From Publishers Weekly
This newest addition to the Kurt Austin series (after Blue Gold) has the men from NUMA ([National] Underwater & Marine Agency) team up with former KGB spies to face down a Russian mobster with czarist aspirations and a zealot's hatred for the "corruption and materialism" of the Western lifestyle. The NUMA research vessel Argo is in the Black Sea for a PR jaunt when Austin spots the overdue TV crew being chased down an island beach by mounted Cossacks. Austin learns from his old KGB Cold War adversary Vladimir Petrov that the island is a mothballed submarine base commandeered by paranoid mobster Mikhail Razov (employer of the Cossacks), a billionaire who built Ataman Industries by taking over utilities and mines sold by the state. Razov claims descent from the Romanovs and is plotting to assume the throne. Meanwhile, when a U.S. Navy sub goes missing and a mysterious tidal wave swamps a Maine coastal town, the NUMA team figures out that Ataman is mining "fire ice" unstable and explosive solid methane in the high-pressure deep-sea bottom. Austin and his oceanographic team join forces with Petrov and set out to foil Razov's plot. Cussler is in top form here, working in a role for Old Ironsides and Czar Nicholas II's crown while throwing in enough derring-do and eco-lore to leave his fans breathless. Coauthor Kemprecos (Blue Gold, with Cussler) adds his oceanographic expertise to the mix.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Deposits of "fire ice," frozen methane hydrate found in abundance off of the East Coast of the United States, become potential hazards of monumental proportions. When an insane Russian mining mogul decides he can use the sub stance to threaten and destroy large areas of major national powers, he becomes the target for Kurt Austin, leader of NUMA's (National Underwater and Marine Agency) Special Assignments Team. Austin and his partner in the fight against crime, Joe Zavala, encounter a band of traditionally dressed and armed Cossacks; an underground bunker of a Nazi sub; and the Russian mogul's assistant, who looks and acts like Rasputin. With its many surprises, constant action, and Cussler's special brand of characters, the book will be just the thing for readers who enjoy fast-paced action-adventure flavored with some alternate-history events.

Interesting Progression
By taking a rest
Clive Cussler has done what some other accomplished writers have tried and failed to do. He started a new series that he co-authors, he has kept the quality of the reading very near that of his own books, and now they have gone from a paperback format to hardcover. The last step is a major one and speaks very well of the care this new series was created with. Other authors have tried the same diversification and they are not worth the soft cover format they were introduced with, and will never see the more expensive binding.
The central organization is the same; specifically NUMA, but the central character and the events he is involved in are stepped down from the more outrageous elements that sometimes turn a Dirk Pitt adventure into something akin to Indiana Jones. The famous bathtub escape comes to mind. The Pitt adventures have become classic in the genre and they make for great reading, they also have had occasion to go over the top at times. Kurt Austin is Dirk Pitt on a smaller scale. Austin collects antique dueling pistols while Dirk accumulates World War Two German Jets, railroad cars, and fantastically rare cars.
The idea of introducing a Romanov theme into a story is a gutsy decision for it has been used countless times, and in the majority of uses has become an overused cliché. Cussler and Paul Kemprecos handle the idea well, and while it is still a bit fantastic it does not cross the line in to storytelling that really is a pretty wild stretch to suspend disbelief.
I don't know the science of the Methane (Fire Ice), but again it strikes me as being credible. These books almost seem to take their cue from some of the countless ships that Mr. Cussler has located in real life, and which history will always owe him a debt. This story has a tragic event, but unlike many of the Pitt series the results are far less dramatic and flamboyant. Austin certainly enjoys the beautiful woman that NUMA scientists seem to have a knack for finding wherever they go, but again it is toned down quite a bit.
Whether on his own or in collaboration with another author, if a book has Cussler's name on it you invariable get your money's worth. He is a great teller of tales, and knowledgeable of history, a combination that guaranties good books. This is really escapist fiction at its best. And for those who enjoy the non fiction work of Cussler and his search for old ships there is a second installment of that book on the way as well.

