From Publishers Weekly
Many of Higgins's thrillers have told one continuing saga, involving the efforts of Gen. Charles Ferguson (head of the British PM's "Private Army") and his staff to fend off various threats to queen and country. Here the timely challenge is Arab terrorism, but wobbly focus makes this a mediocre entry in a generally first-rate series. An attempt on the American president's life leads Ferguson—who alerted the Secret Service to the threat—and his main man, legendary hit man and former IRA enforcer Sean Dillon, to Josef Belov, an associate of Vladimir Putin (who appears in a cameo) and a Russian oil billionaire who's intent on world domination and who along the way is funneling would-be jihadists from Britain into terrorist training camps in the Middle East. Instead of concentrating on the promising terrorist angle, Higgins traces Dillon and Ferguson's pursuit of Belov and his goons, a race that leads to violent shootouts in Iraq and elsewhere. Ferguson takes a bullet, and Supt. Hannah Bernstein is seriously hurt. The story climaxes in a vengeful, bloody foray by Dillon and old sidekick Billy Salter into Belov's castle stronghold in Ireland. Higgins's action has always been clipped, but here some scenes are positively rushed, and there's much that's overly familiar. Still, the author's high-speed narration and the mesmerizing hard edges of heroes and villains alike should sustain fans' perhaps grudging interest.

From Booklist
Higgins has been a best-selling author for decades, but most of his books sound pretty much alike. This one, which brings back IRA enforcer turned British intelligence officer Sean Dillon, begins with a botched attempt to assassinate the U.S. president. Turns out the would-be assassin (who takes his own life rather than be apprehended) is part of a network of villains bent on causing as much terror and confusion as possible. Can Dillon and his American counterpart Blake Johnson bring the evildoers to justice? It's a standard Higgins plot, with standard Higgins characters, and fans of the novelist's previous thrillers will soon realize they are in familiar territory. The Higgins name will still attract an audience of devotees, but younger readers new to the genre are unlikely to see what all the fuss was about. Even veteran Higgins readers may find that too much of a once good thing has become tedious. David Pitt

I read book 13 and a few others by this author before receiving my Kindle as a gift. Now I order the books in the series in order. I like how Higgins books end. They do not continue. He is very adapt in bringing the reader into knowing each characters' personalities without being boring. I love Sean Dillon, Ferguson and each protagonist he introduces. I will read every book!

Fire the Ghostwriter!
By Brad Embree
All of these customer reviews are right on point. Let me say that I'm a huge Higgins fan, especially "Solo" and of course the Ferguson/Dillon volumes. I have all of his books displayed on my bookshelf back home, and whenever I'm home for the holidays i always take out Thunder Point and reread the first act - it's brilliant.

Which is why I'm so disappointed with Dark Justice! I read it in two days and have spent just as long trying to decide if the book even had a plot. Without giving anything away to those unfortunate enough waste their money on this book, there's a teaser on the jacket cover that doesn't materialize - and with the "climax" being so short and underdeveloped i'm pretty sure i didn't miss anything. the only person who "fell" was Mr. Higgins off my pedestal.

Shame on the esteemed author. He has a devoted legion of fans, myself included, and he's now mailing it in something terrible. I've seen cheesecakes with recipes that were more interesting - the First Act Dillon barfight, the revenge-motivating Second Act injury to a key character, and the Third Act convincing of Harry Salter that Billy can go on one more mission with Dillon - one can only hope that Higgins will run out of cliched castles in which to stage his "climaxes," but i'm starting to get the sense that we've seen it all before.

Needless to say, i returned the book to Borders - it has no place on my bookshelf! wildebeist@aol.com

The flow of information is about to be disrupted…

Colin Laney, sensitive to patterns of information like no one else on earth, currently resides in a cardboard box in Tokyo. His body shakes with fever dreams, but his mind roams free as always, and he knows something is about to happen. Not in Tokyo; he will not see this thing himself. Something is about to happen in San Francisco…

The mists of San Francisco make it easy to hide, if hiding is what you want, and even at the best of times reality there seems to shift. A gray man moves elegantly through the mists, leaving bodies in his wake, so that a tide of absences alerts Laney to his presence. A boy named Silencio does not speak, but flies through webs of cyber-information in search of the one object that has seized his imagination. And Rei Toi, the Japanese Idoru, continues her study of all things human. She herself is not human, not quite, but she’s working on it. And in the mists of San Francisco, at this rare moment in history, who is to say what is or is not impossible…

Amazon.com Review
Although Colin Laney (from Gibson's earlier novel Idoru) lives in a cardboard box, he has the power to change the world. Thanks to an experimental drug that he received during his youth, Colin can see "nodal points" in the vast streams of data that make up the worldwide computer network. Nodal points are rare but significant events in history that forever change society, even though they might not be recognizable as such when they occur. Colin isn't quite sure what's going to happen when society reaches this latest nodal point, but he knows it's going to be big. And he knows it's going to occur on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, which has been home to a sort of SoHo-esque shantytown since an earthquake rendered it structurally unsound to carry traffic.

Colin sends Barry Rydell (last seen in Gibson's novel Virtual Light) to the bridge to find a mysterious killer who reveals himself only by his lack of presence on the Net. Barry is also entrusted with a strange package that seems to be the home of Rei Toi, the computer-generated "idol singer" who once tried to "marry" a human rock star (she's also from Idoru). Barry and Rei Toi are eventually joined by Barry's old girlfriend Chevette (from Virtual Light) and a young boy named Silencio who has an unnatural fascination with watches. Together this motley assortment of characters holds the key to stopping billionaire Cody Harwood from doing whatever it is that will make sure he still holds the reigns of power after the nodal point takes place.

