People magazine reporter Birkbeck offers little insight in this muddied look at Robert Durst, the eccentric New York real estate heir suspected in the 1982 disappearance of his troubled wife, the former Kathie McCormack. Although investigators had circumstantial evidence against him, including statements about long-term physical and mental abuse, Durst was never indicted. In 1999, after receiving new information, the New York State Police opened a new investigation into the case. Durst proved elusive until he was arrested in Galveston, Tex., for murdering his neighbor. After making bail, he disappeared, and police determined he'd impersonated a deaf-mute woman in order to rent apartments there and in New Orleans before finally being apprehended in Pennsylvania for shoplifting. Durst goes on trial in Texas in September, but the investigation into Kathie's disappearance remains stalled. Birkbeck is attuned to the subtle conflicts among the Durst family, Kathie's family and the police and district attorney's office, which scuttled the original inquiry. But Birkbeck's breathless prose ("Kathie was clearly on a downward spiral, a 747 that had lost its engines") almost buries these moments of clarity. He relies on unnecessary digression (such as Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro's troubles); tinny recreated dialogue; and nasty portrayals. He paints the NYPD detectives as boors, the Dursts as coldhearted robber barons and Kathie's supporters as trashy hangers-on. This voyeuristic true-crime may "dish the dirt" on Durst, but it makes for prurient reading.

The Murder Mystery That Never Ends!

Matt Birkbeck's writing style is not your usual 'whodoneit'. He writes with passion and grace, putting you right in the driver's seat on every page. I became aware of the Kathie Durst case through the ABC special "Vanished" and Cynthia McFadden's excellent reporting. I was one of the people who transcribed the interviews at the time and became totally caught up in the story. I would have never dreamed a few years later that the central character in the case, Bobby Durst, would end up going on trial in Texas for a totally different murder, and then found innocent! As I write this, he is now out of jail and living in a highrise apartment a free man. No one could make this up!

The book offered me valuable information that I had not heard before. Until tonight, after reading it in one sitting, I did not know Kathie Durst's best friend Gilberte, had a secret life of her own. I remember being reduced to floods of tears during her interview on the ABC special, and wishing I had a friend who cared that much about me. After reading this book, I now feel thankful I don't have such friends. Read the book and you'll understand what I mean.

Each person connected with the case (Police, family, friends, etc) are well-defined and sympathetic. It would be so easy to point fingers and say: If the Police had handled this case right from the onset, someone would have been arrested and tried for her disappearance and/or murder. But you can't point fingers. Based on the information at the time of Kathie's disappearance, the Police were under the false impression she had returned to Manhattan and had been seen alive after she left her home with Bobby that night. Then there is Susan Berman, his close friend. There are books out on her life and murder well worth reading. She's a whole other story. Another sad child of wealth.

This is one of those incredibly sad stories of pretty girl marries rich boy and does not live happily ever after. You think; If they had only kept the little store upstate everything would have worked out. Who is to blame? A young boy who is traumatized seeing his mother kill herself? A rich family who enables him in everything he does, even though they know he needs help? It reminds me of the Ira Einhorn murder case where he kills his pretty, bright girlfriend and almost gets away with it for years and years. He, too, is enabled by a member of a wealthy family who sends him money to live in Europe, knowing full well he killed her.

The book was written before the trial in Texas and before he was found innocent, so if you are not familiar with the case to-date, you're left hanging. Somehow I have a feeling we have not heard the last of Robert Durst. He will either live out the rest of his life in seclusion or will jump off a roof somewhere like his mother did. This story is not going to have a happy ending. It's an excellent read. Mr. Birkbeck is quite a writer.

Masterful Writing About An Intriguing Case

This is NOT just another true crime book. Matt Birkbeck can really tell a story and his writing style is excellent. He skillfully portrays a cast of real life characters who are affected by Robert Durst, a super wealthy, eccentric and evil man. Kathie Durst, his pretty wife went missing in 1981. Her body was never found. Ironically, she was planning to divorce her husband when she vanished. Some 20 years later, a raggedy-looking Durst was picked up for shoplifting in Pennsylvania, and detained mainly because a shrewd cop followed his intuition about the strange man. It turned out that Durst was wanted for the grisly murder of an elderly man in another state.
But what else did Robert Durst do, and whatever happened to his wife? We may never know.
Meet some great detectives, a cool private investigator, and Kathie's friends. Like 'em or not, you'll be turning the pages to find out what happens next.
This is a current case so take the time to read it. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
There are so many plots and sub-plots to the story it's almost Shakespearean.

