In this honest and insightful she said/she said guide, sixteen-year-old Natalie Fuller tells all about her adventures and misadventures from ages thirteen through sixteen. Her brother, Greg, fills in on the later teen years. And Doris, the questioning, caring (and occasionally shell-shocked) mom offers her take on such mildly eye-opening and downright life-threatening topics as...

alcohol and other drugs * sex and dating * school * appearances * partying * stealing * obsessions * secrets * lying

Promise You Won't Freak Out gives parents a complete picture of how teens really think, feel, and act. And it gives kids a better understanding of why this picture freaks their parents out. For both, it offers some very helpful information-and an inspiring example of successful parent/teen communication.

Amazon.com Review
When teens misbehave, sometimes they break the law, but every time, they break your heart. Among other horrors, Doris Fuller has lived to tell the story of her daughter Natalie crossing state lines to attend a keg party at the house of an older boy she hardly knew--after lying by saying she'd be at a sleepover. Fortunately, this was during Natalie's self-described "wild" phase, which petered out after a couple of unpleasant binge-drinking episodes during her sophomore year of high school. For any parent wishing their teen's hedonistic phase would fade away--or parents in such denial that they don't think their kid is capable of being wild--Promise Me will provide much guidance for navigating the emotional quagmire of adolescence.

Doris and Natalie provide mother-and-daughter perspectives on school, friends, dating, drug use, and sex, revealing an inherited self-deprecating sense of humor as well as a remarkable relationship that eventually came to be centered on mutual trust. Unlike some parents she knows, Doris doesn't depend on spy-ware, snooping, or diary reading to find out what Natalie's up to. Instead, she taps her journalism background to ask oblique questions that tend to get Natalie talking, not rolling her eyes or running to her room. Doris's list of useful questions for each topic may be too effective; she admits it was nearly impossible to act nonchalant when Natalie confessed that a 14-year-old friend had been experimenting with oral sex. (She also provides a helpful glossary of slang sexual expressions).

When Natalie does push the limits, Doris (generally) implements appropriate consequences for her to face. In the case of the out-of-state kegger, that meant no more car privileges for two months. (It's likely there's a copy of Parenting with Love and Logic on the bookshelf at their house.) Some of the most comically eye-opening passages in Promise Me feature tales of teens whose parents were extremely strict, only to find that their teen went to great lengths to hide hell-raising behavior from them (as in the case of the nerdy reverend's daughter who gets pregnant). Fuller's found the recipe for building trust and respect from teenagers, and parents would do well to heed her hard-earned advice. -- Erica Jorgensen

The best book about modern teens I've ever read
By A Customer
This book is terrific. Fascinating, provocative, funny, entertaining, wise.
I couldn't put it down. The alternating voices of mother and daughter give it a liveliness and an energy that captivated me utterly. This is stuff for which all moms (in particular) should have an inexhaustible appetite.
The authors do a sensitive and compelling job of communicating the drawbacks of many of the questionable behaviors that are discussed. Any parent who shares it with their teen will send a clear signal about the value of open communication,

Better than the rest
By A Customer
After reading "Reviving Ophelia", "Queen Bees and Wanna Bes", and "Odd Girl Out", I have to say that this book was the most helpful (and the least scholarly). I make no judgments on the relationships between these two attributes, but this book offered the most practical advice. My daughter is 12, so a lot of the information is yet to come into play, but I feel better about having it. I especially enjoyed the discussion of parents who are in denial that their darling daughters would ever do such things. There's a lot of that thinking going on among the parents of my daughters friends, and it's good to hear someone keeping it real.

Fun, Frank and Fascinating
By A Customer
Written with a fine sense of humor and remarkable candor, "Promise You Won't Freak Out" provides entertaining and informative reading. The writing is wonderful, crisp and clear; the information, though sometimes frightening, is priceless for parents and useful for the rising teen; and the illustration of communication between teen and parent is heartwarming and encouraging.
The authors skillfully hide sound, sage advice and information in delightful anecdotes that depict a teen's mindset and a parent's ability to survive it. At the end of each chapter, Doris and Natalie offer "Conversation Starters," questions to help parent or child broach subjects such as sex, booze, drugs, etc. Doris (the mom) occasionally weighs in with secrets of how she acts as a "guerilla mom" to break the teen code of silence.
A few parents may choose not to believe the frank description of some actions and thoughts of today's teens while some teens may wish that their parents hadn't read it at all! But parents and teens alike will find "Promise" an unforgettable, sometimes hilarious, and always enjoyable adventure.