Can't go wrong with Cussler
By Konrad Kern
See storyline above.
Kurt Austin returns for another adventure that's sure to keep you pumped till the last page.
When Cussler teams with Kemprecos, you get the Dirk Pitt clone known as Kurt Austin. An original character on his own but still as tough as they come. This time around Austin and his regular partners-including Joe Zavala-- must stop a Russian mad man, who claims to be a Romanov descendent, from destroying the United States and becoming the new Tsar of Russia.
I am never disappointed with a Clive Cussler novel. The entertainment value is unbeatable. The subjects he writes about are well researched, as are the locales (Black Sea, Istanbul). Even though the good guys always miraculously win, it's still darn good storytelling.
Highly recommended.

Another great Cussler novel
By R. Aguilar
Clive Cussler is an established author with a proven formula of success in his books. I love the way he takes a historical event, puts a twist on it and then works it into his story. I feel that this particular aspect adds a dash of credibility to his fantastic adventures. The book starts out in Odessa Russia when the Czars family is fleeing persecution from the Bolsheviks. Supposedly the family perishes in a ship while escaping through the Black Sea, but one of the girls survives and leaves the possibility for descendants. The villain of this adventure is a mining tycoon named Mikhail Razov who claims to be descended from the Romanovs. Razov hopes to claim world dominance by creating a series of tsunamis using an unstable methane hydrate compound called fire ice that would wipe out the United States coastlines. This action would weaken Russia's main opponent and leave him free to claim leadership of the Soviet Union and dictate world economic policy. In actuality, I found Razov to be a weak and boring character. His sidekick Boris actually made a better and more interesting villain. It was later revealed that Boris might have been descended from Rasputin himself so I think he would have made a much better antagonist.
Kurt Austin proves to be the same womanizing adventurer on the same caliber as Dirk Pitt. The two are very interchangeable. In this adventure, Kurt works in conjunction with one of his cold war enemies by the name of Viktor Petrov. Since the cold war has thawed out, Petrov is now very cooperative and has a new attitude toward the United States. They make a good team and their competitive relationship makes this novel more interesting. Kurt Austin also has a cast of supporting characters such as Joe Zavala, Paul Trout and Gamay. I felt that these characters needed to be developed a little more, their personalities need to be a little more distinctive and unique. Luckily Clive Cussler had a sprinkling of old familiar characters such as Admiral Sandecker, Rudi Gunn, Hiram Yaeger and Julian Perlmutter that strengthened the story.
The adventure in Fire Ice is as exciting as you would find in any Clive Cussler novel. I particularly liked the way he included the USS Constitution in a firefight exchange with the bad guys. The one thing that you notice right away is that Cussler did not make his usual cameo appearance in the novel. I thought that the officer on board the Constitution named Josh Slade would have provided Cussler with a good opportunity to write himself in but that does not happen in this book. I was disappointed when I first heard that Clive Cussler had written new novels that starred a different hero by the name of Kurt Austin. I didn't even bother to read "Serpent" or "Blue Gold" but when I saw "Fire Ice" at the bookstore I decided to break down and give it a try. I'll have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Now I'm going to go back and find the other two Kurt Austin novels to see if they are just as good.

Not what I remember.
By Myles Moriarty
I read a number of Clive Cussler novels when I was a teenager, and remembered enjoying them. I picked this up as a change from what I had been reading. Yeah, no. Couldn't even finish. There may have been a plot, but the juvenile writing style just dissolved the characters into simplistic, unstable, stick figures with poor dialogue and conflicting actions / personality traits.

THere are a lot of these books in Clive Cusslers' series. I had looked for a title that did not have a co-writer, but maybe I should, or maybe I should try another title, but there are a lot of authors out there.

From Publishers Weekly
"A sick computer can and does infect other computers, but not its operator," claims Roarke, dreamboat husband of New York's hotshot futuristic cop, Lieutenant Eve Dallas, in the 15th installment in Robb's `Death' series (after Reunion in Death). Roarke's theory is put to the test when pedophiles and drug dealers begin dying from a computer-generated virus that literally blows the mind of its victims. It doesn't take long for Eve to figure out that a vigilante terrorist organization with superior tech knowledge is meting out its own form of justice the group even leaves the message "absolute purity achieved" on victims' computer screens. Pinpointing the group is more of a challenge. Suspects could be anyone from members of the justice system to formerly abused children, the latter of which strikes a personal and painful nerve in Eve, who was abused as a child. Readers familiar with Eve's history and the sea of characters brought over from her previous books will be more comfortable than first- timers attempting to wade through this sluggish installment. Despite Robb's smooth-as-glass prose, her latest isn't likely to win new converts to the series.

fabulous police procedural romance
By A Customer
At a fundraiser, Dr. Elizabeth Iverson runs into a former lover, FBI Special Agent Drake McGuire. Seeing him is quite a jolt since six years have passed since they shared a short but torrid relationship; yet to both it seems like yesterday as the heat etched a deep mark on their respective hearts. However, after leaving the gala she goes to her apartment only to find her best friend Julie Parks dead from multiple stab wounds, a homicide victim. The only good thing Elizabeth believes is that her young daughter Allison is staying with her grandmother.