Einstein is hot this year; not only has his brain traveled cross-country but his personal and scientific lives are being explored in depth. Gravity waves aren't as well known as the more familiar theory of E=mc2 (which is getting its own book this season, see Forecasts, Sept. 18), but cross-promotion of related titles will boost sales of this graceful little book about the mysterious subject. Those waves are the only form of radiation predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity that remain undetected (a gravity wave is created by the movement of an object; it is not the same as gravitational attraction). Unlike a wave of light, which moves through a medium, space-time, a gravity wave is similar to a wave in water, which is movement of the medium; however, a wave on a pond will go around you as you sit in a fishing boat, whereas a gravity wave will go through an astronaut in a spaceship as easily as it will pass through a star. Scientists predict the only gravity waves we will be able to detect at first are those from such galaxy-shaking events as supernova explosions or the collisions of binary neutron stars, but once gravity waves are graphed and analyzed, we should be able to confirm the existence of black holes, explore time back to the threshold of the big bang, and accurately map the dimensions of the universe. Today kilometers-long interferometer detectors are going online in Washington and Louisiana to detect gravity waves. Tomorrow scientists hope to have a space-based observatory tagging along behind Earth as it orbits the sun. Bartusiak (Thursday's Universe) has been writing about gravity waves for more than a decade, and her familiarity with the search and the scientists involved results in a thorough, engrossing and valuable chronicle.

An important preview of things to come

This book provides a rare opportunity for non-scientists to understand an important scientific advance before it happens.

Bartusiak provides readers with a thorough history of the decades of theorizing, organizing, and development that have led to the current generation of gravitational-wave observatories eagerly awaiting the first detection of the space-distorting pulses predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity nearly a century ago.

From my point of view, the book presents a bit more of the history and politics of gravitational-wave research, and a bit less of the science, than I might like. Still, Bartusiak tells a very important story in great detail. She clearly did her homework; the book is full of the kind of details that come only from visiting sites and interviewing key players face-to-face.

I thought that the most important point Bartusiak made did not come until at least two-thirds of the way through the book. She finally made it clear that the key problem in detecting gravitational waves rippling through spacetime is isolating the detector from every other influence, insulating and quieting it to the point that a change in length no larger than a fraction of the diameter of an atom can be detected. That's why, when gravitational waves are finally detected, it will be a great technical triumph as well as a vindication of Einstein's theory and a powerful new window on the universe.

On the whole I'd describe Bartusiak's writing as clear and well organized, but not inspiring. However, she did come up with one delightful metaphor. In describing the impending collision of two black holes, one of the predicted sources of detectable ripples in spacetime, she wrote, "Picture two black holes slowly circling each other, like a pair of sumo wrestlers warily checking each other out in the ring." I would have liked the book even more if Bartusiak had provided more imaginative writing like that, and more science as well.

Still, if you want to know what the first detection of gravitational waves will mean, and the enormous amount of effort that has gone into this impending discovery, _Einstein's Unfinished Symphony_ is well worth reading.

