn more about. I'm glad I read this. I'm looking forward to more of the series.

As the story goes, author Kent M. Keith was a sophomore at Harvard University in the 1960s when he first wrote "The Paradoxical Commandments," a manifesto about doing good in a crazy, ungrateful world. These commandments are the basis of his repackaged and expanded book Anyway. Since his Harvard days, Keith's commandments have taken on a life of their own. They have been quoted by the Boy Scouts of America and written on inspirational office memos, classroom handouts, and Internet sites around the world. They have even been discovered in Mother Teresa's children's home in Calcutta. Now Keith has stepped forward to explain his commandments and speak to his credo for doing "the right thing." Readers will probably recognize the commandments:

1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
3. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.

No doubt about it--these are provocative and encouraging statements, reminding us that there are no guarantees or tangible rewards for doing good in the world. Each commandment gets its own chapter, where Keith elaborates on the theme with personal anecdotes, famous stories, and advice. Though Keith is obviously a gifted and wise leader, the words and explanations surrounding each commandment often feel like overkill. As in Robert Fulghum's All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, these guidelines ultimately make a better poster than a book. Even so, fans of the original "Paradoxical Commandments" will certainly enjoy meeting the voice and integrity of the man behind the words. --Gail Hudson

About the Author
Kent M. Keith earned his B.A. from Harvard and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and Waseda University in Tokyo. He holds a law degree as well as a doctorate in education. Keith has served in the cabinet of the governor of Hawaii, and has also been an attorney, and a university president. Currently, he is the vice-president of Development and Communications for the YMCA of Honolulu.

Good philosophy

The Paradoxical Commandments are some simple commandments that combine to make an excellent philosophy for living. The author teaches the joys and virtues of doing good things for the sake of doing them, without expecting yourself to be advanced or bettered in any way, and doing them even when it puts you at risk of becoming vulnerable or gaining false friends and true enemies.
Each chapter is just a few pages long, perfect for reading a chapter a night before turning out the light, which is what I've been doing. The result has been countless little situations during the day - choices between good and bad, right and wrong - during which these little "commandments" come to mind.
This is a wonderful read for anyone, especially those who sometimes wonder if even the little daily choices we each make make any difference. The author shows you they really do.

Excellent and Easy read

This is a must for anyone who needs a guide through modern life and its complex emotions. I frequently give this to clients and friends as a gift.
After Mother Theresa passed away, these 10 commandments were found taped to her wall. That is an excellent testimony to the value of this book.

Simple, elegant, and sound advice.

I was given a copy of this book by my wonderful wife Michelle for this most recent Father's Day. I picked it up to skim through and despite having loads of work to do, read nearly the whole thing without slowing down. It is an encouraging and meaningful collection of wisdom on how to align our personal attitudes towards an often hostile environment.
There are ten basic "paradoxical commandments", which start with a realistic, although perhaps overly jaded, view of others. For example, the first "commandment" is "People are illogical, unreasonable, and self centered - Love them anyway". That is the general point to all of these, do what is right anyway.
What is really interesting is the path these "paradoxical" statements took. The author was amazed to find that something he had written 20 years before in college wound up on the wall at Mother Theresa's orphanage in Calcutta. What a surprise it was for him to see these listed in one of her memoirs, knowing that something you wrote was held in that high of esteem by someone as wonderfully selfless as she was.
My personal favorite is the section on "Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable - Be honest and frank anyway". In corporate America, there is often little reward, and much risk in being honest what with the always present threat or perception of politics and other power struggles in play. Yet, it has been shown time and again that an honest and frank discussion of the "current state" is the first step towards growth and development - of people or the business. This brief text gives encouragement to do the right thing, knowing full well the short term consequences may be painful. Kent gave some great examples of this, including being literally fired for one of his presentations which was simply an admonition to improve.
Sure, this book is merely a rehashing of wisdom one finds in Proverbs, or elsewhere in the Bible and other philosophical sources, but it is very worthwhile nonetheless. I recommend keeping a copy on your desk or nightstand for a simple and concise reality check when needed. Do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do, and despite the reality of the world - do it "Anyway".
