Second Book in the Coffee House Mystery Series
By Janet Boyer
"I didn't notice when he'd arrived. Not right away. Which was very unusual. Because ever since he'd first walked through the Blend's front door a few months back, I'd *always* noticed." -- From the book

In the first book of the Coffee House Series, On What Grounds, the story focused on Clare Cosi--manager of The Blend coffeehouse. Madame, her ex-mother-in-law, was a primary character, as was her ex-husband, Matteo. Added to the brew was a chilly-but-handsome detective, Clare's daughter Joy, an attempted murder at the cafe, and lots of coffee tips.

In the second book of the series, Through the Grinder, Clare has pretty much settled in to her old job in NYC. While chatting up some of her morning customers, she gets the idea to join an online dating service--mostly for her daughter. She also decides to attend The Blend's monthly Cappucino Connection for singles--much to the surprise of both Joy and her co-worker, Tucker!

While the first book focused on one "accident", this book centers around a serial killer--and *several* deaths. In the midst of all of these suspicious deaths (were they suicide...or murder?), Clare meets a charming man by the name of Bruce. Is he as magnificent as he seems to be...or is he, in fact, somehow involved in the deaths of three young women?

Through the Grinder repeats some of the coffee shorthand in the first book, but that's quickly gotten out of the way at the beginning. Coffee making tips, a few recipes, and SoHo archaelogy also make an appearance in this mystery.

Clare is as likable as ever, and I really relate to her because she's from Southwestern PA...even though she now lives in the Big Apple. I keep hoping she gets back with her ex, in some ways, and BOY...does the chemistry between them sizzle!

I gave this book only four stars because while it was almost as engaging and the first installment, the ending to this book was unnervingly, surprisingly sad. I realize that deaths occur in cozy mysteries--but they are usually "cozy" because there's not a whole lot of trauma or grisly descriptions.

So while the first book left me feeling satisfied and eager to start Through the Grinder, this one left me feeling a bit emotionlly deflated. But apparently, not TOO deflated...because I just ordered Latte Trouble (Book 3), Murder Most Frothy (Book 4), and Decaffeinated Corpse (Book 5, which was just released July 2007).

You can read my review of book 1 about the series itself, but like that book, Through the Grinder has believable characters, a keep-you-guessing mystery, and mouth-watering descriptions that leave you feeling like you're *right there*. I look forward to getting started on Book 3!

Perky reading, definitely not a grind but the killer's a drip!
By Dom Miliano
I am a sucker for mystery serials. I love Block's Burgler and the Grafton's Alphabet mysteries so I am the right guy to get into a NYC / Coffee / food series. The characters are likable enough without being cartoons. The dialogue is well written and the people each speak in his or her own voice (think about it, most well written books all have that characteristic in common). The killer is a bad, bad guy and obviously nuts; I love that kind of evil doer. And when he sets his sights on a main character, I could feel the excitement build. The pages turned a little faster too. The action moves along and the author fills in enough local color to make a NYC junkie (like me) happy and it adds another level of interest. (They even took a trip to Queens, for heaven's sake - very unusual.) The way NY's coffee culture is woven into the story works very well for me. NYC used to be a place where weak, bitter coffee was common, even in good restaurants. Now, since the first Starbucks opened over here in the mid-1990's, bad coffee, while it still exists, is getting rare indeed. And local places, like the one described in this story, really exist. The best have taken the basic Starbucks idea and put a NYC spin on it. The author makes me want seek out a place like the one in the story and hang out with friends with a hot cup of coffee.

I look forward to future installments and will now go back and read her earlier books.

Remember When, by Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb

Laine Tavish is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in the small town of Angel's Gap, Maryland, as the proprietor of Remember When, an antique treasures and gift shop. At least, that's what everyone in Angel's Gap thinks. They have no idea that she used to be Elaine O'Hara, daughter of the notorious con man Big Jack O'Hara. Or that she grew up moving from place to place, one step ahead of the law . . .

Laine's past has just caught up with her, though-in a very dramatic way. Her long-lost uncle suddenly turned up in her shop, leaving only a cryptic warning before dying in the street, run down by a car. Soon afterward, her home is ransacked. Now it's up to Laine, and a sexy stranger named Max Gannon, to find out who's chasing her, and why.

The answer lies in a hidden fortune-a fortune that will change not only Laine's life but also the lives of future generations. And danger and death will surround that fortune for years to come. Until New York City detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas gets on the case.

A thrill-ride of a novel that blends present-day romance and futuristic suspense, Remember When is a tale of deceit and secrets, of strong women and fascinating men-a brilliant combination of the incomparable talents of the two sides of Nora Roberts.