Although All Tomorrow's Parties includes characters from two of Gibson's earlier novels, it's not a direct sequel to either. It's a stand-alone book that is possibly Gibson's best solo work since Neuromancer. In the past, Gibson has let his brilliant prose overwhelm what were often lackluster (or nonexistent) story lines, but this book has it all: a good story, electric writing, and a group of likable and believable characters who are out to save the world ... kind of. The ending is not quite as supercharged as the rest of the novel and so comes off a bit flat, but overall this is definitely a winner. --Craig E. Engler

From Publishers Weekly
Gibson is in fine form in his seventh novel, a fast-paced, pyrotechnic sequel to Idoru. In the early 21st century, the world has survived any number of millennial events, including major earthquakes in Tokyo and San Francisco, the expansion of the World Wide Web into virtual reality, a variety of killer new recreational drugs and the creation and later disappearance of the first true artificial intelligence, the rock superstar know as the Idoru. However, Colin Laney, with his uncanny ability to sift through media data and discern the importance of upcoming historical "nodes," has determined that even more world-shattering occurrences are in the offing. Letting his personal life fall apart, suffering from an obsessive-compulsive disorder related to his talent, Laney retreats to a cardboard box in a Tokyo subway station. There he uses his powers and an Internet connection to do everything he can to head off worldwide disaster. Contacting Berry Rydell, former rent-a-cop and would-be star of the TV show Cops in Trouble (and a character in two of Gibson's previous novels), Laney first maneuvers him into investigating a pair of murders committed by a man who is mysteriously invisible to the psychic's predictive powers, and then into recovering the Idoru, who is seeking independence from her owners. Also involved in the complex plot, centered on the bohemian community that has grown up on and around San Francisco's now derelict Golden Gate Bridge, are several other returning characters, such as the incredibly buff former bicycle messenger Chevette, plus a number of new eccentrics of the sort the author portrays so well. Gibson breaks little new thematic ground with this novel, but the cocreator of cyberpunk takes his readers on a wild and exciting ride filled with enough off-the-wall ideas and extended metaphors to fuel half a dozen SF tales. Author tour. (Nov.)

From Library Journal
Roused from his self-imposed isolation in Tokyo, cyberjock Colin Laney enlists the aid of freelance security cop Berry Rydell to investigate a series of postmillennial upheavals centered in San Francisco. Building on the story begun in Idoru, Gibson achieves another milestone in his stunning portrayal of a dystopic 21st century filled with virtual paradises and real-life squalor. A master of the cyberpunk genre, Gibson excels at visually exciting storytelling. A good selection for sf collections.

This ain't your daddy's Sci-Fi.
By Sprydle Mandlebrot
Gibson ,who created the word "cyberspace" and who was describing the "matrix" before Keanu put on black spandex, has kept his position solid as the king of sci-fi. While he'll probably never top his own book "Neuromancer" which is the only book in history to win the Neubla,Phillip K. Dick and Hugo award at once."All Tommorrow's Parties" is chock full of suprises and unites characters from "Virtual Light" and "Idoru" and brings in new characters. The book hits high notes with it's use of cool tech toys and all too human characters the world he creates is a reflection of our own for it is our own his children are our children.Gibson's writing style packs a punch you'll be feeling for the rest of the month because it presents a reality that'd make a Goth kid's website look like disney.com.This book also has more twists and turns than an Egyptian labyrinth and at the end you'll put the book down blink and want to start over again.

Has a sudden (and slightly incomprehensible) ending...
By L.C.
I've been a longstanding fan of Gibson's cyberpunk work since his groundbreaking novel, Neuromancer. This book continues his legacy of well-developed characters from the underbelly of the city. Gibson's virtuosity of prose is best shown in his vivid descriptions of the homeless living in Japan in a city of cardboard boxes.
Gibson's continual obsession with Japanese culture continues in this novel, and any anime otaku (extreme fan) will find many tributes to the pop culture of Japan. His finely tuned attention to detail in the scenes set in Japan made for highly entertaining reading.
In All Tommorow's Parties, we find ourselves once again associated with many of the characters in his previous novels, Idoru and Virtual Light. (Fortunately, the reader is not expected to 'know' these characters, so a previous reading of Idoru or Virtual Light will not preclude your enjoyment of this novel.)
However, by mid-novel, all this talk of nodal points fails to satisfy the reader - Gibson assumes too much of our understanding of the world that he has illustrated for us. Hints and allegations are made as to the significance of nodal points (that these points have the potential to bend the course of human history) but then these hints are never truly realized in any major way at the end of the novel. The novel ends suddenly, with no real feeling of resolution of the action that has come before. (I almost felt as if someone may have ripped the 'real' last chapter out of my copy.) We are dropped suddenly into this ending that does not seem nearly as elegantly constructed as the events leading up to it. Gibson's conclusions at the end of the novel are hardly cut-and-dry -- it takes work on the reader's part to try to understand his ending.
In conclusion, it's a worthy read, however, you may find yourself disappointed with the ending.