Drake pushes his way onto the case because of Elizabeth. He investigates the murder over the chagrin of the locals, which gives him an opportunity to explore what he and Elizabeth ended abruptly when she fled into the night. As Elizabeth and Drake revive their relationship, which seems stronger than before if memory holds, he knows he must not allow his love or desire from keeping him from doing his job which is catching a killer and especially keeping Elizabeth safe as she could be the next victim. Then there is the question of who sired Allison

HEARTBEATS is a fabulous police procedural romance starring two likable protagonists whose hearts beat as one. However, the key to this fine thriller is the villain as clues are provided by Susan Rae yet like the cops choosing who did it remains difficult. Though the second chance at love family drama is an overdone device, fans of romantic suspense will want to read this tense tale.

Caution -- difficult to put this one down!
By LL
I bought heartbeats because I've met the author and wanted to read her first book. I started reading it over Thanksgiving vacation and had the worst time putting it down! I made my sisters watch my kids so I could finish it.

This is a mix of romance and suspense, which I like. The mystery is strong, not secondary to the romance. I didn't figure it out until the end. The issues confronting the hero and the heroine are also real. They actually have problems to resolve, not just a series of misunderstandings to keep them apart.

If you like romantic suspense, you'll enjoy this book. Just make sure you set aside plenty of time so you can read it from start to finish.

Tense romantic suspense
By Tracy Vest
When Dr. Elizabeth Iverson returns from a party and finds her best friend murdered in her apartment, she turns to former flame Drake McGuire for protection. Drake is in town to see Elizabeth, who he has pined over since she fled his hotel room without explanation six years earlier.

The sparks of attraction between the two fly from the moment that they lay eyes on each other. And neither wants to admit to the attraction. Drake is convinced that Elizabeth was the intended victim. Now, if he could just get her to take it all seriously and not try lose her bodyguard.

Rae penned a quick-paced novel that is heavy on the sizzle and the suspense with an intriguing plot that could easily have become tiresome since the whole love child scenario has been done over and over. Readers will find themselves flip-flopping over who the bad guy (or gal) as this tense drama plays out.