From Publishers Weekly
A perfect marriage of sensuality and suspense, this sparkling new offering from Roberts (Birthright, etc.) and her alter ego, Robb (Imitation in Death, etc.) takes readers on a two-part journey-first to the quaint burg of Angel's Gap, Md., and then to New York City, 56 years in the future. A multimillion-dollar diamond heist connects the two halves and fuels the first story, which focuses on the romance between sexy PI Max Gannon, who's working for the company that insured the diamonds, and smalltown antiques dealer Laine Tavish, daughter of a notorious thief. Laine has worked hard to overcome her heritage, but when her father's best friend is killed outside her shop, she becomes the target of a ruthless killer who thinks she has her father's share of the take. Because the story skips ahead in time, Max and Laine have little time to explore their affection for each other, but Roberts still manages to make their whirlwind romance both believable and charming. A nerve-shattering encounter between Laine and the villain shows Laine to be as capable and crafty as Lt. Eve Dallas, who's the driving force behind the novel's second half. Set in the year 2059, the continuation finds Eve on the trail of a murderer who's after the diamonds that were never recovered from the decades-old heist. Though the identity of the criminal is apparent midway through, Eve's charismatic personality and colorful crew-including her former thief husband, Roarke, and her partner, Peabody-keep the energy level high. A true master of her craft, Roberts has penned an exceptional tale that burns with all the brilliance and fire of a finely cut diamond.

From Booklist
New York Times best-selling, RITA award-winning Nora Roberts teams up with her pseudonymous writing personality, J. D. Robb, in this sexy, suspenseful novel centered on a fortune in stolen diamonds. Roberts begins things in present-day Maryland, where Laine Tavish, owner of an antiques and collectibles store, finds her attempts to erase any connection to her con-man father, Jack O'Hara, threatened when one of her father's "business associates" shows up and is killed in an automobile accident. Her father's involvement in a diamond heist brings not only a cold-blooded murderer to Laine's door but also insurance investigator Max Gannon, who won't rest until he finds the missing jewels. Robb adds a new twist to the tale 50 years in the future when Laine's granddaughter, Samantha Gannon, writes a best-selling book about the diamonds. The murder of Samantha's house-sitter brings Lieutenant Eve Dallas on the scene in search of a killer who will do anything to possess the sparkling stones. Robert's latest is another addictive blend of scintillating prose and sharply etched characters that will dazzle and delight her devoted readers. John Charles

Sunshine, by Robin Mckinley

“Sunshine” is what everyone calls her. She works long hours in her family’s coffeehouse, making her famous “Cinnamon Rolls as Big as Your Head,” Bitter Chocolate Death, Caramel Cataclysm, and other sugar-shock specials that keep the customers coming. She’s happy in her bakery—which her stepfather built specially for her—but sometimes she feels that she should have life outside the coffeehouse.

One evening she drives out to the lake to get away from her family, to be alone. There hasn’t been any trouble at the lake for years.

But there is trouble that night for Sunshine. She is abducted by a gang of vampires who shackle her to the wall of an abandoned mansion, within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight. Sunshine knows that he is a vampire and that she is to be his dinner. Yet when dawn breaks he has not attempted to harm her.

And now he needs her help to survive the day...

From Publishers Weekly
Buffyesque baker Rae "Sunshine" Seddon meets Count Dracula's hunky Byronic cousin in Newbery-Award-winner McKinley's first adult-and-then-some romp through the darkling streets of a spooky post-Voodoo Wars world. Now that human cities have been decimated, the vampiric elite holds one-fifth of the world's capital, threatening to control all the earth in less than 100 years, unless human SOFs (Special Other Forces) can hold them at bay by recruiting Sunshine, daughter of legendary sorcerer Onyx Blaise. As breathlessly narrated by Sunshine herself, the Cinnamon Roll Queen of Charlie's Coffeehouse, in the inchoate idiom of Britney, J. Lo and the Spice Girls, Sunshine's coming-of-magical-age launches when she is swarmed by noiseless vampires one night and chained in a decrepit ballroom as an entr‚e for mysterious, magnetic, half-starved Constantine, a powerful vampire whose mortal enemy Bo (short for Beauregard) shackled him there to perish slowly from daylight and deprivation. Most of the charm of this long venture into magic maturation derives from McKinley's keen ear and sensitive atmospherics, deft characterizations and clever juxtapositions of reality and the supernatural that might, just might, be lurking out there in "bad spots" right around a creepy urban corner or next to a deserted lake cabin. McKinley knows very well-and makes her readers believe-that "the insides of our own minds are the scariest things there are."

