 Susan Jennings was sprawled on the floor, her half-emptied wine glass on the vanity.

 Nikki lightly tapped Susan’s face. Something was wrong. Susan wasn’t moving at all. Nikki watched for her chest to rise and fall. No movement. Then she bent over to hear her breathing. Nothing. Finally, she took the bride’s pulse, her own pulse quickening and adrenaline pumping through her.
Nikki dropped Susan’s limp hand as a scream caught in the back of her throat. Susan Jennings Waltman wouldn’t be making a formal entrance to her wedding reception or any type of entrance ever again.

Entertaining. Might be worth it for the recipes and wine pairings.

In this second book in the series, Nikki Sands has settled into her new job at the winery in Napa Valley. She's made a few close friends, and is beginning to explore romantic entanglement with two men. One is her boss, and the other is the brother of Isabel, a good friend. Life's pretty good. But then...

Isabel, who owns a new restaurant, agrees to cater a wedding, then she discovers that the bride is marrying Isabel's (sort of secret) lover. Understandably, Isabel is upset, expecially when it turns out that the bride, Susan, is a mean and nasty person. After Susan is murdered at the wedding, the police decide that Isabel is to blame -- and Nikki, of course, has to find the real culprit. The only problem is that Susan was mean and nasty to LOTS of people; the question is, which one of them had reason enough to kill her?

The book is entertaining, if not breathtakingly "force this book on all my friends" so. Nikki has believeable reasons for making her decisions, the victim deserved her ill fate (you know that from the first chapter), and the author does keep you guessing about the identity of the murderer. A few too many things happen conveniently for the plot's sake, but they're all forgiveable in a cozy little story like this.

The story stands well on its own; you don't need to have read the previous book in the series (though you might learn a little more about Derek by doing so; he's away on business for a large chunk of this story). You can certainly put your feet up, pull the box of chocolate chip cookies closer to you, and spend an enjoyable afternoon falling into this tale.

One thing that Michele Scot does particularly well is weave the wine and food into the story. After a chapter in which the characters had an important conversation while eating dinner, for example, the book has a mini-chapter with the recipe specifics. I'm not sure what people will think of me when I pull out a mystery book from which to cook "pork tenderloin with port wine mushroom sauce, with Alexander Valley Vineyards Sin Zin," but the recipe is appealing enough that I plan to do just that.

Not a WOW but definitely entertaining... particularly if you're a foodie.

A delicious, intoxicating read

I loved Murder Uncorked, so couldn't wait to pick up Murder by the Glass... and now that I've finished it, I'm thirsty for the third.

If you're looking for an escape to the wine country... spiced with a touch of murder, plenty of romance (with two dishy, to-die-for men), and lots of great wine and food, look no further. Scott pulls you in on the first page and doesn't let go till you're done. Her characters are great -- I love the Bridezilla in particular, as well as the two men who are vying for the leading role in Nikki's life -- and the plot is a puzzler that will keep you guessing to the end.

Murder By the Glass is a perfect read for a summer afternoon -- with a glass or two of wine and some munchies, of course. Be warned, though -- the ending will leave you anxiously awaiting the release of the next installment. Fortunately, you can pass the time trying out the fabulous recipes (and wine-pairings) sprinkled throughout the book. That's what I plan to do!

"He's a prim, dim, sexless nothing" - yeah, okay, but he's another fantastic Francis hero

Flying Finish is a Dick Francis thriller from 1966, one of his earliest works, so this one's got some mileage on it. It's still a really good read. This time, Francis throws a swerve in that his hero isn't this unassuming, unobstrusive gent nursing some buried sorrow but rather this wild and brash exhibitionis-- ah, who am I kidding? Unless it's Sid Halley, with his one hand and the other, a prosthetic... unless it's the colorful Daniel Roke (For Kicks, 1965)... well, one of my all-time favorite crime writers tends to stick to formula.

So, no swerve thrown in Flying Finish. It's about unassuming, unobstrusive gent Henry Grey who for most of his life has lived up to his surname, never mind that he's a viscount. All his life, Henry had remained closed off, had held the world at bay, had quietly, oh-so-politely spurned his mother's attempts at landing him a suitable marriage. And things most likely would've gone on like so if not for the impetus of his sister's scornful words one day. She thinks his is a bad disposition. She rips into him: "I cannot stand much more of your damned autistic behavior. You're a spoiled, bad-tempered bastard...."