Amazon.com Review
When twelve-year-old muskrat trapper Letty West stumbles on the naked bodies of Jane Warr and Deon Cash, deep in the snowy woods of northern Minnesota, it's more than another bizarre episode in her already unusual life, as Lucas Davenport discovers in this new outing in Sandford's popular series featuring the midwestern lawman who moonlights as a computer game designer. Lucas has a new wife, a new baby, and a new job as a political troubleshooter for his old boss Rose Marie Roux, but the blunt-spoken Davenport's instructions to hush the racially charged implications of what looks suspiciously like a lynching won't deter him from whomever left Warr and Cash twisting in the wind. The well-peopled plot, involving a hot car ring, an ex-nun who smuggles cancer drugs over the Canadian border, and the usual internecine wranglings between the FBI, the local cops, and Davenport, races to a satisfying denouement, but this time it's a little girl with a difficult past and an uncertain future who lingers in the reader's mind. Fortunately, Sandford comes up with an ending that makes it all but certain that his fans will meet her again. Meanwhile, all the author's usual trademarks are on display--excellent writing, an interesting scenario, and terrific pacing. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Sandford gets back to basics in this stellar 14th installment of his hugely popular Prey series, focusing on the long-standing duo of Davenport and Capslock. As the novel begins, the indomitable Lucas Davenport (now happily married, a contented father and bored out of his mind) is slogging through the northern tundra of Broderick, Minn., to inspect the naked dangling corpses of a white woman and black man ("They were frozen. Like Popsicles.") that have shocked the locals as well as Minnesota's governor with the ugly specter of a lynching. Davenport, now more or less a free agent for the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension ("I kick people's asses"), is unleashed by the governor, giving Davenport and his scruffy sidekick, Del Capslock, a chance to escape their square city lives and catch the villain(s) while staving off the media vultures, Sandford's trademark subplot. As in previous novels, the original crime (rendered in a truly horrific opening sequence) is merely the gateway to a deeper, more insidious criminal enterprise, this one an international labyrinth of stolen cars, drugs, gambling and kidnapping. Some truly vicious familial machinations in the small town contrast well with Davenport's staid and stable home life. Another pleasant surprise is the precocious Letty West, whose awakening teenage sensibilities make an impression on Davenport. Sandford's usual background details (readers will learn how to run a muskrat trapline and how an Indian casino operates) are deftly woven into the fabric. This latest installment in a series now a decade and a half old is vintage Sandford.

From Booklist
A black man and a white woman are discovered hanging from a tree in northern Minnesota. Both are naked. The media labels the crime a lynching, which trumps a run-of-the-mill double murder. Fearing that he'll be a one-term wonder if the case isn't solved quickly, the governor of Minnesota calls Lucas Davenport, who has accepted an appointment to the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The only witness he and his partner, Del Capstock, have is Letty West. She's a 12-year-old who manages for her alcoholic mother and herself by trapping muskrat and raccoon. Her dilapidated home is a mere 200 yards from the hanging tree. She saw headlights on the night of the killing and found the bodies the next morning when she set about clearing her trap lines. She's a tough kid, knows everybody in her small town of Broderick, and is able to provide enough info on the car to help lead Davenport to the killer. But there's no arrest to be made because the killer and his wife have been killed just prior to Lucas' arrival. The crimes must have a common thread, but Lucas can't find it. This fifteenth Prey novel is suspenseful and cleverly plotted, and the denouement is an exhilarating example of ultimate justice convincingly delivered. Sandford has another best-seller here, and it's one of the better entries in a fine series. Wes Lukowsky

John Sandford continues to ply his trade....
By L. Quido
with another entry in his fine "Prey" series, a group of books centered on Lucas Davenport, "the richest cop in Minnesota" (rich because he also designs video games).
Sandford set the stage for change at the conclusion of his last book, letting the reader percolate on what would be the differences in Lucas when he becomes an active father, and when he leaves the police department for a quasi-bureaucratic governmental position in a new state department headed by his old boss, Rose Marie Roux. Wisely, although Sandford went forward with these changes, the impact was streamlined by having 90% of the book's action happen in rural northern Minnesota, in the fictional small town of Broderick. Family man Lucas still has his best sidekick, Del, gainfully employed with him -- and married or not, he still can spot and appreciate a great looking woman. Some things never change!
The first two murders may be motivated by racial hatred - one victim is black, and his significant other is white...they are found brutally slain and hanging from a barren tree in the frosty Minnesota winter. There's so much odd and unusual "stuff" going on in Broderick, it's difficult for Lucas & Del to pin down the any information about the murders, and the killings continue.
Sandford manages to deftly interweave his social viewpoints -- his lack of respect for the media, his vague unsettlement with the way that federal, state and local authorities sometimes impede each other to solve a case that has generated media attention, and most importantly, his support of a little known grass roots campaign that is quietly smuggling prescription drugs from Canada to US patients who need and can't afford them.
Unlike many other writers of this genre, Sandford can keep both his tale of the crime and his social commentary moving in the same direction -- one does not eclipse or slow down the other.
The book is also notable in that it provides a lot of insight into tribal casinos...a staple of the Minnesota scenery in the last decade. Tribal casinos have changed rural Minnesota in many ways, and Sandford captures this contrast of big city activity with the rural tundra.
The prize of the novel, as many readers have commented, is new character Letty West, who will doubtless appear in future instalments. A precocious 12-year old, Letty's like many rural kids that come from dysfunctional single parent families....in the cities, kids from these homes tend to run with gangs...in the country, they tend to be loners, with old souls. Letty is such a character, and she's the best addition to the series in a long time.
This may not be the finest of Sandford's series, but its darn close! Don't wait for the paperback!