Rae Seddon, nicknamed Sunshine, lives a quiet life working at her stepfather's bakery. One night, she goes out to the lake for some peace and quiet. Big mistake. She is set upon by vampires, who take her to an old mansion. They chain her to the wall and leave her with another vampire, who is also chained. But the vampire, Constantine, doesn't try to eat her. Instead, he implores her to tell him stories to keep them both sane. Realizing she will have to save herself, Sunshine calls on the long-forgotten powers her grandmother began to cultivate in her when she was a child. She transforms her pocketknife into a key and unchains herself--and Constantine. Surprised, he agrees to flee with her when she offers to protect him from the sun with magic. They escape back to town, but Constantine knows his enemies won't be far behind, which means that he and Sunshine will have to face them together. A luminous, entrancing novel with an enthralling pair of characters at its heart. Kristine Huntley

Review
"Sunshine is a gripping, funny, page-turning, pretty much perfect work of magical literature that exists more or less at the unlikely crossroads of Chocolat.Interview With a Vampire. Misery.and the tale of Beauty and the Beast."It's not quite SF, and it's not really horror, and only kind of a love story, and it's all three while still being solidly Fantastique. It also does that nice thing where the author assumes the readers are smart, and she treats us like we're smart, and we purr and get smarter and work harder for all that. It'll be nominated for awards, and win them; in the meantime I really hope it finds its audience, which is, potentially, huge."
—Neil Gaiman

"Fabulous, fascinating, and a whole lot of fun. Step into Robin McKinley's thrilling, beautifully described world, where you will meet some interesting vampires and a lady who can deal with the creatures of the night."
—Jayne Ann Krentz

"I had no idea that blood and dessert could go together so well. I loved it!"—Amber Benson, "Tara" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Stunning. Fabulous.
By A Customer
I resisted reading this book for many months, despite hearing glowing reviews from friends. Which was strange, since generally I like Robin McKinley's work, but I just couldn't imagine reading yet another vampire story. What could she do that hadn't already been done to death (pardon the pun) by other authors?
But finally I gave in and bought the book, and was immediately amazed. McKinley has created a richly detailed alternate version of our world, where the survivors of the voodoo wars cling to the normal rhythms of life, in spite of the lingering threat from vampires and demons. The heroine Sunshine is immediately engaging and sympathetic. As she comes in to her powers, she is forced to face the dangers that others choose to ignore.
The relationship with the vampire Con is particularly well done. There are none of the cliches here. Con isn't handsome, he's not an immediate love interest, and there's a clear sense that he is alien to Sunshine's world. And yet somehow he and Sunshine manage to form an alliance of necessity that grows into something more.
I loved this world and these characters and was sad when the book ended. I truly hope she'll be inpsired to write a sequel someday.

Better than Chocolate (and not really a vampire book)
By A Customer
I should say from the start that I do believe Robin McKinley could rewrite the dictionary and it would be interesting, so I'm biased. I have good reason to be biased. McKinley's skills as a storyteller, as a writer, as a voice for her characters and her worlds is unparallelled.
Sunshine is not a book about vampires. They are there and they are central to the story, but the book is so much more than that. The best part of the book is that afore mentioned voice. I am not usually a fan of first person storytelling, but Sunshine is full of wry wit and a self-deprecatingly quirky combination of realism, independence, and fancy. I applaud the author for going in a new (if slightly Buffyesque) direction.
This book obviously isn't to everyone's taste, but the writing is still superb and I highly recommend it.
If it helps, my personal list of Robin McKinley favourites is: The Hero & the Crown, The Blue Sword, Deerskin, and now in 4th place -- Sunshine.

I salivitated through this book!!
By Kotori
It was with some trepidation that I opened the covers of this latest book by Robin McKinley. As the author of one of my favorite and formative books (Beauty), McKinley has not always provided the sort of reading experience I have been looking for. Deerskin was a particularly dark sojourn into the nasty depths of Brothers Grimm, and although the storytelling was masterful & memorable, it has not ranked as a favorite novel.

So a vampire tale by McKinley would be different, I knew.

The surprise came, when it's a fantastic kind of new!

With this book reviewers must endeavour please, not to give too much of the plot away. Half the suspense of reading the book is letting the story unfold and allowing the narrator to tell it in her own way & pace.

Sunshine works as a cook at a small cafe in a seedy and forgotten suburb after a magical holocaust has come across the world, reshaping the landscape of America as we know it.

She has an uneasy relationship with her mother, and finds herself having a closer acquaintance with a vampire than she had ever planned.

The gradual unveiling must not be clouded, thus I shall write no more, leaving it to you, the reader, to discover.