From Publishers Weekly
About halfway through this rip-snorting adventure thriller, a "white-haired man" rescues heroes Dirk Pitt Jr. and his sister, Summer, from death by drowning. That man is revealed to be author Cussler (Trojan Odyssey, etc.), reminding Dirk of "an older version of his own father," legendary oceanographer Dirk Pitt, hero of Cussler's previous novels. Just as the primary action baton is passed in this tale from Pitt Sr. to Jr., readers may note that Cussler's coauthor is his own son. But even if Cussler is beginning to pass on his writing baton, he's doing so with panache: thriller fans will revel in this action-packed yarn of land- and sea-based derring-do stuffed with technical details on matters from biochemical weapons "chimeras" to rocket launches. The villain is a South Korean industrialist working for the North Koreans with an eye toward unifying Korea by ridding the country of American troops, allowing for an invasion of the South. His plan is to aim a sea-borne rocket filled with a combo of deadly viruses at Los Angeles, with clues laying blame on Japanese terrorists, thus distracting America while the North makes its move. But villain and modus operandi matter less than the series of exciting hairbreadth escapes wrought by Dirks Jr. and Sr. and Summer—including Dirk Sr.'s escape from being poached alive in a minisub trapped underneath massive rocket boosters spewing an inferno of flames. There's a slight, nasty gloss of "yellow peril" on the villain and his actions, and it's only the Americans who greet likely death with a grin and a quip, but that's a minor knock on some major entertainment that's bound toward the top of the charts.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Two Japanese submarines loaded with deadly chimera virus head for the west coast of the United States during the waning days of World War II but are sunk before ever endangering the coast. Sixty years later, South Korean industrialist Kang learns of their whereabouts and tests the deadly potion on some animals and a few people in Alaska. When the death reports start coming in, research sends Dirk Pitt, the younger; his sister; his crew from NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency); Dirk Pitt, the elder; and other forces on a race against time to prevent Kang from unleashing the virus. He dreams of creating a frenzy of blame between the countries for such an attack even as he takes joy in the fact that hundreds of thousands of Americans would die in agony. The Cusslers provide a high tide of ocean-based adventure and creepy bad guys. Featuring plenty of intense action, the plot fairly runs across the pages, with even the quieter moments full of intrigue. Lots of historical facts and science thread their way into the story, giving it a sense of realism. Filled with submarines, technical discussions on all sorts of ocean machinery, and some facts about chimera viruses, the novel provides some basic knowledge of bioterrorism. As always, the Pitts remain steadfast and true leaders, and the story leaves readers eager for their next adventure.–Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Booklist
Here is yet another Cussler epic--his twenty-eighth, for those who are counting. And it is the eighteenth entry in the Dirk Pitt adventure series, this one coauthored by Cussler's son. The story begins toward the end of World War II, and the Japanese have sent two submarines to the West Coast of the U.S. They are carrying a lethal new strain of biological virus, but neither vessel makes it to the designated target. Then, in 2007, a number of sea-lion deaths are reported along the western Alaska Peninsula, and birds and people in the area become sick and die, although no known environmental catastrophe or human-induced culprit is suspected. Called to the scene is Dirk Pitt, the head of the National Underwater Marine Agency, and his two sons, one a marine biologist, the other a marine engineer. Their task is to locate and recover the two subs from the ocean floor. There are the usual harrowing encounters, close calls, daring exploits, and--in the end--annihilation of the bad guys. Another win for NUMA. George Cohen

Clive and Dirk write Dirk and Dirk
By James Yodrick
Clive, the senior Cussler, and Dirk, the junior Cussler, have written a rip-rollicking tale about Dirk the Elder, Dirk the Younger, and Summer the Daughter. It's Manly Man Reading when Father and Son write about Fathers and Sons.

Even though I'm being funny, this is a fun, enjoyable book. Cussler Sr. wrote the first part of the book, and Cussler Jr. picked up where he left off and finished the book. The two authors meld seamlessly. There are no jarring exchanges where you can tell that one or the other is writing.

Like most of Cussler's books, dark deeds from the past well up to infiltrate the present. Here, the three folks from NUMA (Dirk, Dirk, and Summer) must foil a bio-plot that has its roots in WWII. It's a little slight, which is why it doesn't get a higher star rating, but at least it's fun.

Even though this is the latest in a long series of NUMA books, each one stands alone. You can pick up any one of them and not be lost. "Black Wind" is no exception.

exhilarating NUMA oceanic adventure thriller
By A Customer
In December 1944, Captain Miyoshi Horinouchi, staff operations officer of the Japanese Imperial Navy Sixth Fleet, informs Lieutenant Commander Ogawa of Submarine I-403 of a change of assignment. Instead of patrolling the Philippines, he is to "escort' a special guest from the Kure Naval Base in Japan to the "enemy's doorsteps". The civilian Dr. Jisaichi Tanaka of the Army Medical College has found a devastating biological agent that will bring the Americans to their knees begging for peace. If he fails on this mission, Japan will inevitably lose the war as the Battle of the Pacific is all but over since the recent fleet devastation at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. However neither this sub nor a companion ever made it to its intended target.

In 2007 a South Korean knows where the subs sank and has plans for uniting his country by distracting the Americans with the launching of the deadly biological cargo on Los Angeles. Only Dirk Pitt Sr. and his adult children Jr. and Summer along with his crew from the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) stand in the way of success.

This is typical Clive Cussler fare starting with a historical naval moment expanded into an exhilarating base for a strong contemporary watery thriller in which the action is everything. Dirk is aging gracefully (my knees hurt just reading about his adventures), but the torch as with the authors seem to be moving on one knot at a time to the next generation. BLACK WIND is an exciting tale that is like all the NUMA novels worth an oceanic adventure trek that takes enthralled readers merrily to the Pitts.

Clive Cussler has left the building!
By R. Morris
When I saw that this was a "Dirk Pitt" book by Clive I was really looking forward to reading it (even though it has Clive's son as co-author).