Elegant prose poem from Gibson
By G. Styles
Gibson always draws criticism when his latest book turns out not to be the new Neuromancer. But then, it's not 1984 any more, either. All Tomorrow's Parties is a mature work, with the previous pyrotechnics toned down and handled as much offstage as on. And the most enigmatic character bears a remarkable resemblance to the jacket photo of the author.
As I read, I could hear Gibson's laconic drawl reading the words deliberately. This is definitely not a book to speed-read. Can't wait for the audio books version.

Alice Jordan looks forward to moving into The Grey House, an 18th-century residence in a village full of friendly eccentrics. But the change of scenery leads to even greater changes, as she forms a sudden, fierce friendship with an independent young woman named Clodagh-a friendship that will take her husband, the villagers, and Alice herself by complete surprise.

From Publishers Weekly
In this readable, emotionally nuanced novel, Trollope ( The Choir ) depicts a young wife and mother who gets what she wants--the perfect house in Pitcombe, a perfect village in England. But instead of being overjoyed, Alice is depressed until she meets Clodagh Unwin, an imperiously wayward daughter of local nobility. Clodagh falls in love with Alice and seduces her. But when the sexual relationship between the women is exposed, Alice's husband and the Pitcombe citizenry (who had accepted her as a depressed housewife), become less hospitable to the cheerful lesbians. Despite a tendency to stereotype, to recount offstage climactic moments instead of directly depicting them, and to quote George Eliot excessively, Trollope has abundant talents. Her spare, pithy style and resonant dialogue contribute to an absorbing story in which a woman learns to eschew conventions and embrace independence.

From Library Journal
In 1977 Alice Meadows marries Martin Jordan to escape her parents' seedy house and join his glamorous and prosperous family. Her painting flourishes. By the mid-1980s, Alice finds herself with three children, a plodding husband, and a picturesque house in a "much sought-after village" near Salisbury. However, she exists in an emotional vacuum and can no longer paint. Then the local squire's daughter, Clodagh, arrives to awaken Alice to passion and artistic rebirth. The women's affair shatters Martin and scandalizes the village. Eventually Alice rejects eveyone, including Clodagh, and decides to support her children through her art. Because Alice is so tiresome and self-absorbed, most readers probably won't care whether she succeeds or not. The strenght of several minor characters cannot compensate for the tedium of considering Alice's woes.

Passions run high amidst rural idyll-
By Kimberly van Deth
A Village Affair takes advantage of all the skilful expertise of its author in unraveling a tale of repressed sexuality , passion and rejection set in a the quintessential English village. Alice, the mother of 3 well defined and lovable children( all children in Joanna Trollope's novels are remarkably fleshed out )moves with her husband Martin to the "Grey House" a symbol of achievement, respectablity and class , the perfect home in the perfect village setting. But Alice appears to be on the verge of a breakdown from the day they arrive... As we meet their respective families and see the lack of emotion on one hand, and overabundance of it on the other, we recognise the gaping holes that have formed in their seemingly "perfect " marriage. The lack of sexual excitement is the final - or most vital - symptom. The crisis comes when Alice meets Clodagh, the youngest daughter up at the"Big House" who has supposedly come home from New York with a broken heart. Though we are already anticipating loopholes, ready to expose the sham of Alice and Martin"s relationship, there is a delightful shock when Clodagh reveals first her preference for women , and amidst domestic bliss in Alice's home, a preference for Alice too. This is true love for both women, made ragged by the inevitable and terrible consequences for the grandparents, Martin, and in a subtle and open ended fashion, the children. Trollope has a huge gift for presenting every facet of these events without bias or critiscm, through the villagers, the vicar, inlaws and family friends. The reader is kept entranced by the unfolding tale of passionate reaction and despair resulting from a declaration of their affair by the two women. I found this one of the most engrossing Trollope novels with a sharp contemporary edge and a bittersweet ending, that left you wanting to know what would happen next in the lives of these characters. ( and ready to pick up another Joanna Trollope novel!)

A good read-realistic fiction
By A Customer
Even before Alice married Martin, his parents loved her. Alice and Martin share a contented life as she paints and he works as a country solicitor. Over the years they had three children. However, after the birth of their second child, Alice stops painting. By the birth of their third child, Alice seems mentally ill as she sinks into a deep depression.

To get her out of her morass, Martin reluctantly buys the Grey House in the small village of Pitcombe. However, Alice remains unhappy and Martin does not know what to do to help her with her funk. Alice meets and falls in love with Clodagh, and the two women have an affair. Will Alice leave with Clodagh, remain with Martin, or leave both of them behind? In any case, what will happen to her children?

Best selling author Joanna Trollope is renowned for her complex, modern relationship dramas. A VILLAGE AFFAIR will leave no doubt that the author is one of the leading lights on writing daring, intelligent, and entertaining contemporary tales. The elaborate story line centers on Alice's various relationships (not all happy) with a myriad of people. Each interaction whether it is to her spouse, lover, children, in-laws, or her own biological family, seems genuine and adds to the overall worth of the novel. Fans of an authentic plot will gain much pleasure from Ms. Trollope's modern day relationship novel.