A story rich with ambiance, thick with texture taste and smell, menace hangs heavy in the air only to be washed away by the sharp sunlight and dizzying aroma of delicious cooking - all vividly imagined.

I salivitated through this book!

Without the hyperbole, McKinley proves again mastership of her craft, drawing readers on the adventure & into the world more solidly than ought to be possible.

Having read a library copy, I will now purchase the book as it's one I would love to keep - I had better make that two, because I know I won't be able to resist lending this fantastic book to friends!

Hoping there will be a sequel.

Case Files of the Tracker: True Stories from America's Greatest Outdoorsman, by Tom Brown

There is no greater tracker in America than Tom Brown. His intimate knowledge of the natural environment, by sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, has made him renowned as a detective of the outdoors. For decades he has been called upon to find missing children, escaped animals, dangerous criminals—anything that can walk, crawl, or lope through the wilderness. His hunting expertise, and his call to find harmony in nature, have been chronicled in several of his books including The Tracker and Awakening Spirits.

Now, in Case Files of the Tracker, Tom Brown reveals sixteen of his adventures for the first time, including:

·         A desperate race to reach a diabetic child before he suffers from insulin shock

·         The treacherous struggle to capture an armed convict that left Tom with a bullet in his back

·         His Tracking Team’s pursuit of a tiger on the loose in the wilds of New Jersey

Not as bad as the other reviews say...
By Mark
First full disclosure...this was the first book I've read by Tom Brown, after the title caught my eye in the bookstore. Also, after initially starting it, I did the standard Internet search to find out who he was and what he was about.
The book is a quick easy read and the subject is fascinating. I give it only 4 instead of 5 stars, because the writing is somewhat stilted. I don't fault him some of the redundancy, because I think he is intentionally trying to hammer some key points in his philosophy.

I think Tom Brown is approaching twilight time in his life, and no doubt he recognizes that. I think he is trying to make peace with some events in his past life. Not to ruin the book, but every story does not end with him carrying out a lost child on his shoulders to the adulation of the town or with him leading out an escaped fugitive in chains.

This book does not smack of "smug arrogance and bravado" that some of the other reviewers would lead you to believe...just the opposite, Tom Brown gives full disclosure concerning some of his mistakes and regrets from the various cases described in the book, he always gives full credit to his tracker students, and he approaches everything in the book: the wilderness, the unfortunate circumstances of other people, with respect and reverence.

I also find it ridiculous that some of the other reviewers criticized the fact that this book "wouldn't teach them how to track." Read the other books he's written, or attend his tracking school up north. If he took time in the book to describe "how he does it" it would probably take several pages and destroy the continuity of the story.
I can't see how anyone with a pulse would not enjoy this book. Enjoyable read. I see myself reading more of his books.

The Tracker shares his secrets
By Klaus
Tom Brown's new book was long awaited, finally it is here. His fans might have hoped to see it published already when the movie 'the hunted' (whose technical advisor Tom Brown was and which is even based on a story in this book) hit the cinemas, but due to reasons only the publisher know it arrived half a year later. For the reading audience this does not make any difference at all. The 'case files' which Brown presents in this book do not need a film as a support, they will come alive on their own and - compared to the rather dull movie - the material conveyed in the book is 100% true Tom Brown stuff. People who know Tom Brown will be surprised how deep he goes this time: He is not only sharing his great abilities as a tracker, but also all the intense personal and intimate emotions he experiences being on a tracking case. And a big tracking adventure - in Brown`s perspective - is the whole life, because as a tracker tracking never stops. And it's not a mystic knowledge limited to few chosen ones but an art and science open to anybody who is willing to show passion and invest long hours of 'dirt time' - just as Master Tracker Tom Brown did over decades.
All of his stories are exciting to read (some like 'My Frankenstein' are a little bit too macho-style in my opinion), most have a sad ending in common but at the same time they are very rich when it comes to universal messages beyond the physical evidence. Tracking as the art of seeing, feeling and knowing.
So it is a great book to read which talks to us at the same time on different and very subtle levels.

When Bobby died in a car wreck with another woman at his side, Bena was left with five kids, a small house, and a big empty place in her heart. Five years later, she's got two daughters who've run off with no-good men, a backyard full of marijuana plants none of her kids will own up to, and a semi-personal relationship with Jesus. But she's trying. And when she's ready to invest again in love, she knows what she wants: Lucky McKale. And despite the fact that he's married, he seems to want her too...