Sister's words hit home enough that here's fastidious, methodical Henry reassessing. I mean, an office worker was heard to say about Henry: "He's a prim, dim, sexless nothing." But, now, here's Henry, after six years of nose to grindstone, suddenly swapping his cushy desk job at a posh bloodstock agency at Hanover Square for the more hands-on gig of traveling head groom for an equine air transport business. It's a drastic change of scenery. His new boss doubts he'd last long. He doesn't know Henry and Henry's vast reserves of sheer bloody-mindedness.

Lord Henry Grey is cut from that familiar Francis hero mold, yeah. What that means is that Henry harbors a sneaky adventurous streak. Henry is a part-time amateur jockey; as well, he's an amateur pilot. Flying Finish is a kind of precursor to Rat Race (1970) in that the heroes of both novels are aviators. There's a neat behind-the-scenes story to Flying Finish. In researching for the novel, Francis' wife, Mary, learned to fly a plane expertly. She was such a natural that she parlayed her knack into writing a flying manual, Flying Start: A Guide to Flying Light Aircraft, and starting an air-taxi service (which would become the backdrop to Rat Race).

Call me softie or sucker, but some of my favorite Francis thrillers are when he injects an interesting love story. It's one of the reasons I love Nerve (1964) so much. In Flying Finish, he dabbles in sweeping romance. Who woulda thunk it that this self-contained aristocrat would fall prey to insta-love, to love at first sight? It's what happens once he sets eyes on Gabriella, the gorgeous Italian girl who toils at the gift counter at the airport in Milan. He don't speak no Italian. She don't speak much English. Still, she reciprocates his adoration. He daren't tell her he's the son of an earl. You can figure out why. But I smiled - and smirked - throughout their courtship because it was fun to see our buttoned-up guy loosen up and be this impulsive.

As ever, Francis deftly writes about the disparity of the British classes, the stuffy peerage and the lunch pail muck-a-mucks as funneled thru Henry's daily life, or, rather, double lives. And since this is a thriller, that element eventually surfaces, but not before Francis spends chunks of pages doing character work. I almost forgot it was a thriller. But, then, uh-oh, Henry observes that personnel have been mysteriously disappearing during these horse-transit flights and that there may be more than just horse flesh kept in the cargo hold. One innocent question leads to another, and, just like that, Henry is in over his head caught up in Nefarious Activities. The third act is typical Francis hurly burly, scenes rife with menace and shocking brutality. See, Francis, he's a writer who excels in crafting these modern-day horsey fables in which the hero is more capable than us yet he's believable enough and relatable enough that we're tricked into thinking we, too, can save the day and thwart the baddies like he does. Yeah, Dick Francis, he's been tricking me all these years.

Sky High Stakes

Dick Frances never writes the same story twice though he does use a winner take all formula. Henry Grey is the heir to an Earldom and to escape a deadly path ordained by his existence he takes a job flying an airplane that transports horses.
The planes are as elderly as his father and poorly maintained, but when he discovers the true nature of his flights he fights back with all the fearlessness of honor betrayed.
His efforts are hampered by a sadistic goon who uses cruelty to hid his hatred of the different.
The main story takes place high in the sky with "George" flying the plane as Henry fights for his life, the Italian girl he has learned to love and the horses in his care.
A good read from an author who has given us many mysteries of unfailing suspense.

Looking for love and family but discovering sometimes they find you. A fantastic read!!!!