A Tribute to Joseph Weber, the LIGO project and Much More

In this book Marcia Bartusiak, an excellent science journalist, writes about scientists' endeavors to detect gravitational waves coming from deep space. The existence of gravity waves was predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, and they are considered to have the frequency falling into the audio range, but no one has ever listened to them. Thus the author elegantly entitled this book "Einstein's Unfinished Symphony." Each chapter also has the title related to music. For example, the chapter about the discovery of the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar, indirect evidence for gravity waves, is cogently entitled "Pas De Deux."
Bartusiak's sentences are also rhythmic like music, especially in the earliest chapters, so that the reader comfortably learns about Einstein's discovery of the origin of gravity and Renaissance in relativity made theoretically by John Archibald Wheeler and experimentally by Robert Dicke. Wheeler is cited to have explained general relativity in one clear sentence, "Mass tells space-time how to curve, and space-time tells mass how to move."
The pioneer of experimental work directly to catch gravity waves was Joseph Weber. He published his first results in 1969, claiming evidence for observation of gravity waves based on coincident signals from two bar detectors. Unfortunately, by the middle of 1970s nearly everyone came to agree that Weber was mistaken. Bartusiak writes that Weber had however created a momentum that could not be stopped. Weber died on 30 September 2000, just a few months before the publication of this book. Thus the book partially happened to become one of the earliest tributes to Weber. His first bar detector is now shown in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C.
Then comes the central story of this book, the construction, improvements and prospects of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). LIGO is a gigantic instrument system placed in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington. Its construction started as a collaborative project, involving dozens of scientists and the cost of more than $370 million. Among those scientists, Rainer Weiss is considered to be the founding father of the effort. His career began with a determination to get rid of the noises in a hi-fi system, only to transfer that interest ironically or rather wonderfully to reducing the noises that could mask a gravity wave.
Each piece of LIGO's detector includes a marvel of engineering. LIGO's "classy" physics and the virgin territory of possible gravity wave astronomy are gathering young physicists from around the world. Potential sources of gravity waves cataloged so far by Kip Thorne's Caltech team and other theoretical groups around the world are many and varied from black hole collisions to neutron-star mountains. The author tells us all the details of these in a quite understandable manner. She also describes gravitational research in countries other than United States and projects by the use of spacecrafts.
The book is well balanced between theory and experiment, between science and sociology, and between anecdotes and stories of serious pursuit. As for anecdotes, there is one about the fact that the term "black hole" caused a problem for a while in France. Read the book for the reason. This is a masterpiece of nonfiction, and will absorb the mind of both a scientist and a layperson.

Never thought two seconds about gravity waves?

Neither had I...
Now, as the New York Times Book Review states, "When a gravity wave is first detected..." (I) "...will feel like a participant in the great event."
Why should you care? When gravity waves become detectable, we humans will open a brand new chapter into the discovery of our universe, and subsequently ourselves. We may eventually find the universe is a great huge pond with spacetime ripples originating from infinite sources. We may finally see the big picture, a bit of celestial music, and direct evidence of the most incalculable event in our universe, the collision and coalescence of two black holes. The thought of this type of event being recorded for human ears is exciting and provocative... I hope I am a lucky participant.
The supporting cast, are the scientists from many countries, who seek to be the first to find and record a gravity wave. This is an obvious Nobel Prize event, so the stakes are high... On the other hand, virtually all of them realize they are laying the groundwork for (perhaps) future generations. There is a very good chance that none of the current players will even be around when a gravity wave is captured on it's travel to infinity. On the other hand, future generations will be infinitely indebted to these pioneers, and us common astronomy buffs will be richer for their selflessness.
Marcia Bartusiak wrote a fine book for the rest of us... I look forward to reading more from her, and recommend this to anyone with even a passing interest. Sure, there is no punch line yet, but when there is, I will 'get it'... Will you?
Finally, what can be said about Albert Einstein... A towering genius that looked at our physical world, pulled back a great obscuration, and let us all see the light. I will always be in awe...

Readers will smile at her challenge to live in a dorm with messy, teenage, party-loving roommates. Her clues take her on an overnight hike where she comes face to face with foulmouthed villains, and it becomes a fight for survival of the fittest against both man and nature. As Anna reviews her clues and ponders her next moves, Barr effectively summarizes the story for readers. Descriptions of the park scenery add to the enjoyment of the mystery. Darkly challenging

Nevada Barr is at her best in Western settings, where her characters have room to roam. In this book, she returns to the west, but sets her story in a Novemberish Yosemite, hemmed in by clouds, trapped fog-like, barely above the treetops. A lot of reviewers of the hardback complained about that, but they've obviously never lived in a climate that can produce this kind of weather for two weeks at a crack. I do. It can chill you, right to the soul.

Which is what this book is all about. The set-up is simple enough: Anna Pigeon, upwardly mobile park ranger, is working undercover in a swank hotel as a waitress, hoping to suss out the fate of four hikers who went missing and are presumably dead. But what this book is really about is evil: the human evil that, like endless November fog, can invade even sacred places like Yosemite; and the spiritual evil to which some people have surrendered more than others, but which is beneath the skin of us all. Opposing this, Barr sets a collection of women of varying degrees of spiritual and emotional innocence (and in some cases, intellectual innocence) and throughout, she uses undercover detective work as a metaphor for the loss and retaining of one's identity in the face of pressures that would make you someone you don't want to be.