Not At All Ordinary
By Wendy Kaplan
Joanna Trollope never goes for the easy way out. All of her books are full of people that are so real, so full of the layers of "humanhood," if you will, that we can't help but feel we know everybody in her books. This is, of course, her very great talent.
"A Village Affair" is, on the surface, the story of a marriage grown slightly stale after 3 children and the predictable daily chores that accompany parenthood. Alice and Martin are settled into a comfortable, upwardly mobile, slightly boring lifestyle. Neither is particularly happy, but neither will acknowledge this fact to themselves or each other.
When Alice's third child, Charlie, is born, Alice, the quintessential latter-day flower child, falls into a deep depression that she cannot shake. As she tries to regain her equilibrium, we are taken back to her earlier years as a university student whose wretched homelife spurs her to seek the life she imagines she wants. Alice's great flaw then, and later, when we meet her several years into her marriage, is that she has no notion of herself whatsoever, but only sees herself as reflected in the mirror of others' approval or disapproval.
Thus, when Alice is a very young woman, the reflected glory of Cecily Jordan, a famous gardener/author, leads Alice to marry Cecily's son Martin, even though she is not in love with him. It is Cecily and her beautiful house that Alice loves--but she doesn't realize it for quite a while. After the marriage, Alice is happy as a young wife, artist (she paints quite well and has a small following to whom she sells her works), and quasi-hippie, her long braid and offbeat clothes advertising her "otherness" to her admiring circle of friends and neighbors.
When her first child, Natasha, is born, Alice is able to keep going in this mold. Natasha is an easy baby, Alice is even more admired as the perfect wife and mother, and things are easy. But with the birth of James, a much more difficult little person, Alice begins to unravel. And finally, the birth of Charlie destroys any illustions she may have had of a happy and fulfilled marriage.
Enter Clodagh, the youngest and very flamboyant daughter of the "big house" in the village. Clodagh has a secret...but Alice doesn't know it for quite a while. As Clodagh swiftly and surely takes over Alice's life and identity, the two begin a quite unorthodox relationship that shocks the village, destroys Alice's reputation, ruins her marriage, and makes her finally, at long last, take a look at herself as a woman and a human being.
The ending is not predictable, the characters are not one-dimensional. There is great pain in this book...and great love. As happens many times with Trollope, I felt that Alice was my dearest friend, as close to me as a sister would be. I could see her in my mind's eye, see her clothes, her beautiful hair, her children--see her paintings, her house, and her garden. I understood completely where she was coming from, even when I despaired of her destructive actions.
"A Village Affair" proves once again that life is not black and white--and that things are rarely what they seem. It is written with charm, humor, compassion and warmth, almost as if Trollope herself despairs of her naughty Alice, but wants her so much to be OK at the end, as does the reader.
This book kept my interest until the very last sentence, and haunted me for days. It brings up as many questions as it answers, and offers no pat solutions. It is just, plain and simple, a story of ordinary, and very likeable, people.

Positive Thinking, Written Goals, Tithing.
By Linda Painchaud-Steinman
If you're a veteran reader of self-help books, you'll recognize most of what you read in "Im Rich Beyond...".
The authors mix their personal story with how-to's for attaining all you desire in life.
Their message is, basically, this: use positive thinking (the affirmation "I'm Rich Beyond my Wildest Dreams" sung to a familiar tune, for example), written goals (they advise that you make lots of lists of the things you want --in 79 cent notebooks--) and Tithe.
The tithing part (along with those 79 cent notebooks) seem to be a particularly important part of the process.
Did I mention that the authors have a website where their e-books and other products are sold?
In any case, as I said, you won't find much new here. But the writing isn't too bad, and, as long as you don't buy cartons of notebooks (or spend too much time at their website), you could spend your money on worse books than this one. Thus, the three star rating.
However, for a really great book on manifesting what you want, try "Write It Down, Make It Happen." The author of that one has no website, and sells nothing else that I know of. She just outlines this system of ASKING THE UNIVERSE FOR WHAT YOU WANT in a way that contains less marketing.

A Real Life Manual For Getting What You Want In LIfe
By Thomas C. O'Malley
I was really lucky to come across "I'm Rich Beyond My Wildest Dreams". This book clearly explains how you can attract abundance, prosperity, and great health in your life.
I have used the manifesting system described in this book to have dinner with one of the most famous personal development speakers and gurus in the world!!! I have used this system to eliminate some serious business problems, such as a really problematic business client.
I'm using this system to manifest more money and wealth in my life than I ever thought possible.
The key is to actually do the exercises that Thomas Pauley and Penelope Pauley discuss. If you want to live the life of your dreams, you cannot go wrong with this book. Buy this book today and start using it!!!
I also recommend that you get Marc Allen's "The Millionaire Course", "Goals" by Brian Tracy, and "Dynamic Laws of Prosperity" by Catherine Ponder.

A Simple Formula That Works
By A Customer
I've read a ton of self help books. All of them offer some good advice, and they often repeat themselves. This book also contains ideas I've read before - but it takes all the new agey melodrama out of the formula. The author gives specifics about what to do to increase your money flow, and doesn't apologize for wanting to "be rich beyond his wildest dreams." I found that refreshing. He calls money what it is: something to have an awful lot of fun with, and also something God given. I was amused to read his comment that this system would work whether you believed in it or not. Well, he's not kidding! I had a "yeah - whatever!" attitude when I started. But after I tried his suggestions, my income started to increase in surprizing ways. I still refer to it often. I recommend it! And check out his website. It's also helpful.

More than twenty years ago, a young American named Carolyn came to the Meredith family farm, marrying Robin Meredith and settling—never quite comfortably—into rural English life. Her name is Zoe, and unlike Caro, she finds something compelling in the Meredith's strenuous, earthbound lifestyle—and in Robin...