From Publishers Weekly
Sixth-grade teacher Bena Eckerd's biggest fault outside of crying hysterically every time she walks into a church is to blame herself for "messing up" every time life deals her a low blow. She was happily married to Bob, or so she thought, until he died in a car accident with another woman at his side. She thinks she has raised her five children well, until her two oldest daughters run off with no-account men, her third moves away with Bena's arch rival, and her eldest son chooses the one woman in the world whose very name causes Bena anguish. She can't believe that good-natured mailman Lucky McKale really loves her, since he is married to Sue Cox, the most beautiful and richest woman in Baxter County, Ala. But after Sue Cox herself agrees to a divorce and blesses their union, Bena finally feels she can accept Lucky's proposal. A new kind of domestic unit is formed, with exes and stepchildren integrated into one colorful family. Then disaster strikes Lucky disappears. Kincaid is both warmhearted and clear-eyed about the compromises people make to find happiness. Bena and her children are fully dimensional, good at sassy give-and-take and credible in both mundane and dramatic confrontations. Race relationships are gently defined (Bena's best friend is Mayfred, a black colleague), and there's straight talk about religious faith and feminine jealousy and solidarity. Kincaid never lets sentimentality or the sitcom syndrome invade a lively and authentic story of a resilient woman's doubts, troubles, heartbreak and survival, and she crafts her tale with charm, humor and wise understanding. Agent, Liz Darhansoff. Literary Guild selection. (May 17)Forecast: This novel should take off with strong regional sales in the South, and could achieve a wider audience through word of mouth.

From Booklist
What a mess! The family in Kincaid's third novel is a fascinating mess of southern charm. Verbena (Bena for short) is an exceptionally nice sixth-grade teacher in Alabama, who has five almost-grown kids and a nice husband named Bobby. Then Bobby is killed in an auto crash, and--surprise--he wasn't alone. Then Bena's oldest son brings his new girlfriend, the younger sister of Bobby's lover, home for dinner. And she lets slip that a baby also died in the car crash. Kincaid has lots more in store for the ever-resilient Bena, who seems perfectly capable of standing up to everything the twisting and turning plot throws at her. Through it all, Kincaid's writing is as real as it is delightful. Take this small piece of teacher Bena's description of junior high: "Skin broke out, hearts broke open, lockers were broken into, heads got busted, kids got busted. Lies got told and the truth got told, too--and both were terrifying." Bena's life is kinda like that. She's good, and so is her story. Peggy Barber

It's all about the characters
By Bearette24
As with "As Hot As It Was You Ought to Thank Me," Nanci Kincaid's most recent novel, "Verbena" gets off to a slow start, but becomes engrossing, thanks to quirky characters and an eventful plot.

Bena, the heroine of the story, loses her husband at the beginning of the novel. He dies in a car accident, with another woman in the car. As she comes to terms with his infidelity, she develops a close friendship with the neighborhood mailman, Lucky, a friend of her husband's, whose wife is in rehab.

Although Bena and her five children face a whole soap opera's worth of catastrophes and disasters, the tone of the book is almost never sentimental. Instead, it is told in a distinctive voice, sharp and intelligent, with characters you won't forget.

One of the nicest things about this book, although it's subtle and you're not beaten over the head with it, is how Bena welcomes almost everyone into her house, even if it's under duress at first, and the characters as a whole are very forgiving about each other's imperfections. It makes you feel as if the characters form one great big family that you, as the reader, feel lucky to be a part of.

WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS, PLEASE MAKE LEMONADE ~~~~
By Pamela A. Poddany
Nanci Kincaid DOES NOT disappoint with her novel VERBENA. I LOVE all of Miss Kincaid's works and this one is well worth every minute you spend reading it. She is Southern lit at its BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!

Verbena -- known as Bena -- has had a never-a-dull-moment life. Her first hubby is killed in an accident with another woman in the car with him and Bena is left with five children to raise on her own. She is an elementary teacher and her life is full to spilling over. With her job, children, neighbors, and life events that just keep happening to her, she never has a dull moment.

As life speeds on, things take a turn for the worse, as sometimes things will do in life. Unfortunately, as her children get older and marry, their choices bring heartache into Bena's life. However, she carries on and struggles along. I found myself admiring her good sense of humor, her strength, and her willingness to go on with a smile on her face even when her heart was breaking. Wish I could do that!!!!!

In her life there has always been her mailman, a wonderful man named Lucky. Unfortunately, Lucky is married to Sue Cox. {What cracked me up totally was how the author called the Sue Cox character Sue Cox as if that was her given name.} Just a chuckle every time.

When Lucky and Sue Cox come into her life, things change and Bena's life is again twisted, turned, and crazy. Life turns sweet for Bena and she is a happy and loved woman again! READ THIS BOOK.

This book is full of Southern charm and believeable events. I found myself laughing out loud and also crying. There are some very sad moments in this book; however, they make the book what it is. And what it is is EXCELLENT reading.