Well, it turned out not to be that great.

The book started out in the old Clive Cussler tradition of interesting narrative history, that really grabs your attention, then it quickly went down hill from there.

First, it's not a Dirk Pitt book, it's a Dirk Pitt Jr book.

Second, unlike Cusslers past (distant past) Dirk Pitt books where every page is "hang by your fingernails" story telling, this book rambles on and on, interesting in some spots, but slow and tedious in most areas. Better than the Paul Kemprecos "Kurt Austin" collaborations, but far below Cusslers other Dirk Pitt books.

Those familiar with Cusslers style of writing will see that this book was NOT written by Clive Cussler (at least not in total).

The action comes in spurts, there is too much "dead space" between the action, and the interaction between Dirk Jr & Summer is pale compared to Dirk Sr and Al.

The last "true" Clive Cussler Dirk Pitt book was "Valhalla Rising".

All the other Cussler books since then (including this one) have obviously been written in large part by other authors.

The move from Dirk Sr & Al, to Dirk jr. and Summer (his sister) has not added ANY positives to the books and indeed, has taken away the chemistry that made them so enjoyable.

Cussler has obviously turned over the Dirk Pitt "NUMA" franchise to other far less capable writers.

I just wish that the publisher would stop trying to "sucker" Cussler fans into buying the books by simply sticking his name on them.

From Publishers Weekly
The title notwithstanding, there's lots of talk in this compilation and relatively few recipes. Thirty-nine Italian-American actors discuss their childhoods, their careers and their big, happy families, emphasizing the importance of food for their sense of identity. The recipes are all home style and unpretentious; a few come from the actors' favorite restaurants like Da Silvano in Manhattan, but many were handed down through the generations. Accordingly, at times the instructions are a little vague and simplistic for novice cooks, who may struggle with the lack of detail in recipes such as Talia Shire's Thanksgiving Gnocchi and Michael Rispoli's Mussels and Clams Campania Style. In general, though, the dishes are easy, quintessential Italian comfort foods, like Michael Imperioli's Spaghetti Carbonara and Edie Falco's Fettucine Alfredo. The bulk of the recipes are for entrees of pasta, fish and meat, though there are a few soups and vegetable sides and a smattering of desserts. Many cooks will already have mastered most of the items; the book is really for fans of The Godfather and The Sopranos, who will love the actors' endearing anecdotes about washing dishes, adored relatives and eating on set, and who might be inspired to try one of the dishes they recommend so enthusiastically. Doctor from Brooklyn enjoys good Italian recipes
By Evan Levine
As a kid who grew up in Brooklyn, NY, I always enjoyed running over to our Italian friends for dinner - our family is Jewish. These recipes remind me of the old style Italian cooking I used to enjoy at our neighbors and its great knowing what these big stars enjoy. If your kind of Italian food is a can of Ragu then this might not be for you but if you love to sautee garlic in olive and enjoy a real sauce then this is the source for your next meal.

Amazon.com Review
Hard, visual data make a compelling case for the existence of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in this pioneering work by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. Using a nuclear medicine technique called "single photon emission computed tomography" (SPECT)--a controversial step, according to some of his peers--Dr. Amen scans patients' brains to identify various abnormalities. From more than 8,000 such studies and more than 12,000 patient evaluations, Dr. Amen concludes that six--not the formerly presumed two--different types of ADD exist. This book encompasses the full spectrum of Dr. Amen's work: from symptom identification to clinical evaluation, to diet and medication recommendations, to everyday strategies for living with ADD (whether the reader is a parent of an ADD child, or has been diagnosed with the disease.)

No stranger to the skepticism surrounding this topic, Dr. Amen begins with a list of dead-on myths (including "ADD is overdiagnosed") and surprising facts ("Many people with ADD are never hyperactive"). From this intriguing beginning flows a highly readable chapter on the signs and manifestations of ADD in all ages. Dr. Amen's full description of SPECT imaging includes multiple brain scan photos that nicely support his theories. But the most satisfying element of this well-researched presentation occurs in the final half of the book; here, Amen thoroughly explores the biological (diet, exercise, medication), psychological (from personal coaching to psychotherapy), and social support (parenting and school strategies) needed to heal each type of ADD. This book will prove a valuable tool for parents, adult sufferers, and medical professionals seeking practical support for managing this increasingly recognized condition. --Liane Thomas