Shower of Stars by Nancy Herkness is a story of a different vein than the other enchanting novels by her that have come across my desk to read and review. Nancy is known for her enchanting romances that sweep you off your feet. She can leave you short of breath, for many reasons, and still have an underlying story-within-the-story that packs a punch and makes it more than another Saturday afternoon fairytale.
But this, Shower of Stars was different from the start. This was the first of Nancy’s books that I would move from the “Romance” genre to the “Women’s Fiction” genre, for though there was romance folded within the pages and she worked her magic at raising the blood pressure and libido within the context of the story - that was not her focus. The focus of this little gem was about one’s longing for love and family and the journey to find family only to discover love in the process.
With each new book, I am finding that Nancy is learning to give more voice to her characters within her stories. With this she is allowing them to tell their stories and share their souls. In turn this is providing a magic of depth and feeling to her books that only the best authors are able to attain. Suddenly, we are no longer just reading Nancy’s stories, we are living them through her characters; feeling, breathing and sensing life from their point of view. That is true magic. That is what lifts the story off the page and gives it life.
I feel that Shower of Stars is a glimpse of some of the wonder that Nancy will be bringing to her readership in the coming months and years. I am looking forward to falling into the worlds she builds and melting into the stories she creates. This wonderful work receives a FIVE STAR Review from this humble reviewer and blogger.

A wonderfully romantic, beautifully written tale!

A Shower of Stars is a beautifully written, intricate love story about a journalist, Charlotte "Charlie" Bergland, who is trying to get an interview with a meteorite hunter, Jack Lanett. Their first meeting involves rescuing a hundred-pound dog from a hit-and-run, and continues from there. Charlie is recovering from a painful divorce and is in the process of adopting a baby from China. Jack is a very private person who will reveal nothing about his past and is reluctant to grant interviews, but his enchantment with her long, blonde hair allows her this chance for an exclusive article.

When Charlie's caseworker suggests she find work closer to home she decides to write a book about Jack. Like the book, didn't think it was complicated at all but I was an English major back in the day! Just gives reminders about saying the babies name with the last name in two different ways; by the rhythm of the names and the sounds. Book suggests similar sound in the first name make it more memorable or flow better. Consonants are simple, vowels you just need to be able to determine whether an E name is a short E or. Long E. A short E is like the sound that the name Emma starts with, and long E is the sound that the name Kaylee ends with.

The Best Book for Naming Your Baby!

I have several baby name books and found myself frustrated at trying to come up with a short list of names I liked. This book helps you to understand how to match the first, middle, and last names. I almost did not buy this book because at first glance it looked confusing, but something made me take a second look at it and I am glad I did. Whether you prefer a common or unique name, this book will help you choose a name that will flow. Once you spend a few minutes reading the beginning of the book, you will understand the method. The authors have made it simple by breaking everything down into quick and easy to use lists. This book helped me to realize why I did not like any of the names that I was coming up with. I now know it was because I was choosing names that did not go with our surname. Now I am looking at names in an entirely different way!

I really love the concept behind this book -- naming your baby based on the sound of the name, first matched with last, instead of what the name means or its origin. I guess being a writer, I'm drawn to the lyricism of language, so this was, seriously, The Perfect Baby Name book for me. I used its priciples in rhythm and sound to name my daughter and will use it again for my next one! I highly recommend this reading -- the name suggestions really offered such surprising and wonderful considerations that I never would have come up on my own.

Bill McWilliams, a 1955 graduate of West Point and an Air Force officer, flew 128 combat missions in Vietnam. A gentleman in my community passed away recently. His obit stated that he was in the Battle of Pork Chop Hill, and was one of 4 survivors from his platoon. I decided to find a book to describe the battle, and learned it was actually a couple of battles. The history and politics were interesting and I did learn a bit about the era. I recommend it to anyone who wants to research this battle.

I Was There

As I was the first platoon leader of I Company 32 Infantry who was wounded in this engagement I can attest to the author's excellent and honest recreation of the events of those terrible days in July of 1953. It really is difficult to understand the carnage that occurred on that insignificant little outpost in front of the MLR if one had not been there. But, the author not only did a fine job in explaining the political situation(Pork Chop had no strategic value- so why expend so many lives?), and the tactical situation as it evolved day by day, but he managed to tell what it was like for the individual infantryman to fight and try to survive under merciless shelling and masses of enemy soldiers whose leaders cared little about the cost to these men in their wave assaults.
As a side bar- the second battle of Pork Chop Hill was the most intense artillery action in the history of modern warfare. Never in such a limited area were so many shells fired from as far back as the big guns at the Corps level down to the battalion mortars.

Superbly written account of the last battle for Pork Chop Hill in the Korea War. It's not just a report of strategy and tactics; more importantly, it's an intimate look at the men who fought, were wounded and died there. I served in the the Pork Chop Hill sector at the time of the battle and can vouch for the authenticity of what Bill McWilliams has so carefully and respectfully prepared for the public's understanding of the realities, the horrors, the heroics and complexities of the Korean War.