Whatever Nanci Kincaid has as an author, she has an abundance of it and she has it goin' on. I LOVE her books. I only have a few more to read so I am hoping and praying she is busy writing her next excellent reading adventure for all of us to enjoy.

If you love Southern fiction -- if you love good, true-to-life characters -- if you love surprises -- if you love a good cry -- if you love that "feel good" feeling about life and people -- then you will love this book. Don't miss this book. You will find it good, cozy, down-home reading and will love every part of it. It is NOT predictable and you will not guess what is going to happen.

Thanks again, Miss Kincaid, for more good reading.

Thank you!!

Pam

The Extravaganza of the Seas is a five-thousand-ton cash cow, a top-heavy tub whose sole function is to carry gamblers three miles from the Florida coast, take their money, then bring them back so they can find more money. In the middle of a tropical storm one night, these characters are among the passengers it carries: Fay Benton, a single mom and cocktail waitress desperate for something to go right for once; Johnny and the Contusions, a ship's band with so little talent they are . . . well, the ship's band; Arnold and Phil, two refugees from the Beaux Arts Senior Center; Lou Tarant, a wide, bald man who has killed nine people, though none recently; and an assortment of uglies whose job it is to facilitate the ship's true business, which is money-laundering or drug-smuggling or . . . something.

From Publishers Weekly
Humorist Barry (Big Trouble) brings together a motley group of South Florida eccentrics on an ill-fated casino boat voyage in his second full-length comic mystery novel. A tropical storm is bearing down on the Florida coast, but the Extravaganza of the Seas, a luxury gambling ship, sets sail on its nightly excursion in spite of the weather. Aboard are Fay Benton, an attractive cocktail waitress trying to make ends meet for her kid; a collection of pot-smoking would-be rockers (at least one of whom lives with his mother) who make up the ship's band, Johnny and the Contusions; a pair of wise-cracking octogenarians who've escaped an extended-care facility; and some Mafia-connected gangsters who use the ship's nightly voyages to smuggle drugs onto the mainland. Bobby Kemp, the ship's titular owner, insists that the Extravaganza go out in the storm because he's chosen this night to hijack the drug deal. In the background, a local television station plays a role straight from Keystone Kops as its reporters frantically cover the approaching storm with consistently fatal results. Barry once again showcases his gently satiric style, with barbs aimed at overbearing mothers, corrupt officials, inept authorities and, of course, the American crime novel itself, which he sends up with absurd plotting, astronomical body count and plenty of gratuitous nudity and (PG-rated) sex. Belying self-deprecating disclaimers about his talent for fiction, Barry demonstrates that he can draw some captivating characters and keep a reader's attention in spite of-or perhaps because of-slapstick antics and a fascination with scatology.

From Library Journal
Humorist Barry demonstrates once again that he has reached that plateau of success where he can do no wrong-almost. This second novel represents something of a decline from Big Trouble, his first venture into fiction, which emerged as an incident-crowded mystery topped off with rapid-fire laughs and a dash of satire. This time, the laughs are not much more than titters, and the incidents are only intermittently compelling. In brief, the story is built around events on one of the floating casinos that takes paying customers three miles off the Florida coast each night to gamble. It leads readers into a crazy complexity of money laundering, drug dealing, murder, sex, violence, hijacking, and undercover work. As it is written by Barry, the book probably will meet with a certain amount of popular favor, but a caveat is in order: This is not the Barry of his syndicated columns or his nonfiction books. As he himself puts it, "This book contains some bad words," which he justifies by saying that his "unsavory characters" talk that way. A likely story.

From Booklist
Barry delivers plenty of laughs and action in his second foray into fiction, following Big Trouble (1999). Extravaganza of the Seas is a gambling boat owned by one of the biggest swindlers in all of Florida, Bobby Kemp. However, Kemp himself is being swindled by some local but powerful thugs. Lou Tarant and his boys are running a smuggling business on the Extravaganza, and Kemp is mad that he doesn't get a kickback. On the night of a furious tropical storm, Kemp gets some thugs of his own and decides to take action. Of course, Barry treats us to amusing depictions of some of the other characters on the ship: Fay, an overworked waitress; Wally, a member of the ship's band; and Arnie and Phil, on the lam from their senior center after a hilarious escape. When Kemp's plan goes disastrously awry, this colorful cast of characters is thrust into the middle of a fight between the double-crossing thugs. Barry garners plenty of laughs, especially in the scenes involving the senior center and its residents, as well as those involving a hapless, weather-obsessed news station. Fans of outlandish comic fiction, as well as Barry's columns, will find much to enjoy here. Kristine Huntley