Basically, this is Barr's most ambitious work, and for about 350 pages it works stunningly. In the final 50 pages it comes partially unglued-one of the critical innocence-related plot threads gets dropped, and the behavior of some of the villains seems to have been altogether too convoluted, given their motives. For those reasons, I can't give the book a perfect score.

Bottom line: This is a very good book. But beware, it's darker than the normal Anna Pigeon fare, and the normally sunny landscapes of Barr's natural world share in the darkness.

This was a fast developing plot and did leave you guessing to the end. Anna does get into a lot of trouble, but it keeps the books interesting. Funny to read her comments about herself as a middle aged woman, and then she takes down the bad guy.

Good read. Anna Pigeon is a modern Superwoman with superior skills in surviving in the wild that serve her well in solving psycopathic murder cases. Always interesting and well plotted, keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end.

This is my favorite Carolyn Hart book

This is my favorite Carolyn Hart book. Every chapter starts with a part of a letter and a short first person account of an old woman returning to the small Oklahoma town where she lived as a girl during World War II. The rest of each chapter takes place in 1944. It is a third person account of a friend's family tragedy and how it effects Gretchen, the main character, her grandmother, and the town in general. Gretchen, a talented writer, almost 14, was hired by the Gazette as a reporter because so many had been called up to serve in the war. There are many observations of the war economy and, as fascinating as that is, it's Gretchen's wide eyed innocence, her perspective as a friend of the tragic family, and her perspective as a very young reporter learning the realities of public opinion and politics that make this story so compelling.

Reader's Delight

Reading this book posed a dilemma for me. I wanted to read quickly to chase after the exciting mystery plot, but also slowly to savor the wonderful writing. It would be a perfect book to read aloud to someone.
We see the story through the eyes of a woman named Gretchen, mentally vigorous in old age and reliving events from the summer of 1944 when she was fourteen. Men being away at war changed life in her small Oklahoma town, and gave her the opportunity to work as a newspaper reporter that summer. When a murder happened two doors from where she lived with her grandmother, she found herself deeply involved.
I don't enjoy stories about teenage angst, and this is not at all that kind of book. The use of Gretchen's point of view allows the reader to see events through her innocence, rather than the cynicism of a hard-boiled mystery.
If you've enjoyed other Carolyn Hart books, you'll surely love this one. Oklahoma summers are HOT, so it will warm you on a winter night, or have you reaching for iced tea and watermelon in summer!

Letter From Home Hits Home

What a rich novel, a powerful mystery, a joy to read.

This novel is outside Hart's well-known longterm mystery series. It involves a 13-year-old in her first journalism job on a daily newspaper in a small northeast Oklahoma town in 1944. It does, however, have a strong mystery to spin, integral to the coming-of-age core plot.

I grew up in a small-town in the same part of Oklahoma during World War II myself. In fact, my family owned the daily newspaper. I don't know whether I was charmed by the book more because it captures or recreates so well a time and place that I share -- or by its intrinsic value, a fine story, beautifully told. I suspect both.
Anyway, I loved it. So will you and so should some people on your holiday gift list.

"Uncommon Valor, Common Virtue" is a must read for anyone interested in the battle for Iwo Jima. Hal Buell does a magnificent job of placing the reader in the boots of the courageous American marines that stormed the desolate island of Iwo Jima over 60 years ago. Through a rare collection of photos from the AP and National Archives and brilliant quotations from the leathernecks on the front lines, the reader follows the heroic marines from D-Day on February 19th, 1945 through the hellish days that followed on a small volcanic island barely visible on most contemporary maps.

Although the overriding theme is the memorable photo taken by Joe Rosenthal of the marines raising the stars and stripes on Mount Suribachi, Buell successfully incorporates the progression of the battle in great detail, disclosing such little know facts as the unfriendly weather that the marines had to endure and the daily measurement of the tough-won terrain captured by the marines on the island.

Through quotations and photos by Rosenthal and the many other unsung heroes of Iwo Jima, this book gives an excellent first hand account of the gruesome battle that paved the way for American victory in the Pacific.

Super Photos and information

I have read nearly everything written about this epic U.S. Marine Corps battle. My father was a member of the 4th Marine Division and survived to come home as one of "The Greatest Generation". I also spent a career in the US Navy first as a corpsman with the 1st Marine Division in Viet Nam and then as a member of the Navy Nurse Corps. This book is another "must have" for anyone interested in the history of WW II in the Pacific. We all have seen the flag raising photo that became symbolic of the US in WW II but this book tells us much more about it and also tells much more about this battle. As we get farther away from 1945 and those brave warriors pass from this earth it is of extreme importance that we have documentation to remind us of the sacrifices made on those small islands in the Pacific ocean. If you are interested in the Pacific Theatre I highly recommend this book as an addition to your library.