I was the terror of the neighborhood, failed grade 1,
dropped out of high school after grade 10, then after the
army, 3 teachers talked me into returning to school. A
VERY difficult journey began - hard to concentrate, memory
problems, hyperactivity, and etc. It took a LOT of help,
but ultimately I received a BA, MEd, and Ph.D. I became a
chief of psychology in a psychiatric hospital, teacher,
therapist -- and then at 46 years of age, I was diagnosed
with ADHD. Suddenly, "everything" made sense, as the
disorder was 'classic' to how I had behaved, thought,
struggled with relationships, and etc. MEDICATIONS
comletely turned MY life around (as my wife, friends, and
work associates would affirm) - they don't work for everyone,
but for me, it was like a miracle from heaven. Of course, the
anti-medication zealots will not wish to believe this, but
my experience is like that of so many others I have seen IN MY
PRACTICE AS A PSYCHOLOGIST. When medications work, they
really do a great job. When they don't, the experience can
be very disappointing, and anger can run high. I also
conducted over 500, 1-day seminars in almost every state in
the USA, and provinces in Canada (this took place over a
14 year period). Having said all of this - the absolute
best book in the field, based on my having read scores of books,
articles, and my experiences factored in, is Dr. Amen's book!!!
I have, in fact, cleared out about 80% of all the AD/HD
literature I had, and Dr. Amen's book remains my favorite.
It is the ONLY book I now recommend to individuals who ask
for my opinion, as a psychologist WITH ADHD.

Well written but not trustworthy
By alexgauger
I really enjoyed reading Dr Amen's book, he has a charismatic and uplifting style of writing and unique approaches to ADHD diagnosis and treatment. I purchased this book specifically because I was I was intrigued by the idea of using brain scans (SPECT) to have an objective explanation of the physical manifestations of ADHD in the brain and the biology underlying ADHD symptoms. Most books on ADHD have only a cursory explanation of the biological nature of ADHD and tend to focus instead on the symptomology as reported by those with ADHD. Having been diagnosed with ADHD and in light of questions of the validity of the condition, I was attracted to this physical evidence for ADHD being a true biological phenomena as it would help refute doubts about the existence of the condition.

As much as I enjoyed the book, I started to become suspicious when Dr. Amen began to explain his quest for acceptance among his peers in the medical community. He writes at length of the troubles he had in getting support for using SPECT scans to diagnose ADHD. Specifically, he writes about how so many experts in his field do not view SPECT as a valid tool for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, and he goes on to use anecdotal evidence of when he used SPECT to successfully treat numerous cases of ADHD. Throughout the first half of the book Dr. Amen alludes to the idea that he has this amazingly effective tool for diagnosing and treating ADHD, and everyone else is simply failing to appreciate its' value. He suggests that he has the best methods for diagnosing and treating ADHD and that other experts in the field are failing to provide optimal care due to their closed-mindedness. This type of language from health professionals is suspicious because it is frequently used by quacks; those who assert that their unproven methods are the true best ways for dealing with a particular condition, and that the medical consensus and standard of care are models for suboptimal care.

AETNA on SPECT for ADHD: "Functional neuroimaging such as PET and SPECT has been used to study patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although some studies have shown differences in brain structure or function comparing children with and without ADHD, these findings do not differentiate reliably between children with and without this disorder (i.e., although group means may differ significantly, the overlap in findings among children with and without ADHD results in high rates of false-positives and false-negatives). As a result, SPECT should not be used as a screening or diagnostic tool for children with ADHD. The American Academy of Pediatrics' Practice Guideline on "Diagnosis and Evaluation of the Child with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder" does not recommend neuroimaging studies in the diagnosis of ADHD. An evidence review by McGough and Barkley (2004) stated that there are insufficient scientific data to justify use of laboratory assessment measures, including neuropsychological tests and brain imaging, in diagnosing adult ADHD."

This is of particular importance because SPECT scans are the crux of Dr. Amen's treatment, and the main component of what differentiates his approach to ADHD from that of other psychiatrists. SPECT scans for ADHD are not covered by the vast majority of insurance plans, and according to quackwatch.org, "The Amen Clinics charge $3,250 for a "comprehensive evaluation," which included the patient's history, two SPECT scans (concentration scan and baseline scan), a physician consultation, and a 30-minute treatment follow-up appointment. Follow-up scans after treatment are $795 each." Dr. Amen is charging exorbitant rates for treatment centered on use of an expensive diagnostic tool with no good evidence to support improvements in patient outcomes. Furthermore, unwarranted SPECT scans expose patients to unnecessary doses of radiation.