As funny in fiction as he is in the newspaper!
By Blake Petit
In his second novel, Dave Barry has taken his readers out to sea for a fast-paced action yarn that is as funny as it is exciting.
Tricky Business is a real ensemble story about a casino ship out of Miami that is used to launder money and traffic in narcotics, unbeknownst to the patrons or most of the staff. On the day this story takes place (all in one day -- difficult to do and keep it exciting, but Barry does it), the ship is going out into Tropical Storm Hector, despite all safety warnings to the contrary, because of a shipment of drugs and cash too big to let go. The characters include a musician with a crush on a cocktail waitress, a pair of old men who just want out of their retirement home, a captain who wanted to give up a life of crime, a man in a giant pink conch costume, some stupid criminals, some smart criminals and the crew of a TV news station that suffer a freak chain of events I suspect many of us here on the Gulf Coast secretly wish would happen to REAL news anchors when they start scaremongering and stupid reporting whenever a storm hits.
Like Barrys first novel, Big Trouble, the dialogue and descriptions take a plot that would work just as well in a hardcore drama and make it a good, lighthearted comedy that has a real sweetness to it at the end. Fans of Dave Barry, the funniest columnist in America, are probably lining up for this book already, but fans of a good action comedy will enjoy it too.

What does a giant pink conch, gas passing croupier, cocktail waitress/Coast Guard employee, horny cover band drummer and a gaggle of thugs have in common? Nothing, unless they're aboard a cruise ship in Dave Barry's "Tricky Business." Not quite as good as his first novel, "Big Trouble," but still pretty good, "Tricky," features Barry column staples: bodily function jokes, insights on the differences between the sexes - but those considering giving this book to young Barry fans, would do well to read the foreword, in which he states not one, but three times, that THIS BOOK CONTAINS SOME BAD WORDS. (Actually, more than a few.) Kudos for the warning, although those who are the most likely to get offended, probably won't read it.

Like "Big Trouble," "Tricky" has a plot hard to sum up in a few words, but involves sharply drawn "good" guys who eventually wind up in a contained space with the (far too many one syllable named) bad guys and mayhem results, along with an explanation of why women never seem to fart. Good read although I had to admit I missed Puggy, of the first book.

Unabridged audio.
This time around Dave Barry's rag-tag bunch of characters all have one thing in common. They will all be passengers or hired help on a casino boat that will float about three miles off the coast of Florida. As usual there is a wide assortment of characters. There are a couple old folks who escaped a retirement home, a band called 'Johnny and the Contusions' whose main goal is to be high, drug runners, cocktail waitress's and a few others. All play a major role in this laugh out loud story.
The reader, Dick Hill, is a very talented voice actor. From his mobster voice to his old man voice, the inflections put forth are truly hilarious.
Highly recommended.

An astonishing book with incredible depth of spirit.
By Frank Bierbrauer
I had recently read "The Tracker" by Tom Brown Jr. and thought it a remarkable book. It was the shear enthusiasm and telling of the truth that made it so inspirational. It was a kind of retelling of the innocence of his boyhood. He had been extremely lucky in being taught by Stalking Wolf, the Apache shaman, and grandfather of his best friend Rick. He was 83 at the time and became more than a mentor to the 8 year old Tom. Stalking Wolf epitomised the great teacher everyone seeks but does not find in today's world where too many people have isolated themselves from the natural world.

In this second book, which really tells of his time as a young man in his late teens and twenties, Tom Brown writes in a much more mature style although never losing that close connection he has with the natural world or in fact with himself. He is never afraid to truly feel in any situation, a rare quality in any man today. After having learned much that Stalking Wolf could teach him he made his own way living in the wilderness in every area of the US for long periods of time and gaining the experience and connections that make him a great tracker and survivor. At the same time he feels somewhat lost in the modern world and has doubts whether he is making the right choices in life. While his relations and friends tell him to live like others, get a job, get married, have kids etc he only feels at home in the woods. On the other hand Stalking Wolf's words telling to be at home anywhere in the world remain in his mind. It is because the people surrounding him do not know their way that he is confused. Slowly through many experiences, including the tracking of his old teacher as he goes for his final walk, Tom Brown becomes a spirit tracker on the first stage to the keen sight which Stalking Wolf had in abundance in his ability to see the Spirit that moves in all things in action in the world.

An astonishing book with incredible depth of spirit.