fine police procedural
By A Customer
A lot has changed for Lucas Davenport in the last year. He married the love of his life Weather and they have an infant son and have moved into a new home with a separate apartment for the nanny/housekeeper. Rose Marie Roux is still Lucas's boss but she is now the Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner and Lucas reports directly to her and the governor as the Director in the Office of Regional Studies which is a part of The Bureau of Criminal Apprehensions.
Lucas gets the police cases that the local departments are not equipped to deal with or are political hot potatoes. His latest case involves a white woman and a black man hung by a rope to a tree and strangled to death. Lucas doesn't take long to identify the killer but when he goes to arrest him, he finds someone already murdered the perpetrator and his wife. Lucas returns to the small Northern Minnesota town of Broderick to find another killer but he doesn't realize that the small bucolic town is a cesspool of crime and corruption, a place where his homicide is interrelated to a series of other felonious acts.
There is nobody who writes a police procedural better than John Sandford. His plots are so complex that readers find themselves unable to put the book down until the last page is turned and all the loose ends are sewn up. NAKED PREY is one of the best novels in the series because the hero has undergone some radical changes both in his personal and professional life and that keeps the series fresh. This is a must read for fans of cop thrillers.

Undoubtedly, Sandford's Best Lucas Davenport Novel
By Bookreporter
NAKED PREY is the thirteenth of John Sandford's Lucas Davenport mysteries, the thirteenth in thirteen years actually. The series has had its ups and, around WINTER PREY or NIGHT PREY, downs, but for the most part, Sandford has written consistently tight, suspenseful thrillers about the Minnesota police investigator who styles himself quite accurately as the state's richest cop. Nothing that has come before, however, will prepare Sandford's and Davenport's former and current fans for NAKED PREY.
NAKED PREY is far and away Sandford's best, a novel that succeeds on so many levels that it will leave readers shaking their heads in wonder. It begins and ends with brutal murders --- the first is a puzzle and the last is a given, but both are ultimately satisfying. What occurs in between --- the plotting, the characterization, the pacing --- will make you wish that NAKED PREY was twice as long.
NAKED PREY finds Davenport comfortably ensconced in a position known as "Director --- Office of Regional Studies," which in turn is part of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Davenport reports directly to his old boss, former Minneapolis police chief Rose Marie Roux, and through her to the governor. Davenport's job is to fix things (the actual terminology that Sandford employs is a bit more, uh, graphic than that) when a crime on the local level becomes too complicated or touchy.
When a black man and white woman are found dead, victims of an apparent lynching in upstate Minnesota, the call goes out to Davenport to get the job done. Davenport and his running partner, Del Capslock, are soon in the tiny town of Broderick in rural Custer County investigating the deaths, and lives, of Jane Warr and Deon Cash. Davenport slowly discovers that there is far more going on in the quiet streets of Broderick than they would ever suspect.
The murders of Warr and Cash are only the first of many that take place during the course of NAKED PREY. Sandford pulls a really neat trick here. The reader gradually finds out what is going on --- and there is quite a bit --- but is ahead of the curve. The suspense comes into play as the reader watches Davenport painstakingly work his way through the labyrinth of secrets that Broderick holds to his heart. And, as NAKED PREY reaches its conclusion, the question becomes not how Davenport finds out who is behind the multiple murders, but whether he'll find out. And don't presuppose that you already know the answer to that one.
Readers who have stuck with the Davenport series since its inception will find that Sandford, aiming for the moon and stars, has reached the moon and stars. For those who haven't read a Davenport book for a while, or who are unfamiliar with the series, NAKED PREY is the place to jump on, right now. Whether you're looking for a police procedural series that is new to you or not, you need to become familiar with Lucas Davenport and you need to start with NAKED PREY. Very highly recommended.

Amazon.com Review
With assured confidence and a master's economy of means, Robert B. Parker, who is best known for his Spenser series, delivers one of his finest, most absorbing works yet. This third entry in the Jesse Stone series finds Stone--a former LAPD cop fired for drinking on the job--serving as chief of police in the town of Paradise, Massachusetts, and investigating the murder of a teenaged girl whose decomposed body turns up in the local lake. As he follows slender threads of evidence into an ugly world of exploited teens, several subplots crisscross, keeping things lively.