David Meadows was good in his first series, but he's gone from a scribbler of books to a WRITER OF NOVELS with this book. He has vaulted into the top tier of military fiction authors with this book. His ear for dialogue is unsurpassed. Having spent a few hours around flag officers and more time than I wish to admit on skimmers, Meadows has the flavor nailed down. I could taste the stack gas and hear the roar of the turbines on the flight deck.
His understanding of the bond between warriors is keen and the characters are well developed. The action flows fast and the [non-essential] is an absolute minimum. Best of all, no gratitutious sex scenes (see his web site for the reason for that.) that would be an embarrasment to the USN. ...
I can't wait for January and the next installment. It's a joy to have a new author I hunger for when I go to the store.

Above the Pack

Captain David E. Meadows rises to the top of the military thriller with Joint Task Force: Liberia. His growing mastery of suspense and characterization captures the reader with his opening sentence: "Ullma pulled the children closer." From here, he delves into the terror of ordinary citizens and children suddenly pitched into the lap of rebel extremists without a lifeline in Liberia. He not only paints the resulting American military rescue scenes with realism and true-to-life dialogue, he presents an interesting political scenario that nails the hidden agenda of a so-called ally: France. This is an author who knows the insides-out of his subject and gives us a fly-on-the-wall view of real possibilities in a world that now rocks with anti-Americanism. For this reason he stands apart from Tom Clancy and is building his own throne in military fiction. Kudos for the first of his Joint Task Force series. Can't wait to read the rest.

A Well Thought Out Page-Turner

David Meadows is a fine emerging author of action-military stories with interesting twists. His books are useful to stretch your mind and connect events and ideas that you would not automatically have put in the same category.

In this volume from his Joint Task Force series, a group of Americans have spent the last few years building a settlement in Liberia and are trying to retire to a community that would help their ancestral land while allowing them to enjoy life when a group of Islamic fanatics begin taking over Liberia and killing all the Americans. Among the retired Americans is an African American General with strong combat experience and his top sergeant.
Meanwhile, off the American coast, a Navy-Marine Joint Task Force is experimenting with a new generation of experimental unmanned fighter aircraft (think predators but much more agile) when it is assigned the immediate challenge of rescuing the Americans in Liberia before the marauding Islamists massacre them. Additionally, the French have decided to intervene with a stronger Naval force and since no American aircraft carrier is in the area, think they will have the dominant force necessary to humiliate the Americans.

The interspersing of Americans trying to survive in Liberia, fighter experimentation at the cutting edge, a tense standoff with an 'ally' and the Navy-Marine determination to save their fellow citizens makes for a consistently interesting read.

Simply stated, Meadows will have you turning pages and thinking new thoughts.

A book you won't want to put down!

I love a good mystery and this one, and the first book in the series, Love is Murder, are wonderful reads. The central character in this story is Morgan Tyler, the head writer for a soap opera. She has a very interesting background as a wildlife photographer whose husband dies and to try to find a place for herself, sends in a story to a contest to become a soap opera writer. She wins the contest and is very successful in her professional life. Her personal life kicks into high gear after being a widow for several years.

The story line is fresh, the characters are normal and very likeable. I found both of these books hard to put down. The plot twists are original, which is very refreshing these days.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series and I highly recommend this for anyone who like a good mystery.

This second in the series is just as good as the first...

So many times you approach a new book written by a favorite author with anticipation that it will be wonderful, and then you're disappointed. That didn't happen with this book -- I'd say it was just as good as the first, and maybe better.

Once again, the reader is taken into the world of upscale New York and television production -- daytime drama (what the rest of the world calls soap operas, but not the people who produce them, apparently!) Our detective character Morgan Tyler writes and co-produces a hit daytime drama. The story begins when one of the stars of the program tells her that she has an estranged husband out there who will kill her if he locates her. Morgan asks her sort-of boyfriend who is a homicide detective to see what he can find out about the husband, who may or may not be using that name -- and it's unclear what his real name is, although he is a very wealthy man. In the meantime, Morgan must deal with the trials of daytime drama production, including a new boss who wants to fire one of the actors who has put on too much weight. Then there's trying to plan the series during the time that the ratings are established -- a time when everyone pulls out all the stops to attract viewers. It becomes apparent that someone doesn't like Morgan and is either trying to scare her off something (but what?) or kill her.