A worthwhile follow-up to "The Tracker"
By davido@gasullivan.com
Though not as quite as inspired as the tracker was, the search continues the story of Tom's life in the outdoors and the further challenges he put himself through

Tom Brown Jr's "as told to" authors
By Diana S. Daniels
Tom Brown Jr. has led a fascinating life due to his tracking skills. Tracker and Search were written with two different authors, and that made all the difference. Tracker is not just an account of an interesting lifestyle, it is a work of literature. The Tracker author told Tom's story with sensitivity, intelligence and depth. I read and reread whole paragraphs because of the beautiful use of language. It was a spiritual/philosophical work and I hated to finish reading it; the images created were so moving. Clearly, Brown knows a whole lot more about tracking than he does writing, which explains the downgrading of the writing and depth of Search.

Amazon.com Review
This first collection of short stories by Dick Francis (author of 10 Lb. Penalty and more than 30 other horseracing mysteries) pulls together five new tales with eight that have appeared scattered in periodicals over the last three decades. One of the pleasures of his stories is witnessing the breadth and variety within Francis's racetrack milieu. In "Dead on Red," a jealous jockey named Davey Rockman hires Emil Jacques, a French assassin and gun collector, to kill the famed rider who stole his job; but Rockman is haunted by his deed much in the same way as is the protagonist in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." "Raid at Kingdom Hill" tells of Tricksy Wilcox's scheme for a not-so-bright bomb scare, a plan that still might yield the payoff of a lifetime. "Collision Course" is free of murder but frames a delightful conflict between an out-of-work newspaperman and a bounder whose faux manners threaten to bring him down at the peak of his racing syndicate career. The Kentucky Derby story, "The Gift," follows Fred Collyer, a drunken writer who overhears plans for a major racing swindle and struggles against alcohol to publish the story by his deadline. And the collection ends with a what-if story called "Haig's Death" that examines the consequences of the sudden passing of Christopher Haig, an animal feed consultant and race-meeting judge.

Poe, who most historians of literature credit as the creator of the short story, declared that a good short story should have nothing extraneous. Francis's stories, for the most part, obey Poe's dictum. Each character and description fits tightly into an unfolding plan so that the mystery or twist is revealed with a satisfying economy of words. While Field of 13 will appeal to Francis loyalists, newcomers, too, will find much to relish in the short fiction of this mystery grand master. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Publishers Weekly
Though nearly two score of his novels have come to print, Francis has published only eight short stories in his 41 years as a bestselling author. That octet, composed mostly in the 1970s and initially appearing in various journals (Sports Illustrated, the Times of London, etc.), is reprinted here, along with five new tales, each introduced in brief by Francis. There's not a slacker among them, though few champions either. The earliest yarn, "Carrot for a Chestnut," dating from 1970 (eight years after Francis's first novel), is typical, presenting a morally ordered universe in which malefactors get their due, albeit commonly through indirect means. Here, a jockey who bends a race by feeding a horse a drugged carrot receives his comeuppance by losing his concentration as a result of his crime and getting involved in a nasty accident; as in most of the stories, there's a light twist to the ending. Horse racing figures in every entry, of course. Sometimes it's the focus of a crime?as in "Blind Chance," in which a blind boy picks up on how bettors are getting inside info on races with photo finishes. Sometimes, it's only background, as in "Collision Course," about how a fired newspaper editor hoists poetic justice upon a horrid restaurateur/horse trainer. Most of the stories are superficially clever, but below the quick plotting there's emotional depth; in "Spring Fever," for instance, Francis plumbs the innocent desperation of unrequited December-May love. And throughout there is Francis's voice, strong, smart, ironic, developed even at the beginning but maturing in timbre as he hones his skill. Even more than the horse racing, this voice is the tie that binds these 13 tales into a charmed entertainment.

Dick Francis never disappoints
By CC-in-VA
Dick Francis fans will enjoy these stories, although of course there's not as much character development OR varied scenes and action as in one of his full-length novels. The writing is, as always with Francis, excellent. Each story is quite different, and many have a 'twist' at the end that adds to the fun. I found myself thinking about the characters and the plots long after I had finished reading each tale. I think the best way to approach this collection would be to read one story at a time, perhaps every day or two, rather than going through the entire volume at one sitting. But however you attack the book, I think you will have a very good time with it and may want to return and re-read some of the stories over again.

Vintage Dick Francis - but beware, it's short stories

I have enjoyed Dick Francis novels for many years. I mail ordered this book, and was somewhat dismayed to discover that it is a collection of short stories - not my favorite format. They are enjoyable, and well written short stories, but there isn't enough room for much character development.

I enjoyed this. The stories were short enough that I could read an entire one each night (usually I only get a chapter or two read). Fun to read a pre-Internet/Google/IPhone world story, though there was one story that mentioned a laptop, but was written in 1974. I know an effort was made in this edition to update the $$ amounts to reflect 201x dollars.