But Jesse's struggle with alcohol and his loving, troubled relationship with his ex-wife are at least as compelling as the external plot events. Parker doesn't usually give his characters much of an inner life, but here--in deftly compressed prose, much of it dialog--he paints an understated, believable portrait of a tough guy grappling with tough issues. This smooth-reading book goes down easy but packs a surprising wallop. --Nicholas H. Allison

From Publishers Weekly
Melancholy shadows this third, beautifully wrought Jesse Stone mystery; rarely if ever has Parker's fiction conveyed with such solemn intensity the challenge of living a good life in a world of sin. Jesse, erstwhile drunk and now sheriff of small-town Paradise, Mass., tackles two criminal and two personal mysteries here: the murder of a teenage girl found shot dead in a local lake, and the chronic beating of a local wife by her husband; the conundrum of Jesse's attraction to alcohol, and the mess of his love life, shaped by his dependence upon his estranged wife but encompassing a highly sexed affair with a school principal. The search for the identity and the killer of the girl brings Jesse, as such investigations traditionally do, into the realm of high society the prime suspect is a bestselling writer but also to the mean streets of Boston, where the sheriff parries with Gino Fish and Vinnie Morris (outlaws borrowed from the Spenser series). Dogged police work, a hot-to-trot wife, child prostitutes, the solace of baseball, hard-guy banter these and more classic elements inform and bolster this immensely satisfying tale. As usual with Parker these days, though, the book's ultimate pleasure lies in the words, suffused with a tough compassion won only through years of living, presented in prose whose impeccability speaks of decades of careful writing. (Oct.)Forecast: This is Parker's third outstanding novel of the year, after Potshot and Gunman's Rhapsody. To promote it, he plans a vigorous author tour. Expect high interest and sales.

From School Library Journal
Parker here gives Jesse Stone his third case (after Night Passage and Trouble in Paradise), which involves the murder of a prodigal daughter and hardly any clues.

I bought several books of this series for my family and they all enjoyed reading parts of it. The Libra (for me)was right on and it was very interesting to learn more about myself. I also enjoyed the section created for the couples. Whether you are a skeptic or into reading of horoscopes, this book was very informative and fun.

Amazon.com Review
Someday we will return to a place of unfathomable beauty, where we live amongst all the beings we have ever loved, promises George Anderson author of Walking in the Garden of Souls. "It is a place we will see again only after our lifetime of struggle, hardship and hurt has earned us the reward of true and final peace." Our task is not to simply muddle through, waiting for our ticket to Eden, cautions Anderson. Rather, we must set out to create "a Garden on earth while we are here," meaning we must cultivate the same life we yearn for in the hereafter. As he did with Lessons from the Light, Anderson conveys messages from the departed to help us tend our garden. The advice ranges from how to plant hope in times of despair to how to water the seeds of compassion (it may start with placing money in a panhandler's palm). Sometimes the garden metaphor seems forced or clichéd. But overall, this is a book with honorable intentions, helping us understand the purpose of life on Earth. --Gail Hudson

Enjoyable and Enlightening
By Michael E. Tymn
I nearly made the mistake of not buying this book. I had read George Anderson's "Lessons from the Light" as well as two of the books about him. I found them all interesting, informative, intriguing, and inspirational, but it had been my experience that second and third books by authors just usually rehash the material in the first book or two. I doubted that Anderson had much more to offer. I was very much wrong. This is the best of all books by or about Anderson. I hesitated in buying it, let it sit on a book shelf for some time, but then couldn't put it down once I started reading.
This book is more than some trite, mundane, and unremarkable utterances from the dead. Of course, the cynics who call themselves skeptics would scoff at even that, but I have learned enough about mediumship to know that it is for real. Yes, there are frauds, but Anderson is certainly not one of them. He comes across as a sincere, caring individual with a gift that he is using to help many people. From the many spirit communications that have come through him, Anderson has been able to piece together a concept of the "hereafter" and how souls continue in the realms. There is much wisdom, much profoundness in this book, all consistent with the preponderance of information obtained through other gifted mediums of the past 100 or more years.
Whenever I enjoy a book as much as I did this one, I buy a copy for my daughter, a pediatrics nurse who occasionally works with dying children. She has informed me that such books help her understand and deal with the losses. However, inasmuch as my daughter is now expecting a child, I questioned whether I should buy this book for her. Does a woman ready to give birth to new life want to read about death? The paradox here is that in coming to understand death, we come to understand the divine plan and better understand, appreciate, and enjoy life. If this understanding can be passed on to a child in his formative years, it would seem that the book is indeed appropriate at this time, and therefore I am buying a copy for her.