This book is fast-paced, entertaining, filled with distinctive characters (you can just imagine them in your mind), and well plotted. I was genuinely surprised by the ending, although it all made sense. The world of daytime drama -- or television production in general -- is so interesting that I wonder why no-one else has used it as the location for a mystery series. I look forward to reading more in the series.

This series is addictive.

Remember the slogan for a certain brand of potato chips: "Bet you can't eat just one!"? This second entry in a series of mysteries set against the backdrop of daytime television makes me say, "Bet you can't read just one!" Exalted writer Charles Dickens and his publisher knew the value of leaving the reader begging for more. Today's reader is fortunate to now have access to the writing skills of Linda Palmer, who has followed up LOVE IS MURDER with another winner, LOVE HER TO DEATH. Like the first book, I was faced with a delicious quandry. I couldn't put it down, but I didn't want it to end, either. Linda's writing style easily draws the readers into her main character's world. In that world we're allowed to live for a few too-brief hours while we mix and mingle with other fascinating people and imagine ourselves caught up not only in the current mystery but life behind the scenes on a popular television show. The brilliance behind combining the two is evident. How more intriguing could it be than to write a serial ABOUT a serial? That makes the story possibilities endless, which I hope is what this series will be. My craving to find out "what happens next" to Morgan Tyler, her friends, and her enemies makes me wish for a new entry once a month, once a week, once a day...okay, not realistic, I know. Sigh. Pass the bag of chips...I'll re-read the first two until the next one arrives in the mail.

At the start of Fowler's topnotch 12th cozy to feature the quilter and amateur sleuth (after 2004's Broken Dishes), Benni stumbles on the body of church handyman Walt Adams, who's oozing blood onto the sanctuary's new carpeting. Who would hurt a sweet old caretaker? On the other hand, what did anyone really know about Walt's past? Both the policemen in Benni's life—her Latino hunk hubby, Gabe Ortiz, and Ford "Hud" Hudson, who'd love to be more than her friend—warn her to leave the detective work to the professionals, but as usual, Benni leaps first and thinks later. Between Walt's murder and the disappearance of a valuable violin from the San Celina, Calif., folk museum, Gabe and Benni have their hands full. The surprise visit of Gabe's long-estranged cousin, Luis, adds to their difficulties, as he and Gabe seek to work through their differences, and Benni seeks to referee. Gabe's reluctance to open up to Benni propels the three-year Ortiz-Harper union into some rough waters. A heart-hammering hostage situation leads to a highly unexpected ending, while most readers will approve of the almost-but-not-quite-resolved Benni-Hud relationship. <

In San Celina, California, Benni Harper is curator of the local folk art museum, and her husband, Gabe Ortiz, is chief of police. There's a huge tangle of friends, relations, and family members attached to the couple: in this tale, the focus is on Gabe's cousin, Luis, who is close as a brother, and Benni's grandma, Dove, who raised her and who has roped her into helping with the children's Christmas pageant at the Baptist Church. Then Benni finds the church's reclusive handyman murdered in the sanctuary; meanwhile, an antique violin goes missing from Benni's museum. The solving of one crime becomes intertwined with that of the other, as Fowler mixes the mystery plot with some fairly didactic tableaux about the value of faith, the complexities of memory and marital fidelity, immigration procedure and practice, and how the police manage hostage situations. A series that had been progressing nicely seems stalled a bit here, bur fans' interest in Benni may get them through the clunky exposition. GraceAnne DeCandido

All our favorite characters are back and it's like reuniting with some old friends. You can read a synopsis of the book above but there is more behind the story itself. The relationships between various characters grow and change and will leave readers looking to see what the future holds for each character. I have loved each book in this series and look forward to more!

great mysteries with heart

Earlene Fowler writes wonderful character based stories. The mystery story line is strong, but the true strength comes from the realistic human interaction populating her books. It is so refreshing to find characters who love family members while they struggle to live with them!