Amazon.com Review
Fans of Joanna Trollope's cozy, plot-driven novels like Marrying the Mistress and Other People's Children might find Next of Kin slightly forbidding. Set on a farm in the English Midlands, the book opens with a funeral. The deceased, Caro Meredith, is (or rather, was) a Californian, a lost soul who ended up on Tideswell Farm by chance, having married into the taciturn, proud Meredith clan. Her funeral finds her husband, Robin, depressed; her twentysomething daughter, Judy, furious at the world in general and at her father in particular; and her brother-in-law, Joe, hopelessly bereft. Meanwhile, Robin's father, Harry, looks on, thinking of his late daughter-in-law: "Strange woman. American. Never quite seemed able to involve herself with the farm and yet--Harry swallowed. He felt it might be an obscure and diverting comfort to mention to Robin that his new power harrow would cost over six thousand pounds, but thought he'd better not."

This gives some idea of the preoccupations and sensitivities of the Meredith mind. The farm comes first; everything else comes a distant second. Next of Kin traces how that rigid mindset is changed by a wholly unexpected agent: Judy's London roommate, Zoe. This disturbingly forthright character arrives for a weekend at Tideswell Farm bedecked in her signature purple hair, rows of silver earrings, and all-black boy's wardrobe. She declares that she likes farm life, and to Judy's horror, soon moves down from London to Tideswell, ultimately ending up in the paterfamilias's bed. As the Merediths find their old ways failing them, Zoe teaches the family how to live with her own odd mixture of honesty and lawlessness. Trollope's books usually move with a nice combination of introspection and action. Next of Kin, on the other hand, holds still--Zoe has to all but goad the Meredith family into the happy ending she has in mind. This stillness makes for a quietly and surprisingly satisfying read. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly
Among bestselling British author Trollope's enviable skills are her ability to create characters with believable flaws, and to ponder plausible life situations in which the best possible outcome is merely pragmatic, rather than romantic, and tinged with rue as well as guarded hope. In her ninth novel (after Marrying the Mistress), the theme is the inevitability of change and the possibility of growth. The Meredith family, for generations farmers in the rural English midlands, are now beset by financial problems in a changing economy. The book opens with the funeral of Caro Meredith, a transplanted American who never adjusted to being a farm wife. Her husband, taciturn Robin, is less bereaved than relieved, since Caro stopped loving him long ago, but their adopted daughter, Judy, has always taken her mother's part and bitterly resents both her father and his dairy farm. Robin's parents live nearby, raising crops on their own acreage, and so does Robin's troubled brother, Joe, and his needy wife, Lindsay. Trollope does an excellent job of describing the dynamics of farm life, both the unremitting labor and the encroachment of modern techniques. As usual, she conveys the nuances of marriage, in which lack of communication can breed tragedy. After another family death and Robin's unexpected attraction to Judy's flaky London flatmate, Zoe, the novel becomes a crucible of change, realistically describing how brave people pull themselves together and move on. In addition to crafting an absorbing narrative, Trollope charms with her depiction of several young children, whose speech and behavior are captured with clarity and endearing fidelity. (July) Forecast: Trollope's devoted readers are rarely disappointed, and this new novel will add to her reputation for writing psychologically nuanced fiction that's commercially viable.

From Library Journal
Readers of Trollope (Marrying the Mistress, Other People's Children) have come to expect the unexpected, and this latest novel is no exception. It begins grimly, with the funeral of Caro Meredith, wife of a dairy farmer in the English Midlands. Caro's death is merely the prelude, however, to a series of shattering events for those she left behind from husband Robin and daughter Judy, a magazine "subeditor," to brother-in-law Joe and his wife, Lyndsay, to Robin's parents, Dilys and Harry. The arrival of Judy's unconventional roommate, Zoe, brings a measure of openness to this emotionally closed family and gives Robin some small amount of the love that he lacked throughout his marriage. Nevertheless, despite the transformative nature of tragedy, particularly for Judy, who chucks her London life, and Lyndsay, both of whom become farmers, the novel lacks the leavening that characterizes most of Trollope's work, and some readers may find it heavy going. Trollope at her best!
By Johanna Lindback
I've read a couple of Joanna Trollope books, and one thing that always fascinates me are all the details and insight she puts into her books. For example, when I read "The rector's wife" I was sure she must have lived close to the church. Now I am just as convinced she must have been a farmer. I am certainly not a farmer, and I'm not at all interested in it, so it's a great achievement that I think this becomes so fascinating - tha Farm and the Earth.
The story is about a farming family and we get to follow three generations, grandfather/mother, their two sons with families, and the grandchildren. Because of this the book contains much more than just the farming issues, even though that's the background setting. One of Trollopes great qualities is her ability to make people come to life, and this book is one of the best examples of this. She easily switches between Harry, the grandfather who is depressed over the fact that he's too old to keep his farm, and Judy, the grand daughter in her twenties who's living in London and searches for love and her place in the family.
The story is rich and complex, but it never loses touch and you eagerly follow what's going to happen. After the death of Judy's mother, a friend of Judy's come to visit from London, and with her as an outsider not knowing all the rules, things start to change. It's gripping, funny, warm and sad. It's very good! This book set me off in a Trollope-phase and I'm working my way through them all now.