Helps to Understand the Great Struggle of WWII

"A picture is worth a thousand words," goes the old saying; "Uncommon Valor, Common Virtue" with its 120+ photographs about Iwo Jima and associated verbal explanations provides an invaluable start for one trying to understand the intensity of battle during WWII and the sacrifices made daily by those involved.

Iwo Jima was bombed and shelled for 70 days prior to the Marines landing, using an armada of some 450 ships. For 36 days and nights during February-March of '45 100,000 Americans and Japanese fought across the 4.5 mile volcanic island. Nearly 7,000 Americans and 20,000 Japanese lost their lives.

D-Day + 4 brought the famous flag-raising and its photograph - since memorialized in statues, stamps, coins, etc. The famous photograph actually involved a second flag-raising - a colonel wanted the first flag replaced by a larger one visible across the island. Unfortunately this led to later (untrue) charges that the second photo was staged.

Regardless, fighting continued on for weeks after the photo - only 1,200 Japanese were taken prisoner; most fought to the death, many trapped by flame-throwers inside caves and bunkers, blown up by naval shelling, or killed in hand-to-hand combat.

Only three of the six flag-raisers in the photograph survived to see it; they subsequently traveled across the U.S. serving as War Bond ambassadors or attending ceremonies (often seated at the rear) after the war. Sadly post-war life was not good for two of the survivors - Ira Hayes died in an adobe hut on the Gila River Reservation (Sacaton, AZ) in 1954 of alcoholism, and Rene Gagan also died of alcoholism in 1979. Only John Bradley lived a reasonably good life (until 1994), though he mostly declined interviews.

Every American should spend time with books like "Uncommon Valor, Common Virtue" to better appreciate the sacrifices of our WWII servicemen.

E=mc2. Just about everyone has at least heard of Albert Einstein's formulation of 1905, which came into the world as something of an afterthought. But far fewer can explain his insightful linkage of energy to mass. David Bodanis offers an easily grasped gloss on the equation. Mass, he writes, "is simply the ultimate type of condensed or concentrated energy," whereas energy "is what billows out as an alternate form of mass under the right circumstances."

Just what those circumstances are occupies much of Bodanis's book, which pays homage to Einstein and, just as important, to predecessors such as Maxwell, Faraday, and Lavoisier, who are not as well known as Einstein today. Most people know this celebrated equation has something to do with Einstein's theory of relativity, but most nonscientists don't know what it means. This very approachable yet somewhat limited work of popular science explains, and adorns with anecdote and biography, the equation and its place in history. Oxford lecturer Bodanis (The Secret Family) shows what happened to Einstein on the way to the discovery, what other scientists did to bring it about and how the equation created the atom bomb. Part Two tackles separately the components of the equation (E, =, m, c and "squared"), which means that it covers 18th- and 19th-century physics. "'E' Is for Energy" opens with Michael Faraday, whose unusual religious beliefs helped him discover that electricity and magnetism were the same force. "'m' Is for Mass" brings in French chemist Lavoisier, who established the law of conservation of matter. Bodanis then turns to Einstein's life and work. The middle third of the book covers the exploration of the atom and the making of the atom bomb; the cast of characters here includes Marie Curie, Lise Meitner and Enrico Fermi. A concluding section considers how E=mc2 powers the sun, and how our sun and all others will eventually run out of gas. It's a well-known equation, yet who but physicists really understand E = 2? Bodanis rescues the masses from ignorance in an entertaining story about Einstein's formulation of the equation in 1905 and its association ever after with relativity and nuclear energy. Parallel with the science, Bodanis populates his tale with dramatic lives: Lavoisier mounts the scaffold; Faraday hauls himself up by his bootstraps; Einstein ponders light in his patent office; Lise Meitner gets no credit for discovering atomic fission; and Heisenberg works on a German atom bomb. Alhough Bodanis' elisions of their biographies adequately fill his popularization goal, they inevitably simplify historical complexities, as of Heisenberg's attitude toward Nazidom. On the brighter side, the science the author retells is wholly satisfying, from explaining the origin of each symbol in E = 2 to describing Faraday's unification of electricity and magnetism to Einstein's similar feat with matter, energy, and the weird war pages of time and space at light speeds. With anecdotes and illustrations, Bodanis effectively opens up E = 2 to the widest audience. Gilbert Taylor