A most enlightening and healing book
By L. Miklowitz
This is not a collection of near-death experiences (NDE). While fascinating in their own right, those collections of accounts gathered by physicians Raymond Moody, Melvin Morse and Elisabeth Kubler Ross come from "tourists" who went and came back. Anderson purports to bring descriptions of the afterlife from permanent residents, the thousands of souls he has spoken with over the years. They are our loved ones if we've fortunate to make communicate with them. While many can do this themselves (see [...] others find it easier and faster to do it with two mediums. The problem is finding one who is accurate. Anderson's accuracy rate after testing by scientists of various disciplines is said to be 90 per cent. I have had readings with other mediums that were not as accurate, but a lot less expensive and brought me some plausible and helpful insights and information. Anderson charges $500 for 15-20 minutes with eight other people or couples or $1,200 for a private, one-hour reading.

I discovered George Anderson's two books and the four about him by radio-talk-show host Joel Martin when I needed them the most. I was wracked with grief. Anderson led me out of a very dark wood and helped me achieve a lot of spiritual growth. I certainly hope he's right that the soul survives the demise of the body and retains its personality, capacity to learn and grow and sense of humor. If he isn't, I'll know soon enough and come back to haunt him.

One of my favorites
By P. Strand
I am or have been of an agnostic inclination toward mediumship or communication with the dead. This book has has deeply touched my wife and I after the loss of our son. So many of his beliefs are in line with what I have always felt and thought throughout my life. I was raised Catholic and still am one. yet I belive that my beliefs can go along with and strengthen many of the thoughts expressed by Mr. Anderson. I didnt get the feeling he was tooting his own horn in this book. Even if you dont believe that anyong can talk to our deceased loved ones, and I myself am unsure, the book still should be read for its message of love and hope. I plan on getting more of his books. It should be in ones library of grief literature. Thank you Mr.Anderson for writing down so many of the ideas we have felt about spirituality, death, grief and knowing that there is a better life to come.

I LOVE MEN IN UNIFORM ... & ALL THE BETTER WHEN THEY'RE BRAVE LIKE MEADOWS'S HEROES ...
By Maxine Sloane
Ever since World War II when my father was a Marine, my uncle a Sailor, I've always admired men in uniform. How handsome they were to an impressionable young girl like me. But I've grown up since then, and don't read Captain Meadows's great military novels to envision those hunky military guys in uniform ... (but tell that to my daughter! Ha-ha!).

I read all of this author's books in the SIXTH FLEET series and am avidly devouring his JOINT TASK FORCE series. Although--from reading his books--Meadows's fans are bound to learn many things about the Navy and other branches of the military and about strategic planning during cold wars and hot ones, that is not my reason for being his number one fan.

Pure and simple, it's the excitement ... the edge-of-the seat, nail-biting scenes, and the spirit of adventure that pulls me into his stories. And WHAT stories he has to tell. Awesome!

I look forward to the upcoming (or did I miss the start of it?) TV series, starring that fine actor, Gene Hackman.

I'm a fan for life, so I hope Captain Meadows continues with this series and then writes another ... and another ... and another. I look forward to heading out to sea with him and his amazing crew of brave sailors.

AFRICA TOMORROW IN A SUPER-CHARGED TALE
By Bonnie Toews
It's fascinating to read a military adventure set in future Africa because most American authors rely on the Middle East or Asia for their terror/thriller plots. What's even more fascinating is David Meadows' insight into his African and Muslim characters. The ruthless forces of the African National Army could be the rebels in today's Congo or the radicals in Darfus. What Meadows so brilliantly brings to light is the psyche and experience that gives birth to their horrific disrespect for life and their desperate desire for power. In the tragedies and evil plaguing today, we all share a part in their evolution because of our apathy to the genocides occurring worldwide. What the author presents in this novel is the ultimate consequence to ignoring Africa's cry for help, and the Americans in particular will reap what they sow. Set against this historical backdrop of possibilities, Meadows portrays the heroism of those least known: reconnaissance crews. These are not sexy Seals or Navy fighter pilots that populate most military thrillers. His characters represent the backbone of your "ordinary," "average," even mundane, grunts of the corps, who in the performance of their duties make up the dedicated service that protects and defends everything the United States believes in and represents: a world free of tyranny. And in doing their duty risk their lives every day without hesitation. That's Meadow's mission in his goal to entertain the reader: to remind the world that ordinary people transform into extraordinary heroes under crisis. "Africa" also wraps up Meadows' series on the JOINT TASK FORCE.