Dead But Not Forgotten
By Wendy Kaplan
The mood is definitely melancholy in this story of Caro, an American transplant to the English farming country whose funeral we attend on the very first page.
Caro's friends, neighbors and family are devastated by her too-early death (a brain tumor), and one could accurately say she is gone but not forgotten. In Trollope's own trademark way, we learn that Caro profoundly affected everyone in her extended circle--and not always for the good.
Who was Caro? Did she love her silent, taciturn farmer husband Robin, who bears a weight of responsibility that would break most people? And what about Robin's charming, but ultimately feckless brother Joe? What was between him and Caro, and why can he not find solace in his young family?
Solace is not to be had for Judy either: The twentysomething adopted daughter of Caro and Robin is beside herself with grief, and deeply angry at her father for seemingly neglecting his perfect wife.
As Trollope does so brilliantly, she lets us view the re-shifting and uncomfortable emotions of Caro's family from a child's eye point of view, in this case, the sensitive, 3-year-Hughie, Joe's son. There are only two people in the book who grab life to the fullest, as Caro is purported to have done. One is little Hughie's baby sister, Rose, whose sturdy little soul brooks no interference. She is, simply, a force to be reckoned with. Her adult counterpart is the hippie-ish Zoe, flatmate of the self-pitying Judy, and the ultimate, unlikely catalyst for the family to come to terms with its grief and see Caro for what she really was, warts and all.
This is one of the darker of Trollope's books, but as always, well-written and, in my case, hard to put down. It makes the reader think hard about perception and reality, and the intangible nature of love--both romantic and family.

Subtle, thoughtful, gracefully written
By Lynn Harnett
Trollope's novels often depict a family in crisis; the reverberations of upheaval through the comfortable routines of familial life, and the individual responses to trouble and change. She sometimes likes to throw an outsider into the mix: the self-possessed young mistress in "Marrying the Mistress;" the old lady struck by a protagonist's car in "The Men and the Girls;" and Zoe, the forthright, city-bred innocent of her current novel.
"Next of Kin" explores the aftermath of death and its effect on the survivors. The story opens with the funeral of Caro Meredith, California-born wife of English dairy farmer Robin Meredith, dead of a brain tumor in her forties. Robin's grief is complicated by his dead wife's long detachment from the farm and from himself. Caro, a rootless wanderer who always wanted to belong somewhere, to someone, could never embrace the land-bound farm life and left her husband's bed years earlier. Robin feels, sadly, bitterly, that she never tried.
The center of Caro's life was Judy, her and Robin's adopted daughter. Judy, so close to her mother, resents Robin as a remote, distant man who never loved Caro properly. Robin is awkward with Judy, so much Caro's daughter, and, truth be told, he never wanted to adopt and was devastated to learn Caro had married without telling him she could have no children.
Robin's brother, Joe, beset with private worries and longings, and a young, needy wife, mourns Caro as the emblem of freedom and otherness in his life. Joe runs the leased family farm after Robin left crop farming to establish his own dairy farm. Their parents, Dilys and Harry, too old now to run things on their own, see Joe, their favorite, as the repository of all their hopes and the productivity of their lives.
A few weeks after Caro's death, Judy brings her new flatmate home from London to her father's farm. Zoe grew up in the London projects. To her, meals are take-away food. She has never so much as peeled a potato or washed a dish. Robin's farm, with its animals, its broad acreage and seeming self-sufficiency, enthralls her, and, to Judy's outrage, she whimsically installs herself there, learning to run the tractor, cook and stack bales of hay.
Seen from the family's vantagepoint, Zoe seems self-possessed, independent, possibly dangerous. Not knowing the hidebound rules of community and family, she breaks them freely. When a second death shakes the family to the core, Zoe remains, unintrusive but available, infuriating some of the women who see her as a scheming wanton and Robin's acceptance of her as a betrayal. But she serves as a catalyst, forcing the family to look outward, to see themselves as an outsider does.
Trollope's characters are flawed human beings whose aspirations and failures ring true. There are no bad people or good people; their complexity resides in the minutiae of relationships, self-perception and innate personality. As a catalyst Zoe sparks small epiphanies leading to minor, possibly lasting change. These occur not so much because of Zoe herself but because, as an outsider making her way inside, she casts new light on unquestioned traditions. Convention plays a strong part in justifying people's actions; Zoe serves to make them confront the underlying selfishness or weakness or convenience or dependency. That Zoe may suffer when the family closes ranks again concerns no one, except, possibly, Zoe. To everyone else, her life outside their sphere of reference is a blank.
There's a lot going on in this novel, from explorations of farming realities in our time (mostly harsh) to the vicissitudes and accommodations of married life (a favorite theme of Trollope's) to the degrees of dependency and manipulation between parent and child. As the central theme, death affects each of these relationships, rippling outwards to draw in those on the periphery, calling into question the past and the future, people in the misery of grief "shackled to their thoughts," but going on because "while we're alive, we live."
Beautifully structured, gracefully written, full of difficult subtleties and unexpected strengths, "Next of Kin" is one of Trollope's finest novels.

Great help to my daughter
By ELF916
My daughter just delivered a healthy 8 lb 6 oz boy but was not able to enjoy him at all. As a matter of fact, she said to me "I got angry when I realized I couldn't send him back". She had a pretty tough first pregnancy, endured 5 months of bed rest, developed HELLP syndrome which caused an emergency C-section and two days later ended up back in the hospital with an intestinal infection. Who could blame her for being overwhelmed, unhappy and unsure about having had this baby.

I researched books on the internet and came across this one which had been written by someone who had gone through many similar feelings along with others who had experienced

post-partum depression in one manner or another.