The Basics

Bodanis rightly points out that the special theory of relativity is unjustly considered to be impossible to understand. With that as his starting point, in this "biography of the world's most famous equation" Bodanis takes us through the background of each element of the equation (E,=,m,c and ^2) and leads us through their union by Einstein in 1905. Then he takes us through some of the implications this equation has had for the twentieth century, including the development of the atomic bomb and the discovery of black holes.
All in all, Bodanis does a fine job with his book. His presentation is easy enough to follow so that nearly anyone should be able to get the basics here. Additionally, the story, as he tells it, is motivated historically which is something that I really like. We meet a number of the important figures in scientific history (including the important women, two of whom get a lot of time in this volume--Emile du Chatelet and Lise Meitner) and learn about their contributions to the development of the theory.
The main weakness of this volume is that it is also too simplistic. It serves as a great introduction for the scientifically challenged but there is very little depth here. (To someone who has read Richard Rhodes' brilliant "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" this lack of depth in certain areas will stand out.) Also, Bodanis' judgement of certain figures--Heisenberg and Hahn, in particular--is rather harsh. I may even agree with his assessment but people's lives, especially in times of war, are more complicated that can be summed up in a few negative lines.
Still, Bodanis has done a fine job here. I would encourage anyone with an interest in science to take a look at this book, especially those who think that something like relativity theory is beyond their basic understanding. This book will show them that they can learn this stuff. And when you're ready to handle more, Bodanis has given us extensive notes and a bibliography from which to move on to something higher.

Vivid and misleading stories

Bodanis' book is a quick and easy read, introducing readers to E=mc^2, the personalities involved in its creation and use, and its consequences on Earth and in stars. Bodanis tells vivid stories that make the science and history come alive. Some of these stories are substantially true, and many are misleading.
By oversimplifying the science, Bodanis makes it more accessible but introduces inaccuracies. His descriptions of fission and particle creation and annihilation are good examples of E=mc^2, but one of his favorite examples is problematic. Bodanis twice repeats the popular misconception that an object gains mass as its speed approaches the speed of light (p.52, 81), and exaggerates this fiction with descriptions of the object "swelling" as it accelerates. While an inconspicuous note in the appendix (p.250) acknowledges that this explanation is not really true, many readers will not find the note, and if they do, they'll find the cartoon image easier to remember. Bodanis' pattern of oversimplification disappoints in a book that aims to educate the public.
Another of the book's apparent strengths becomes a weakness. Its emphasis on simple, vivid portraits of key characters too often comes at the expense of deeper understanding of both the history and the science. Bodanis makes a habit of vilifying Authority and lionizing youthful independence and undersung women scientists. Lise Meiter's story is particularly compelling (and consistent with other histories), but Bodanis' more one-dimensional characterizations lose credibility. For example, his Heisenberg is simply an evil scientist while Einstein is a good and humble genius. History, however, tells more complex stories than Bodanis does. See Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" (and its references) for a richer and more nuanced investigation of Heisenberg's motivations (he suggests that he sabotaged with purposeful scientific misdirection the Nazi effort to build the Bomb). And see Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" for an excellent account of the people and the science involved. While Bodanis' retelling of history might make for exciting TV, it demands critical reading.
Bodanis paints an heroic image of Einstein that many readers will recognize by now as oversimplified. For example, Einstein's protrayal as devoted father is belied by his letters to his first wife, Mileva Maric (see Renn and Schulmann's compendium and Byatt's "Possession"). Is this the same Einstein who gave his physicist wife written instructions for keeping house so disorder and children wouldn't interfere with his work? Given Bodanis' interest in uncovering credit for women scientists, it is surprising that he does not mention the possibility that Maric contributed significantly to the development of the special theory of relativity (despite the emotional trauma of losing their first child as an unwed student; see the series of articles in fall 1994 Physics Today, the journal of the American Physical Society). This is, however, consistent with Bodanis' uncritical and common deification of Einstein, which unfortunately appears to require minimization of the contributions of scientists such as Poincare (who proposed that the speed of light was constant and called his idea "relativity" well before Einstein did, grudgingly acknowledged on p.104). In a book that purports to tell the true story clearly, how can Bodanis neglect to even mention the contributions of Michelson and Morley, Lorentz and Fitzgerald, and Einstein's intellectual debts to them? The black-and-white images of science and scientists in this book will either disappoint or mislead readers who seek deeper understanding.
If you really want to know, let this book jump start your curiosity, don't believe everything you read, and use more careful sources (such as Jeremy Bernstein) to investigate your questions.