In a new Naval-Marine TV series based on Meadows' novels, Gene Hackman fits the role of cigar-smoking Admiral Dick Holman, and placing the setting of these series in the future on the African continent would at last bring Americans to a greater understanding of this neglected and ignored connection to its own history of African-Americans. Just as JAG brings the issues of today's war on terrorism to the forefront as well as gives American forces a platform to air their experiences and concerns, Meadows' vision can educate as well as entertain what may face America in ten short years from now. It's reality in a fictional format and ideal for TV audiences.

(...) This is Class-A writing at its nerve-wracking best. You've written another hit, Capt. Meadows. What are you going to do for an encore? I'm really looking forward to your next series.

Pretentious and Monotonous. Hard to Get Through.
By R. Cheney
Reading this book was like wading through quicksand.

It reminded me a lot of the movie Tears in the Sun, with Bruce Willis as the commander of a U.S. navy special missions platoon in Africa, and it seemed to borrow a lot from the movie. In fact it seemed like the author was trying to imitate many of the characters and situations in the movie throughout this at times very idiotically written book that wasn't even a tenth as good as the movie it obviously tried to mimic.

Many of the scenes, for example, seemed lifted directly from the movie. This normally doesn't bother me, because a lot of writers seem to take this shortcut, but this book really didn't add anything new or different, and all in all it was pretty tedious going at times just to get from one chapter to the next. Very humdrum and disappointing. The book just dragged on and on.

Read the latest by Gandt (a really gifted military author) or De Felice, you'll do much better. Or just watch the Willis movie if you want a solid story and riveting action. Got to be honest in giving Joint Task Force Africa a big thumbs down.

The Begotten (The Gifted Series, Book 1), by Lisa Tawn Bergren

An ancient prophecy threatens the foundation of the church...and those who dare to die for what they believe.

The year is 1339, the height of the Inquisition. A secret half a millennium old is on the brink of being exposed. Centuries before, the Church compiled the letters written by St. Paul with other texts to form the foundation of the Christian canon. But what the world doesn't know is that Paul wrote another letter-a letter speaking of men and women who, though begotten of men, possess mysterious spiritual gifts. Now, the time has come for the Gifted to gather. The beautiful healer; the wise priest; the slave with the gift of prophecy; the knight with faith enough to leave the Church-as their talents grow more powerful, so do those who wish to destroy them. Now, they must race against time to find the rest of the Gifted ones, and to decipher the prophecy that foretold of their coming. For only by combining their powers will they vanquish those determined to destroy them, and uncover the secret of the letter that will determine the fate of the Church...and the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Bergren's experience as a Christian historical fiction author (God Gave Us You) serves her well in this religious thriller, the first of a trilogy set in 14th-century Italy. Fragments of a mysterious long-lost letter written by Saint Paul are surfacing that speak of a group known as the Gifted, who will gather to fight the powers of encroaching darkness. With the Inquisition in full swing, Satan has sent his minion, the Sorcerer, to take over the world. Father Piero, a Dominican priest, has found the first of the Gifted, Lady Daria D'Angelo, who can bring the dead back to life. Daria uses her gift on the dying knight Gianni de Capezzana, who swears fealty to Daria and joins her in Siena, where the group gains strength and numbers. Soon, the Gifted and the forces of the underworld are locked in mortal combat. CBA readers will find much to cheer, but others will also enjoy this classic battle between good and evil. Disregard Da Vinci Code comparisons and think Lord of the Rings, but without Hobbits and the allegorical trappings. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Bergren's thriller is set in Italy during the paranoid days of the Inquisition, when Christianity teeters on the edge of oblivion. A long-lost letter from St. Paul surfaces, predicting the rise of a group called the Gifted. Father Piero, a Dominican priest, finds the first of these, a proto-feminist with healing powers, Lady Daria D'Angelo. A knight whom she heals, Gianni de Capezzan, and a mute ex-slave, Hasani, round out the core members, who rapidly gain followers even as they flee the Sorcerer, the fearsome, magical emissary of Satan. Suspenseful and exquisitely detailed, Bergren's first entry in a trilogy will not only thrill evangelical readers but also engage anyone loving adventure and an unnerving battle between good and evil. Tom Clancy Meets Catherine Marshall with a dash of Michael Crichton Thrown In!
By Michael A. Heald
The Begotten by best-selling author Lisa T. Bergren is the first book of the Gifted series. Book two, The Betrayed, was published in late 2007, and book three, The Blessed, is scheduled for release on 2008.

This book represents a growing subgenre of Christian speculative fiction - the religious thriller. Christian romance and historical fiction are established subgenres. However, "religious thriller" sounds like an oxymoron. The Publisher's Weekly review left me scratching my head in confusion. "CBA readers will find much to cheer, but others will also enjoy this classic battle between good and evil. Disregard Da Vinci Code comparisons and think Lord of the Rings, but without Hobbits and the allegorical trappings."