I gave it to her upon my arrival in town as she welcomed me in tears. It broke my heart to see her that way. She read it from cover to cover that day and it helped her to understand that others had gone through this and that it was not her fault. She was fortunate and because it was recognized so early, she began taking medication right away. It took her a few weeks but she is now able to cope and is feeling a hundred times better. This morning on the phone she told me that she had just read him a story and to hold on so I could talk to my wonderful grandson.

Thank you so much for this book. It truly helped more than any words she heard from many well-meaning friends.

Every struggling postpartum mom should have this book
By Meri Levy
This book contains the stories of dozens of women who have traveled the road through PPD and back and lived to tell the tale. Having suffered myself from postpartum depression and anxiety in the past, the book inspired me to write down my own story, which has helped me put closure on that painful time.

I wish I had this book when I was suffering myself. I see myself reflected in so many of the stories, and the fact that these women have put their illness behind them would have helped me to have hope, which is so difficult to maintain when you are depressed. So many moms feel alone and isolated with PPD, and don't even have a name for their condition, often until years later. Hopefully this book will shed some light on this misunderstood and under-diagnosed illness, so that more women can get the support and treatment they need.

Sandra, your book is an incredible gift to both the women you tell their stories in it, and the women who will read it and receive comfort. Thank you.

Essential to recovery
By J. Veit
This book has been essential to my recovery from postpartum depression (PPD). Hearing from doctors and friends that I'd be OK was one thing; hearing it from real women who've been through the darkness and back was quite another, and had much more impact. I was amazed what a kickstart this book gave to my recovery, and I hope every women grappling with PPD has the opportunity to read it.

Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda, by Sean Naylor

Award-winning combat reporter Sean Naylor reveals how close American forces came to disaster in Afghanistan against Al Qaida—after easily defeating the ragtag Taliban that had sheltered the terrorist organization behind the 9/11 attacks.

At dawn on March 2, 2002, over two hundred soldiers of the 101st Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions flew into the mouth of a buzz saw in Afghanistan's Shahikot Valley. Believing the war all but over, U.S. military leaders refused to commit the extra infantry, artillery, and attack helicopters required to fight the war's biggest battle— a missed opportunity to crush hundreds of Al Qaida's fighters and some of its most senior leaders.

Eyewitness Naylor vividly portrays the heroism of the young, untested soldiers, the fanaticism of their ferocious enemy, the mistakes that led to a hellish mountaintop firefight, and how thirteen American commandos embodied "Patton's three principles of war"—audacity, audacity, and audacity—by creeping unseen over frozen mountains into the heart of an enemy stronghold to prevent a U.S. military catastrophe.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Reviewers lauded Naylor’s "meticulously reported" account (Oregonian). It includes in-person observations during the operation (Naylor was imbedded with the 101st Airborne Division troops who fought in the battle), and scores of after-the-fact interviews, many with sources who wouldn’t allow themselves to be identified. His two-year undertaking to bring those 17 days to life yields an extraordinarily detailed account of the fateful mission. While a few critics felt that some aspects of the book were unbalanced, all agreed that Naylor did a good job in portraying the drama, heroism, and blunders that defined Anaconda while raising broader issues of warfare and its ultimate purpose.

From Booklist
In March 2002, U.S. forces moved into the Shahikot Mountains, hoping to trap and eliminate a substantial number of Al Qaeda fighters. They were handicapped almost fatally by their own lack of numbers, substandard logistics support, the highest altitudes at which Americans had ever fought, and the frigid weather of the mountains. Victory eluded them, although considerable damage was done to the enemy; and disaster may have been averted by the actions of special operations teams drawn from Delta Force and Seal Team 6. These operatives put on a very convincing demonstration of how much of the future of warfare may lie in the hands of small bands of experts engaging the enemy by stealth, with heavy firepower on call, firepower that wasn't always available in Operation Anaconda. Prizewinning Army Times reporter Naylor has written the best full-scale history of Operation Anaconda to date. Roland Green

The Complete, Unvarnished Truth About Operation Anaconda
By H. S. Marsh
Sean Naylor tells a thorough, penetrating story of heroism, chaos, and failure in Operation Anaconda. The book is not an easy one to read. There are many players, many organizations, and a sometimes confusing mass of information that provide both a complete yet tedious account of the days leading up to the operation and through to the bitter end.

As difficult as it is to read, the book is well worth the time and effort. It gives a perspective on the way that "higher headquarters" and commanders far from the scene made decisions that cost the lives of brave men and compromised the chances of success. With all the technology that the United States has, and with the massive staffs in CENTCOM and SOCOM, it is surprising that the only people who really understood what was going to happen, and what was actually happening, were the small group of CIA and "Black SOF" who had "eyes on" the situation. In the case of the latter, they even had to argue against direction from commanding generals far from the action to be able to do the job. Naylor gives good credit to these brave and dedicated men.

Naylor gives a good account of the difficulty that the general in charge of the operation had in organizing his force. Rather than giving him a coherent and complete force, the high command forced him to cobble together pieces from two different divisions, plus some SOF, Afghan militia, and allied units. They also restricted the deployment of attack helicopters and artillery that were needed. As a result, the U.S. forces on the ground were actually outgunned by the enemy, and only their training and bravery saved the day.