out of this world

i have been a long time fan of bodanis's entertaining way of exposing (i.e. the human body or the garden) the mundane in novel ways; this time around, he exposes the abstract in a marvelously mundane way. i finally understand the basics of e=mc2. i thank him so much. this book is a gem of a biography of the equation that we know but don't know. physics and the scientists behind the formulation come to life in exciting, vivid, anecdotal ways. i simply didn't want this book to end. now, can we ever really say that about other books on physics and science? i haven't taken a calculus class in 25 years, but i was able to follow the reasoning and narrative flow with great ease. the hard stuff is thoughtfully stuck in the back in an appendix that is almost one half the length of the main section. bodanis has cracked this subject matter with perfect skill. and yes, i felt energized reading this book. hence, einstein's equation lives in yet another dimension!

Promises to Keep

Another outstanding real to life story with characters that you can identify with immediately. Teachers are some of the most hard working people that there are and they are not given enough credit for their work. Parents should be grateful for the education that their children are being given along with the gentle guidance and caring provided by teachers. Most teachers give more than 100% of their time, money and energy to help their students. Most use their own money for supplies to use in the classroom, since most school systems are underfunded. How many of the parents would do the same in their jobs. If you are having problems with your child, then you sending them off to school is giving the teachers the same problems do deal with no insight into the cause of the problems. Yet teachers are routinely condemned for not doing enough to help problem children. Where is the parent responsibility in these circumstances?

Promises of all kinds

Theme taken from current headlines - school bullying and the violence that often results from it. Liked the characters and their more mature ages & outlook on life. This is a love story without graphic sex or language. Enough conflict and moral dilemma to keep the pace up, but not a lot of surprises. I wasn't sure what the ending would be until the very end.

good murder mystery but a non-sympathetic "heroine"

the story takes place during WW ll in a small English village that has become a USAF base; the mystery involves the death/murder/poisoning of several red-headed USAF pilots; the plot and the solution are well handled. BUT..... the USAF officers are staying at the Manor House and the Lady Of The Manor (who is madly in love with for the Major, even tho he's a married man).is an absolute dorrmat; i wanted to slap her and tell her to wake up! her whole attitude seems much more WWl that WWll - it' as if the whole change in women's role and the slow breakdown of the rigid class system never happened here. . while the mystery is solved at the end of the book, there are several plot lines left dangling - i felt like i was reading a serialization of a larger novel.

If Kate writes it, buy it!

This series as well as her Pennyfoot Hotel series is (and I hate this word) awesome. I have never read a complete series before I found the two of these, now I have read both...you will not be disappointed. It (they) may take place in Edwardian and war time England, but the characters are so 'today'. And, get this. I sent an e-mail to Mrs. Kingsbury, which she actually answered. One of her secrets to success is a much younger husband! She is just a delightful person. She writes good, clean, interesting mysteries. Plus, a bonus: she is also writing under another name...but this time romances!

Delightful mystery

World War II is causing hardship for those left behind especially in the small village of Sitting Marsh where women and men unable too serve have to keep their spirits up as they try to do the work of the men now at the front. Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton of Manor House tries to set a good example helping when she is needed. The offices of the United States Army Air Force are billeted in her home so they can be near the base, but that doesn?t sit too well with the villagers.
Even though the Americans are fighting for their country, the people of Sitting Marsh resent their brashness, their flirting with the local women, and the quality of goods they have on the base while the villagers must make do with rationing. Four red haired men on the base have died after eating at the local pub and the authorities believe they were poisoned. Lady Elizabeth finds this intolerable and decides to do her best to flush out the perpetrator.
Kate Kingsbury?s manor house mysteries are charming and whimsical historical tales that give the reader an understanding of the hardships and the sorrows of village life during World War II. The heroine is a strong-minded woman who leads by example with action and kindness especially to those less fortunate than herself. The secondary cast is a delightful bunch of eccentrics, who add humor when the plot turns too maudlin.