CBA encourages the publication of upliftingly enjoyable novels such as Christy by Catherine Marshall. Stretching the CBA's boundaries beyond The Chronicles of Narnia seems difficult. I often wonder if The Lord of the Rings had been published now whether it would have been embraced by CBA given the backlash against the Harry Potter books and their ilk. Besides, what is the LOTR without Hobbits and the allegorical trappings?

The story is set in 14th century Sienna, a city-state that will become part of the modern nation of Italy. A prophetic book, purportedly written by the Apostle Paul, describes the coming battle between good and evil, "not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." - Ephesians 6:12.

The powers of darkness work through men moved by greed, lust, sorceries, and death. The Gifted work through powers bestowed by God--wisdom, healing, faith, visions, discernment, miracles, and prophecy.

Before others of the Gifted can gather, the power of darkness strikes like a hammer to destroy them. Can mere men and women stand against such power?

Ms Bergren recreates the world of 14th century Sienna with a deft touch, bringing alive a culture that is completely foreign to our own.

With trembling hands, the old woman set down the box upon the table
and opened the lid. Spectacles! Gianni had only seen two pair of the
new contraptions--once in Venezia, the second in Roma. They were
frightfully expensive, an extravagance of the wealthy. And the lady
bestowed them upon a servant?

Though I would not claim an extensive knowledge of church or renaissance European history, Ms. Bergren fills her story with historical references with just the right amount of explanation that give her story breadth and scope, such as the removal of the papacy to Avignon in France.

The pace and tension of the story rise page by page, impelling the reader forward chapter by chapter to the rich, satisfying conclusion. Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton could do no better.

Ms. Bergren's storytelling demonstrates the blossoming of a genre that will appeal to people of diverse faith cultures--the religious thriller. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the Gifted series.

An Extraordinary Must Read for the Spiritually Awakened
By Kindle Customer
I stumbled on this book by chance when looking for something to read that was entertaining, what I found was a book that affirmed my faith in the true teachings of Jesus Christ. In recent past the literary community has sensationalized books about religious mysteries such as the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, garnering thousands of readers and sparking yet another round of debate about the conspiracy of the "church" and religion versus spirituality. In The Begotten we are introduced to a mystery that is not only plausible but historically and biblically accurate. Lisa T. Bergen has created characters that ordinary people can readily identify with in personality and character. The battle waged between good and evil and how these characters exercise their free will is told in such a way that the readers can look pass theological teachings of the church and see how ordinary individuals develop spiritually.

If you are merely seeking a thrilling read, congratulations you have it, however if you're open to the realm of God's greatest promises you'll be blessed with a richness that far exceeds a good read.

The Begotten is book one of a trilogy I read all three books in one week and pray that the series is made into a movie.

Middle Ages Version of X-Men
By Deborah
A lot of times we like to play the what if question. This can lead to long drawn out debates on what could have happen if something had taken place. Sometimes we worry that things would have been radically different if things had changed. Other times times we speculate on the possibilities that could have taken place if only such and such had taken place. That is the premise of The Begotten. Paul had written many letters to churches. What if there had been another letter sent to a special group of people called The Gifted?

Set during the time of the Inquisition, the secret of Paul's extra letter is trying to be kept hidden by the holy leaders. They are against females holding high authority and wish to keep any knowledge about it in secret. Years later however, individuals with secret powers find each other as they strive to help out those in need. They are Christians, strong in their faith, battling those who have turned to the dark side.

This book was a wonderful engrossing read. I love books about medieval times with knights and lords and ladies. The whole story was fascinating when you imagine a group such as the Gifted existing in today's world or even the world back then. Daria was a very strong female character especially for that time period. She was highly respected by the people around her. The men are eager to protect her yet they do not see her as just a weak female or try to woo her. They are quick to defend her and risk their lives for not only her but anyone in their company. I felt this book in a genre like The Da Vinci Code, although far superior. Myth and legend are always interesting especially when you can incorporate scriptural truth with it. In my opinion, I felt the characters were like a middle ages version of X-Men or Heroes. Group of people with special powers that feel unwanted by the rest of the world.

I highly recommend this book for those who are fans of this genre, and for anyone who enjoys a really good story. If you have a good imagination, this book definitely makes good use of it.

Awesome Stories
By Judy
Men At Work anthology sizzles from the first page.

Slow Hands by Janelle Denison is a titillating story about Tess Monroe and Morgan Kane. Tess is back in town after being away since high school. She had left Morgan behind with his heart broken. Now Tess has come back and has hired Morgan to repair her grandmother's house. The sparks between these two really fly. WOW. Slow hands is another keeper by Janelle Denison.