It's a shock to learn that the U.S. Air Force missed an opportunity to deliver what might have been a death blow to al Qaeda. If only they had provided the initial bombardment and follow-on close air support that the forces on the ground needed and expected, the situation might have turned out far differently. Instead, the Air Force made a tragic friendly fire mistake that disrupted a major thrust into the valley and may have doomed the operation at the very start. Naylor pulls no punches in showing where both the heroism and the blame lie.

Read the book. It's worth the time and effort and will give a good perspective on how the most powerful nation in the world still has to rely on a few good men to put their lives on the line and to die because senior leaders far from the fight think that they know better than the people with boots on the ground and eyes on the target.

GREAT!!!
By Amazon Customer
Sean Naylor brings a unique package of skills to this undertaking. His through knowledge of the Army, much of it gained in the field under fire, gives him a unique ability to bring the reader into the chaos of night combat on the top of a frozen mountain and then, a few pages later, gain an understanding of what was happening all the way up the command structure. It is apparent from the detail that he did his research among people who trusted him with some very difficult truths.

The author pulls no punches, brave people do dumb things on occasion and egos at the command level get people killed. Naylor traces the breakdowns in strategy, leadership, intelligence and communications from start to finish. He also does a magnificent job of putting the reader in the middle of some of the most intense firefights since Vietnam. It's also clear how much of a role luck plays in many of the encounters.

Some have compared the book with Blackhawk Down; however, I believe it is far superior due to the author's knowledge, relationships with the troops and writing skills. It is also a great read with First In.

Finishing the book it is hard not to be angry that we seem to be forgetting the lessons of Vietnam, where our tuition was paid in blood, and returning to an era of micromanagement of the battlefield from afar, with those who lack the through knowledge of the field conditions making decisions. Of rigidity in planning that squanders opportunity. It is a stinging illustration of the deadly results of ignoring the role of field leadership. However, it is also the story of true warriors, operating under the most difficult conditions with a common purpose and courage.

It's not defeat snatched from the jaws of victory; but, certainly qualifies as an opportunity lost and avoidable tragedy.

Highly recommended.

Review of "Not a Good Day to Die"
By Alan L. Chase
Several of my friends have told me that if I want to begin to understand the role of Special Forces and Special Operations, I must read "Not A Good Day To Die." I finished reading this book several weeks ago, and am able now to take the time to share with readers of The White Rhino Report some of my thoughts. The subtitle of this book is "The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda." Sean Naylor, winner of the prestigious Edgar A. Poe Award, does a masterful job of bringing the reader into the chaos that enveloped the soldiers fighting in Afghanistan's Shahikot Valley.

The primary take-way for me, as I reflected on what happened during Operation Anaconda in 2002, was that the pattern seemed all too familiar - a pattern of systemic miscommunication and flawed decisions made far from the battle field. Many of these decisions and orders placed in grave jeopardy the lives of those fighting on the ground and in the air. Throughout my reading of Naylor's descriptions and analysis, I was reminded of the landmark study by my friend, Dr. Scott Snook of the Harvard business School faculty. Dr. Snook, a decorated combat veteran and expert in organizational behavior, wrote the book, Friendly Fire: The Accidental Shootdown of U.S. Black Hawks over Northern Iraq, an analysis of an incident that occurred at the end of the first Gulf War. Dr. Snook not only highlights the systemic failures that led to the needless shootdown of two Black Hawks, but points out that similar dysfunction can be identified in any organization.

Naylor summarizes concisely the chaos that developed in the Shahikot Valley:

"The small, enclosed battlefield meant the calls for fire often outnumbered the number of airplanes that could safely be flying bombing runs over the valley simultaneously; the icy relationship between Mikolashek and Mosley, who should have been working hand in glove, trickled down to their staffs; the Mountain staff's failure to anticipate the likelihood of ferocious resistance on the enemy's part meant they had given only cursory attention to close air support issues; and the Combined Air Operations Center staff had grown used to controlling air strikes from their base in Saudi Arabia, rather than yielding authority to the ground commander, as called for in joint doctrine. As ever in combat, it was left to captains and sergeants to bear the consequences of mistakes made by generals." (Page 272)

The author continues his observations and conclusions with these thoughts:

"But the lack of clear guidance about who was in charge of the recce missions being launched from Gardez now began to reap disastrous results . . . This critical moment in Operation Anaconda was to be no exception. Just 1,000 meters away at the safe hose, helping to coordinate the preparations for Operation Payback (not scheduled to launch until 2:20 a.m.), was Peter Blaber, a man whose entire career had prepared him to make the kind of decision Hyder now faced, a decision upon which would hang the fates not just of Hyder's men, but of others as well. Blaber had spent weeks immersing himself in the tactical situations that confronted recce teams in the Shahikot. He was also still - officially - the officer commanding the reconnaissance effort in the valley. But Hyder chose to ignore him and instead seek guidance from the Blue TOC, which was almost 100 miles away and staffed with Navy personnel who had never been anywhere near the Shahikot." (Pages 308-9)

I closed the book after reading the last pages and found myself balancing competing emotions. On the one hand, I was proud of the men who had fought bravely in carrying out their assignments as part of the complex Operation anaconda. On the other hand, I was angry at the seemingly chronic failure of senior leadership to exercise proper command and control. Perhaps this kind of confusion, chaos and mismanagement is an unavoidable consequence of the "fog of war," but it seems that our men and women who put their lives on the line deserve better support.

The book is a tribute to our fighting forces, as well as a cautionary tale. I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the complexities of fighting battles under extreme duress and in the most inhospitable of landscapes - both topographical and bureaucratic!