I have only read this book by Dr. Amen but my understanding is that he (unnecessarily) advocates the use of SPECT in most of his books. From a review of Dr. Amen's "Healing the Hardware of the Soul," Andrew Leuchtner M.D. notes that For each of the vignettes Dr. Amen presents, many psychiatrists would have chosen treatments similar to those he used when confronted with the particular symptoms he describes, based solely upon clinical judgment. There is no systematic analysis of the 45,000 imaging studies to demonstrate how Dr. Amen's approach is superior to treatment-as-usual by a psychiatrist. Thus, there is also no evidence presented to justify exposing patients to the radiation of a SPECT scan and to support the considerable expense to patients, families, and their insurers."

Drs. Bryon Adinoff, M.D., and Michael Devous, Ph.D. responded with praise to the Leuchtner review, and added: "Dr. Leuchter correctly points out the absence of empirical data to support the claims of Dr. Amen. Several years ago, following conversations with Dr. Amen on how to address such concerns, the Brain Imaging Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine offered Dr. Amen the opportunity to submit his analyses of a blinded set of SPECT scans (to have been prepared by the Brain Imaging Council) to determine how effective his technique is at correctly diagnosing subjects. Although this proposed study could have provided support for his approach, the offer was declined. Nevertheless, for more than two decades, Dr. Amen has persisted in using scientifically unfounded claims to diagnose and treat patients (over 45,000 by his own count)."

Dr. Amen has frequently responded to criticisms of his research methods and use of anecdotal evidence, but has seldom provided the data acquired from his experiments for peer-review (the gold standard in medical research). These criticisms go back many years, and year after year he has failed to provide data for review, the one thing that could legitimize his methods for treatment and diagnosis. In addition to his advocacy for unproven uses of neuroimaging, he advises people to use many nutritional supplements with little or no proven value. Therefore as promising as many of the ideas he presents may seem, at this point in time they just may be too good to be true. Dr. Amen has had ample time to prove his legitimacy and his failure to do so raises suspicion about his methods.

I rate this book a two out of five because Dr. Amen does have a very enjoyable style of writing that is fun to read, he is charismatic and I have no doubt that he has excellent rapport with his patients, however for many reasons I do not consider him a reliably trustworthy source of medical advice. Certainly much of the advice presented in the book is valid, but it is frustrating to read a book where you must frequently check if his advice is supported by evidence. Dr. Amen is prone to jumping to conclusions and promoting unproven treatments.

I suggest that anyone considering buying this book (or any of Amen's work) do research on the author. Consider reading Dr. Amen's response to criticism on Quackwatch, where his use of SPECT is critiqued and he presents his rebuttal to the critique. Excellent Resource for ADD
By Sheila T. Carden
This book is an excellent resource on ADD / ADHD. I have been reading and attending workshops on ADD since my son was 8 and he is now 30. I was diagnosed with ADD myself in my late 40's, and now take Adderall. It took me 2 years to find the right medication. Dr. Amen shares suggested medication for the 6 different types of ADD, which can save you time and money in Dr. appointments and trying medications and different doses of medications that don't fit your needs. This book is worth it's weight in gold. My family suffered a great deal because of my son's ADD and the difficulty of getting it diagnosed. I have purchased 19 of these books and given them to teachers, counselors, doctors and parents of children with ADD. I gave this book to the past Head of Psychiatry at University of Birmingham and he was extremely impressed with it. Taking the test to see which type or types of ADD you have is simple and right on the money. I read Dr. Amen's first book "Change Your Brain Change Your Life," and was so impressed with it, I called his office to see if he could see my son. I was told he didn't treat patients anymore, and asked for a referral of a Dr. somewhat close to me (since I live on the East Coast). I took my son to Dr. George Stein in Alexandria, VA (who they referred me to), and I truly believe he saved my son's life. My son is doing great now, and it's because of Dr. Amen and Dr. Stein.

I suggest you tell everyone you know that deals with ADD about this book. It will be the best thing you can do for them.