Nina Bangs brings a taste of the supernatural in Color Me Wicked. Amanda Harcourt has come back to help redecorate The Castle of Dark Dreams. She has to work with painter and former lover Conleth Maguire. With a nosey physic cat, plants that thrive when lovemaking is near, this is a fun filled, lusty story. Amanda and Con really do liven up this castle.

The Fixer-Upper by MaryJanice Davidson is another witty, sexy read. Cathy Wyth is exciting to be a new homeowner. Cathy feels another presence in her home but its seems to be a friendly spirit. Upon moving in she meets her neanderthal neighbor Ken Allen. Ken takes over helping Cathy move in and get the shock of his life. Little does Cathy know but her friendly ghost now lives in Ken's hot body. MaryJanice Davidson delivers a funny, lively, hot story.

Entertaining, But Not What It Is Advertised To Be. Read The Review And Decide For Yourselves.
By Janalee Ruschhaupt
There is nothing like a man stripped down to only a pair of well-worn jeans and his leather boots, with muscles bulging from hard work to bring on thoughts of: hot...sweaty...rough...sex! Welcome to the world of Men At Work!

Tess Monroe is coming home after being away for eight years. She is only staying long enough to get her grandmother's house in shape and ready to sell. There is one person that she will seek out is her old love, Morgan Kane. Tess needs his help with all the numerous repairs. Boy, he looks even better now than he did eight years ago!

Slow Hands is by author Janelle Denison. This is an outstanding erotic tale of past lovers finding their passionate flame had not gone out. From the moment this story starts until the very end, the characters are like a well-worn pair of shoes, they are comfortable and convincing. Ms. Denison, this is a heartwarming and superbly written erotic story, and people should buy the book just for this tale of love!

Sparkle Stardust, a cosmic troublemaker, is about to start some sexual trouble for old high school lovers, Amanda Harcourt and Conleth Maguire. Sparkle will pair them together to redo her newly acquired, Castle of Dark Dreams (like an adult fun park). Conleth and Amanda will have to work together to get the job done - coloring this castle with their own sexual vibes!

Color Me Wicked is by author Nina Bangs. Ms. Bangs' writing style is out in leftfield and distinctly different, which this reader loves. No one writes quite like her. Between the out-there imagination and outrageous erotic wording, Ms. Bangs has backbone, and it has not left the building. If you are looking for an unusual story, look toward Nina Bangs to deliver it!

Catherine Wyth is now a proud homeowner of a fixer-upper project. What she did not know before she bought this house is it has a ghost named Jack, and her next-door neighbor, Ken, is foul-mouthed and tacky. If only that hunk Ken was not so obnoxious and crude. One never knows how a shot of electricity can change a man's entire outlook on life, can one?

The Fixer-Upper is by author MaryJanice Davidson. Okay, this story might not be as erotic as the other two, but this jaded reader has not laughed so hard as she did with this tale of haunted love and a love-hate relationship between best friends; it kicked this story up to hilarious. You just have to read this tale to appreciate Ms. Davidson's absolutely kick-butt - delivered on dry toast - sense of humor.

Though this book is an overall entertaining read, it is not what the front cover or blurb on the back of this contemporary anthology suggested. Slow Hands by Janelle Denison was the only story that fit into the anthology's pretext of rugged and sexy, blue-collar men that work with their hands. The other two remaining stories are paranormal type tales of otherworldly beings and did not fit into the contemporary category. Now that you know the true contents of this book, you can make an informative decision whether to buy it or not.

wonderful contemporary novellas
By A Customer
Denison. Though in love as high school sweethearts, Tess Monroe, encouraged by her grandmother, left Morgan Kane behind in Wynhaven to go off to school and be somebody. Eight years later, she is back to sell her deceased grandmother's house that needs restoring; Morgan's company is doing the work. Both realize the spark remains fiery between them, but Tess plans to leave once her work is finished.

Bangs. Cosmic troublemaker extraordinaire Sparkle Stardust mentors klutzy Deimos on how interfering in human relationships is the most fun in the universe. Her targets are former lovers Amanda Harcourt and Conleith Maguire. Interior designer Amanda is back in Galveston restoring the Castle of Dark Dreams having left town and Conleith for New York ten years ago. Conleith's firm has the painting contract on the restoration project. Both realize the spark remains hot between them, but Amanda plans to depart once her work is finished.

Davidson. Temporary worker Cathy Wyth buys a late nineteenth century fixer-upper before realizing what a foul mouthed obnoxious neighbor Ken Allen is or that she has a kind hearted resident ghost in Jack. As Cathy and Jack begin to fall in an impossible love, Ken turns even more nasty and boorish if that is possible.

The male blue collar restoration themes connect these wonderful contemporary novellas that cross sub-genres from second chance to paranormal with twists. The lead couples are wonderful pairings including the ghostly hunk and the support cast solid as each author provides a superior entertaining contribution.
